This thesis aims to reconstruct the genealogy of the concept of empowerment. It examines the variability of its meanings as well as its potential for social transformation in the fields of social work, development, public policies in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, education and health.In the French health system, the diffusion and meanings of empowerment are analysed, both from the institutional point of view and from that of health professionals and health users, using a synchronic approach.The results highlight different conceptions of the relative importance of individual, collective and political responsibility for health.The analyses conducted reveal that the actors in therapeutic patient education have varying representations of the determinants of change in patients and their behaviour. According to the categories of individuals surveyed, this change can be more or less attributed to characteristics specific to the individual, to social, environmental and systemic factors., Cette thèse a l’ambition de reconstruire la généalogie du concept « empowerment ». Elle étudie la variabilité de ses significations ainsi que son potentiel de transformation sociale dans les champs du travail social, du développement, des politiques publiques dans les quartiers prioritaires, de l’éducation et de la santé.Dans le système de santé français, la diffusion et les significations de l'empowerment sont analysées, selon une approche synchronique, tant du point de vue institutionnel que de celui des professionnels et des usagers de la santé.Les résultats mettent en lumière des conceptions différentes quant à l’importance relative accordée à la responsabilité individuelle, collective et politique en matière de santé.Les analyses menées révèlent que les acteurs de l’éducation thérapeutique du patient ont des représentations variables des déterminants du changement des patients et de leurs conduites. Selon les catégories d’individus enquêtés, ce changement peut être plus ou moins attribué à des caractéristiques propres à l’individu, à des facteurs sociaux, environnementaux et systémiques.

Voluntas and the lexical field of the will: questions of polysemy and synonymy Voluntas is rare in preclassical Latin, with negative connotations. Far from being spontaneous creation, words with consonantal reduplication sometimes come from the repetition of a morpheme (NĒNĒ > nēnia), the reduction of a repeated imperative (LACTA LACTA > lalla) or the contraction of a compound (*MĀ-AMMA > mamma). Likewise, gemination can be the result of the assimilation of different consonants (*LAC-LA > lalla, ALMA > amma). When the origin of an expression is obscure, the analysis of its polysemy must lead to the primary meaning. In this sense, etymological study has allowed us to clarify the belonging to the lexical family of alere (‘raise, grow’) of several doubtful members and other unknown: amma ‘nurse’ and mamma ‘nurturing mother’., Loin d’être une création spontanée, les mots à redoublement consonantique proviennent parfois de la répétition d’un morphème (NENE > nēnia), de la réduction d’un impératif répété (LACTA LACTA > lalla) ou de la contraction d’un composé (*MA-AMMA > mamma). Word embedding representations generated by neural language models encode rich information about language and the world. In this thesis, we investigate the knowledge about word meaning encoded in embedding representations and propose methods to automatically enhance their quality. Our main focus is on contextual models which generate representations that capture the meaning of word usages in new contexts. These models have dominated the NLP and Computational Linguistics fields and open exciting new possibilities for lexical semantics research. The central axis of our research is the exploration of the knowledge about lexical polysemy encoded in word embedding models. We access this knowledge through usage similarity experiments and automatic substitute annotations assigned by the models to words in context. We study the representations produced by the models in their raw form, and explore the impact that their enrichment with external semantic knowledge has on their quality. We evaluate the representations intrinsically on the tasks of usage similarity estimation, word sense clusterability and polysemy level prediction. Additionally, we employ contextualised representations for detecting words’ semantic relationships, specifically addressing the relative intensity of scalar adjectives. Adopting an interpretation stance, we investigate the knowledge that the models encode about noun properties as expressed in their adjectival modifiers, and the entailment properties of adjective-noun constructions. Our experiments involve a wide range of contextualised models which we compare to models that produce static word representations. The majority of our analyses address English but we also test our assumptions and methodology in a multilingual setting which involves monolingual and multilingual models in other languages. Our results demonstrate that contextualised representations encode rich knowledge about word meaning and semantic relationships acquired during model training and further enriched with information from new contexts of use. We also find that the constructed semantic space encodes abstract semantic notions, such as the notion of adjective intensity, which can be useful for intrinsic lexical semantic analysis and in downstream applications. Our proposed methodology can be useful for exploring other intrinsic semantic properties of words and their semantic relationships in different languages, leading to a better understanding of the knowledge about language encoded in neural language models.; Les plongements de mots générés par les modèles de langue neuronaux encodent des informations riches sur la langue et le monde. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions les connaissances sur le sens des mots encodées dans ces plongements lexicaux et proposons des méthodes automatiques pour en améliorer la qualité. Nous nous concentrons principalement sur les modèles contextuels qui génèrent des représentations capturant le sens d'occurrences de mots en contexte. Ces modèles ont dominé les domaines du Traitement Automatique des Langues (TAL) et de la linguistique computationnelle, et ouvrent de nouvelles possibilités intéressantes pour la recherche en sémantique lexicale. L'axe central de notre recherche est l'exploration des connaissances sur la polysémie lexicale encodées dans des modèles de plongements de mots. Nous accédons à ces connaissances par le biais d'expériences qui mesurent la similarité entre usages de mots, et en s'appuyant sur des annotations de substituts automatiquement attribuées par les modèles à des occurrences de mots en contexte. Nous étudions les représentations produites par les modèles sous leur forme brute, et explorons l'impact de leur enrichissement avec des connaissances sémantiques externes sur leur qualité. Nous évaluons les représentations intrinsèquement sur les tâches d'estimation de la similarité d'usages, de prédiction de la clusterabilité des sens des mots et de leur niveau de polysémie. De plus, nous utilisons des représentations contextualisées pour détecter des relations sémantiques entre les mots, plus spécifiquement en abordant l'intensité relative des adjectifs scalaires. Dans une perspective d'interprétation, nous étudions les connaissances que les modèles encodent sur les propriétés des substantifs telles qu'elles sont exprimées dans leurs modifieurs adjectivaux, ainsi que les propriétés d'implication caractérisant les constructions adjectif-substantif. Nos expériences explorent un large éventail de modèles contextualisés que nous comparons à des modèles qui génèrent des représentations statiques (non contextualisées) de mots. La majorité de nos analyses portent sur l'anglais mais nous testons également nos hypothèses et notre méthodologie en utilisant des modèles d’autres langues aussi bien qu'en utilisant des modèles multilingues. Nos résultats démontrent que les représentations contextualisées encodent des connaissances riches sur le sens des mots et leurs relations sémantiques, qui sont acquises lors de l’entraînement des modèles et qui sont, par la suite, enrichies par des informations provenant de nouveaux contextes d'utilisation. Nous constatons également que l'espace sémantique construit par ces modèles encode des notions sémantiques abstraites, comme la notion d'intensité des adjectifs, qui peuvent être utiles aussi bien pour l'analyse de la sémantique lexicale que dans des applications réelles. En outre, la méthodologie proposée peut être utile pour explorer d'autres propriétés sémantiques intrinsèques des mots ainsi que leurs relations sémantiques dans différentes langues, conduisant à une meilleure compréhension des connaissances sur le langage encodées dans les modèles de langue neuronaux.

