As a regional eco-fiction, Ron Rash’s 2008 novel Serena dramatizes the interference of outside forces in an Appalachian ecosystem during the Great Depression. The fictional Boston Lumber Company spoils the land in order to make profit whereas state official Secretary Albright and preservationist Horace Kephart want to preserve it by creating a national park. The consequences of this dual invasion are disastrous: destruction of wildlife, human displacement, misery and murder. Contemporary critics tend to see Rash either as a mere objective witness to Appalachia’s history or as a voice for the Appalachian minority, the hillbillies. This study aims to show how the actors of this story may they be intradiegetic or extradiegetic — the landscape, the mountaineers and the Appalachian-born author — together create a moderate opposition to outside forces that are still plundering the region. Drawing largely upon Lawrence Buell’s The Future of Environmental Criticism (2005), this study will analyze Serena through the lens of ecocriticism, an ever-growing approach in American studies. It will focus more specifically on the concept of place. In the case of Serena, the dramatization of a place shaped by trans-local entities turns into a manifesto in favor of Appalachia.; Serena, quatrième roman de Ron Rash paru en 2008, est une écofiction qui met en scène l’intervention de forces globales dans une petite communauté des Appalaches pendant la Grande Dépression aux États-Unis. Les critiques contemporains ne s’accordent pas tous sur la portée politique du roman de Rash et font de l’auteur un simple témoin objectif de l’histoire des Appalaches ou un étendard pour les minorités habitant les montagnes, les hillbillies. Cette étude montrera dans quelles mesures les acteurs de la fiction, qu’ils soient intradiégétiques, la montagne, les personnages ou extradiégétiques, l’auteur lui-même, résistent aux invasions extérieures qui continuent de plomber la région. Cette analyse écocritique, approche de plus en plus prometteuse en études américaines, s’inspire de l’étude fondatrice The Future of Environmental Criticism de Lawrence Buell (2005) et utilise le concept de lieu. Dans le cas de Serena, l’invasion d’un lieu par des forces globales devient un manifeste en faveur des Appalaches.

The mission of landscape architecture, as it is defined by Olmsted, is above all social: to improve the living conditions of the population, beginning with the most unfavoured. It is not just a matter of providing breathing spaces, but of allowing people to experience places capable of appeasing their minds.

International audience; We present the largest exome sequencing study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to date (n = 35,584 total samples, 11,986 with ASD). Using an enhanced analytical framework to integrate de novo and case-control rare variation, we identify 102 risk genes at a false discovery rate of 0.1 or less. Of these genes, 49 show higher frequencies of disruptive de novo variants in individuals ascertained to have severe neurodevelopmental delay, whereas 53 show higher frequencies in individuals ascertained to have ASD; comparing ASD cases with mutations in these groups reveals phenotypic differences. Expressed early in brain development, most risk genes have roles in regulation of gene expression or neuronal communication (i.e., mutations effect neurodevelopmental and neurophysiological changes), and 13 fall within loci recurrently hit by copy number variants. In cells from the human cortex, expression of risk genes is enriched in excitatory and inhibitory neuronal lineages, consistent with multiple paths to an excitatory-inhibitory imbalance underlying ASD.

International audience; Sepsis is characterized by a systemic inflammation that can cause an immune dysfunction, for which the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We investigated the impact of cecal ligature and puncture (CLP)-mediated polymicrobial sepsis on monocyte (Mo) mobilization and functions. Our results show that CLP led to two consecutive phases of Mo deployment. The first one occurred within the first 3 days after the induction of the peritonitis, while the second phase was of a larger amplitude and extended up to a month after apparent clinical recovery. The latter was associated with the expansion of Mo in the tissue reservoirs (bone marrow and spleen), their release in the blood and their accumulation in the vasculature of peripheral non-lymphoid tissues. It occurred even after antibiotic treatment but relied on inflammatory-dependent pathways and inversely correlated with increased susceptibility and severity to a secondary infection. The intravascular lung Mo displayed limited activation capacity, impaired phagocytic functions and failed to transfer efficient protection against a secondary infection into monocytopenic CCR2-deficient mice. In conclusion, our work unveiled key dysfunctions of intravascular inflammatory Mo during the recovery phase of sepsis and provided new insights to improve patient protection against secondary infections.

International audience; In April 1935, at the Industrial Arts Exposition organized by the National Alliance of Art and Industry inside the Rockefeller Center in New York City, a model by architect Frank Lloyd Wright was put on display. This model, which has subsequently become very famous, depicted his vision of Broadacre City. Although it has continued to captivate, the public has often disregarded the project’s economic, political, and social dimensions that the model sought to illustrate. With Broadacres, Wright inserted himself into the lively debates happening on the American political and economic scene in the 1920s and 1930s. A native of Wisconsin and deeply attached to the culture of the Midwest, Wright was influenced by the kind of progressive culture that developed in the late nineteenth century – first in the state of Wisconsin, then in Chicago, where he rubbed shoulders with intellectuals in the capital of the Midwest. With Broadacre City, Wright was looking to offer a spatial and architectural transcription of the “organic capitalism” that he was promoting at the time: a capitalism that respects the Earth and the men who inhabit it, the only one that would be compatible with the type of democracy he called for.

We use a multilevel approach to investigate whether a general and robust relationship between weather shocks and (internal and international) migration intentions can be uncovered in Western African countries. We combine individual survey data with measures of localized weather shocks for 13 countries over the 2008–2016 period. A meta-analysis on results from about 51,000 regressions is conducted to identify the specification of weather anomalies that maximizes the goodness of fit of our empirical model. We then use this best specification to document heterogeneous mobility responses to weather shocks. We find that variability in Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index/rainfall is associated with changing intentions to move locally or internationally in a few countries only. However, the significance, sign and magnitude of the effect are far from being robust and consistent across countries. These differences might be due to imperfections in the data or to differences in long-term climate conditions and adaptation capabilities. They may also suggest that credit constraints are internalized differently in different settings, or that moving internally is not a relevant option as weather conditions are spatially correlated while moving abroad is an option of last resort. Although our multilevel approach allows us to connect migration intentions with the timing and spatial dimension of weather shocks, identifying a common specification that governs weather-driven mobility decisions is a very difficult, if not impossible, task, even for countries belonging to the same region. Our findings also call for extreme caution before generalizing results from specific case studies.

