Abstract

Models describing the soil functioning are valuable tools for addressing challenging issues related to agricultural production, soil protection or biogeochemical cycles. Coupling models that address different scientific fields is actually required in order to develop numerical tools able to simulate the complex interactions and feed-backs occurring within a soil profile in interaction with climate and human activities. We present here a component-based modelling platform named “VSoil”, that aims at designing, developing, implementing and coupling numerical representation of biogeochemical and physical processes in soil, from the aggregate to the profile scales. The platform consists of four softwares, i) Vsoil_Processes dedicated to the conceptual description of processes and of their inputs and outputs, ii) Vsoil_Modules devoted to the development of numerical representation of elementary processes as modules, iii) Vsoil_Models which permits the coupling of modules to create models, iv) Vsoil_Player for the run of the model and the primary analysis of results. The platform is designed to be a collaborative tool, helping scientists to share not only their models, but also the scientific knowledge on which the models are built. The platform is based on the idea that processes of any kind can be described and characterized by their inputs (state variables required) and their outputs. The links between the processes are automatically detected by the platform softwares. For any process, several numerical representations (modules) can be developed and made available to platform users. When developing modules, the platform takes care of many aspects of the development task so that the user can focus on numerical calculations. Fortran2008 and C++ are the supported languages and existing codes can be easily incorporated into platform modules. Building a model from available modules simply requires selecting the processes being accounted for and for each process a module. During this task, the platform displays available modules and checks the compatibility between the modules. The model (main program) is automatically created when compatible modules have been selected for all the processes. A GUI is automatically generated to help the user providing parameters and initial situations. Numerical results can be immediately visualized, archived and exported. The platform also provides facilities to carry out sensitivity analysis. Parameters estimation and links with databases are being developed. The platform can be freely downloaded from the web site (http://www.inra.fr/sol_virtuel/) with a set of processes, variables, modules and models. However, it is designed so that any user can add its own components. Theses adds-on can be shared with co-workers by means of an export/import mechanism using the e-mail. The adds-on can also be made available to the whole community of platform users when developers asked for. A filtering tool is available to explore the content of the platform (processes, variables, modules, models).[br/]

Abstract

Human actions and climate change induce modifications in soils and hydrosystems that must be predicted and evaluated. The soil is a fragile component of the ecosystem and it plays an essential role for primary production and water quality. Modeling is a powerful tool to simulate physical, chemical and biological modifications of the soil. Comparing model outputs to long term experiments is absolutely necessary to evaluate our understanding of the soil plant atmosphere system functioning and thus our ability to predict its evolutions.

Abstract

International audience; This article presents QualiTree, a generic fruit tree model that can simulate the effects of various cultivation practices on the development and within-tree variability of fruit quality. These practices include fruit thinning, summer and winter pruning, irrigation and tree training. Combining both agronomic and physiology viewpoints, the model describes the tree as a set of objects—fruiting units organised into a tree architecture and viewed in detail, and other compartments viewed globally—that exchange carbon and are the targets of physiological functions that can be changed by cultivation practices. The complex effect of shoot removal on tree behaviour was subjected to a special modelling effort using the coordination theory. QualiTree combines existing models of fruit quality development and simple carbon allocation functions. Though parsimonious, it is able to express a high degree of variability of fruit quality criteria. Future developments of QualiTree relative to an extension of the range of fruit quality criteria and the effects of cultivation practices are also discussed

Abstract

Carbon allocation within a plant depends on complex rules linking source organs (mainly shoots) and sink organs (mainly roots and fruits). The complexity of these rules comes from both regulations and interactions between various plant processes involving carbon. This paper presents these regulations and interactions, and analyses how agricultural management can influence them. Ecophysiological models of carbon production and allocation are good tools for such analyses. The fundamental bases of these models are first presented, focusing on their underlying processes and concepts. Different approaches are used for modelling carbon economy. They are classified as empirical, teleonomic, driven by source-sink relationships, or based on transport and chemical/biochemical conversion concepts. These four approaches are presented with a particular emphasis on the regulations and interactions between organs and between processes. The role of plant architecture in carbon partitioning is also discussed and the interest of coupling plant architecture models with carbon allocation models is highlighted. As an illustration of carbon allocation models, a model developed for peach trees, describing carbon transfer within the plant, and based on source-sink and Münch transport theory is presented and used for analyzing the link between roots, shoots and reproductive compartments. On this basis, the consequences of fruit load or plant pruning on fruit and vegetative growth can be evaluated.
