Abstract: We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. Abstract: International audience; Context. The study of large and representative samples of low-metallicity star-forming galaxies at different cosmic epochs is of great interest to the detailed understanding of the assembly history and evolution of low-mass galaxies. Aims. We present a thorough characterization of a large sample of 183 extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) at redshift 0.11 \textless= z \textless= 0.93 selected from the 20k zCOSMOS bright survey because of their unusually large emission line equivalent widths. Methods. We use multiwavelength COSMOS photometry, HST-ACS I-band imaging, and optical zCOSMOS spectroscopy to derive the main global properties of star-forming EELGs, such as sizes, stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR), and reliable oxygen abundances using both “direct” and “strong-line” methods. Results. The EELGs are extremely compact (r(50) similar to 1.3 kpc), low-mass (M-* similar to 10(7)-10(10) M-circle dot) galaxies forming stars at unusually high specific star formation rates (sSFR equivalent to SFR/M-star up to 10(-7) yr(-1)) compared to main sequence star-forming galaxies of the same stellar mass and redshift. At rest-frame UV wavelengths, the EELGs are luminous and show high surface brightness and include strong Ly alpha emitters, as revealed by GALEX spectroscopy. We show that zCOSMOS EELGs are high-ionization, low-metallicity systems, with median 12+log(O/H) = 8.16 +/- 0.21 (0.2 Z(circle dot)) including a handful of extremely metal-deficient (\textless0.1 Z(circle dot)) EELGs. While similar to 80% of the EELGs show non-axisymmetric morphologies, including clumpy and cometary or tadpole galaxies, we find that similar to 29% of them show additional low-surface-brightness features, which strongly suggests recent or ongoing interactions. As star-forming dwarfs in the local Universe, EELGs are most often found in relative isolation. While only very few EELGs belong to compact groups, almost one third of them are found in spectroscopically confirmed loose pairs or triplets. Conclusions. The zCOSMOS EELGs are galaxies caught in a transient and probably early period of their evolution, where they are efficiently building up a significant fraction of their present-day stellar mass in an ongoing, galaxy-wide starburst. Therefore, the EELGs constitute an ideal benchmark for comparison studies between low- and high-redshift low-mass star-forming galaxies.

Abstract: Bolometric luminosities and Eddington ratios of both X-ray selected broad-line (Type-1) and narrow-line (Type-2) AGN from the XMM-Newton survey in the COSMOS field are presented. The sample is composed by 929 AGN (382 Type-1 AGN and 547 Type-2 AGN) and it covers a wide range of redshifts, X-ray luminosities and absorbing column densities. About 65% of the sources are spectroscopically identified as either Type-1 or Type-2 AGN (83% and 52% respectively), while accurate photometric redshifts are available for the rest of the sample. The study of such a large sample of X-ray selected AGN with a high quality multi-wavelength coverage from the far-infrared (now with the inclusion of Herschel data at 100 micron and 160 micron) to the optical-UV allows us to obtain accurate estimates of bolometric luminosities, bolometric corrections and Eddington ratios. The kbol-Lbol relations derived in the present work are calibrated for the first time against a sizable AGN sample, and rely on observed redshifts, X-ray luminosities and column density distributions. We find that kbol is significantly lower at high Lbol with respect to previous estimates by Marconi et al. (2004) and Hopkins et al. (2007). Black hole masses and Eddington ratios are available for 170 Type-1 AGN, while black hole masses for Type-2 AGN are computed for 481 objects using the black hole mass-stellar mass relation and the morphological information. We confirm a trend between kbol and lambda_Edd, with lower hard X-ray bolometric corrections at lower Eddington ratios for both Type-1 and Type-2 AGN. Abstract: International audience; We studied the chronology of galactic bulge and disc formation by analysing the relative contributions of these components to the B-band rest-frame luminosity density at different epochs. We present the first estimate of the evolution of the fraction of rest-frame B-band light in galactic bulges and discs since redshift z similar to 0.8. We performed a bulge-to-disc decomposition of HST/ACS images of 3266 galaxies in the zCOSMOS-bright survey with spectroscopic redshifts in the range 0.7 \textless= z \textless= 0.9. We find that the fraction of B-band light in bulges and discs is (26 4)% and (74 4)%, respectively. When compared with rest-frame B-band measurements of galaxies in the local Universe in the same mass range (10(9)M circle dot M10(11.5).M circle dot),we find that the B-band light in discs decreases by -30% from z similar to 0.7-0.9 to z 0, while the light from the bulge increases by -30% over the same period of time. We interpret this evolution as the consequence of star formation and mass assembly processes, as well as morphological transformation, which gradually shift stars formed at half the age of the Universe from star-forming late-type/irregular galaxies to earlier types and ultimately into spheroids.