This study aims to ascertain the views of families and professionals on early detection, diagnosis and intervention services for young children with ASD. An online survey compiled and analysed data from 2032 respondents across 14 European countries (60.9% were parents; 39.1% professionals). Using an ordinal scale from 1 to 7, parents' opinions were more negative (mean = 4.6; SD 2.2) compared to those of professionals (mean = 4.9; SD 1.5) when reporting satisfaction with services. The results suggest services should take into account child's age, delays in accessing services, and active stakeholders' participation when looking to improve services. Based on sources from organizations that support exiles, this article seeks, on the contrary, to address the reception of refugees in Canada and the role of the United States in it. This article will analyze the creation of the Canadian "refugee" class as the result of dealing with a particular group: the “interned refugees". We will show that the United States’ refusal to receive internees forced them to remain in Canada, which was then forced to grant them a status – that of refugee – thus formalizing the Canadian refuge.; Avec la parution au début des années 1980 de None is Too Many, l’histoire du Canada pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale se résume à un refus gouvernemental d’accepter des réfugiés. International audience; Acid-driven multiphase chemistry of isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX), key isoprene oxidation products, with inorganic sulfate aerosol yields substantial amounts of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) through the formation of organosulfur compounds. The extent and implications of inorganic-to-organic sulfate conversion, however, are unknown. In this report, we demonstrate that extensive consumption of inorganic sulfate occurs, which increases with the IEPOX-to-inorganic sulfate concentration ratio (IEPOX:Sulf inorg), as determined by laboratory measurements. Characterization of total sulfur aerosol observed at Look Rock, Tennessee, from 2007-2016 shows that organosulfur mass fractions will likely continue to increase with ongoing declines in anthropogenic Sulf inorg , consistent with our laboratory findings. We further demonstrate that organosulfur compounds greatly modifies critical aerosol properties, such as acidity, morphology, viscosity, and phase state. These new mechanistic insights demonstrate that changes in SO 2 emissions, especially in isoprene-dominated environments, will significantly alter biogenic SOA physicochemical properties. Consequently, IEPOX:Sulf inorg will play an important role in understanding historical climate and determining future impacts of biogenic SOA on global climate and air quality.

The purpose of this text is to highlight the variety of registers of opposition to central state policy that draw inspiration from the spaces of politics (electoral struggles), policies (production of public policy in the fields of security and economic development), as well as polity (principles and values). These controversies raise the question of broader dynamics of power relations between the State and local authorities.; L’accession de Donald Trump à la Maison-Blanche en janvier 2017 et ses premières initiatives en matière de politique migratoire ont provoqué une opposition de la part d’un certain nombre de villes et d’États fédérés américains. Background Oomycetes are a group of filamentous eukaryotic microorganisms that have colonized all terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems, and they include prominent plant pathogens. The Aphanomyces genus is unique in its ability to infect both plant and animal species, and as such exemplifies oomycete versatility in adapting to different hosts and environments. Dissecting the underpinnings of oomycete diversity provides insights into their specificity and pathogenic mechanisms. Results By carrying out genomic analyses of the plant pathogen A. euteiches and the crustacean pathogen A. astaci, we show that host specialization is correlated with specialized secretomes that are adapted to the deconstruction of the plant cell wall in A. euteiches and protein degradation in A. astaci. The A. euteiches genome is characterized by a large repertoire of small secreted protein (SSP)-encoding genes that are highly induced during plant infection, and are not detected in other oomycetes. Functional analysis revealed an SSP from A. euteiches containing a predicted nuclear-localization signal which shuttles to the plant nucleus and increases plant susceptibility to infection. Conclusion Collectively, our results show that Aphanomyces host adaptation is associated with evolution of specialized secretomes and identify SSPs as a new class of putative oomycete effectors. From the 1890's on, the construction of American national identity and of the modern citizen draws on various definitions of the notion of folk music, produced by various intellectual circles and supported by the development of field collecting, to result towards the end of the New Deal Era in a tentative consensus on the basic content and the very existence of American Folk Music. Composers and musicologists address American Folk Music as a tool to try and set up an American composition school to rival the european ones. Academic folklorists approach it as a scholarly object through a text-centered paradigm requiring its linguistic anglo-centeredness. Anthropologists apply the notion to Amerindian, then later on Black-American musics. Along with the psychologists, they introduce in its definition the new concepts and bias of the competing evolutionist, diffusionist, functionalist and relativist theoretical schools. Progressive educators and social workers use it in their social engineering programs, most importantly in the Americanization-related ones.These various paradigms coexist, compete, and influence each other until the 1930's, when the institutionalization of American Folk Music inside Federal State agencies encourages a synthesis of these different approaches. The present thesis aims to describe the works and ideas of these various contributors to the invention of the American Folk Music through the study of the life and career of one of the New Deal collectors instrumental in this synthesis, Sidney Robertson., À partir des années 1890, la construction de l’identité nationale américaine et d’un citoyen moderne mobilise différentes définitions de la notion de folk music, issues de différents milieux intellectuels et fondées sur une multiplication des collectes, pour culminer à la fin du New Deal en l’établissement d’un consensus sur l’existence et le contenu de base de l'American Folk Music. Compositeurs et musicologues construisent l’American Folk Music pour tenter de fonder une école de composition américaine qui rivaliserait avec les écoles européennes. Les folkloristes universitaires l’abordent en tant qu’objet d’étude, selon une approche textualiste et donc nécessairement anglo-centrée. Des anthropologues se saisissent aussi de cette notion pour l'appliquer aux musiques amérindiennes, puis à celles des Noirs-Américains. Avec les psychologues, ils y introduisent les influences des approches évolutionniste, diffusionniste, fonctionnaliste et relativiste. Éducateurs progressistes et travailleurs sociaux l’emploieront dans des projets d’ingénierie sociale, notamment en relation avec le mouvement d'américanisation. Tous ces paradigmes coexistent et s’opposent ou s’influencent jusque dans les années 1930, moment où l’institutionnalisation de l’American Folk Music au sein de l’État fédéral conduit à une rencontre et une forme de synthèse de toutes ces approches. Cette thèse explore les travaux des inventeurs de l’American Folk Music autour du parcours d’une des collectrices qui établissent la synthèse new-dealienne, Sidney Robertson.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [ADD1_IRSTEA]Adaptation des territoires au changement global; International audience; Midlatitude synoptic weather regimes account for a substantial portion of annual precipitation accumulation as well as multi-day precipitation extremes across parts of the United States (US). However, little attention has been devoted to understanding how synoptic-scale patterns contribute to hourly precipitation extremes. A majority of 1-h annual maximum precipitation (AMP) across the western US were found to be linked to two coherent midlatitude synoptic patterns: disturbances propagating along the jet stream, and cutoff upper-level lows. The influence of these two patterns on 1-h AMP varies geographically. Over 95% of 1-h AMP along the western coastal US were coincident with progressive midlatitude waves embedded within the jet stream, while over 30% of 1-h AMP across the interior western US were coincident with cutoff lows. Between 30-60% of 1-h AMP were coincident with the jet stream across the Ohio River Valley and southeastern US, whereas a a majority of 1-h AMP over the rest of central and eastern US were not found to be associated with either midlatitude synoptic features. Composite analyses for 1-h AMP days coincident to cutoff lows and jet stream show that an anomalous moisture flux and upper-level dynamics are responsible for initiating instability and setting up an environment conducive to 1-h AMP events. While hourly precipitation extremes are generally thought to be purely convective in nature, this study shows that large-scale dynamics and baroclinic disturbances may also contribute to precipitation extremes on sub-daily timescales.

