International audience; Hard and strong transparent glass-ceramics (TGCs) can be used as cooktop plates, telescope mirrors, armor materials, and screens for smartphones and tablets. In this work, transparent glass-ceramics from the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MAS) system were obtained after a refined heat-treatment protocol. The evolution in fracture toughness, KIC (Single Edge Precracked Beam), and Vickers hardness (H-V) were characterized as a function of the crystallization progress. The K-IC of the parent glass was 0.6 MPa m(1/2), whereas the TGC samples present values around 1.1 MPa m(1/2). The average glass hardness was 8.5 and PLUSMN; 0.8 GPa for loads of 0.6-5 N, whereas the H-V of the TGC samples varied from 9 to 10 GPa, for indentation loads ranging from 4.9 to 9.8 N. These results are discussed in light of our previous findings on the evolution of elastic modulus in the same glass-ceramics.

International audience; Glass-ceramics (GC) generally possess enhanced mechanical properties compared to their parent glasses. The knowledge of how crystallization evolves and affects the mechanical properties with increasing temperature is essential to optimize the design of the crystallization cycle. In this study, we crystallized a glass of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system with nucleating agents TiO2 and ZrO2. The crystallization cycle comprised a 48 hour nucleation treatment at the glass-transition temperature followed by a 10 hour growth step at a higher temperature. During this cycle, the evolution of crystalline phases was followed by high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD), which revealed the presence of karooite (MgO2TiO(2)), spinel (MgOAl2O3), rutile (TiO2), sillimanite (Al2O3SiO2), and sapphirine (4MgO5Al(2)O(3)2SiO(2)). The same heat treatment was applied for in situ measurement of elastic properties: elastic modulus, E, shear modulus, G, and Poisson's ratio, . The evolution of these parameters during the heating path from room temperature to the final crystallization temperature and during the nucleation and the crystallization plateaus is discussed. E and G evolve significantly in the first two hours of the growth step. At the end of the crystallization process, the elastic and shear moduli of the GC were approximately 20% larger than those of the parent glass.

There is evidence that Nothofagus nervosa (= N. alpina) is suitable for timber production in temperate regions due to its wood quality and fast growth. However, high intra-specific variability in the architectural traits of this species limits its usefulness. & Aims This study was aimed at evaluating intra-specific variability in the architecture of N. nervosa trees at the population level, with emphasis on traits related to the suitability of trees for timber production. & Methods The size of 13-year-old trees installed in an experimental field population and the extent of differentiation between trunk and branches were compared among families (trees derived from different mother trees). & Results The large majority of trees exhibited architectural features indicative of high suitability for timber production: clear differentiation between trunk and main branches and few occurrences of permanent trunk forks, apex deaths, and sylleptic branching. Trees belonging to different families differed in height and trunk diameter. Micro-environmental conditions had a very significant effect on most architectural traits, including the trunk differentiation. & Conclusions N. nervosa emerges as a suitable option for timber production in temperate regions. 5 pages; International audience; This article documents the addition of 411 microsatellite marker loci and 15 pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Anopheles lesteri, Aspergillus clavatus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus terreus, Branchiostoma japonicum, Branchiostoma belcheri, Colias behrii, Coryphopterus personatus, Cynogolssus semilaevis, Cynoglossus semilaevis, Dendrobium officinale, Dendrobium officinale, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Metrioptera roeselii, Myrmeciza exsul, Ochotona thibetana, Neosartorya fischeri, Nothofagus pumilio, Onychodactylus fischeri, Phoenicopterus roseus, Salvia officinalis L., Scylla paramamosain, Silene latifo, Sula sula, and Vulpes vulpes. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Aspergillus giganteus, Colias pelidne, Colias interior, Colias meadii, Colias eurytheme, Coryphopterus lipernes, Coryphopterus glaucofrenum, Coryphopterus eidolon, Gnatholepis thompsoni, Elacatinus evelynae, Dendrobium loddigesii Dendrobium devonianum, Dysoxylum binectariferum, Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus dombeyii, Nothofagus nervosa, Nothofagus obliqua, Sula nebouxii, and Sula variegata. This article also documents the addition of 39 sequencing primer pairs and 15 allele specific primers or probes for Paralithodes camtschaticus.

