Abstract: A measurement is presented of dijet and 3-jet cross sections in low-|t| diffractive deep-inelastic scattering interactions of the type ep -> eXY, where the system X is separated by a large rapidity gap from a low-mass baryonic system Y. Data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.0 pb^(-1), are used to measure hadron level single and double differential cross sections for 44 GeV. The energy flow not attributed to jets is also investigated. The measurements are consistent with a factorising diffractive exchange with trajectory intercept close to 1.2 and tightly constrain the dominating diffractive gluon distribution. Viewed in terms of the diffractive scattering of partonic fluctuations of the photon, the data require the dominance of qqbarg over qqbar states. Soft colour neutralisation models in their present form cannot simultaneously reproduce the shapes and the normalisations of the differential cross sections. Models based on 2-gluon exchange are able to reproduce the shapes of the cross sections at low x_pom values., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables

Abstract: The total cross section for the photoproduction process with a leading proton in the final state has been measured at gamma p centre-of-mass energies W of 91, 181 and 231 GeV. The measured cross sections apply to the kinematic range with the transverse momentum of the scattered proton restricted to p_Tproton Xp')(W,z)/dz is observed to be independent of W and z within the measurement errors and amounts to 8.05 +- 0.06 stat +- 0.89 syst mub on average. The data are well described by a Triple Regge model in which the process is mediated by a mixture of exchanges with an effective Regge trajectory of intercept alpha_i(0)=0.33 +- 0.04 stat +- 0.04 syst. The total cross section for the interaction of the photon with this mixture (gamma alpha_i -> X) can be described by an effective trajectory of intercept alpha_k(0)=0.99 +- 0.01 stat +- 0.05 syst. Predictions based on previous triple Regge analyses of pp-> pX data assuming vertex factorisation are broadly consistent with the gamma p data. The measured cross sections are compared with deep inelastic scattering leading proton data in the same region of z and pT_proton for photon virtuality Q^2 > 2.5 GeV^2. The ratio of the cross section for leading proton production to the total cross section is found to rise with Q^2., 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, analysis has been extended by comparison with pp data

Abstract: The production of hard di-jet events in photoproduction at HERA is dominated by resolved photon processes in which a parton in the photon with momentum fraction x_gamma is scattered from a parton in the proton. These processes are sensitive to the quark and gluon content of the photon. The differential di-jet cross-section dsigma/dlog(x_gamma) is presented here, measured in tagged photoproduction at HERA using data taken with the H1 detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.2 pb^(-1). Using a restricted data sample at high transverse jet energy, E_(T,jet)>6 GeV, the effective parton density f_gamma,eff(x_gamma) = [q(x_gamma) + bar(q)(x_gamma) +9/4g(x_gamma)] in the photon in leading order QCD is measured down to x_gamma=0.05 from which the gluon density in the photon is derived., 19 pages, 5 figures and 2 tables

Abstract: The elastic electroproduction of rho mesons is studied at HERA with the H1 detector for a photon virtuality in the range 1 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2 and for a hadronic centre of mass energy in the range 30 < W < 140 GeV. The shape of the pipi mass distribution in the rho resonance region is measured as a function of Q^2. The full set of rho spin density matrix elements is determined, and evidence is found for a helicity flip amplitude at the level of 8 +- 3 % of the non-flip amplitudes. Measurements are presented of the dependence of the cross section on Q^2, W and t (the four-momentum transfer squared to the proton). They suggest that, especially at large Q^2, the gamma^*p cross section develops a stronger W dependence than that expected from the behaviour of elastic and total hadron-hadron cross sections., 55 pages, 24 figures, 13 tables submitted to Eur. Abstract: Interactions of the type ep → eXY are studied, where the component X of the hadronic final state contains two jets and is well separated in rapidity from a leading baryonic system Y. Analyses are performed of both resolved and direct photoproduction and of deep-inelastic scattering with photon virtualities in the range 7.5 < Q2 < 80 GeV2. Cross sections are presented where Y has mass MY < 1.6 GeV, the squared four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex satisfies \t\ < 1 GeV2 and the two jets each have transverse momentum pjetT > 5 GeV relative to the photon direction in the rest frame of X. Models based on a factorisable diffractive exchange with a gluon dominated structure, evolved to a scale set by the transverse momentum p̂T of the outgoing partons from the hard interaction, give good descriptions of the data. Exclusive qq̄ production, as calculated in perturbative QCD using the squared proton gluon density, represents at most a small fraction of the measured cross section. The compatibility of the data with a breaking of diffractive factorisation due to spectator interactions in resolved photoproduction is investigated.

