The nanoscience and nano technology development determine the continual device miniaturization. Until now, lithography has been the main driving force of this process, but reaches its resolution limits. In this context and to meet future technological requirements, new patterning techniques will have to be considered. Due to its nanometric size (diameter of 2 nm), its capacity for self-assembly, its structural diversity and the possibilities of functionalization, DNA constitutes a promising approach making it possible to push back the limits of resolution obtained by photolithography processes. In particular, it offers the possibility of creating 2D and 3D architectures, defined to the nearest nanometer. DNA origami based lithography have become of great interest for highresolution patterning due to of their facility, elegance and high throughput. Self-assembling materials used in conjunction with the most advanced exposure tools may enable extension of current manufacturing practices to dimensions of 10 nm and less.This thesis work demonstrates the feasibility of nano-structuring the surface of a silicon substrate from a DNA origami mask. It aims at a sub-10 nm resolution, a pattern density compatible with microelectronic applications, but also the realization of complex self-aligned structures.The studies carried out during this work focused on two axes. We were first interested in etching processes and their characterization, allowing the transfer of sub-10 nm motifs from an origami DNA mask. A second area of work focused on the individual positioning of these structures. For this, we have implement a new nano-patterning hybrid process by combining conventional lithography and self-assembly of DNA origami. By locally controlling the surface properties we managed the placement of single DNA origami on the substrate, in order to integrate them into functional devices., Les technologies de l'information requièrent des dispositifs électroniques de plus en plus complexes qui, dans une démarche logique de miniaturisation, combinent à la fois haute résolution, haute densité ainsi qu’un design complexe. Dans ce contexte et pour répondre aux futures exigences des technologies, de nouvelles techniques de patterning devront être envisagées. De par son gabarit nanométrique (diamètre de 2 nm), sa capacité à l'auto-assemblage et les possibilités de fonctionnalisation, l'ADN constitue une approche prometteuse permettant de repousser les limites de résolution obtenues par les procédés de photolithographie. Plus particulièrement, l’auto-assemblage d’origamis d’ADN, dans lequel un simple brin d’ADN est replié de manière programmable par des brins d’ADN synthétiques plus petits appelés agrafes, offre la possibilité de réaliser des architectures en 2D et en 3D, définies au nanomètre près.Ce travail de thèse démontre la faisabilité de nano-structurer la surface d'un substrat de silicium à partir d’un masque en origami d'ADN. Il vise une résolution sub-10 nm, une densité de motifs compatible avec des applications microélectroniques, mais aussi la réalisation de structures complexes auto-alignées.Les études réalisées au cours de ces travaux se sont focalisées autour de deux axes. Nous nous sommes tout d’abord intéressés aux procédés de gravure afin de transférer des motifs sub-10 nm à partir d’un masque en origami d’ADN. Un deuxième axe de travail a porté sur le positionnement individuel de ces structures. Pour cela, un procédé de structuration de surface a été développé, grâce à l’utilisation de techniques de lithographie conventionnelles, permettant le positionnement déterministe d’origamis d’ADN sur un substrat de silicium.

This review presents the different physical descriptions of cell assemblies. After a short presentation of discrete models, very popular in studies of epithelial tissues, we focus more on multi-cellular spheroids containing a variety of components. In particular, we highlight both an approach based on the Smoluchowski theory of aggregation that does not consider the spatial structure of the aggregates and a continuous model for cell mixtures based on the Onsager formalism combined with the Rayleigh principle for the dynamics of dissipative systems. We show how the first approach allows to obtain the physical constants of the cells by comparison with experimental aggregates comprising a single cancerous cell line, while the second one determines the fate of interacting and proliferating cell mixing as a function of the access to nutrients. For both models, the formalism is deeply revisited to be adapted to the specificity and diversity of biological multi-component tissues. Finite element numerical simulations are shown to illustrate the potential of these physical studies.

For several years, there has been growing interest in the development of new solvents, such as ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). ILs are salts with a melting point below 100~°C. DES are solvents resulting from the mixing of molecules which interact strongly with each other by hydrogen bonds; this leads to the melting temperature decreasing and becoming lower than those of the starting compounds. ILs and DESs are interesting solvents with a negligible saturation vapour temperature. They are non-flammable, biocompatible and of natural origin, which is questionable for ILs. This manuscript describes the preparation of three categories of materials: 1) biobased materials based on guar, a plant-based polysaccharide, mixed with a panel of DES of natural origin to obtain fully biobased blends. This thesis includes different sections aiming t the development of materials using i) DES as solvents and structuring agents, ii) ILs as monomers. Their thermal, rheological and ion transport properties were characterized and the internal organization was studied by radiation scattering techniques, 2) graft copolymers consisting of guar as the main chain and having poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) side grafts; these copolymers were obtained by the "grafting from" approach using RAFT polymerization. 3) particles consisting entirely of PIL and derived from polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). New isomeric monomeric ILs with dual solubility in water once polymerized have been synthesized and used in PISA, allowing the generation of objects of various morphology and size., Depuis plusieurs années, le développement de nouveaux solvants, comme les liquides ioniques (ILs) et les solvants eutectiques profonds (DES), suscite un intérêt grandissant. Les ILs sont des sels possédant une température de fusion inférieure à 100 °C. Les DES sont des solvants issus du mélange de molécules interagissant fortement entre elles par liaisons hydrogène, conduisant à une forte diminution de la température de fusion, devenue bien inférieure à celles des composés de départ. Les ILs et les DES sont des solvants intéressants qui possèdent une pression de vapeur saturante négligeable, sont non inflammables et présentent, généralement, une bonne stabilité thermique et chimique. Les DES peuvent être biodégradables, biocompatibles, d’origine naturelle, ce qui est discutable pour les ILs. Ce projet de thèse rassemble différentes parties visant le développement de matériaux intégrant i) des DES, utilisés en tant que solvants et agents structurants, ii) des ILs utilisés en tant que monomères. Cette thèse décrit la préparation de trois catégories de matériaux : 1) des matériaux biosourcés à base de guar, un polysaccharide d’origine végétale, mélangé avec un panel de DES d’origine naturelle pour obtenir des mélanges entièrement biosourcés. Leurs propriétés thermiques, rhéologiques, et de transport ionique ont été caractérisées et l’organisation interne a été étudiée par des techniques de diffusion de rayonnement, 2) des copolymères greffés constitués de guar en tant que chaîne principale et possédant des greffons latéraux de poly(liquide ionique) (PIL) ; ces copolymères ont été obtenus par l’approche de “grafting from" en utilisant la polymérisation RAFT. 3) des particules entièrement constituées de PIL et issues d’un auto-assemblage induit par la polymérisation (PISA). De nouveaux ILs monomères isomères présentant une dualité de solubilité dans l’eau une fois polymérisés, ont été synthétisés et utilisés en PISA, permettant de générer des objets de morphologie et de taille variées.

