Abstract

International audience; We investigate the maximum bottleneck matching problem in bipartite graphs. Given a bipartite graph with nonnegative edge weights, the problem is to determine a maximum cardinality matching in which the minimum weight of an edge is the maximum. To the best of our knowledge, there are two widely used solvers for this problem based on two different approaches. There exists a third known approach in the literature, which seems inferior to those two which is presumably why there is no implementation of it. We take this third approach, make theoretical observations to improve its behavior, and implement the improved method. Experiments with the existing two solvers show that their run time can be too high to be useful in many interesting cases. Furthermore, their performance is not predictable, and slight perturbations of the input graph lead to considerable changes in the run time. On the other hand, the proposed solver's performance is much more stable; it is almost always faster than or comparable to the two existing solvers, and its run time always remains low.

Abstract

Even when environments deteriorate gradually, ecosystems may shift abruptly from one state to another. Such catastrophic shifts are difficult to predict and reverse (hysteresis). While well studied in simplified contexts, we lack a general understanding of how catastrophic shifts spread in realistic spatial contexts. For different types of landscape structure, including typical terrestrial modular and riverine dendritic networks, we here investigate landscape-scale stability in metapopulations made of bistable patches. We find that such metapopulations usually exhibit large scale catastrophic shifts and hysteresis, and that the properties of these shifts depend strongly on metapopulation spatial structure and dispersal rate: intermediate dispersal rates and a riverine spatial structure can largely reduce hysteresis size. Interestingly, our study suggests that large-scale restoration is easier with spatially clustered restoration efforts and in populations characterized by an intermediate dispersal rate.

Abstract

We provide an algorithm to compute an effective description of the homology of complex projective hypersurfaces relying on Picard-Lefschetz theory. Next, we use this description to compute high-precision numerical approximations of the periods of the hypersurface. This is an improvement over existing algorithms as this new method allows for the computation of periods of smooth quartic surfaces in an hour on a laptop, which could not be attained with previous methods. The general theory presented in this paper can be generalised to varieties other than just hypersurfaces, such as elliptic fibrations as showcased on an example coming from Feynman graphs. International audience; Cette étude vise à comprendre les facteurs qui influencent l'intention des jeunes à utiliser le métavers en s'appuyant sur différents modèles théoriques d'adoption des technologies.Les résultats indiquent que l'utilité professionnelle perçue, l'utilité sociale perçue, les normes sociales et l'attitude à l'égard du métavers sont positivement liées à l'intention d'utiliser cette technologie chez les jeunes alors que la facilité d'utilisation perçue n'a pas d'influence significative sur cette intention. Ces résultats vont à l'encontre de certains modèles théoriques qui mettent l'accent sur la facilité d'utilisation comme facteur clé de l'adoption d'une technologie.

Abstract

Animal venoms and other protein-based secretions that perform a variety of functions, from predation to defense, are highly complex cocktails of bioactive compounds. Gene duplication, accompanied by modification of the expression and/or function of one of the duplicates under the action of positive selection, followed by further duplication to produce multigene families of toxins is a well-documented process in venomous animals. This evolutionary model has been less described in parasitoid wasps, which use maternal fluids, including venom, to protect their eggs from encapsulation by the host immune system. Here, we evidence the convergent recruitment and accelerated evolution of two multigene families of RhoGAPs presumably involved in virulence in two unrelated parasitoid wasp species, Leptopilina boulardi (Figitidae) and Venturia canescens (Icheumonidae). In both species, these RhoGAPs are associated with vesicles that act as transport systems to deliver virulence factors, but are produced in different tissues: the venom gland in Leptopilina sp. and the ovarian calyx in V. canescens. We show that the gene encoding the cellular RacGAP1 is at the origin of the virulent RhoGAP families found in Leptopilina sp. and V. canescens. We also show that both RhoGAP families have undergone evolution under positive selection and that almost all of these RhoGAPs lost their GAP activity and GTPase binding ability due to mutations in key amino acids. These results suggest an accelerated evolution and functional diversification of these vesicle-associated RhoGAPs in the two phylogenetically distant parasitoid species. The potential new function(s) and the exact mechanism of action of these proteins in host cells remain to be elucidated.; Les venins d'animaux et d'autres sécrétions à base de protéines qui remplissent diverses fonctions, de la prédation à la défense, sont des cocktails très complexes de composés bioactifs. La duplication des gènes, accompagnée d'une modification de l'expression et/ou de la fonction de l'une des duplications sous l'action de la sélection positive, suivie d'une nouvelle duplication pour produire des familles multigéniques de toxines, est un processus bien documenté chez les animaux venimeux. Ce modèle évolutif a été moins décrit chez les guêpes parasitoïdes, qui utilisent les fluides maternels, y compris le venin, pour protéger leurs œufs de l'encapsulation par le système immunitaire de l'hôte. Nous démontrons ici le recrutement convergent et l'évolution accélérée de deux familles multigéniques de RhoGAPs probablement impliquées dans la virulence chez deux espèces de guêpes parasitoïdes non apparentées, Leptopilina boulardi (Figitidae) et Venturia canescens (Icheumonidae). Chez les deux espèces, ces RhoGAP sont associées à des vésicules qui agissent comme des systèmes de transport pour délivrer les facteurs de virulence, mais elles sont produites dans des tissus différents : la glande à venin chez Leptopilina sp. et le calice ovarien chez V. canescens. Nous montrons que le gène codant pour la RacGAP1 cellulaire est à l'origine des familles de RhoGAP virulentes trouvées chez Leptopilina sp. et V. canescens. Nous montrons également que les deux familles RhoGAP ont subi une évolution sous sélection positive et que presque toutes ces RhoGAP ont perdu leur activité GAP et leur capacité de liaison à la GTPase en raison de mutations dans des acides aminés clés. Ces résultats suggèrent une évolution accélérée et une diversification fonctionnelle de ces RhoGAP associées aux vésicules chez les deux espèces de parasitoïdes phylogénétiquement éloignées. Les nouvelles fonctions potentielles et le mécanisme d'action exact de ces protéines dans les cellules hôtes restent à élucider.