This dissertation reports computational accounts of resolving word-level polysemy in a lesser-studied language—Korean. Postpositions, which are characterized as multiple form-function mapping and thus polysemous in nature, pose a challenge to automatic analysis and model performance in identifying their functions. In this project, I enhance the existing word-level embedding classification models (Positive Pointwise Mutual Information and Singular Value Decomposition; Skip-Gram and Negative Sampling) with the consideration of context window, and introduce a sentence-level embedding classification model (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)) under the scheme of Distributional Semantic Modeling. I then develop two visualization systems that show (i) relationships of the postpositions and their co- occurring words for word-level embedding models, and (ii) clusters between sentences for the sentence-level embedding model. These visualization systems have an advantage to better understand how these classification models classify the intended functions of these postpositions. Results show that, whereas the performance of the word-level embedding models is modulated by the size of training corpora containing specific functions of the postpositions, the sentence-level embedding model performs in a stable way (i.e., less affected by the corpus size) and simulates how humans recognize the polysemy involving Korean adverbial postpositions more appropriately than the word-level embedding models do., Ce projet de thèse présente des comptes rendus informatiques de la résolution de la polysémie au niveau des mots dans une langue peu étudiée—le Coréen. Les postpositions, qui se caractérisent par une correspondance forme-fonction multiple et qui sont donc polysémiques par nature, posent un défi à l'analyse automatique et à la performance des modèles pour identifier leurs fonctions. Dans ce projet, je consolide les modèles existants de classification de vecteur au niveau du mot (Positive Pointwise Mutual Information et Singular Value Decomposition; Skip-Gram and Negative Sampling) en tenant compte du Window du contexte, et j'introduis un modèle de classification de vecteur au niveau de la phrase (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)) dans le cadre de la modélisation sémantique distributionnelle. Par ailleurs, je développe deux systèmes de visualisation qui montrent (i) les relations entre les postpositions et leurs mots co-occurrents pour les modèles de vecteur au niveau du mot, et (ii) les clusters entre les phrases pour le modèle de vecteur au niveau de la phrase. Ces systèmes de visualisation ont l'avantage de mieux comprendre comment ces modèles de classification classent les fonctions prévues de ces postpositions. Les résultats montrent que, alors que la performance des modèles de vecteur au niveau du mot est modulée par la taille des corpus d'entraînement contenant les fonctions spécifiques des postpositions, le modèle de vecteur au niveau des phrases est stable (i.e., moins affecté par la taille du corpus) et simule la façon dont les humains reconnaissent la polysémie des postpositions adverbiales coréennes de façon plus appropriée que les modèles de vecteur au niveau du mot.

The coexistence and confrontation of agricultural and food models are an issue that is evincing much interest from the media and the political and professional fields. It is also an active area of research, a fact which led to a call for articles and the publication of a special issue. This article introduces and analyzes the 9 articles selected and published in 2020, and characterizes the diversity of the associated research (issues, fields, disciplines). After shedding light on the polysemy involved, as well as the fundamentals of the concept of agricultural and food model mobilized by the authors, we examine how they consider situations of coexistence. We identify three epistemological postures that reflect the contrasting positions of the authors vis-à-vis knowledge, actors, and action: functionalist coexistence, coexistence based on power relations, and coexistence in a transition perspective. These studies encourage the development of new research perspectives, in particular in order to make progress in the theorization of the coexistence and confrontation of agricultural and food models.

International audience; Semic analysis was applied to the Latin vocabulary by C. Moussy in the 1990s in order to measure the differences in meaning of polysemic words. It has made a major contribution to the understanding of the Latin vocabulary, but it has also raised controversy, since the coexistence of several sememes may cast doubt on the unity of the signifié.; L'analyse sémique a été appliquée par C. Moussy au vocabulaire latin dans les années 1990 afin de mesurer les écarts de sens dans les polysèmes. Elle a constitué un apport important à la compréhension du lexique latin, mais elle a suscité des interrogations, car la coexistence de plusieurs sémèmes peut être considérée comme une remise en question du l'unité du signifié.

International audience; We have used the semic analysis as taught by C. Moussy in order to study the polysemy of the Latin noun forma which provides us with examples of the six types of semantic relationships inventoried by R. Martin and illustrated in C. Moussy’s works. These are narrowing of meaning, extension of meaning, metonymy, metaphor, strict polysemy and loose polysemy; to these we must also add homonymy. We illustrate these semantic relationships with examples taken from our study of forma to which we add some remarks on meanings and contextual variants.; Nous avons utilisé l’analyse sémique, enseignée par C. Moussy, pour étudier la polysémie complexe du latin forma, qui offre des exemples des six types de relations sémantiques inventoriées par R. Martin et illustrées par les travaux de C. International audience; The article explores the semantics of nouns of cultural artifacts, typical of Wolof society, such as the tam-tam or amulet. I propose fine semantic decompositions, formalized by pioneering lexicographical definitions in Natural Semantic Metalanguage of English and Wolof.My objective is to show that polysemy is a gradual semantic relationship, and that the multiplicity of denotations does not automatically lead to polysemy. In particular, I argue that different denotations can be triggered by combinations of the same artifact noun with verbs that denote different activities performed with the artifact. I thus distinguish polysemy from semantic ambivalence.After explaining the method of semantic decomposition used, the article successively examines the multiplicity of name denotations that refer to tams-tam, money and talismans in Wolof culture and language.; L'article explore la sémantique des noms des artefacts culturels, typiques de la société wolof, comme le tam-tam ou l'amulette.Je propose des décompositions sémantiques fines et pionnières, formalisées par des définitions lexicographiques dans le métalangage sémantique naturel de l'anglais et du Wolof.Mon objectif est de montrer que la polysémie est une relation sémantique progressive, et que la multiplicité des dénotations ne conduit pas automatiquement à la polysémie. Les ressources lexicales sont indispensables à l’enseignement explicite du lexique (Tremblay & Polguère, 2014). Pour un meilleur apprentissage, idéalement les outils utilisés en classe doivent rendre compte de la structure du lexique (un réseau d’unités interreliées) et doivent faciliter la mémorisation et la réactivation des mots du vocabulaire de l’apprenant (en particulier grâce aux relations entre les mots). Toutefois, force est de constater que, outre des dispositifs ludiques variés, les ressources numériques existantes sont encore très proches des ressources classiques. La notion de réseau lexical est peu exploitée et, globalement, peu d’enseignants connaissent des dispositifs issus de la recherche. Dans cet article, nous présentons ReSyf (Billami, François & Gala, 2018), une ressource lexicale accessible en ligne qui intègre les notions de polysémie, de synonymie et de complexité de lecture. Les exploitations possibles de ReSyf dans le domaine de la didactique du lexique et de la remédiation orthophonique ouvrent des possibilités nouvelles pour les apprentissages lexicaux en complément d’un travail sur le vocabulaire en contexte. Dans cette proposition, nous décrivons brièvement la ressource et une expérience de simplification de textes à l’aide de ReSyf. Ce dispositif a permis de mettre en place des tests de lecture avec du matériel adapté qui s’est avéré une aide temporaire efficace pour l’apprentissage de la lecture et du vocabulaire des apprenants, tous profils confondus. Lexical resources are essential to explicit teaching of vocabulary (Tremblay & Polguère, 2014). To enable stronger vocabulary learning, the tools used in the classrooms should show the structure of the lexicon (a network of lexical units) and assist the learners to memorize and to reactivate the meaning of the words that they already know (i.e. using the lexical relations among the words). However, in addition to a varied set of playful propositions, existing digital resources are still similar to classical devices. The notion of lexical network is not, or hardly ever exploited and very few teachers are aware of propositions coming from research. In this paper, we present ReSyf (Billami, François & Gala, 2018), a lexical resource available online based on the notions of polysemy, synonymy and reading complexity. ReSyf offers new possibilities for teaching vocabulary at school or speech therapy training, alongside with working with the vocabulary in context. In this proposition, we briefly describe the resource and an experience of text simplification using ReSyf. This experience enabled to propose reading tests with adapted reading material resulting in an efficient temporary device to improve reading, comprehension, and vocabulary learning for a variety of French learners.

