International audience; The problem of sandbar migration on the storm timescale is revisited with a 3D waveresolving hydro-sedimentary model. The model accurately simulates the successive offshore and onshore bar migration observed in a large-scale flume experiment (LIP11D) in response to wave forcing representing storm and post-storm (recovery) conditions. The diagnosis of sand transport and the analysis of a composite asymmetric wave cycle reveal the migration mechanisms in each phase. In all cases, sediment resuspension is dominated by breakinginduced turbulence, while net sediment transport and bed profile evolution are primarily the result of undertow distribution across the sandbar, rather than a trade-off between onshore and offshore fluxes. In the erosion phase, a strong undertow carries the mobilized sediment seaward of the bar crest. In the accretion phase, the sandbar becomes the breaking point to more moderate waves and the undertow is limited to the lee-side of the bar, causing an counterflow migration of the bar crest. The contribution of wave-related onshore fluxes is significant in this case-although secondary in magnitude-and coincide with higher mobilization and currents during the wave crest period. We conclude that computationally efficient 3D wave-resolving models (including morphological acceleration) can be used to improve our understanding of nearshore morphodynamic problems in realistic applications.

This thesis presents a multi-scale investigation of the role of waves, sea level and human settlements to understand long-term coastal evolution of the 400-km long sandy Bight of Benin coast (Gulf of Guinea, West Africa). Coastal morphology and its ocean drivers are monitored using local shore-based video camera and regional satellite remote sensing. New video developpements show the potential of video camera in sensing daily beach profile, waves and sea level at the coast. The results reveal the dominant influence of waves on shoreline variability at the event (daily) and seasonal scales, whereas at the intraseasonal and interannual scales, the shoreline is dominantly modulated by sea level changes. Over longer periods (decades), anthropogenic influence, such as deep water harbours and the reduction of sediment river (such as Volta and Niger) discharge due to dams significantly alter sediment transport, creating several erosion zones. These observations over the long term are satisfactorily reproduced by the implemented shoreline model, specially in the vicinity of the harbors, and allows to estimate, for example, the amount of sediment nourishment necessary to limit erosion downstream of Lagos harbor. (IF 4.12 [2018]; Q1); International audience; With high anthropogenic pressure and the effects of climate change (e.g., sea level rise) on coastal regions, there is a greater need for accurate and up-to-date information about the topography of these systems. Reliable topography and bathymetry information are fundamental parameters for modelling the morpho-hydrodynamics of coastal areas, for flood forecasting, and for coastal management. Traditional methods such as ground, ship-borne, and airborne surveys suffer from limited spatial coverage and temporal sampling due to logistical constraints and high costs which limit their ability to provide the needed information. The recent advancements of spaceborne remote sensing techniques, along with their ability to acquire data over large spatial areas and to provide high frequency temporal monitoring, has made them very attractive for topography and bathymetry mapping. In this review, we present an overview of the current state of spaceborne-based remote sensing techniques used to estimate the topography and bathymetry of beaches, intertidal, and nearshore areas. We also provide some insights about the potential of these techniques when using data provided by new and future satellite missions.

Indeed, sandy systems contain unique biodiversity and supply nursery and foraging areas for numerous commercially important marine species, such as flatfish. However, these systems are threatened by increasing anthropogenic pressure. Green tides (GT, i.e. accumulations of green opportunistic macroalgae) are a major human-induced threat to marine ecosystems, from inshore to nearshore. This eutrophication process greatly affects both benthic invertebrate communities and flatfish communities, within sheltered and non- or microtidal systems. However, the responses of dynamic open macrotidal sandy systems to eutrophication in the form of macroalgal mats are not yet fully understood. In particular, understanding the effects of GT on two connected biological compartments (infauna and flatfish) within two connected habitats (intertidal and subtidal) is crucial. Here, we set out to assess the influence of several environmental variables, including Ulva biomass, on the variability in infauna and flatfish communities in both the intertidal and the subtidal at four sites impacted or not by GT. In total, 110 biodiversity samples were analysed with classic and novel analytical approaches. Our results demonstrate that the presence of GT specifically impacts intertidal macroinvertebrate communities. However, small effects of GT on subtidal infauna communities, as well as on species-specific flatfish at both intertidal and subtidal, were still detectable. Our findings underline the vulnerability of highly dynamic ecosystems exposed to anthropogenic stress, in particular intertidal sandy shores.

