International audience; Analyzing the impacts of agricultural activities on biodiversity requires a full knowledge of the ecology of the studied species. Using a trait-based approach may improve our ability to understand land use impacts on less well-studied species in order to establish general trends that will facilitate the prediction of these impacts. In this study, we applied a trait-based approach to understand the impact of land use change on ant communities in the Colombian Llanos region. Five common land uses were considered (annual crops, rubber plantations, oil palm plantations, improved pastures and semi-natural savannas) to test whether some morphological traits respond to soil properties and land uses. An RLQ analysis shows a significant common structure between species distribution, environmental factors, and morphological ant traits. This indicates that morphological traits could be used to predict the response of ant communities in different land uses since they respond to environmental characteristics as vegetation complexity, composition and management. Based on the selected morphological ant traits,three groups of land uses were differentiated: grazing-based systems, agroforestry plantations and annual crops. Agroforestry plantations, especially rubber plantations tend to host larger and specialized ant species, while grazing-based systems (i.e. improved pastures) mainly host small and generalist ants, and annual crops host more pigmented ants. These findings suggest that certain morphological traits can reflect the ability of ant species to settle down and survive in a given land use system. Our study shows that improving knowledge about trait-environment associations could be a useful way to better understand how ecological filtering shape neotropical ant communities and how they respond to landscape transformation and land use changes.

International audience; We develop a model of optimal land allocation in a developing economy that features three possible land uses: agriculture, primary and secondary forests. The distinction between those forest types reflects their different contributions in terms of public goods. In our model, reforestation is costly because it undermines land title security. Using the forest transition concept, we study long-term land-use change and explain important features of cumulative deforestation across countries. Our results shed light on the speed at which net deforestation ends, on the effect of tenure costs in this process, and on composition in steady state. We also present a policy analysis that emphasizes the critical role of institutional reforms addressing the costs of both deforestation and tenure in order to promote a transition. We find that focusing only on net forest losses can be misleading since late transitions may yield, upon given conditions, a higher level of environmental benefits.; Nous développons un modèle d'allocation optimale des terres dans une économie en développement qui présente trois utilisations possibles des terres : agriculture, forêts primaires et secondaires. La distinction entre ces types de forêts reflète leurs différentes contributions en termes de biens publics. Dans notre modèle, la reforestation est coûteuse car elle porte atteinte à la sécurité des titres fonciers. En utilisant le concept de transition forestière, nous étudions les changements d'utilisation des terres à long terme et expliquons les caractéristiques importantes de la déforestation cumulative entre les pays. Nos résultats mettent en lumière la vitesse à laquelle la déforestation nette prend fin, l'effet des coûts de tenure dans ce processus et la composition en régime permanent. Nous présentons également une analyse politique qui souligne le rôle essentiel des réformes institutionnelles portant sur les coûts de la déforestation et de la tenure afin de promouvoir une transition. Nous constatons que se concentrer uniquement sur les pertes forestières nettes peut être trompeur, car les transitions tardives peuvent produire, dans certaines conditions, un niveau plus élevé de bénéfices environnementaux.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are trace carbonaceous gases emitted in low concentrations from the continental and marine surfaces to the atmosphere. Highly reactive, these compounds are involved in atmospheric chemistry and are at the heart of many current environmental issues such as climate change related to greenhouse gases, air quality and feedback on the functioning of ecosystems. Terrestrial plant cover was previously identified as the main source of VOCs of biogenic origin. But recent studies suggest that soils could be major sources of VOCs. However, in agricultural anthropogenic landscapes, soils are subject to various and varied uses and management and are likely to modify qualitatively and quantitatively the patterns of VOC emissions. Paradoxically, agrosystem soils have been the subject of few inventories of their VOC emissions. The scarcity of knowledge on the contribution of agrosystems soils in VOC emissions motivated this work of thesis in which three objectives were pursued : i) inventory the spectra and quantify the VOCs fluxes emitted by soils in agricultural landscapes (ii) to determine the role of soil microorganisms in emissions and (iii) to identify the abiotic determinants controlling VOC emissions by soils. A