International audience; The link between the morphology and the electrical properties of the sol–gel processed Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 thin films is investigated. Previous studies have not fully explained the differences in growth morphology as a function of the elaboration conditions. The thin films were investigated by Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS), x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. More precisely, prototype films were studied as a function of the annealing temperature: at low temperatures (140 °C–200 °C) by in situ GISAXS and at high temperatures (600 °C–800 °C) by ex situ GISAXS. At ∼150 °C, self-organized domains with a preferential distance of approximately 14 nm are formed. At high annealing temperatures, the growing domains become either nanoparticles or pores with a preferential distance of approximately 85 nm at 600 °C. This growth evolution is successfully explained by a general model based on convection and evaporation. With thermal annealing, the characteristic lengths parallel to the surface increase due to convection and the characteristic lengths perpendicular to the surface decrease due to evaporation. In addition, two types of annealing were investigated at 700 °C. For annealing after each other layer, a growth with vertically shifted particles occurs with no ferroelectric behavior. On the contrary, for annealing after each deposited layer, a columnar growth occurs and a ferroelectric hysteresis loop is obtained. The ferroelectricity of the sol–gel barium strontium titanate thin films is definitely linked to the complete removal of organic constituents leading to columnar growth.

The interfacial and foam properties of a model system based on the mixture between myristic acid and choline hydroxide have been investigated as a function of the molar ratio (R) between these two components and temperature. The aim of this study was to obtain insight on the links between the self-assemblies in bulk and in the foam liquid channels, the surfactant packing at the interface, and the resulting foam properties and stability. A multiscale approach was used combining small angle neutron scattering, specular neutron reflectivity, surface tension measurements, and photography. We highlighted three regimes of foam stability in this system by modifying R: high foam stability for R < 1, intermediate at R ∼ 1, and low for R > 1. The different regimes come from the pH variations in bulk linked to R. The pH plays a crucial role at the molecular scale by setting the ionization state of the myristic acid molecules adsorbed at the gas-liquid interface, which in turn controls both the properties of the monolayer and the stability of the films separating the bubbles. The main requirement to obtain stable foams is to set the pH close to the pKa in order to have a mixture of protonated and ionized molecules giving rise to intermolecular hydrogen bonds. As a result, a dense monolayer is formed at the interface with a low surface tension. R also modifies the structure of self-assembly in bulk and therefore within the foam, but such a morphological change has only a minor effect on the foam stability. This study confirms that foam stability in surfactant systems having a carboxylic acid as polar headgroup is mainly linked to the ionization state of the molecules at the interface. In the field of drug delivery systems, polymeric nanogels obtained by the self-assembly of biocompatible amphiphilic polymers in water have emerged as one of the most promising nanocarriers for various hydrophobic drugs. These systems offer several advantages such as enhanced hydrophobic drug solubility in water, decreased side effects, and improved drug delivery to tumor tissues via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. In this regard, stimuli-responsive polymeric nanogels are attractive platforms for drug delivery due to their ability to change their physical and/or chemical properties in response to an external stimulus such as light, magnetic field, pH or temperature. Thermoresponsive polymers are particularly interesting due to their ability to undergo a reversible thermally-induced phase transition without the need of additional reagents. In this context, our aim was to engineer and to study a new class of thermoresponsive, biocompatible and biodegradable nanogels based on glycoaminoglycans (GAGs) through the modification of the polysaccharide backbone with a thermoresponsive copolymer of di(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (DEGMA) and n-butylmethacrylate (BMA)). The latter was properly designed to obtain stable nanogels at room temperature. The versatile synthetic route to nanogels also allowed their further shell-crosslinking to capture the nanogel structure at low temperature. The choice of the GAGs forming the hydrophilic shell can be exploited to control their biological behavior. In order to use these systems as a versatile platform for delivery of active ingredients and other molecules of interest, we investigated the possibility of incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic guidance, imaging and hyperthermia treatment. International audience; Systems with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions are able to form mesophases at sufficiently low temperatures. In two dimensions, such mesophases emerge as clusters, stripes or bubbles. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we investigate the static and the dynamic properties of such a cluster-forming system over a broad temperature range and for different densities. Via the static properties we analyse how ordering into close packed configurations sets in both at the level of the particles as well as at the level of the clusters. The dynamic properties provide information on how, at low temperature, the motion of individual particles is influenced by the dynamic slowing down of the clusters. This work is focused on improving the biospecificity properties of fluorescent polymer probes, with controlled architectures, for two main applications: the in vivo targeting of cancer tumors and the labeling of proteins for in cellulo studies. For a targeted imaging of tumor angiogenesis in vivo, targeting systems presenting two levels of multivalency were developed by combining both i) well-controlled polymers synthesized by RAFT polymerization and the PISA process, ii) peptide tetravalent clusters exhibiting a high affinity for the αvβ3 integrins and iii) fluorophores emitting in the far red / near-infrared for a monitoring in vitro and in vivo by optical microscopy. Two types of probes were synthesized, linear conjugates and hairy nanoparticles. Multivalent presentation of the peptide cluster induced a significant increase of the affinity for αvβ3 integrins. The first biological evaluations also indicated an efficient cellular internalization of polymer probes mediated by the peptide clusters and a selective labeling of cells over-expressing αvβ3 integrins. For protein labeling, two strategies were explored: the labeling of native proteins by covalent coupling of ω-functional polymer probes and the labeling of recombinant proteins by probes bearing a specific ligand at one chain-end. For the first strategy, an activated ester function was introduced at the ω-end of polymer probes by thiol-ene chemistry to label the lysine residues of native proteins. This approach resulted in a poly-labeling, difficult to control but providing highly bright bioconjugates. For the second strategy, a nitrilotriacetic acid group (NTA) was introduced at the α-end of polymers probes to specifically label Histidine tagged proteins. This approach enabled an efficient labeling of different proteins with a more precise control of the number of probes per protein and of the binding site. Finally, following this work, a new synthetic strategy of sequenced polymers by successive addition of hetero-bifunctional monomers using highly efficient, selective and orthogonal chemical reactions was proposed and validated.; Ce travail est axé sur l’amélioration des propriétés de biospécificité de sondes polymères fluorescentes, d’architectures contrôlées synthétisées par polymérisation RAFT, pour deux applications principales : le ciblage de tumeurs cancéreuses in vivo et le marquage de protéines pour des études in cellulo. Pour une imagerie ciblée de l’angiogénèse tumorale in vivo, des systèmes de ciblage multivalents à deux niveaux ont été élaborés en combinant à la fois i) des polymères bien contrôlés synthétisés par polymérisation RAFT et par le procédé PISA, ii) des clusters peptidiques tétravalents présentant une forte affinité pour les intégrines αvβ3 et iii) des fluorophores émettant dans le rouge lointain/proche-infrarouge pour un suivi in vitro et in vivo par microscopie optique. Deux types de sondes ont été synthétisés, des conjugués linéaires et des nanoparticules chevelues. La présentation multivalente du cluster peptidique permet d’augmenter considérablement l’affinité pour les intégrines αvβ3. Les premières évaluations biologiques indiquent une internalisation cellulaire des sondes polymères médiée par les clusters peptidiques ainsi qu’un marquage sélectif des cellules sur-exprimant les intégrines αVβ3. Pour le marquage de protéines, deux stratégies ont été explorées : le marquage de protéines natives par couplage covalent de sondes ω-fonctionnelles et le marquage de protéines recombinantes par des sondes porteuses d’un ligand spécifique. Pour la première stratégie, une fonction ester activé a été introduite en extrémité ω de sondes polymères par chimie thiol-ène pour marquer les résidus lysines des protéines natives. Cette approche a abouti à un poly-marquage difficile à contrôler mais offrant une brillance élevée. Pour la seconde stratégie, un groupement acide nitrilotriacétique (NTA) a été introduit en extrémité α des sondes polymères afin de marquer spécifiquement les protéines taguées Histidines. Cette approche a permis un marquage efficace de différentes protéines et permet de contrôler précisément le nombre de sondes par protéine ainsi que leur site de fixation sur la protéine. Finalement, suite à ces travaux, une nouvelle stratégie de synthèse de polymères séquencés par addition successive de monomères hétéro-bifonctionnels en utilisant des réactions chimiques très efficaces, sélectives et orthogonales a été proposée et validée.