La titrisation porte une charge négative tant dans l’opinion commune que dans le monde économique et financier. Elle est associée aux dérives à l’origine de la dernière crise financière. L’opération est controversée : certains acteurs considèrent ce système comme indispensable et souhaitent l’utiliser en toute liberté ; différents observateurs sont eux favorables à sa suppression. Pour dépassionner ce débat, il est utile de décortiquer le mécanisme, et à ce titre l’approche juridique est efficace. C’est l’objet de cet ouvrage.L’optique choisie consiste à présenter l’origine de ce mécanisme et son développement dans les systèmes juridiques anglo-américain et dans ceux dits « de droit civil ». Ce retour historique dans une perspective élargie éclaire la titrisation pratiquée aujourd’hui dans les cadres européen et français. Tout d’abord, même si le mécanisme paraît complexe, vue du droit, la titrisation est l’articulation d’une succession de techniques juridiques classiques simples à appréhender. Décomposer ce mécanisme permet ainsi au non-spécialiste de comprendre la titrisation. Ensuite, l’évolution du droit positif, sous l’impulsion européenne, consacre un point notable. Désormais, dans le Code monétaire et financier, les organismes de titrisation appartiennent à la nouvelle catégorie des « organismes de financement ». Cette architecture renouvelée du code fournit un renseignement clair sur la nature de la titrisation : cette opération appartient à la sphère du droit des marchés financiers aussi bien qu’à celle du droit du financement d’activité ou de projet… une dimension, longtemps occultée, que portait la technique. Objective To assess the association of low socioeconomic status and risk factors for non-communicable diseases (diabetes, high alcohol intake, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking) with loss of physical functioning at older ages. Design Multi-cohort population based study. Setting 37 cohort studies from 24 countries in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa, and Asia, 1990-2017 Participants 109 107 men and women aged 45-90 years. Main outcome measure Physical functioning assessed using the walking speed test, a valid index of overall functional capacity. Years of functioning lost was computed as a metric to quantify the difference in walking speed between those exposed and unexposed to low socioeconomic status and risk factors. Results According to mixed model estimations, men aged 60 and of low socioeconomic status had the same walking speed as men aged 66.6 of high socioeconomic status (years of functioning lost 6.6 years, 95% confidence interval 5.0 to 9.4). The years of functioning lost for women were 4.6 (3.6 to 6.2). In men and women, respectively, 5.7 (4.4 to 8.1) and 5.4 (4.3 to 7.3) years of functioning were lost by age 60 due to insufficient physical activity, 5.1 (3.9 to 7.0) and 7.5 (6.1 to 9.5) due to obesity, 2.3 (1.6 to 3.4) and 3.0 (2.3 to 4.0) due to hypertension, 5.6 (4.2 to 8.0) and 6.3 (4.9 to 8.4) due to diabetes, and 3.0 (2.2 to 4.3) and 0.7 (0.1 to 1.5) due to tobacco use. In analyses restricted to high income countries, the number of years of functioning lost attributable to low socioeconomic status by age 60 was 8.0 (5.7 to 13.1) for men and 5.4 (4.0 to 8.0) for women, whereas in low and middle income countries it was 2.6 (0.2 to 6.8) for men and 2.7 (1.0 to 5.5) for women. Within high income countries, the number of years of functioning lost attributable to low socioeconomic status by age 60 was greater in the United States than in Europe. Physical functioning continued to decline as a function of unfavourable risk factors between ages 60 and 85. Years of functioning lost were greater than years of life lost due to low socioeconomic status and non-communicable disease risk factors. Conclusions The independent association between socioeconomic status and physical functioning in old age is comparable in strength and consistency with those for established non-communicable disease risk factors. The results of this study suggest that tackling all these risk factors might substantially increase life years spent in good physical functioning. International audience; We conducted an experiment to study the fiscal impacts of unhealthy food taxes and healthy food subsidies on very low and medium income women in France. The policies tend to be regressive and favour the higher income consumers. Unhealthy food taxes increase prices paid more for low than higher income women. Healthy food subsidies reduce the prices paid more for higher than lower income women. The effects arise because the pre-policy diets of the higher income women tend to be healthier but also because the choices of the higher income women are more responsive to price changes.

International audience; Six months after President Trump took office at the White House, can we see a change in US foreign policy through voting and debates in the UN Security Council? It is undoubtedly too early to decide, since the establishment of the administration, and in particular of the secretariat of State, is proving difficult. The Secretary of State does not give real impetus to foreign policy and is limited to the administration of the secretariat whereas the direct role of the entourage of the president is considerable. With the appointment of Ms. N. Haley as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the Security Council, some trends nevertheless appear but they are not very original.Between 20 January and 30 June 2017, the Security Council adopted 28 resolutions unanimously and sometimes without genuine debate. Only two draft resolutions submitted, inter alia, by the United States, were not adopted as a result of russian’s veto. Both concerned the situation in Syria on which the positions of the Westerners and Russia are for the moment irreconcilable. On the other hand, unanimity was obtained on the fight against terrorism, on the peace operations that the United States want much more effective but also on the nuclear issue posed by North Korea, even if Washington wants a commitment much most important of China.While President Trump and also Mrs. Haley have repeatedly considered the possibility for the United States to act unilaterally with military means, it seems that the choice between unilateralism and multilateralism, but also between diplomacy and the use of force, is not sliced.; Six mois après que le président Trump ait pris ses fonctions à la Maison Blanche, peut-on constater une évolution de la politique étrangère américaine à travers les votes et les débats au Conseil de sécurité ? Par contre, l’unanimité a été obtenue sur la lutte contre le terrorisme, sur les opérations de paix que les Etats-Unis souhaitent beaucoup plus efficaces mais également sur la question nucléaire posée par la Corée du Nord, même si Washington souhaite un engagement beaucoup plus important de la Chine. Alors que le président Trump mais également Mme Haley ont envisagé à plusieurs reprises la possibilité pour les Etats-Unis d’agir unilatéralement avec des moyens militaires, il semble cependant que le choix entre unilatéralisme et multilatéralisme mais également diplomatie et emploi de la force ne soit pas tranché.

Biomass and leaf area equations are often required to assess or model forest productivity, carbon stocks and other ecosystem services. These factors are influenced by climate, age and stand structural attributes including stand density and tree species diversity or species composition. However, such covariates are rarely included in biomass and leaf area equations. We reviewed the literature and built a database of biomass and leaf area equations for 24 European tree species and 3 introduced species. The final dataset contained 973 equations. Most of the equations were site-specific and therefore restricted to the edaphic, climatic and stand structural conditions of the given site. To overcome this limitation, the database was used to develop regional species-specific equations that can be used in a wide range of stands and to quantify the effects of climate, age and stand structure on biomass or leaf area. The analysis showed considerable inter- and intra-specific variability in biomass relationships. The intra-specific variability was related to climate, age or stand characteristics, while the inter-specific variability was correlated with traits such as wood density, specific leaf area and shade tolerance. The analysis also showed that foliage mass is more variable than stem or total aboveground biomass, both within and between species, and these biomass components have contrasting responses to age and changes in stand structure. Despite the large number of published equations, many species are still not well represented. Therefore, generic equations were developed that include species-specific wood density instead of species identity. Further improvements may be possible if future studies quantify the stand structure of individual tree neighbourhoods instead of using the stand means for all trees sampled with the given stand. © 2017 The Authors