Abstract

International audience; Carbon concentration and distribution has a dramatic impact on mechanical properties of steel. The manufacture technology of ancient steel is an important question in archaeometallurgy, especially during medieval times when the production process evolves between indirect and direct modes. Steel is an iron alloy incorporating up to a few % of carbon in weight, heterogeneously clustered in various carbide phases that are usually imaged by metallographic microscopy after acid etching. We have investigated the capability to obtain in a direct, non-destructive way and quantitative maps of carbon in steel samples using the 12C(d,pγ)13C reaction with the simultaneous detection of the emission of the 3089 keV γ-ray (d-PIGE) and of the p0 proton group (d-NRA). Carbon spot measurements and mappings were carried out using an external deuteron microbeam of 1.5 MeV at the New AGLAE facility of the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France. The beam diameter on the target was around 50 µm and its mean intensity 4nA, monitored by using the PIXE signal (Fe Kα line) emitted by the sample. Spectra were fitted using the SIMNRA program and the calculated composition checked against standard reference steel targets. Carbon distribution maps were extracted from the collected γ-ray and proton spectra datacubes. Spot measurements acquired in 2 min yielded a limit of detection of 200 ppm carbon weight for d-PIGE and 10 ppm for d-NRA. Proton detection appeared more effective than γ-ray detection owing to better statistics, mainly due to higher detection efficiency and better S/N ratio while γ-rays detection is affected by the spurious emission from nitrogen contained in the exit foil. Carbon concentration was mapped on a medieval archaeological iron alloy sample (140 × 32 points, 7 mm × 1.6 mm area) using a 1.6 sec dwell time, yielding a carbon content of 0.395 % with an uncertainty of 10 %. Heterogeneities could be evidenced in the maps, and incidentally the presence of oxygen. A simple methodology was developed to derive the depth distribution maps of carbon in the first microns of the sample.

9. Effet de la couleur et de l'intensité lumineuse sur le stress de la crevette Litopenaeus vannamei

Abstract

National audience; Les facteurs physiques de l’environnement subis quotidiennement par les animaux de laboratoire influencent leur comportement et leur physiologie. La lumière peut être une source de stress potentielle, notamment par certaines longueurs d’ondes et par son intensité. Des études menées sur des crustacés montrent qu’ils sont moins stressés quand ils sont éclairés par des couleurs rouge et orange à basse intensité lumineuse. L’objectif de notre étude est de déterminer les couleurs et l’intensité lumineuse les moins stressantes pour la crevette Litopenaeus vannamei. Dans une première expérience nous avons utilisé des lumières rouge, orange, jaune, verte, bleu ou violette à intensité lumineuse constante de 83 Lux pendant 15min, nous avons étudié le temps passé immobile ou en mouvement, le long des parois (thigmotactisme) ou dans la totalité du bassin, la vitesse moyenne, et le nombre de loopings, sursauts et battements d’yeux. Les couleurs rouge et orange sont celles avec lesquelles les crevettes étaient les plus mobiles, dans la totalité du bassin, avec la vitesse la plus faible, et avec lesquelles elles faisaient le moins de loopings, sursauts et battements d’yeux. Ces couleurs semblent donc être les moins stressantes parmi les couleurs testées. Ensuite, nous avons étudié l’effet de l’intensité lumineuse, 17, 64, 170 et 430 Lux, pour la couleur orange sur les mêmes paramètres que pour l’expérience précédente. Nous n’avons pas mis en évidence de différence de stress pour les intensités testées. Une dernière expérience réalisée dans un dispositif optomoteur vise à déterminer le spectre des couleurs visibles par des crevettes L. vannamei. En conclusion, il apparait que les conditions lumineuses les moins stressantes pour étudier le comportement des crevettes L. vannamei sont un éclairage orange ou rouge, peu importe l’intensité lumineuse. Cette expérience est novatrice car les préférences visuelles de Litopenaeus vannamei en termes de couleurs et d’intensités lumineuses étaient pour l’heure inconnues. Ces résultats permettront de mener des expériences sur ces animaux dans des conditions moins stressantes, et donc plus représentatives de leur comportement en milieu naturel.

