Aims. To synthesize the evidence on nurses' experiences of their caring role during the COVID‐19 pandemic and identify emerging concepts that have affected nurses within the caring role in relation to (a) their professional lives and (b) their personal lives. Background. The concept of caring is central to the science and art of nursing practice, and fulfilment of the caring role is fundamental to the profession. The COVID‐19 pandemic imposed unprecedented change globally transforming the caring role of the nurse. The WHO highlights that a well‐supported workforce is paramount to emergency preparedness; therefore, understanding the experiences of the nurse's caring role during the COVID‐19 crisis is paramount to practice in future healthcare crises. Methods. A scoping review. Data Sources. Studies published between January 2020 and November 2023 were identified from the following databases: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Coronavirus Database, PUBMED, PsycINFO, PsycArticles, Scopus, Web of Science, and SocINDEX. Reporting Method. The scoping review adhered to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis Extension for Scoping Review (PRISMA‐ScR) checklist. Results. The search identified 1,347 studies, subsequent review of title and abstract, resulted in 117 full‐text papers for further eligibility screening, with a total of 52 studies being included in the scoping review. Findings were grouped thematically using the Braun and Clarke (2006) approach. The five distinctive themes that emerged were (a) emotional turmoil, (b) erosion of care, (c) relationships and solidarity, (d) expansion of role, and (e) professional growth. Conclusion. During the COVID‐19 pandemic, there was an evolutionary shift in the caring role of the nurse, on a trajectory from emotional turmoil to professional growth. The process followed a theoretical framework of transformative learning that could support nurses' capability and preparedness in their caring role for future inevitable extreme events and crisis in healthcare. Mapping current knowledge of the unprecedented COVID‐19 crisis from a nurse's professional and personal perspective purposefully aims to highlight gaps for future research, education, and policy and is paramount to emergency preparedness and a well‐supported workforce in future healthcare crisis. Introduction. Ethiopia has made significant efforts to enhance family planning services despite variations in the community's use of modern contraception in different parts of the country. Various studies have reported the proportion and determinant factors of adolescents' contraceptive uptake in Ethiopia. These studies are not consistent in terms of size, scope, and geographic coverage, and the results need to be systematically collated to inform policies. Therefore, this review was aimed at analyzing the findings of those primary studies to obtain more representative evidence of adolescents' contraceptive uptake in Ethiopia. Methods. Five databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL) were searched for papers published from January 2000 up to June 2022 in English. Of thirty eligible studies, eight papers were included in this meta-analysis. Between-study heterogeneity was evaluated by the forest plot and inconsistency index ( I 2 ). A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled estimates of adolescents' contraceptive uptake. Results. The overall pooled proportion of adolescents' contraceptive uptake was 40% ( I 2 = 99.70 , p ≤ 0.001 ; 95 % CI = 19 , 61). Adolescents' usage of contraception was influenced by a number of factors: individual-, sociocultural-, knowledge- (about contraceptive methods), and healthcare service-related factors. Individual-related factors include the educational status of adolescents, being of young age, and the income status of adolescents' families. Sociocultural-related factors comprise discussion with the family/relatives, parent disapproval and pressure from partners, and being married or having a partner. Healthcare service-related factors include the availability of youth clubs and inconvenient service hours for SRH services. Knowing contraceptive methods and SRH services was also positively associated with adolescents' contraceptive utilization. Conclusions. The proportion of adolescents who used contraception in Ethiopia was 40%. Adolescents' use of contraceptives was influenced by a variety of factors: individual-, sociocultural-, healthcare-, and knowledge-related factors. Hence, integrated interventions targeted at tackling barriers to contraceptive uptake may be helpful to improve adolescents' contraceptive utilization in Ethiopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: With rapid changes in treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC), qualitative research into CRC survivorship requires greater synthesis. This paper aims to fill this gap through a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42019131576) and thematic synthesis of the qualitative literature on survivorship experiences across early‐stage and advanced CRC survivors. Methods: CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and PubMed were searched for qualitative CRC survivorship papers. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened. Included articles (n = 81) underwent data extraction, CASP qualitative bias ratings and thematic synthesis. Results: Bowel dysfunction caused functional limitations and negative quality of life (QoL), while stomas posed threats to body image and confidence. Physical symptoms hindered return to work, increasing financial burdens. Survivors' unmet needs included information regarding symptom expectations and management, and ongoing support throughout recovery. Advanced and early‐stage survivors shared similar experiences. Advanced survivors struggled with fear of cancer recurrence/progression and feelings of powerlessness. Functional limitations, financial impacts and sexuality in advanced survivors were underexplored areas. Conclusion: CRC and its treatments impact survivors' QoL in all areas. A coordinated supportive care response is required to address survivors' unmet needs. Future qualitative studies should explore advanced CRC subpopulations, treatment‐specific impacts on QoL and long‐term (>5 years) impacts on CRC survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vulnerable communities (including people from refugee, Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse, and low socioeconomic backgrounds) represent the most at-risk populations facing inequities and negative health, economic, and social outcomes. The recent COVID-19 pandemic both highlighted and fuelled these disparities. Community gardening has emerged as a community-based solution to address these inequities, yet the research literature has largely considered outcomes for the general population rather than those with the most need. This paper represents the first systematic review to summarise the evidence on the broad impact of community gardening on outcomes for vulnerable populations. A systematic search of 13 databases (PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, Education Source, Education Resources Information Center, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, SocINDEX, and Allied Health and Complementary Medicine Database) for English language articles from 1985 to 2022 was conducted. There were 33 studies identified where females were substantially overrepresented in the studies compared to males, and the main criteria for vulnerability included low socioeconomic-status and culturally diverse populations. Findings revealed that community gardening provides a wide range of benefits for vulnerable populations, with social connection, health, education, and nutrition being the more commonly cited. A relative emphasis on benefits of social connections, education, and nutrition is apparent for vulnerable populations in comparison to reviews considering the general population. The quality of studies was evaluated as moderate with little information provided about program characteristics. These shortcomings reduce the understanding of what characteristics are most likely to result in improvements and limit the capacity of practitioners to translate research into policy and practice for vulnerable communities. There is a dearth of research on how negative religious attitudes towards LGBTQ people inform professional practice. This paper reports on a scoping review of 70 selected studies from 25 different countries. It explores key issues and knowledge gaps regarding the delivery of services to LGBTQ adults by religious healthcare, social care and social work organisations and/or practitioners with faith‐based objections to LGBTQ people and their lives. The review identified four main themes: (1) a close connection between religious affiliation and negative attitudes towards LGBTQ people, among both students and professionals; (2) a heightening effect of religiosity, particularly among Christian and Muslim practitioners/students; (3) educators' religious attitudes informing curriculum design and delivery, and some highly religious students resisting and/or feeling oppressed by LGBTQ‐inclusivity, if present; (4) examples of practice concerns raised by professionals and lay LGBTQ people. Case management is a complex intervention aimed at addressing a variety of health needs of people in their social environment. Case management for people with dementia is often poorly defined and insufficiently described. The crucial process steps are often not well understood. We aim to map and compare the key components, processes and contextual factors of case management programmes for dementia and to explore aspects of the interventions' generalisability. Our search covered the databases PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane and GeroLit, as well as policy papers from international organisations. We included qualitative, quantitative and mixed‐methods studies in the English or German language that