International audience; Well-defined thermoresponsive amphiphilic statistical copolymers based on N-vinylcaprolactam (VCL) and vinyl acetate (VAc) were successfully synthesized by RAFT/MADIX polymerization mediated by O-ethyl-S-(1-ethoxycarbonyl)ethyldithiocarbonate chain transfer agent at 65 °C. We achieved the synthesis of a series of copolymers with controlled molar masses and low dispersities over a wide range of monomer feed ratios (0 < fVAc,0 < 1). Both conventional linearization methods and a nonlinear least-squares methods (NLLS) were applied to estimate reliable values of reactivity ratios for VAc and VCL radical polymerization in regards to the disparate values previously reported in the literature. The highest measurement precision was observed for the NLLS method based on the integrated form of the copolymerization equation developed by Skeist. The calculated values of the reactivity ratios (rVAc = 0.33 ± 0.10 and rVCL = 0.29 ± 0.15) perfectly fitted the drift in monomer feed ratio versus conversion. The VCL and VAc monomer units are distributed homogeneously along the copolymer chains. Both the cloud point temperatures and glass transition temperatures evolve linearly with the copolymer composition. Analyses of the aqueous solutions of the amphiphilic copolymers by means of dynamic and static light scattering show that P(VAc-co-VCL) copolymers undergo a reversible temperature-induced conformational change between large aggregates (T > Tcloud point) and either unimers for FVAc inferior to 0.3 (Nagg = 1, Dh7 nm) or small aggregates for FVAc = 0.53 (Nagg = 3, Dh 14 nm). © 2016 American Chemical Society.

This thesis presents a new approach to produce mix matrix membranes using block copolymers and inorganic nanoparticles having magnetic properties. The polymeric nanoparticle with different morphologies (linear, Spheres, worms, and vesicles), from poly (methacrylic acid)-b-(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer, were synthesized using Reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) in ethanol at 70 ֠C. The inorganic counterpart, iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared using different stabilizers at various temperatures to acquire the necessary surface charge and magnetic properties. The chemistry of the particles leads to form both hydrophobic membranes using non-solvent induced phase separation as well as a hydrophilic membrane by using the simple spin coating technique with the particles from polymerization induced self-assembly. By a detailed experimental study of the membrane filtration, the influence of different parameters on the process performance has been investigated with and without magnetic field. Finally, membrane fouling has been studied using protein solution. Also, the membrane performance was examined under magnetic field revealing the successful reduction in the fouling phenomenon making them new performant membranes in the area of membrane technology., Ce travail de thèse propose une nouvelle approche pour la préparation de membranes à matrice mixte basée sur l’utilisation de copolymères à blocs et de nanoparticules inorganiques disposant de propriétés magnétiques. Des aggrégats de copolymères ont été préparés avec une morphologie variée (sphères, cylindres et vésicules) à partir du copolymère poly(acide méthacrylique)-b-poly(méthacrylate de méthyle). Ce dernier a été synthétisé par polymérisation radicalaire contrôlée par transfert de chaîne réversible par addition-fragmentation (RAFT) dans l’éthanol à 70°C. Des particules d’oxyde de fer ont, quant à elles, été préparées en présence de différents stabilisants à température variée pour permettre d’atteindre la charge de surface et les propriétés magnétiques recherchées. La structure des copolymères à bloc a permis d’obtenir à la fois des membranes hydrophobes via le procédé de séparation de phase induite par un non-solvant, ainsi que des membranes hydrophiles lorsque que la technique de spin-coating était appliquée aux aggrégats formés par auto-assemblage induit lors de la polymérisation. Grâce à l’étude détaillée des propriétés de filtration des membranes obtenues, la relation structure-propriété a été discutée sous l’action d’un champ magnétique externe. Enfin, la sensibilité au colmatage a été vérifiée via la filtration de solutions de protéines. Il a ainsi été démontré une diminution notable du colmatage sous champ magnétique, ouvrant de belles perspectives pour ces nouvelles membranes.