International audience; The influence of cuspate swash dynamics on transient surf zone circulation is investigated using both field observation at the low-tide terraced Grand Popo beach and wave-phase resolving numerical simulations. The ability of the model to describing low-tide terrace beach hydrodynamic is tested, and the model is further applied to investigate the role of wave reflection over a rhythmic swash zone pattern on surf zone wave and current. In the numerical simulations, these mechanisms drive higher surf zone irregularities with beach cusps than for an alongshore-uniform swash zone morphology. Rhythmic swash-based reflection generates a standing wave pattern visible in current and wave fields. The positive feedback of reflection on incoming waves drives occasional strong flash rips occurring with different frequencies than individual waves or groups. The so called breakpoint-swash system is thought to pulse with its own temporal characteristics, which depends on wave forcing but also on surf zone terrace and cuspate morphology.

A direct estimation of longshore currents using in-situ instruments is difficult and costly, and often limited to punctual measurements over short durations. Video remote sensing systems offer an alternative when drifting features, like foam induced by breaking waves or other streaks, are visible. In this paper we describe a method based on the application of the Radon transform on longshore spatio-temporal images. The sinogram from the Radon transform is used to find the angle of the drifting, further converted into current. Our approach is first tested using synthetic fields created using anisotropic Gaussian random currents and waves. Comparison is also made with in-situ currents from the Grand Popo 2014 experiment in Benin (Gulf of Guinea, West Africa). Results show an overall good agreement (O(30%)) in the swash, surf and inner shelf zones while the method offers best skills in the surf zone (17%) where the drifting foam induced by wave breaking is evident. The width of the Radon peak is found to be a good proxy of accuracy. This remote sensing method allows a long term monitoring of the longshore current and its cross-shore structure, which brings new perspectives in quantifying sediment drift variability.

Wave nonlinearities have long been recognised as being among the main drivers of sediment transport in the coastal zone. However, there are still significant errors in the prediction of this transport associated, partially due to inaccurate predictions of the velocity nonlinearities. The infragravity waves, which coexist with the short waves in the coastal zone, are long-period waves (with 20-200 s) associated to the short-wave groups. Their generation, propagation and dissipation mechanisms are already reasonably well understood, but their influence on sediment transport is still very poorly characterised. In order to (i) improve current predictions of velocity nonlinearities and (ii) investigate the role of infragravity waves in sediment transport, new experiments were carried out both in a fixed-bed wave flume and in a light-weight-sediment wave flume. The physical-modelling data set is used in combination with field data and numerical simulations for studying both subjects. Existing parameterizations of velocity nonlinearities account only for the influence of local wave parameters (e.g. wave height, wave length and water depth), which leads to considerable estimation errors, especially of the maximal values of nonlinearity. This work shows that the velocity nonlinearities depend also on non-local wave parameters: (i) offshore wave steepness, (ii) offshore spectral bandwidth and (iii) beach slope. A new parameterization is proposed, which reduces by about 50% the root-mean-square error relatively to former parameterizations. The experimental results in the light-weight-sediment wave flume demonstrate that wave conditions with the same short-wave energy, but different low-frequency modulation, shape different equilibrium beach profiles. The influence of the infragravity waves on the sediment transport is confirmed and depends on two different mechanisms: (i) advection of the short-wave suspended sediment by the infragravity-waves, which is dependent on the infragravity-wave height and phasing with the short-wave groups and (ii) modulation of short-wave nonlinearities by infragravity-wave motion, both directly and indirectly, through water-depth modulation. Changes in the beachface morphology induced by infragravity waves are connected to beach-profile changes in the surf and inner-shoaling zones, highlighting the existent link between the different zones of the cross-shore beach profile., Les non-linéarités des ondes de surface, qui se caractérisent par leur aspect dissymétrique, sont reconnues comme l'un des principaux moteurs du transport de sédiments en zone littorale. Cependant, l'estimation du transport reste imparfaite, en partie du fait d’une description inexacte des non-linéarités de la vitesse de l'écoulement orbital. Les ondes infra-gravitaires, qui coexistent avec les ondes courtes en zone littorale, sont des ondes de longue période (20-200 s) associés aux groupes d'ondes courtes. Les mécanismes de génération, propagation et dissipation de ces ondes sont maintenant relativement bien compris, mais leur effet sur le transport sédimentaire est encore mal connu. Afin (i) d’améliorer les paramétrisations existantes des non-linéarités de vitesse et (ii) d’étudier le rôle des ondes infra-gravitaires dans le transport sédimentaire, de nouvelles expériences ont été réalisées dans deux canaux à houle, l’un avec un fond fixe et l'autre avec un fond mobile constitué de sédiments de faible densité. Les données obtenues avec ces modèles physiques ont été utilisés conjointement à des données de terrain et des simulations numériques pour étudier les deux sujets.}TEXT{}{Les paramétrisations classiques pour les non-linéarités de vitesse prennent seulement en compte l'influence de paramètres locaux (la hauteur de vague, la longueur d'onde et la profondeur d’eau), ce qui entraîne des erreurs importantes dans les estimations, en particulier les valeurs maximales de non-linéarité. Ce travail montre que les non-linéarités de vitesse ont aussi une dépendance avec des paramètres qui ne sont pas locaux: (i) la cambrure de vague et (ii) la largeur de la bande spectrale au large, ainsi que (iii) la pente de la plage. Une nouvelle paramétrisation est proposée, qui réduit d’environ 50% l'erreur sur les résultats obtenus avec les paramétrisations existantes. Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus dans le canal à houle avec un fond mobile montrent que des conditions de vagues avec la même énergie d'ondes courtes, mais avec une modulation basse fréquence différente, modèlent des profils de plage différents. L'influence des ondes infra-gravitaires sur le transport sédimentaire est mis en évidence par deux mécanismes distincts: (i) l’advection par les ondes infra-gravitaires de sédiment mis en suspension par l'action des ondes courtes, qui dépend de la hauteur des ondes infra-gravitaires et de leur phase par rapport aux groupes d'ondes courtes et (ii) les ondes infra-gravitaires modifient les non-linéarités des ondes courtes, que ce soit directement ou indirectement, par modulation de la hauteur de la colonne d'eau. Les variations morphologiques du haut de plage induites par les ondes infra-gravitaires sont associées à des changements du profil de la plage dans les zones de déferlement et de levée, en mettant en évidence le lien entre les différentes régions du profil transversal de la plage.