Colloque en visio-conférence en raison des conditions sanitaires.; International audience; For both structural and cognitive reasons, natural languages are characterized by their plasticity, by the ease with which the representations borne by the units composing them are subject to change. Polysemy and polyreference are the general rule among languages. In English for example the word greens can refer to village commons, leafy vegetables or members of a political party. Inversely, different units can refer to the same thing, such as roe and caviar, or hepatitis and jaundice. There is no one-to-one relation between form and meaning, either within a language or across languages. For instance, in French, les verts ‘the greens’ refer to the members of a political party, to set game pawns or to a national football team. From this view point, variation within languages (polysemy, synonymy), echoes variation from language to language and raises the question of how it is possible to say “the same thing” differently and what is at stake in this variation. Whereas this plasticity in meaning ensures both the referential power of a language and a form of optimization for the system, it also entails another of language’s defining characteristics - ambiguity and its communicative corollary: misunderstandings. That communication remains nonetheless possible is because the factors of variation in language are submitted to processes of regulation and meaning stabilization. In this presentation, I will begin by attempting to highlight a certain number of variation factors at the level of the isolated (lexical) units. Semantic variation is considered as inherent to language structure and driven by common universal cognitive mechanisms which are accounted for by a dynamic conception of meaning construal. Units appear to be the seat of most variations, within and across languages, because meaning is construed in extremely varied ways according to common mechanisms which will be explored. Then I will try to show that in language activity, virtual units undergo certain operations whereby they are incorporated into utterances, and to highlight this different operations of the sentence level, which permit a certain stabilization in meaning but also occasion communicative failures. The discourse level is the seat of meaning construal mechanisms which contribute both to the general polysemy of lexical units and to the stabilization of their meaning within a particular utterance.My approach is entrenched in cognitive linguistics and proposes some new concepts or tools, such as « the depth dimension of language », « meaning attractors » and « semantic shift », that I found useful for describing both the variation at the level of linguistic units, the stabilization and progressive construal of meaning in utterance, and also the possibility to activate several meanings of the same word in a single utterance. This sort of semantic layering is the source of misunderstanding but also the mainspring of rhetoric, puns, or advertising. Depending whether, in communication, the speaker is the driver or the passenger of this referential power of language and its plasticity in meaning.

Observing the use of any language in specific situations makes it clear that using a language can cause misunderstandings. This risk is all the more serious in intercultural situations, especially when the language does not have its own long-standing cultural traditions. Is it necessary for Esperanto to cultivate its own culture? Or could the lack thereof be advantageous? We propose to research different expressive possibilities from the standpoint of pragmatics and semantics. According to Culioli (1990, 1999) every language element produced in a message can be in- terpreted as a trail of the speaker’s cognitive processes, which are not only rational, but also emotional and social. Thus, meanings are constructed during an interaction and the cultural source not only helps to construct an interpretation but is the result of the act of speaking itself. The exceptional situation of Esperanto then is interesting because its flexible structure can function as a response to such intercultural demands., Se oni observas la uzadon de iu ajn lingvo en konkretaj situacioj, oni konstatas ke la uzo de lingvo povas okazigi miskomprenon. Czy dlatego esperanto musi rozwijać swoją własną kulturę? Czy może pewne braki są korzystne? Proponujemy zbadanie różnych możliwości wyrazu z perspektywy związków między pragmatyką a semantyką. Each language is made up of its own words. In most cases, these are polysemic, they have several meanings. Modeling polysemy in Automatic Language Processing is a difficult task when it comes to word vectors and traditional word embeddings systems have some difficulties in dealing with polysemy. Using FlauBERT, which is a new language model developed in 2019, we will see that it is now easier to deal with polysemy, especially withcontextualized word vectors. The entire context of a sentence is taken into account by FlauBERT in order to represent each word as a vector. After a brief analysis of the different domains involved, I will present in this paper the different experiments I have performed using FlauBERT word vectors.; Chaque langue est constituée de mots qui lui sont propres. La modélisation de la polysémie en Traitement Automatique de la Langue est une tâche difficile lorsqu’il s’agit de vecteurs de mots ; les systèmes de plongements de mots traditionnels ont certaines difficultés à traiter la polysémie. À l’aide de FlauBERT, qui est un nouveau modèle de langue développé en 2019, nous verrons qu’il est maintenant plus facile de traiter de la polysémie, notamment grâce à des vecteurs de mots contextualisés. Le contexte entier d’une phrase est pris en compte par FlauBERT afin de représenter chaque mot sous forme de vecteur. Après une brève analysedes différents domaines en jeu, je présenterai dans ce mémoire les différentes expérimentations que j’ai effectuées à l’aide des vecteurs de mots du système FlauBERT.

Idiomatic expressions have been the subject of a wide range of phraseological studies across many languages. In this corpus study, we analyse the semantic properties of the polysemic English verb get in idiomatic expressions. Through a syntactic analysis of the internal structure of 26 expressions, along with a series of observations on a large corpus of spoken and written American English, we attempt to demonstrate the hypothesis that the meanings of get present in phraseological units with varying degrees of semantic opacity are analogous to its meanings in free lexical associations sharing similar structures. In addition, we attempt to show that the meanings carried by the verb get in idiomatic expressions contribute in a systematic way to the creation of the larger figurative meanings expressed by these phraseological units. We hope that this study will shed some light on the semantic behavior of polysemic verbs in the context of phraseological units.; Les expressions figées font l’objet d’une large gamme d’études phraséologiques dans de nombreuses langues. Dans cette étude sur corpus, nous analysons les caractéristiques sémantiques du verbe anglais polysémique get au sein des expressions figées. À travers une analyse syntaxique des structures internes de 26 expressions ainsi qu’une série d’observations sur un grand corpus oral et écrit d’anglais américain, nous essayons de vérifier l’hypothèse que les significations de get présentes dans les unités phraséologiques variant dans leur niveau d’opacité sémantique sont conformes aux significations trouvées dans les combinaisons lexicales en association libre. De plus, nous essayons de démontrer que les significations de get dans les expressions figées contribuent de façon systématique à la réalisation du langage figuré véhiculé par ces unités phraséologiques. Nous espérons que cette étude fera la lumière sur le comportement sémantique des verbes polysémiques dans le cadre des unités phraséologiques.

International audience; Availability of big electronic annotated corpora for Maninka and Bamana languages lets us think about development of corpus-driven dictionaries, i.e. dictionaries of a new generation. In a corpus-driven dictionary, elaboration of the polysemy, collocations, syntactic valencies, stylistic, regional and dialectal characteristics of each lexeme (and of each sense of a lexeme) will be based on the analysis of a concordance extracted from the corpus. Henceforth, it becomes possible to evaluate statistically each feature. Two sample examples of lexicographic analysis of Bambara lexemes, bánban and jàhadi, are given.; La disponibilité des corpus électroniques annotés comptant des millions de mots pour les langues maninka et bambara permet de penser des dictionnaires de nouvelle génération. В таком словаре разработка полисемии, сочетаемости, синтаксических валентностей, стилистических и регионально-диалектных характеристик каждой лексемы (и каждого значения лексемы) должно базироваться на анализе корпусного конкорданса. Становится возможным не только выявление различных характеристик, но и их статистическая оценка. В статье даётся, в качестве примера, лексикографический анализ баманских лексем bánban и jàhadi на основе корпусных данных.

International audience; How are depoliticising discourses on water issues produced and rendered effective? Research on discursive depoliticisation has focused on the ability of different types of policy networks to generate powerful and reasonably coherent depoliticised narratives. In the paper, by tracing the depoliticisation of poor water quality in a wastewater reuse project in Marrakesh, Morocco, we suggest that depoliticised discourses can also be produced in a much more dispersed, less coordinated way. In the case analysed here, depoliticisation occurred through an 'ambiguous agreement' around a highly polysemic idea, that of innovation. All the key actors understood that the project was innovative but that water quality was not a significant part of the innovation. This encouraged each actor to frame poor water quality as a strictly private matter that the golf courses needed to tackle on their own; however, each actor also had their own, idiosyncratic interpretation of exactly what this innovation was about and why poor water quality was in the end not that important. Showing how depoliticisation can be the product of mechanisms with varying degrees of coordination helps account for the ubiquity of the phenomenon.