was published between 1999 and 2020. The programmes were analysed according to programme characteristics, case management intervention and the structural and processing conditions. We identified 67 studies dealing with 25 programmes. Approximately half of the programmes were investigated in randomised controlled trials, two programmes used a mixed‐methods design and the remaining were the subject of pre‐post cohort studies. Participants in the studies were predominantly dyads of people with dementia and their informal caregivers. About half of the programmes reported a theoretical framework. All the programmes were derived from case management approaches or referred to such approaches. Despite huge differences in implementation, all the programmes covered the case management steps. In 14 out of 25 programmes, case management was carried out without additional intervention, the other programmes provided mainly education and training for informal caregivers. Costs of the case management interventions were stated in more than half of the programmes.The effectiveness and generalisability of dementia‐specific case management interventions could be enhanced if the framework introduced in the review was used in the future by policy, practice and research. Patient misunderstanding of cancer clinical trial participation is identified as a critical issue and researchers have developed and tested a variety of interventions to improve patient understanding. This systematic review identified nine papers published between 2000 and 2013, to evaluate the effects of interventions to improve patient understanding of cancer clinical trial participation. Types of interventions included audio-visual information, revised written information and a communication training workshop. Interventions were conducted alone or in combination with other forms of information provision. The nine papers, all with methodological limitations, reported mixed effects on a small range of outcomes regarding improved patient understanding of cancer clinical trial participation. The methodological limitations included: (1) the intervention development process was poorly described; (2) only a small element of the communication process was addressed; (3) studies lacked evidence regarding what information is essential and critical to enable informed consent; (4) studies lacked reliable and valid outcome measures to show that patients are sufficiently informed to provide consent; and (5) the intervention development process lacked a theoretical framework. Aims: This study aimed to systematically examine perceptions of nurses and physicians on pay‐for‐performance in hospital. Background: Pay‐for‐performance projects have proliferated over the past two decades, most systematic reviews of which solely focused on its effectiveness in primary health care and the physicians' or nurses' attitudes. However, systematic reviews of qualitative approaches for better examining perceptions of both nurses and physicians in hospital were lacking. Evaluation: Electronic databases were systematically searched with date from the inception to 31 December 2020. Meta‐aggregation synthesis methodology and the conceptual framework of the theory of planned behaviour were used to summarize findings. Key issues: A total of nine studies were included. Three major synthesized themes were identified: (1) perceptions of the motivation effects and positive outcomes, (2) perceptions about the design defects and negative effects and (3) perceptions of the obstacles in the implementation process. Conclusion: To maximize the intended positive effects, nurses' and physicians' perceptions should be considered and incorporated into the project design and implementation stage. Implications for Nursing Management: The paper gives enlightenment to nurse managers on improving and advancing the cause of nurses when planning for or evaluating their institutions' policies on pay‐for‐performance in the future research. This review aimed to assess participation rates of childhood cancer survivors ( CCS) invited to fill out a health-related questionnaire. Additionally, effects of study and CCS characteristics on participation rates were examined. PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid ( EMBASE) and CINAHL databases were searched. Publications included were questionnaire-based studies among CCS diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21, alive at least 5 years past diagnosis and aged 16 years or older at the time of study. Thirty-five studies were included; the median participation rate was 65%. Sixteen studies reported information about CCS actively declining participation (median rate 5%). Five study characteristics seemed to influence participation rates: the use of reminders and incentives, the option to answer a shortened questionnaire, the recruitment of participants through their general practitioner and a pre-notification before sending out the questionnaire. Furthermore, CCS characteristics related to improved participation were female gender, Caucasian ethnicity and a higher educational level. The results of this study will help to improve the (methodological) quality of future questionnaire-based studies among CCS, thereby increasing our knowledge about late effects among this group of survivors. Consumer-directed care (CDC) is a policy solution for quality deficiencies in aged care where seniors accessing care services are empowered with full choice and flexibility over their service packages. Various programs have been developed using this policy approach around the world, and implementation has invoked a mixture of responses. While consumer organisations welcome a policy direction providing additional choice, there is a concern that this policy complicates the decision-making process, leading people to rely on "rules of thumb" (heuristics) that may not reflect their best interests. Behavioural science provides a lens for looking at heuristics and biases that may occur during complex decision making, particularly as people age. Objective. To explore the presence and influence of heuristics and biases on the decision-making processes of older people receiving home care services under a CDC model. Method. Qualitative systematic review involving systematic searching of PubMed, MEDLINE via Ovid, Embase via Elsevier, CINAHL via Ebsco, PsycINFO via Ovid, Web of Science, Scopus, and EconLit, from inception until 14th April 2022 was undertaken. Identified articles were deduplicated, screened, and extracted for information relevant to the research question using PRISMA guidelines. Data extraction considered descriptive data and metadata including study type, participants, overall objectives, chosen methodologies, and their relationship to the research question. The variety of study types prompted a thematic synthesis to achieve greater comprehension of the existing knowledge base. Results. Descriptive categories were analysed to reveal five themes relevant to the presence and influence of heuristics and biases in decisions made by older people when allocating home care resources. Principally, CDC is implemented to afford autonomy but is complicated by the decision-making environment. Choice and decision making are both specific to the individual, and the processes employed for decision making vary over the life-course. Decision quality can be improved through the identification and mitigation of complicating factors. What is known and objective Quetiapine is a second-generation antipsychotic that is commonly prescribed for a range of approved and off-label indications in older adults. However, little is known about its safety in this population. The available evidence on quetiapine safety is based on studies on second-generation antipsychotics as a group, often in the general population and for approved indications. There are no systematic reviews on the safety of quetiapine in older adults, and therefore, there is a need for systematically assessing quetiapine safety in this group of patients to establish an appropriate safety profile for this vulnerable population. The aim of this paper was to review and describe adverse drug events associated with quetiapine use in older adults. Methods A systematic literature search was performed based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses ( PRISMA) guidelines. Databases searched were CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, PsycInfo and the Cochrane Library. Results and discussion Sixty-nine papers met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the studies ( n = 36, 52%) were observational, and 11 (16%) were randomized controlled trials ( RCTs). Most of the reported indications (75%) were off-label. The most commonly reported adverse events were somnolence (25-39%), dizziness (15-27%), headache (10-23%), postural hypotension (6-18%) and weight gain (11-30%). From the included RCTs, comparing quetiapine with placebo, quetiapine resulted in significantly greater cognitive impairment, higher rates of falls and injury and increased mortality in patients with parkinsonism, but not in patients with dementia. Compared with risperidone and olanzapine, quetiapine had significantly lower risk of mortality, reduced rate of cerebrovascular events, increased rate of falls and injury and less metabolic disorders compared with olanzapine, but higher metabolic disorders compared with risperidone. What is new and conclusion This work provides full characterization of quetiapine safety in older people, which may help healthcare providers better anticipate, prevent and manage ADEs in this population. Aim: To explore nurse leaders' resilience and their role in supporting nurses' resilience during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has challenged health care systems on a global level. Nurse leaders are tasked with ensuring high‐quality care, even during crises, which requires active problem‐solving and confidence in the future—resilience from leaders. Method: A scoping review was conducted using inductive