Abstract: The Computed Tomography Imaging Spectrometer (CTIS) permits a snapshot acquisition of a hyperspectral cube, through the creation of an image of indirect measurements which is then traditionally used for reconstruction of the cube. This reconstruction step is time-consuming and only yields an approximation of the original cube. Following a compressed learning framework, we compare the performance of a classification task carried out on reconstructed cubes on one hand, directly on the raw images on the other. Regarding the latter case, we propose in particular the use of a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture called CTIS-Net, whose architecture is tailored to benefit from the specific structure of CTIS images. Results show a sizable increase compared to classification with a standard architecture and compared to a conventional classification on the reconstructed cubes.

Abstract: Around the world, thousands of reservoir dams have flooded valleys and become concrete symbols of the Anthropocene. These landscapes, as well as material or immaterial cultural heritages, were flooded and thus became invisible, even though they remain in the memories of local populations. Today, alternative technologies can enable inhabitants to reappropriate these lost heritages and, in a way, make them visible again. 3D digital tools can effectively recreate representations of these landscapes and restore the visibility of these underwater heritage sites. In this study, we propose a 3D geographic information system methodology combined with 3D geovisualization to recreate sunken landscapes, and we demonstrate the results using the valley of the Gorges de la Loire in France as an example. We show how developing a historical database can provide a “backup copy” of lost landscapes and cultural heritage sites, enabling populations to safeguard and restore these features in their memory following flooding.

Abstract: International audience; Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a very popular way of acquiring video within contexts such as remote data acquisition or surveillance. Unfortunately, their viewpoint is often unstable, which tends to impact the automatic processing of their video flux negatively. To counteract the effects of an inconsistent viewpoint, two video processing strategies are classically adopted, namely registration and stabilization, which tend to be affected by distinct issues, namely jitter and drifting. Following our prior work, we suggest that the motion estimators used in both situations can be modeled to take into account their inherent errors. By acknowledging that drifting and jittery errors are of a different nature, we propose a combination that is able to limit their influence and build a hybrid solution for jitter-free video registration. In this work, however, our modeling was restricted to 2D-rigid transforms, which are rather limited in the case of airborne videos. In the present paper, we extend and refine the theoretical ground of our previous work. This addition allows us to show how to practically adapt our previous work to perspective transforms, which our study shows to be much more accurate for this problem. A lightweight implementation enables us to automatically register stationary UAV videos in real time. Our evaluation includes traffic surveillance recordings of up to 2 h and shows the potential of the proposed approach when paired with background subtraction tasks.

Abstract: Wood is an essential component of rivers and plays a significant role in ecology and morphology. It can be also considered as a risk factor in rivers due to its influence on erosion and flooding. Quantifying and characterizing wood fluxes in rivers during floods would improve our understanding of the key processes but is hindered by technical challenges. Among various techniques for monitoring wood in rivers, streamside videography is a powerful approach to quantify different characteristics of wood in rivers, but past research has employed a manual approach that has many limitations. In this work, we introduce new software for the automatic detection of wood pieces in rivers. We apply different image analysis techniques such as static and dynamic masks, object tracking, and object characterization to minimize false positive and missed detections. To assess the software performance, results are compared with manual detections of wood from the same videos, which was a time-consuming process. Key parameters that affect detection are assessed including surface reflections, lighting conditions, flow discharge, wood position relative to the camera, and the length of wood pieces. Preliminary results had a 36 % rate of false-positive detection, primarily due to light reflection and water waves, but post-processing reduced this rate to 15 %. The missed detection rate was 71 % of piece numbers in the preliminary result, but post-processing reduced this error to only 6.5 % of piece numbers, and 13.5 % of volume. The high precision of the software shows that it can be used to massively increase the quantity of wood flux data in rivers around the world, potentially in real-time. The significant impact of post-processing indicates that it is necessary to train the soft-ware in various situations (location, timespan, weather conditions) to ensure reliable results. Manual wood detections and annotations for this work took more than one human-month of labor. In comparison, the presented software coupled with an appropriate post-processing step performed the same task in real-time (55 hr) on a standard desktop computer.