This work is focused on improving the biospecificity properties of fluorescent polymer probes, with controlled architectures, for two main applications: the in vivo targeting of cancer tumors and the labeling of proteins for in cellulo studies. For a targeted imaging of tumor angiogenesis in vivo, targeting systems presenting two levels of multivalency were developed by combining both i) well-controlled polymers synthesized by RAFT polymerization and the PISA process, ii) peptide tetravalent clusters exhibiting a high affinity for the αvβ3 integrins and iii) fluorophores emitting in the far red / near-infrared for a monitoring in vitro and in vivo by optical microscopy. Two types of probes were synthesized, linear conjugates and hairy nanoparticles. Multivalent presentation of the peptide cluster induced a significant increase of the affinity for αvβ3 integrins. The first biological evaluations also indicated an efficient cellular internalization of polymer probes mediated by the peptide clusters and a selective labeling of cells over-expressing αvβ3 integrins. For protein labeling, two strategies were explored: the labeling of native proteins by covalent coupling of ω-functional polymer probes and the labeling of recombinant proteins by probes bearing a specific ligand at one chain-end. For the first strategy, an activated ester function was introduced at the ω-end of polymer probes by thiol-ene chemistry to label the lysine residues of native proteins. This approach resulted in a poly-labeling, difficult to control but providing highly bright bioconjugates. For the second strategy, a nitrilotriacetic acid group (NTA) was introduced at the α-end of polymers probes to specifically label Histidine tagged proteins. This approach enabled an efficient labeling of different proteins with a more precise control of the number of probes per protein and of the binding site. Finally, following this work, a new synthetic strategy of sequenced polymers by successive addition of hetero-bifunctional monomers using highly efficient, selective and orthogonal chemical reactions was proposed and validated., Ce travail est axé sur l’amélioration des propriétés de biospécificité de sondes polymères fluorescentes, d’architectures contrôlées synthétisées par polymérisation RAFT, pour deux applications principales : le ciblage de tumeurs cancéreuses in vivo et le marquage de protéines pour des études in cellulo. Pour une imagerie ciblée de l’angiogénèse tumorale in vivo, des systèmes de ciblage multivalents à deux niveaux ont été élaborés en combinant à la fois i) des polymères bien contrôlés synthétisés par polymérisation RAFT et par le procédé PISA, ii) des clusters peptidiques tétravalents présentant une forte affinité pour les intégrines αvβ3 et iii) des fluorophores émettant dans le rouge lointain/proche-infrarouge pour un suivi in vitro et in vivo par microscopie optique. La présentation multivalente du cluster peptidique permet d’augmenter considérablement l’affinité pour les intégrines αvβ3. Les premières évaluations biologiques indiquent une internalisation cellulaire des sondes polymères médiée par les clusters peptidiques ainsi qu’un marquage sélectif des cellules sur-exprimant les intégrines αVβ3. Pour le marquage de protéines, deux stratégies ont été explorées : le marquage de protéines natives par couplage covalent de sondes ω-fonctionnelles et le marquage de protéines recombinantes par des sondes porteuses d’un ligand spécifique. Pour la première stratégie, une fonction ester activé a été introduite en extrémité ω de sondes polymères par chimie thiol-ène pour marquer les résidus lysines des protéines natives. Cette approche a abouti à un poly-marquage difficile à contrôler mais offrant une brillance élevée. Pour la seconde stratégie, un groupement acide nitrilotriacétique (NTA) a été introduit en extrémité α des sondes polymères afin de marquer spécifiquement les protéines taguées Histidines. Cette approche a permis un marquage efficace de différentes protéines et permet de contrôler précisément le nombre de sondes par protéine ainsi que leur site de fixation sur la protéine. Finalement, suite à ces travaux, une nouvelle stratégie de synthèse de polymères séquencés par addition successive de monomères hétéro-bifonctionnels en utilisant des réactions chimiques très efficaces, sélectives et orthogonales a été proposée et validée.

International audience; Non-ionic poly(N-acryloylmorpholine) (PNAM)-decorated polystyrene (PS) particles were synthesized by polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) in emulsion, mediated by the reversible additionfragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique, in a one-pot/two-step process. PNAM was first prepared by RAFT polymerization in water using 4-cyano-4-thiothiopropylsulfanyl pentanoic acid (CTPPA) as chain transfer agent. Chain extension of PNAM by a PS block was then accomplished by the polymerization of styrene in water. Spherical nanoparticles (number-average diameter < 60 nm) exclusively composed of well-defined PNAM-b-PS amphiphilic block copolymers (1.1 < D < 1.4) were successfully obtained under a broad range of conditions (PNAM number-average molar mass of 2000, 4000 and 8000 g mol(-1), and average polymerization degree of the PS block from 150 up to 1600). Mannuronan (ManA(17))-and guluronan (GulA(20))-decorated nanoparticles were further synthesized according to a similar PISA process. Glycuronan macromonomers carrying a methacrylate polymerizable group (ManA(17)MA or GulA(20)MA) were first copolymerized with N-acryloylmorpholine (NAM) under successful RAFT control using CTPPA. The resulting hydrophilic P(NAM-co-ManA(17)MA) and P(NAM-co-GulA(20)MA) macroRAFT agents were then used to polymerize styrene in water. In the first part, this transport through self-assembled synthetic systems was studied; the transport selectivity is in strong relation with the supramolecular structure, formed by weak intra and intermolecular bonds. Ion transport is studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and water transport is studied by light scattering using “stopped flow” technique. The objective is to obtain systems that could imitate transport functions of biomolecules as transmembrane proteins. This functional mimicry is achieved through self-assembly of organic molecules containing imidazole cycle and urea function that can self-assembly and form selective pathways for ion transport. To create the equivalent of the cell membrane, we used unilamellar lipid vesicles. Then, we determined a structure - transport activity relationship for a series of synthesized compounds. For the second part of this work we described the fabrication and the characterization of new thin film composite membranes for water desalination that can present a good balance between permeability and salt rejection. A series of hydrazides as molecular precursors was synthesized in order to replace the metaphenylene diamine (MPD), classically used. Again, hydrogen bonds play an important role, because the rejection is due to a high cross-linking. The polymers synthesized by interfacial polymerization were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-Ray diffraction. The membrane films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurements. cited By 18; International audience; Recent studies demonstrate that simple functional molecules, which usually form two-dimensional (2D) crystal structures when adsorbed on solid substrates, are also able to self-assemble into ordered openwork fractal aggregates. To direct and control the growth of such fractal supramolecules, it is necessary to explore the conditions under which both fractal and crystalline patterns develop and coexist. In this contribution, we study the coexistence of Sierpiński triangle (ST) fractals and 2D molecular crystals that were formed by 4,4″-dihydroxy-1,1′:3′,1″-terphenyl molecules on Au(111) in ultrahigh vacuum. Growth competition between the STs and 2D crystals was realized by tuning substrate and molecular surface coverage and changing the functional groups of the molecular building block. Density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations are used to characterize the process. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrate the possibility of steering the surface self-assembly to generate fractal and nonfractal structures made up of the same molecular building block.