thematic analysis and the PCC (Participants, Concept, Context) framework. The PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases, as well additional studies and grey literature, were searched from December 2019 to June 2021. Results: The review included 12 studies. Nurse leaders' self‐awareness, self‐reflection, and coping strategies described their resilience during the pandemic. A relational leadership style, supportive and safe work environment, and adequate communication were found to support nurses' resilience. Conclusions: There is scarce research concerning nurse leaders' resilience during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Future research needs to address nurse leaders' personal resilience due to the link with nurses' resilience. Implications for Nursing Management: A healthy work environment is essential for nurses' resilience. Abstract: While research indicates that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents may be at increased risk of some sexually transmitted infections, there is limited information about factors that may place these young people at more risk of adverse sexual health than their non‐Indigenous counterparts. Current research has tended to focus on surveillance‐type data, but there is an increasing need to understand social determinants of sexual health risk. This systematic review assessed the evidence of social determinants impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents’ sexual health in Australia. Published, English‐language literature was searched across key databases from 2003 to 2015. Fourteen studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. Findings suggest that social determinants such as access to healthcare, poverty, substance use, educational disadvantage, sociocultural context, gender inequalities, status and identity, and social disadvantage impacted on Indigenous adolescents’ sexual behaviours and sexual health risk. Evidence from the literature included in the review suggests that peer education may be an acceptable and appropriate approach for addressing such issues. There remains a need for programmes and services to be community‐developed and community‐led, thus ensuring cultural appropriateness and relevance. However, there is also a significant need for such programmes to be effectively and rigorously evaluated with data that goes beyond surveillance, and seeks to unpack how sexual norms are experienced by Indigenous adolescents, particularly outside of remote Australia – and how these experiences act as either risk or protective factors to good sexual health and positive social and emotional well‐being. Abstract: Caregivers play a vital role in providing support to adults with a chronic condition, or cognitive or physical impairment. Low health literacy in caregivers has the potential to impact adequate care provision, and consequently, care recipient health outcomes. The aim of the study was to systematically review literature related to health literacy of caregivers of adult care recipients, and examine its relationship with care recipient, and caregiver, health outcomes. Electronic databases were searched for relevant English‐language publications that assessed health literacy in caregivers. Included studies were abstracted into evidence tables and assessed using an eight‐item quality scale. The search identified 2717 new titles and abstracts, with 67 shortlisted for full review. Twelve papers from 2003 to 2015 met the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of limited health literacy in caregivers ranged from 0% to 52.5% depending on the measure and cut‐off criteria used. Associations were found between low caregiver health literacy and (i) poorer care recipient self‐management behaviours; (ii) increased care recipient use of health services; and (iii) increased caregiver burden. The quality of the studies ranged from fair to excellent. Low health literacy in caregivers differed depending on the measures and scoring criteria used. Evidence to support the relationship between caregiver health literacy and care recipient, and caregiver health outcomes was limited to single studies. Recommendations for further research include: the development of caregiver health literacy measures across different populations; examination of associations between caregiver health literacy and care recipient outcomes; and the development of interventions designed to improve caregiver health literacy. Background. Changing demographics has led to healthcare systems reorientating healthcare delivery towards the community setting and implementing integrated models of care worldwide. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of community‐based multidisciplinary integrated care strategies with general practitioner (GP) participation for community‐dwelling older adults and describes the level of care integration in each study. Methods. PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE were systematically searched in February 2024. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or cluster RCTs that focused on interventions for community‐dwelling older adults delivered by health and social care professionals with GPs were included. Two reviewers independently conducted the risk of bias assessment, applied the GRADE tool to quantify the certainty of evidence, and used the rainbow model of integrated care taxonomy to describe the elements of integrated care. Outcomes included functional status, healthcare utilisation, participant satisfaction with care, health‐related quality of life, mortality, nursing home admission, and adverse outcomes. Meta‐analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.4. Results. Twelve trials recruiting 8069 participants across 8 countries were included. Community‐based multidisciplinary team (MDT) integrated care demonstrated significant improvements in functional status (standardised mean difference (SMD): 0.21; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05–0.37; low certainty evidence), hospitalisation (risk ratio (RR): 0.77; 95% CI: 0.63–0.95; very low certainty evidence), and participant satisfaction with care (SMD: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.15–0.76; low certainty evidence) from 12 to 36 months. No statistically significant effects favouring community‐based MDT interventions for functional status at 6‐month follow‐up, emergency department presentation, mortality, health‐related quality of life, or nursing home admission were established. Conclusion. Community‐based MDT integrated care with GP participation improves functional status, reduces hospitalisations, and increases patient satisfaction among community‐dwelling older adults in the long term. Background. The phenomenon of theory‐practice gap has endured within the field of nursing from the era of Florence Nightingale until today, persistently manifesting negative consequences within the profession by accentuating the dichotomy between theoretical understanding and the practical dimensions of nursing. This prevalent issue necessitates comprehensive examination to unveil all the circumstances and variables that fuel the gap, along with exploring viable resolutions to bridge these divides. Objective. To identify, summarize, and synthesize literature on the causes leading to theory‐practice gaps and solutions in nursing profession. Methods. MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, EMCARE, ERIC, and Ovid were searched from 2012 to December 2022. Eligible reviews addressed causes of the theory to practice gap in nursing. Extracted data from included reviews were synthesized using guidelines for meta‐synthesis along with the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for qualitative research. Result. The analysis of studies yielded 22 significant findings, subsequently categorized into six thematic areas based on their contextual similarity. Following this, a meta‐aggregation process combined these categories, generating two synthesized findings: (1) barriers for the gap and (2) facilitators for the gap. Barriers for the gap had three subcategories: "clinical life challenges," "misconception of clinical nursing," and "lack of collaboration between universities and clinical settings." The second synthesis was "Facilitators for the gap" which had two subcategories: "create clinically culture‐based content" and "develop clinically based curriculum." Conclusion. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the current understanding of barriers and facilitators influencing the theory‐practice gap in the field of nursing. To effectively reduce this gap in nursing care, stakeholders such as regulatory bodies, healthcare professionals, and academic institutions must take into account various contextual factors while recognizing the ever‐evolving nature of the healthcare environment. Objective. This paper analyzes the effects of resistance training (RT) on metabolic, neuromuscular, and cardiovascular functions in older adults (mean age ≥ 65 years) with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Research Design and Methods. A systematic review conducted by two reviewers of the published literature produced 3 records based on 2 randomized controlled trials that assessed the effect of RT on disease process measures and musculoskeletal/body composition measures. Statistical, Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 2) software was used to compute Hedge's g, and results were calculated using the random effects model to account for methodological differences amongst studies. Results. Largest effect of RT was seen on muscle strength; especially lower body strength, while the point estimate effect on body composition was small and not statistically significant. The cumulative point estimate for the T2DM disease process measures was moderate and statistically significant. Conclusions. RT generally had a positive effect on musculoskeletal, body composition, and T2DM disease processes measures, with tentative conclusions based on a low number of