Abstract

International audience; The ATLAS Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) is the central section of the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. It provides important information for reconstruction of hadrons, jets, hadronic decays of tau leptons and missing transverse energy. This sampling calorimeter uses steel plates as absorber and scintillating tiles as active medium. Scintillating light is transmitted by wavelength shifting fibres to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the rear girders of the wedge-shaped calorimeter modules. Photomultiplier signals are then digitized at 40 MHz and stored on-detector in digital pipelines. Event data are transmitted off-detector upon a first level trigger acceptance, at a maximum rate of 100 kHz. The readout is segmented into about 5000 cells, each read out by two PMTs on opposite sides of the cells. To calibrate and monitor the stability and performance of each part of the readout chain during the data taking, a set of calibration systems is used. The TileCal calibration system comprises Cesium radioactive sources, a laser, a charge injection system and an integrator based readout system. Combined information from all systems allows the calorimeter response to be monitored and equalised at each stage of the signal production, from scintillation light to digitisation. After exposure to scintillator light for almost 10 years, variations in gain have been observed when the PMTs are exposed to large light currents. These variations have been studied and correlated to some intrinsic properties of the PMTs, including the quantum efficiency, as well as operation conditions like the High Voltage. Latest results and conclusions are presented.

Abstract

The uncertainty in the initial neutrino flux is the main limitation for a precise determination of the absolute neutrino cross section. The ERC funded ENUBET project (2016-2021) is studying a facility based on a narrow band beam to produce an intense source of electron neutrinos with a ten-fold improvement in accuracy. Since March 2019 ENUBET is also a Neutrino Platform experiment at CERN: NP06/ENUBET. A key element of the project is the instrumentation of the decay tunnel to monitor large angle positrons produced together with $\nu_e$ in the three body decays of kaons ($K_{e3}$) and to discriminate them from neutral and charged pions. The need for an efficient and high purity e/$\pi$ separation over a length of several meters, and the requirements for fast response and radiation hardness imposed by the harsh beam environment, suggested the implementation of a longitudinally segmented Fe/scintillator calorimeter with a readout based on WLS fibers and SiPM detectors. An extensive experimental program through several test beam campaigns at the CERN-PS T9 beam line has been pursued on calorimeter prototypes, both with a shashlik and a lateral readout configuration. The latter, in which fibers collect the light from the side of the scintillator tiles, allows to place the light sensors away from the core of the calorimeter, thus reducing possible irradiation damages with respect to the shashlik design. This contribution will present the achievements of the prototyping activities carried out, together with irradiation tests made on the Silicon Photo-Multipliers. Abstract

International audience; The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will integrate 10 times more luminosity than the LHC, posing significant challenges for radiation tolerance and event pileup on detectors, especially for forward calorimetry, and hallmarks the issue for future colliders. As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS collaboration is designing a High Granularity Calorimeter to replace the exist- ing endcap calorimeters. It features unprecedented transverse and longitudinal segmentation for both electromagnetic (ECAL) and hadronic (HCAL) compartments. This will facilitate particle- flow calorimetry, where the fine structure of showers can be measured and used to enhance pileup rejection and particle identification, whilst still achieving good energy resolution. The ECAL and a large fraction of HCAL will be based on hexagonal silicon sensors of 0.5 - 1 cm2 cell size, with the remainder of the HCAL based on highly-segmented scintillators with SiPM readout. The intrinsic high-precision timing capabilities of the silicon sensors will add an extra dimension to event reconstruction, especially in terms of pileup rejection. An overview of the HGCAL project will be presented, covering motivation, engineering design, readout and trigger concepts, and performance (simulated and from beam tests).

Abstract

We review the development of silicon-based calorimeters from the very first applications of small calorimeters used in collider experiments to the large-scale systems that are being designed today. We discuss silicon-based electromagnetic calorimeters for future e− e+ colliders and for the upgrade of the CMS experiment's endcap calorimeter to be used in the high-luminosity phase of the LHC. We present the intrinsic advantages of silicon as an active detector material and highlight the enabling technologies that have made calorimeters with very high channel densities feasible. We end by discussing the outlook for further extensions to the silicon calorimeter concept, such as calorimeters with fine-pitched pixel detectors.

Abstract

International audience; The design and optimization of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) are crucial for the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) project, a proposed future Higgs/Z factory. Following the reference design of the International Large Detector (ILD), a set of silicon-tungsten sampling ECAL geometries are implemented into the Geant4 simulation, whose performance is then scanned using Arbor algorithm. The photon energy response at different ECAL longitudinal structures is analyzed, and the separation performance between nearby photon showers with different ECAL transverse cell sizes is investigated and parametrized. The overall performance is characterized by a set of physics benchmarks, including νν H events where Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons (EM objects) or gluons (jets) and Z→τ+τ− events. Based on these results, we propose an optimized ECAL geometry for the CEPC project.

Abstract

International audience; Shashlik calorimeters are sampling calorimeters using wavelength shifting fibers running perpendicularly to the scintillating/absorber plates for the light readout. These devices are cost-effective, easy to assemble, and characterized by a good flexibility in terms of energy resolution. On the contrary, the perpendicular optical fiber readout and the resulting fiber bundling to the photosensor pose a strong limitation to the longitudinal segmentation. Recently, the fast development of solid state photosensors allowed for the integration of the readout system directly in the bulk of the calorimeter, opening new possibilities in terms of longitudinal segmentation (SCENTT INFN R &D). In an ultra-compact module every single fiber segment is directly connected to a SiPM; the SiPMs are arranged in arrays on custom PCBs and readout by a fast electronics based on waveform digitizers. This detector technology is the baseline option for ENUBET: a 5 year project (2016-2021) funded by the European Research Council aiming to demonstrate the possibility of a complete instrumentation of the decay tunnel of conventional neutrino beam. This technique allows for a ten-fold reduction on the neutrino flux normalization error. In the talk we will present the results and a detailed performance assessment of the novel ultra-compact design obtained with a prototype of longitudinally segmented shashlik calorimeter, readout with SiPMs embedded in the calorimeter bulk. Tests performed at the CERN PST9 beamline in the 1-5 GeV energy range in November 2016 provided results in terms of linearity, energy resolution and e/π discrimination at various beam angles reproducing the grazing incident conditions typical of neutrino beam decay tunnels. We will also present results from a neutron irradiation campaign of our Silicon Photomultipliers at the INFN-LNL CN accelerator allowing to test neutron fluences of O(1012/cm2) using 5 MeV protons on a Be target.

