Abstract

Bacterial pathogens in surface waters may threaten human health, especially in developing countries, where untreated surface water is often used for domestic needs. The objective of the long-term multiscale monitoring of Escherichia coli ([E. coli]) concentration in stream water, and that of associated variables (temperature (T), electrical conductance (EC), dissolved oxygen concentration ([DO]) and saturation (DO%), pH (pH), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), turbidity (Turb), and total suspended sediment concentration ([TSS])), was to identify the drivers of bacterial dissemination across tropical catchments. This data description paper presents three datasets (see “Data availability” section) collected at 31 sampling stations located within the Mekong River and its tributaries in Lao PDR (0.6–25 946 km2) from 2011 to 2021. The 1602 records have been used to describe the hydrological processes driving in-stream E. coli concentration during flood events, to understand the land-use impact on bacterial dissemination on small and large catchment scales, to relate stream water quality and diarrhea outbreaks, and to build numerical models. The database may be further used, e.g., to interpret new variables measured in the monitored catchments, or to map the health risk posed by fecal pathogens.

Abstract

International audience; Mountain regions of the humid tropics are characterized by steep slopes and heavy rains. These regions are thus prone to both high surface runoff and soil erosion. In Southeast Asia, uplands are also subject to rapid land-use change, predominantly as a result of increased population pressure and market forces. Since 1998, the Houay Pano site, located in northern Lao PDR (19.85°N 102.17°E) within the Mekong basin, aims at assessing the long-term impact of the conversion of traditional slash-and-burn cultivation systems to commercial perennial monocultures such as teak tree plantations, on the catchment hydrological response and sediment yield. The instrumented site monitors hydro-meteorological and soil loss parameters at both microplot (1 m2) and small catchment (0.6 km2) scales. The monitored catchment is part of the network of critical zone observatories named Multiscale TROPIcal CatchmentS (M-TROPICS). The data shared by M-TROPICS in Houay Pano are (1) rainfall, (2) air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed, and global radiation, (3) catchment land use, (4) stream water level, suspended particulate matter, bed particulate matter and stones, (5) soil surface features, and (6) soil surface runoff and soil detachment. The dataset has already been used to interpret suspended particulate matter and bed particulate matter sources and dynamics, to assess the impact of land-use change on catchment hydrology, soil erosion, and sediment yields, to understand bacteria fate and weed seed transport across the catchment, and to build catchment-scale models focused on hydrology and water quality issues. The dataset may be further used to e.g. assess the role of headwater catchments in large tropical river basin hydrology, support the interpretation of new variables measured in the catchment (e.g. contaminants other than fecal bacteria), and assess the relative impacts of both climate and land-use change on the catchment.

Abstract

Shallow landslides can pose a major threat to human lives and infrastructure over significant portions of the global land surface and occur primarily from weakened soil shear resistance due to water infiltration. Although there is growing interest in using vegetation to stabilize hillslopes against landslides, we noted the scarcity of studies examining temporal variations in slope stability, particularly with regard to different land uses. In three tropical and temperate landslide-prone regions (Laos, Costa Rica and France), we combined soil moisture monitoring to 1.2-1.8 m depths in the field, soil shear resistance measurements and numerical modeling to compare slope stability under competing land uses for 2-3 years. Slope stability tracked temporal changes in soil moisture, with smaller contributions from root mechanical reinforcement. Land uses with denser vegetation had greater stabilizing impacts than those with sparser vegetation, which lasted for six to twelve months per year and coincided temporally with growing or rainy/dry seasons. Greater stability under denser land use persisted into wet seasons in one of the sites and were minimized or reversed in the other two sites. Site-specific factors such as climate, soil and species may explain these differences in the vegetational control on slope stability. A review of the data in the literature found that woody vegetation increased slope stability and decreased temporal variation in stability compared to herbaceous vegetation. However, while variations in slope stability decreased in increasingly humid climates, indicating that the largest fluctuations in stability, and hence potential to improve slope integrity with land-use changes, will be found in arid to sub-humid regions. Our results show that dense vegetation provides greater stability and protection against landslides from rainfall. Land managers need to take into account this biological control on hydrology when managing vegetated slopes. Incorporating the vegetation-driven deep soil moisture dynamics will also improve predictive utility of models of specific events.

Management of soil erosion and water resources in the uplands of Lao P.D.R.; Low flow generation from the uplands of has been identified as the one of the most important watershed issues in Southeast Asia. The aim of this work was to examine the effect of fallow regrowth on the hydrological behaviour of a fragmented landscape, under shifting cultivation with short fallows, which is a system typical of the northern Lao P.D.R. uplands. The study focused specifically on analysing and understanding periods of low flow during the dry and wet seasons. After 6 years of hydrological and land use monitoring (2002-2007) in the Houay Pano headwater catchment, we can conclude that fallow regrowth significantly affects the hydrological regime of the catchment. The main results obtained can be summarised as follows: (i) Development of fallow vegetation induces remarkable changes in the annual water balance, in particular, it increases the fraction of incident rainfall redirected by transpiration and canopy interception; (ii) Increased root water uptake subsequent to perennial vegetation growth, reduces groundwater recharge and subsurface reserves; it also lowers the water table, hence limiting stream feeding by shallow groundwater; (iii) This groundwater depletion leads to a drop in the annual stream water yield due to a decrease in wet season inter-stormflow and dry season baseflow; (vi) Subsurface groundwater is the major contributor to floods. Overland flow (surface runoff) contributed most significantly to flood waters during rainfall events in the first two years of fallow regrowth. This study showed that water resources in the uplands of northern Laos are sensitive to land use and hence potentially vulnerable to inappropriate management. The conclusions made in this paper go a step towards predicting the likely consequences of the Government's current effort to eradicate shifting cultivation and replace it with perennial crops such as teak plantations.