Abstract: International audience; The identification of tree species from bark images is a challenging computer vision problem. However, even in the era of deep learning today, bark recognition continues to be explored by traditional methods using time-consuming handcrafted features, mainly due to the problem of limited data. In this work, we implement a patch-based convolutional neural network alternative for analyzing a challenging bark dataset Bark-101, comprising of 2587 images from 101 classes. We propose to apply image re-scaling during the patch extraction process to compensate for the lack of sufficient data. Individual patch-level predictions from fine-tuned CNNs are then combined by classical majority voting to obtain image-level decisions. Since ties can often occur in the voting process, we investigate various tie-breaking strategies from ensemble-based classifiers. Our study outperforms the classification accuracy achieved by traditional methods applied to Bark-101, thus demonstrating the feasibility of applying patch-based CNNs to such challenging datasets.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we explore a post-processing method to enhance coarse semantic segmentation of historical aerial images. We propose to use deep edges to generate semantically meaningful superpixels that we integrate as additional pairwise potentials in a dense conditional random field. We apply our approach on very high resolution images acquired between 1975 and 1995 and annotated with land use land cover labels. Results show the interest of our approach compared to other post-processing methods.

Abstract: International audience; Industries nowadays have an increasing need of real-time and accurate vision-based algorithms. Although the performance of object detection methods improved a lot thanks to massive public datasets, instance detection in industrial context must be approached differently, since annotated images are usually unavailable or rare. In addition, when the video stream comes from a head-mounted camera, we observe a lot of movements and blurred frames altering the image content. For this purpose, we propose a framework to generate a dataset of egocentric synthetic images using only CAD models of the objects of interest. To evaluate different strategies exploiting synthetic and real images, we train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for the task of object detection in egocentric images. Results show that training a CNN on synthetic images that reproduce the characteristics of egocentric vision may perform as well as training on a set of real images, reducing, if not removing, the need to manually annotate a large quantity of images to achieve an accurate performance.

Abstract: The computed tomography imaging spectrometer (CTIS) is a snapshot hyperspectral imaging system. Its output is a 2D image of multiplexed spatiospectral projections of the hyperspectral cube of the scene. Traditionally, the 3D cube is reconstructed from this image before further analysis. In this paper, we show that it is possible to learn information directly from the CTIS raw output, by training a neural network to perform binary classification on such images. The use case we study is an agricultural one, as snapshot imagery is used substantially in this field: the detection of apple scab lesions on leaves. To train the network appropriately and to study several degrees of scab infection, we simulated CTIS images of scabbed leaves. This was made possible with a novel CTIS simulator, where special care was taken to preserve realistic pixel intensities compared to true images. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of compressed learning on a simulated CTIS system.

Abstract: Clément Douarre gratefully acknowledges ANRT for CIFRE PhD funding under 2017/0639.; International audience; Annotation of images in supervised learning is notably costly and time-consuming. In order to reduce this cost, our objective was to generate images from a smalldataset of annotated images, and then use those synthesized images to help the network’s training process. In this article, we tackled for illustration with agriculturalmaterial the difficult segmentation task of apple scab on images of apple plant canopy by using convolutional neural networks. We devised two novel methods ofgenerating data for this use case: one based on a plant canopy simulation and the other on Generative Adversatial Networks (GANs). As a result, we found thatsimulated data could provide an important increase in segmentation performance, up to a 17% increase of F1 score (a measure taking into account precision andrecall), compared to segmenting with weights initialized on ImageNet. In this way, we managed to obtain, with small datasets, higher segmentation scores than theones obtained with bigger datasets if using no such augmentations. Moreover, we left our annotated dataset of scab available for the plant science imaging com-munity. The proposed method is of large applicability for plant diseases observed at a canopy scale.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we propose to address the difficult task of bark recognition in the wild using computationally efficient and compact feature vectors. We introduce two novel generic methods to significantly reduce the dimensions of existing texture and color histograms with few losses in accuracy. Specifically, we propose a straightforward yet efficient way to compute Late Statistics from texture histograms and an approach to iteratively quantify the color space based on domain priors. We further combine the reduced histograms in a late fusion manner to benefit from both texture and color cues. Results outperform state-of-the-art methods by a large margin on four public datasets respectively composed of 6 bark classes (BarkTex, NewBarkTex), 11 bark classes (AFF) and 12 bark classes (Trunk12). Abstract: International audience; The land cover reconstruction from monochromatic historical aerial images is a challenging task that has recently known an increasing interest from the scientific community with the proliferation of large scale epidemiological studies involving retrospective analysis of spatial pattern. However, the efforts engaged by the computer vision community in remote sensing applications are mostly focused on prospective approaches through the analysis of high resolution multi-spectral data acquired by advanced spatial programs. Hence, four contributions are proposed in this article. They aim at providing a comparison basis for the future development of computer vision algorithms applied to the automation of the land cover reconstruction from monochromatic historical aerial images. Firstly, a new multiscale multi-date dataset composed of 4.9 million non-overlapping annotated patches of the France territory between 1970 and 1990 has been created with the help of Geography experts. This dataset has been named HistAerial (http://eidolon.univ-lyon2.fr/~remi1/HistAerialDataset/). Secondly, an extensive comparison study of state-of-the-art texture features extraction and classification algorithms including deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) has been performed. It is presented in the form of an evaluation. Thirdly, a novel low-dimensional local texture filter named Rotated-CorneR Local Binary Pattern (RCRLBP) is presented as a simplification of the Binary Gradient Contours filter through the use of an orthogonal combination representation. Finally, a novel combination of low-dimensional texture descriptors, including the R-CRLBP filter, is introduced as a Light Combination of Local Binary Patterns (LCoLBP). 14. GOURAMIC: A Software to Estimate Historical Land Use in Epidemiological Studies

