K.K.K. acknowledges support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation., We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4−2015 (z d = 0.352). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of re ≲ 100 pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at z spec = 2.063 ± 0.005 showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, MUV, 1450 = −19.7 ± 0.2. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus, and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer the physical properties of the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass M✶ ≃ 109.2 M⊙. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. Abstract

We present a study of the intersection between the populations of star forming galaxies selected as either Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the redshift range 2.9 − 6.7 and within the same volume of universe sampled by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) behind the Hubble Frontier Fields lensing cluster A2744. We define three samples of star-forming galaxies: LBG galaxies with an LAE counterpart (92 galaxies), LBG galaxies without an LAE counterpart (408 galaxies), and LAE galaxies without an LBG counterpart (46 galaxies). All these galaxies are intrinsically faint because of the lensing nature of the sample (M1500 ≥ −20.5). The fraction of LAEs among all selected star-forming galaxies increases with redshift up to z ∼ 6 and decreases for higher redshifts, in agreement with previous findings. The evolution of LAE/LBG populations with UV magnitude and Lyα luminosity shows that the LAE selection is able to identify intrinsically UV faint galaxies with M1500 ≥ −15 that are typically missed in the deepest lensing photometric surveys. The LBG population seems to fairly represent the total population of star-forming galaxies down to M1500 ∼ −15. Galaxies with M1500 Lyα uv, whereas the opposite trend is observed within our sample for faint galaxies with M1500 > −17, including galaxies only detected by their Lyα emission, with a large scatter. These trends, previously observed in other samples of star-forming galaxies at high-z, are seen here for very faint M1500 ∼ −15 galaxies; that is, much fainter than in previous studies. The present results show no clear evidence for an intrinsic difference between the properties of the two populations selected as LBG and/or LAE. The observed trends could be explained by a combination of several phenomena, like the existence of different star-formation regimes, the dust content, the relative distribution and morphology of dust and stars, or the stellar populations.

Abstract

We present an updated strong-lensing analysis of the massive cluster Abell 370 (A370), continuing the work first presented in Lagattuta et al. (2017). In this new analysis, we take advantage of the deeper imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Frontier Fields program, as well as a large spectroscopic mosaic obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). Thanks to the extended coverage of this mosaic, we probe the full 3D distribution of galaxies in the field, giving us a unique picture of the extended structure of the cluster and its surroundings. Our final catalog contains 584 redshifts, representing the largest spectroscopic catalog of A370 to date. Constructing the model, we measure a total mass distribution that is quantitatively similar to our previous work -- though to ensure a low rms error in the model fit, we invoke a significantly large external shear term. Using the redshift catalog, we search for other bound groups of galaxies, which may give rise to a more physical interpretation of this shear. We identify three structures in narrow redshift ranges along the line of sight, highlighting possible infalling substructures into the main cluster halo. We also discover additional substructure candidates in low-resolution imaging at larger projected radii. More spectroscopic coverage of these regions (pushing close to the A370 virial radius) and more extended, high-resolution imaging will be required to investigate this possibility, further advancing the analysis of these interesting developments., Comment: 21 pages, plus 13 pages of additional figures and tables. 13 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

Recent studies have revealed intense UV metal emission lines in a modest sample of z>7 Lyman-alpha emitters, indicating a hard ionizing spectrum is present. If such high ionization features are shown to be common, it may indicate that extreme radiation fields play a role in regulating the visibility of Lyman-alpha in the reionization era. Here we present deep near-infrared spectra of seven galaxies with Lyman-alpha emission at 5.47 photometric targets. In nine sources we do not detect UV metal lines. However in the z=8.683 galaxy EGSY8p7, we detect a 4.6 sigma emission line in the narrow spectral window expected for NV 1243. The feature is unresolved (FWHM7 have now been shown to have intense UV line emission, suggesting that extreme radiation fields are commonplace among the Lyman-alpha population. Future observations with JWST will eventually clarify the origin of these features and explain their role in the visibility of Lyman-alpha in the reionization era., Comment: 15 pages, 3 tables and 7 figures. Abstract

We describe the search for Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) near the sub-millimeter bright starburst galaxy HFLS3 at $z$$=$6.34 and a study on the environment of this massive galaxy during the end of reionization.We performed two independent selections of LBGs on images obtained with the \textit{Gran Telescopio Canarias} (GTC) and the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) by combining non-detections in bands blueward of the Lyman-break and color selection. A total of 10 objects fulfilling the LBG selection criteria at $z$$>$5.5 were selected over the 4.54 and 55.5 arcmin$^2$ covered by our HST and GTC images, respectively. The photometric redshift, UV luminosity, and the star-formation rate of these sources were estimated with models of their spectral energy distribution. These $z$$\sim$6 candidates have physical properties and number densities in agreement with previous results. The UV luminosity function at $z$$\sim$6 and a Voronoi tessellation analysis of this field shows no strong evidence for an overdensity of relatively bright objects (m$_{F105W}$$, Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We report new constraints on the galaxy luminosity function at z~9 based on observations carried out with ESO/VLT FORS2, HAWK-I and X-Shooter around the lensing cluster A2667, as part of our project aimed at selecting z~7-10 candidates accessible to spectroscopy. Only one J-dropout source was selected in this field fulfilling the color and magnitude criteria. This source was recently confirmed as a mid-z interloper based on X-Shooter spectroscopy. The depth and the area covered by our survey are well suited to set strong constraints on the bright-end of the galaxy luminosity function and hence on the star formation history at very high redshift. The non-detection of reliable J-dropout sources over the ~36arcmin2 field of view towards A2667 was used to carefully determine the lens-corrected effective volume and the corresponding upper-limit on the density of sources. The strongest limit is obtained for Phi(M_{1500}=-21.4+/-0.50)-19.7 with fixed alpha=-1.74 and Phi*=1.10x10^{-3}Mpc^{-3}. The corresponding star formation rate density should be rho_{SFR}, 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abstract

We investigate the nature and the physical properties of z, Y and J-dropout galaxies selected behind the lensing cluster A2667. This field is part of our project aimed at identifying z~7-10 candidates accessible to spectroscopic studies, based on deep photometry with ESO/VLT HAWK-I and FORS2 (zYJH and Ks-band images, AB(3 sigma)~26-27) on a sample of lensing clusters extracted from our multi-wavelength combined surveys with SPITZER, HST, and Herschel. In this paper we focus on the complete Y and J-dropout sample, as well as the bright z-dropouts fulfilling the selection criteria by Capak et al. (2011). 10 candidates are selected within the common field of ~33 arcmin2 (effective area once corrected for contamination and lensing dilution). All of them are detected in H and Ks bands in addition to J and/or IRAC 3.6/4.5, with H(AB)~23.4 to 25.2, and have modest magnification factors. Although best-fit photometric redshifts place all these candidates at high-z, the contamination by low-z interlopers is estimated at 50-75% level based on previous studies, and the comparison with the blank-field WIRCAM Ultra-Deep Survey (WUDS). The same result is obtained when photometric redshifts include a luminosity prior, allowing us to remove half of the original sample as likely z~1.7-3 interlopers with young stellar pulations and strong extinction. Two additional sources among the remaining sample could be identified at low-z based on a detection at 24 microns and on the HST z_850 band. These low-z interlopers are not well described by current templates given the large break, and cannot be easily identified based solely on optical and near-IR photometry. Given the estimated dust extinction and high SFRs, some of them could be also detected in the IR or sub-mm bands. After correction for likely contaminants, the observed counts at z>7.5 seem to be in agreement with an evolving LF. (abridged), 18 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A