The bottom-up self-assembly of colloidal particles is a versatile technique that allows the fabrication of large areas of colloidal crystals. The purpose of the present study is to develop highly reliable and reproducible process routes to fabricate nanostructured photonic and plasmonic materials that can be incorporated into different devices. Titania inverse opals with precise control of the layer thickness have been successfully incorporated into solid state DSSCs which showed improved performance of up to 105 %. Nanostructured gold surfaces that exhibited omnidirectional total light absorption have been fabricated by controlled electrodeposition of gold through colloidal monolayers of polystyrenebeads. In addition, very rough gold surfaces that showed anti-reflective properties were also made. By tuning the pore size of the colloidal monolayer, plasmonic gold nanopillarswith different lengths were fabricated by a sequential electrodeposition process. Using a non close-packed monolayer of PS beadscombined with electrodeposition,fishnet metamaterialswere fabricated.; L’auto-assemblage de particules colloïdales est une technique polyvalente qui permet la fabrication de cristaux colloïdaux à de grandes échelles. The aim of this thesis titled “Zeolites as key-components for electronics and biomedicine” is the synthesis, functionalization and applications of zeolite-L particles for applications in electronics and biomedicine. This thesis is organized into 8 chapters, starting in chapter 1 with giving a general overview about nanotechnology and biomedicine. After that the concept of using nanocontainer in biomedicine are briefly discussed. In the following the nanocontainer zeolite-L is introduced and a summary of zeolite- L for applications in nanomedicine is given. Finally, the self-assembly of zeolites in monolayers and their further functionalization is discussed. Chapter 2 describes the zeolite-L synthesis, functionalization and their assembly into functional materials in detail. Three different types of zeolite-L have been used in this thesis: Nanozeolite-L particles with a size of just a few tenths of nanometers, disc-shaped zeolite-L with a diameter of around 200 nm and micrometer sized crystals with a length of about 1000 nm. Then different methods to functionalize the crystals with the desired groups and to obtain specific properties of the crystals are reported. In detail, the exchange with different counter cations, the insertion of guest molecules and the functionalization of the external crystal surface are reported. [...]; La thèse intitulée « Zeolites as key-components for electronics and biomedicine » traite de travaux sur des cristaux de zéolite-L avec des tailles et des formes différentes pour des applications dans les domaines de l’électronique et de la biomédecine. Il a été montré que, lorsque les monocouches de zéolites-L sont munies d’un biofilm, elles peuvent être utilisées comme des substrats pour une croissance de longue durée de neurones primaires. De plus, les pores des zéolites peuvent être remplies d’un spécial semi-conducteur organique, pour permettre un transport d’électrons à travers les canaux et, plus important, ces matériaux présentent une très haute magnétorésistance en y appliquant un champ magnétique externe. Enfin, les monocristaux de zéolites-L peuvent être utilisés en tant que plateforme pour un oligo-nucléotide multifonctionnel et l’administration d’un médicament-modèle à l’intérieur de cellules vivantes. Les oligo-nucléotides sont attachés aux particules de la surface externe et le médicament modèle est encapsulé dans les pores. Ces premières expériences-modèles confirment que ces systèmes offrent un grand potentiel dans le domaine de la thérapie génique. En résumé, cette thèse montre que les cristaux de zéolites-L peuvent être appliqués avec succès dans des domaines très variés, de l’électronique à la biomédecine.

Self-assembly phenomena are of prime interest in materials science, because they fill the gap between assembly of macrostructure and processing of nanomaterials. Self-assembly is based on the spontaneous organization of individual small constituents into patterns and structures. Controlling the spatial arrangement can possibly improve materials properties by maximizing its response in a given direction. Furthermore, particular types of spatial arrangement, such as found in natural structures, can even induce new properties. During the past three years, we have used ice templating process to trigger the assembly of platelet-shaped particles to replicate the hierarchical structure of nacre. Control over this technique allowed structural customization at different length-scales: local orientation of the platelets, ice crystal long range order, and the control if the interfaces between the platelets. This hierarchical process has set the ground for the creation of a new fully mineral nacre-like alumina. The local platelet self-assembly triggered by ice growth was investigated by Discrete Element Modelling which provided new insight into the dynamic phenomenon responsible for the particles alignment. Synchrotron X-ray tomography was used to validated the model results. The different architecture observed in the final samples are not the result of a percolation threshold, as one could expect, but is instead a consequence of the delicate balance between pushing and engulfment at the solidification front. The local alignment of platelets can be beneficial for the functional and structural characteristics of composites and relevant aspects for two potential applications were investigated: the thermal properties of the hexagonal boron nitride/silicon rubber composites and the mechanical properties of macroporous alumina. Further adaptation of the process allowed for long range ordering of the ice crystals (up to the centimeter scale). Different tools have also been developed in order to characterize the response of composites as a function of the architecture at the level of the macropores and particle organisation. Once those two levels of alignment were achieved, the addition of a glassy phase and nanoparticles to the grain boundaries of the platelets introduces, just like in nacre, interfaces capable of deflect and even stopping crack propagation., Les phénomènes d'auto-assemblage sont au premier plan de la recherche en sciences des matériaux car ils comblent le vide laissé entre les procédés d'assemblage à l'échelle macroscopique et nanoscopique. L'auto-assemblage est basé sur l'organisation spontanée de composants individuels en motifs et structures. Contrôler l’agencement de la matière peut accroître les propriétés de matériaux en introduisant une certaine anisotropie. Cet agencement, comme de nombreux matériaux naturels le prouvent, peut même sous certaines conditions faire émerger de nouvelles caractéristiques. Au cours de ces trois années, nous avons utilisé l’ « ice templating » (texturation à la glace) pour déclencher l’alignement de plaquettes de dimensions microniques, le but final étant de répliquer la microstructure de la nacre. Cette technique induit la ségrégation des constituants d’une suspension à l’échelle du micron tout en obtenant des échantillons de quelques centimètres cubes. Ce procédé a permis la création de matériaux inorganique avec une microstructure semblable à la nacre, en additionnant trois niveaux de contrôles successifs : l’alignement local des plaquettes, l’alignement à longue distance des cristaux de glaces et enfin le contrôle de l’interface entre ces-mêmes plaquettes. L’utilisation d’une modélisation par éléments discrets nous a permis d’étudier la dynamique de l’auto-assemblage des particules anisotropes. Ce modèle, parce qu’il tient compte de la dynamique du procédé, nous a révélé comment l’organisation de ces particules se produit. La tomographie par rayon X a permis de visualiser les structures finales des échantillons et d’attester de la pertinence du modèle. L’alignement local des plaquettes dans les parois générées par la solidification de la glace peuvent accroître les propriétés fonctionnelles et structurales de composites. Dans ce cadres deux applications ont été étudiées : la conduction thermique dans des composites nitrure de bore hexagonal / silicone et les propriétés mécaniques d’alumine macroporeuses. Une adaptation du procédé a permis d’obtenir l’alignement à longue distance (quelques centimètres) des cristaux de glaces. Différents outils ont été développés pour caractériser la réponse fonctionnelle de ce type de composite en fonction de leurs architectures aux deux échelles considérées (celles des macropores et parois). Enfin, après la mise en place de ces deux niveaux de contrôle sur la structure, l’addition d’une phase vitreuse inorganique et de nanoparticules aux joints de grains des plaquettes a introduit, de façon similaire à la nacre, des interfaces pouvant dévier et arrêter la propagation de fissures.