Abstract: International audience; Among the various existing and mathematically equivalent definitions of the skeleton, we consider the set of critical points of the Euclidean distance transform of the shape. The problem of detecting these points and using them to generate a skeleton that is stable , thin and homotopic to the shape has been the focus of numerous papers. Skeleton branches correspond to ridges of the distance map, i.e. continuous lines of points that are local maxima of the distance in at least one direction. Extracting these ridges is a non-trivial task on a discrete grid. In this context, the average outward flux, used in the Hamilton-Jacobi skeleton [43], and the ridgeness measure [28] have been proposed as ridge detectors. We establish the mathematical relation between these detectors and, extending the work in [18], we study various local shape configurations, on which closed-form expressions or approximations of the average outward flux and ridgeness can be derived. In addition , we conduct experiments to assess the accuracy of skeletons generated using these measures, and study the influence of their respective parameters.

Abstract: International audience; Coin grading means evaluating coins’ physical condition. In this paper, we proposed a process for coin grading by quantification of "unexpected elements" such as scratches and dirty marks. We detect respectively significant and tiny “unexpected elements” with the help of handcrafted filters and Deep Learning techniques. The result of our process, which is close to the manual expert one, is considered as a useful help for numismatists.

Abstract: International audience; Environmental exposure to agricultural pesticides (EEAP) resulting from the drift of agricultural pesticides from treated farmland is suspected to be a risk factor for several diseases, including cancers. The long latency period of cancer development, and evidence on the impact of early exposures stress the need for historical exposure information to capture these exposures. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used in environmental epidemiology studies to assess EEAP. Crop acreage proximate to subjects residences has been suggested as a surrogate for EEAP. Retrospective characterization of EEAP is then essential. While Corine Land Cover (CLC) provides land cover data since 1990, earlier data are lacking limiting the capacity to capture the life-course effects of exposure. The use of satellite images or historical aerial images has been suggested. However, characterization of land use from theses images is time and resource consuming. Thereby, this study aim to develop an innovative automated software to analyze the historical monochromatic aerial images in order to reconstruct the historical land cover to characterize EEAP retrospectively

Abstract: International audience; For everyone, the identification of tree is a difficult task. The main organ of the plant used generally to identify a tree is the leaf. However, due to the large variability of the shapes of leaves, it is difficult to obtain good recognition results. Moreover, sometimes the bark is a very distinctive feature and we think it may be possible to improve the recognition rate by considering it. The main purpose of this article is to investigate how we can combine the features extracted respectively from the leaf and the bark images to recognize the tree the photos come from. An important point is the consideration of the confusion matrix that can be constructed between several species, when the form of a leaf or the shape of a bark is common to a number of tree species. So, we present various strategies of fusion including belief functions and compare them on a public database of 72 species of trees and shrubs, which can be find in metropolitan France.

