International audience; The Coudoulous I (Lot, France) sequence has yielded abundant fossil associations dated to the end of the Middle Pleistocene. The total sample consists of 102 taxa corresponding to 75 species of mammals (53 small and 22 large mammals), 11 species of amphibians and 16 species of reptiles distributed in five faunal units (FUs). After evaluating the sample quality with completeness indices (CI and CI bda), we established rarefaction curves that were discussed at length together with Shannon-Wiener diversity (H'), Margalef species richness (D), and the Sørensen-Dice similarity index. In order to better understand structural changes in the mammal associations as well as the climate trends we built the body mass distribution with cenograms in the different FUs. Concurrently, we investigated the whole community using a more analytical approach with the "bioclimatic model" based on a climatic restriction index for each species to infer paleoclimatic proxies (i.e. temperatures, precipitation, aridity) and finally to assign each faunal unit to a dominant type of climate. Our results clearly indicate that the FUs could be systematically associated with a typical temperate climate with sub-Mediterranean temperate species for the largest part of the sequence, which is consistent with the dates obtained (U/Th, ESR/U-series, TT-OSL) and Marine Isotope Stage 7. Nevertheless, cold elements from a Boreal type climate component were also found in the sequence indicating possible climate oscillations in FUs. The upper part of the stratigraphy (FU II) is probably related to MIS 6 while the lowest part of the sequence (FU VII) could correspond to a cold phase of the MIS 7 or earlier (MIS 8?).

International audience; High-resolution pollen analyses were performed on two cores from the western Black Sea and one core from the Marmara Sea, covering the Late Glacial-Holocene transition using 14C chronology. Particular effort was invested in the botanical identification of pollen grains thereby significantly improving our knowledge of regional flora. When interpreted with respect to modern vegetation, pollen records revealed all the major changes caused by climatic fluctuations over the last 20,000 years. The results of this study provide evidence for the occurrence of relict thermophilous-hygrophilous trees (papillate Cupressaceae, Carya, Liquidambar, Zelkova) in certain refugia up to the Holocene. Vegetation dynamics is specified for some taxa (e.g. Cupressus–Juniperus, Fagus, Cedrus) and some ecosystems (e.g. mesophilous forests, Mediterranean sclerophyllous populations, steppes). Pollen data enabled palaeoclimatic reconstructions which were compared with available estimates in the region. The use of a powerful pollen ratio between ‘thermophilous and steppe taxa’ led to fruitful climatostratigraphic relationships with the oxygen isotope curve from the NGRIP core. The Younger Dryas and cooling at 8.2 ka are among the most obvious climatic phases identified in the three cores studied here.