International audience; Within the coastal systems, the relationships between the coastal accumulations and the nearshore remain rather difficult to understand and define. The needs for knowledge are thus important because their understanding is needed to feed the reflection on the management of the coastal dynamics. This is the case for coastline of the islands of the Glénan Archipelago located in the South of Finistère (France), in particular within the Nature reserve, where observations of the coastal evolutions are realized, at various scales of time and spaces. The diachronic evolutions of the coastline are surveyed on the basis of an analysis of old maps and aerial pictures and also topographical surveys. They are then compared to the morphological modifications and the slow migrations of sandy subtidal dunes. The results show the links of dependence between the neighboring beaches of a same island, also between the accumulations of nearby islands and, finally, between the mobility of the submarine accumulations and the coastal accumulations of the whole archipelago. Within this coastal system, if weather and marine events are at the origin of the fast retreats of the coastline, the slow migrations of the submarine accumulations in the archipelago define alternatively, over longer periods, conditions for the erosion or the accretion of the coastline of the islands. These conditions need to be taken into account partially with the prospect of the management of the coastline evolutions of islands of the archipelago.; Au sein des systèmes littoraux, les relations de dépendance entre les accumulations littorales et leur avant-plage restent souvent délicates à cerner. Les besoins de connaissance demeurent donc importants car leur compréhension est à même d'alimenter la réflexion sur la gestion des évolutions littorales. C'est le cas pour les littoraux des îles de l'archipel des Glénan dans le sud du Finistère, en particulier au sein de la Réserve Naturelle, où des observations des évolutions côtières sont réalisées à différentes échelles de temps et d'espaces. Sur la base d'une analyse de cartes anciennes et de clichés aériens, les évolutions diachroniques du trait de côte de certaines des îles sont retracées. Elles sont mises en relation avec les modifications morphologiques des fonds sédimentaires, en particulier avec les migrations lentes de bancs et de dunes hydrauliques sableux. Les bilans qui en résultent montrent les liens de dépendance entre les plages adjacentes d'une même île, entre les accumulations d'îles voisines et, au final, entre la mobilité des accumulations sous-marines et celle des accumulations littorales de l'ensemble de l'archipel. Au sein de ce système littoral, si des événements météo-marins sont à l'origine de retraits rapides du trait de côte, les migrations lentes des accumulations sous-marines dans l'archipel définissent, sur des périodes plus longues, des conditions favorables à l'érosion ou l’accrétion des rivages. Ce sont là des conditions dont il est nécessaire de tenir compte dans la perspective de la gestion des évolutions des rivages des îles et des îlots de l'archipel.