A new global estimate of surface turbulent fluxes, latent heat flux (LE) and sensible heat flux (H), and gross primary production (GPP) is developed using a machine learning approach informed by novel remotely sensed solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) and other radiative and meteorological variables. This is the first study to jointly retrieve LE, H, and GPP using SIF observations. The approach uses an artificial neural network (ANN) with a target dataset generated from three independent data sources, weighted based on a triple collocation (TC) algorithm. The new retrieval, named Water, Energy, and Carbon with Artificial Neural Networks (WECANN), provides estimates of LE, H, and GPP from 2007 to 2015 at 1° × 1° spatial resolution and at monthly time resolution. The quality of ANN training is assessed using the target data, and the WECANN retrievals are evaluated using eddy covariance tower estimates from the FLUXNET network across various climates and conditions. When compared to eddy covariance estimates, WECANN typically outperforms other products, particularly for sensible and latent heat fluxes. Analyzing WECANN retrievals across three extreme drought and heat wave events demonstrates the capability of the retrievals to capture the extent of these events. Uncertainty estimates of the retrievals are analyzed and the interannual variability in average global and regional fluxes shows the impact of distinct climatic events – such as the 2015 El Niño – on surface turbulent fluxes and GPP.

International audience; A novel candidate species of the liberibacter genus, Candidatus Liberibacter brunswickensis' (CLbr), was identified in the Australian eggplant psyllid, Acizzia solanicola. This is the first discovery of a species belonging to the liberibacter genus in Australia and the first report of a liberibacter species in the psyllid genus Acizzia. This new candidate liberibacter species has not been associated with plant disease, unlike other psyllid-vectored species in the genus including Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas), Candidatus Liberibacter africanus' (CLaf) and Ca. Liberibacter solanacearum' (CLso). This study describes novel generic liberibacter genus primers, used to screen Australian psyllids for the presence of microflora that may confound diagnosis of exotic pathogens. CLbr forms a unique clade in the liberibacter genus based on phylogenetic analysis of the 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) region and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of seven highly conserved genes, dnaG, gyrB, mutS, nusG, rplA, rpoB and tufB. The MLSA mapping approach described in this article was able to discriminate between two Ca. Liberibacter' species within a metagenomic data set and represents a novel approach to detecting and differentiating unculturable species of liberibacter. Further, CLbr can confound the Li et al. (2006) quantitative PCR (qPCR) diagnostic tests for CLas and CLaf.

Deep sea mining in maritime areas within national jurisdiction (that is, the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf), as opposed to maritime areas beyond national jurisdiction, is the focus of this paper. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, states have sovereign rights for exploring and exploiting the natural resources of their exclusive economic zones and their continental shelves, which measure at least 200 nautical miles from their coasts. They are also responsible for protecting the marine environment in these zones as well as managing and conserving the resources within their exclusive economic zones. To this end, therefore, they may enact whatever laws they deem fit to meet these obligations. This state of affairs reveals the undesirable possibility of the application of different standards for marine environmental protection insofar as it concerns deep sea mining. In view of the negative impact on the environment that these mining activities could occasion and in light of limited knowledge of the extent thereof, scholars have called for the application of the precautionary principle to halt deep sea mining or for the adoption of an international legal framework to guarantee protection of the marine environment. In the absence of any such international legal framework and in view of increasing interest in deep sea mining, this paper embarks on a comparative analysis of three of the few available deep seabed mining laws, namely those of Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands and the United States of America, accessing their fitness for purpose in terms of the protection of the marine environment and identifying best practices, trends and loopholes that might be useful as preparatory material for any future conclusion of an internationally acceptable legal framework for deep sea mining. This is based on the notion that a legal regulatory framework is vital in the quest to protect the marine environment., La présente étude est consacrée à l'exploitation minière en haute mer dans les zones maritimes relevant de la juridiction nationale (c'est-à-dire la zone économique exclusive ZEE et le plateau continental), par opposition aux zones maritimes au-delà de la juridiction nationale. En vertu de la Convention des Nations Unies sur le droit de la mer (1982), les États ont des droits souverains pour explorer et exploiter les ressources naturelles de leurs zones économiques exclusives et de leurs plateaux continentaux, qui se trouvent à moins de 200 milles marins de leurs côtes, plus les extensions. Ils sont également responsables de la protection de l'environnement marin dans ces zones ainsi que de la gestion et de la conservation des ressources dans leurs zones économiques exclusives. À cette fin, ils peuvent adopter les lois qu'ils jugent appropriées pour remplir ces obligations. Cet état de choses révèle la possibilité indésirable d'appliquer des normes différentes pour la protection de l'environnement marin dans la mesure où elle concerne l'exploitation minière en haute mer. Compte tenu de l'impact négatif sur l'environnement que ces activités minières pourraient occasionner, et à la lumière d'une connaissance limitée de leur ampleur, les chercheurs ont appelé à l'application du principe de précaution pour mettre un terme à l'exploitation minière en haute mer ou pour l'adoption d'un cadre juridique international pour assurer la protection du milieu marin. En l'absence d'un tel cadre juridique international et compte tenu de l'intérêt croissant porté à l'exploitation minière en haute mer, le présent document s'attache à une analyse comparative des quelques lois sur l'exploitation minière des fonds marins disponibles, à savoir celle des États-Unis d'Amérique, des Îles Cook et de la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, leur accès à la protection du milieu marin et l'identification des meilleures pratiques, des tendances et des échappatoires qui pourraient être utiles comme matériel préparatoire à toute future conclusion d'un cadre juridique internationalement acceptable pour l’exploitation minière en haute mer. Cette réflexion repose sur l’idée qu’un cadre réglementaire légal est essentiel dans la quête de la protection du milieu marin.