Abstract

La question du rapport des géographes à la ville, de leur urba-phobie ou –philie, a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs travaux, que nous proposons de prolonger. Notre communication vise à mettre au jour les inquiétudes et attitudes ambigües qui animent le discours de la géographie d’une grande décennie 1960, période où les problèmes liés à la croissance urbaine française se manifestent de manière accrue dans le débat public et dans les politiques publiques (création du Ministère de l’Equipement, vote de la Loi d’orientation foncière, etc.). Sans mettre à l’écart toute la charge scientifique des discours tenus par les praticiens de la discipline, c’est néanmoins plutôt sur la dimension axiologique, normative et politique que nous souhaitons insister. De nombreux textes de la période relèvent en effet d’une forme discursive mixte (articles scientifiques mêlés de considérations normatives, de propositions dirigées vers le champ de l’action) voire, parfois, du genre de la tribune, de la polémique ou de l’intervention. Beaucoup de ces textes paraissent d’ailleurs en marge des revues savantes, dans des publications proches de sphères réformatrices (catholicisme social, par exemple). On montrera que chez les géographes des années 1960, le rythme et les formes de l’urbanisation ont suscité des réactions ambivalentes. Elles révèlent toute une série de référentiels et de représentations auxquels adhèrent les géographes et qui déterminent un point de vue politique sur ce que devrait être, ou non, la ville future : fort attachement à une vision « humaniste », valorisation de l’équilibre et de la mesure, respect de la diversité urbaine et régionale, etc. Finalement, cette communication a pour objectif de préciser les termes du débat sur l’urbaphobie ou l’urbaphilie des géographes, en soulignant que la réponse se trouve peut-être dans une voie médiane entre ces deux attitudes.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Preoperative COVID-19 has been associated with excess postoperative morbi-mortality. Consequently, guidelines were developed that recommended the postponement of surgery for at least 7 weeks after the infection. We hypothesised that vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 and the large predominance of the Omicron variant attenuated the effect of a preoperative COVID-19 on the occurrence of postoperative respiratory morbidity.Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study in 41 French centres between 15 March and 30 May 2022 (ClinicalTrials NCT05336110), aimed at comparing the postoperative respiratory morbidity between patients with and without preoperative COVID-19 within 8 weeks prior to surgery. The primary outcome was a composite outcome combining the occurrence of pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, unexpected mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary embolism within the first 30 postoperative days. Secondary outcomes were 30-day mortality, hospital length-of-stay, readmissions, and non-respiratory infections. The sample size was determined to have 90% power to identify a doubling of the primary outcome rate. Adjusted analyses were performed using propensity score modelling and inverse probability weighting.Findings: Of the 4928 patients assessed for the primary outcome, of whom 92.4% were vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2, 705 had preoperative COVID-19. The primary outcome was reported in 140 (2.8%) patients. An 8-week preoperative COVID-19 was not associated with increased postoperative respiratory morbidity (odds ratio 1.08 [95% CI 0.48-2.13]; p = 0.83). None of the secondary outcomes differed between the two groups. Sensitivity analyses concerning the timing between COVID-19 and surgery, and the clinical presentations of preoperative COVID-19 did not show any association with the primary outcome, except for COVID-19 patients with ongoing symptoms the day of surgery (OR 4.29 [1.02-15.8]; p = 0.04).Interpretation: In our Omicron-predominant, highly immunised population undergoing general surgery, a preoperative COVID-19 was not associated with increased postoperative respiratory morbidity.

Abstract

Contexte : l'adolescence est une étape singulière entre enfance et âge adulte, accompagnée de problématiques propres. En pleine évolution corporelle et sociale, l’adolescent peut être difficile à appréhender pour les médecins généralistes. L’objectif de cette étude était d'explorer les représentations et les attentes des adolescents en consultation de médecine générale.Méthodes : il s’agit d’une étude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés individuels et collectifs, menée de juin à juillet 2022. Le recrutement s’est fait lors d’interventions dans trois établissements scolaires de la région PACA. Une triangulation des données a été effectuée.Résultats : au total, quarante-deux adolescents ont été inclus, quinze en entretiens individuels et vingt-sept répartis en trois entretiens collectifs. Cette étude montre que si les adolescents restent ambivalents pour faire certains choix, ils ont une idée du portrait de leur MT idéal et souhaitent une réciprocité avec lui quant à l’utilisation du vouvoiement ou du tutoiement. Ils naviguent entre le réconfort de la présence parentale et leur désir d’autonomie. La relation triangulaire adolescent - parents - MT doit concilier le droit de regard du parent et le droit au secret médical de l’adolescent. Un temps de consultation sans le parent reste apprécié par les adolescents. Ces derniers.ne considèrent pas leur médecin traitant (MT) comme un interlocuteur privilégié en matière de prévention, surtout concernant la sexualité. En revanche, ils expriment pouvoir se confier librement mais c’est au MT d’engager la discussion.Conclusion : proposer un échange équilibré avec les adolescents, leur rappeler leur droit en matière de secret médical et initier le dialogue quant aux sujets de prévention pourraient favoriser un dialogue serein et dans un climat de confiance. Informer les adolescents sur le rôle du médecin généraliste et les consultations prises en charges par l’Assurance Maladie pourrait favoriser les consultations de prévention et dépistage. Être conscient des idées reçues des adolescents pourrait guider la pratique clinique des médecins généralistes.