International audience; Nearshore is an integrated part of the coastal zone, as well as beaches and coastal dunes. However, they remain poorly studied compared to the emerged part of the system, because of the limited access for scientific monitoring. The nearshore of Combrit – Île-Tudy (south Brittany, France), addressed in this paper, is a good example. The first aim of this study is to present a methodology for the interpretation of old bathymetric surveys (supplied by the French naval hydrographic and oceanographic service – SHOM) which considers all the inaccuracies related to this type of data. Then, this method is implemented in order to depict the morphological evolution of the nearshore by comparing the ancient bathymetric surveys (19th and 20th centuries) and the recent ones of the nearshore (2012). Our results indicate different trends of evolution depending upon the period considered: between 1818 and 1903 the nearshore is considerably eroding; between 1903 and 1971 the situation has reversed ; the recent period 1971-2012 is submitted to erosion. These results let us to consider the origins of such variability and formulate several hypothesis implying natural factors such as wave climate modification, extreme meteorological events and also anthropogenic factors such as sand extraction and polder establishment.; Au sein des systèmes littoraux, les avant-plages font partie intégrante des accumulations littorales, comprenant également les plages et les accumulations de haut de plage. Néanmoins, pour des raisons d’accessibilité limitée pour les observations scientifiques, les avant-plages et leur morphologie restent peu étudiées comparativement à la partie émergée du système. Notre travail s'appuie sur l’étude de l’avant-plage du secteur de Combrit – Île-Tudy (France), dans le sud du Finistère. Les objectifs de cette étude sont dans un premier temps de développer une méthode d’analyse des levés bathymétriques anciens (fournis par le Service Hydrographie et Océanographique de la Marine) en prenant en compte toutes les imprécisions inhérentes à ce type de données. Dans un deuxième temps, il s’agit de mettre en évidence des évolutions morphologiques de l’avant-plage par la comparaison des données anciennes fournies par le Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine (SHOM ; XIXe et XXe siècles) et récentes (2012). La comparaison de Modèles Numériques de Terrain (MNT) permet d’identifier au moins trois tendances d’évolution distinctes entre 1818 et 2012 : une situation d’érosion de l’avant-plage entre 1818 et 1903, suivie d’un exhaussement généralisé entre 1903 et 1971, puis d'un nouvel abaissement des fonds entre 1971 et 2012. À la suite de ces résultats, les causes de ces modifications sont abordées au travers de différentes hypothèses. En effet, plusieurs facteurs sont susceptibles d’avoir une action directe ou indirecte sur la morphologie de l’avant-plage. Parmi ceux-ci, des forçages naturels (modification du régime de houle, impacts des évènements météo-marins majeurs) auxquels s'associent, sans doute, des pressions humaines (extractions de sable et poldérisation, notamment).

International audience; In nearshore studies, there is an increasing interest for describing wave-by-wave dynamics. Most existing methods compute bulk parameters for celerity and the separation of incoming and outgoing waves. In this paper we address the use of the Radon Transform for studying wave dynamics. The Radon Transform is a projection of a bidimensional field (e.g. spatiotemporal wave signal) into polar coordinates which can be back projected at given angles. The method is applied to laboratory low-sloping beach and non-linear waves GLOBEX dataset. The separation of incoming from outgoing long waves using Radon is tested and compared to the method described in Guza et al., (1984). Components are retrieved, even at standing long wave nodes. Individual short wave celerity derived from Radon is found in agreement with celerity derived from tracked individual crest.