Nations are based on myths, and in the United States, it is the president who is the “storyteller-in-chief” of those sacred stories whose function is to give sense to the existence of the national community. This dissertation offers to examine to what extent the end of the Cold War, which represents a breaking point in the mental representation of the nation, has produced a new discourse in national mythology in presidential speeches. Our research will focus more specifically on the notion that metaphors inform us on the shared beliefs of a given society as cognitive linguistics and critical discourse analysis have largely demonstrated. In our first part, we will concentrate on the myths of virtue and good, and more particularly on the use of religious language which has greatly increased over the period, and on the value of “freedom” that has remained the founding value of the American identity but whose definition has evolved to underline the notion of free will of individuals as opposed to the collective Manifest Destiny rooted in Calvinistic predestination. These myths serve as moral justifications to the rhetoric of power and strength that will be the object of our second part. We will show how the steady presence of war narratives and war metaphors ascribe mythical meaning to violence. Finally, in our third part, we will see how only the heroic narrative illustrates the fusion of the myths of power and virtue and actually constitutes the essential narrative framework in post-Cold War presidential speeches. We will then conclude on the proposition that while the heroic myth may have been fostered by the end of the Cold War, it originated in the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan that might be the most significant breaking point and the beginning of an entire new ideological and political cycle.; Une nation est toujours fondée sur des mythes. Cette thèse propose d’examiner dans quelle mesure la rupture dans l’imaginaire collectif que représente la fin de la guerre froide a engendré une nouvelle rhétorique de la mythologie nationale dans les discours présidentiels. Pour cela, nous nous appuierons sur l’étude de métaphores qui, comme l’ont démontré l’analyse critique du discours et la linguistique cognitive, nous informe sur les croyances collectives d’une société. Dans une première partie, nous nous focaliserons sur les mythes de la vertu et du bien, plus particulièrement sur le langage religieux qui s’est développé dans la période post-guerre froide, et sur la valeur de liberté qui demeure fondatrice de l’identité américaine, mais dont la définition évolue et souligne davantage le libre arbitre de l’individu par opposition au destin manifeste collectif fondé sur la prédestination calviniste. Ces mythes de vertu servent de justification morale à une rhétorique de la puissance et de la force qui fera l’objet de notre analyse dans notre seconde partie. Nous montrerons combien la permanence du récit de guerre et les nombreuses métaphores guerrières rendent compte d’un système de représentation du monde qui donne une signification mythique à la violence. Enfin, dans une troisième partie, nous verrons que seul le récit héroïque illustre l’alliance de la puissance et de la vertu et constitue finalement la trame narrative essentielle du mythe national de l’ère post-guerre froide. Nous conclurons sur la proposition que, si la fin de la guerre froide a favorisé le développement du mythe héroïque dans les discours présidentiels, celui-ci est enraciné dans la rhétorique de Ronald Reagan qui représente le point de rupture le plus significatif dans la production de la mythologie nationale récente ainsi que le point de départ de tout un cycle idéologique et politique.

Even though terrorist violence is defined by a manifest political agenda, for decades Hollywood has created terrorist vilains with no specific political motivations. This study argues that the apparent lack of political content in the fictional representations of terrorism is actually compensated by an other political agenda that has to be read onto the bodies of those fictional terrorists and appears chiefly through gender, race and sexuality. Following a chronological approach, this study systematically connects the historical, sociological, and cultural contexts of production in order to highlight how Hollywood constructed an archetypal character of which unique features consist of communicating different speeches that help the dominant American cultural groups to permanently negotiate and strengthen their hegemonic power. After locating its origins in the spy fiction films of the 1960’s, we have studied the representations of terrorism over five decades. We were then able to demonstrate that the attacks of 9/11 were not a critical shift in Hollywood depiction of terrorism but rather forced the industry to leave behind a fictional construction which became unbearable after its emergence in what we have called « a postmodern reality ».; La violence terroriste se définit principalement par le projet politique qui la motive. Or, depuis plusieurs décennies, Hollywood propose des personnages terroristes sans motivations politique avérées. Notre étude montre que la dépolitisation apparente de ces antagonistes particuliers fait entrer la représentation du terroriste dans une politique identitaire complexe dans laquelle le corps du personnage devient le véhicule principal du discours politique et que ce dernier porte principalement sur la renégociation des identités culturelles américaines, notamment sur les questions de races, de genres et de sexualités. À travers une approche historique qui relie en permanence les représentations analysées aux contextes sociologiques et culturels dans lesquels elles apparaissent, cette thèse montre comment Hollywood crée un archétype dont les caractéristiques principales reposent sur sa capacité à assurer une renégociation permanente des catégories identitaires dominantes afin de renforcer leur légitimité et leur hégémonie. En situant la genèse du personnages dans les films d’espionnage de la Guerre froide, cette étude couvre cinq décennies de production hollywoodienne sur le terrorisme et montre ainsi que les attaques du 11 septembre 2001 n’engendrent pas de rupture majeure dans ce domaine mais forcent plutôt l’industrie à abandonner un archétype que la postmodernité a rendu ingérable.

Here, we co-cultured U87 human glioblastoma cells and human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC) to demonstrate the exchange of microRNAs that initially involve the formation of gap junction communications between the two cell types. The functional inhibition of gap junctions by carbenoxolone blocks the transfer of the anti-tumor miR-145-5p from HMEC to U87, and the transfer of the pro-invasive miR-5096 from U87 to HMEC. These two microRNAs exert opposite effects on angiogenesis in vitro. MiR-5096 was observed to promote HMEC tubulogenesis, initially by increasing Cx43 expression and the formation of heterocellular gap junctions, and secondarily through a gap-junction independent pathway. Our results highlight the importance of microRNA exchanges between tumor and endothelial cells that in part involves the formation of functional gap junctions between the two cell types.

For 100 years, it has been obvious that Salmonella enterica strains sharing the serotype with the formula 1,4,[5],12:b:1,2—now known as Paratyphi B—can cause diseases ranging from serious systemic infections to self-limiting gastroenteritis. Despite considerable predicted diversity between strains carrying the common Paratyphi B serotype, there remain few methods that subdivide the group into groups that are congruent with their disease phenotypes. Paratyphi B therefore represents one of the canonical examples in Salmonella where serotyping combined with classical microbiological tests fails to provide clinically informative information. Here, we use genomics to provide the first high-resolution view of this serotype, placing it into a wider genomic context of the Salmonella enterica species. These analyses reveal why it has been impossible to subdivide this serotype based upon phenotypic and limited molecular approaches. By examining the genomic data in detail, we are able to identify common features that correlate with strains of clinical importance. The results presented here provide new diagnostic targets, as well as posing important new questions about the basis for the invasive disease phenotype observed in a subset of strains., IMPORTANCE Salmonella enterica strains carrying the serotype Paratyphi B have long been known to possess Jekyll and Hyde characteristics; some cause gastroenteritis, while others cause serious invasive disease. Understanding what makes up the population of strains carrying this serotype, as well as the source of their invasive disease, is a 100-year-old puzzle that we address here using genomics. Our analysis provides the first high-resolution view of this serotype, placing strains carrying serotype Paratyphi B into the wider genomic context of the Salmonella enterica species. This work reveals a history of disease dating back to the middle ages, caused by a group of distinct lineages with various abilities to cause invasive disease. By quantifying the key genomic differences between the invasive and noninvasive populations, we are able to identify key virulence-related targets that can form the basis of simple, rapid, point-of-care tests.

IF 2.415; International audience; Data on anal cancer epidemiology are rare. The aim of this study was to report on trends of incidence and survival for anal cancer in France before the implementation of the human papilloma virus vaccine. This analysis was carried out on 1150 squamous-cell carcinomas of the anal canal diagnosed from 1989 to 2004 in a population of 5.7 million people covered by eight population-based cancer registries. Time trends in incidence were modeled using an age-period-cohort model. Net survival rates were obtained using the recently validated unbiased Pohar-Perme estimator. The incidence of squamous-cell carcinoma of the anal canal increased from 0.2 to 0.5/100 000 person-years among men and from 0.7 to 1.3/100 000 person-years among women from 1982 to 2012. Among women, the increase peaked after 2005, with an annual percentage change of +3.4% between 2005 and 2012, as compared with +2.6% among men. The net survival was 56% (95% confidence interval, 49-64) at 5 years and 48% (33-70) at 10 years among men. It was higher among women, at 65% (61-69) and 56% (50-63) at 5 and 10 years, respectively. The prognosis improved between 1989-1997 and 1998-2004. This improvement was slightly greater for men than for women, thus progressively reducing the gap between sexes. The incidence of squamous-cell anal canal cancer increased slightly among both sexes, but the increase was more marked among women than among men. The potential benefit of prophylactic female human papilloma virus vaccination against cervical cancer in France should be further evaluated.