Abstract: National audience; L’urbanisation de ces dernières décennies a indéniablement fait évoluer notre rapport aux plantes dans notre vie quotidienne. Il n’en reste pas moins que, d’une part, des générations de botanistes ont accumulé des connaissances concernant les espèces végétales et que, d’autre part, nombreuses sont les personnes intéressées par la nature qui les entoure et qui sont conscientes que les ressources naturelles sont un trésor à préserver. Cependant, il faut bien avouer que pour une majorité d’individus, la botanique reste difficilement abordable. Dans le cadre du projet ANR ReVeRIES (Reconnaissance de Végétaux Récréative, Interactive et Educative sur Smartphone), nous proposons d’utiliser les technologies mobiles pour aider l’homme à connaître son environnement et plus précisément les végétaux qui l’entourent.

Abstract: International audience; For recognizing coins, the graved release date is important information to identify precisely its monetary type. However, reading characters in coins meets much more obstacles than traditional character recognition tasks in the other fields, such as reading scanned documents or license plates. To address this challenging issue in a numismatic context, we propose a training-free approach dedicated to detection and recognition of the release date of the coin. In the first step, the date zone is detected by comparing histogram features; in the second step, a topology-based algorithm is introduced to recognize coin numbers with various font types represented by binary gradient map. Our method obtained a recognition rate of 92% on synthetic data and of 44% on real noised data.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose a comparative study of various segmentation methods applied to the extraction of tree leaves from natural images. This study follows the design of a mobile application, developed by Cerutti et al. (published in ReVeS Participation-Tree Species Classification Using Random Forests and Botanical Features. CLEF 2012), to highlight the impact of the choices made for segmentation aspects. All the tests are based on a database of 232 images of tree leaves depicted on natural background from smartphones acquisitions. We also propose to study the improvements, in terms of performance, by using pre-processing tools such as the interaction between the user and the application through an input stroke, as well as the use of color distance maps. The results presented in this paper shows that the method developed by Cerutti et al. (denoted Guided Active Contour), obtains the best score for almost all observation criteria. Finally we detail our online benchmark composed of 14 unsupervised methods and 6 supervised ones.

24. An automatic video monitoring system for estimating driftwood discharge in large rivers

Abstract: We propose a propagation algorithm to obtain a skeleton with "good properties".Our algorithm combines RDMA and Laplacian of Gaussian filtering.The complexity is linearly proportional to the number of pixels of image.Our method is compared to three existing methods. The skeleton is an essential shape descriptor providing a compact representation of a shape that can be used in the context of real object recognition. However, due to the discretization, the required properties to use it for graph matching (homotopy to the shape, consequently connectivity, thinness, robustness to noise) may be difficult to obtain simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a new skeletonization algorithm having all these properties, based on the Euclidean distance map. More precisely, the algorithm cleverly combines the centers of maximal balls included in the shape and the ridges of the distance map. Post-processing is then applied to thin and prune the resulting skeleton. We compare the proposed method to three fairly recent methods and demonstrate its good properties.

Abstract: National audience; Le suivi multi-objets est une des thématiques centrales de l'analyse vidéo du fait de son large champ d'application. Nous nous intéressons ici plus particulièrement aux applications en vidéo-surveillance. Ainsi, nous décrivons un ensemble d'améliorations destinées à l'algorithme de suivi multi-objets proposé par Di Lascio (CVIU, 2013). En particulier, nous généralisons le suivi en retirant la spécialisation faite pour les piétons; nous intégrons le modèle de scène et de visualisation développé dans (Rogez, VISAPP 2013) afin de permettre un raisonnement tridimensionnel permettant de mieux gérer les occultations; et enfin nous améliorons le mécanisme de formation et destruction des groupes d'objets grâce à l'introduction d'une passe d'association supplémentaire ainsi que d'un critère de similarité de recouvrement. Enfin, nous évaluons le système proposé sur des vidéos synthétiques et réelles afin de montrer l'apport de nos modifications. L'algorithme proposé améliore sensiblement les performances générales par rapport à la version originale, notamment pour la création et destruction des groupes, et ouvre la possibilité d'un raisonnement tridimensionnel.