International audience; A pentadentate-[N3O2] ligand, H2LNMe2, formed by condensation of diacetyl pyridine and dimethylcarbamoyl hydrazide (i. e. Me2NCONHNH2), is reported to yield mononuclear pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) metal complexes with CrIII, MnII, FeII, CoII, and NiII, that exhibit good solubility in a wide range of solvents as compared to the classically used H2LR ligands. With CuII, dinuclear complexes were obtained. The potassium salt of the deprotonated ligand, K2LNMe2, was also characterized. The reported complexes consist of [CrH2LNMe2Cl2] ⋅ Cl; Cat[CrLNMe2(CN)2] (Cat=K+ or PNP+); [MH2LNMe2(H2O)2] ⋅ (ClO4)2 with M=MnII, CoII, or NiII; [FeH2LNMe2(MeCN)2] ⋅ (PF6)2 ⋅ MeCN; [FeH2LNMe2(MeOH)X] ⋅ X (X=Br or I); [{CuH2LNMe2}2(MeOH)(ClO4)] ⋅ (ClO4)3 ⋅ 1H2O⋅1.75H2O; [CuHLNMe2]2 ⋅ (ClO4)2 ⋅ H2O; and [CuH2LNMe2(H2O)]2 ⋅ (ClO4)4 ⋅ 5H2O. The magnetic behaviors of the PBP derivatives were assessed, especially the zero-field splitting (ZFS) characteristics for the CrIII, FeII, CoII, and NiII derivatives. The ZFS characteristics were also determined from ab initio theoretical calculations. The obtained values confirm those extracted from magnetic measurements.

Abstract

International audience; Objectives: We aimed at assessing the efficacy and safety on antibiotics exposure of a strategy combining a respiratory multiplex PCR (mPCR) with enlarged panel and daily procalcitonin (PCT) measurements, as compared with a conventional strategy, in critically ill adult patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia.Methods: This multicentre, parallel-group, open-label, randomised controlled trial enrolled patients admitted to 13 intensive care units (ICU) in France. Patients were assigned (1:1) to the control strategy, where antibiotic streamlining remained at the discretion of the physicians, or interventional strategy, consisting of using mPCR and daily PCT measurements within the first seven days of randomisation to streamline initial antibiotic therapy, with antibiotic continuation encouraged when PCT was > 1 ng/mL and discouraged if < 1 ng/mL or decreased by 80% from baseline. All patients underwent conventional microbiological tests and cultures. The primary end-point was antibiotic-free days at day 28.Results: Between April 20st and November 23st 2020, 194 patients were randomised, of whom 191 were retained in the intention-to-treat analysis. Respiratory bacterial coinfection was detected in 48.4% (45/93) and 21.4% (21/98) in the interventional and control group, respectively. The number of antibiotic-free days was 12.0 (0.0; 25.0) and 14.0 (0.0; 24.0) days, respectively (difference -2.0, (95% CI -10.6 to 6.6), P=0.89). Superinfection rates were high (51.6% and 48.5%, respectively). Mortality rates and ICU lengths of stay did not differ between groups.Conclusion: In severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, the mPCR/PCT algorithm strategy did not affect 28-day antibiotics exposure nor the major clinical outcomes, as compared with routine practice.

Abstract

As part of the third Gaia data release, we present the contributions of the non-stellar and classification modules from the eighth coordination unit (CU8) of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, which is responsible for the determination of source astrophysical parameters using Gaia data. This is the third in a series of three papers describing the work done within CU8 for this release. Aims. For each of the five relevant modules from CU8, we summarise their objectives, the methods they employ, their performance, and the results they produce for Gaia DR3. We further advise how to use these data products and highlight some limitations. Methods. The Discrete Source Classifier (DSC) module provides classification probabilities associated with five types of sources: quasars, galaxies, stars, white dwarfs, and physical binary stars. A subset of these sources are processed by the Outlier Analysis (OA) module, which performs an unsupervised clustering analysis, and then associates labels with the clusters to complement the DSC classification. The Quasi Stellar Object Classifier (QSOC) and the Unresolved Galaxy Classifier (UGC) determine the redshifts of the sources classified as quasar and galaxy by the DSC module. Finally, the Total Galactic Extinction (TGE) module uses the extinctions of individual stars determined by another CU8 module to determine the asymptotic extinction along all lines of sight for Galactic latitudes |b| > 5 deg. Results. Gaia DR3 includes 1591 million sources with DSC classifications; 56 million sources to which the OA clustering is applied; 1.4 million sources with redshift estimates from UGC; 6.4 million sources with QSOC redshift; and 3.1 million level 9 HEALPixes of size 0.013 squared degree, where the extinction is evaluated by TGE.