completed RCTs. Aims: The purpose of this systematic review is to explore military nurses' preparation, deployment and reintegration experiences in order to provide recommendations for effective management of the nursing team. Background: Nurses provide health care in different settings including community, hospital and the disaster site. Military nurses have a long history of deploying for global health. Method: A systematic review and qualitative meta‐synthesis of studies focusing on the preparation, deployment and reintegration experiences of military nurses was carried out. Results: Five synthesized findings were concluded: (a) preparing and sharing experience are the key coping strategies; (b) transition from the civilian care to emergency situations; (c) teamwork contributing to team bonding and the growing role of nursing in the medical team; (d) devoting to nursing duty achieves growth; (e) reintegration is not easy and external support matters. Conclusion: Transition from civilian care to deployment and from structured deployment environment to reintegration poses challenges to nurses, and better preparation, sufficient support enables them to gain growth. Responsibility for health and care services for people with dementia is often divided between various professionals, agencies, and authorities, causing a fragmentation of care and an unclear division of responsibility between different stakeholders. In relation to this, collaboration and coordination of health and care services are often described as vital for catering to diverse needs and to provide adequate support. The aim of this scoping review was to map how different health and care agencies collaborate and coordinate services for older people with dementia. Joanna Briggs Institute's proposed methodology for scoping reviews was used, and systematic searches were carried out in six databases. A total of 59 articles published within the last 10 years were included based on certain eligibility criteria. The Research Pyramid was used to critically appraise these articles, suggesting that available research is of moderate quality. The descriptive content analysis of the articles revealed eight categories describing the characteristics of collaboration and coordination for people with dementia, as presented in previous articles. These characteristics are described in terms of different barriers, the function of the care coordinator, assessment and planning to provide services, interprofessional collaboration, information sharing, knowledge needed to navigate a complex health and care system and understanding of dementia, and personalisation of care. Engaging care coordinators with diverse competencies to address both medical and social care needs is essential, especially since people with dementia experience multiple and complex needs. It is also important to explain and visualise available services and when these services are suitable for implementation. Background. Contextual relevance is an important consideration for evidence-based practice, especially in low- and middle-income countries where the nature of practice may differ from high-income countries. Resources and access to rehabilitation are constrained, and service-users face a range of intersecting challenges to activity and participation. Aim. To evaluate the body of evidence for the effectiveness of occupational therapy in Africa, and to determine if systematic reviews with meta-analysis and/or meta-synthesis are feasible. Methods and Analysis. We conducted a systematic scoping review of published and grey literature by following PRISMA-ScR guidelines across 13 databases and through personal contact with occupational therapists across Africa. Covidence software was used to manage a blind review process by at least three reviewers per included article. The McMaster Quantitative Review Form, NHMRC levels of evidence, the Cochrane PROGRESS-Plus health equity criteria, and the TIDieR checklist informed data extraction using Microsoft Forms. Results. The search yielded 4199 articles, of which 45 were included. Evidence in six fields of practice included paediatrics, mental health, physical rehabilitation, hand therapy, work practice, and community development, although the evidence was largely limited to South Africa (93% studies). Levels of evidence varied but included 13 RCTs. In all, 1957 participants were included, ranging in age from 25 days to 99 years, with a wide range of health conditions. Most studies reported a positive outcome for occupational therapy. Conclusion. Findings suggest a moderate body of evidence to support occupational therapy in Africa. Systematic review with meta-analysis, assessment of risk of bias, and in-depth analysis of specific areas of practice are now required. All effectiveness studies in occupational therapy should include measures of occupational performance or participation, minimum reporting standard checklists should be used more consistently, and effect sizes should be consistently calculated and reported in effectiveness research. Purpose This paper will review published evidence regarding health outcomes and factors associated with caregivers' sleep disturbance. Design and Methods Searches were conducted on CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, and PsycINFO using various keywords. Findings We evaluated 138 abstracts and reviewed 18 articles. Depression is the most reported factor influencing caregivers' sleep. Additional factors are caregivers' psychological distress, demographic, and care recipients' characteristics. Health outcomes of sleep disturbance include poor mental and physical health, reduced quality of life, and elevated coagulation and inflammation levels. Practice Implications Clinicians should screen caregivers' sleep quality so they can assist them with suggestions on maintaining their health while performing caregiving tasks. Aims. This systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesise the results of the studies that examine the relationship between nurse managers' leadership practices and staff nurses' work engagement in hospital settings and to provide recommendations for improvement and further research. Background. A lack of supportive leadership is identified as one of the most common reasons nurses leave employment. To meet the global shortage of nurses, nurse managers need to maximise staff retention and work engagement. Evaluation. A systematic review was conducted to identify research published between 2010 and 2021 and registered in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, EMCare, and Eric databases. The methodology guidelines outlined in the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Methodology for Systematic Reviews were followed, and the results were reported using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (ID CRD42021277463). Key Issue. Eleven (11) studies from 12 articles were included in this review. Three main leadership style themes were identified, and these showed statistically significant direct and indirect relationships with nurses' work engagement: relationally focused, task-focused, and lack of leadership. Work engagement was mainly assessed in terms of dedication, absorption, and vigour. The effects of leadership styles on work engagement were found to be mediated by trust in the leader, environmental resources such as structural empowerment, six work-life areas (workload, control, values, community, rewards, and fairness), person-job fit, organisational support, leader-member exchange, and personal resources such as self-efficacy and decision authority. Conclusion. This review found a significant correlation between positive nurse manager leadership style and the work engagement of registered nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. The results of this review suggest that nursing work engagement can be improved by implementing relational leadership behaviours. The findings of this review will be useful for developing appropriate nurse leaders' leadership styles, improving their workplace environments, and planning leadership training. It is essential to acknowledge the indirect effects of nurse leaders' leadership styles and their mediating factors on work engagement while developing interventions for staff nurses. The health and well-being benefits of outdoor nature-based activity are increasingly recognised, but older people with cognitive impairment face significant barriers to access. The ENLIVEN project aims to promote access by gathering evidence and coproducing guidance for activity providers. As part of this project, we conducted a scoping review to characterise the types of outdoor nature-based activity for older people with dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment for which research evidence is available and the range of outcomes is examined. The protocol is available online. We systematically searched relevant databases from 1st January, 2009, to 20th October, 2022, and screened articles against the following criteria: participants were older people aged 65 and above with cognitive impairment arising from dementia or another health condition. The study described the formal provision of outdoor nature-based activity away from the person's usual place of residence, and at least one outcome of participation in the activity was evaluated. Twenty-eight articles met inclusion criteria, all focused on people with dementia. In most cases, participants were attending day care or living in residential care, and sample sizes ranged from 4 to 136. Activities fell into three groups: green day care (fifteen articles), equine-assisted interventions (seven articles), and community nature-based activities (six articles). Outcome domains explored were connection with nature, activity engagement, impacts on clinical symptoms, functional ability, physical, psychological and social health,, and quality of life. Outdoor nature-based activity can be offered as an opportunity for meaningful occupation to enrich daily life, as a framework