International audience; In the field of spintronics, there are many reasons to use molecular tunnel barriers in devices such as low cost, flexibility and long spin life time in organic materials [1, 2]. What happens at the interfaces in these organic-inorganic hybrid systems is so relevant to the properties that a word has been proposed for it: spinterface [3]. The discrete nature of the molecular levels explains the variation of the magneto-transport properties with respect to the type of molecules and the nature of the interfaces [4]. To investigate such spinterface issues there is a need for very well-defined interfaces, which can be obtained in ultra-high vacuum conditions (UHV).The aim of this work is to realize model hybrid hetero-structures with a molecular monolayer as tunnel barrier between two ferromagnetic layers (spin valve). Modifying the way molecules are linked to the substrate, the crystallographic orientation of the substrate and the nature of the molecules are possible ways to modify the system spinterfaces. In this study, the grafting under UHV of the molecular layer (1-hexadecanethiol molecules, noted C16MT) on epitaxial ferromagnetic Fe (001) electrodes has been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To avoid the formation of pinholes during deposition of the Co ferromagnetic top electrode of the spin-valve, an original soft-landing technique has been used, based on the condensation at low temperature of a Xe layer on the self-assembled monolayer before metal deposition. The electrical homogeneity of the obtained junctions has been controlled from the micro to the nanoscale by Ballistic Electron Emission Microscopy (BEEM) [5]. Investigation of the magnetotransport properties of these model spin- valves is in progress and will be confronted to the precise analysis of the system bottom spinterface by spin-resolved IPES (Inverse PhotoEmission Spectroscopy).References:[1] J. Two new photo-switchable terphenylthiazoles molecules are synthesized and self-assembled as monolayers on Au and on ferromagnetic Co electrodes. The electron transport properties probed by conductive atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum reveal a conductance of the light-induced closed (c) form larger than for the open (o) form. We report an unprecedented conductance ratio up to 380 between the closed and open forms on Co for the molecule with the anchoring group (thiol) on the side of the two N atoms of the thiazole unit. This result is rationalized by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations coupled to the Non-Equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism. These calculations show that the high conductance in the closed form is due to a strong electronic coupling between the terphenylthiazole molecules and the Co electrode that manifests by a resonant transmission peak at the Fermi energy of the Co electrode with a large broadening. This behavior is not observed for the same molecules self-assembled on gold electrodes. These high conductance ratios make these Co-based molecular junctions attractive candidates to develop and study switchable molecular spintronic devices., Paper and supporting information

The study presented in this manuscript is part of the field of surface magnetism, which has undergone major developments in recent years thanks to the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). It aims to show that a single molecule, nickelocene [Ni(C5H5)2], can be attached to the tip of a STM to produce a magnetic probe-tip, which, in the context of magnetic imaging, has undeniable advantages compared to conventional tips. Unlike other molecular systems studied with STM, we show that the magnetic properties of nickelocene in the gas phase are preserved in the presence of a metal, even when the molecule is attached to the tip of a STM. We present three remarkable results with this molecular probe-tip: 1) We show that we can control the spin of nickelocene, activating at will a Kondo effect; 2) We monitor the spin states of nickelocene by producing electrically-driven excitations, which we can easily identify through the molecular conductance. These states are sensitive to the magnetic environment surrounding nickelocene; 3) We use these states to probe surface magnetism. We show that by magnetically coupling the molecular probe tip with single atoms, either isolated or in a ferromagnetic surface, we can measure their spin polarization, as well as the nickelocene-atom exchange coupling. By monitoring this coupling it is possible to obtain a magnetic contrast in the STM images with atomic-scale resolution.; L’étude présentée dans ce manuscrit s’inscrit dans le domaine du magnétisme de surface, qui a connu de grands développements ces dernières années grâce au microscope à effet tunnel (STM). Elle a pour but de montrer qu’une molécule simple, le nickelocène [Ni(C5H5)2], peut être attachée au sommet d’une pointe STM afin de produire une pointe-sonde magnétique, qui, dans le cadre de l’imagerie magnétique, présente des avantages indéniables comparés à des pointes conventionnelles. À la différence d’autres systèmes moléculaires étudiés avec le STM, nous montrons que les propriétés magnétiques du nickelocène en phase gazeuse sont préservées en présence d’un métal, même lorsque la molécule est attachée au sommet d’une pointe STM. Nous présentons trois résultats marquants avec cette pointe-sonde moléculaire: 1) Nous montrons que l’on peut contrôler le spin du nickelocène, activant à souhait un effet Kondo ; 2) Nous produisons à l’aide du courant tunnel des excitations entre les états de spin du nickelocène, que nous pouvons aisément identifier au travers de la conductance moléculaire. Ces états sont sensibles à toute perturbation magnétique extérieure au nickelocène; 3) Au travers de ces excitations, nous sondons alors le magnétisme de surface. Nous montrons qu’en couplant magnétiquement la pointe-sonde moléculaire avec des atomes, soit isolés soit dans une surface ferromagnétique, nous pouvons mesurer leur polarisation de spin, ainsi que le couplage d’échange nickelocène-atome. Ce dernier permet d’obtenir un contraste magnétique en imagerie STM à l’échelle atomique.