Abstract

International audience; This article presents the epigraphic data relating to the history of Buddhist vihāras over the territory of the ancient kingdom of Campā, in present Vietnam. We will consider how the way in which vihāras figure epigraphically evolves over time, from the 7th to the 14th century CE and attempt to shed light on the long-term integration of vihāras into a socio-economic network of foundations and endowments, revealing of the status that Buddhism occupied within society. We will also discuss the nature of the institution(s) or structure(s) that the term vihāra designated in Campā, in connection with the paradoxical absence of clearly identifiable vihāras in the archeological record, focusing on the Buddhist sanctuary of Ðồng Dương. This leads us to reflect on the specific organization of the Cham vihāras, and on the forms of monastic life that the term vihāra implies. We pursue this reflection by comparing it with the term kuṭi, which appears in epigraphy from the 11th century, always in close conjunction with the term vihāra, in a manner that invites comparison with the use of the same terms on the island of Java.

Abstract

The BIO-MAÏDO (Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo (Réunion Island): processes and impacts on secondary organic aerosols formation) campaign was conducted from the 13th of March to the 4th of April 2019 on the tropical Réunion Island and implied several scientific teams and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The campaign was part of the BIO-MAÏDO project with the main objective is to improve our understanding of cloud impacts on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) precursors in a tropical environment. Instruments were deployed at five sites: a receptor site, the Maïdo observatory (MO) at 2165 m asl, and four sites along the slope of the Maïdo mountain. The obtained dataset includes measurements of the gas-phase mixings ratio of volatile organic compounds (VOC), the characterization of the physical, chemical, and biological (bacterial diversity) properties of aerosols and the characterization of the physical, chemical and biological (identification of viable bacteria through culture-based approaches) properties of the cloud water. In addition, the turbulent parameters of the boundary layer, radiative fluxes, and emissions fluxes of BVOC from the surrounding vegetation were measured to help with the interpretation of the observed chemical concentrations in the different phases. Dynamical analyses using back-trajectories show two preferred trajectories routes for air masses arriving at MO during the daytime both corresponding to the return branches of the trade winds associated with the up-slopes thermal breezes, and both influenced by marine boundary layer and endemic forest below the Maïdo observatory. Additional analysis based on a high-resolution Meso-NH simulation for a typical cloudy day indicates that air masses sampled at MO likely encountered cloud processing during its transport along the slope. The highest mixing ratio of oxygenated VOC (OVOC) were measured above the site located in the endemic forest and the highest contribution of OVOC to total VOC at MO. Chemical composition of particles during the daytime shows that organic aerosol is more oxidized at MO than at other sites along the slope. This is a signature of photochemical aerosols aging along the slope. A higher concentration of oxalic acid at a site below MO indicates this oxidation occurs potentially through cloud processing. Despite an in-depth analysis of organic compounds in cloud water, around 80% on average of dissolved organic compounds is undefined highlighting the complexity of the cloud organic matter. The BIO-MAÏDO project is focusing on the analysis of observations and processes using numerical simulations: a 0D cloud chemistry model including biodegradation by bacteria in cloud water and a high-resolution 3D model coupling dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes.

Abstract

The Gaia Radial Velocity Spectrometer provides the unique opportunity of a spectroscopic analysis of millions of stars at medium-resolution in the near-infrared. This wavelength range includes the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), which is a good diagnostics of magnetic activity in the chromosphere of late-type stars. Here we present the method devised for inferring the Gaia stellar activity index together with its scientific validation. A sample of well studied PMS stars is considered to identify the regime in which the Gaia stellar activity index may be affected by mass accretion. The position of these stars in the colour-magnitude diagram and the correlation with the amplitude of the photometric rotational modulation is also scrutinised. Three regimes of the chromospheric stellar activity are identified, confirming suggestions made by previous authors on much smaller $R'_{\rm HK}$ datasets. The highest stellar activity regime is associated with PMS stars and RS CVn systems, in which activity is enhanced by tidal interaction. Some evidence of a bimodal distribution in MS stars with $T_{\rm eff}\ge$ 5000 K is also found, which defines the two other regimes, without a clear gap in between. Stars with 3500 K$\le T_{\rm eff} \le$ 5000 K are found to be either very active PMS stars or active MS stars with a unimodal distribution in chromospheric activity. Abstract

International audience; Species dispersal and resource spatial flows greatly affect the dynamics of connected ecosystems. So far, research on meta-ecosystems has mainly focused on the quantitative effect of subsidy flows. Yet, resource exchanges at heterotrophicautotrophic (e.g. aquatic-terrestrial) ecotones display a stoichiometric asymmetry that likely matters for functioning. Here, we joined ecological stoichiometry and the meta-ecosystem framework to understand how subsidy stoichiometry mediates the response of the meta-ecosystem to subsidy flows. Our model results demonstrate that resource flows between ecosystems can induce a positive spatial feedback loop, leading to higher production at the meta-ecosystem scale by relaxing local ecosystem limitations (‘spatial complementarity’). Furthermore, we show that spatial flows can also have an unexpected negative impact on production when accentuating the stoichiometric mismatch between local resources and basal species needs. This study paves the way for studies on the interdependency of ecosystems at the landscape extent.