for day care provision, or as an intervention to address clinical needs. The evidence base for green day care is relatively established, but the potential for addressing specific clinical needs remains to be explored. The paucity of evidence regarding community provision, especially for those not attending formal care settings, suggests the need for effective knowledge exchange to stimulate initiatives in this area. Aim. To synthesise the available evidence on the applicability of artificial intelligence in nursing care. Background. Artificial intelligence involves the replication of human cognitive abilities in machines, allowing to perform tasks that conventionally necessitate human cognition. However, its application in health sciences is a recent one, and its use is currently limited to supporting the diagnosis and prognosis of hospitalised patients, among others. Evaluation. A systematic review was conducted in the PubMed-Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Nursing & Allied Health databases until September 2022, following the PRISMA guidelines. Key Issues. A total of 21 articles were selected for the review. The different applications of artificial intelligence in nursing identified comprised (i) advances in early disease detection and clinical decision making; (ii) artificial intelligence-based support systems in nursing for patient monitoring and workflow optimisation; and (iii) artificial intelligence insights for nursing training and education. Conclusion. Artificial intelligence-based systems demonstrated increased autonomy of patients and professionals in care processes such as wound management through guided instructions, improved workflows, and efficiency in terms of time, materials, and human resources. Implications for Nursing Management. Artificial intelligence applied to nursing practice can be a very useful resource for professionals, managers, and supervisors. It has the potential to change current working flow systems and may serve as a down-to-earth resource to support nursing professionals in their decision-making process that ensures high quality and patient safety care. Objective. We systematically identified the prevalence of triplex infections (combined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV)) in pregnancy. Methods. To gather information on the frequency of triplex infections, we searched the databases of PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Without regard to language, we utilized search terms that covered HIV, HBV, HCV, and pregnancy. Pregnant women with triplex infections of HIV, HBV, and HCV were included in studies that also examined the prevalence of triplex infections. Review Manager 5.4.1 was employed to conduct the meta-analysis. Critical appraisal and bias tool risk data were provided as percentages with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), and I2 was used as the statistical measure of heterogeneity. The checklist was created by Hoy and colleagues. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO, under the registration number CRD42020202583. Results. Eight studies involving 5314 women were included. We identified one ongoing study. Pooled prevalence of triplex infections was 0.03% (95% CI: 0.02–0.04%) according to meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis demonstrated a significantly high prevalence of 0.08% (95% CI: 0.06–0.10%; 3863 women) in HIV-positive population than 0.00% (95% CI:−0.00-0.00; 1451 women; P < 0.001) in general obstetric population. Moreover, there was a significant difference in the pooled prevalence between studies published between 2001 and 2010 and between 2011 and 2021 (0.14% (95% CI: 0.12 to 0.16 versus 0.03% (95% CI: 0.02 to 0.04%; P < 0.001))) and participants recruited in the period between 2001 and 2011 and between 2012 and 2021 (0.13% (95% CI: 0.05 to 0.21; p = 0.002 versus 0.00% (95% CI: −0.00 to 0.00%; p = 1.00))), respectively. Conclusion. The combined prevalence of prenatal triplex infections was 0.03%, with rates notably higher among the group of pregnant women who were HIV-positive and during the recruitment period that took place before 2012. Objective. This systematic review aimed to provide a critical summary of studies of physical activity (PA) and diet among racial/ethnic minority cancer survivors. Guided by the socio-ecological model, we identified factors across multiple levels—individual, family/social support, provider/team, and organization/local community/policy environment—that affect PA and diet among racial/ethnic minority survivors. Methods. We searched the Ovid MEDLINE, EBSCO CINAHL, Ovid PsycInfo, and PubMed databases. We extracted the behavior of focus (i.e., PA and diet), cancer type, race/ethnicity, and the level(s) of influence (and the corresponding factor(s)), and each eligible study investigated individual (e.g., demographic characteristics, psychological factors), family/social support, provider/team (e.g., healthcare provider recommendations), and organization/local community/policy environment (e.g., neighborhood/social environment). Results. Of 1,603 studies identified, 23 unique studies were eligible. Most studies included breast cancer survivors (n = 19) and Black survivors (n = 13). Seventeen studies assessed associations between PA and factors at the level of the individual (16 studies), family/social support (two studies), provider/team (one study), or organization/local community/policy environment (four studies). Eleven studies assessed associations between diet and factors at the level of the individual (11 studies), family/social support (two studies), provider/team (one study), or organization/local community/policy environment (two studies). Only five studies simultaneously investigated factors across multiple levels. Most demographic and cancer-related factors were not associated with PA or diet. Overall, factors from social-cognitive theories (e.g., self-efficacy) were positively associated with PA. Less consensus was found regarding diet because fewer studies existed, and they also investigated a diverse range of eating behaviors. Conclusions. There is a critical need for studies of PA and diet that investigate multiple levels of influence particularly for Asian American survivors, male survivors, and cancers other than breast cancer. Social-cognitive theories may help guide the designing of multilevel PA interventions for racial/ethnic minority survivors. Aim. The aim of this review was to support nursing management in creating frameworks for the care of people requesting hastened death, based on the best available evidence on the experiences of nurses. Background. The legalisation of hastened death presents nurses with a complex set of ethical and moral risks. The largely unregulated role of nurses in the politics of hastened death can lead to moral distress and burnout. Evaluation. A systematic database search was conducted in CINAHL, LIVIVO, Medline, OVID, and Web of Science. The meta-aggregative approach was used to synthesise the findings. Quality appraisal was done using criteria of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Key Issues. Sixteen studies from four different countries were included. Interview data were from 200 nurses. Meta-aggregation resulted in ten synthesised findings including the need for guidelines; time resources; a supporting team; and professional, social, and personal skills. Conclusions. A working environment with clear guidelines, sufficient resources, structured professional adjustment programmes, and educational measures is supportive for nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing management should create a professional strategy, guidelines, promote good team culture, implement education, and training activities. Nature-based social prescribing such as "blue prescription" promotes public health and health improvement of individuals with long-term health conditions. However, there is limited evidence explaining the relationship of contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes of implementing blue prescription programmes (BPPs) in health and social care settings that could inform policy and practice. We conducted a systematic realist review by searching PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo, Scopus, MEDLINE, and CINAHL for articles published in English between January 2000 and June 2022 about health and social care professionals providing referral to or prescription of blue space activities (e.g., swimming, fishing, surfing, etc.) with health-related outcomes. Components and descriptions of BPP implementation were extracted and used to develop themes of contextual factors used to develop programme theories and a logic model demonstrating the mechanisms of BPP implementation. Sixteen studies with adequate to strong quality were included from 8,619 records. After participating in BPPs referred to or prescribed by health and social care professionals, service users had improvements in their physical, cognitive (mental), social health, and proenvironmental knowledge. Service user-related contextual factors were referral information, free equipment, transportation, social support, blue space environments, and skills of service providers. Programme-related contextual factors were communication, multistakeholder collaboration, financing, and adequate service providers. Programme theories on service user enrolment, engagement, adherence, communication protocols, and programme sustainability explain the mechanisms of BPP implementation. BPPs could promote health and wellbeing if contextual factors and programme theories associated with service users' characteristics and programme delivery are considered in the design, delivery, and evaluation of BPPs. Background. The optimal exercise prescription for coronary artery disease (CAD) remains under debate. The aim of our meta-analysis is to investigate the efficacy of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) versus moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) of coronary