first part of the work has consisted in analyzing the temporal dynamics of VOCs emissions in the field, in two observatory sites representative of the Britain agricultural landscape : the EFELE site (SOERE-PRO) comprising cultivated soils subjected to contrasting fertilization practices, and the Zone Atelier Armorique (ZAAr) including fertilized permanent meadows and wet meadows characterized by a low degree of anthropization. The second step of the work was conducted in the laboratory to clarify and complete the field observations, two series of laboratory experiments were conducted to manipulate, i) the soil organic carbon source via the input of different model molecules (ii) microbial communities by transplanting natural microbial communities into three distinct soils. This study has generated technical advances and produced entirely new results concerning both the characterization of spectra and the quantification of biogenic VOC fluxes emitted by soils. Thus, we show, in the laboratory and in the field, that a soil emits about forty masses of which only a few (1 to 4) are dominant. These VOC spectra are also specific to land uses (crop vs meadow) and fertilization practices. We also show that : i) there is a temporality of VOC emissions by soils ranging from 22 to 167 μg of VOCs per m−2 h−1, the winter period is the least emissive and ii) adds that some fertilization practices, such as pig slurry, induce a flux of methanol up to 10 times that observed by soils amended with methanised pig slurry. Regarding the role of soil microorganisms in VOCs production, we demonstrate that the VOCs spectrum is not representative of the phylogenetic diversity of the soil community but rather of the metabolic activity of active microorganisms. As for the exploration of abiotic determinants that can regulate emissions, our results suggest that the addition of organic molecules to the soil induces a rapid change in the VOC spectrum emitted by the soil, ranging from a few hours to a few days after intake. This modification is dependent on the degree of polymerization of the molecule provided. All research suggests that VOC emissions by soils are not negligible. Their key position in terms of issues requires to be of greater interest and to take them into account in future scenarios of global changes (climate and land uses), especially with regard to emerging practices of soil management in connection with the ecological transition initiated in agriculture. Cette étude aura permis de montrer, en laboratoire et sur le terrain, qu’un sol émet une quarantaine de masses dont seules quelques-unes (1 à 4) sont dominantes. Ces spectres de COVs sont par ailleurs spécifiques des usages des sols (culture vs prairie) et des pratiques de fertilisation. Nous montrons aussi : i) qu’il existe une temporalité des émissions de COVs par les sols allant de 22 à 167 μg de COVs par m−2 h−1, la période hivernale étant la moins émissive et que ii) s’ajoute que certaines pratiques de fertilisation, comme l’apport de lisier de porc, induisent un flux de méthanol pouvant atteindre jusqu’à 10 fois celui qui est observé par les sols amendés avec du digestat de lisier de porc. Concernant, le rôle des microorganismes du sol dans la production de COVs, nous démontrons que le spectre de COVs n’est pas représentatif de la diversité phylogénétique de la communauté du sol mais plutôt de l’activité métabolique des microorganismes actifs. At the present time, Greece does not have a cadaster. This unique situation at the European level is the most evident manifestation of a social and politico-historical conflict concerning the application of the rights on land. This uncertainty of the land status is originated primarily from the disputed limits of the forests and particularly from their limits with the urban. One of the consequences of this phenomenon is the encroachment and clearing of forests for the construction, resulting unsustainable transformations on the urban, ecological and landscape level. Even if this statement makes an object of public debate, it is treated only as a technical problem, this of the establishment of a cadaster. In the same time, social and cognitive stakes are raising. In this perspective, the principal objective of this thesis is to explore the sociopolitical and epistemological aspects of the questions, what is forest, how we attribute its character and how we delimit it. More broadly, this thesis tents to inscribe the relation between the forest ant the city into a political dimension. In order to answer to this problematic, the thesis puts into perspective the two sectors of public action, the forest and the urban, through an approach crossing the political geography of the environment, sociology of professions, sociology of sciences. Firstly, on the level of institutions and their effects, the research analyses the interaction between the forest and the urban policies, as well their European perspectives through archivist and bibliographic researches. It pays a particular attention to the disputed status of tenure and use of the land exploring the application of the technical and administrative devices of registry and of definition of forest. Secondly, the research field is extended by taking into account the cognitive principles that consist both the foundation and the product of these policies. The cognitive principles are