We compare the proposed method to three fairly recent methods and show its good properties., Le squelette est un descripteur de formes important qui fournit une représentation compacte de la forme étudiée pouvant être utilisée en reconnaissance d'objets réels. Néanmoins, du fait de la discrétisation, les propriétés requises pour construire un graphe (finesse, robustesse au bruit, homotopie, donc par conséquent connexité) peuvent être difficiles à obtenir simultanément. La squelettisation proposée, basée sur la carte de distance, a toutes ces propriétés. Plus précisément, l'algorithme extrait les centres des boules maximales de la forme ainsi que les crêtes de la carte de distance pour les combiner de manière intelligente. Un post-traitement est utilisé pour amincir et élaguer le squelette. Ces différentes étapes se font en temps linéaire. Le squelette ainsi obtenu a été comparé à d'autres squelettes de la littérature et nous avons mis en évidence ses « bonnes » propriétés pour l'appariement de graphes.

Abstract: We propose a high-level interpretation of leaf contours through CSS analysis.Leaf margins are described by an original string representation of vectorial symbols.Methods inspired from string processing are adapted to this objects.We use this spatially-rich descriptor to perform species classification.Performance is compared with state-of-the-art shape descriptors, and shows competitive results. In the context of an automated leaf identification process, the use of thorough leaf margin descriptors is essential given the importance of this criterion in the determination of the species. The spatial properties of teeth along the leaf contour are something to keep track of, which is made possible through the use of structured representations. This paper introduces a sequence representation of leaf margins where teeth are viewed as symbols of a multivariate real valued alphabet. It presents the methods developed to make use of this description for classification and implementation in a mobile tree identifying application. The results of various classification methods are compared and discussed, both in terms of species recognition and of consistency with botanical concepts.

Abstract: International audience; With the aim of elaborating a mobile application, accessible to anyone and with educational purposes, we present a method for tree species identification that relies on dedicated algorithms and explicit botany-inspired descriptors. Focusing on the analysis of leaves, we developed a working process to help recognize species, starting from a picture of a leaf in a complex natural background. A two-step active contour segmentation algorithm based on a polygonal leaf model processes the image to retrieve the contour of the leaf. Features we use afterwards are high-level geometrical descriptors that make a semantic interpretation possible, and prove to achieve better performance than more generic and statistical shape descriptors alone. We present the results, both in terms of segmentation and classification, considering a database of 50 European broad-leaved tree species, and an implementation of the system is available in the iPhone application Folia.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present a comparative study of segmentation methods, tested for an issue of tree leaves extraction. Approaches implemented include processes using thresholding, clustering, or even active contours. The observation criteria, such as the Dice index, Hamming measure or SSIM for example, allow us to highlight the performance obtained by our guided active coutour algorithm that is specially dedicated to tree leaf segmentation (G. Abstract: International audience; We present a prior-knowledge based shadow prediction model, focused on outdoors scene, which allows to predict pixels, on the camera, which are likely to be part of shadows casted by surrounded buildings. We employ a geometrical approach which models surrounding buildings, their shadow and the camera. One innovative aspect of our method is to retrieve building datas automatically from OpenStreetMap, a community project providing free geographic data. We provide both qualitative and quantitative results in two different contexts to assess performance of our prediction model. While our method cannot achieve pixel precision easilyalone, it opens opportunities for more elaborate shadow detection algorithms and occlusion-aware models.

Abstract: International audience; In the frame of a tree species identifying mobile application, designed for a wide scope of users, and with didactic purposes, we developed a method based on the computation of explicit leaf shape descriptors inspired by the criteria used in botany. This paper focuses on the characterization of the leaf contour, the extraction of its properties, and its description using botanical terms. Contour properties are investigated using the Curvature-Scale Space representation, the potential teeth explicitly extracted and described, and the margin classified into a set of inferred shape classes. Results are presented for both margin shape characterization, and leaf classification over nearly 80 tree species.