The stability of magnetic information stored in surface adsorbed single-molecule magnets is of critical interest for applications in nanoscale data storage or quantum computing. The present study combines X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, density functional theory and magnetization dynamics calculations to gain deep insight into the substrate dependent relevant magnetization relaxation mechanisms. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals the opening of a butterfly-shaped magnetic hysteresis of DyPc2 molecules on magnesium oxide and a closed loop on the bare silver substrate, while density functional theory shows that the molecules are only weakly adsorbed in both cases of magnesium oxide and silver. The enhanced magnetic stability of DyPc2 on the oxide film, in conjunction with previous experiments on the TbPc2 analogue, points to a general validity of the magnesium oxide induced stabilization effect. Magnetization dynamics calculations reveal that the enhanced magnetic stability of DyPc2 and TbPc2 on the oxide film is due to the suppression of two-phonon Raman relaxation processes. The results suggest that substrates with low phonon density of states are beneficial for the design of spintronics devices based on single-molecule magnets.

The synthesis and the chemisorption from solution of a terbium bis‐phthalocyaninato complex suitable for the functionalization of lanthanum strontium manganite (LSMO) are reported. Two phosphonate groups are introduced in the double decker structure in order to allow the grafting to the ferromagnetic substrate actively used as injection electrode in organic spin valve devices. The covalent bonding of functionalized terbium bis‐phthalocyaninato system on LSMO surface preserves its molecular properties at the nanoscale. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the integrity of the molecules on the LSMO surface and a small magnetic hysteresis reminiscent of the typical single molecule magnet behavior of this system is detected on surface by X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments. The effect of the hybrid magnetic electrode on spin polarized injection is investigated in vertical organic spin valve devices and compared to the behavior of similar spin valves embedding a single diamagnetic layer of alkyl phosphonate molecules analogously chemisorbed on LSMO. Magnetoresistance experiments have evidenced significant alterations of the magneto‐transport by the terbium bis‐phthalocyaninato complex characterized by two distinct temperature regimes, below and above 50 K, respectively.

International audience; Achieving highly spin-polarized electric currents in atomic-scale junctions is of great importance in the field of nanoelectronics and spintronics. Based on robust symmetry considerations , we propose a mechanism to block completely one of spin conduction channels for a broad class of atomic and molecular junctions bridging two ferromagnetic electrodes. This particular behavior is due to the wave function orthogonality between spin up s-like states in ferromagnetic electrode and available π channels in the junction. As a consequence, the system would ideally yield 100% spin-polarized current, with a junction acting thus as a " half-metallic " conductor. Using ab initio electron transport calculations, we demonstrate this principle on two examples: (i) a short carbon chain and (ii) a π-conjugated molecule (polythiophene) connected either to model semi-infinite Ni wires or to realistic Ni(111) electrodes. It is also predicted that such atomic-scale junctions should lead to very high (ideally, infinite) magneto-resistance ratios since the electric current gets fully blocked if two electrodes have antiparallel magnetic alignment.