This work aimed at providing a better understanding of nearshore circulation and dispersion processes under the effect of waves. An operational numerical modeling tool was developed, based on the spectral wave model WAVEWATCH III and the 3-D hydrodynamical model MOHID Water. The MOHID implementation was extended to the glm2z approach for 3-D wave-current interactions. Theoretical developments leading to glm2z equations are gathered and detailed in the present work. The numerical implementation of glm2z equations is described. The model is validated in academic cases, in which the obtained solution is shown to be consistent with that provided by reference numerical models. Both numerical modeling and in situ measurements are then used to study two nearshore environments, located on the French South Atlantic coast. These complex areas combine a significant effect of waves on dynamics and remarkable salinity stratification. Comparison of 3-D model results with field data are encouraging and offers interesting insights for current and salinity profile variability. Dynamics of a semi-enclosed estuarine bay is first studied. Modeling results suggest that waves may have a significant impact on river plumes, leading to a reduction of the global bay flushing during a raining event. The second study site allows the investigation of the intense circulation generated by waves over a ridge and runnel system, and the dispersion of freshwaters introduced in the surfzone by a small river. Finally, this work provides a 3-D numerical modeling tool for the study of the circulation and related transports under the effects of nearshore forcings., Ce travail de thèse apporte des éléments en vue d'une meilleure compréhension de la circulation et des processus de dispersion associés aux vagues à proximité des plages. Un outil de modélisation numérique opérationnelle a été développé, fondé sur le modèle spectral d'état de mer WAVEWATCH III et le modèle hydrodynamique 3-D MOHID Water. Le code MOHID a été étendu à l'approche glm2z pour la représentation des interactions 3-D vagues-courant. Les développements théoriques permettant l'obtention des équations glm2z sont rassemblés et détaillés dans ce travail. L'implémentation de ces équations au sein de l'outil de modélisation est exposée. L'outil construit est validé sur deux cas académiques, où est mise en évidence sa capacité à reproduire la solution fournie par des modèles numériques de référence. Par la suite, la modélisation est combinée à des observations in situ pour étudier deux sites de la côte Sud Atlantique française. Ces sites correspondent à des configurations littorales complexes, associant une influence significative des vagues et une stratification haline notable de la colonne d'eau. La confrontation des résultats du calcul 3-D aux mesures fournit des résultats encourageants et apporte des éléments utiles pour la compréhension de la variabilité des courants et des profils de salinité observés. Une baie estuarienne semi-fermée est tout d'abord étudiée. La modélisation y suggère un effet significatif des vagues sur la dispersion des panaches estuariens, susceptible d'impacter la vidange globale de la baie à l'échelle d'un épisode de précipitations. Le second site d'application permet l'étude de la circulation intense induite par les vagues au-dessus d'un système barre/chenal, ainsi que la dispersion des eaux douces introduites par une rivière dans la zone de déferlement. Ce travail fournit finalement un outil de modélisation 3-D pour l'étude de la circulation et du transport sous l'effet de l'ensemble des forçages littoraux.

This work aimed at providing a better understanding of nearshore circulation and dispersion processes under the effect of waves. An operational numerical modeling tool was developed, based on the spectral wave model WAVEWATCH III R and the 3-D hydrodynamical model MOHID Water. The MOHID implementation was extended to the glm2z approach for 3-D wave-current interactions. Theoretical developments leading to glm2z equations are gathered and detailed in the present work. The numerical implementation of glm2z equations is described. The model is validated in academic cases, in which the obtained solution is shown to be consistent with that provided by reference numerical models. Both numerical modeling and in situ measurements are then used to study two nearshore environments, located on the French South Atlantic coast. These complex areas combine a significant effect of waves on dynamics and remarkable salinity stratification. Comparison of 3-D model results with field data are encouraging and offers interesting insights for current and salinity profile variability. Dynamics of a semi-enclosed estuarine bay is first studied. Modeling results suggest that waves may have a significant impact on river plumes, leading to a reduction of the global bay flushing during a raining event. The second study site allows the investigation of the intense circulation generated by waves over a ridge and runnel system, and the dispersion of reshwaters introduced in the surfzone by a small river. Finally, this work provides a 3-D numerical modeling tool for the study of the circulation and related transports under the effects of nearshore forcings., Ce travail de thèse apporte des éléments en vue d’une meilleure compréhension de la circulation et des processus de dispersion associés aux vagues à proximité des plages. Un outil de modélisation numérique opérationnelle a été développé, fondé sur le modèle spectral d’état de mer WAVEWATCH III R et le modèle hydrodynamique 3-D MOHID Water. Le code MOHID a été étendu à l’approche glm2z pour la représentation des interactions 3-D vagues-courant. Les développements théoriques permettant l’obtention des équations glm2z sont rassemblés et détaillés dans ce travail. L’implémentation de ces équations au sein de l’outil de modélisation est exposée. L’outil construit est validé sur deux cas académiques, où est mise en évidence sa capacité à reproduire la solution fournie par des modèles numériques de référence. Par la suite, la modélisation est combinée à des observations in situ pour étudier deux sites de la côte Sud Atlantique française. Ces sites correspondent à des configurations littorales complexes, associant une influence significative des vagues et une stratification haline notable de la colonne d’eau. La confrontation des résultats du calcul 3-D aux mesures fournit des résultats encourageants et apporte des éléments utiles pour la compréhension de la variabilité des courants et des profils de salinité observés. Une baie estuarienne semi-fermée est tout d’abord étudiée. La modélisation y suggère un effet significatif des vagues sur la dispersion des panaches estuariens, susceptible d’impacter la vidange globale de la baie à l’échelle d’un épisode de précipitations. Le second site d’application permet l’étude de la circulation intense induite par les vagues au-dessus d’un système barre/chenal, ainsi que la dispersion des eaux douces introduites par une rivière dans la zone de déferlement. Ce travail fournit finalement un outil de modélisation 3-D pour l’étude de la circulation et du transport sous l’effet de l’ensemble des forçages littoraux.