Background West Nile virus (WNV) is a highly pathogenic flavivirus transmitted by Culex spp. mosquitoes. In North America (NA), lineage 1 WNV caused the largest outbreak of neuroinvasive disease to date, while a novel pathogenic lineage 2 strain circulates in southern Europe. To estimate WNV lineage 2 epidemic potential it is paramount to know if mosquitoes from currently WNV-free areas can support further spread of this epidemic. Methodology/Principal Findings We assessed WNV vector competence of Culex pipiens mosquitoes originating from north-western Europe (NWE) in direct comparison with those from NA. We exposed mosquitoes to infectious blood meals of lineage 1 or 2 WNV and determined the infection and transmission rates. We explored reasons for vector competence differences by comparing intrathoracic injection versus blood meal infection, and we investigated the influence of temperature. We found that NWE mosquitoes are highly competent for both WNV lineages, with transmission rates up to 25%. Compared to NA mosquitoes, transmission rates for lineage 2 WNV were significantly elevated in NWE mosquitoes due to better virus dissemination from the midgut and a shorter extrinsic incubation time. WNV infection rates further increased with temperature increase. Conclusions/Significance Our study provides experimental evidence to indicate markedly different risk levels between both continents for lineage 2 WNV transmission and suggests a degree of genotype-genotype specificity in the interaction between virus and vector. Our experiments with varying temperatures explain the current localized WNV activity in southern Europe, yet imply further epidemic spread throughout NWE during periods with favourable climatic conditions. This emphasizes the need for intensified surveillance of virus activity in current WNV disease-free regions and warrants increased awareness in clinics throughout Europe., Author Summary West Nile virus (WNV) is on the rise in Europe, with increasing numbers of human cases of neurological disease and death since 2010. However, it is currently unknown whether or not WNV will continue to spread to north-western Europe (NWE), in a fashion similar to the WNV epidemic sweep in the United States (1999–2004). The presence of competent mosquitoes is a strict requirement for WNV transmission, but no laboratory studies have been conducted with the new European lineage 2 WNV outbreak strain. Our study is the first to investigate transmissibility in NWE Culex pipiens for lineage 2 WNV in a systematic, direct comparison with North American Culex pipiens and with the lineage 1 WNV strain. We demonstrate that European mosquitoes are highly competent for both WNV lineages, which underscores the epidemic potential of WNV in Europe. However, the transmission rate for lineage 2 WNV was significantly lower in North American mosquitoes, which indicates different risk levels between both continents for lineage 2 but not lineage 1 WNV. Based on our result, we propose that WNV surveillance in mosquitoes and birds must be intensified in Europe to allow early detection, timely intervention strategies and prevent outbreaks of WNV neurological disease.

International audience; Climate change and air pollution are critical environmental issues both in the here and now and for the coming decades. A recent OECD report found that unless action is taken, air pollution will be the largest environmental cause of premature death worldwide by 2050. Already, air pollution levels in Asia are far above acceptable levels for human health, and even in Europe, the vast majority of the urban population was exposed to air pollution concentrations exceeding the EU daily limit values, and especially the stricter WHO air quality guidelines in the past decade. The most recent synthesis of climate change research as presented in the fifth IPCC Assessment Report (AR5) states that the warming of the climate system is unequivocal, recognizing the dominant cause as human influence, and providing evidence for a 43% higher total (from 1750 to the present) anthropogenic radiative forcing (RF) than was reported in 2005 from the previous assessment report.

Design: Meta-analysis of population-based, cross-sectional studies from the European Eye Epidemiology (E3 ) Consortium. Participants: The E3 Consortium is a collaborative network of epidemiological studies of common eye diseases in adults across Europe. Refractive data were available for 61 946 participants from 15 population-based studies performed between 1990 and 2013; participants had a range of median ages from 44 to 78 years. Methods: Noncycloplegic refraction, year of birth, and highest educational level achieved were obtained for all participants. Myopia was defined as a mean spherical equivalent 0.75 diopters. A random-effects metaanalysis of age-specific myopia prevalence was performed, with sequential analyses stratified by year of birth and highest level of educational attainment. Main Outcome Measures: Variation in age-specific myopia prevalence for differing years of birth and educational level. Results: There was a significant cohort effect for increasing myopia prevalence across more recent birth decades; age-standardized myopia prevalence increased from 17.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 17.6e18.1) to 23.5% (95% CI, 23.2e23.7) in those born between 1910 and 1939 compared with 1940 and 1979 (P ¼ 0.03). Education was significantly associated with myopia; for those completing primary, secondary, and higher education, the age-standardized prevalences were 25.4% (CI, 25.0e25.8), 29.1% (CI, 28.8e29.5), and 36.6% (CI, 36.1e37.2), respectively. Although more recent birth cohorts were more educated, this did not fully explain the cohort effect. Compared with the reference risk of participants born in the 1920s with only primary education, higher education or being born in the 1960s doubled the myopia prevalence ratioe2.43 (CI, 1.26e4.17) and 2.62 (CI, 1.31e5.00), respectivelydwhereas individuals born in the 1960s and completing higher education had approximately 4 times the reference risk: a prevalence ratio of 3.76 (CI, 2.21e6.57). Conclusions: Myopia is becoming more common in Europe; although education levels have increased and are associated with myopia, higher education seems to be an additive rather than explanatory factor. Increasing levels of myopia carry significant clinical and economic implications, with more people at risk of the sightthreatening complications associated with high myopia.

International audience; From the perspective of ecology of zoonotic pathogens, the role of the Old World rats of the genus Rattus is exceptional. The review analyzes specific characteristics of rats that contribute to their important role in hosting pathogens, such as host-pathogen relations and rates of rat-borne infections, taxonomy, ecology, and essential factors. Specifically the review addresses recent taxonomic revisions within the genus Rattus that resulted from applications of new genetic tools in understanding relationships between the Old World rats and the infectious agents that they carry. Among the numerous species within the genus Rattus, only three species-the Norway rat (R. norvegicus), the black or roof rat (R. rattus), and the Asian black rat (R. tanezumi)-have colonized urban ecosystems globally for a historically long period of time. The fourth invasive species, R. exulans, is limited to tropical Asia-Pacific areas. One of the points highlighted in this review is the necessity to discriminate the roles played by rats as pathogen reservoirs within the land of their original diversification and in regions where only one or few rat species were introduced during the recent human history.

