Abstract: We report on our realization of a high power holmium doped fiber laser, together with the validation of our numerical simulation of the laser. We first present the rare absolute measurements of the physical parameters that are mandatory to model accurately the laser-holmium interactions in our silica fiber. We then describe the realization of the clad-pumped laser, based on a triple-clad large mode area holmium (Ho) doped silica fiber. The output signal power is 90 W at 2120 nm, with an efficiency of about 50% with respect to the coupled pump power. This efficiency corresponds to the state of the art for clad-pumped Ho-doped fiber lasers in the 100 W power class. By comparing the experimental results to our simulation, we demonstrate its validity, and use it to show that the efficiency is limited, for our fiber, by the non-saturable absorption caused by pair induced quenching between adjacent holmium ions., 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; Large-Mode-Area (LMA) fibers are key elements in modern high power fiber lasers operating at 1 µm. LMA fibers are highly ytterbium-doped and require a fine control of the core refractive index (RI) close to the silica level. These low RI have been achieved with multi-component materials elaborated using a full-vapor phase Surface Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (SPCVD) process, enabling the fabrication of large core diameter preforms (up to 4 millimeters). Following the technology demonstration, presented in Photonics West 2017, with results on 10/130 (core-to-clad diameters (in µm) ratio) fibers, this paper aims to present updated results obtained for double-clad 11/130, 20/130 and 20/400 LMA fibers, with numerical apertures at, respectively, 0.08 and 0.065. Abstract: The main purpose of this work is to better understand the mechanisms of interaction between pharmaceutical relevant molecules and model membranes in order to facilitate the synthesis of new molecules, more efficient against their molecular target and less toxic for Humans. In the first part, we studied the interactions occuring between these models and antifungal polyene molecules. It has been reported that these molecules interacted preferentially with sterols. We specifically focused on Nystatin and Amphotericin B, two polyenes with a very similar chemical structure and presently used as a treatment against fungi and molds. Using different kind of model membranes, we showed PhosphatidylEthanolamine could have a very important role in the mechanism of action of these molecules. In the second part of this work, we studied the inhibition of the formation of a cristal called « hemozoïn », which is growing during the life cycle of the parasite responsible of malaria. This cristal is made of hematin, a toxic by-product of the degradation of hemoglobin, the main source of amino-acids for the parasite. Hematin and the inhibition of the growth of this cristal is a ideal molecular target to combat malaria. Chloroquine, mefloquine and new mefloquine-derivatives were studied. The study of the inhibition of the formation of the cristal was done using Langmuir monolayers as a biosensor. We showed that stereochemistry, but also lipophilicity of these compounds, are important parameters for the synthesis of more efficient antimalarial molecules.; L’objection générale de ces travaux est de comprendre les mécanismes d’interaction de molécules d’intérêt avec les membranes afin de faciliter la synthèse de molécules plus efficaces contre leurs cibles tout en étant moins toxique pour l’Homme. Dans la première partie de ces travaux, nous avons étudié les interactions entre ces modèles membranaires et les polyènes antifongiques, connus pour interagir avec les stérols des membranes plasmiques. Nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés à la Nystatine et à l’Amphotéricine B, deux molécules de structure chimique très proche et actuellement utilisées dans l’industrie pharmaceutique. L’utilisation de différents modèles membranaires et de techniques adaptées a montré que la PhosphatidylEthanolamine avait très vraisemblablement un rôle primordial dans le mécanisme d’interaction de ces molécules avec les membranes. Dans la deuxième partie de ces travaux, nous nous sommes intéressés à l’inhibition de la formation du cristal d’hémozoïne formé lors de la croissance du parasite responsable du paludisme. Ce cristal est formé d’hématine, hautement toxique pour le parasite. L’hématine et l’inhibition de la formation de l’hémozoïne constituent une cible moléculaire idéale pour combattre cette maladie. La chloroquine, la méfoquine et de nouveaux inhibiteurs dérivés de la méfloquine ont été utilisés. L’étude de l’inhibition de la formation du cristal s’est faite en utilisant des monocouches de Langmuir, servant ainsi de biocapteurs. Ces travaux ont montré que l’énantiomérie, mais aussi la lipophilicité des nouveaux composés antipaludiques sont des paramètres importants en vue de la synthèse de molécules plus efficaces.