Abstract: International audience; The detection of moving objects in video sequence is an important task in many video-surveillance systems. As a matter of fact, the output of this very first stage, named background modeling or background subtraction, determine the quality of the rest of pipelines developed for the detection, identification or tracking of persons, objects, etc. Background modeling is sometimes considered either as a trivial operation, carried out by computing a simple difference between the current frame and a single background image (or with the previous frame, etc.), or a mastered technique that do not need any improvement or development nowadays. In the latter case, one cite in general very famous methods such as Gaussian Mixture Models introduced by Stauffer and Grimson in 1999, and think this is sufficient. Unfortunately, these kinds of algorithms are limited in outdoor environments, when used in long-term surveillance applications, because of many uncontrolled and damaging events: global variation of luminance, shadows of objects, bad weather, camera tilts, etc. Since this is a key-point of video-surveillance applications, background subtraction has become a popular topic, and many techniques have been proposed since the 90's. In BMC (Background Models Challenge), we propose a new benchmark composed of almost 30 synthetic and real video sequences. Thanks to these data-sets, we are able to propose very complex situations, in various surveillance contexts (human activities or traffic for example). We have also developed a free software (BMC Wizard) that computes relevant criteria that evaluate statistical, signal and structural information from a background subtraction algorithm.

Abstract: International audience; This paper summarizes the participation of the ReVeS project to the ImageCLEF 2012 Plant Identification task. Aiming to develop a system for tree leaf identification on mobile devices, our method is designed to cope with the challenges of complex natural images and to enable a didactic interaction with the user. The approach relies on a two step model-driven segmentation and on the evaluation of high-level characteristics that make a semantic interpretation possible, as well as more generic shape features. All these descriptors are combined in a random forest classification algorithm, and their significance evaluated. Our team ranks 4th overall, 3rd on natural images, which constitutes a very satisfying performance with respect to the project's objectives.

Abstract: International audience; Identifying objects from a video stream is a fundamentaland critical task in many computer-vision applications.A popular approach is the background subtraction, whichconsists in separating foreground (moving objects) frombackground. Many methodologies have been developed forautomatic background segmentation but this fundamentaltask is still challenging. We focus here on a particular applicationof computer vision: intrusion detection in videosurveillance.We propose in this paper a multi-level methodology forevaluating and comparing background subtraction algorithms.Three levels are studied: first, pixel level to evaluatethe accuracy of the segmentation algorithm to attribute theright class to each pixel. Second, image level, measuringthe rate of right decision on each frame (intrusion vs nointrusion) and finally sequence level, measuring the accordancewith the time span where objects appear. Moreover,we also propose a new similarity measure, called D-Score,adapted to the context of intrusion detection.

Abstract: International audience; In the process of tree identi cation from pictures of leaves in a natural background, retrieving an accurate contour is a challenging and crucial issue. In this paper we introduce a method designed to deal with the obstacles raised by such complex images, for simple and lobed tree leaves. A rst segmentation step based on a light polygonal leaf model is first performed, and later used to guide the evolution of an active contour. Combining global shape descriptors given by the polygonal model with local curvature-based features, the leaves are then classi ed over nearly 50 tree species.

Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on the design of an effective method that computes the measure of circularity of a part of a digital boundary. An existing circularity measure of a set of discrete points, which is used in computational metrology, is extended to the case of parts of digital boundaries. From a single digital boundary, two sets of points are extracted so that the circularity measure computed from these sets is representative of the circularity of the digital boundary. Therefore, the computation consists of two steps. First, the inner and outer sets of points are extracted from the input part of a digital boundary using digital geometry tools. Next, the circularity measure of these sets is computed using classical tools of computational geometry. It is proved that the algorithm is linear in time in the case of convex parts thanks to the specificity of digital data, and is in O(n log n) otherwise. Experiments done on synthetic and real images illustrate the interest of the properties of the circularity measure.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a framework for counting the fallen trees,bushes and debris passing in the river by monocular vision. Automaticsegmentation and recognition of wood in the river is relatively new fieldof research. Unsupervised segmentation of the wooden objects movingin the river has been developed. A novel method is developed for theseparation of wood from water waves. The counting of number of fallentrees in the river is realized by tracking them in the consecutive continuousframes. The algorithm is tested on multiple videos of floods and theresults are evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively.