explored through the study of the organization and the professional and scientific practices of expert groups. The material of analysis is the collective discourse, developed by the scientific or professional bodies of the expert groups, as well as the interviews taken from their members. The purpose of analysis is the comprehension of the role of expert groups in the game of actors and the relation with other groups with a public role, mainly the ecology movement and the jurists. Furthermore, the thesis examines the territorial aspects of these relations. On one hand it studies the case of the Parnitha mountain, a national forest park into the periurban region of Athens. On the other hand it examines the protected regions of the Natura 2000 network, treating cartographic, demographic and landscape data.In a chronological point of view, two periods are distinguished. In the first part the work explores the genealogy of the object starting with the proclamation of the Greek independent state for arriving at the insertion of the environmentalism. In the second part the problematic concerns the period starting 1974 (end of dictatorship). Firstly until the 1990’s, which is the period of institutionalization of the environment until the turn point of intersectional and territorialized policies in the frame of sustainable development; secondly, from 1990’s until the economic crisis of 2010.; Actuellement, la Grèce n’a pas de cadastre. Cette situation unique à l’échelle européenne est la manifestation la plus patente d’un conflit social et politico-historique autour de l’application des droits de propriété et des usages du sol. L’incertitude autour du statut du sol est majoritairement liée aux limites disputées des forêts et particulièrement leurs limites avec l’urbain. Une des conséquences du phénomène est l’empiétement et le défrichage des forêts pour la construction, entraînant des transformations socio-urbaines, écologiques et paysagères insoutenables. Si ce constat fait l’objet d’un débat sur la scène publique, il est traité seulement en tant que problème technique pour la création d’un cadastre. En revanche, des enjeux politiques, sociaux et cognitifs sont soulevés et méritent notre attention. Dans la perspective d’inscrire le rapport ville-forêt dans une dimension politique, l’objectif principal de cette thèse est d’explorer les aspects sociopolitiques et épistémologiques des questions suivantes : qu’est-ce qu’une forêt, comment son caractère lui est attribué et comment il est délimité. MéthodologieJe réponds à cette problématique à travers une approche au croisement de la géographie politique de l’environnement, de la sociologie des professions et la sociologie des sciences. En premier lieu, j’utilise la notion d’action publique. Elle me permet d’une part d’étudier l’interaction entre les politiques de l’Etat, les acteurs et leurs concepts et d’autre part de saisir les politiques de l’Etat en les liant aux procédures d’application et à leurs effets. Une autre raison qui m’a incitée à multiplier les angles d’approche à travers la notion d’action publique réside dans le fait qu’il existe peu d’études en Grèce sur la forêt en tant que construction sociopolitique. Autrement dit, je tente à travers mon approche de définir un champ de recherche dynamique plus large, dans la mesure où mon approche génère des résultats à plusieurs niveaux. En deuxième lieu, je cherche à mettre en perspective les deux secteurs de l’action publique, à savoir le forestier d’un côté et l’urbain de l’autre et à mettre en évidence les points d’intersection. En effet, la conception de la ville et celle de la campagne s’insèrent dans un même cadre de systèmes socio-écologiques. Cela implique l’étude de la dimension sociale dans les écosystèmes naturels ainsi que l’étude de la dimension écologique dans les villes.C’est pour cette raison que l’objet ‘forêt’ a été précisé : la forêt est une ressource naturelle qui est investie de politiques sectorielles et institutionnelles, avec un corps de spécialistes. De plus, elle est traversée par une structure socio-productive et foncière de bien commun inscrite dans son passé qui influence son statut contemporain. Ce caractère était d’ailleurs présent dans les revendications des mouvements sociaux écologiques contre des réformes qui restreignaient les terrains qualifiés de forestiers. En ce sens, cette structure politique et scientifique investit à la forêt, m’offre un point de vue privilégié pour décoder la construction sociale et scientifique des notions de la nature et de la ville et saisir les mécanismes qui les délimitent. En troisième lieu, j’étudie les territoires à l’intersection de l’action publique pour la forêt et de l’action publique pour la ville. Cette étude est basée d’une part sur une approche dynamique des territoires - ils reçoivent et ils génèrent l’action publique -, d’autre part elle part du constat que les systèmes socio-écologiques créent des inégalités environnementales qui s’inscrivent dans les territoires. Or ces inégalités environnementales ne tiennent pas seulement des inégalités d’accès aux ressources naturelles mais aussi des inégalités à la définition même de ces ressources. C’est pour cela que mon étude porte une attention particulière à la question de où naissent les politiques et les concepts.DémarcheDans une première partie, j’explore la généalogie de mon objet, c'est-à-dire