International audience; The Southern Ocean provides one of the largest environmental gradients onEarth that lacks geographical barriers, and small but highly mobile petrelsliving theremay offer finemodels of evolution of diversity along environmentalgradients. Using geolocation devices,we investigated thewinter distribution ofclosely related petrel species breeding sympatrically in the southern IndianOcean, and applied ecological niche models to compare environmental conditionsin the habitat used. We show that thin-billed prions (Pachyptilabelcheri), Antarctic prions (Pachyptila desolata) and blue petrels (Halobaenacaerulea) from the Kerguelen archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean segregatelatitudinally, sea surface temperature being the most important variableseparating the distribution of the species. Antarctic prions spent the winternorth of the Polar Front in temperate waters, whereas blue petrels werefound south of the Polar Front in Antarcticwaters. Thin-billed prions preferredintermediate latitudes and temperatures. Stable isotope values of feathersreflected this near complete niche separation across an ecological gradientthat spans large scales, and suggest evolutionary isolation by environment.In pelagic seabirds that exploit large areas of ocean, spatial niche partitioningmay not only facilitate coexistence among ecologically similar species, butmay also have driven their evolution in the absence of geographical barriers.1. IntroductionIndividualmovements and behaviour are inextricably linked to habitat characteristics,which determine the distribution and availability of trophic resources.In the oceans, the more productive areas are often in cold-water or upwellingregions where higher nutrient availability sustains productive foodwebs. Seabirdspecies often breed in large communities and target productive areas within theirforaging range, leading to intense competition for resources [1] and reduced foragingefficiency [2]. Seabirds can avoid interspecific competition at least partiallyby ecological segregation in foraging areas [3,4], diving depths [4,5] or dietchoice [6,7]. However, little is known from pelagic birds during the non-breedingseason, when seabirds forage over much larger spatial scales. Among the mostabundant small seabirds worldwide, prions (Pachyptila spp.) and closely relatedblue petrels (Halobaena caerulea) inhabit the open waters of the Southern Ocean.As these small petrels are very similar in size, foraging techniques and dietduring the breeding season, it has been suggested that they may be suitablemodel species in the context of niche partitioning and community assemblyrules [8,9]. In the southwest Atlantic Ocean, thin-billed and Antarctic prionshad divergent patterns of migration, resulting in nearly complete spatial segregation(0–5% overlap by month, [10]). The study of communities and ecological segregation is of primary importance, especially for its contribution to the field of evolutionary biology and its applications to conservation. The present study aims to assess ecological segregation of tropical delphinids of the island of Mayotte (Mozambique Channel, SW Indian Ocean) at two scales: interspecies and intra-species level. Around Mayotte, a diverse community of delphinids can be found within a restricted range. Thirteen species have been recorded, among which five species regularly occur: the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus), the spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), the pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), the melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra) and the Fraser’s dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei). In species living in sympatry, segregation mechanisms should be observed along the three main dimensions of the ecological niche: habitat, resource and time. In inter-specific comparisons, analyses of habitat defined by physiographic variables at sighting locations, resource use expressed as carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures, and activity budgets revealed that each species occupies its own ecological niche. At the same time, sibling species form mixed-species associations that place them in situation of apparent competition for habitats. It has been shown that these mixed-species associations, especially among dolphins of the genus Stenella, do associate for anti-predator vigilance rather than for trophic benefits. Finally, the last approach of this study aims to investigate fine scale population structure and intra-species segregation in the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, the main delphinid occurring in the inner lagoon. The combination of approaches over temporal scales: from the genetic population structure to the community characteristics at individual life-scale (home range), showed that a single panmictic group of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins was segmented into communities (defined by a common home range). At least two bottlenose dolphin communities were found, using a common home range and within which genetically unrelated individuals are preferentially associated. The whole study underlines that