Abstract

Sophia Antipolis; International audience; We aim at exploring the different approaches to design interactive applications for groups of users using a set of interacting surfaces to perform their tasks with an optimal user experience. Participants are invited to present both the models and/or design methods as well as the case studies and applications they are studying in this context. We would like to set up a discussion group in order to put each person's work in perspective with the notion of territoriality applied to ambient computing and multiple devices. The territoriality theory may serve as a basis for the design of complex interactive applications of quality. From these discussions will emerge a mapping of models and design methods that could be mutualized and combined.

Abstract

International audience; Assessing human bodies’ postures and positions enables to design new interaction techniques, to understand users’ performances and to evaluate ergonomics of devices. In addition to the applications for improving Human-Computer Interaction, human movement analysis is at the heart of other types of usages including sports, rehabilitation, gesture recognition, etc. This workshop aims at providing a platform for researchers and designers to discuss the challenges related to the processing (e.g., data collection, treatment, interpretation, recognition) of human movement (e.g., motor skills, amplitude of movements, limitations). We expect to identify the main challenges to be addressed and come up with a research agenda to give HCI new perspectives and suggest promising directions.

Abstract

International audience; User Interface (UI) design remains an open, wicked, complex and multi-faceted problem, owing to the ever increasing variability of design options resulting from multiple contexts of use, i.e., various end-users, heterogeneous devices and computing platforms, as well as their varying environments. Designing multiple UIs for multiple contexts of use inevitably requires an ever growing amount of time and resources that not all organizations are able to afford. Moreover, UI design choices stand on end-users' needs elicitation, which are recognized to be difficult to evaluate precisely upfront and which require iterative design cycles. All this complex variability should be managed efficiently to maintain time and resources to an acceptable level. To address these challenges, this article proposes a variability management approach integrated into a UI rapid prototyping process, which involves the combination of Model-Driven Engineering, Software Product Lines and Interactive Genetic Algorithms.

Abstract

International audience; Developing persuasive interactive system faces the challenge of describing multiple-domain goals to be achieved, along with an context-aware driving of persuasion. We developed ProSPer, a model capable of dealing with this challenges and we implemented two experiments using an Android application and a selfmonitoring bracelet. The preliminary results shows that participants understood and applied effectively the model, giving further design prospectives of research and development.

National audience; L’interaction personne-système et l’intelligence artificielle sont deux disciplines qui ont suivides trajectoires parallèles au cours du temps tout en se rejoignant et se complétant naturellementsur différents domaines aux problématiques riches depuis une quarantaine d’années.Sans souci d’exhaustivité mais plutôt de représentativité, après avoir dressé un historique desinterfaces entre interaction personne-système et intelligence artificielle, particulièrement focalisésur la genèse, ce chapitre passe en revue quatre domaines sources de fertilisation croisée.Les interfaces utilisateur dites intelligentes sont un premier domaine typique à ce sujet. Parmiles nombreuses approches possibles d’interaction intelligente, les agents conversationnels animésaffectifs constituent un domaine à part. La capitalisation, la formalisation et l’exploitationde connaissances ergonomiques pour la conception et l’évaluation des systèmes interactifsdébouchent sur des travaux combinant nécessairement méthodes et modèles de l’interactionpersonne-système et de l’intelligence artificielle. La synergie entre visualisation et fouille dedonnées est également mise en avant dans ce chapitre.

Abstract

International audience; Mobile and portable devices require the definition of new user interfaces (UI) capable of reducing the level of attention required by users to operate the applications they run to improve the calmness of them. To carry out this task, the next generation of UIs should be able to capture information from the context and act accordingly. This work defines an extension to the UsiXML methodology that specifies how the information on the user is modeled and used to customize the UI. The extension is defined vertically through the methodology, affecting all layers of the methodology. In the Tasks & Concepts layer, we define the user environment of the application, where roles and individuals are characterized to represent different user situations. In the Abstract UI layer, we relate groups of these individuals to abstract interaction objects. Thus, user situations are linked to the abstract model of the UI. In the Concrete UI layer, we specify how the information on the user is acquired and how it is related to the concrete components of the UI. This work also presents how to apply the proposed extensions to a case of study. Finally, it discusses the advantages of using this approach to model user-aware applications.

