Abstract

International audience; Abstract The recent discovery of superconductivity in paramagnetic UTe 2 turns spotlight on a serious candidate for spin-triplet state. To draw a complete picture of the superconducting state in UTe 2 precise knowledge of the electronic properties of the 5 f states of Uranium is missing. We report on x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism experiments performed at the U M 4,5 edges at 2.7 K. At ambient pressure the 5 f electron count is found to be in-between 2.6 and 2.8. Partial delocalization of the 5 f electrons is further confirmed by the reduced value of the U orbital to spin magnetic moment ratio. The 5 f count is reduced by as large as 7 percent at the transition to a magnetically ordered state at P c ≈ 1.5 GPa. At pressures above 4 GPa, the 5 f count increases back towards U 3+ in the tetragonal phase. The observed “valence instabilities” and their interplay with magnetism seem to be important ingredients to understand the electronic structure in UTe 2 in different phases.

Abstract

Achieving large-scale growth of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials with high Curie temperature (TC) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is highly desirable for the development of ultra-compact magnetic sensors and magnetic memories. In this context, van der Waals (vdW) Cr2Te3 appears as a promising candidate. Bulk Cr2Te3 exhibits strong PMA and a TC of 180 K. Moreover, both PMA and TC might be adjusted in ultrathin films by engineering composition, strain, or applying an electric field. In this work, we demonstrate the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of vdW heterostructures of five-monolayer quasi-freestanding Cr2Te3 on three classes of 2D materials: graphene (semimetal), WSe2 (semiconductor) and Bi2Te3 (topological insulator). By combining structural and chemical analysis down to the atomic level with ab initio calculations, we confirm the single crystalline character of Cr2Te3 films on the 2D materials with sharp vdW interfaces. They all exhibit PMA and TC close to the bulk Cr2Te3 value of 180 K. Ab initio calculations confirm this PMA and show how its strength depends on strain. Finally, Hall measurements reveal a strong anomalous Hall effect, which changes sign at a given temperature. We theoretically explain this effect by a sign change of the Berry phase close to the Fermi level. This transition temperature depends on the 2D material in proximity, notably as a consequence of charge transfer. Abstract

Alignment of linear molecules is efficiently induced by strong linearly polarized laser pulses. In the case of short pulses with respect to molecular rotation, periodic alignment appears in field-free conditions after the extinction of the field. This manuscript presents three techniques where the value of allows to quantify alignment without molecular dissociation nor additional alignment. They use a weak time-delayed probe pulse which experiences the optical properties of an aligned sample and shows modification of its characteristics. The first of them measures a depolarization due to the birefringence of the sample. The second one is based on the defocusing produced by the spatial distribution of aligned molecules, and thus, the gradient of the refractive index. The last technique is based on the creation of a transient grating at the crossing of two intenses laser pulses. This grating leads to the diffraction of a weak probe pulse., L'alignement de molécules linéaires est induit efficacement par des impulsions laser intenses polarisées linéairement. Si ces impulsions sont de courtes durées par rapport à la rotation des molécules, un alignement périodique apparaît après l'extinction du champ. Ce manuscrit présente trois méthodes permettant de le quantifier à l'aide de la grandeur sans pour autant détruire les molécules ni modifier l'alignement initial. Elles nécessitent une impulsion de faible intensité décalée temporellement dont les caractéristiques vont être modifiées par les propriétés optiques du milieu liées à l'alignement moléculaire. La première technique mesure une dépolarisation due à la biréfringence du milieu. La seconde s'appuie sur la défocalisation qui s'explique par une variation spatiale de l'alignement, donc un gradient de l'indice de réfraction. La dernière passe par la création d'un réseau d'indice à l'intersection de deux impulsions intenses, qui va provoquer la diffraction de la sonde.

Abstract

We investigate the growth of the recently demonstrated composite material composed of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes capped by few graphene layers. We show that the carbon nanotubes grow epitaxially under the few graphene layers. By using a catalyst and gaseous carbon precursor different from those used originally we establish that such unconventional growth mode is not specific to a precise choice of catalyst-precursor couple. Furthermore, the composite can be grown using catalyst and temperatures compatible with CMOS processing (T < 450\degree C)., 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In the present work we have investigated the transport properties in a number of Si/SiGe samples with square antidot lattices of different periods. In samples with lattice periods equal to 700 nm and 850 nm we have observed the conventional low-field commensurability magnetoresistance peaks consistent with the previous observations in GaAs/AlGaAs and Si/SiGe samples with antidot lattices. In samples with a 600 nm lattice period a new series of well-developed magnetoresistance oscillations has been found beyond the last commensurability peak which are supposed to originate from periodic skipping orbits encircling an antidot with a particular number of bounds., Comment: To appear in EuroPhys. Abstract

We report an experimental study of the quantum corrections to the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall coefficient of a low mobility, high density two-dimensional two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5 K - 110 K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It was therefore possible to study the crossover region for the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect.

Abstract

We have observed a large positive quasi-classical magneto-resistance (MR) in a high mobility 2D electron gas in AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. The magneto-resistance is non-saturating and increases with magnetic field as $\rho_{xx}\sim B^{\alpha} (\alpha=0.9-1.2)$. In antidot lattices a non-monotonic MR is observed. We show that in both cases this MR can be qualitatively described in terms of the theory recently advanced by Polyakov et al (PRB, 64, 205306 (2001)). Their prediction is that such behavior as we observe may be the consequence of a concurrent existence of short and long range scattering potentials., Comment: 7 jan 2004

Abstract

International audience; We have studied the multiphoton ionization of xenon atoms by 160 fs pulses at intensities of 531012 and 1.331013 W/cm2 and present photoelectron kinetic energy and angular distribution spectra measured with a photoelectron imaging spectrometer. A noncollinear optical parametric amplifier allows us to tune the wavelength of the laser pulse over a range between 500 and 700 nm. Resonant and nonresonant processes as well as channel switching effects have been observed in this intensity and wavelength regime. Mainly resonant s5+1d-photon ionization via ns, nd, and nd8 Rydberg states was studied in the region of 505–602 nm. Resonance structures were found related to the two fine structure ionization channels Xe+ 2P3/2 and Xe+ 2P1/2. In addition the s6+1d-photon resonant ionization and nonresonant 5- and 6-photon processes could be studied.

Abstract

Rédigé par l'équipe scientifique du projet Kaiko; International audience; The Kaiko project was a French-Japanese cooperative scientific effort to investigate the structures and geodynamic processes in the deep trenches surrounding the Japanese islands. Seabeam mapping, as well as detailed geophysical investigation of eight selected areas in the Nankai, Suruga and Sagami Troughs and in the Japan Trench, including the trench triple junction, were performed in 1984. Twenty-seven manned dives, to a maximum depth of 6000 m, were made over five of these areas at carefully selected sites in 1985. The main results of the project are presented in this special issue together with a set of coloured bathymetric maps and block diagrams. They illustrate a great diversity of tectonic styles, from the turbidite-filled trenches of the Shikoku Basin with a well developed accretionary prism, to the much deeper Japan Trench with widespread evidence for large-scale slumping and erosion over the inner wall. Special insight has been gained into the processes involved in the subduction of seamounts and of volcanic ridges. Benthic communities, associated with chemosynthetic processes, were discovered at several locations during manned dives in the Nankai Trough as well as in the Japan Trench. They thus appear to be a common feature of deep-sea trenches. Thermal, geochemical and biogeochemical measurements, coupled with tectonic observations, indicate that they are related to overpressure fluid advections along zones of active surface deformation.