41. Automatic computation of pebble roundness using digital imagery and discrete geometry

Abstract: International audience; The shape of sedimentary particles is an important property, from which geographical hypotheses related to abrasion, distance of transport, river behavior, etc. can be formulated. In this paper, we use digital image analysis, especially discrete geometry, to automatically compute some shape parameters such as roundness i.e. a measure of how much the corners and edges of a particle have been worn away. In contrast to previous works in which traditional digital images analysis techniques such as Fourier transform (Diepenbroek et al., 1992, Sedimentology, 39) are used, we opted for a discrete geometry approach that allowed us to implement Wadell's original index (Wadell, 1932, Journal of Geology, 40) which is known to be more accurate, but more time consuming to implement in the field (Pissart et al., 1998, Geomorphologie: relief, processus, environnement, 3). Our implementation of Wadell's original index is highly correlated (92%) with the round- ness classes of Krumbein's chart, used as a ground-truth (Krumbein, 1941, Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, 11, 2). In addition, we show that other geometrical parameters, which are easier to compute, can be used to provide good approximations of roundness. We also used our shape parameters to study a set of pebbles digital images taken from the Progo basin river network (Indonesia). The results we obtained are in agreement with previous works and open new possibilities for geomorphologists thanks to automatic computation.

Abstract: In this article, we propose a new definition of the E2DT (Squared Euclidean Distance Transformation) on irregular isothetic grids such as quadtree/octree or run-length encoded d-dimensional images. We describe a new separable algorithm to compute this transformation on every grids, which is independent of the background representation. We show that our proposal is able to efficiently handle various kind of classical irregular two-dimensional grids in imagery, and that it can be easily extended to higher dimensions.

Abstract: International audience; The approximation of implicit planar curves by line segments is a very classical problem.Many algorithms use interval analysis to approximate this curve, and to handle the topology of thefinal reconstruction. In this article, we use discrete geometry tools to build an original geometricaland topological representation of the implicit curve. The polygonal approximation contains fewsegments, and the Reebgraph permits to sum up efficiently the shape and the topology of the curve.Furthermore, we propose two algorithms to process local cells refinement and local cells groupingschemes.We illustrate these schemes with a global system thatefficiently handles manual or automatic fast updates on the global reconstruction, by consideringtopological or geometrical constraints.We also compare the speed and the quality of our approach with two classical methods.

Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on the on-line recognition of digital arcs. The main contribution is to propose a simple and linear algorithm for three subproblems: on-line recognition of digital arcs coming from the digitization of a disk having (i) a fixed radius, (ii) a boundary that con- tacts a fixed point and (iii) a center that belongs to a fixed straight line. Solving such subproblems is interesting in itself, but also for the recog- nition of digital arcs. Indeed the proposed algorithm can be used as an oracle in multidimensional search techniques or can be iteratively used in a naive manner. Moreover, since the algorithm is on-line, it is a means of segmenting digital curves in a very fast way.

Abstract: International audience; The paper studies local convexity properties of parts of dig- ital boundaries. An online and linear-time algorithm is introduced for the decomposition of a digital boundary into convex and concave parts. In addition, other data are computed in the same time without any extra cost: the hull of each convex or concave part as well as the Bezout points of each edge of those hulls. The proposed algorithm involves well- understood algorithms: adding a point to the front or removing a point from the back of a digital straight segment and computing the set of maximal segments. The output of the algorithm is useful either for a polygonal representation of digital boundaries or for a segmentation into circular arcs.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a discrete approach to 2D statistical shape models construction. An object is modeled in terms of landmark points on its contour. An optimized process of intrinsic discrete properties computes then curvilinear position, curvature and normal vector for each point. The approach uses after a dynamic programming process to match points of different shapes. By identifying matched points on a set of training examples, a statistical approach with principal component analysis, computes the mean object shape, the major modes of shape variation and extracts a compact and generic model.

Abstract: International audience; We are working in collaboration with geographers to study a set of pebbles digital images. Among the features geographers want to get automatically, pebble sides number is intuitively defined as shown in Fig 1. It is merely computed after a thick polygonalisation of pebble contour. We propose an incremental and linear algorithm, free of restrictive hypothesis, which relies on previous works of Debled et al. [DRFRD05, DRFRD06, DRRRD05]. We give some results on synthetical and real images.