Abstract: International audience; We study a sample of Herschel selected galaxies within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South and the Cosmic Evolution Survey fields in the framework of the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) Evolutionary Probe project. Starting from the rich multiwavelength photometric data sets available in both fields, we perform a broad-band spectral energy distribution decomposition to disentangle the possible active galactic nucleus (AGN) contribution from that related to the host galaxy. We find that 37 per cent of the Herschel-selected sample shows signatures of nuclear activity at the 99 per cent confidence level. The probability of revealing AGN activity increases for bright (L1-1000 \textgreater 10(11) L-circle dot) star-forming galaxies at z \textgreater 0.3, becoming about 80 per cent for the brightest (L1-1000 \textgreater 10(12) L-circle dot) infrared (IR) galaxies at z \textgreater= 1. Finally, we reconstruct the AGN bolometric luminosity function and the supermassive black hole growth rate across cosmic time up to z similar to 3 from a far-IR perspective. This work shows general agreement with most of the panchromatic estimates from the literature, with the global black hole growth peaking at z ~ 2 and reproducing the observed local black hole mass density with consistent values of the radiative efficiency epsilon(rad) (~ 0.07).

Abstract: International audience; We exploit the deep and extended far-IR data sets (at 70, 100 and 160 mu m) of the Herschel Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) Survey, in combination with the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey data at 250, 350 and 500 mu m, to derive the evolution of the rest-frame 35-, 60-, 90-and total infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) up to z similar to 4. We detect very strong luminosity evolution for the total IR LF (L-IR alpha (1 + z)(3.55 +/- 0.10) up to z similar to 2, and. (1 + z) 1.62 similar to 0.51 at 2 \textless z less than or similar to 4) combined with a density evolution ( (1 + z)-0.57 +/- 0.22 up to z similar to 1 and. (1 + z)-3.92 +/- 0.34 at 1 \textless z less than or similar to 4). In agreement with previous findings, the IR luminosity density (.IR) increases steeply to z similar to 1, then flattens between z similar to 1 and z similar to 3 to decrease at z similar to 3. Galaxies with different spectral energy distributions, masses and specific star formation rates (SFRs) evolve in very different ways and this large and deep statistical sample is the first one allowing us to separately study the different evolutionary behaviours of the individual IR populations contributing to.IR. Galaxies occupying the well-established SFR-stellar mass main sequence (MS) are found to dominate both the total IR LF and.IR at all redshifts, with the contribution from off-MS sources (= 0.6 dex above MS) being nearly constant (similar to 20 per cent of the total IR) and showing no significant signs of increase with increasing z over the whole 0.8 \textless z \textless 2.2 range. Sources with mass in the range 10 = log(M/M-circle dot) = 11 are found to dominate the total IR LF, with more massive galaxies prevailing at the bright end of the high-z (greater than or similar to 2) LF. A two-fold evolutionary scheme for IR galaxies is envisaged: on the one hand, a starburst-dominated phase in which the Super Massive Black Holes (SMBH) grows and is obscured by dust (possibly triggered by a major merging event), is followed by an AGN-dominated phase, then evolving towards a local elliptical. On the other hand, moderately star-forming galaxies containing a low-luminosity AGN have various properties suggesting they are good candidates for systems in a transition phase preceding the formation of steady spiral galaxies.

Abstract: International audience; We examine the red fraction of central and satellite galaxies in the large zCOSMOS group catalog out to z similar or equal to 0.8, correcting for both the incompleteness in stellar mass and for the less than perfect purities of the central and satellite samples. We show that at all masses and at all redshifts, the fraction of satellite galaxies that have been quenched, i.e., that are red, is systematically higher than that of centrals, as seen locally in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The satellite quenching efficiency, which is the probability that a satellite is quenched because it is a satellite rather than a central, is, as locally, independent of stellar mass. Furthermore, the average value is about 0.5, which is also very similar to that seen in the SDSS. We also construct the mass functions of blue and red centrals and satellites and show that these broadly follow the predictions of the Peng et al. analysis of the SDSS groups. Together, these results indicate that the effect of the group environment in quenching satellite galaxies was very similar to what it is today when the universe was about half its present age.