Although it raises some interest in the field of social sciences, polysemy is often overlooked in organizational science, where research relies on positivist traditions. These traditions continue to influence researchers, regardless of their epistemological or methodological approaches; this in turn has an impact on the way they address polysemic terms. Our objective is to propose an integrative reflexive approach structured around eight topics of reflexion in order to explore how, in an organizational research project, both participants and researchers understand and use complex polysemic terms. By doing so, we bring four major contributions: it first highlights the central position polysemy could occupy in organizational science; secondly, polysemy could bridge and enhance the debate between positivist and interpretivist organizational researchers; thirdly, reflexivity for polysemy has the potential to improve the theorization; and finally, the mutual influence between polysemy and reflexivity could stimulate creativity.

Based on a broad survey of the contributions made by members of the LACITO to the analysis of reflexive constructions in Oceanic and other lesser described languages, this paper examines the significance of these contributions to a typology of reflexivity, i.e. to characterizing parameters and limits of variation and to identifying problems and puzzles for current theorizing. Contrary to wide-spread previous views, these contributions clearly show that there are reflexive markers in Oceanic languages, even if these are used parsimoniously and primarily in potentially ambiguous contexts. The properties manifested by these markers can largely be subsumed under the implicational generalizations formulated for reflexives so far. As far as the origin of reflexive markers and the intensifiers they are based on are concerned, a variety of new, primarily spatial, sources have been identified as starting points for the relevant processes of grammaticalization., Prenant en compte les diverses contributions des chercheurs du Lacito ayant étudié les constructions réfléchies dans les langues océaniennes et dans d'autres langues encore peu décrites, cet article examine ces analyses et leurs données dans le cadre d'une typologie du réfléchi, afin de caractériser les différents paramètres observés et la limite de la variation rencontrée dans ce domaine, en identifiant les problèmes et les intéressantes spécificités au regard des théories actuelles. Contrairement à ce qui était admis jusqu'à présent, les contributions sur les langues océaniennes montrent clairement qu'il existe bel et bien des marques de réfléchi dans ces langues, même si ces marques sont rarement obligatoires, apparaissant essentiellement dans des contextes qui, sans elles, seraient ambigus. Les propriétés de ces marques de réfléchi peuvent être classées sans problème parmi les généralisations implicationnelles élaborées jusqu'à présent pour le domaine du réfléchi. En ce qui concerne l'origine des marques de réfléchi et celle des intensifieurs qui leur sont liés, des sources peu attestées, essentiellement spatiales, ont été identifiées comme base de départ à des processus de grammaticalisation ayant donné naissance à ces marques.

International audience; Present-day English makes major use of adverbs for the expression of speaker stance, following what has been described as the adverbialization of speaker attitude. Two adverbial constructions have particular stance-expressing functions: those with an adverb that modifies a clause or sentence (SAdv) and those with an adverb that modifies an adjective phrase (AdjAdv). The emergence of modal and evaluative SAdvs from verb-phrase-modifying adverbs (VPAdvs) via inferencing and scope expansion has been well documented. There is a large literature on the diachronic development of present-day English intensifiers such as absolutely or really. Much less attention has been paid to the evaluative function of many AdjAdvs. This paper focuses on the relationship between extra-clausal stance-ly adverbs of the SAdv construction and their intraclausal counterparts of the AdjAdv construction. It is argued that-ly adverbial modification of adjectives cannot be reduced to intensification. It has become a favoured site for the expression of speaker evaluation, contributing to increase in information compression. The evaluative AdjAdv and SAdv constructions are seen to share a semantic schema, and by hypothesis belong to a single more abstract constructional schema. While earlier types appear to have evolved from circumstance adverbs, later types may have been coined by analogy in a cycle of increasing productivity.

This article deals with the use of the verb feel and the substantive feeling in Mrs Dalloway. The high number of occurrences of those lexemes testifies to their centrality in the novel, which gives them an exceptional status. This contribution aims to demonstrate that the great polysemy of feel, which refers to sensations, affects and cognition, is underpinned by a semantic core that recalls not only the Woolfian vision of perception but also the role that writing and language play for Woolf as she defines them in some of her non-fiction writings. Indeed, unlike other verbs of perception, feel expresses a sense modality related to the direct contact between the perceiver and the perceived, and the effect that the latter has on the former. It is connected with both fusion and distinction. In that sense, it is reminiscent of the semi-transparent envelope that Woolf evokes in “A Sketch of the Past” and which stands for the contact with and the protection against the outside world. We shall see that feel’s semantic core is to be found in all its uses and that the text exploits this potential to make sensations and feelings the privileged access to the outside world and to meaning. The thesis defended here is therefore that the polysemy of feel is a central interpretative key to the novel, hence its exceptional status in Mrs Dalloway. Cet article porte sur l’emploi dans Mrs Dalloway du verbe feel et du substantif feeling. Leur importante présence numérique témoigne de leur centralité dans le roman, qui leur confère un statut exceptionnel. Cette contribution a pour objectif de démontrer que la grande polysémie de feel, qui renvoie aux sensations, aux affects et à la cognition, est sous-tendue par un noyau sémantique qui rappelle non seulement la vision woolfienne de la perception mais aussi le rôle de l’écriture et du langage pour Woolf tels qu’elle les définit dans certains de ses écrits non-fictionnels. En effet, à la différence d’autres verbes de perception, feel exprime une modalité sensorielle liée au contact direct entre percevant et perçu et à l’effet que le perçu a sur le percevant. Il dit à la fois la fusion et la distinction. En cela, il rappelle la semi-transparent envelope qu’évoque Woolf dans « A Sketch of the Past » et qui est à la fois contact avec et rempart contre le monde extérieur. Nous verrons que le noyau sémantique de feel se retrouve dans tous ses emplois et que le texte exploite ce potentiel pour faire du feeling l’accès privilégié au monde extérieur et à la signification. La thèse défendue ici est donc que la polysémie de feel est une clef de lecture centrale du roman et que le lexème occupe une place exceptionnelle dans Mrs Dalloway.

International audience; After presenting two forms of Contextualism, I will argue that the phenomenon of polysemy supports the stronger one – so-called Radical Contextualism. My argument will be based on a comparison between indexicality and polysemy.

International audience; Two recent methods based on distributional semantic models (DSMs) have proved very successful in learning high-quality vector representations of words from large corpora: word2vec (Mikolov, Chen, et al. 2013; Mikolov, Yih, et al. 2013) and GloVe (Pennington et al. 2014). Once trained on a very large corpus, these algorithms produce distributed representations for words in the form of vectors. DSMs based on deep learning and neural networks have proved efficient in representing the meaning of individual words. In this paper, I assess to what extent state-of-the-art word-vector semantics can help corpus linguists annotate large datasets for semantic classes. Although word vectors suggest decisive opportunities for resolving semantic annotation issues, it has yet to improve in terms of its representation of polysemy, homonymy, and multiword expressions.

The study addresses the relationship between diachronic change and synchronic polysemy based on the use of diminutives in four closely related Southeastern Mande languages. It explores the synchronic patterns of use of cognate diminutive markers deriving from the word ‘child’, and accounts for differences between the languages in terms of a Radial Category network, which is designed to capture in one representation both mechanisms of diachronic change and mechanisms of regular meaning extension. The study argues that the same approach can be used to account for the ways diminutive markers acquire new meanings and for the ways an old diminutive category disintegrates, when new markers start replacing the old one in some of the core diminutive functions. The invasion and expansion of new markers may result in discontinuous semantic structures that can only be understood when the diachrony is taken into account (in this particular case study, the evidence for historical change comes from a synchronic comparison with closely related languages).