International audience; Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infects half of the world population and is responsible for gastric, duodenal ulcers and gastric cancer. The eradication of Hp cures ulcers and prevents ulcer recurrences and gastric cancer. Antibiotic resistance of Hp, and particularly clarithromycin resistance, is the primary cause of treatment failure and is a major concern identified by the WHO as a high priority requiring research into new strategies. Treatments guided by the detection of antibiotic resistance have proven their medical and economical superiority. However, this strategy is severely hampered by the invasive nature of the fibroscopy, since antibiotic resistance detection requires gastric biopsies. The eradication of Hp involves primary care physicians. The objective of this study will be to evaluate the feasibility of a strategy for the management of Hp infection in primary care by a recently developed non-invasive procedure and its non-inferiority in eradication rates compared with the strategy recommended by the French National Authority of Health. The non-invasive procedure is a PCR on stool to detect Hp infection and mutations conferring resistance to clarithromycin allowing a treatment guided by the results of the PCR. We present the protocol of a prospective, multicenter, randomized, controlled interventional study in two arms.

International audience; An organic ambipolar charge trapping non-volatile memory device is proposed based on tris(8-hydroxy quinoline) aluminum(Alq3)/ fullerene(C60)/pentacene double heterojunctions. The double heterojunctions were analyzed and compared with the sole heterojunction. Even though the Alq3/pentacene sole heterojunction shows a negative threshold voltage shift for programming under negative biasing, light illumination is required to efficiently erase. In contrast, for C60/pentacene sole heterojunction, the negative shift of threshold voltage is observed even with a positive erasing voltage. By combining the two trapping layers, a large memory window with fully-electrical programming and erasing is obtained. The efficient programming and erasing of the double heterojunctions structure are analyzed, sufficient electrons can be injected that enables the electrical erasing, and the negative shift of the threshold voltage under positive erasing voltage for the C60/pentacene structure is suppressed due to the suppression of the large built-in potential for the sole heterojunction, which can be verified by a large positive shift for the pentacene/C60/pentacene double heterojunctions.

Abstract

The mammalian spinal cord functions as a community of glial and neuronal cell types to accomplish sensory processing, autonomic control, and movement; conversely, the dysfunction of these cell types following spinal cord injury or disease states can lead to chronic pain, paralysis, and death. While we have made great strides in understanding spinal cellular diversity in animal models, it is crucial to characterize human biology directly to uncover specialized features of basic function and to illuminate human pathology. Here, we present a cellular taxonomy of the adult human spinal cord using single nucleus RNA-sequencing with spatial transcriptomics and antibody validation. We observed 29 glial clusters, including rare cell types such as ependymal cells, and 35 neuronal clusters, which we found are organized principally by anatomical location. To demonstrate the potential of this resource for understanding human disease, we analyzed the transcriptome of spinal motoneurons that are prone to degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other diseases. We found that, compared with all other spinal neurons, human motoneurons are defined by genes related to cell size, cytoskeletal structure, and ALS, thereby supporting a model of a specialized motoneuron molecular repertoire that underlies their selective vulnerability to disease. We include a publicly available browsable web resource with this work, in the hope that it will catalyze future discoveries about human spinal cord biology.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop a new method for testing the immunity of active implantable medical devices to low frequency industrial magnetic fields (between 50 Hz and 50 kHz) up to the high occupational exposure limits. It is based on an experimental approach using a specific test bench with the capability of reproducing real exposure situations and testing multiple orientations between the magnetic field and the device. The solution adopted was to combined 3 concentric Helmholtz coils on 3 perpendicular axes. The test bench was designed using a numerical simulation software. A good agreement between the numerical model and the test bench characterisation was observed. The determination of the interference threshold of a pacemaker as a function of the frequency (50 Hz to 50 kHz) is given as an example. The experimental results show between 50 Hz and 400 Hz an interference threshold between the public and the occupational exposure limits. Between 400 Hz and 50 kHz, no malfunction below the occupational high exposure limits was observed. The encountered malfunctions are completely reversible. It also appears that the occurrence of interferences strongly depends on the magnetic field orientation. This new test method will be applied to several pacemakers and could be used or adapted to other active medical implants such as cardioverter defibrillators or neurostimulators.

Given a complex analytic germ $(X, 0)$ in $(\mathbb C^n, 0)$, the standard Hermitian metric of $\mathbb C^n$ induces a natural arc-length metric on $(X, 0)$, called the inner metric. We study the inner metric structure of the germ of an isolated complex surface singularity $(X,0)$ by means of an infinite family of numerical analytic invariants, called inner rates. Our main result is a formula for the Laplacian of the inner rate function on a space of valuations, the non-archimedean link of $(X,0)$. We deduce in particular that the global data consisting of the topology of $(X,0)$, together with the configuration of a generic hyperplane section and of the polar curve of a generic plane projection of $(X,0)$, completely determine all the inner rates on $(X,0)$, and hence the local metric structure of the germ. Abstract