Taking the case of community development corporations (CDCs) in the city of Boston in the United States, this dissertation questions the construction of a structured professional territory in the social and physical space of the community. These CDCs operating in poor neighborhoods embody the evolution of the community development field and the professionalization of committed organizations in the field of housing and in multiple economic and social activities. In this context, this thesis aims to identify the community space as a network of actors and a set of spatial practices. After explaining its institutionalization by the state and a group of actors, this dissertation proposes to study the organizational structure of the CDCs as the result of a combination of real estate activities and a social movement. Examined from its emergence during the sixties to the economy and financial crisis of 2007-2011, this analysis is based on the methods of social network analysis and an ethnographic exploration of professional identifies shaped by the commitment and movement of individuals in the space of the community. Situations of collective affirmation of the existence of CDCs illustrate this territorial extension of the practices and the tensions it has on the players who take part of it. Finally, the identification of this professional territory is viewed through the experience of the economic crisis and housing mortgages generating relationships between actors and in which the community becomes both a space for change and adaptation to face an unstable situation., En prenant le cas des sociétés de développement communautaire (CDCs) dans la ville de Boston aux Etats-Unis, cette thèse interroge la construction d'un territoire professionnel structuré dans l'espace social et physique qu'est la community. Ces organisations inscrites dans des quartiers populaires incarnent l'évolution des pratiques du développement communautaire et la professionnalisation d'un mouvement associatif engagé dans le domaine du logement et dans de multiples activités économiques et sociales. Pour cela, cette thèse entend identifier cet espace qu'est la community comme un réseau d'acteurs et un ensemble de pratiques spatialisées. Après en avoir saisi son institutionnalisation par l'Etat et un ensemble d'acteurs, la thèse propose d'étudier la structure organisationnelle de la CDC comme la résultante d'une action dans le domaine immobilier et d'un mouvement social. Examinée à partir de son émergence durant les années soixante jusqu'à la crise économique et financière de 2007-2011 cette analyse se base sur des méthodes d'analyse de réseaux sociaux et une exploration ethnographique des identités professionnelles façonnées par l'engagement individuel dans l'espace de la community. Des situations d'affirmation collective d'existence des CDCs illustrent cette extension territoriale des pratiques et les tensions qu'elle exerce sur les acteurs qui y prennent part. Enfin, l'identification de ce territoire professionnel est observée à travers l'expérience de la crise économique et des crédits immobiliers au cours de laquelle la community devient à la fois un espace propice au changement et un espace d'adaptation face à une situation instable.

Future climate change is expected to affect wheat yields. However, it is uncertain if the overall change in climate will result in wheat yield increases or decreases. This is due to the opposing effects of temperature, precipitation, and CO2 concentration on wheat yields. In this study, a meta-analysis of simulated yield change was conducted to identify the levels of temperature, precipitation and CO2 concentration that result in increasing or decreasing wheat yields. With data from 90 studies using computer modeling, we found that more than 50% of the simulated relative yield change resulted in yield losses when mean temperature change is higher than 2.3 degrees C, or mean precipitation change is null or less, or when CO2 concentration is lower than 395 ppm. A statistical model relating relative yield change to the three considered climatic variables was used to explore a large range of climate change scenarios. Results showed that, in average, the effects of high CO2 concentrations (>640 ppm) outweighed the effects of increasing temperature (up to +2 degrees C) and moderate declines in precipitation (up to 20%), leading to increasing yields. However, these results varied greatly from site to site, likely due to differences in topography, soils and farming practices. Human intoxication or infection due to bacterial food contamination constitutes an economic challenge and a public health problem. Information on the in situ distribution and expression of pathogens responsible for this risk is to date lacking, largely because of technical bottlenecks in detecting signals from minority bacterial populations within a complex microbial and physicochemical ecosystem. We simulated the contamination of a real high-risk cheese with a natural food isolate of Staphylococcus aureus , an enterotoxin-producing pathogen responsible for food poisoning. To overcome the problem of a detection limit in a solid matrix, we chose to work with a fluorescent reporter (superfolder green fluorescent protein) that would allow spatiotemporal monitoring of S. aureus populations and targeted gene expression. The combination of complementary techniques revealed that S. aureus localizes preferentially on the cheese surface during ripening. Immunochemistry and confocal laser scanning microscopy enabled us to visualize, in a single image, dairy bacteria and pathogen populations, virulence gene expression, and the toxin produced. This procedure is readily applicable to other genes of interest, other bacteria, and different types of food matrices.

Purpose – Food products developed using genetically modified (GM) animals may soon be introduced in Europe and beyond. Their successful commercialisation depends on consumer acceptance, and so it is timely to review the existing literature in this respect. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A systematic review identified 42 English language peer reviewed papers assessing public opinion of GM animals associated with food production. Thematic analysis was applied to the results to identify and explain consumer attitudes. Findings – Publication peaked in 2004, and declined thereafter. European consumers were less accepting of GM animal technology than the US and Asian consumers, although the latter reported more ethical concern. Risk and benefit perceptions, ethical concerns (e.g. related to animal welfare) may explain negative consumer attitudes towards animals in food production. Research limitations/implications – There is a lack of data on consumer attitudes to GM animals applied to food production, in particular in relation to consumers in emerging economies and developing countries. This is problematic as applications of GM animal products are about to enter the market. Practical implications – There is a need to track changes in public opinion as GM food production animals are further developed. The introduction and commercialisation of applications with specific characteristics may further shape consumer attitudes. Social implications – Methods need to be developed to involve consumers and other stakeholders in shaping future applications of agri-food applications of GM animals. Originality/value – The review collates existing quantitative and qualitative knowledge regarding the drivers of consumer attitudes towards GM animals used in food production using systematic review methodology.

Background The need for valid and reproducible questionnaires to routinely assess the physical activity level of patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is of particular concern in clinical settings. Aims of this study were to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the physical activity scale for the elderly (PASE) questionnaire in TKA patients, with a particular view on gender differences. Methods A total of 50 elderly patients (25 women and 25 men aged 70 ± 6 years) following primary unilateral TKA were recruited. The reproducibility was evaluated by administering the PASE questionnaire during two occasions separated by 7 days. The construct (criterion) validity was investigated by comparing the physical activity level reported by patients in the PASE questionnaire to that measured by accelerometry. Reproducibility was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC3,1) for reliability and standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest detectable change (SDC) for agreement, while validity was investigated with Pearson correlation coefficients. Results Reliability of the PASE total score was acceptable for men (ICC = 0.77) but not for women (ICC = 0.58). Its agreement was low for both men and women, as witnessed by high SEM (32% and 35%, respectively) and SDC (89% and 97%, respectively). Construct validity of the PASE total score was low in both men (r = 0.45) and women (r = 0.06). Conclusions The PASE questionnaire has several validity and reproducibility shortcomings, therefore its use is not recommended for the assessment of physical activity level in patients after TKA, particularly in women., BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 15, ISSN:1471-2474

In puppies, degradation of feces quality is associated with a reduced daily weight gain and an increased risk of death. Prevention of diarrhea in puppies requires a global approach encompassing enteropathogens, environment and management practices especially when housed in groups. The purpose of this study was to determine prevalence of enteropathogens in puppies in breeding kennels and to identify risk factors of diarrhea. Two hundred and sixty six puppies (between 5 and 14 weeks of age) from 29 French breeding kennels were included. For each kennel, data about environment, management of the kennel and puppies' characteristics (age, sex and breed) were collected. For each puppy, fecal consistency and fecal excretion of enteropathogens (viruses and parasites) was evaluated. At least one enteropathogen was identified in 77.1% of puppies and 24.8% of puppies presented abnormal feces. The main risk factor of weaning diarrhea was fecal excretion of canine parvovirus type 2 (odds ratio = 5; confidence interval 95%: 1.7-14.7). A targeted sanitary and medical prophylaxis against canine parvovirus type 2 should be implemented to decrease risk of weaning diarrhea.