Abstract

High precision physics at future colliders as the International Linear Collider (ILC) require unprecedented high precision in the determination of the energy of final state particles. The needed precision will be achieved thanks to the Particle Flow algorithms (PF) which require highly granular and hermetic calorimeters systems.The physical proof of concept of the PF was performed in the previous campaign of beam tests of physic prototypes within the CALICE collaboration. One of these prototypes was the physics prototype of the Silicon-Tungsten Electromagnetic Calorimeter (SiW-ECAL) for the ILC. In this document we present the latest news on R\&D of the next generation prototype, the technological prototype with fully embedded very front-end (VFE) electronics, of the SiW-ECAL. Special emphasis is given to the presentation and discussion of the first results from the beam test done at DESY in June 2017. Abstract

SuperNEMO is a double-$\beta$ decay experiment, which will employ the successful tracker-calorimeter technique used in the recently completed NEMO-3 experiment. SuperNEMO will implement 100 kg of double-$\beta$ decay isotope, reaching a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) half-life of the order of $10^{26}$ yr, corresponding to a Majorana neutrino mass of 50-100 meV. One of the main goals and challenges of the SuperNEMO detector development programme has been to reach a calorimeter energy resolution, $\Delta$E/E, around 3%/$sqrt(E)$(MeV) $\sigma$, or 7%/$sqrt(E)$(MeV) FWHM (full width at half maximum), using a calorimeter composed of large volume plastic scintillator blocks coupled to photomultiplier tubes. We describe the R\&D programme and the final design of the SuperNEMO calorimeter that has met this challenging goal.

Abstract

The Heavy Photon Search experiment (HPS) is searching for a new gauge boson, the so-called "heavy photon." Through its kinetic mixing with the Standard Model photon, this particle could decay into an electron-positron pair. It would then be detectable as a narrow peak in the invariant mass spectrum of such pairs, or, depending on its lifetime, by a decay downstream of the production target. The HPS experiment is installed in Hall-B of Jefferson Lab. This article presents the design and performance of one of the two detectors of the experiment, the electromagnetic calorimeter, during the runs performed in 2015-2016. The calorimeter's main purpose is to provide a fast trigger and reduce the copious background from electromagnetic processes through matching with a tracking detector. The detector is a homogeneous calorimeter, made of 442 lead-tungstate (PbWO4) scintillating crystals, each read out by an avalanche photodiode coupled to a custom trans-impedance amplifier., 34 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

On behalf of the ENUBET Collaboration. Proceedings of the IPRD2016 conference. 14th Topical Seminar on Innovative Particle and Radiation Detectors (IPRD16) A reduction of the neutrino flux uncertainty by one order of magnitude in conventional neutrino beams can be achieved monitoring the positron production in the decay tunnel originating from the Ke3 decays of charged kaons. This novel approach will be developed in the framework of the ERC ENUBET Project. In this talk we present the aims of the project and the ongoing R&D for the instrumentation of the decay tunnel. In particular, we describe a specialized shashlik calorimeter (iron-scintillator) with a compact readout based on small-area silicon photo multipliers that allows for a very effective longitudinal segmentation of the detector to enhance electron/hadron separation. The expected performance of the detector estimated from a full GEANT4 simulation of the neutrino decay tunnel are presented. We also discuss preliminary results on a prototype composed by 12 ultra compact modules exposed to pions and electrons at CERN-PS.

Abstract

The Particle Flow Algorithms adopted for future $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders detectors and phase-II CMS upgrade require very high granularity calorimeters to deconvolve the individual contributions of particles in jets. This is especially true for electromagnetic calorimeters (ECAL). For a realistic large detector many technological requirements have to be fulfilled: modularity for industrialization; compact integration of an embedded very front-end electronics featuring large dynamics, low-power and self-triggering; mechanical structure and cooling systems with minimal dead zones. The technological prototype of the silicon-tungsten (SiW) ECAL presented here should achieve all this. 10 layers are produced and tested in beam, while design and optimization studies are ongoing on a variety of simulated key processes to test the performance of the hardware and the algorithms., Proceedings for 38th International Conference on High Energy Physics

Abstract

International audience; Calorimetry at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) faces two enormous challenges, particularly in the forward direction: radiation tolerance and unprecedented in-time event pileup. To meet these challenges, the CMS experiment has decided to construct a High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), featuring a previously unrealized transverse and longitudinal segmentation, for both electromagnetic and hadronic compartments. This will facilitate particle-flow-type calorimetry, where the fine structure of showers can be measured and used to enhance particle identification, energy resolution and pileup rejection. The majority of the HGCAL will be based on robust and cost-effective hexagonal silicon sensors with about 1cm$^2$ or 0.5cm$^2$ hexagonal cell size, with the final 5 interaction lengths of the hadronic compartment being based on highly segmented plastic scintillator with on-scintillator SiPM readout. We present an overview of the HGCAL project, including the motivation, engineering design, readout concept and simulated performance.