Abstract

International audience; Data physicalization is a rich and vast research area that studies the use of physical artifacts to convey data. It overlaps with a number of research areas including information visualization, scientific visualization, visual analytics, tangible user interfaces, shape-changing interfaces, personal fabrication interfaces, as well as graphic design, architecture, and art. This chapter surveys academic work on data physicalization up to 2018, and also provides a brief overview of non-academic work. It discusses how data physicalization has been used for analytical purposes, for communication and education, for accessibility, for self-reflection and self-expression, and finally for enjoyment and meaning. It also discusses enabling technologies, reviews empirical studies, and surveys models and theories of data physicalization.

One of these, based on guidelines, is presented in this paper. It is based on a questionnaire guiding the analysis. It has been applied to study a control room of a chemical process.

International audience; Pour sa 28ème édition, la conférence francophone sur l'Interaction Homme-Machine (IHM) vient en Suisse pour la première fois, à Fribourg. Cette édition marque aussi un événement important de l’AFIHM : ses vingt ans ! La conférence, se tenant du 25 au 28 octobre 2016, est présidée par Denis Lalanne (Human-IST, Université de Fribourg) et Laurence Nigay (Université Grenoble Alpes). IHM 2016 est un lieu d'échanges entre les différents acteurs de la recherche en Interaction Homme-Machine. Abstract

Distributed User Interfaces (DUIs) have been imagined in order to support end users in carrying out interactive tasks that could be distributed in space (e.g., some subtasks are carried out in different locations) and time (e.g., some subtasks are carried out during different time intervals, depending on who is contributing to the task. Classical interactive applications involving a single-user, single-context user interface are rarely developed in a way that distributing parts or whole of the user interface is made effective and efficient. In order to facilitate the deployment of such distributed user interfaces, this thesis provides the following contributions: a series of models capturing the various aspects of a DUI based on new concepts (i.e. distribution scene and scenario), an engineering method for specifying DUIs based on these concepts, and a supporting toolkit providing the developers with distribution primitives; Les interfaces distribuées ont été imaginées pour supporter l'utilisateur final dans son accomplissement de tâches interactives qui peuvent être distribuées dans le temps (par exemple, des sous-tâches peuvent être accompliées durant différents intervalles de temps, en fonction de qui contribue à la tâche) et dans l'espace (par exemple, des sous-tâches peuvent être accomplies à différents endroits). Les applications interactives classiques, impliquant un seul utilisateur dans un seul contexte d'usage, ont rarement été développées d'une façon à permettre la distribution de tout ou partie de l'interface utilisateur de manière effetive et efficace. En vue de faciliter le déploiement de telles interfaces utilisateur distribuées, cette thèse apporte les contributions suivantes: une série de modèles capturant différents aspects d'une interface distribuée basée sur de nouveaux concepts (i.e., le graphe de distribution, le scénario de distribution), une méthode d'ingénierie permettant de spécifier ces interfaces sur base de ces concepts et une boîte à outils fournissant au développeur des primitives de distribution.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we introduce the online version of our ReaderBench framework, which includes multi-lingual comprehension-centered web services designed to address a wide range of individual and collaborative learning scenarios, as follows. First, students can be engaged in reading a course material, then eliciting their understanding of it; the reading strategies component provides an in-depth perspective of comprehension processes. Second, students can write an essay or a summary; the automated essay grading component provides them access to more than 200 textual complexity indices covering lexical, syntax, semantics and discourse structure measurements. Third, students can start discussing in a chat or a forum; the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) component provides in- depth conversation analysis in terms of evaluating each member’s involvement in the CSCL environments. Eventually, the sentiment analysis, as well as the semantic models and topic mining components enable a clearer perspective in terms of learner’s points of view and of underlying interests.

Abstract

Human-computer interaction becomes sophisticated, multimodal and multi device and needs to be well-designed with the aim of facilitating application correction (i.e. to correcting errors/bugs in the application) or extension (i.e. adding new functionalities or modifying existing tasks). This thesis is focused on building a methodology of designing and specifying User Interface (UI) behaviour. The Unified Modelling Language (UML) is used to describe in detail the conceptual model and to define all its objects. The methodology flux diagram is provided with the specification of the consistency and the completeness properties of the transformation model. To support the methodology, we implement a graphic Dialog Editor in which Models are organized in three levels (abstract, concrete and final) according to Cameleon Reference Framework (CFR) and, whose process respects the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach.