avant l’environnementalisme. Dans une deuxième partie, j’explore mon objet après 1974, c'est-à-dire la fin de la dictature des colonels. D’abord jusqu’aux années 1990, au tournant des politiques de développement durable, ensuite jusqu’à la fin des années 2010 et le début de la crise économique. Au cours de ma recherche sur les politiques sectorielles et ses institutions, j’essaye d’une part de comprendre les logiques, les objectifs et les effets derrière les lois et les turbulences de l’administration, d’autre part je tente de dénaturaliser et déconstruire les techniques de ces politiques. Ce travail s’appuie sur une bibliographie sectorielle et juridique que je tente de compléter avec une histoire de l’application, de l’économie forestière, de la démographie et notamment avec des informations sur la construction dans les forêts à partir de l’entre-deux-guerres. Concernant ma recherche sur les acteurs, je dresse le portrait collectif des spécialistes. J’étudie les groupes d’experts parce qu’ils ont une position cruciale dans la production, la légitimation et la validation des politiques et des concepts dans la pratique. J’explore leur origine sociale, les rapports entre eux et avec d’autres groupes sociaux, notamment les juristes et le mouvement écologique, leurs pratiques et leurs attitudes professionnelles et scientifiques, notamment sur la construction dans les forêts. Pour ce travail, je traite le discours collectif des spécialistes apparu dans les revues scientifiques et dans les actes des colloques après les années 1970. Enfin, l’enquête de terrain se déroule en deux parties. D’abord sur le mont Parnès de l’Attique qui se trouve dans l’espace périurbain de la capitale et qui est aussi un parc naturel. Cette enquête me permet d’étudier un type de territoire, menacé par la construction périurbaine, pour la protection duquel les politiques normatives forestières sont nées. Je recours à une palette de sources : travaux d’histoire locale, archives, données démographiques, cartes, observations, entretiens. L’enquête sur les Régions Protégées du réseau européen Natura me permet d’analyser les nouveaux modes de gestion inter-sectionnels et territorialisés à partir les années 1990 et leur relation avec les agents traditionnels. Elle s’appuie sur une documentation d’études de gestion et d’entretiens avec des agents de l’écologie, de la gestion territoriale et de l’administration. RésultatsMon étude sur l’urbanisation du mont Parnès montre que la construction dans les forêts commence dans l’entre-deux-guerres, destinée initialement aux couches sociales aisées, puis progressivement aux couches moyennes. En revanche, l’expansion de la ville à travers l’action des plus pauvres s’est effectuée sur les terrains agricoles et les friches. Ce type d’urbanisation dans la forêt s’inspire de l’idéal des cités-jardins mais sans son contenu de réforme sociale. Il est né d’un « goût » pour la forêt chez les élites, romantique et anti-urbain. Il occupe les clairières agro-forestières de la montagne qui relèvent à l’origine d’un régime de propriété et d’usage communautaire datant de l’empire ottoman. D’ailleurs, l’accès privilégié à cette ressource agro-forestière a été la base majoritaire du pouvoir politique et de l’essor démographique de l’espace montagnard jusqu’au 20ème siècle. Dans le cas des forêts de l’Attique, le foncier a orienté l’urbanisation, mais aussi le statut de protection du parc forestier national.Ma recherche sur les deux politiques sectorielles, la forestière et l’urbaine, montre qu’elles sont fondées sur l’image des modèles européens. Toutefois, toutes les deux sont confrontées à la réalité sociale et écologique d’un pays différent des pays d’origine. La politique forestière se fonde tout au long du 19ème siècle sur la base du productivisme sylvicole. Or elle doit gérer une ressource qui appartient au pâturage organisé en communauté. La politique urbaine s’est construite après la guerre sur les principes de la planification centrale mais elle doit gérer une urbanisation spontanée.Malgré cette distance entre les idéaux et la réalité, la communauté des forestiers est restée plus critique que les urbanistes face à l’adoption des modèles européens. Le fait que l’ensemble des professionnels travaille pour l’État, ainsi que la proximité avec les courants paysans, lui ont permis de construire une conscience professionnelle basée sur l’intérêt public et l’indépendance nationale. Notamment pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, les forestiers ont formulé des savoirs et des pratiques qui les éloignaient du productivisme sylvicole et les ont rendu « écologues avant la lettre ». Au contraire les urbanistes grecs, issus d’une formation architecturale, se sont étroitement alignés sur les notions et les pratiques de la planification urbaine européenne, sans les adapter. Ensuite ma recherche sur la période d’après l’insertion de l’environnementalisme montre que malgré ce passé du secteur forestier, dans les années 1970, l’administration de l’environnement se fonde sur la filière des ingénieurs de l’espace qui ont endossé le rôle décisionnel en préservant le rôle de « gardiens » pour les forestiers. Les politiques environnementales se traduisent notamment par la voie normative. Les dispositifs techniques et juridico-administratifs de délimitation des droits et des usages au sol, comme la définition juridique