De novo variants in QRICH1 (Glutamine-rich protein 1) has recently been reported in 11 individuals with intellectual disability. The function of QRICH1 is largely unknown but it is likely to play a key role in the unfolded response of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through transcriptional control of proteostasis. In this study, we present 27 additional individuals and delineate the clinical and molecular spectrum of the individuals (n=38) with QRICH1 variants. The main clinical features were mild to moderate developmental delay/intellectual disability (71%), non-specific facial dysmorphism (92%) and hypotonia (39%). Additional findings included poor weight gain (29%), short stature (29%), autism spectrum disorder (29%), seizures (24%) and scoliosis (18%). Minor structural brain abnormalities were reported in 52% of the individuals with brain imaging. Truncating or splice variants were found in 28 individuals and 10 had missense variants. Four variants were inherited from mildly affected parents. This study confirms that heterozygous QRICH1 variants cause a neurodevelopmental disorder including short stature and expands the phenotypic spectrum to include poor weight gain, scoliosis, hypotonia, minor structural brain anomalies, and seizures. Abstract

Solving linear equations of type $Ax=b$ for large sparse systems frequently emerges in science/engineering applications, which is the main bottleneck. In spite that the direct methods are costly in time and memory consumption, they are still the most robust way to solve these systems. Nowadays, increasing the amount of computational units for the supercomputers became trendy, while the memory available per core is reduced. Thus, when solving these linear equations, memory reduction becomes as important as time reduction. For this purpose, compression methods are introduced within sparse solvers to reduce both the memory and time consumption. In this respect, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is used to reach the smallest possible rank, but it is too costly in practice. Rank revealing QR decomposition variants are used as faster alternatives, which can introduce larger ranks. Among these variants, column pivoting or matrix rotation can be applied on the matrix $A$, such that the most important information in the matrix is gathered to the leftmost columns and the remaining unnecessary information can be omitted. For reducing the communication cost of the QR decomposition with column pivoting, blocking versions with randomization are suggested as an alternative to find the pivots. In these randomized variants, the matrix $A$ is projected on a lower dimensional matrix by using an i.i.d. Gaussian matrix so that the pivoting/rotational matrix can be computed on the lower dimensional matrix. In addition, to avoid unnecessary updates of the trailing matrix at each iteration, a truncated randomized method is suggested to be more efficient for larger matrix sizes. Thanks to these methods, closer results to SVD are obtained with reduced compression cost. In this report, we compare all these methods in terms of complexity, numerical stability, obtained rank, performance and accuracy., La résolution d'équations linéaires de type $Ax=b$ pour de grands systèmes creux apparaît fréquemment dans les applications scientifiques et constitue le principal goulot d'étranglement.Bien que les méthodes directes soient coûteuses en temps et en mémoire, elles restent la méthode la plus robuste pour résoudre certains de ces systèmes.De nos jours, on note une augmentation du nombre d'unités de calcul pour les superordinateurs alors que la mémoire disponible par cœur est réduite.Par conséquent, lors de la résolution de ces systèmes linéaires, la réduction de la mémoire devient aussi importante que la réduction du temps.À cette fin, des méthodes de compression pour les blocs denses, apparaissant lors de la factorisation des matrices creuses, ont été introduites pour réduire la consommation de mémoire, ainsi que le temps de résolution.En recherchant le rang de compression le plus faible possible, la décomposition en valeurs singulières (SVD) donne le résultat optimal.Elle est cependant trop coûteuse et nécessite une factorisation complète pour trouver le rang résultant.Les variantes de la décomposition QR sont moins coûteuses, mais peuvent conduire à des rangs plus importants.Parmi ces variantes, le pivotage des colonnes ou l'application d'une rotation peuvent être appliqués à la matrice $A$, de telle sorte que les informations les plus importantes de la matrice soient rassemblées dans les premières colonnes et de permettre de négliger le reste de la sous-matrice.Pour réduire le coût de communication de la décomposition QR classique avec pivotage des colonnes, des versions par bloc et utilisant des techniques de randomisation sont proposées comme solution alternative pour trouver les pivots.Dans ces variantes randomisées, la matrice $A$ est projetée sur une matrice de dimension beaucoup plus faible en utilisant une matrice gaussienne dont chaque variable aléatoire a la même distribution de probabilité que les autres et toutes sont mutuellement indépendantes.Ainsi, la matrice de pivotage/rotation peut être calculée en dimensions réduites.En outre, pour éviter les mises à jour inutiles sur la sous-matrice à chaque itération, une méthode randomisée tronquée est proposée et s'avère plus efficace pour les matrices de grande taille.Grâce à ces méthodes, des résultats proches de SVD peuvent être obtenus et le coût de la compression peut être réduit.Dans ce rapport, nous comparerons toutes ces méthodes en termes de complexité, stabilité numérique, rang obtenu, performance et précision.

Abstract

We present the General Stellar Parameterizer from Photometry (GSP-Phot), which is part of the astrophysical parameters inference system (Apsis). GSP-Phot is designed to produce a homogeneous catalogue of parameters for hundreds of millions of single non-variable stars based on their astrometry, photometry, and low-resolution BP/RP spectra. These parameters are effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, absolute $M_G$ magnitude, radius, distance, and extinction for each star. GSP-Phot uses a Bayesian forward-modelling approach to simultaneously fit the BP/RP spectrum, parallax, and apparent $G$ magnitude. A major design feature of GSP-Phot is the use of the apparent flux levels of BP/RP spectra to derive, in combination with isochrone models, tight observational constraints on radii and distances. We carefully validate the uncertainty estimates by exploiting repeat Gaia observations of the same source. The data release includes GSP-Phot results for 471 million sources with $G20$), mostly within 2kpc. Metallicity estimates exhibit substantial biases compared to literature values and are only useful at a qualitative level. However, we provide an empirical calibration of our metallicity estimates that largely removes these biases. Extinctions $A_0$ and $A_{\rm BP}$ show typical differences from reference values of 0.07-0.09 mag. MCMC samples of the parameters are also available for 95% of the sources. GSP-Phot provides a homogeneous catalogue of stellar parameters, distances, and extinctions that can be used for various purposes, such as sample selections (OB stars, red giants, solar analogues etc.)., 23 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