Climate variability influences marine primary productivity and marine species distribution over all timescales, from seasonal to interannual variability and glacial-interglacial cycles. The links between climate and marine ecosystems are still sparsely known so that the predictions of futur changes are difficult. Moreover, because paleoclimate recorders extracted from marine archives are often linked to the functionning of the ecosystem, this lack of knowledge limits our ability to reconstruct past climate variability.This thesis work aims at improving our knowledge of these links between climate and marine ecosystems : we have looked into marine productivity changes during the last glacial-interglacial cycle, but we also examined the "end-to-end" ecosystem response to inter-annual to decadal variability in a pre-industrial climate. This work uses a climate model (IPSL-CM), a bio-geochemical model (PISCES) and a model of high trophic levels (APECOSM).First, we show that the link between Indian summer monsoon intensity and marine primary productivity in the Arabian Sea is indirect. Indeed, it appears necessary to consider the monsoon pattern, such as the Findlater Jet position, which drives the Ekman dynamics in the region, as well as its intensity to understand the productivity changes.Second, we study the marine productivity changes off the Congo river mouth and their links with the river runoff and the African atmospheric dynamics. This work shows that the relationship between monsoon intensity and trade winds intensity, often used to reconstruct past changes, is not always verified. Depending on the climate, thermal or dynamical effects are more or less prominent drivers of the simulated changes in precipitation and winds. Productivity off the Congo river mouth, which is mainly located in the subsurface, seems more affected by the ocean and atmosphere dynamics than by the river supply in nutrients.Third, we study the inter-annual variability effects over past productivity changes and over the climatic signal potentially recorded in the biological climate proxies.Finally, the last part of the thesis focuses on high trophic levels marine organisms response to climate variability at different frequencies. This study shows that marine organisms response to environmental changes varies with the organism' size and habitat.; La variabilité du système climatique influence la productivité et la distribution des espèces marines sur toutes les échelles de temps, de la variabilité saisonnière et inter-annuelle aux cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires. En particulier, la position du Jet de Findlater par rapport à la côte de la péninsule arabique est un paramètre important puisqu'elle conditionne la dynamique d'Ekman dans la région.Dans un second temps, nous avons étudié les variations de la productivité marine au large de l'embouchure du fleuve Congo et leurs liens avec le fleuve et les changements de dynamique atmosphérique africaine. Ce travail a mis en évidence que la relation entre l'intensité de la mousson et l'intensité des alizés, souvent utilisée dans les reconstructions climatiques, n'est pas toujours vérifiée. Selon le climat étudié, l'importance des effets thermiques ou dynamiques sur les changements de précipitations et de vents simulés est différente.Dans un troisième temps, nous avons étudié l'effet de la variabilité inter-annuelle sur les changements de productivité passés et sur le signal climatique potentiellement enregistré par des indicateurs climatiques biologiques.Enfin, la dernière partie de cette thèse se focalise sur la réponse des organismes marins des haut-niveaux trophiques à la variabilité climatique à différentes fréquences. Ce travail a révélé que les organismes marins répondent de façons différentes aux variations environnementales en fonction de leur taille et de leur habitat.

International audience; Late Quaternary climate variability in the southern African subtropics is still only poorly resolved, with significant complexity and apparent contradictions in the regional dataset. To more effectively interpret and synthesize key regional records, we reanalysed the data from 13 pollen sequences from the summer rainfall zone of South Africa spanning the last 45,000 years, obtaining directly comparable quantitative reconstructions of mean annual temperature and summer rainfall. Temperature reconstructions from across the region provide consistent results, with all sites reflecting trends observed in southwest Indian Ocean sea-surface temperatures in the adjacent Mozambique Channel. Precipitation reconstructions are more heterogeneous, with two distinct subregions being identified. In the northeast, long-term trends in precipitation are determined by sea-surface and continental temperature trends, revealing a positive relationship between temperature and rainfall. This long-term pattern appears to be primarily driven by high northern latitude mechanisms, with direct local insolation being subordinate. Their relative impact reversed during terminal glacial period/early Holocene, at which time direct insolation forcing became the main driver of rainfall variability. Further south, in central South Africa, precipitation variability appears also to be influenced by the latitudinal position of the Southern Hemisphere westerlies, which combine with tropical flow to create tropical-temperate trough, advecting moisture into the interior. In this region, periods of maximum precipitation coincide with periods of elevated SSTs and equatorward expansions of the westerly storm track. This study allows for a fully constrained understanding of climate dynamics along the eastern African margin for the last 45,000 years, linking dynamics to drivers and describing how the climate systems evolved across the last glacialeinterglacial transition.