forestière et le cadastre, sont investis d'une valeur politique importante et extraordinaire dans le cadre européen afin de couvrir l’impuissance et les lacunes de la politique urbaine. De cette façon, la politique forestière a joué un rôle déterminant dans la formation de l’espace anthropogénique. Or, en se focalisant sur la confrontation avec la construction, elle a imposé la politique urbaine au monde rural, même quand celui-ci souffrait des problèmes contraires (désertification humaine, abandon de la terre, boisement naturel). Enfin, le caractère normatif et absolu des politiques entrave la régulation et provoque des manipulations renouvelées, car chaque fois qu’on tente de fixer les droits au sol, des revendications nouvelles s’éveillent et multiplient les points de contestation. L’environnement fait l’objet de deux approches différentes pour les deux communautés d’experts. La communauté des forestiers incorpore l’environnementalisme via la nouvelle notion de la forêt, issue de l’écologie forestière, pour inscrire le maximum des terrains sous la protection forestière en tant que propriété publique. Elle le fait au moyen d’une action syndicaliste puissante et avec un esprit au fort caractère identitaire, très marqué par l’opposition aux réformes de la définition de la forêt. La communauté des urbanistes s’aligne sur le dogme du fonctionnalisme. Dans ce contexte, la nature est réduite à la fonction de vert urbain en zonage, la forêt est considérée comme extérieure et échappe à la vue de l’urbanisme officiel. Le fait que, contrairement aux forestiers, les urbanistes exercent leur profession en libéral, les rend moins combattants face à la construction dans les forêts. Or, même les urbanistes critiques sous-estiment les conséquences écologiques du phénomène, sans faire la distinction avec la question de la construction spontanée populaire.Ensuite, je montre que pendant la période des courants du développement durable, à partir des années 1990, le service forestier, sans être reformé, est particulièrement visé par les politiques néolibérales de restriction des services publics. La politique spatialisée semble être valorisée, mais seulement en apparence. Les faibles tentatives de franchir la ligne dure entre l’espace urbain et l’espace naturel prennent fin avec la crise des années 2010.Pourtant, de nouvelles notions de la forêt émergent en dépassant les cloisonnements sectoriels. Elles traitent la forêt comme un usage de sol parmi d’autres tout en valorisant des écosystèmes de végétation basse méditerranéenne. Ces mutations se reflètent sur l’institutionnalisation de nouvelles régions protégées et sur leurs modes de gestion renouvelées. Ma recherche sur la nouvelle gestion inter-sectionnelle et territorialisée des régions protégées instituée dans les années 2000 montre la complexité et la fragilité de la transition. Le fait que plusieurs agents chargés de la gestion de ces régions constatent que le service forestier est plus compétent pour la gestion de ces régions le prouve. Enfin, malgré cette prise de conscience, surtout chez les aménageurs, du problème de la distinction dure entre les politiques forestières et d’aménagement du territoire et malgré les tentatives pour l'adoucir, les politiques étatiques, les forestiers et les urbanistes ne se sont pas rencontrés.Pourtant ma recherche sur le jeu d’acteurs sur le terrain du mont Parnès montre que les mouvements sociaux qui participent également aux revendications écologiques contre la dégradation de la protection forestière et aux revendications pour les droits de la vie urbaine constituent une possibilité de rencontre de l’action publique pour la forêt et pour la ville. A partir de la crise environnementale de l’incendie de 2007, ces groupes ont construit des liaisons d’action et cognitives nouvelles en créant, dans la pratique, le droit à l’environnement en tant que droit à l’espace public.

In this context and at the request of local communities, we have been led to propose plans of TVB which gradually strengthened an interdisciplinary methodology. Through the example of Plaine Commune’s TVB plan(north of Paris), we deliver here this methodology based on a complementarity of diagnoses (regarding ecology, landscapes, projects, green space practices) and a consultation with main actors. This communication discusses considerations for the establishment of a spatialized computer model formalizing a prospective of the environmental impacts of public policies regarding land uses. This objective, once applied in West Africa, needs to face several challenges specific to the sub-region: on the one hand, the difficulty of creating a set of data strong enough for enabling the modelling process and on the other hand, the integration of the high variability of its environment, both biophysical (rainfall first) and socially (land tenures first)., Cette communication traite des éléments à considérer pour la mise en place d'un modèle informatique spatialisé formalisant l'impact prospectiviste de politiques publiques d'usage des terres en terme environnemental. Cet objectif, appliqué à l'Afrique de l'Ouest, nécessite d'intégrer des spécificités de cette sous-région, en particulier d'une part la difficulté de créer un corpus de données rendant possible cette modélisation et d'autre part l'intégration de la grande variabilité du milieu biophysique et des statuts fonciers.