International audience; This article deals with two different aspects of “regular homophony” in comparative historical linguistics. “Homophony” is used here as a cover term for both polysemy and homonymy, i.e. all the cases where a word is given several meanings in a dictionary. Our results are based on the semi-automatic analysis of regular homophony in RefLex, the richest online lexical database, which gathers 1,150,000 words from 1289 sources, covering 785 African languages (as of 2018).We show that the first aspect of regular homophony, i.e. regular polysemy, may be effectively used for semantic reconstruction and for the finding of new cognates. An Appendix gives the inventory of all regular polysemic links found in the RefLex corpus for notions included in the Swadesh-100 list. The second aspect, regular homonymy, may be effectively used for the finding of regular sound correspondences between related languages. Such correspondences may even be set up between genetically distant languages, without having to rely on intermediate reconstructions.

The study establishes that, in the context of a comparative clause beginning with comme, on has two distinctives values. The first corresponds to an indeterminate value, quelqu’un, when the comparative clause has one of the following configurations: (a) P comme Q, où P = SV1 et Q = comme on V1 ; (b) P = SV1 et Q = comme on V2 ; the second corresponds to an indefinite value, n’importe qui, tout le monde when thecomparative clause has one of the following configurations: (c) Q = comme on Vcroire, penser, voir et (d) Q = on Vde dire. The study also shows that, when translated into Arabic, on is rendered to either the generic term, al-marʾ-u (l’Homme), or to a verb with a subject affixed pronoun that refers to person 4 (nous). This confirms that on has two values in French, which results of its polysemy., La présente étude permet d’attribuer deux valeurs distinctes au pronom on lorsqu’il est dans une subordonnée comparative introduite par comme. La première correspond à une valeur indéterminée, quelqu’un, lorsque la subordonnée comparative a l’une des configurations : (a) P comme Q, où P = SV1 et Q = comme on V1 ; (b) P = SV1 et Q = comme on V2 ; la seconde est une valeur indéfinie, n’importe qui, tout lemonde dans les configurations : (c) Q = comme on Vcroire, penser, voir et (d) Q = on Vde dire. Lors de sa traduction vers l’arabe, on est rendu soit par un terme qualifié de générique en arabe, al-marʾ-u (l’Homme), soit par un verbe avec un pronom affixe sujet qui renvoie à la personne 4 (nous), ce qui confirme les deux valeurs relevées en français, résultats de sa polysémie.

International audience; This paper investigates the polysemic character of the Efficient Market Hypothesis through a comparison of the contributions of the two authors who introduced this hypothesis in 1965, Eugene Fama and Paul Samuelson. While both had a normative approach, it is argued that the key point distinguishing the two contributions is the expertise developed by each author. Fama interpreted his model to make practical recommendations for investment strategy. Samuelson interpreted his model to discuss and promote a political expertise that would be useful for policymaking such as the Pareto optimality of speculative price or the social benefit of speculation. The second part investigates the context of paper writing. We suggest that two elements are central to explain Fama and Samuelson's stance: first, the contrasting viewpoints of their research institutions, respectively Chicago and MIT, and second, the position of each author in early financial economics. Finally, we show how their early contrasted stance is consistent with Fama and Samuelson's opposite reactions to the Efficient Market Hypothesis controversy in the 1980s. In conclusion, we suggest that this opposition between Fama and Samuelson is useful to discuss the early EMH controversy in the 1980s.; Cet article étudie le caractère polysémique de l’efficience des marchés financiers à travers une comparaison des contributions des deux auteurs qui ont introduit cette théorie, Eugene Fama et Paul Samuelson. Nous montrons que, si les deux auteurs avaient tous les deux une approche normative, l’élément principal qui les différencie est leur conception de l’expertise. Fama interprétait son modèle pour donner des recommandations pratiques en termes de stratégie d’investissement. Samuelson interprétait son modèle pour discuter et mettre en avant une expertise politique utile pour le décideur public comme l’optimalité parétienne des prix spéculatifs ou les bénéfices sociaux de la spéculation.La seconde partie de l’article étudie le contexte des deux contributions. On suggère que deux éléments sont centraux pour expliquer les positions normatives de Fama et Samuelson : premièrement, le point de vu contrasté de leurs institutions respectives de recherche, l’université de Chicago et le MIT, et deuxièmement, la place qu’occupent les deux auteurs dans le champ émergeant de l’économie financière. Nous montrons dans une dernière partie que ces positions sont cohérentes avec les réactions opposées de Fama et Samuelson à la controverse concernant l’efficience des marchés financiers dans les années 1980. L’article conclut en suggérant que cette comparaison peut être utile à l’analyse de cette controverse.

This article starts from the hypothesis that the French verb raconter (to tell) has but one meaning, i.e. "to narrate", according to Le Brio. Initially, this apparent monosemy did not seem to be very questionable. However, Dubois and Dubois-Charlier's 1997 etymology and classification of French verbs partially contests this first intuition. The dictionary of Dubois & Dubois-Charlier (1997), in particular, establishes three subclasses for the verb's meanings: Tell 01: 'describe a scene'; Tell 02: ‘tell, tell a story’; Tell 03: ‘tell lies’.To verify these meanings, we thoroughly mined a corpus composed of three contemporary works:two novels and a written testimony. We analyze the noun objects of the verb and specify the natureof what is "narrated". We thus show that three meanings of the word story – i.e. story, scene, andlies – underlie the use of the verb, and bear out the classification chosen in Dubois & DuboisCharlier’s 1997 Dictionary. Next, we seek to describe what raconter as a speech verb selects ascompletive content in the verb phrase (VP). More specifically, in indirect speech constructs (saythat-VP), does raconter develop predicates corresponding to the indicated nominal subclasses whenit governs "reported" speech?In conclusion, we present the main uses of raconter (to tell) in the form of a diagram that "maps"the constructions and traces the main lines of development and productivity, according to the meaning that Legallois gives these notions. The frame of reference then widens to that of ConstructionGrammars that are likely to accommodate phraseological phenomena (Legallois, 2014)., Nous partons de l’hypothèse que le verbe raconter a une signification singulière (« exposer par unrécit », d’après Le Brio) dont la monosémie a priori ne parait pas très discutable. Pourtantl’étymologie et le classement des Verbes Français de Dubois & Dubois-Charlier (1997) contestentpartiellement cette première intuition. Le dictionnaire de Dubois & Dubois-Charlier (1997) procèdeà un dégroupement des entrées du verbe en trois sous-classes valant pour trois acceptions. Ce sontrespectivement : Raconter 01 : décrire une scène ; Raconter 02 : raconter, relater une histoire ; Raconter 03 : dire des mensonges.Pour vérifier ces acceptions, nous avons exploré manuellement trois ouvrages contemporains, deuxromans et un témoignage documentaire. Nous y analysons les objets nominaux du verbe et spécifions la nature du dit « raconté ». Nous montrons ainsi que les trois valeurs d’histoire, « histoire » « scène » et « mensonges » orientent l’usage du verbe et confirment le classement de raconter dans le dictionnaire de Dubois & Dubois-Charlier (1997). Ensuite, nous cherchons à décrire ce que raconter comme verbe de parole sélectionne comme contenu complétif sous P, dans les constructionsde discours indirect (raconter qu-P), raconter quand il régit une parole narrative « rapportée » développe-t-il des prédications conformes aux sous-classes nominales indiquées ?Enfin, pour conclure cette étude, nous présentons les principaux emplois de raconter sous la formed’un schéma qui en « cartographie » les constructions et en retrace les grandes lignes d’élaborationet de productivité, au sens que Legallois confère à ces notions. Le cadre de référence s’élargit alorsà celui des grammaires de construction susceptibles d’accueillir les phénomènes phraséologiques (Legallois, 2014).

Inclutus, qui exprime une notoriété distinctive enracinée dans le temps et propre à l'épopée et à la tragédie, est aussi employé par des auteurs techniques. Gloriosus et famosus, à la différence des substantifs correspondants, ne se disent pratiquement pas de la gloire personnelle. Clarus et illustris s'appliquent, eux, à des personnes, et il est difficile de leur associer une forme particulière de gloire ou de renommée, car la notoriété qu'ils expriment dépend en fait des différents cercles de reconnaissance sociale.