International audience; We present a method of multiproxy reconstruction of the climate of Europe during the last millennium. The proxies used comprise long tree-ring width series, grape harvest dates, Greenland ice oxygen isotope series and temperature indices based on historical documents. The proxies are calibrated using gridded April to September mean temperatures for western Europe, i.e., between 10°W and 20°E and between 35°N and 55°N. They are calibrated also using the long instrumental summer temperature series of the Marseilles observatory of Longchamp, which begins in the mid-eighteenth century. The method is a combination of an analogue technique, which is able to deal with missing data, an artificial neural network technique for an optimal non-linear calibration and a bootstrap technique for calculating error bars on the reconstruction. About 70% of the temperature variance is reconstructed. The amplitude of the past temperature variations is particularly well reconstructed, which is important when considering whether the recent temperature trend is or is not within the natural variability. It appears that the temperature of the last decade of the twentieth century was reached only 14 times during the last millennium. The reconstruction is discussed with respect to other multiproxy and borehole temperature reconstructions. We conclude that a reconstruction such ours, with a specific regional focus (as opposed to the larger Northern Hemisphere) is more reliable and is in better agreement with borehole results, even allowing for the fact that only a part of the long-term variance is reconstructed. 'Little Ice Age' (c. AD 1560 - 1930) summers were 0.2±0.5°C cooler than the 1961 - 1990 period. Borehole temperatures indicate a cooling of 0.4°C which falls in the 95% confidence interval of our reconstructions.

This report presents a study of the variability in a recently published April to September gridded reconstruction temperatures in Europe and an analysis of their extremes. This reconstruction was based on tree rings, historical documents, pollen assemblages and ice cores. The methodology used, an original spectral analog method, preserves long-term variations and the variability of temperature series, which guarantees the pertinence of the analysis of the extremes over a period as long as the last millennium. The analysis of the extremes was performed with the peak-over-threshold (POT) method over two warm periods (A.D. 1000-1350 and 1880-2007) and a cold period (A.D. 1350-1950).|We found that (1) according to the long-term variations shown in this reconstruction, the growing season temperature during the last decade has exceeded all of those observed during the Medieval period; (2) the return period of the maximum event of the Medieval period has been reduced by at least a factor of 5; and (3) all decades before AD. 1350 were warm on average but relatively heterogeneous, while the last decade was homogeneously warmer. A new result of this study concerning Europe is that this anthropogenic change is characterized by spatial homogeneity, with similar changes in both average temperatures and in the distribution of extreme events, while natural climate forcings induce warm periods with heterogeneous spatial patterns and less frequent extreme events. The use of dating methods typically used in geomorphology (radio-carbon, lichenometry, lake sediments) allowed to reconstruct the evolution of glaciers in the inter-tropical Andes (Venezuela to Bolivia) over the last millennium. A first glacial advance from the 13th century has been documented on some glaciers. However, the maximum glacial extent (MGE) occurred later. It dates from the period AD 1630-1680 for the outer-tropics and from about 1730 AD for the inner-tropics. Consecutively to the MGE a glacial retreat is observed throughout the area, interrupted by periods of stagnation or even small re-advance of glacier fronts, however, never having a similar magnitude to the MGE. The paleoclimatic interpretation of these results, built from a climate/glacier modelling shows that the MGE would be the consequence of colder and wetter conditions than today. The glacial retreat following the MGE is initially associated with drier conditions (from the mid-18th century) and an increase in temperature (from the mid-19th century)., L 'usage des méthodes de datation classiques en géomorphologie (radio-carbone, lichenométrie, sédiments lacustres) a permis de reconstruire l'évolution de glaciers des Andes intertropicales (du Venezuela à la Bolivie) au cours du dernier millénaire. L'interprétation paléoclimatique des résultats, construite à partir d'une modélisation climat/glacier, montre que la PEM serait la conséquence de conditions plus froides et humides que l'actuel. International audience; We present a tree-ring-based reconstruction of last millenium summer temperature from Briançonnais in the northern French Alps. The sample material is derived from multi-centennial living trees and also includes larch (Larix decidua Mill.) series from historical construction timbers. The Regional Curve Standardization method was applied to preserve interannual to multicentennial variations in this high-elevation dataset. The proxies are inferred using a linear model and calibrated using the June to August mean temperatures from the last revised version of the HISTALP database spanning the 1760-2003 and adjusted to take into account warm bias before 1850. The transfer function has cross-validated coefficients of correlation (r) of 0.48 (0.42), reductions of error (RE) of 0.21 (0.27) and coefficients of efficiency of 0.20 (0.16). The concordance of the Briançonnais temperature reconstruction with other Alpine records suggests that the transfer function has successfully reconstructed past summer temperature during the last two millennia. Evidence was found of a warm episode between and 900 and 1200AD, and a cold phase between 1500 and 1850AD. These events were possibly correlated to the so-called 'Mediaeval Warm Period' (MWP) and 'Little Ice Age' (LIA). model reconstructed a summer temperature decrease more than 2°C for the LIA compared with the temperature prevailing during the MWP.