This work deals with the design of novel hydrogen-bond donor polymers and their use as partner in new tailor-made multilayered films prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) process. In this context, a novel regioselective and chemoselective “click-type” reaction of unprotected mercaptoalcohols onto poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluoro-styrene) (PPFS) has been developed, and applied to the synthesis of new hydroxylated H-bond donor polymers. This coupling with heterofunctional thiol is used to prepare a library of polymers differing in the degree of substitution (DS) and/or functionality. The fine control of these parameters makes it possible to tune their interaction ability with various acceptor polymers such as poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP), poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), such that all possible scenarios (immiscible blend, partially or totally miscible blend or interpolymer complex) can be achieved. Subsequently, the resulting H-bond donor polymers (PPFS derivatives) were used to successfully build-up multilayered films with using P4VP as partner via layer-by-layer (LbL) through the dip deposition process. The influence of various parameters related to structure of the partners (DS, nature of the PPFS derivatives), the chemical structure of the surface onto which the film is built-up (self-assembled monolayer vs. polymer brush) and the deposition process (concentration of deposition solutions, nature of the first deposited partner) was in-depth evaluated, on both the growth mechanism and on the surface features of the multilayered films., Ce travail est consacré à la synthèse de nouveaux polymères donneurs de liaison Hydrogène et à leur utilisation comme partenaire dans la construction de nouveaux films multicouches préparés par le procédé d’élaboration en couche-par-couche (LbL). Le contrôle de ces paramètres structuraux permet de moduler leur force d’interactions avec des partenaires accepteurs de liaison H variés, comme la poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP), le poly(acrylate de n-butyle) (PBA) et le poly(oxyde d'éthylène) (PEO), de telle façon que tous les types de mélanges binaires (mélange non miscible, partiellement ou totalement miscible, ou complexe interpolymère) peuvent être obtenus. Ensuite, les dérivés de PPFS donneurs de liaisons H ont été utilisés en partenariat avec le P4VP pour élaborer avec succès de nouveaux films multicouche dont la force motrice est l’établissement de liaisons H. L'influence de nombreux paramètres relatifs à la structure des polymères donneurs (DS, structure chimique du groupement associatif), au type de modification chimique subie par le substrat sur lequel est élaboré le film multicouche (monocouche auto-assemblée vs. polymère greffée en conformation de type brosse) ou encore des paramètres expérimentaux liés aux conditions de dépôt (concentration des solutions de dépôt, nature du partenaire adsorbé en premier) a été étudiée. Plus particulièrement, le mécanisme de croissance ainsi que les caractéristiques de surface du film ont été évalués.

First we can study the influence of the substrate on defects structure, and perform X-Rays diffraction in combining transmission and reflexion setup. Second by mixing the liquid crystal with gold nanoparticles (NPs), we provide anisotropy to the NPs self-assembly and to their optical properties, tunable under light polarization. At low NPs concentration, we create chains of individual nanoparticles trapped within smectic dislocations, parallel to each other and aligned along the defects. Inside a chain, depending on concentration NPs can be isolated or electromagnetically coupled. At high enough concentration , this leads to anisotropic properties of the collective localized surface plasmon resonance as large as 40 nm. Then the linear assembly turn into two dimensional organization of the GNPs, with dense packing along the defects and an anisotropy of the optical properties remains.Concerning pure liquid crystal matrix, we are strengthening the hypothesis of a structure made of a rotating grain boundary but with an eccentric curvature center.We identify two areas being able to trap the NPs: a preferential site should be one dislocation close to the substrate, without disorder induced by the presence of the NPs; a second site should be an assembly of dislocation localized on top of the rotating grain boundary close to the air interface, which reconstructs depending on the NPs concentration. International audience; We report on the successful attempt to synthesize thermoresponsive nanodiamonds hybrid microgels through a straightforward method. Resulting microgels exhibit smart properties, as the reversible collapsing of the structures when raising the temperature, with embedded nanodiamonds. Thanks to the colloidal and smart properties of the microgels, nanoscaled 2D self-assembled arrays of nanodiamonds with varying inter-particle distances were realized, without any lithographic processes, as an illustration of the promising properties of these novel diamond-based microgels. Such assemblies can constitute a first step toward a bottom–up elaboration of innovative diamond-based devices.

With the recent development of chemical synthesis in colloidal suspension, new photosensitizers with high surface area have been considered in this thesis to support redox reactions induced by light. This work is therefore in the scope of finding new energy sources to meet the problems posed by the depletion of fossil fuels. Quantum nanorods with a core@shell composition and gold nanorods were synthesized. Their shape anisotropy permits to assemble them in liquid crystal phases. Thanks to an original method of drying, hierarchical assemblies were obtained, which is promising to perform photoredox reactions on these assemblies thereafter. Furthermore, a natural catalyst, a hydrogenase was successfully grafted onto the nanocrystals and studied in electrochemistry. These systems would improve the performance of biofuel cells., Grâce au récent développement des synthèses chimiques en suspension colloïdale, de nouveaux photosensibilisateurs possédant une grande surface spécifique ont été envisagés dans cette thèse pour supporter des réactions d'oxydoréduction induite par la lumière. Ce travail s'inscrit donc dans la recherche de nouvelles sources d'énergie pour répondre aux problèmes inhérents à l'appauvrissement des énergies fossiles. Ainsi des nanobâtonnets quantiques de composition cœur@coquille et des nanobâtonnets d'or ont été synthétisés. Leur anisotropie de forme permet également de les assembler dans des phases cristal liquides. Grâce à une méthode de séchage originale, des assemblages hiérarchiques ont été obtenus, ce qui est prometteur pour réaliser des réactions de photocatalyses sur ces assemblages par la suite. Par ailleurs, un catalyseur naturel, une hydrogénase, a été greffée avec succès sur les nanocristaux et étudié en électrochimie. Ces systèmes permettraient d'améliorer les performances des biopiles à combustibles.

Oleosomes are discrete organelles filled with neutral lipids surrounded by a protein-embedded phospholipid monolayer. Their simple yet robust structure, as well as their amenability to biological, chemical, and physical processing, can be exploited for various biotechnology applications. In this study, we report facile biosynthesis of functionalized oleosomes within oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, through expression of oleosin fusion proteins. By fusing a cDNA clone of a sesame oleosin with either the coding sequence of a red fluorescent protein mCherry or a cellulosomal scaffolding protein cohesin from Clostridium cellulolyticum, these oleosin-fusion proteins were efficiently expressed and specifically targeted to and anchored on the surface of the oleosomes within the Y. lipolytica cells. The engineered oleosomes can be easily separated from the Y. lipolytica cell extract via floating centrifugation and both mCherry and cohesin domains are shown to be functional. Upon sonication, the engineered Yarrowia oleosomes exhibit a mean diameter of 200300nm and are found to be highly stable. The feasibility of co-displaying multiple proteins on the Yarrowia oleosomes was demonstrated by incubating cohesin-displaying oleosomes with different dockerin-fusion proteins. Based on this strategy, engineered oleosomes with both cell-targeting and reporting activities were created and shown to be functional. Taken together, the Yarrowia oleosome surface display system in which oleosin serves as an efficient membrane anchor motif shows great promise as a simple platform for creating tunable nanoparticles. Motivated by nucleation and molecular aggregation in physical, chemical and biological settings, we present a thorough analysis of the general problem of stochastic self-assembly of a fixed number of identical particles in a finite volume. We derive the Backward Kolmogorov equation (BKE) for the cluster probability distribution. From the BKE we study the distribution of times it takes for a single maximal cluster to be completed, starting from any initial particle configuration. In the limits of slow and fast self-assembly, we develop analytical approaches to calculate the mean cluster formation time and to estimate the first assembly time distribution. We find, both analytically and numerically, that faster detachment can lead to a shorter mean time to first completion of a maximum-sized cluster. This unexpected effect arises from a redistribution of trajectory weights such that upon increasing the detachment rate, paths that take a shorter time to complete a cluster become more likely., Comment: 18 pages, 9 Figures

International audience; For Ge nanodots ∼20 nm in diameter grown by annealing a thin amorphous Ge layer deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on a mesoporous TiO2 layer on Si(001), photoluminescence (PL) was observed as a wide near-infrared band near 800 meV. Using a tight binding theoretical model, the energy-dependent PL spectrum was transformed into a dependence on dot size. The average dot size determined the peak energy of the PL band and its shape depended on the size distribution, including bandgap enlargement due to quantum confinement. Combining the dot sample PL with an established dependence of emission efficiency on dot diameter, it was possible to derive a dot size distribution and compare it with results obtained independently from atomic force microscopy.

