Abstract

Validation is mandatory to quantify the reliability of satellite biophysical products that are now routinely generated by a range of sensors. This paper presents the VALERI project dedicated to the validation of the products derived from medium resolution satellite sensors (www. avignon.inra.fr/valeri/). It describes the sites used, and the methodology developed to get the high spatial resolution map of the biophysical variables considered, i.e. LAI, fAPAR and fCover that can be estimated from ground level gap fraction measurements. Sites were selected to represent , with the other validation projects, the large variation of biomes and conditions observed over the Earth's surface. Each site is about 3×3 km² in size and should be flat and relatively homogeneous at the medium resolution scale. For each site, the methodology used to generate the high spatial resolution biophysical variable maps is described. It is mainly based on concurent use of local gound measurements and a high spatial resolution satellite image, generally SPOT-HRV. Local ground measurements should be representative of an elementary sampling unit (ESU) that has approximately the same size as a SPOT-HRV pixel. The ground measurements mainly consist of gap fraction measurements achieved with LAI-2000 or hemispherical photographs. The ESUs are selected over the whole 3×3 km² site in order to sample the range of vegetation types observed. A transfer function is subsequently established over the ESUs to relate the ground measurements of the biophysical variables considered to the correspodonding high spatial resolution satellite image data. Finally, co-kriging is applied to generate the high spatial resolution map of the biophysical variables over the 3×3 km² area. The methodology presented in this paper can serve as a basis for validating medium resolution satellite products. These methodological aspects are discussed and conclusions drawn on the limitations and prospects of beforementioned validation activity.

Abstract

Calibration/Validation (C/V) studies using sites in the oceans have a long history and protocols are well established. Over lakes, C/V allows addressing problems such as the performance of the various retracking algorithms and evaluating the accuracy of the geophysical corrections for continental waters. This is achievable when measurements of specific and numerous field campaigns and a ground permanent network of level gauges and weather stations are processed. C/V consists of installation of permanent sites (weather stations, limnigraphs, and GPS reference points) and the organization of regular field campaigns. The lake Issykkul serves as permanent site of C/V, for a multi-mission purpose. The objective of this paper is to calculate the altimeter biases of Jason-3 and Sentinel-3A, both belonging to an operational satellite system which is used for the long-term monitoring of lake level variations. We have also determined the accuracy of the altimeters of these two satellites, through a comparison analysis with in situ data. In 2016 and 2017, three campaigns have been organized over this lake in order to estimate the absolute bias of the nadir altimeter onboard the Jason-3 and Sentinel-3A. The fieldwork consisted of measuring water height using a GPS system, carried on a boat, along the track of the altimeter satellite across the lake. It was performed at the time of the pass of the altimeter. Absolute altimeter biases were calculated by averaging the water height differences along the pass of the satellite (GPS from the boat system versus altimetry). Jason-3 operates in a Low Resolution Mode (LRM), while the Sentinel-3A operates in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mode. In this study we found that the absolute biases measured for Jason-3 were −28 ± 40 mm with the Ocean retracker and 206 ± 30 mm with the Ice-1 retracker. The biases for Sentinel-3A were −14 ± 20 mm with the Samosa (Ocean like) retracker and 285 ± 20 mm with the OCOG (Ice-1-like) retracker. We have also evaluated the accuracy of these two altimeters over Lake Issykkul which reached to 3 cm, for both the instruments, using the Ocean retracker.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we applied the integration methodology developed in the companion paper (Aires, 2014) by using real satellite observations over the Mississippi basin. The methodology provides basin scale estimates of the four water budget components (precipitation P , evapotranspiration E, water storage change ∆S and runoff R) in a two-step process: the Simple Weighting (SW) integration and a Post-processing Filtering (PF) that imposes the water budget closure. A comparison with in situ observations of P and E demonstrated that PF improved the estimation of both components. A Closure Correction Model (CCM) has been derived from the integrated product (SW+PF), that allows to correct each observation dataset independently, unlike the SW+PF method which requires simultaneous estimates of the four components. The CCM allows to standardize the various datasets for each component and highly decrease the budget residual (P −E−∆S− R). As a direct application, the CCM was combined with the water budget equation to reconstruct missing values in any component. Results of a Monte Carlo experiment with synthetic gaps demonstrated the good performances of the method, except for the runoff data that has a variability of the same order of magnitude as the budget residual. Similarly , we proposed a reconstruction of ∆S between 1990 and 2002 where no GRACE-data is available. Unlike most of the studies dealing with the water budget closure at the basin scale, only satellite observations and in situ runoff measurements are used. Consequently the integrated datasets are model-independent and can be used for model calibration or validation.