This study analyzes the impact of land use on the costs of drinking water supply using a sample of water supply services (Wss) in the Vosges department in France. We introduce a switching model to account for the interactions between management regimes (public vs. delegated) and Wss prices. This model also allows for spatial interactions between Wss and omitted spatial explanatory variables. The results confirm that forest land cover reduces the price of drinking water and that spatial factors influence the choice of management and prices. It was also found that the organization of the Wss influences water prices.; Cette étude analyse l’impact de l’usage des sols sur les coûts d’alimentation en eau potable à partir d’un échantillon de services d’eau du département des Vosges en France. Nous présentons un modèle à deux régimes pour tenir compte des interactions entre le mode de gestion (publique ou déléguée) et des prix de l’eau. Ce modèle autorise également des interactions spatiales entre les services d’eau et des variables explicatives spatiales omises. Les résultats confirment que le couvert forestier réduit le prix de l’eau potable et que des facteurs spatiaux influencent le choix de mode de gestion et les prix de l’eau. On montre aussi que l’organisation des services d’eau a un impact sur les prix de l’eau

Synoptic and local atmospheric circulations explain the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall in the Brazilian Amazon. This wide geographical area is characterized by a sparse and heterogeneous rain gauges network, which limits an exhaustive monitoring of rainfall. Remote sensing is then the preferred tool to fill this gap space. However, quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE) derived from spectral Infrared (IR) and Microwave (MW), or multi-channel techniques suffer from errors. Sources of uncertainty and bias of QPE may come from the sensor calibration, the algorithms and sampling of rain fields. In this thesis, the evaluation of algorithms TRMM3B42(v6), CMORPH and PERSIANN relies on a rain gauges database which reliability is assured by rigorous quality control. Over the period 2003-2009, the inter comparison of satellite products show low agreement (coefficient of determination < 0.30) with reference database in the Legal brazilian Amazon. TRMM3B42(v6) has the best performance with a correct sampling of rain fields. In addition, a case study shows that satellite QPE errors are larger in the forest, including the product MW MWCOMB. Finally, the satellite grids correction by PDF Matching allows a detailed and improved climatologically analysis compared with reference database, Les circulations atmosphériques synoptiques et locales expliquent les variabilités spatiotemporelles des précipitations en Amazonie brésilienne. Ce vaste espace géographique est caractérisé par un réseau pluviométrique peu dense et hétérogène qui limite un suivi exhaustif des pluies. Toutefois, les estimations quantitatives des précipitations (QPE) dérivées des domaines spectraux des infrarouges (IR) et Micro-ondes (MO), ou de techniques multi canaux souffrent d´erreurs. Les sources d´incertitudes et biais des QPE peuvent provenir de la calibration des capteurs, de l´algorithmie et de l´échantillonnage des champs de pluie. The approach: 1. Companion Modeling (ComMod) is a participatory approach used over the 15 years all over the world in order to help a diversity of stakeholders progress to reach an agreement about how to collectively deal with a given issue (multiple uses of natural resources, conflict resolution, value chain organization, land uses planning, policy participatory design, participatory monitoring and evaluation...). The approach achieves lasting impacts for empowerment at both local and national levels thanks to a twofold specificity: methodological and strategic. 2. The methodology focuses on a specific capacity building objective: to let the targeted groups learn by doing right from the first step, through an autonomous and collective practice of designing solutions to a common issue, then assessing and improving these solutions. The role of the support team is limited to monitoring only. The aim is to establish a dynamic autonomous learning-by-doing process which will continue after the light external intervention and make incremental empowerment impacts from local to national levels. 3. The approach also strongly focuses on defining an initial institutional strategy to impact the whole institutional context, from local to national levels. The strategy is defined around the identification of the needed first and smallest change of the local context for a first but lasting impact on empowerment, and, from there, the prior relationships and capacity building that need to be established to set in motion the essential first socio institutional step previously identified. 4. As a result, ComMod approach consists in a light support of (i) the prior design of an empowerment strategy, and (ii) three 2 days participatory workshops (for about 25 people, from the local aimed group) dispatched on 2 years. 5. The empowerment strategy is collectively designed by a local strategic alliance rallied at the beginning of the project. Then participatory workshops used specific role playing games in which participants themselves design the game, and then test their own ideas on how to collectively deal with the issue. These simulation games enable participants to explore future scenarios, by 'playing' their ideas and assessing the consequences in the game/model. As the roles of the different players preserve the diversity of stakeholders, potential impacts are assessed for each stakeholder's group, in peculiar distinguishing disadvantaged groups. 