Gaia Data Release 3 contains a wealth of new data products for the community. Astrophysical parameters are a major component of this release. They were produced by the Astrophysical parameters inference system (Apsis) within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The aim of this paper is to describe the overall content of the astrophysical parameters in Gaia Data Release 3 and how they were produced. In Apsis we use the mean BP/RP and mean RVS spectra along with astrometry and photometry, and we derive the following parameters: source classification and probabilities for 1.6 billion objects, interstellar medium characterisation and distances for up to 470 million sources, including a 2D total Galactic extinction map, 6 million redshifts of quasar candidates and 1.4 million redshifts of galaxy candidates, along with an analysis of 50 million outlier sources through an unsupervised classification. The astrophysical parameters also include many stellar spectroscopic and evolutionary parameters for up to 470 million sources. These comprise Teff, logg, and m_h (470 million using BP/RP, 6 million using RVS), radius (470 million), mass (140 million), age (120 million), chemical abundances (up to 5 million), diffuse interstellar band analysis (0.5 million), activity indices (2 million), H-alpha equivalent widths (200 million), and further classification of spectral types (220 million) and emission-line stars (50 thousand). Abstract

Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. Abstract

International audience; The work presented here is an experimental and numerical study on a new technology called friction shims. Those are thin shim made of steel with a shape of washer. Their coating made of nickel and micro diamonds aim to increase the friction coefficient when located at the interface of two parts. The mechanical behaviour as well as the static and fatigue strengths of titanium bolted joints with this specific technology are presented in this study. Specimens are representative of hole-to-hole aeronautical joints, involving large clearance and misalignments. Specimen geometrical and material definition are presented as well as test set up. The experimental test results show limited impact on the static strength and a large increase in the fatigue strength. A numerical analysis based on the finite element method was developed and correlated with the experiments to provides complementary information and to understand the mechanical behaviour observed during the static tests and the gain in fatigue strength.

Abstract

The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. Abstract

International audience; Advances in nanotechnology have made it possible in recent years to develop strategies for rapid and sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria using new nanomaterials and the development of electronic nano-sensors. The detection of bacteria still faces problems such as long analysis time and complexity of the process. An alternative method is the use of biosensors, which combines a biological recognition mechanism with a physical transduction technique. Thus, a number of methods and manufacturing technologies have been developed in order to achieve performance in sensitivity, detection limit, label-free detection or real-time analysis. This review aims to focus on the state of the art of biosensors for the recognition elements of Escherichia coli in label-free biosensors with a particular focus on the beneficial use of nanomaterials and nano-objects for detection. Among the recent related biosensors based on nano-objects for E. coli detection, the technologies and measurement techniques are detailed by comparing their performances detection in terms of concentration range and detection limit. Detection becomes more sensitive and more flexible using nanoparticles as markers, and real-time electrical detection methods are dominant in comparison with optical ones. The lowest detection limit can be achieved for sensors based on metal (gold or silver nanoparticles) with optical detection techniques in contrast with electrical detection methods using measurement conductance.

Abstract

Purpose: Double inhibition of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) using a tyrosine kinase inhibitor plus a monoclonal antibody may be a novel treatment strategy for non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We assessed the efficacy and toxicity of afatinib + cetuximab versus afatinib alone in the first-line treatment of advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC. Patients and Methods: In this phase II, randomized, open-label study, patients with stage III/IV EGFR-positive NSCLC were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive afatinib (group A) or afatinib + cetuximab (group A + C). Oral afatinib 40 mg was given once daily; cetuximab 250 mg/m² was administered intravenously on day 15 of cycle 1, then every 2 weeks at 500 mg/m² for 6 months. The primary endpoint was time to treatment failure (TTF) rate at 9 months. Exploratory analysis of EGFR circulating tumor DNA in plasma was performed. Results: Between June 2016 and November 2018, 59 patients were included in group A and 58 in group A + C. The study was ended early after a futility analysis was performed. The percentage of patients without treatment failure at 9 months was similar for both groups (59.3% for group A vs. 64.9% for group A + C), and median TTF was 11.1 (95% CI, 8.5–14.1) and 12.9 (9.2–14.5) months, respectively. Other endpoints, including progression-free survival and overall survival, also showed no improvement with the combination versus afatinib alone. There was a slight numerical increase in grade ≥3 adverse events in group A + C. Allele frequency of the EGFR gene mutation in circulating tumor DNA at baseline was associated with shorter PFS, regardless of the treatment received. Conclusions: These results suggest that addition of cetuximab to afatinib does not warrant further investigation in treatment-naïve advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC.