The relation established between the two cons- tituents of a collocation is frequently described as an interlexical selection. In this paper, we propose an extension of the selective restric- tions consisting in considering the non-standard lexical function that justifies the cooccurrence of the collocation’s constituents as a kind of conditioned polysemy of the collocative when it appears not with a specific lexical base but with the materialization of a semanteme defi- ning a class of objects. Eventually, the lexical function transmitted by the collocative can be extrapolated to other classes of objects. In this case, it is not possible to speak about lexical collocation but about a simple cooccurrence. La relation entretenue entre les constituants des collocations, à savoir la base et le collocatif, est le plus souvent décrite comme une sélection inter-lexicale. Nous proposons dans cet article un élargissement de cette restriction interrela- tionnelle qui consiste à concevoir la fonction lexicale non-standard, qui justifie la cooccu- rrence des composants de la collocation, com- me une sorte de polysémie du collocatif con- ditionnée par la présence non pas d’une base lexicale particulière, mais de la matérialisation d’un sémantème définissant une classe d’objets. Éventuellement, la FL véhiculée par ce collo- catif pourrait être extrapolée à d’autres classes d’objets. Dans ce cas-là, on n’aurait plus à par- ler de collocation lexicale mais d’une simple cooccurrence.

This study comes within the scope of lexical semantics. More specifically, it deals with the topic of polysemy in the nominals. As a first step, theoretical issues of such a research are clarified. It leads to focus on the concept of semantic invariant to give an insight into the semantic identity of a given noun regardless of its contextual variations. As a second step, the empirical object of this research – human body part nouns in contemporary French – is delimited. This gives an opportunity to justify the choice of these nouns as a field of research and to set out the methodological approach. The rest of the dissertation consists in the empirical investigation itself. First of all, an overall description of the semantic variation of the French human body part nouns is provided. Then, a semantic analysis of the noun cœur (“heart”) is developed: on one hand, a semantic invariant – suiting all cœur's contextual variations (au cœur du sujet, Paul a mal au cœur, avoir à cœur de réussir…) – is formulated; on the other hand, it is shown how this variation is deeply regular. Eventually, four more nouns (artère “artery”, épaule “shoulder”, bouche “mouth” and pied “foot”) are studied from a semantic point of view. Each of these four studies offers a new opportunity to test the relevance of the semantic invariant concept in order to give an account of the polysemy in the nominals.; Cette étude s'inscrit dans le champ de la sémantique lexicale et explore plus particulièrement la question de la polysémie dans le domaine nominal. Dans une première étape, on explicite les enjeux théoriques d'une telle recherche. This study comes within the scope of lexical semantics. More specifically, it deals with the topic of polysemy in the nominals. As a first step, theoretical issues of such a research are clarified. It leads to focus on the concept of semantic invariant to give an insight into the semantic identity of a given noun regardless of its contextual variations. As a second step, the empirical object of this research – human body part nouns in contemporary French – is delimited. This gives an opportunity to justify the choice of these nouns as a field of research and to set out the methodological approach. The rest of the dissertation consists in the empirical investigation itself. First of all, an overall description of the semantic variation of the French human body part nouns is provided. Then, a semantic analysis of the noun cœur (“heart”) is developed: on one hand, a semantic invariant – suiting all cœur's contextual variations (au cœur du sujet, Paul a mal au cœur, avoir à cœur de réussir…) – is formulated; on the other hand, it is shown how this variation is deeply regular. Eventually, four more nouns (artère “artery”, épaule “shoulder”, bouche “mouth” and pied “foot”) are studied from a semantic point of view. What is a resilient system? From an (eco)geomorphic point of view, the answer is complex owing to the polysemy of the term resilience and its wide range of uses from one discipline to another. In all cases, this concept provides a way of thinking of rivers' future in terms of persistence, sometimes cyclically, sometimes with respect to evolutionary trajectories, and with or without humans as internal parameters. The popularity of resilience in ecology and amongst the social-ecological systems community, following the pioneer works of Holling (1973), has influenced the way we consider the concept in geomorphology and creates misunderstanding and debates. In this contribution, we retrace the evolution of the term over time, introduce the different types of resilience, resilience to pulse, ramp or press disturbances, and show its implicit presence in (fluvial) system theory. Both schools of thought highlight trajectory patterns of systems with positive visions of Earth's future. We then explore some challenging issues in ecogeomorphology related to resilience when considering system responses to discrete events and to a set of internal or external drivers.

International audience; Previous work in information retrieval have shown that using evidence, such as concepts and relations, from external knowledge resources could enhance the retrieval performance. Recently, deep neu-ral approaches have emerged as state-of-the art models for capturing word semantics that can also be efficiently injected in IR models. This paper presents a new tri-partite neural document language framework that leverages explicit knowledge to jointly constrain word, concept, and document learning representations to tackle a number of issues including polysemy and granularity mismatch. We show the effectiveness of the framework in various IR tasks including document similarity, document re-ranking, and query expansion.

This paper analyzes the usage of frequent polysemous verbs by native speakers and by L2 learners and it makes several pedagogical suggestions on how to teach polysemous verbs in a L2 classroom. To achieve these objectives, we have examined the case of the Spanish verb quedar, which means “to remain”, “to stay”, “to be left”, “to make an appointment”, etc. A methodology based on narratives and sentence elicitation has been created. The experiences were accomplished by Spanish speakers (adults and children), and French university students of Spanish, who performed productions in Spanish (L2) and in French (L1). The results of this study seem to confirm that adult native speakers used the semantic network of polysemous verbs in a very conventional manner. Meanings appear to have been acquired thanks to usage, by storing linguistic experiences as patterns, and operating mostly by analogy process. Children seem to have primarily elicited quedar in conventional situations (for instance, to fix an appointment) and depending on a cost-effectiveness criteria (only if this verb adds a pragmatic gain compared to simpler options). The acquisition path of quedar by children (L1) seems to be driven by different factors than for L2 learners. French learners of Spanish used quedar meanings differently from native speakers and they were highly influenced by their L1, both semantically and syntactically.

The aim of this article is to propose solutions to the problem of translation of the French pronoun on into Arabic. These problems are linked to the absence of a corresponding pronoun in the latter language and its strong polysemy in French. As a result, on has become the most misinterpreted pronoun in many translations of French literary works. In order to resolve these inconsistencies, on is examined from an enunciative psychomechanical perspective. This theoretical framework makes it possible to delimit the potential meaning of on before any usage (signifié de puissance) which can generate all the effective values in discourse (signifiés d'effet). The study is based on a contrastive analytical approach of a bilingual corpus in order to reach a typology of Arabic translations of on. The result obtained consists in the identification of thirteen values of on in French as well as its corresponding translations in Arabic., L'objectif de cet article est de proposer des solutions au problème de traduction de on en arabe. Ces problèmes sont liés à l'absence d'un pronom correspondant dans cette langue et à sa forte polysémie en français. Par conséquent, on est devenu le pronom le plus mal interprété dans de nombreuses traductions des oeuvres littéraires françaises. Afin de résoudre ces incohérences, on est examiné selon une perspective psychomécanique énonciative. Ce cadre théorique permet de délimiter le signifié de puissance de on en langue, capable de générer tous les signifiés d'effet en discours. L'étude se base sur une approche analytique contrastive d'un corpus bilingue afin d'aboutir à une typologie de traductions arabes de on. Le résultat obtenu consiste en l'identification de treize valeurs de on en français ainsi que de ses traductions correspondantes en arabe.