The drug targeting strategy aims not only to reduce the amount of administered drugs, but also to improve the benefit/risk ratio for the patient. Specific cellular delivery is raised while toxic effects caused by non specific delivery are weakened.To be fully efficient various vectors have been proposed, which are not only able to encapsulate the therapeutic molecules, but are also meant to interact efficiently with target cells. From this point of view, polymer nanoparticles are interesting objects for specifically targeting cells because of a unique combination of a nanometric size and the possibility to considerably modulate their physico-chemical properties.To this day the influence of the morphology of micro- and nanoparticles on their biodistribution is mostly unknown. However only a few studies suggest that the shapeof objects introduced in the body has a major influence on their fate in fluids[1], in vitro [2], and in vivo. Thus the observation of micro-organisms shows that shape not only influences their displacement, but also their capacity to interact with cells and the capture by macrophages.Understanding, at the micro- and nanometric levels the influence of shape on the interaction between particles and cells presents an undeniable scientific andpharmaceutical interest. Within this framework, the objective of our project is toidentify the different mechanisms or phenomena that the shape might impact, and to try to quantify their significance. More and more studies on the fabrication of micro and nanoparticles are emerging, but almost no data referred to the influence of shape on the behavior of these objects.To realize this study, we focused on producing non spherical particles of controlledshape and surface, either by auto-assembly of copolymers of poly(gamma-benzyl-Lglutamate)or by deformation of spherical nanoparticles. Then we studied the influence of shape on the in vitro interactions with characterized surfaces throughsurface plasmon resonance, on the interactions with cells (Human umbilical veinendothelial cells, HUVEC), and on the in vivo fate of the particles. All these elements demonstrated that the morphology of micro- and nanoparticles must be considered as a major factor to modulate their in vivo fate., La vectorisation est une stratégie pharmaceutique qui consiste non seulement à réduire les quantités de principe actif administrées, mais aussi à améliorer le rapport bénéfice/risque pour le patient. Pour être le plus efficace possible, différents vecteurs ont été proposés, non seulement capables d’encapsuler des molécules thérapeutiques, mais aussi d’interagir efficacement avec les cellules cibles. De ce point de vue, les nanoparticules polymères sont des objets intéressants pour cibler de manière spécifique certaines cellules, grâce à la combinaison unique d’une taille nanométrique et de la possibilité de moduler considérablement leurs propriétés physico-chimiques.A ce jour, l’influence de la morphologie des micro- et nanoparticules sur leur biodistribution est quasiment inconnue. Cependant, les rares études sur ce sujet suggèrent que la forme des objets introduits dans le corps a une influence majeure sur leur devenir dans les fluides [1], in vitro [2], et in vivo. De plus en plus d’études sur la fabrication de micro- et nanoparticules de formes originales émergent, mais quasiment aucune donnée ne fournit d’indication sur l’influence de la forme sur le comportement de ces objets.Pour mener à bien ce travail, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la production de particules non sphériques de formes et surfaces contrôlées, soit par une méthode d’auto-assemblage de copolymères de poly(gamma-benzyle-L-glutamate), soit par la déformation de particules sphériques. Enfin nous avons étudié l’influence in vitro de la forme sur les interactions avec des surfaces caractérisées, par résonance plasmonique de surface, sur les interactions avec des cellules (Cellules endothéliales humaines du cordon ombilical, HUVEC), et l’influence de la forme sur le devenir in vivo de ces particules. Tous ces éléments ont permis de démontrer que la forme des micro- et nanoparticules doit être considérée comme un facteur majeur pour moduler leur devenir in vivo.

International audience; Poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(ethyl acrylate) amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The controlled character of the polymerization was confirmed by kinetic studies, evolution of number-average molecular weight and polydispersity index with conversion: Various block copolymers with different PEA/PEO molar ratio were synthesized and their self-assembling properties in aqueous medium were studied by fluorescence measurements, static light scattering (SLS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were determined by pyrene fluorescence analysis. The CMC was shown to decrease as the hydrophobic (PEA) block length increases. SLS and DLS allowed the determination of the aggregation numbers (N-agg) and hydrodynamic radii (R-h) of the core-shell micelles formed in water. Both N-agg and R-h exhibit a monotonic increase as a function of the PEA block length. TEM and cryo-TEM micrographs of the ! micelles showed spherical objects with a low polydispersity of sizes. The micelles formed in water are in a thermodynamic equilibrium and the aggregation number of the micelles was shown to vary with the temperature.

International audience; Engineering the spectral properties of quantum dots can be achieved by a control of the quantum dots organization on a substrate. Indeed, many applications of quantum dots as LEDs are based on the realization of a 3D architecture of quantum dots. In this contribution, we present a systematic study of the quantum dot organization obtained on different chemically modified substrates. By varying the chemical affinity between the quantum dots and the substrate, the quantum dot organization is strongly modified from the 2D monolayer to the 3D aggregates. Then the photoluminescence of the different obtained samples has been systematically studied and correlated with the quantum dot film organization. We clearly show that the interaction between the substrate and the quantum dot must be stronger than the quantum dot–quantum dot interaction to avoid 3D aggregation and that these organization strongly modified the photoluminescence of the film rather than intrinsic changes of the quantum dot induced by pure surface chemistry.

International audience; Hydrogen titanate nanowires were prepared by hydrothermal method in 10 M NaOH followed by ion-exchanging process. Titanate nanowire thin films were successfully obtained by spray Layer-by-Layer (spray LbL) method within a short time. Due to the good dispersion state of the nanowires in an aqueous suspension and their linear morphology, titanate nanowires effectively adsorbed on the glass substrate. As a reference, TiO2-anatase nanoparticle thin films were also prepared by spray LbL method

International audience; We report on the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) stabilized by a layer of mercapto and/or hydroxyl bola palmitic acid-tetrabutyl ammonium salts (TBAOH) which form nanosomes in water. Mixing both bola fatty acids in water in various proportions allowed to tune the nanoparticle diameter from 1 to 10 nm using NaBH4 as a reductor. Those nanoparticles could be phase transferred to dichloromethane by adding a more hydrophobic counter-ion than TBAOH, its derivative with octyl chains (TOAOH). Finally, we used those AuNP to formulate emulsions, the stability of which was followed as a function of particle size and time. The emulsions were stable but creamed after several hours. We conclude that bola fatty acid nanosomes are then good candidates to synthesize gold nanoparticles dispersed either in water, organic solvents and emulsions.