Abstract: International audience; We identify 42 “candidate groups” lying between 1.8\textlessz\textless3.0 from a sample of 3502 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the zCOSMOS-deep redshift survey within this same redshift interval. These systems contain three to five spectroscopic galaxies that lie within 500 kpc in projected distance (in physical space) and within 700 km s(-1) in velocity. Based on extensive analysis of mock catalogs that have been generated from the Millennium simulation, we examine the likely nature of these systems at the time of observation, and what they will evolve into down to the present epoch. Although few of the “member” galaxies are likely to reside in the same halo at the epoch we observe them, 50% of the systems will have, by the present epoch, all of the member galaxies in the same halo, and almost all (93%) will have at least some of the potential members in the same halo. Most of the candidate groups can therefore be described as “proto-groups.” A crude estimate of the overdensities of these structures is also consistent with the idea that these systems are being seen as they assemble. We also examine present-day halos and ask whether their progenitors would have been seen among our candidate groups. For present-day halos between 10(14) and 10(15) M(circle dot)h(-1), 35% should have appeared among our candidate groups, and this would have risen to 70% if our survey had been fully sampled, so we can conclude that our sample can be taken as representative of a large fraction of such systems. There is a clear excess of massive galaxies above 10(10)M(circle dot) around the locations of the candidate groups in a large independent COSMOS photo-z sample, but we see no evidence in this latter data for any color differentiation with respect to the field. This is, however, consistent with the idea that such differentiation arises in satellite galaxies, as indicated at z \textless1, if the candidate groups are indeed only starting to be assembled.

Abstract: International audience; We empirically MD test the relation between the SFR(LIR) derived from the infrared luminosity, LIR, and the SFR(Ha) derived from the Ha emission line luminosity using simple conversion relations. We use a sample of 474 galaxies at z = 0.060.46 with both Ha detection [from 20k redshift Cosmological Evolution (zCOSMOS) survey] and new far-IR Herschel data (100 and 160 mu m). We derive SFR(Ha) from the Ha extinction corrected emission line luminosity. We find a very clear trend between E(B - V) and LIR that allows us to estimate extinction values for each galaxy even if the H beta emission line measurement is not reliable. We calculate the LIR by integrating from 8 up to 1000 mu m the spectral energy distribution (SED) that is best fitting our data. We compare the SFR(Ha) with the SFR(LIR). We find a very good agreement between the two star formation rate (SFR) estimates, with a slope of m = 1.01 +/- 0.03 in the log SFR(LIR) versus log SFR(Ha) diagram, a normalization constant of a = -0.08 +/- 0.03 and a dispersion of s = 0.28 dex. We study the effect of some intrinsic properties of the galaxies in the SFR(LIR)SFR(Ha) relation, such as the redshift, the mass, the specific star formation rate (SSFR) or the metallicity. The metallicity is the parameter that affects most the SFR comparison. The mean ratio of the two SFR estimators log[SFR(LIR)/SFR(Ha)] varies by similar to 0.6 dex from metal-poor to metal-rich galaxies [8.1 \textless log?(O/H) + 12 \textless 9.2]. This effect is consistent with the prediction of a theoretical model for the dust evolution in spiral galaxies. Considering different morphological types, we find a very good agreement between the two SFR indicators for the Sa, Sb and Sc morphologically classified galaxies, both in slope and in normalization. For the Sd, irregular sample (Sd/Irr), the formal best-fitting slope becomes much steeper (m = 1.62 +/- 0.43), but it is still consistent with 1 at the 1.5s level, because of the reduced statistics of this sub-sample.