Management of soil erosion and water resources in the uplands of Lao P.D.R.; In the Lao PDR 78% of the population are classified as rural and efforts to improve access to potable water and sanitation infrastructures are reaching limited areas, these inhabitants may be particularly affected by water quality-related hazards. The objective of this study was to complete a preliminary assessment of stream water quality, at the community-level, using a set of field indicators (i.e. oxygen content, total bacteriological flora and suspended load). Our findings concluded that the water quality is extremely variable depending on the location along the stream and the prevailing rainfall and water flow conditions. Changes in water quality were affected by an uncertain balance between potential self-cleaning processes in the stream environment and human pressure in the riparian zone (i.e. urbanization, riparian vegetation removal, wastewater discharges, stream flow extractions). Several interesting observations were noted that influence water quality: (i) high bacteria and turbidity levels were related to free ranging livestock roaming near the stream in isolated areas; (ii) very low oxygen content and high bacteriological contamination downstream of small remote villages due to low stream discharge and poor sanitation conditions; (iii) high bacteria levels along continuously urbanized reaches; (iv) low oxygen content following organic-rich wastewater inflows from a small agro-factory; (v) very high suspended load and bacteria levels during flood events due to soil erosion of steep cultivated hillslopes. Besides pollution related to these human activities we also noted “naturally” metal-rich stream water when crossing swampy areas fed by dysoxic groundwater. We propose a set of pro-poor recommendations to improve or maintain good stream water quality in the uplands and for environmentally friendly management of surface water resources.

Abstract

International audience; The Vietnam War played a decisive role in the pre-1990s deforestation of the lower Mekong Basin, which in turn likely influenced regional broad-scale hydrology. This note presents and discusses new analyses that strengthen this thesis. Although concurrent overestimation of discharge and underestimation of rainfall, a couple of years after bombing climaxed in the early 1970s, could theoretically explain the sharp rise in water yield previously attributed to bomb-induced deforestation, new observations suggest that bombing has durably modified the landscape: by 2002, degraded forests still largely overlapped with areas heavily bombed 30 years earlier. This corroborates observed long-term hydrological changes and suggests that warfare-induced deforestation has more profound and durable hydrological effects than previously thought.

Abstract

International audience; Trunk phloem necrosis (TPN) is a major constraint in rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations. Current knowledge supports a scenario of a multi-factor physiological 'disease' caused by an accumulation of endogenous and exogenous stresses. Without evidence of a pathogen, the apparent spread of the syndrome from tree to tree along the planting line, strongly suggested the implication of a major local soil constraint. The objectives of the study were to address, within a plot, three points of the above scenario: the short-distance aggregation of affected trees; their correspondence with local micro-areas facing the highest environmental constraints; and the relative weakness of TPN trees that had accumulated several stresses since planting. The study was conducted in a young rubber tree stand (clone RRIM 600) of Northeast Thailand, where the number of TPN affected individuals was 8% after 3 years of tapping. Trunk girth and trunk basal area were used as indicators of local environmental constraints. Spatial patterns were analysed using the framework of marked point processes and K functions. The results confirmed the short-distance aggregation of TPN affected trees. But, TPN trees were not located within micro-areas where trees had a lower trunk basal area than average. Hence, the clusters of TPN do not occur in the most constraining environmental micro-areas of the plot in terms of growth since planting. Moreover, from comparison of girth, current girth increment and height of bark consumption, we infer that TPN trees were not smaller and less vigorous than other trees before the syndrome outbreak. Finally, our conclusions mean the previous scenario driven by major soil constraints becomes a 'more complex scenario' in which specific soil conditions (not the most constraining in term of cumulated growth), possibly in interaction with inter-individual competition, induce a late and subtle stress favouring a necrotic reaction against tapping stress.

Abstract

International audience; Based on two case studies conducted at local sites in Northern Thailand and Lao PDR, the objectives of this paper are (i) to assess whether conditions for the establishment of PES at the watershed level exist in the uplands of mainland SE Asia and (ii) to examine and discuss limitations that are likely to impinge on direct transfer of the PES concept as well as the institutional adaptations and support that are required for the successful implementation of PES markets in this regional context. The study's main findings are that: (i) acceptance of PES principles and constraints are directly related to stakeholders' perception of their land rights irrespective of their actual rights; (ii) willingness to pay (WTP) is very low among local stakeholders, making any PES market unlikely to emerge without external support; (iii) the classical scheme for watershed services hardly applies in its original form because environmental service (ES) providers and buyers are generally the same people; (iv) where potential ES buyers feel that ES providers are better-off or wealthier than them, they do not have any WTP for ES; (v) good governance, including a strong liaising at various levels between people and the authorities is a strong prerequisite for the successful establishment of PES markets, even without direct government funding.

Management of soil erosion and water resources in the uplands of Lao P.D.R.; An Electrical Resistivity Tomography monitoring experiment was carried out in the uplands of Lao PDR in the Houay Pano experimental catchment. By comparing data obtained from the calculated cross section of electrical resistivity with hand auger observations, the detailed soil organisation in such a complex mountainous environment was characterised. By comparing the seasonal variation of ground electrical resistivity with the monitoring of groundwater level through a series of piezometer monitoring points, ground water fluxes along hillslopes can be measured precisely. Our study confirmed that stream water mainly corresponds to pre-event water stored in soils that is forced out by the infiltration of fresh rain water. The study also indicated that ground water recharge is larger for hillslopes with fallow vegetation than for cultivated hillslopes where soils are bare at the beginning of the rainy season suggesting the importance of surface cover on infiltration.