International audience; In many regions of the world where strong water depletion occurs, surface water stocks are often insufficient to satisfy the population domestic needs and irrigation requirements. When large aquifers are present, groundwater pumping may be used to fulfill these needs. Yet, flows in aquifer systems are largely slower than in the surface layers, and high abstraction combined with low natural recharge may lead to groundwater depletion (decreasing trend of water table level). Despite the importance of integrating water stored in the aquifers into water management, groundwater monitoring suffers from scarce direct measurements. Hydrology models may provide an alternative way to estimate groundwater variations but they need data to be calibrated. In that sense, even if they are generally quite relevant to represent surface and near surface storage (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, soil moisture and evapotranspiration), they also suffer from the lack of groundwater measurements. Since 2002, the GRACE mission has provided, all over the world, monthly estimates of the vertically integrated water storage, also named Total Water Storage (TWS). In this study, we first compare the GRACE inferred TWS to the climate forcing (precipitation) in some of the greatest aquifers of the world (among others, the Guarani, California and Canning aquifers). This comparison shows quite limited correlations in space and time variability, which seems to indicate the presence of a non-negligible anthropogenic component. Groundwater storage variations are then calculated by subtracting modeled land surface storage to the GRACE-derived TWS. Different models (GLDAS, WGHM, ISBA and LaD) are used in order to estimate their uncertainties, for example on the "surface to ground" vertical water distribution. In some cases, in situ water table variations are available and then used to validate the method. Other ancillary data, such as volume of groundwater pumping, are also used as validation materials. Results show a quite good agreement between direct measurements and GRACE-derived groundwater storage variations, which confirms the potential of satellite Gravimetry for the monitoring and possibly the management of groundwater in large aquifers.

978-3-642-12795-3; Accurate and continuous monitoring of lakes and inland seas has been possible since 1993 thanks to the success of satellite altimetry missions: TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P), GFO, JASON-1, and ENVISAT. Global processing of the data of these satellites can provide time series of lake surface heights over the entire Earth at different temporal and spatial scales with a subdecimeter precision. Large lakes affect climate on a regional scale through albedo and evaporation. In some regions, highly ephemeral lakes provide information on extreme events such as severe droughts or floods. On the other hand, endorheic basin lakes are sensitive to changes in regional water balance. In a given region covered by a group of lakes, if the records of their level variations are long enough, they could reveal the recurrence of trends in a very reliable and accurate manner. Lakes are thought to have enough inertia to be considered as an excellent proxy for climate change. Moreover, during the last century, thousands of dams have been constructed along the big rivers worldwide, leading to the appearance of large reservoirs. This has several impacts on the basins affected by those constructions, as well as effects on global sea level rise. The response of water levels to regional hydrology is particularly marked for lakes and inland seas of semiarid regions. Altimetry data can provide a valuable source of information in hydrology sciences, but in-situ data (river runoff, water level, temperature, or precipitation) are still strongly needed to study the evolution of the water mass balance of each lake.