artery disease patients. Methods. Electronic databases were searched from their inception date until October 23, 2021, and the articles include randomized controlled trials. The mean differences and 95% confidence intervals were calculated, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test. Results. The study standards were met by seventeen studies. The pooled studies included 902 patients. HIIT resulted in improvement in peak oxygen uptake (1.50 ml/kg/min, 95% confidence interval: 0.48 to 2.53, n = 853 patients, and low quality evidence) compared with MICT. There was no discernible difference between the individuals in the HIIT group and the MICT group in terms of systolic/diastolic blood pressure or peak/resting heart rate. Conclusion. This systematic review and meta-analysis reported the superiority of HIIT versus MICT in enhancing peak oxygen uptake in CAD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This scoping review aimed to identify the existing evidence on how nurse leaders promote and maintain civility amongst nurses in health care settings. Background: Research on managing workplace incivility in nursing, a prevalent and concerning issue worldwide, recommends nurse leaders to command cultural change through strong leadership and civility interventions. However, there is very little empirical evidence summarizing and analysing how nurse leaders pragmatically achieve civility, and combat workplace incivility, in the health care setting. Evaluation: A scoping review was undertaken using the electronic databases CINAHL, Emerald Insight, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, PubMed and Scopus. Google Scholar was used to search for grey literature. Key issues: The eight studies included in this review describe how nurse leaders promote and maintain civility under four key themes: (1) creating a shared vision, (2) educating self and others, (3) fostering accountability and (4) providing support. Conclusion: The review provides an overview of commonly used strategies and actions that pragmatically promote and maintain civility in the health care setting by nurse leaders, while also highlighting areas of future research needed to strengthen the evidence base. Implications for Nursing Management: It is important for nurse leaders to gain an understanding of evidence‐based practices when addressing workplace incivility in order to address this prevailing problem for the future and safety of nurses moving forward. The effect of Reablement, a multi‐faceted intervention is unclear, specifically, which interventions improve outcomes. This Systematic Review evaluates randomised controlled trials (RCTs) describing Reablement investigating the population, interventions, who delivered them, the effect and sustainability of outcomes. Database search from inception to August 2021 included AMED, ASSIA, BNI, CINHALL, EMBASE, HMIC, MEDLINE, PUBMED, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Clinicaltrials.gov. Two researchers undertook data collection and quality assessment, following the PRISMA (2020) statement. They measured effect by changed primary or secondary outcomes: no ongoing service, functional ability, quality of life and mobility. The reviewers reported the analysis narratively, due to heterogeneity of outcome measures, strengthened by the SWiM reporting guideline. The search criteria resulted in eight international studies, five studies had a risk of bias limitations in either design or method. Ongoing service requirement decreased in five studies, with improved effect at 3 months shown in studies with occupational therapist involvement. Functional ability increased statistically in four studies at 3 months. Increase in quality of life was statistically significant in three studies, at 6 and 7 months. None of the studies reported a statistically significant improvement in functional mobility. Reablement is effective in the context of Health and Social Care. The outcomes were sustained at 3 months, with less sustainability at 6 months. There was no statistical result for the professional role regarding assessment, delivery and evaluation of interventions, and further research is justified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collaboration between social workers (SW) and community health workers (CHW) plays an essential role in addressing health inequities in the United States (US). However, little is known about the current state of CHW/SW collaboration. The objectives of this review were to identify (a) the nature, goals and setting of CHWs and SW collaboration; (b) the patient outcomes utilised to measure intervention efficacy. The literature search was conducted in December 2020 using six databases. The inclusion criteria were (1) interventions that included CHWs and SWs; (2) US‐based; (3) published between 2000–2020; (4) peer‐reviewed journal articles; (5) examining health or mental health outcomes. Search results identified 281 articles, and 15 were included in the final analysis. Settings that utilised SW/CHW collaboration included outpatient clinics (n = 10); community organisations (n = 4) or hospital (n = 1). CHW and SW interventions focused on disease prevention (n = 8), chronic care (n = 4) and mental health (n = 3). Health outcomes were the most evaluated (n = 13), and significant improvement of at least one health outcome was reported in those studies. Mental health outcomes (n = 3) were also significantly improved, while social determinants of health (n = 2) were least common and descriptive only. This is the first review of SW and CHW collaboration. Clarity regarding SW and CHW roles and scopes of practice are needed to understand better SW/CHW collaboration and its impacts on community health outcomes and improve the process of collaboration. Prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly prevalent and both conditions have a variety of comorbidities. There are many programs aimed at the reduction or prevention of prediabetes and/or T2DM. However, only a few studies have evaluated the effect of intervention duration and evidence‐based frameworks on specific populations at risk for prediabetes or T2DM. This review evaluated evidence‐based lifestyle intervention programs to determine whether the duration of programming relates to the efficacy of evidence‐based lifestyle change interventions. The aim was to assess relevant outcomes of these interventions in prediabetic or T2DM individuals aged 45 and older. The PRISMA framework was followed. Searches systematically screened and evaluated 2654 articles. Thirteen articles met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Databases searched included: PubMed; SCOPUS; ProQuest; Biomed Central; SpringerLink; ScienceDirect; EBSCOHost; JSTOR; Taylor & Francis; Wiley Online; BioOne; CINAHL; SAGE Journal; and Google Scholar (2009–2022). Identifying the most effective timeframe for lifestyle intervention programming to reduce the risks associated with prediabetes/T2DM can help providers develop appropriate educational initiatives for patients at risk for pre‐diabetes and/or T2DM. After screening, there were 13 studies which met the review criteria. All of the studies included in this comparative review used evidence‐based interventions. Evidence‐based lifestyle intervention programs that are ≥12 months produced significant and consistent results in mediating outcomes related to prediabetes/T2DM than <12‐month programs in adults aged 45 years and older. Global demographic changes and the strategy of 'ageing in place' will increase the importance of home care in the future. To deliver safe and high‐quality care, clinical data on nursing‐sensitive indicators and transparency are needed. A comprehensive narrative review of the literature was conducted to describe the prevalence and incidence of nursing‐sensitive indicators, namely, falls, incontinence, malnutrition, pain, pressure injury and restraints in home care. A literature search was carried out in May 2021 in PubMed and CINAHL, and 28 studies were included. Data were extracted using two extraction tables designed for this review. Prevalence and incidence rates varied widely and internationally within each indicator. The prevalence range for falls was 4.8%–48%; urinary incontinence, 33.7%–62.5%; malnutrition, 20%–57.6%; pain, 6.5%–68.5%; pressure injury, 16%–17.4% and physical restraints, 5%–24.7%. Due to various measurements and different instruments, the rates are not comparable. The use of standardised measurement and risk assessment tools to assess nursing‐sensitive indicators in home care is needed to implement suitable interventions and to prevent these indicators. Risky alcohol consumption among college students is a significant public health issue. In the college setting, students can collaborate in the implementation of peer‐led interventions. To date, evidence of peer‐led programmes in reducing harmful alcohol consumption in this population is inconclusive. The aim of the current scoping review is to provide a broad overview by systematically examining and mapping the literature on peer‐led interventions for preventing risky alcohol consumption by college students. The specific aims were to (1) identify the underlying focus of the interventions and assess their (2) effectiveness and (3) feasibility. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, DART‐Europe, RCAAP, Trove and ProQuest. The inclusion criteria were peer‐led interventions that exclusively addressed alcohol consumption, college students as the target population and interventional studies (randomised controlled trials, quasi‐experimental studies, systematic reviews and meta‐analyses of interventions). The methodological quality of the articles was evaluated. From 6654 potential studies, 13 were included. Nine interventions were described within these studies: Voice of Reason programme, Brief Advice sessions, Peer Theatre, Alcohol Education programme, Perceptions of Alcohol Norms intervention, Motivational Intervention, Alcohol Skills Training programme, Lifestyle Management Class and the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. Only the last showed significant reductions in three of the four outcome measures: quantity and frequency of drinking, estimated peak blood alcohol concentration and alcohol‐related consequences. It did not significantly decrease the number of heavy‐drinking episodes. Peer interventions may be effective in preventing alcohol use among college students, although the evidence is weak and scarce. Due to an increased number of complex multi‐ and long‐term ill patients, healthcare and nursing provided in patients' homes are expected to grow. Teamwork is important in order to provide effective and safe care. As care becomes more complex, the need for teamwork in home care nursing increases. However, the literature on teamwork in the patients' home environment is limited. The aim of this study is to describe the scope of the current literature on teamwork in home care nursing and outline needs for future research. Seven electronic databases were systematically searched and 798 articles were identified and screened. Seventy articles remained and were assessed for eligibility by two of the authors. Eight themes were identified among the 32 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Studies concerned with teamwork regarding isolated tasks/problems and specific teamwork characteristics were most common. Methods were predominantly qualitative. Multiple method approaches and ethnographic field studies were rare. Descriptions of the context were often lacking. The terms 'team' and 'teamwork' were inconsistently used and not always defined. However, it is apparent that teamwork is important and home care nurses play a crucial role in the team, acting as the link between professionals, the patient and their families. Future studies need to pay more attention to the context and be more explicit about how the terms team and teamwork are defined and used. What is known and objective: STOPP/START are explicit screening tools that identify potentially inappropriate prescribing in older adults. Our objective was to update our 2013 systematic review that showed limited evidence of impact, using new evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes in older adults. Methods: Weperformeda search of PubMed,EMBASE,CINAHL, Web of Science and grey literature for RCTs published in English since the previous review through June 2014. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was used. We performed a meta-analysis on the effect of STOPP on potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) rates and a narrative synthesis on other outcomes. Results and discussion: Four RCTs (n = 1925 adults) from four countries were included, reporting both acute (n = 2) and long-term care (n = 2) patients. Studies differed in implementation. Two studies were judged to have low risk, and two to have moderate-to-high risk of bias in key domains. Meta-analysis found that the STOPP criteria reduced PIM rates in all four studies, but study heterogeneity (I² = 86.7%) prevented the calculation of a meaningful statistical summary. We found evidence that use of the criteria reduces falls, delirium episodes, hospital length-of-stay, care visits (primary and emergency) and medication costs, but no evidence of improvements in quality of life or mortality. What is new and conclusion: STOPP/START may be effective in improving prescribing quality, clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to synthesize the studies examining the effects of psychosocial skills training (PSST) on the quality of life of people with schizophrenia using a meta‐analysis. Design and Methods: Fifteen studies were included in the meta‐analysis according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Findings: PSST was found to have a moderate effect on the overall score of quality of life of individuals with schizophrenia, a moderate effect on the psychological dimension, and a low effect on the physical dimension. Practice implications: It can be said that psychosocial skills training is an effective intervention that can be used to improve the quality of life of people with schizophrenia. Introduction: In palliative care, the prevention and relief of fatigue are regarded as crucial goals in patients with cancer. Methods: A systematic review was carried out according to the COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments methodology. Searches were conducted in Medline (through PubMed), Web of Science, Open Gray, Scielo, Cochrane, CINAHL and EMBASE. All instruments found in each study were assessed using the COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments checklist and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Results: A total of 5598 articles were identified in the different databases. In total, 57 studies describing 19 instruments were included in this study. The main properties evaluated were internal consistency, cross‐cultural validity, hypotheses testing and responsiveness. All studies were evaluated with the Strobe scale with a score greater than 6 points. Conclusions: According to the quality methodological results, Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, Problems and Needs in Palliative Care Questionnaire, European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life 15‐item Questionnaire for Palliative Care and Palliative Care Quality of Life Instrument are the recommended instruments used for assessing cancer‐related fatigue in palliative care. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prognostic role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in osteosarcoma. Methods: Systematic searches of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were conducted. The correlation between VEGF expression and patients' survival was our primary endpoint. The secondary endpoints were the associations between VEGF level and patients' sociodemographic and pathological characteristics. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) or odd ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained to assess the associations between VEGF expression and the target factors. Subgroup and meta‐regression analyses were conducted to explore potential factors that associated with VEGF efficacy. Results: The combined HR suggested that a positive VEGF status has a negative impact on overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.58; 95% CI, 2.09–3.19; P < 0.0001) and disease‐free survival (DFS) (HR = 2.54; 95% CI, 1.84–3.50; P < 0.0001) in patients with osteosarcoma. Meta‐regression analysis ruled out the influence of cut‐off value, disease stage, histological subtype, disease grade, tumour location, geographic area, publication year, and method of HR acquisition on heterogeneity. Results showed that VEGF expression was closely correlated with tumour staging, chemotherapy response, and metastasis. Conclusion: Based on the study results, VEGF could serve as an effective biomarker of prognosis in patients with osteosarcoma. Assistive telecare systems (ATSs) have great potential to be beneficial for informal carers (ICs) providing long‐term care to older people (OP). However, little is known about ATS acceptance among ICs. This scoping study aims to investigate various factors that influence the ICs' acceptance of ATSs over time in the pre‐ and post‐implementation phases. A five‐stage scoping study was conducted. A systematic search of five bibliographic databases (Science Direct, Scopus, CINAHL, PubMED and Proquest Social Sciences Database) was conducted in September 2020, supplemented by a round of grey literature searches. Using the established selection criteria, 37 publications published between 2000 and September 2020 were included. The data were analysed with Atlas.ti 8 using content‐based analysis and a combination of deductive and inductive approaches. The results show that work on understanding acceptance of ATS only gained wider attention after 2010. Seven key factors of ATS acceptance were identified: benefits and concerns about ATS, care situation, the influence of the OP, carer characteristics, perceived need to use and social influence. Several subfactors were also found. The post‐intervention acceptance factors were found to be more nuanced than the pre‐implementation factors, indicating that first‐hand experience with ATSs enabled study participants to provide a more tangible, extensive and in‐depth overview of the various ATS acceptance factors. This scoping review is useful for ATS developers, providers, health and social care scholars and practitioners, policy makers and commissioners, all of whom seek to improve and facilitate the provision of long‐term care in the community. Background: Research has shifted in recent decades from a focus on negative effects of adversity, trauma, and stress to protective factors and positive outcomes. Resilience and related concepts (coping, posttraumatic growth, thriving, and preparedness) reflect this shift. However, the current state of literature reflects conceptualization challenges in relation to these terms, which blur their differentiation. Aim: We aim to examine how resilience and related terms are conceptualized in health‐related literature. Design: We used a simultaneous concept analysis to independently explore and further inform the conceptual development of resilience, coping, PTG, and thriving. Data source: We searched PsycINFO and PubMed for literature between 1999 and 2019 for each of our concepts. Review Methods: For each of these concepts, we propose a definition, antecedents, attributes, an example, consequences, and related concepts. Next, we concurrently examined the concepts, compared and contrasted findings across them, and clarified similarities as well as differences between them. Results: Many concepts' definitions lack specificity, clear boundaries, and consistency across the literature. Resilience literature fails to differentiate between attributes and antecedents of resilience. There was overlap regarding conceptualization