6. Lasting empowerment impacts on local autonomy are expected after the intervention, and both at local and national levels, thanks to the autonomous learning-by-doing process: (i) local autonomous improvement of the initial participatory decisions and (ii) progressive autonomous advocacy to embed local issues into national policies. 7. The approach is mastered by an increasing international community of practice (www.commod.org), which provides reference people, guidelines, training materials and trainings. The evaluation: 8. Between April and July 2012, IFAD has supported the evaluation of the oldest ComMod experiment ("Opération Poas" 1999-2000, Senegal River Valley, Senegal). The objective of this past intervention was to empower rural district councils so that they would be able to autonomously (i) design then manage a local land uses planning, (ii) oppose higher powers (specially centralized State agencies) to defend local interests and points of view; (iii) embed their local needs in national policy frameworks. The chosen site for the experiment was the largest and most complex rural district of Senegal: the Ross Bethio Communauté Rurale, that covers the whole Delta of Senegal River. 9. Evaluation showed sustainable local impacts, whether in the short term (e.g. after three 2-days-workshops, the district council has designed and implemented its own planning to deal with the key issues it has chosen; this also represented a step for the district council to learn about more inclusiveness in its decision-making), or in the medium term (e.g. after the end of the support, the district council found alone the means to develop infrastructure, to organize internally to manage the issue, and even to efficiently defend local needs from top-down programs and behaviors), or in the long term (e.g. 12 years after, some local councils still use their 'Poas' plan to oppose to land grabbing). 10. Evaluation also showed national impacts, whether in the short term (e.g. 2 years after the end of the support, a council of ministers council stipulated that the method should taken up in the whole country), or in the medium term (e.g. each regional plan takes into account the local land uses needs identified during the Poas experiment), and in the long term (e.g. 12 years after, the methodology designed by the local council during the ComMod experiment is acknowledged throughout country, but also in some bordering countries, to set district land uses planning). 11. These different impacts have been reached through an autonomous progressive diffusion, from the initial (1998-2000) well-thought capacity- and relationships--building and institutional strategic facilitation.

High altitude alpine ecosystems are likely to be highly sensitive to future climate change. Understanding long-term tree stand dynamics may be a key requirement for forecasting such changes. Here, we present a high resolution record of paleobotanical macroremains covering the last 11 700 years, from a small subalpine pond situated in the inner French Alps, at 2035 m a.s.l. The early presence of larch ( Larix decidua), arolla pine ( Pinus cembra) and birch ( Betula) at this elevation, just after the end of the Younger Dryas cold transition, suggests the occurrence of either glacial tree-refugia located nearby in the northwestern Alps, or a previously unrecorded early and rapid tree migration. The 8200 cal. BP cooling event is characterized by a rapid and limited expansion of mountain pine ( Pinus mugo/uncinata type). Mixed stands of larch, birch and arolla pine established at 8300 cal. BP and were present through the mid Holocene. After the Holocene climatic optimum, at 5600 cal. BP, recurrent fires led to the development of highly dynamic and more diversified forests, with larch, birch, arolla pine, mountain pine and fir ( Abies alba). Natural and anthropogenic disturbances, e.g., fires, avalanches, slash-and-burn and other agricultural practices, influenced subsequent vegetation until the last millennium when tree-pasture established around the lake. The data indicate that the vegetation was progressively dominated by open larch woodland from 4000 years ago, and was clearly established during the Middle Ages (1250 cal. BP) up to the nineteenth century, when land began to be abandoned. The modern vegetation, dominated by larch and arolla pine and resulting from land abandonment, tends to resemble the communities that occurred from 8300 to 4000 cal. BP, before the postulated anthropogenic alteration of subalpine forest ecosystems. The plant macroremains analysis provides a unique and precise record of stand-to-local vegetation composition and dynamics that can bridge paleoecology and forest management.

International audience; Two sediment budgets, for two widely different hydrological settings, have been prepared, compared and analysed to determine altered hydrological conditions resulting from land-use changes, over extended time periods. French alpine rivers are currently undergoing severe channel entrenchment. This has resulted from the accumulated effects of anthropo-genic activity and climatic factors. Bridges and dikes are threatened by the entrenchment, which is the consequence of a major decline in hillslope erosion that began toward the end of the 19th century. On the other hand, in the Western Sierra Madre (northern Mexico), river channels have been rising for some decades, and at the same time widening; this is a consequence of severe hillslope erosion, which is both linear and laminar, and mainly due to over-grazing and deforestation. Both cases clearly demonstrate the impact of anthropogenic activities and, to a lesser extent, climate change, on hydrological conditions.