This thesis targets the field of molecular spintronics and more particularly the new spin polarization tailoring opportunities, unachievable with inorganic materials, which arise from the ferromagnetic metal/molecule hybridization at the interface.: the new concept of Spinterface.In a first part we investigate Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) based magnetic tunnel nanojunctions. This system appears to be a highly promising candidate to engineer the properties of spintronics devices at the molecular level since SAMs are the equivalent of a molecular LEGO building unit. We present the functionalization of the half-metallic manganite (La,Sr)MnO3 (LSMO) with alkyl phosphonic acids SAMs and the fabrication of LSMO/SAMs/Co magnetic tunnel nanojunctions with an area of few 10 nm2. MR of 30% to 50% is observed in most of the devices, while we report even up to 250% tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) at low temperature. The most striking point is the robustness of the signal with bias voltage with still 20% TMR observed in the volt range. The influence of the molecular chain length is also investigated and represents a first step towards achieving molecular tailoring.In a second part we develop organic spintronics devices relying on high Curie temperature metallic ferromagnetic electrodes and standard organic semiconductor such as Co/Alq3/Co organic spin valves (OSVs). Junctions have a large area (section of 50 or 100 µm) and are fabricated in-situ by shadow mask. Magnetoresistance (MR) effects at room temperature are investigated with -4% MR observed in Co/Alq3/Co OSVs and +8% MR in Co/MgO/Alq3/Co OSVs. The role of the two interfaces on the spin polarization properties of the devices is also investigated. A stronger spin-dependent hybridization is found to occur at the bottom Co/Alq3 interface inverting the spin polarization on the first molecular layer. The observation of spin polarization inversion at room temperature demonstrates that spinterface effects can strive up to room temperature.; Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le domaine de la spintronique moléculaire. Elle s’intéresse plus précisément aux nouvelles opportunités de façonnage de la polarisation de spin qui découlent de l'hybridation métal ferromagnétique/molécule à l'interface : le nouveau concept de « spinterface ».Dans une première partie nous présentons l’étude de nanojonctions tunnel magnétiques à base de monocouches auto-assemblées (SAMs). Ce système est un des plus prometteur dans l’optique de moduler les propriétés des dispositifs de spintronique par ingénierie chimique, tel un LEGO moléculaire. Nous y présentons la fonctionnalisation de la manganite demi-métallique (La,Sr)MnO3 (LSMO) avec des SAMs d’acides alkylphosphoniques et la fabrication de nanojonctions LSMO/SAMs/Co avec une surface de quelque 10 nm2. Une magnétorésistance de 30% à 50% est observée dans la majorité des dispositifs avec une magnétorésistance tunnel (TMR) jusqu'à 250 % à basse température. Un point remarquable est aussi le comportement très robuste du signal avec la tension: environ 20% de TMR est encore observée au-dessus d’une tension de 1 V. L'influence de la longueur de la chaîne moléculaire a été aussi étudiée et représente un premier pas vers la modulation des dispositifs au niveau moléculaire. Dans une deuxième partie nous présentons l’étude des dispositifs organiques à base de métaux ferromagnétiques à haute TC (température de Curie) et semi-conducteurs organiques. Nous avons réalisé des vannes de spin de Co/Alq3/Co avec des sections de 50 ou 100 µm et fabriquées in-situ par « shadow mask ». Des mesures à température ambiante ont permis d’observer -4% de magnétorésistance (MR) dans une vanne de spin Co/Alq3/Co et +8% MR dans une vanne de spin de Co/MgO/Alq3/Co. Le rôle des deux interfaces sur les propriétés de polarisation de spin des dispositifs est aussi étudié et détaillé. Une forte hybridation métal/molécule dépendant du spin à l'interface inferieure de Co/Alq3, présentant un effet de spinterface (inversion de la polarisation en spin), est observée. Ces études montrent que les effets de spinterface, comme l’inversion de la polarisation de spin, peuvent persister dans un dispositif jusqu’à température ambiante.

In this manuscript, we will first present the ultimate molecular building block for spintronic devices, so called single-molecule magnets (Chapter 2). In particular we will focus on a TbPc2 complex and various approaches of probing its magnetization using carbon nanotube detectors and different coupling mechanisms (magnetic flux, electronic and mechanical coupling). With the aim of building a supramolecular torque magnetometer capable of probing the magnetic moment of a molecular magnet, we will describe in Chapter 3 a promising candidate, a carbon nanotube nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS). We will first describe the advantages of carbon based NEMS over classical Si based resonators. Subsequently we will present the state of art of carbon nanotube NEMS and focus in particular on two different nanomechanical motions, a transverse bending mode and a longitudinal stretching mode. In Chapter 4, we present the experimental implementation of a supramolecular torque magnetometer based on carbon nanotube NEMS and single molecule magnets. We first describe the ultraclean bottom-up fabrication process and the extensive characterisation steps of carbon nanotube NEMS at room and cryogenic temperatures. We will finally demonstrate a method of grafting a TbPc2 single molecules magnet on such a carbon nanotube NEMS, that conserves both the magnetic properties of the molecule and the mechanical properties of the resonator. In Chapter 5, we will then perform a systematic study of the transverse bending mode vibration in a carbon nanotube NEMS. We demonstrate for instance, that the dissipation of a carbon nanotube's bending mode vibration to single electron tunneling through the carbon nanotube NEMS-quantum dot critically depends on the dot's electronic environment, i.e. the capacitance, the tunnel coupling to the metal leads, the current and temperature. The findings suggest that one could achieve quality factors of 10^6 or higher by choosing appropriate gate dielectrics and/or by improving the tunnel coupling to the leads, which would notably increase the sensitivity of the carbon nanotube NEMS with respect to a magnetic torque generate by a rotating molecular magnet. In Chapter 6, we demonstrate the presence of a quantized longitudinal stretching mode vibration in a carbon nanotube NEMS functionnalized with TbPc2 single molecule quantum magnets. We will in particular demonstrate that the quantum mechanical nature of both systems, results in a strong coupling between the longitudinal stretching mode and the magnetization of an individual TbPc2 single molecule magnet grafted to the carbon nanotube's sidewall. The strong coupling in fact enables the detection of the nuclear spin states in the TbPc2 molecule. Individual atoms, however, are difficult to arrange in regular patterns. Moreover, their magnetic properties are dominated by interaction with the substrate, which, as in the case of Kondo systems, often leads to a decrease or quench of their local magnetic moment. Here, we show that the supramolecular assembly of Fe and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid molecules on a Cu surface results in ordered arrays of high-spin mononuclear Fe centres on a 1.5nm square grid. Lateral coordination with the molecular ligands yields unsaturated yet stable coordination bonds, which enable chemical modification of the electronic and magnetic properties of the Fe atoms independently from the substrate.