Abstract: International audience; Employing a wide range of critical perspectives and new comparative contexts, Flann O’Brien: Contesting Legacies breaks new ground in O’Brien scholarship by testing a number of popular commonplaces about this Irish (post-) Modernist author. Challenging the narrative that Flann O’Brien wrote two good novels and then retired to the inferior medium of journalism (as Myles na gCopaleen), the collection engages with overlooked shorter, theatrical, and non-fiction works and columns (‘John Duffy’s Brother’, ‘The Martyr’s Crown’, ‘Two in One’) alongside At Swim-Two-Birds, The Third Policeman, and An Béal Bocht. The depth and consistency of O’Nolan’s comic inspiration that emerges from this scholarly engagement with his broader body of work underlines both the imperative and opportunity of reassessing O’Brien’s literary legacy. Challenging the critical standard of O’Brien as a provincial writer, these essays reveal his writing as a space that uniquely complicates the old lines between stay-at-home conservatism and international experimentalism. Renegotiating O’Brien’s place in the European Avant-Garde alongside tensions closer to home – Republicanism, the Gaelic tradition, the Dublin literary scene – the collection reveals as outdated prejudice the dismissal of his talent as a matter of localised interest. Finally, the contributors excavate O’Nolan’s oeuvre as fertile territory for a broad range of critical perspectives by confronting some of the more complex ideological positions tested in his writing. Employing perspectives from genetic criticism and cultural materialism to post-modernism and deconstruction, the essays gathered in this volume address with new critical rigour the author’s gender politics, his language politics, his parodies of nationalism, his ideology of science, and his treatment of the theme of justice.

Abstract: Ion implantation is an interesting method to dope semiconducting materials such as zinc oxide provided that the implantation-induced defects can be subsequently removed. Nitrogen implantation followed by anneals under O2 were carried out on zinc oxide nanowires in the same conditions as in a previous study on bulk ZnO [J. Appl.Phys. 109, 023513 (2011)], allowing a direct comparison of the defect recovery mechanisms. Transmission electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence were carried out to assess the effects of nitrogen implantation and of subsequent anneals on the structural and optical properties of ZnO nanowires. Defect recovery is shown to be more effective in nanowires compared with bulk material due to the proximity of free surfaces. Nevertheless, the optical emission of implanted and annealed nanowires deteriorated compared to as-grown nanowires, as also observed for unimplanted and annealed nanowires. This is tentatively attributed to the dissociation of excitons in the space charge region induced by O2 adsorption on the nanowire surface., Comment: 5 pages

Abstract: Plastic relaxation of the misfit stress in core-shell semi-conducting nanowires can lead to structural defects, detrimental to applications. Core-shell Zn{0.7}Mg{0.3}O/ZnO quantum well heterostructures were deposited on ZnO nanowires. Strain along the a and c axes of the wurtzite structure is relaxed through the glide of dislocation half-loops from the free surfaces, within pyramidal and prismatic planes. Some half-loops are closed up in the barriers to accommodate the misfit at two consecutive interfaces of the quantum well stack. Abstract: The macro-benthic communities of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, located in the Norman-Breton Gulf (English Channel) along the French coast, are mainly dominated by filter-feeders which include cultivated species (oysters and mussels). The decline in shellfish farms production and the significant spreading of the invasive slipper-limpet Crepidula fornicata have conducted scientists and stakeholders to undertake a reflexion on the trophic balance between cultivated and wild (native or invasive non-native) filterfeeders. An ecological model of the bay was developed, coupling a 2D hydro-sedimentary model along with biological models for primary production and filter-feeder growth. The objectives of the project were first to provide indicators to stakeholders on the future evolution of the trophic resource taking in account environmental modifications and human pressure, and establish with them the scenarios to be developed by the model. To accomplish these objectives different focus groups were organised between scientists and stakeholders. Based on these exchanges scenarios on shellfish practices, watershed runoffs and Crepidula fornicata spreading, were investigated through numerical modeling tools. Then results of the models were presented to 6 stakeholders' focus groups and a social scientist has analysed first the interaction between scientists and stakeholders, second the perception of the models by the stakeholders and the ideas of stakeholders concerning the environmental problems face within the Bay.