between resilience and coping, and resilience and thriving. Aim: To identify current evidence on health care managers' competence in knowledge management. Background: Although successful knowledge management improves the quality of care and performance of health care organisations, there is limited evidence on health care managers' competence in knowledge management Evaluation: A scoping review was conducted by including original published and unpublished studies (qualitative, quantitative, and experimental) and review designs in English, Finnish, or Swedish. The studies were retrieved from six databases (CINAHL, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Mednar, and Finnish database Medic) in November 2020 and then complemented in January 2022. Narrative synthesis was used to synthesize data. Key issues: A total of 21 articles was included in the review. The main themes of managers' competence in knowledge management presented in these were system management, professional development, and leadership behaviour and attitude. No valid and reliable instruments were described in the included studies. Conclusion: At present, there is a limited understanding of health care managers' competence in knowledge management. A comprehensive understanding of this topic can provide a direction for future research. Implications for Nursing Management: The results can be utilized in the assessment and development of managers' competence in knowledge management, as well as the formulation of education and in‐service training for health care managers. Expanding on the limited work in supportive care for friends and family caregivers of adults with a primary brain tumour, this review sought to examine all available evidence since 2010 on the efficacy and feasibility of supportive interventions for this population including non‐controlled studies. A systematic review of the literature was conducted on the feasibility and effectiveness/efficacy of supportive interventions for brain cancer caregivers in line with PRISMA guidelines. 13 studies met the eligibility criteria and were identified for inclusion. Most interventions employed tailored psychoeducation, and expert involvement via psychotherapy or care coordination. Only two interventions demonstrated clinically significant improvements. Findings indicate that dyadic yoga programs, and programs that enhance caregiver mastery to manage patient behavioural problems, may lead to improvements in some clinical outcomes. Results highlight the diverse nature of supportive interventions and indicate that support for primary brain tumour caregivers is currently suboptimal. Our findings illustrate an overall low certainty of evidence, with a need for more adequately powered randomised controlled trials. As the complexities of brain cancer care‐giving are an obstacle to standardised interventions, this review underscores the need for future trials to incorporate complimentary qualitative research methodologies. Older people living in care homes should be considered part of the wider local community; however, little is known about what enables them to connect with people not paid to look after them or family members. Volunteering can complement paid and familial support. While volunteering is common in community settings, care home residents are less likely to benefit from their input. We conducted a mixed methods systematic review and stakeholder consultation that aimed to identify volunteer activities in care homes and evidence for their effectiveness and sustainability. Databases were searched from 2000 to July 2021. Studies of all designs reporting volunteer‐led activities with care home residents 65‐years or over were included. Data on interventions, study population, study context, outcomes and implementation issues were extracted and synthesised. We identified 36 studies on the use, effectiveness and implementation of volunteering in care homes, although the overall strength of evidence was weak. Resident engagement and mood appeared to improve during volunteer‐led activities, but there was little research examining the longer‐term impact. Qualitative and stakeholder data suggest considerable investment is needed to initiate and maintain volunteering initiatives, but there are positive benefits for volunteers, residents and staff if an intervention is sustained. Financial cost for care home facilities is unclear. Interventions that address inequalities in accessing volunteer support within the resident population and between facilities should be considered. Background. To simplify traditional Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation and allow researchers to master syndrome differentiation for hypertension, this paper retrospectively studied the literature and analyzed syndrome elements corresponding to hypertension syndromes. Methods. Six databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Chinese Bio-Medical Literature Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and Wan-fang Data were searched from 1/January/2003 to 30/October/2013. We included all clinical literature testing hypertension syndromes and retrospectively studied the hypertension literature published from 2003 to 2013. Descriptive statistics calculated frequencies and percentages. Results. 13,272 patients with essential hypertension were included. Clinical features of hypertension could be attributed to 11 kinds of syndrome factors. Among them, seven syndrome factors were excess, while four syndrome factors were deficient. Syndrome targets were mainly in the liver and related to the kidney and spleen. There were 33 combination syndromes. Frequency of single-factor syndromes was 31.77% and frequency of two-factor syndromes was 62.26%. Conclusions. Excess syndrome factors of hypertension patients include yang hyperactivity, blood stasis, phlegm turbidity, internal dampness, and internal fire. Deficient syndrome factors of hypertension patients are yin deficiency and yang deficiency. Yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, phlegm-dampness retention, and deficiency of both yin and yang were the three most common syndromes in clinical combination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This review aims to examine the prevalence estimate of low resilience among health care professionals and identify the factors affecting the prevalence. Background: Health care professionals experience high levels of stress. Understanding the health care professionals' resilience may provide an insight into how they perform in a highly stressed environment. Evaluation: A comprehensive search of 11 databases was conducted. Studies that provided prevalence rates for low resilience among health care professionals working in a health care setting were included. Meta‐analyses, sensitivity, subgroup analyses and meta‐regression were conducted. Key issues: Among 27,720 studies, 41 studies (N = 17,073) across 16 countries were included. The prevalence of low resilience was 26% (95% CI: 20–32). Subgroup analyses indicated that types of resilience measures affect resilience prevalence significantly. A higher prevalence of low resilience was observed among allied health professions during the COVID‐19 pandemic in the Middle East. Conclusions: This review indicated the prevalence of low resilience and type of resilience measurement instruments that affected the prevalence. Implications for nursing management: This review provides a roadmap to design tailored, discipline‐specific and sustainable resilience training for nurses. Nursing managers should monitor the working hours and workload of nursing staffing in order to provide a protective working environment. Purpose: This study examined the effect sizes of the complementary and traditional practices on the depressive symptom levels in psychiatric patients Design and Methods: The "Health Evidence™ Quality Assessment Tool" and "Comprehensive Meta‐Analysis 3" program was used. Findings: A total of 81 studies with 5934 patients were included. The effect size of the complementary and traditional methods applied to psychiatric patient on depressive symptoms was calculated as d = 0.718 (p = 0.000). According to Cohen, studies have moderate effect size. Acupuncture has been applied as a complementary therapy in stroke survivors worldwide and approved to be beneficial to stroke recovery. However, there is little medical evidence regarding the association between acupuncture and the risk of poststroke comorbidities. We reviewed big data studies from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to investigate the risk of poststroke comorbidities after acupuncture treatment in a real-world situation. Ten English (PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane, Alt HealthWatch, CINAHL, Health Source, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection) and two Chinese (AiritiLibray and Visualizing Health Data) electronic databases were searched from inception until December 2020 for nationalized cohort studies comparing the effects of acupuncture treatment with a nonacupuncture control group among stroke patients. Eight nationalized cohort studies were included. Six of eight studies showed a moderate overall risk of bias, while two studies showed a serious overall risk of bias. Included studies have investigated the effect of acupuncture in reducing the risk of seven medical conditions after stroke, including stroke recurrence, new-onset acute myocardial infarction (AMI), pneumonia, dementia, epilepsy, urinary tract infection (UTI), and depression. The meta-analysis showed clinically significant reductions in the risk of poststroke comorbidities in the acupuncture group compared to the nonacupuncture group (HR, 0.776; 95% CI, 0.719–0.838; p < 0.0001). In this systematic review and meta-analysis of nationalized cohort studies, acupuncture showed clinically relevant benefits in reducing the incidence of poststroke comorbidities, such as stroke recurrence, new-onset acute myocardial infarction (AMI), pneumonia, dementia, epilepsy, and UTI.