Abstract: We use the overdensity field reconstructed in the volume of the COSMOS area to study the nonlinear biasing of the zCOSMOS galaxies. The galaxy overdensity field is reconstructed using the current sample of ~8500 accurate zCOSMOS redshifts at I(AB) = b(delta,z,R) delta is of the following characteristic shape. The function vanishes in the most underdense regions and then sharply rises in a nonlinear way towards the mean densities. is almost a linear tracer of the matter in the overdense regions, up to the most overdense regions in which it is nonlinear again and the local effective slope of vs. delta is smaller than unity. Abstract: We measure the spatial clustering of galaxies as a function of their morphological type at z~0.8, for the first time in a deep redshift survey with full morphological information. This is obtained by combining high-resolution HST imaging and VLT spectroscopy for about 8,500 galaxies to I_AB=22.5 with accurate spectroscopic redshifts from the zCOSMOS-Bright redshift survey. At this epoch, early-type galaxies already show a significantly stronger clustering than late-type galaxies on all probed scales. A comparison to the SDSS at z~0.1, shows that the relative clustering strength between early and late morphological classes tends to increase with cosmic time at small separations, while on large scales it shows no significant evolution since z~0.8. This suggests that most early-type galaxies had already formed in intermediate and dense environments at this epoch. Our results are consistent with a picture in which the relative clustering of different morphological types between z~1 and z~0, reflects the evolving role of environment in the morphological transformation of galaxies, on top of the global mass-driven evolution., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: One of the key unanswered questions in the study of galaxy evolution is what physical processes inside galaxies drive the changes in the SFRs in individual galaxies that, taken together, produce the large decline in the global star-formation rate density (SFRD) to redshifts since z~2. Many studies of the SFR at intermediate redshifts have been made as a function of the integrated stellar mass of galaxies but these did not use information on the internal structural properties of the galaxies. In this paper we present a comparative study of the dependence of SFRs on the average surface mass densities (SigmaM) of galaxies of different morphological types up to z~1 using the zCOSMOS and SDSS surveys. The main findings about the evolution of these relatively massive galaxies are: 1) There is evidence that, for both SDSS ans zCOSMOS galaxies, the mean specific SFR within a given population (either disk-dominated or bulge-dominated) is independent of SigmaM; 2) The observed SSFR - SigmaM step-function relation is due, at all investigated redshifts, to the changing mix of disk-dominated and bulge-dominated galaxies as surface density increases and the strong difference in the average SSFR between disks and bulges. We also find a modest differential evolution in the size-mass relations of disk and spheroid galaxies; 3) The shape of the median SSFR - SigmaM relation is similar, but with median SSFR values that are about 5-6 times higher in zCOSMOS galaxies than for SDSS, across the whole range of SigmaM, and in both spheroid and disk galaxies. Abstract: Gas outflows are believed to play a pivotal role in shaping galaxies, as they regulate both star formation and black hole growth. Despite their ubiquitous presence, the origin and the acceleration mechanism of such powerful and extended winds is not yet understood. Direct observations of the cold gas component in objects with detected outflows at other wavelengths are needed to assess the impact of the outflow on the host galaxy interstellar medium (ISM). We observed with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer an obscured quasar at z~1.5, XID2028, for which the presence of an ionised outflow has been unambiguously signalled by NIR spectroscopy. The detection of CO(3-2) emission in this source allows us to infer the molecular gas content and compare it to the ISM mass derived from the dust emission. We then analyze the results in the context of recent insights on scaling relations, which describe the gas content of the overall population of star-forming galaxies at a similar redshifts. The Star formation efficiency (~100) and gas mass (M_gas=2.1-9.5x10^{10} M_sun) inferred from the CO(3-2) line depend on the underlying assumptions on the excitation of the transition and the CO-to-H2 conversion factor. However, the combination of this information and the ISM mass estimated from the dust mass suggests that the ISM/gas content of XID2028 is significantly lower than expected for its observed M$_\star$, sSFR and redshift, based on the most up-to-date calibrations (with gas fraction, 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: We present the analysis of photometric, spectroscopic, and morphological properties for differently selected samples of passive galaxies up to z=1 extracted from the zCOSMOS-20k spectroscopic survey. This analysis intends to explore the dependence of galaxy properties on the selection criterion adopted, study the degree of contamination due to star-forming outliers, and provide a comparison between different commonly used selection criteria. We extracted from the zCOSMOS-20k catalog six different samples of passive galaxies, based on morphology, optical colors, specific star-formation