Amino silane salts of myristic acid are shown to exhibit a broad polymorphism forming very stable vesicles, a gel of elongated fibers, and well-dispersed submicrometric flat truncated lozenges.

The synthesis of a bis-zwitterionic lamellar hybrid material containing ammonium carboxylate groups is described. Cation-exchange properties of this material towards transition metal and lanthanide ions were studied as well as the regeneration and reuse of the material.

International audience; We report the STM observation of single diarylethene derivatives (DD) embedded into alkylthiol Self Assembled Monolayers (SAM) on Au(111). Telegraph noise in the data shows that the molecular conductance oscillates between two states. Comparing our results to the ones obtained by other teams observing conductance flickering with systems in the same geometry, we relate the two observed states to the two isomeric configurations of the molecule under study.

This study investigates the growth of self-assembled polyelectrolyte films with strong polyacid (poly(styrene sulfonate), PSS and a weak polybase (poly(allylamine hydrochloride), PAH at pH 9. Addressing the deposit of the first 3 bilayers, we focus on the successive adsorption isotherms, the effect of maintaining a constant pH, the charge balance and the counterions co-adsorption in the successive steps. We also present stepwise AFM images of the film grown on a silica wafer, showing a very heterogeneous morphology with bumps and valleys, totally unlike the expected regular superposition of bi-dimensional polymer layers. Finally, a sketch of the growth mechanism is proposed, featuring most of the experimental observations in the study.

Polystyrene is a brittle material at room temperature. Blending with a styrene/butadiene tapered block copolymer produces a nanostructured material which is tough and transparent. These copolymers are formed by a two step anionic polymerization to give the following sequence, polystyrene-b-(polybutadiene-tap-polystyrene)-b-polystyrene, S1-(B/S)tap-S2. Structuration and properties of pure copolymers and blends with polystyrene strongly depend on the asymmetry between S1 and S2 styrene blocks and the presence of the tapered block. The asymmetry and shape of the tapered profile have been determined by following the monomer conversion during model syntheses. The asymmetry is found to be responsible for a shift of the phase diagram towards higher styrene composition. Modelling the dynamic mechanical analysis of extruded copolymers has allowed us to validate the effect of the tapered block. It enlarges the interphase and increases the volume of soft phase. Blending with different high molecular weight polystyrenes under shear produces a transparent nanostructured material. The high viscosity of the matrix leads to a fine dispersion of the copolymer even if the components are immiscible. Upon cooling, the system is trapped in a non equilibrium state. In traction at room temperature, the strain at break of the blends increases abruptly at a critical volume fraction of copolymer, which varies with the molecular architecture of the latter. A universal curve is obtained when mechanical properties are presented as a function of the fraction of amount of soft phase.; Cette étude porte sur le renforcement du polystyrène qui a un comportement fragile à température ambiante. Le mélange avec un copolymère styrène/butadiène à gradient de composition permet d'obtenir un matériau nanostructuré plus tenace, qui conserve sa transparence. Ces copolymères de type polystyrène-b-(polybutadiène-grad-polystyrène)-b-polystyrène (noté S1-(B/S)grad-S2) sont synthétisés en deux étapes par voie anionique. L'asymétrie entre les blocs S1 et S2 et le gradient de composition ont une influence déterminante sur la structuration et les propriétés, en pur ou en mélange. Des synthèses modèles avec mesures de conversion ont permis de déterminer les rapports de réactivité de la synthèse et d'évaluer l'asymétrie et la forme du gradient composition. L'asymétrie est responsable d'un décalage du diagramme de phase vers des compositions plus riches en styrène. Par une modélisation des propriétés mécaniques aux faibles déformations, il est montré que le bloc gradient a pour effet d'élargir l'interphase et augmenter le volume de phase molle. Sous cisaillement, le mélange avec différents polystyrènes de haute masse donne des matériaux nanostructurés transparents malgré l'immiscibilité vérifiée de ces systèmes. La viscosité élevée de la matrice permet de disperser finement le copolymère. Le système est piégé dans un état hors équilibre lors du refroidissement. En traction, les mélanges présentent une augmentation nette de l'élongation à la rupture pour une fraction critique de copolymère qui dépend de l'architecture de ce dernier. A new class of hexabenzocoronene is put forth that has its core severely distorted out of planarity into a corrugated structure. When substituted with four alkoxy side chains, this material self-assembles into infinitely long columns through stacking (see picture) and acts as an active layer in field-effect transistors. © 2005 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Cones are a very rare form of supramolecular self-assembly. It is shown that mixing of an unsymmetrical bola-fatty acid and a diamine (catanionic system) in dilute solutions can produce aggregates having a conical shape. These assemblies are made of frozen unsymmetrical monolayers in which bolas are arranged on a regular hexagonal lattice. Cones are stabilized by the introduction of pentagonal or n-gonal defects in the bola-lattice which yields the quantification of the cone apex angle according to the Euler theorems. The formation of cones represents a novel route for lipid and surfactant systems to minimize the edge energy of a flat membrane.

The formation of two-dimensional self-assemblies of ordered, packed gold nanoparticles is described. The nanoparticles were coated by a diamide thiol ligand (DASH) that ensured the connection of the nanoparticles through hydrogen bonds. The stability of the colloidal solutions is discussed with respect to the stability of the normal dodecanethiol-coated particles.

Microemulsion droplets (oil in water stabilized by a surfactant film) are progressively decorated with increasing amounts of poly ethylene- oxide (PEO) chains anchored in the film by the short aliphatic chain grafted at one end of the PEO chain . The evolution of the bending elasticity of the surfactant film with increasing decoration is deduced from the evolution in size and polydispersity of the droplets as reflected by small angle neutron scattering. The optimum curvature radius decreases while the bending rigidity modulus remains practically constant. The experimental results compare well with the predictions of a model developed for the bending properties of a curved film decorated by non-adsorbing polymer chains, which takes into account, the finite curvature of the film and the free diffusion of the chains on the film., Comment: 30 June 2004

International audience; Tb3Sc2Al3O12 has been grown as a crystal showing high Faraday effect. A self-organized pattern, of directionally formed eutectic, has been observed at the edge of the Tb3Sc2Al3O12 microcrystals grown by the micro-pulling down method. Binary (Tb3Sc2Al3O12/TbScO3) and ternary eutectic (depending on the pulling rate and the composition) are formed at the edges showing a highly packed pseudo-hexagonal spot pattern (over large areas) in the cross section and a rod pattern (length up to 200 μm) in the longitudinal section. The size of the spot pattern can be controlled by the pulling rate. The observed arrays can be suitable for various photonic devices.