Transcategorial morphemes share the common ability to be used synchronically across different syntactic categories (synchronic grammaticalization). This paper first shows that transcategoriality is a general property of linguistic systems, variously exploited by languages, then addresses the theoretical questions raised by these morphemes. A new model accounting for this transcategorial functioning, named “fractal grammar”, is proposed and illustrated by various examples. The analysis for this particular functioning relates the polysemy of these morphemes to their syntactic flexibility in a dynamic way: the variation of the syntactic scope of the morpheme (“fractal functioning”) is triggered by its environment and produces its polysemy (variation of the semantic scope). Fractal grammar is thus defined by two basic mechanisms: the construal of a common image-schema (“scale invariance”), accounting for the unity of the morpheme, and the activation of “scale (or level) properties”, accounting for the semantic and syntactic variations. A typological sketch of transcategoriality is then sketched, in relation to the strategies used by linguistic systems for the distribution of grammatical information. Three types of transcategorial strategies are distinguished: “oriented”, “generic”, and “functional” transcategoriality. The status of linguistic categories is then discussed in the light of the analysis of these particular morphemes.

This paper deals with subtle semantic differences between French and Russian lexical units which have important consequences on these units’ combinatorial behaviour in sentences and, therefore, that are a challenge in the context of foreign language learning/teaching. We analyse the specific case of the Russian noun LAVINA ‘avalanche’ and its French counterpart AVALANCHE, which leads us to show that there semantic difference lies in a “communicative inversion” of the central component of their meaning. We show how this difference can be modelled in the lexicographic definition of both nouns. Finally, we examine the consequences this difference has on the polysemy of the corresponding Russian and French vocables., В статье рассматриваются семантические различия между французскими и русскими лексическими единицами, влияющие на сочетаемость этих единиц в тексте и, следовательно, представляющие трудности при преподавании и изучении русского / французского языка как иностранного. Сопоставляются русское существительное ЛАВИНА и его французский эквивалент AVALANCHE. Делается вывод о том, что основное различие между ними состоят в «коммуникативной инверсии» центральных компонентов их значений. Показано, как это различие может быть отражено в лексикографическом толковании изучаемых существительных. В заключение рассматривается влияние этого различия на развитие полисемии русской и французской вокабул.

This dissertation examines the polysemy of the pronoun on from a contrastive, French-Arabic perspective. The objective of the study is to resolve a problem of irregularity in most Arabic translations of on. This problem seems to be rooted in the variety of contradictory usage of on in French which reflects its polysemy. The polysemy of on was examined through Gustave Guillaume’s interpretative model of psychomechanics of language. Then, an enunciative approach was employed to complement the theoretical framework. As a result, the ontogenesis of on revealed how the pronoun became intra-verbal, despite its substantive etymology. Moreover, the study employed the Radical Binary Tensor that represents the potential meaning of on in tongue. This potential meaning is illustrated by a double movement: from an indefinite plurality to an indeterminate plurality, where the point of transition is moi-locuteur. Further, the obtained potential meaning facilitated the identification, and ordination, of 13 effective meanings for on by taking into consideration the notion of person and the category of number. Those criteria distinguish between the values of the 3rd person, person 4, and the discursive values on one hand, and the expressive effects on the other. The contrastive analysis of a bilingual corpus revealed a preference on the part of translators to deal with on based on its expressive effects. Finally, the study proposed a set of Arabic correspondents to each of on’s 13 effective meanings. Ultimately, the research concluded that an accurate translation of on can only be possible by considering the group on + verb as a unit of translation., Cette thèse étudie la polysémie du pronom on dans une perspective contrastive français-arabe. L’objectif de cette étude consiste à résoudre le problème de l’irrégularité dans la traduction arabe de on. Ce problème provient d’une variété d’emplois contradictoires de on en français, d’où sa polysémie. La polysémie de on a été examinée d’après le modèle interprétatif de la psychomécanique du langage de Gustave Guillaume complété par une approche énonciative. Ce cadre théorique a révélé comment, par une remontée vers l’ontogénèse de on, ce dernier est devenu un pronom intra-verbal malgré son origine substantivale. Par ailleurs, il est fait usage du Tenseur Binaire Radical (TBR) qui représente le signifié de puissance de on en langue. Ce signifié de puissance est illustré par un double mouvement qui va d’une pluralité indéfinie à une pluralité indéterminée, le point de transition étant moi-locuteur. Ainsi, le signifié de puissance de on a permis d’identifier et d’ordonner 13 signifiés d’effet, en tenant compte de la catégorie du nombre et de la notion de personne. Ces critères permettent de distinguer entre les valeurs de la 3e personne, celles de la personne 4 et les valeurs discursives d’un côté, et les effets de sens de l’autre. Mais pour traduire on, l’analyse contrastive du corpus bilingue a révélé que les traducteurs privilégient plutôt les effets de sens véhiculés par ce pronom. L’étude se termine donc par une proposition d’un ensemble de correspondants arabes pour chacun des 13 signifiés d’effet de on. Enfin, pour que la traduction de ce pronom soit adéquate, il faut que le groupe on + verbe soit considéré comme une unité de traduction.

International audience; The notion of lexical polysemy is considered under very different angles depending on the context in which it is called on, e.g. in theoretical lexicology, practical lexicography or so-called cognitive approaches to the lexicon. We adopt an approach where polysemy is defined as a property of vocables (roughly, entries in dictionary word lists): the property to regroup several word senses, monosemy being the opposite property. Polysemy is the consequence of a more basic fact: the relation that holds between lexical units grouped within the same vocable. This relation we term copolysemy. The notion of copolysemy is required to not only account for such a well-known phenomenon as regular polysemy, but also to model the polysemy structures of vocables and the incidence these structures may have on lexical dynamics, vocabulary acquisition, analogical reasoning based on lexical information, etc. As for many other aspects of lexicology, the study of copolysemy has to be anchored in a thorough analysis of lexical data. In this paper, we present the current results of an exploration of copolysemy in French, which allowed us to systematically retrieve patterns of copolysemy (on which we believe regular polysemy is built) and achieve formal description of the polysemy structure of several thousand French vocables. The descriptive work is embedded in a large-scale lexicographic project, namely the construction of the French Lexical Network (fr-LN). Though based on the study of the French lexicon, the approach to the modeling of polysemy presented here is expected to be applicable to natural languages in general.