Abstract: Photoproduction data collected with the H1 detector at HERA in 1994 are used to study the cross-sections for inclusive charged particle production and the structure of the photon. The differential cross-sections dσ/dp2T, for |η| < 1 in the HERA laboratory frame, and dσ/dη for PT > 2GeV/c and PT > 3 GeV/c have been measured. Model calculations of these cross-sections, based on perturbative QCD, indicate that the results are sensitive to the parton densities of the photon as well as to higher order effects, which are phenomenologically treated by multiple interactions. This sensitivity is exploited to determine the leading order cursive Greek chiγ distribution of partons in the photon using a new method based on high PT charged particles. The gluon content of the photon is extracted and found to rise with decreasing cursive Greek chiγ.

Abstract: Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Abstract: A search for new bosons possessing couplings to lepton-quark pairs is performed in the H1 experiment at HERA using 1994 to 1997 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37pb^-1. First generation leptoquarks (LQs) are searched in very high Q^2 neutral (NC) and charged (CC) current data samples. The measurements are compared to Standard Model (SM) expectations from deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A deviation in the Q^2 spectrum previously observed in the 1994 to 1996 dataset at Q^2 \gsim 15000GeV^2 remains, though with less significance. This deviation corresponded to a clustering in the invariant mass spectrum at M \simeq 200 GeV which is not observed with the 1997 dataset alone. The NC DIS data is used to constrain the Yukawa couplings lambda of first generation scalar and vector LQs in the Buchmueller-Rueckl-Wyler effective model. Scalar LQs are excluded for masses up to 275GeV for a coupling of electromagnetic strength, lambda=0.3. A sensitivity to coupling values \lsim 1 is established for masses up to 400GeV for any LQ type. The NC and CC DIS data are combined to constrain lambda for arbitrary branching ratios of the LQ into eq in a generic model. For a decay branching ratio into e^+ u pairs as small as 10%, LQ masses up to 260 GeV are ruled out for lambda=0.3. LQs possessing couplings to mixed fermion generations, which could lead to signals of lepton flavor violation (LFV), are searched in events with a high transverse momentum mu or tau. No mu+X or tau+X event candidate is found that is compatible with LQ kinematics. Constraints are set on the Yukawa coupling involving the mu and tau lepton in a yet unexplored mass range.

Abstract: The double-differential inclusive di-jet cross section in photoproduction processes is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The cross section is determined as a function of the average transverse jet energy ETjets for ranges of the fractional energy xγjets of the parton from the photon side. An effective leading order parton distribution in the photon is determined at large parton fractional energies for scales between 80 < pT2 < 1250 GeV2. The measurement is compatible with the logarithmic scale dependence that is predicted by perturbative QCD.

Abstract: A search for events with an imbalance in transverse momentum and with isolated high energy leptons has been carried out at the positron-proton collider HERA. One event with an e- and five events with a μ± are found together with evidence for undetected particles carrying transverse momentum. Within the Standard Model the dominant origin of events with this kind of topology is the production of W bosons with subsequent leptonic decay. Three of the six events are within measurement errors found in a region of phase space likely to be populated by this process, while the remaining events show kinematic properties which are atypical of all Standard Model processes considered.

Abstract: The electroproduction of rho mesons with proton diffractive dissociation for Q^2 > 7 GeV^2 and the elastic electroproduction of Phi mesons for Q^2 > 6 Gev^2 are studied in e^+ p collisions at HERA with the H1 detector, for an integrated luminosity of 2.8 pb-1. The dependence of the cross sections on P_t^2 and Q^2 is measured, and the vector meson polarisation obtained. The cross section ratio between proton dissociative and elastic production of rho mesons is measured and discussed in the framework of the factorisation hypothesis of diffractive vertices. Abstract: Measurements of ep scattering with squared 4-momentum transfer Q^2 up to 35000 GeV^2 are compared with the expectation of the standard deep-inelastic model of lepton-nucleon scattering (DIS). For Q^2 > 15000 GeV^2, N_{obs} =12 neutral current candidate events are observed where the expectation is N_DIS = 4.71 \pm 0.76 events. In the same Q^2 range, N_{obs} =4 charged current candidates are observed where the expectation is N_{DIS} = 1.77 \pm 0.87 events. The probability P(N \geq N_{obs}) that the DIS model signal N fluctuates to N \geq N_{obs} in a random set of experiments is 6 10^{-3} for neutral current and 0.14 for charged current. The difference in the observed and expected number of Neutral Current events is mostly due to events at large masses M = sqrt{xs} in which the positron is backscattered at large y = Q^2/M^2., 30 pages, latex, 8 Figures