International audience; We present a chironomid-based reconstruction of late-Holocene temperature from Lake Anterne (2060 m a.s.l.) in the northern French Alps. Chironomid assemblages were studied in 49 samples along an 8 m long sediment core covering the last 1800 years. July air temperatures were inferred using an inference model based on the distribution of chironomid assemblages in 100 Swiss lakes. The transfer function has a leave-one-out cross-validated coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.88, a root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 1.40°C. Despite possible biases induced by methodological aspects and the ecological complexity of the chironomid response to both climate and environmental changes, the concordance of the Lake Anterne temperature reconstruction with other Alpine records suggests that the transfer function has successfully reconstructed past summer temperature during the last two millennia. The twentieth century is the only section of the record which shows a poor agreement with other climate reconstructions and the distinct warming found in most instrumental records for this period is not apparent in the Lake Anterne record. Stocking of the lake with fish from the early twentieth century onwards was found to be a possible cause of changes in the chironomid fauna and subsequent distortion in the inferred climate signal. Evidence was found of a cold phase at Lake Anterne between AD 400 and 680, a warm episode between AD 680 and 1350, and another cold phase between AD 1350 and 1900. These events were possibly correlated to the so-called ‘Dark Age Cold Period' (DACP), the ‘Mediaeval Warm Period' (MWP) and the ‘Little Ice Age' (LIA). The chironomid-based inference model reconstructed a July air temperature decrease of c. 0.7°C for the DACP and 1.3°C for the LIA compared with the temperature prevailing during the MWP.

Dating moraines by lichenometry enabled us to reconstruct glacier recession in the Bolivian Andes since the Little Ice Age maximum. On the 15 proglacial margins studied, we identified a system of ten principal moraines that marks the successive positions of glaciers over the last four centuries. Moraines were dated by performing statistical analysis of lichen measurements based on the extreme values theory. Like glaciers in many mid-latitude mountain areas, Bolivian glaciers reached their maximal extent during the second half of the 17th century. This glacier maximum coincides with the Maunder minimum of solar irradiance. By reconstructing the equilibrium-line altitude and changes in mass-balance, we think the glacier maximum may be due to a 20 to 30% increase in precipitation and a 1.1 to 1.2 °C decrease in temperature compared with present conditions. In the early 18th century, glaciers started to retreat at varying rates until the late 19th to early 20th century; this trend was generally associated with decreasing accumulation rates. By contrast, glacier recession in the 20th century was mainly the consequence of an increase in temperature and humidity. These results are consistent with observations made in the study region based on other proxies.

Progress in understanding climate variability through the last millennium leans on simulation and reconstruction efforts. Exercises blending both approaches present a great potential for answering questions relevant both for the simulation and reconstruction of past climate, and depend on the specific peculiarities of proxies and methods involved in climate reconstructions, as well as the realism and limitations of model simulations. This talk addresses the use of millennial simulations with the ECHO-g model to explore three main issues that group most of the interaction between model and geothermal efforts: the use of models as a validation tool for borehole climate reconstructions; comparison of geothermal information and model simulations as a means of either model validation or inference about past climate; and implications of the degree of realism on simulating subsurface climate on estimations of future climate change.