International audience; At the time Father Desfontaines publishes his Dictionnaire néologique, theorists basically reflect on the correctness of words, with a view to guarantee a style in line with the concept of « bon usage ». There is no question of judging language phenomena in terms of creativity, degradation, fashion or ‘uniqueness’, as it is nowadays the case. Instead, the debate is linked to the will to codify language usage and to establish set rules and standards for French as a common national language. Their work is quite similar to that of the authors of the first dictionaries and the “Remarqueurs”. It is also related to the publications on synonymy, such as La justesse de la langue françoise (Gabriel Girard, 1718). This article aims at situating the work and methods of Desfontaines in this context.; À l’époque où l’Abbé Desfontaines publie son Dictionnaire néologique, on réfléchit surtout à la justesse des mots dans l’objectif de garantir un style correspondant au bon usage. Il ne s’agit pas de juger le langage en termes de créativité, de dégradation, d’effets de mode langagiers ou de ‘particularité’ de la langue, comme à l’heure actuelle. The present dissertation focuses on the acquisition of highly polysemous verbs by French as a second language learners. I am particularly interested in the polysemy of the verb prendre. This dissertation has two complementary objectives. On the one hand, the first objective is to describe the polysemy of prendre through a lexical semantic analysis within a cognitive framework. On the other hand, the second objective is to evaluate the impact of this polysemy on learners' knowledge of the verb’s different senses in order to isolate those which are the most problematic for French L2 learners. Furthermore, I also investigate whether the problems associated with polysemy for Anglophone learners can be explained through cross-linguistic influence. The semantic analysis of the verb prendre describes all the predicative uses of the verb and is based on lexical data from several dictionnaires. Prior to carrying out the semantic analysis, a battery of syntactic tests was used in order to categorize the different uses of the verb prendre into the following categories: support verb constructions, idiomatic expressions and predicative uses. I propose that the verb prendre has an abstract core meaning which can be divided into three parts. While this abstract core meaning does not correspond to any of the specific senses of the verb, it is present in all of them. I use the cognitive semantic concept of the windowing of attention in order to explain how each of the parts of the core meaning can be windowed in order to obtain the different senses of the verb. Moreover, this analysis allowed me to formulated hypotheses about the differences between the verb prendre and its equivalents in English.In order to meet the second objective of this dissertation, I conducted an experiment on 191 learners of French as a second language. All participants completed three tasks: a cloze test to measure their proficiency level in French, a guided written production task and an acceptability judgement task. The results of the logistic and multinomial regression analyses show not only that the semantic analysis proposed can predict participants’ knowledge of the different senses of the verb, but also that participants whose first language is English behave differently from those whose first language is another language, confirming the presence of cross-linguistic influence for the English-speaking participants., Cette thèse se consacre aux enjeux de la polysémie verbale pour l’acquisition des langues secondes. Nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement à la polysémie du verbe prendre. Cette thèse poursuit deux objectifs complémentaires. D’une part, notre premier objectif est de décrire la polysémie du verbe prendre au moyen d’une analyse en sémantique lexicale dans une approche cognitive. D’autre part, notre second objectif est d’évaluer l’incidence de la polysémie du verbe prendre sur les connaissances qu’ont les apprenants de ce verbe et d’isoler les différentes acceptions de prendre mises au jour par notre analyse sémantique, qui s’avèrent problématiques pour les apprenants du français L2. Par ailleurs, nous cherchons également à savoir si les problèmes liés à la polysémie chez les anglophones peuvent être liés à l’influence translangagière.L’analyse sémantique du verbe prendre porte sur l’ensemble des acceptions prédicatives du verbe. Notre corpus d’analyse provient de données lexicales issues de plusieurs dictionnaires de référence. Afin de délimiter le corpus d’acceptions soumis à l’analyse sémantique, nous avons effectué une analyse syntaxique permettant de départager les différents emplois du verbe prendre : les constructions à verbe support, les locutions verbales et les acceptions prédicatives. Puis, nous proposons une analyse sémantique monosémique des acceptions prédicatives du verbe prendre qui s’articule autour d’un noyau de sens tripartite qui ne correspond à aucune des acceptions spécifiques du verbe, mais qui est présent dans l’ensemble de ces acceptions. Chacune des parties du noyau de sens peut faire l’objet d’un fenêtrage de l’attention, qui nous permet de mettre au jour les différents sens du verbe. Nous avons également émis des hypothèses sur les différences entre le verbe prendre et ses équivalents en anglais. Pour atteindre le second objectif de notre travail, nous avons mené une expérimentation auprès de 191 apprenants du français langue seconde. Tous les participants ont complété trois tâches expérimentales : un test de closure afin de mesurer leur niveau de compétence langagière en français, une tâche de production écrite et une tâche de jugement d’acceptabilité. Les résultats des analyses de régression logistique et multinomiale montrent non seulement que l’analyse sémantique que nous avons proposée permet de prédire la connaissance des différentes acceptions du verbe par les apprenants du français L2, mais aussi que les apprenants anglophones et allophones ont un comportement différent par rapport aux types d’acceptions du verbe prendre, comportement que nous avons pu expliquer par l’influence translangagière chez les participants anglophones.

This paper aims to study instrumental related functions in some Western Iranian languages. The data were collected from descriptive grammars, and interviews in some cases. Narrog’s instrumental semantic map is the basis for analyzing polysemy patterns in these languages. The data show that two main polysemy patterns are attested: (1) Instrumental and companion functions are coded alike. (2) They are coded differently. These two patterns are distributed areally. Furthermore, some languages are shifting/have shifted between these two types mainly as a result of contact-induced matters. In languages in which two or more functions are not directly connected, one marker generally has both instrumental and dative functions.

National audience; Since last decade, big text corpora have been built for Maninka and Bamana languages. While working on the corpora, electronic dictionaries for these languages are being built too. Time is coming for the launching projects for building dictionaries of a new generation, i. e. corpus-driven dictionaries. In such a dictionary, each lexeme could be represented in a much more elaborated way than in "traditional" dictionaries. This would concern the polysemy of a lexeme, its collocations and valencies, stylistic and regional characteristics of each sense, and other lexicographical aspects. As a sample, the structure of an entry for the Bamana verb bánban is presented.; В течение последнего десятилетия были созданы миллионные корпуса текстов манинка и бамана. Параллельно с этим ведется работа по созданию и совершенствованию словарей этих языков. Складываются условия для вывода лексикографической работы на принципиально новый уровень, который имел бы целью создание «корпусных словарей» (corpus-driven dictionaries). International audience; Approaches to the French conditionnel (henceforth COND) are generally monosemist (COND has one single meaning), often compositional (it is composed of two morphemes /R/ and /ɛ/) and implicitly non-conventional (the values interpreted in utterances are not stored in the linguistic knowledge of the speaker). The article suggests an alternative conception of COND-polysemic, non-compositional and conventional-which is based on the notion of construction developed by construction grammars (Goldberg 1995, 1996). According to this conception, COND corresponds to three constructions in French, with a temporal, modal or evidential meaning. This approach is further supported by diachronic data that notably show the double etymological origin of COND in Latin.; Les approches du conditionnel français (désormais COND) sont généralement monosémistes (le COND possède un sens unique), souvent compositionnelles (il est composé de deux morphèmes /R/ et /ɛ/) et implicitement non-conventionnelles (les valeurs interprétées dans les énoncés ne sont pas conservées dans les connaissances linguistiques du locuteur). L'article propose une conception alternative du COND-polysémique, non-compositionnelle et conventionnelle-qui se fonde sur la notion de construction des grammaires de construction (Goldberg 1995, 2006). Selon cette conception, le COND correspond à trois constructions en français, de sens temporel, modal et évidentiel. Cette approche est appuyée par une analyse diachronique qui montre notamment sa double origine étymologique en latin.

International audience; In grammatically gendered languages, gender is simultaneously a structural categorisation and a power relationship. In this case, what linguistic room of manoeuvre do we have to challenge gender ? How to say (or unsay) gender ? In French, gender is a compulsory grammatical category. Yet, there is plenty of means to bypass this requirement, to unsay, distort or non-conform gender obligations. What is this linguistic turmoil the sign of ? Does it means that a compulsory gender might not be necessary, or at least, not mandatory ? Two approaches, which are very distinct at first sight, may help us understand this bypassing of gender obligation : Taoism and Rhetoric. They both fathom language as a space of contradiction, within which various qualifications of gender can freeze or unfreeze, in the light of plural norms. They also share the possibility to critique these norms and doxa of gender. In this light, Taoism and Rhetoric are two complementary faces of a common understanding of language as an activity.; Quelle marge de manœuvre la langue nous laisse-t-elle vis-à-vis du genre, compris simultanément comme une catégorisation structurale de la langue française et comme un rapport de pouvoir ? Comment dire le genre ? En français, le genre est une catégorie grammaticale obligatoire. Pourtant, il existe une multitude de façons de contourner cette obligation pour ne pas dire le genre, ou bien le déformer, ne pas s’y conformer. Que signifie alors ce tumulte grammatical ? Indique-t-il que ce genre obligatoire pourrait ne pas être nécessaire, ou du moins que l’obligation serait contournable ? Deux approches, a priori très éloignées l’une de l’autre, peuvent nous aider à penser ce contournement : le taoïsme et la rhétorique. Ces deux approches ont en commun de prendre le langage comme un espace de contradiction, au prisme de normes à travers lesquelles se figent et se défigent les façons de qualifier le genre. Elles ont également en commun de fournir la possibilité d’une critique de ces normes, ou de ces doxas, du genre. Taoïsme et rhétorique constituent deux faces complémentaires d’une même lecture du langage comme activité.