rate, a best fit to the observed spectral energy distribution, and a criterion that combines morphological, spectroscopic, and photometric information. The morphological sample has the higher percentage of contamination in colors, specific star formation rate and presence of emission lines, while the red & passive ETGs sample is the purest, with properties mostly compatible with no star formation activity; however, it is also the less economic criterion in terms of information used. The best performing among the other criteria are the red SED and the quiescent ones, providing a percentage of contamination only slightly higher than the red & passive ETGs criterion (on average of a factor of ~2) but with absolute values of the properties of contaminants still compatible with a red, passively evolving population. We also provided two revised definitions of early type galaxies based on restframe color-color and color-mass criteria, that better reproduce the observed bimodalities. Abstract: (Abridged) We analyze the environments and galactic properties (morphologies and star-formation histories) of a sample of 153 close kinematic pairs in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1 identified in the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample of galaxies. Correcting for projection effects, the fraction of close kinematic pairs is three times higher in the top density quartile than in the lowest one. This translates to a three times higher merger rate because the merger timescales are shown, from mock catalogues based on the Millennium simulation, to be largely independent of environment once the same corrections for projection is applied. We then examine the morphologies and stellar populations of galaxies in the pairs, comparing them to control samples that are carefully matched in environment so as to remove as much as possible the well-known effects of environment on the properties of the parent population of galaxies. Once the environment is properly taken into account in this way, we find that the early-late morphology mix is the same as for the parent population, but that the fraction of irregular galaxies is boosted by 50-75%, with a disproportionate increase in the number of irregular-irregular pairs (factor of 4-8 times), due to the disturbance of disk galaxies. Future dry-mergers, involving elliptical galaxies comprise less than 5% of all close kinematic pairs. In the closest pairs, there is a boost in the specific star-formation rates of star-forming galaxies of a factor of 2-4, and there is also evidence for an increased incidence of post star-burst galaxies. Abstract: We map the radial and azimuthal distribution of Mg II gas within 200 kpc (physical) of 4000 galaxies at redshifts 0.5 < z < 0.9 using co-added spectra of more than 5000 background galaxies at z > 1. We investigate the variation of Mg II rest frame equivalent width as a function of the radial impact parameter for different subsets of foreground galaxies selected in terms of their rest-frame colors and masses. Blue galaxies have a significantly higher average Mg II equivalent width at close galactocentric radii as compared to the red galaxies. Amongst the blue galaxies, there is a correlation between Mg II equivalent width and galactic stellar mass of the host galaxy. We also find that the distribution of Mg II absorption around group galaxies is more extended than that for non-group galaxies, and that groups as a whole have more extended radial profiles than individual galaxies. Interestingly, these effects can be satisfactorily modeled by a simple superposition of the absorption profiles of individual member galaxies, assuming that these are the same as those of non-group galaxies, suggesting that the group environment may not significantly enhance or diminish the Mg II absorption of individual galaxies. We show that there is a strong azimuthal dependence of the Mg II absorption within 50 kpc of inclined disk-dominated galaxies, indicating the presence of a strongly bipolar outflow aligned along the disk rotation axis. Abstract: Using Chandra observations we have identified a sample of seven off-nuclear X-ray sources, in the redshift range z=0.072-0.283, located within optically bright galaxies in the COSMOS Survey. Using the multi-wavelength coverage available in the COSMOS field, we study the properties of the host galaxies of these ULXs. In detail, we derived their star formation rate from H_alpha measurements and their stellar masses using SED fitting techniques with the aim to compute the probability to have an off-nuclear source based on the host galaxy properties. We divide the host galaxies in different morphological classes using the available ACS/HST imaging. We find that our ULXs candidates are located in regions of the SFR versus M$_star$ plane where one or more off-nuclear detectable sources are expected. From a morphological analysis of the ACS imaging and the use of rest-frame colours, we find that our ULXs are hosted both in late and early type galaxies. Finally, we find that the fraction of galaxies hosting a ULX ranges from ~0.5% to ~0.2% going from L[0.5-2 keV]=3 x 10^39 erg s^-1 to L[0.5-2 keV]= 2 x 10^40 erg s^-1., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: The identities of the main processes triggering and quenching star-formation in galaxies remain unclear. A key stage in evolution, however, appears to be represented by post-starburst galaxies. To investigate their impact on galaxy evolution, we initiated a multiwavelength study of