Abstract

Biomarkers undergo during maturation compositional and structural changes, often making their use for correlations between crude oils and the immature equivalents of their source rocks difficult. We have therefore tested in the case of two Italian oils originating from carbonate source rocks (Ponte Dirillo and Gela, Sicily) and an immature potential source rock from the Noto Formation (Piano Lupo, Late Rhaetian) whether porphyrins could provide information, independent from that given by terpanes and steroids. Indeed, although their terpane and steroid distributions, if one takes into account the difference in maturity level, suggest a common origin which is in agreement with geological data, the structural composition of the porphyrins shows a striking similarity for only the Ponte Dirillo crude oil and Piano Lupo potential source rock, the different distribution of porphyrins from the Gela crude oil suggesting a different origin and/or history

Abstract

Twenty-eight individual alkylporphyrins have been identified complexed by nickel, vanadyl, or copper in the Moroccan bituminous marl of Ouland Abdoun. A structural comparison of the composition of the nickel and vanadyl porphyrin fractions has shown substantial differences. The nickel porphyrins are strongly enriched in a whole variety of yet unidentified «etio» compounds, in cycloheptano components, and in rearranged products derived from algal chlorophyll c. The vanadyl fraction is enriched in 17-nor-DPEP (DPEP=deoxyphylloerythioetioporphyrin), presumably also derived from chlorophyll c, relative to classical C 32 -DPEP, which is major in the nickel fraction. A free base porphyrin fraction has been tentatively characterized and seems to be restricted to a mixture of «etioporphyrins». The reasons for these differences are still unelucidated; they may arise from a selective availability of metals at various stages of sedimentation or from a structure-dependent selectivity in metal insertion

Abstract

Petroporphyrins showing both a free C-7 position and a C-13 to C-17 substitution pattern typical of chlorophyll c fossils were isolated from two Cretaceous Moroccan oil shales. They may arise from chlorophyll c 3 or a related compound like the 7-formyl analog.

The isolation and structural determination (n.m.r., n.O.e., synthesis) of a C 33 member of the DPEP series from Boscan crude oil indicates that total reduction of the propionic side-chain of a precursor chlorophyll may occur during, the processes leading to oil formation.