International audience; Soil macrofauna was surveyed in six sites characterised by different vegetation types on five occasions in the Western Ghats, India. Sampling sites included a primary forest, a weakly disturbed forest (slightly logged in the past), a highly disturbed forest (intensively logged), an Acacia auriculiformis plantation (8 years old), a pasture with high density of Phoenix humilis and a pasture without P. humilis. We showed that both land management and temporal variability induced significant changes in the soil macrofauna. Forest sites hosted larger densities of soil macroorganisms. The effect of seasons was apparent as some clear modifications in the fauna composition occurred. Some groups like earthwonns mainly exhibited temporal variability whereas others like millipedes were chiefly affected by land management options. The seasonal rhythms of soil macrofauna were poorly expressed in the pasture plots and the Acacia plantation, but were particularly clear in the forest sites. This interaction between land management and temporal patterns may be explained by some changes in the species composition associated with certain land-uses. Our approach was based on a between-within classes PCA that proved particularly useful by providing statistical tests and a hierarchy of land management and temporal rhythm effects

International audience; The Mediterranean mountains of Morocco are faced with numerous erosion problems: topsoil scouring through sheet (1 to 5 t/ha/yr), rill (10 to 100 t/ha/yr) and tillage erosion (1 to 60 t/ha/yr), gully erosion on hill slopes (100 to 300 t/ha/yr), landslide and embankment degradation around wadies, floods and reservoir siltation. Linear erosion being more important than sheet erosion on steep slopes, runoff energy is more important on the mountains than rainfall energy. Therefore, a simple irrigator was used to measure the pre-pounding rainfall (Pi) and the stable infiltration rate (If) after a simulated rainfall of 50 mm at an intensity of 80 mm/h on a 1-m² surface, in 64 plots representative of various soils and land uses (forests, agroforests, grazing and cropping lands) on 15 to 40% hillslopes. Significant correlations (R=0.95 to 0.70) were observed between stable infiltration rate (If) and (i) topsoil characteristics (organic matter content, stable macroaggregates, cohesion, bulk density); and (ii) with soil surface features (surface covered and surface closed by stones, compacted and crusted) . These results emphasized the possibility to include data on land uses, soils, slopes, and indicators such as prepounding rainfall, infiltration, water-stable macro-aggregates, sealing crusts and compaction of the topsoil in a Geographic Information System (GIS) dealing with runoff and erosion risks in mountainous areas. Intensive human activities (overcultivation and over-grazing) have reduced the soil organic matter content and increased the soil surface compaction and the risk of runoff and erosion. Reforestationcan reverse this situation, but it is not easily accepted by farmers, because theirrangeland surface would be reduced. Agroforestry, by improving topsoil organicmatter stock and hydrodynamics features, allows a sustainable and acceptablesteep-land agriculture.; Dans les montagnes méditerranéennes du Maroc, les problèmes d'érosion sont variés et importants : décapage des horizons humifères par érosion en nappe (1 à 5 t/ha/an). érosion en rigoles (10 à 100 t/ha/an) et érosion aratoire lors du travail du sol (1 à 60 t/ha/an), ravinement des versants (100 à 300 t/ha/an). mouvements en masse, dégradation des berges des oueds, envasements des barrages, coulées boueuses, etc. Sur les fortes pentes des montagnes méditerranéennes, l'érosion linéaire est nettement plus importante que l'érosion en nappe, car l'énergie du ruissellement est plus forte que celle des pluies. Pour évaluer les risques de ruissellement et d'érosion, on a donc cherché des indicateurs de la capacité du sol à se désagréger et à produire du ruissellement. C'est pourquoi, un simulateur de pluies simplifié (irrigateur à rampe) a été mis au point pour mesurer sur le terrain (1 m²) la pluie d'imbibition (Pi) et la vitesse d'infiltration finale (If) avec des pluies simulées de 50 mm de hauteur et des intensités de 80 mm/h. Soixante-quatre placettes, représentant les différents sols, pentes (15 à 40 %) et utilisations des terres (forêts, agroforêts, parcours, cultures) ont été testées. Des corrélations significatives (R = 0,95 à 0,70) ont été observées entre l'infiltration et (i) certaines caractéristiques de l'horizon superficiel du sol (taux de matière organique, macro-agrégats stables à l'eau, cohésion, densité apparente) ; (ii) les états de surface (surfaces couvertes et surfaces fermées par les croûtes, les cailloux et le tassement). Ces résultats permettent d'évaluer à l'aide d'un système d'information géographique (SIG) le risque d'érosion en montagne en considérant les utilisations des terres, les sols, les pentes et certains indicateurs, tels que l'infiltration, la teneur en macro-agrégats stables, l'encroûtement et la compaction du sol en surface. Le surpâturage et la mise en culture des terres forestières réduisent la couverture végétale des terres ainsi que le taux de matière organique et compactent le sol. Les risques de ruissellement et d'érosion augmentent. Les reboisements restaurent la situation, mais soustraient une partie de leurs parcours aux paysans et sont peu acceptés. L'agroforesterie améliore les caractéristiques hydrodynamiques des sols et permet une agriculture de montagne durable et mieux acceptée.