International audience; Species distributed along wide environmental ranges are expected to be either plastic or adapted to local optima. The elucidation of which of these alternatives prevails, is crucial in planning breeding and conservation strategies for not yet domesticated species. Austrocedrus chilensis (Cupressaceae) is the most commercially important conifer of the temperate forests of Argentina and the target of a domestication program. A steep precipitation gradient characterizes its Argentinean range.* Variation within and differentiation among four natural populations of this Patagonian cypress representative of two contrasting precipitation regimes (>1300 and 330 mm per y) were assessed by analyzing several morpho/architectural traits in one-year-old seedlings grown in a greenhouse. * Progenies from one of the two xeric populations did not differ from those corresponding to both humid-site populations. The two most variable populations in terms of additive genetic variance belonged to contrasting precipitation regimes. Differentiation among populations was low as measured by each and every variable (average Qst = 0.088). Morphological traits related to the main axis size would have a dubious adaptive meaning.* The results suggest that the Patagonian cypress would have not evolved genetic pools adapted to local optima, and thus it appears to be a phenotypically plastic species, at least regarding growth at juvenile age.; Les espèces presentant de vastes aires de répartition avec des fortes variations de l'environnement sont soit plastiques, soit adaptées à des optima locaux. Identifier laquelle de ces deux alternatives est celle qui prévaut est une étape cruciale pour planifier des stratégies d'amélioration génétique ou de conservation d'espèces non encore domestiquées. La différenciation entre populations était faible tant pour chaque trait que pour l'ensemble des traits (Qst = 0.088). Les caractéristiques morphologiques liées à la taille de l'axe principal n'auraient donc que peu signification en termes d'adaptation.* Les résultats suggèrent que le cyprès de Patagonie n'aurait pas développé de pools génétiques adaptés aux optima locaux. Il semble être une espèce phénotypiquement plastique, au moins en ce qui concerne la croissance au stade juvénile.

The genetic control of tree ring growth in Douglas-fir in response to the drought and heat-wave that occurred in 2003 in Europe was studied with microdensity profiles in three clonal experiments located in three different French regions. The drought and heat-wave significantly affected Douglas-fir wood formation. The Chassenoix site (Northeast of Massif-Central) was more severely affected that the other two: the 2003 year-ring was narrower and less dense than in the other sites and than the previous (2002) and following (2004) year-rings in the same site: ring growth stopped earlier and latewood did not develop completely. The year-rings 2004 and 2002 were very similar in this site. There was a significant genetic control for all ring parameters in the three sites and during the three years. The heritability was highly variable between years and among sites, without any clear pattern in this variability, except in Chassenoix where it was slightly lower in the 2003 year-ring. Variables measuring the response of trees to the 2003 event, i.e., the difference in ring width between 2002 and 2003, or between 2003 and 2004, showed a very variable degree of genetic control, from very low to relatively high. Douglas-fir seemed plastic enough to acclimate to the drought and heat-wave and then to recover during 2004. Furthermore the level of heritability estimated demonstrates that Douglas-fir has an adaptive potential that could be useful for multi-generation long-term response., La réponse du douglas à la canicule de 2003 en France a été étudiée à l'aide de profils microdensitométriques obtenus sur des arbres de 3 tests clonaux situés dans 3 régions différentes. La canicule a significativement affecté la formation du bois du douglas. Les arbres du site de Chassenoix, situé dans le Morvan, ont réagi plus fortement que ceux des 2 autres : le cerne de l'année de la canicule est plus étroit et moins dense que le même cerne dans les 2 autres sites et plus étroit et moins dense que les cernes immédiatement antérieur (2002) et postérieur (2004) dans le même site ; la formation du bois s'est arrêtée plus tôt et le bois final ne s'est pas complètement développé. À Chassenoix, le cerne de l'année 2004 ressemble plus au cerne 2002 qu'au cerne 2003, ce qui traduit une récupération. Nous mettons en évidence un contrôle génétique significatif pour toutes les variables intra-cernes dans les 3 sites, pour les 3 années 2002, 2003 et 2004. Les héritabilités sont très variables entre caractères, sites et années, sans structure particulière, sauf à Chassenoix où ces héritabilités sont légèrement plus faibles durant l'année de la canicule. Des variables décrivant la réponse des arbres entre 2002 et 2003 puis 2003 et 2004 sont très irrégulièrement contrôlées génétiquement, avec des héritabilités allant de 0 à près de 0,5. Le douglas semble avoir été suffisamment plastique pour s'acclimater à la sécheresse et canicule puis pour récupérer en 2004 une croissance proche de celle de 2002. De plus, son potentiel génétique démontré par le niveau d'héritabilité estimé lui donne également une capacité adaptative multi-génération à plus long terme.

International audience; Shoot growth and dieback were compared among progenies of nursery-grown seedlings of Nothofagus obliqua belonging to seven progenies of the same provenance (Quila-Quina, Argentina). First-year shoots consisted of one growth unit (GU) and second-year shoots of one or two GUs. The probability of development of two GU was similar for all progenies. Progenies were different in terms of shoot size, terminal bud abscission, the extent of shoot dieback after shoot extension and the node of origin of the relay shoot on the first shoot. Plants with a second-year shoot consisting of two GUs had a thicker stem and more nodes than those with single-GU shoots. The selection of N. obliqua seed trees based on architectural traits suitable for forestry development at specific sites must contemplate variability among progenies and their probabilities of successful development under different conditions.