galaxies with k+a spectral features in the COSMOS field. We examine a mass-selected sample of k+a galaxies at z=0.48-1.2 using the spectroscopic zCOSMOS sample. K+a galaxies occupy the brightest tail of the luminosity distribution. They are as massive as quiescent galaxies and populate the green valley in the colour versus luminosity (or stellar mass) distribution. A small percentage (, 17 pages, 9 figures. Abstract: The impact of environment on AGN activity up to z~1 is assessed by utilizing a mass-selected sample of galaxies from the 10k catalog of the zCOSMOS spectroscopic redshift survey. We identify 147 AGN by their X-ray emission as detected by XMM-Newton from a parent sample of 7234 galaxies. We measure the fraction of galaxies with stellar mass M_*>2.5x10^10 Msun that host an AGN as a function of local overdensity using the 5th, 10th and 20th nearest neighbors that cover a range of physical scales (~1-4 Mpc). Overall, we find that AGNs prefer to reside in environments equivalent to massive galaxies with substantial levels of star formation. Specifically, AGNs with host masses between 0.25-1x10^11 Msun span the full range of environments (i.e., field-to-group) exhibited by galaxies of the same mass and rest-frame color or specific star formation rate. Host galaxies having M_*>10^11 Msun clearly illustrate the association with star formation since they are predominantly bluer than the underlying galaxy population and exhibit a preference for lower density regions analogous to SDSS studies of narrow-line AGN. To probe the environment on smaller physical scales, we determine the fraction of galaxies (M_*>2.5x10^10 Msun) hosting AGNs inside optically-selected groups, and find no significant difference with field galaxies. We interpret our results as evidence that AGN activity requires a sufficient fuel supply; the probability of a massive galaxy to have retained some sufficient amount of gas, as evidence by its ongoing star formation, is higher in underdense regions where disruptive processes (i.e., galaxy harrassment, tidal stripping) are lessened., 13 pages; 11 figures; To appear in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: We study the dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity and stellar mass at redshifts z ~ [0.2-1] using the first zCOSMOS 10K sample. We measure the redshift-space correlation functions xi(rp,pi) and its projection wp(rp) for sub-samples covering different luminosity, mass and redshift ranges. We quantify in detail the observational selection biases and we check our covariance and error estimate techniques using ensembles of semi-analytic mock catalogues. We finally compare our measurements to the cosmological model predictions from the mock surveys. At odds with other measurements, we find a weak dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity in all redshift bins explored. A mild dependence on stellar mass is instead observed. At z~0.7, wp(rp) shows strong excess power on large scales. We interpret this as produced by large-scale structure dominating the survey volume and extending preferentially in direction perpendicular to the line-of-sight. We do not see any significant evolution with redshift of the amplitude of clustering for bright and/or massive galaxies. The clustering measured in the zCOSMOS data at 0.5=10 is only marginally consistent with predictions from the mock surveys. On scales larger than ~2 h^-1 Mpc, the observed clustering amplitude is compatible only with ~1% of the mocks. Thus, if the power spectrum of matter is LCDM with standard normalization and the bias has no unnatural scale-dependence, this result indicates that COSMOS has picked up a particularly rare, ~2-3 sigma positive fluctuation in a volume of ~10^6 h^-1 Mpc^3. Abstract: zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey that is being undertaken in the COSMOS field using 600 hours of observation with the VIMOS spectrograph on the 8-m VLT. The survey is designed to characterise the environments of COSMOS galaxies from the 100 kpc scales of galaxy groups up to the 100 Mpc scale of the cosmic web and to produce diagnostic information on galaxies and active galactic nuclei. The zCOSMOS survey consists of two parts: (a) zCOSMOS-bright, a magnitude-limited I-band IAB < 22.5 sample of about 20,000 galaxies with 0.1 < z < 1.2 covering the whole 1.7 deg2 COSMOS ACS field and designed to mimic the parameters of the 2dfGRS; and (b) zCOSMOS-deep, a survey of approximately 10,000 galaxies selected through colour-selection criteria to have 1.4 < z < 3.0, within the central 1 deg2. This paper describes the survey design and the construction of the target catalogues, and briefly outlines the observational program and the data pipeline. In the first observing season, spectra of 1303 zCOSMOS-bright targets and of 977 zCOSMOS-deep targets have been obtained. These are briefly analysed to demonstrate the characteristics that may be expected from zCOSMOS, and particularly zCOSMOS-bright, when it is finally completed between 2008-2009. The power of combining spectroscopic and photometric redshifts is demonstrated, especially in correctly identifying the emission line in single-line spectra and in determining which of the less reliable spectroscopic redshifts are correct and which are incorrect. Our zCOSMOS-deep spectra demonstrate the effectiveness of our selection techniques to isolate high redshift galaxies at 1.4 < z < 3.0 and of VIMOS to measure their redshifts using ultraviolet absorption lines., Comment: 24 pages plus 16 figures.