ecological segregation can be observed inter- and intra-specifically in delphinids, and this segregation can only be assessed by using multi-scale and multidisciplinary approaches.; L’étude de l’écologie des communautés et de la ségrégation écologique revêt une importance particulière, notamment pour ses apports en biologie évolutive mais aussi pour ses applications dans le domaine de la conservation. A l’échelle interspécifique, les analyses de l’habitat défini par les caractères physiographiques associés à chaque observation, de l’utilisation des ressources exprimée par les isotopes stables du carbone et de l’azote et des budgets d’activités montrent que les delphinidés occupent des niches écologiques distinctes. Parallèlement, certaines espèces jumelles peuvent constituer des associations poly-spécifiques, les mettant apparemment en situation de compétition pour les ressources et les habitats. Il a été montré que ces associations, notamment chez les delphinidés du genre Stenella, n’avaient pas de signification trophique, mais constituaient plutôt une stratégie de vigilance contre les prédateurs. Le dernier volet de l’étude s’intéresse à la ségrégation intra-spécifique et à la structure de population à fine échelle, notamment chez le grand dauphin de l’Indo-Pacifique, la principale espèce de delphinidé à vivre dans les eaux intérieures du lagon. La combinaison d’approches dont les échelles sont emboitées : de l’échelle évolutive populationnelle (structure génétique) à l’échelle de la vie de l’individu (domaine vital), a permis de démontrer que l’unique groupe panmictique de Mayotte se segmentait en communautés (définies par des ensembles d’individus ayant un domaine vital commun). Au moins deux communautés ont été identifiées, utilisant des domaines distincts, formant des groupes sociaux stables mais non constitués d’individus apparentés. L’ensemble de l’étude montre que la ségrégation écologique s’observe aux échelles inter- et intra-spécifiques chez les delphinidés, et que celle-ci ne peut être mis en évidence que par des approches multi-échelles et transdisciplinaires.

Populations of the ‘‘continental'' Great Cormorant P. c. sinensis have expanded from north-eastern Europe towards the western part of the range of the ‘‘marine'' P. c. carbo breeding in the United Kingdom and France. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis of ecological segregation between subspecies by analysing the structuring of the European populations. Sequencing the mtDNA of 231 birds belonging to 20 colonies revealed 38 haplotypes based on 25 polymorphic sites (5.76% sequence divergence). P. c. sinensis (‘‘S'') was well confirmed, but usual P. c. carbo formed two coastal populations, the real P. c. carbo ‘‘C'' mainly in the western part of the range (United Kingdom, coastal France), and also in Norway and Sardinia, and ‘‘N'', branched to the Japanese Cormorant P. capillatus and probably isolated by glaciations, mainly present in the Nordic range (Norway, but also on the coasts from Sweden to Brittany), we named P. c. norvegicus. In a variable position in the trees but close to C is a group of undetermined origin haplotypes, named U, also present in both traditional ranges. The new tree-nesting colonies in Brittany are clearly a mixture of S and the two clades C and N previously described as P. c. carbo, with a decreasing proportion of C+N between 1993 (67%), 1996 (60%) and 2002 (33%) for the pioneering Grand-Lieu colony. These results confirmed the current introgression of continental populations in the western range, with probable hybridization. Although the subspecies can switch habitats locally due to social behaviour and migrations, the ecological segregation between the two usual subspecies appears to be largely confirmed in Europe.

Afin de comprendre l'organisation des communautés de chauves-souris ainsi que la coexistence de nombreuses espèces sympatriques, il est essentiel de déterminer comment les espèces utilisent et se partagent les ressources. Dans un premier temps, nous décrivons un peuplement de chauves-souris en forêt primaire de Guyane Française. Les facteurs locaux tels que la présence de gîtes particuliers comme les grottes, ou l'absence de perturbation anthropique ont une influence sur la structure et la composition des communautés. Au cours de cette étude, nous nous sommes concentrés sur les trois espèces les plus communes de chaque guilde végétarienne (frugivores de sous-bois, frugivores de canopée et nectarivores). Leur coexistence est possible grâce au partage des ressources alimentaires, de l'espace et/ou du temps. Au sein d'une même guilde, les plus petites espèces ont une bonne manoeuvrabilité et semblent occuper davantage les espaces fermés, moins attractifs pour leurs compétiteurs. Elles ont aussi un domaine vital plus petit que les grandes espèces. De même, le décalage des rythmes d'activités que nous avons observé, peut réduire la compétition entre les chauves-souris frugivores en diminuant les interférences directes lors de l'alimentation. En plus d'un intérêt pour l'écologie des communautés, cette étude décrivant des peuplements de chiroptères dans une forêt primaire intacte, peut servir de référence en biologie de conservation.
