Leyla Cabugos from the University of Hawaii is conducting a research project on green roof applications in the state. She is currently monitoring the growth of five different native Hawaiian ground covers and sedges, and grows each species in different combinations of growing mixes. Green roofs may reduce a building's cooling needs by25%, reduce heat gains by 95%, insulate buildings from sound and can last twice as long as conventional roofs.