The design and validation of a combined targeted selective treatment (C-TST) scheme to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of goats under tropical conditions is described. A survey performed on 1585 goats (older than 4 months) from 103 smallholder subsistence farms from tropical México (Yucatán), showed the classical over-dispersion distribution of the GIN fecal egg excretions (FEC) indicating that most goats had a low excretion of eggs and only a few had high FEC. A second stage of the survey (20 farms) tested the association between FAMACHA© and packed cell volume (PCV) (n= 638) as well as FAMACHA© and FEC (n= 627). The survey showed that FAMACHA© was a good tool to identify anemic animals but no association was found with their FEC. As a result, we proposed to combine FAMACHA© with body condition score (BCS) to identify adult animals at risk of high GIN infections. The FEC was used to identify goats needing anthelmintic (AH) treatment. The C-TST scheme was surveyed in a goat farm (mean 138 adult goats/year) in Yucatán for 6 years (8292 events recorded). In that period, the mean number of goats left without AH treatment was 57.4%. Meanwhile, nearly 30% of the goats needed only one treatment per year. Less than 15% of the goats required 2 or more treatments per year. Besides, the AH doses were distributed amongst small number of animals every month throughout the year. Thus, under the browsing conditions of Yucatán, México, the combination of BCS and FAMACHA© can be used as a screening procedure to identify animals at risk of severe GIN infections and the FEC help to reduce the number of goats treated per year with no apparent negative consequences on the goats. Se describe el diseño y la validación de un esquema de tratamiento selectivo combinado y dirigido (C-TST) para controlar los nematodos gastrointestinales (GIN) de las cabras en condiciones tropicales. Una encuesta realizada en 1585 cabras (de más de 4 meses de edad) de 103 pequeñas granjas de subsistencia de México tropical (Yucatán), mostró la clásica distribución de sobredispersión de las excreciones de huevos fecales (FEC) de los GIN, lo que indica que la mayoría de las cabras tenían una baja excreción de huevos y sólo unas pocas tenían una alta FEC. En una segunda etapa de la encuesta (20 granjas) se probó la asociación entre FAMACHA© y el volumen de células envasadas (PCV) (n= 638), así como entre FAMACHA© y FEC (n= 627). La encuesta demostró que FAMACHA© era una buena herramienta para identificar animales anémicos pero no se encontró ninguna asociación con su FEC. Como resultado, propusimos combinar FAMACHA© con la puntuación de condición corporal (BCS) para identificar animales adultos con riesgo de infecciones de alta GIN. El FEC se usó para identificar cabras que necesitaban un tratamiento antihelmíntico (AH). El esquema C-TST se estudió en una granja de cabras (media de 138 cabras adultas/año) en Yucatán durante 6 años (8292 eventos registrados). En ese período, la media de cabras que quedaron sin tratamiento AH fue del 57,4%. Mientras tanto, casi el 30% de las cabras necesitaron sólo un tratamiento por año. Menos del 15% de las cabras necesitaron 2 o más tratamientos por año. Además, las dosis de AH se distribuyeron entre un pequeño número de animales cada mes a lo largo del año. Así, bajo las condiciones de navegación de Yucatán, México, la combinación de BCS y FAMACHA© puede ser utilizada como un procedimiento de detección para identificar animales en riesgo de infecciones severas de GIN y la FEC ayuda a reducir el número de cabras tratadas por año sin consecuencias negativas aparentes en las cabras. International audience; Le projet de Broadacre City, tel que conçu par Frank Lloyd Wright, s'inscrit dans la lignée des propositions visionnaires allouant à l'architecture une mission fondamentale dans l'édification d'un nouveau monde politique et social. Les références revendiquées par Wright - et les citations dans ce projet sont nombreuses -, renvoient aux Pères Fondateurs de l'Union, aux grands penseurs du XIXe siècle - transcendentalistes notamment - et à la culture progressiste du Middle-West. Une des plus importantes d'entre-elles, car fondatrice, est celle du projet inégalé de Thomas Jefferson du U.S Land Survey : vaste grille orthogonale gérant encore aujourd'hui plus de 75% du territoire des Etats-Unis, conçue par Jefferson pour ancrer la démocratie sur le sol de l'Union. La démocratie, pour Jefferson, était en effet indissociable de la constitution d'une société rurale composée de petits agriculteurs libres et indépendants, organisée - sur le sol mais aussi politiquement - à l'aide de la grille des townships et sections qui permettrait, par ailleurs, de lutter contre l'établissement de grandes villes - cities - industrieuses et marchandes, considérées comme de véritables " plaies sur le corps politique ". Avec Broadacre City, Wright inscrit sa pensée de l'architecture dans le grand récit de l'histoire des Etats-Unis, poursuivant l'idéal démocratique de Jefferson. Tel est le sens d'Usonia. Wright introduit alors une nouvelle échelle de conception qui participera à enrichir sa définition de l'architecture organique, i.e. démocratique. Son architecture n'est plus pensée en référence à la ville, il dépasse les dimensions de la région - auxquelles s'attachaient alors les militants du regional planning -, pour se donner à concevoir la vaste étendue du territoire d'Usonia. De la même façon que Wright avait compris, à l'articulation des XIXe et XXe siècles, la nécessité de redéfinir à l'aide des principes de l'architecture organique l'espace domestique de la maison - en " explosant " notamment la " boîte " qu'elle avait jusqu'alors constitué -, il commencera à saisir, dès les années 1920, l'urgence de procéder à un travail de recherche similaire, à l'échelle de la ville cette fois-ci. Il s'agira dès lors de redéfinir l'espace de la community de sorte à concevoir un environnement harmonieux pour ces familles usoniennes ayant définitivement adhéré aux principes de la démocratie, et vivant en parfait accord avec la nature. Tel était l'objectif de Broadacre City : exposer les principes organiques d'un nouveau mode d'habiter allant au-delà des cloisonnements artificiels instaurés entre mondes urbain et rural, et permettant de lutter contre la spéculation foncière, le pouvoir de l'argent, et ce " cancer " de la grande ville. Une grande ville désormais atomisée, n'ayant plus aucune raison d'être, toute nécessité de concentration des hommes et des activités en des points spécifiques du territoire ayant disparu du fait de la disponibilité de ces nouveaux moyens de transport, de communication, et d'approvisionnement en énergie, enfin utilisés à bon escient.