International audience; Freshwater discharge is a key component of the global water cycle. During the last few decades, remotely sensed hydro-climatic data has given the opportunity to overcome the numerous technical, political and economical challenges raised by ground-based observation networks. In the present study, we used satellite observations combined with atmospheric reanalysis in a coupled ocean-land-atmosphere water mass balance to estimate freshwater discharge over the last few years at basin, continental and global scales. Variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) are provided by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, whereas precipitation minus evapotranspiration (P-E) is computed from atmospheric reanalyses (NCEP-NCAR and ECMWF datasets). In order to assess the accuracy of freshwater discharge estimates, uncertainties in each terms of the water balance are explored. GRACE-derived TWS is compared to outputs of Land Surface Models (GLDAS, WGHM and ISBA), keeping in mind that LSMs generally do not account for human-induced effects on the hydrological cycle. Independently, reanalysis-based P-E is compared to remotely sensed and/or in situ observations of precipitation (GPCC, GPCP, CMAP), evaporation over oceans (OAFlux, HOAPS) and modeled evapotranspiration over land (Penman-Monteith and Priestley-Taylor). Finally, freshwater discharge estimates are compared to in situ discharge observations from GRDC and to estimates from previous global studies. Discrepancies between the different datasets, in terms of annual mean as well as seasonal and inter-annual variability, allowed us to draw uncertainty maps, then highlighting regions where freshwater discharge estimates are the most uncertain. Such results may help to focus future developments on hydrological modeling for further improvement in freshwater discharge estimates.

Abstract

International audience; The ESA CoSMOS study aims at performing the first validation of the SMOS Soil Moisture Level 2algorithm using real data. The validation relies on data acquired during the CoSMOS/NAFE campaign in the Goulburn River Catchment (Southeast Australia) in 2005. The CoSMOS/ NAFE airborne campaign involved two L-band radiometers, EMIRAD (full- pol, bi-angular) and PLMR (dual-pol, multi-angular), and provided L- band data at different resolutions for six weeks.Intensive ground sampling was carried out too to provide measurements of all the surface parameters required by the soil moisture retrieval algorithm. This communication presents the main outcomes of the study. The focus is threefold:i) how do simulations of the surface brightness temperature and soil moisture retrievals perform using the ^Ñdefault^Ò L2 algorithm over homogenous an heterogeneous surfaces? Ii) what recommendations can be made in terms of fine-tuning of the microwave model used by the SMOSretrieval algorithm (soil model, vegetation model, litter model), and iii) how does the retrieved soil moisture at the scale of a SMOS pixel compare to ground measurements of soil moisture across the catchment? These questions are addressed in the ESA CoSMOS study, which makes a comprehensive data set available for validation of the SMOS Level 2 algorithm, and is currently at the phase of performing the forward model simulations and soil moisture retrievals.

Abstract

Remote sensing is an helpful tool for crop monitoring or vegetation growth estimation at a country or regional scale. However, satellite images generally have to cope with a compromise between the time frequency of observations and their resolution (i.e. pixel size). When concerned with high temporal resolution, we have to work with information on the basis of kilometric pixels that represent aggregated responses of multiple land cover inside each low resolution pixel. Disaggreggation is then necessary to downscale from the square kilometer to the local dynamic of each parcel (crop, wood, meadows,...). We propose to address this question through the generalisation of varying-time regression models for longitudinal data and/or functional data by introducing local mixed effects. The estimators are built by expanding the mixed pixels trajectories with B-splines functions and maximizing the log-likelihood with a Backfitting-ECME algorithm. A BLUP formula allows then to get the "best possible" estimations of the local temporal responses of each crop when observing mixed pixels trajectories. We show that this model has many potential applications in remote sensing and an interesting one consists in coupling high and low spatial resolution images in order to perform temporal interpolation of high spatial resolution images (20m), increasing the knowledge on particular crops in very precise locations. The disaggregation, or downscaling, and interpolation approaches are illustrated on remote sensing data obtained on the South-Western of France during the year 2002.
