Exposure to complex mixtures of environmental contaminants may have severe consequences in free-living. Under natural conditions, organisms are also exposed to other stressors, including parasites. Both chemical exposure and parasite infection have been well studied and documented, but have in many cases been investigated independently from one another. However, it is crucial to simultaneously assess their combined effect on wild organisms given that parasites may interfere with the fate of environmental contaminants within their host through their bioaccumulation capacity. Based on a field study, completed by an experimental approach, I investigated the fate and consequences of six families of organic contaminants, and some of their metabolites, in a host-parasite system composed of a freshwater fish, the European chub, Squalius cephalus, and its intestinal parasite, Pomphorhynchus sp. from the Marne River, France. Specifically, I investigated whether intestinal parasites were able to accumulate toxicants and how their presence affected the stress response of their definitive host exposed to environmental contaminants, at different biological levels with the use of general biomarkers (telomere, lysozyme, peroxidase, antioxidants, oxidative damage, gut microbiota, Fulton’s index and hepatosomatic index). Importantly, we demonstrated that intestinal worms were able to accumulate organic contaminants, detoxify their hosts and that their effects on the host shifted from negative to positive as chemical exposure increased., L'exposition à des mélanges complexes de substances chimiques dans l'environnement peut avoir de graves conséquences pour les animaux sauvages. En milieux naturels, ces organismes sont également affectés par de nombreux autres facteurs de stress, y compris le parasitisme. L'exposition chimique et l'infection parasitaire ont toutes deux été bien étudiées et documentées, mais dans de nombreux cas, elles ont été étudiées indépendamment l'une de l'autre. Cependant, il est crucial d'évaluer simultanément leur effet combiné étant donné que certains parasites peuvent interférer sur le devenir des polluants chez leur hôte grâce à leur capacité de bioaccumulation. Sur la base d'une étude de terrain, complétée par une approche expérimentale, j'ai étudié le devenir et les conséquences de six familles de contaminants organiques, et certains de leurs métabolites, dans un système hôte-parasite composé d'un poisson d'eau douce et de son parasite intestinal, Pomphorhynchussp. issus de la Marne, en France. Plus précisément, j'ai cherché à savoir si ces vers intestinaux étaient capables d'accumuler des substances toxiques et comment leur présence affectait la réponse au stress de leur hôte exposé aux contaminants environnementaux, à différents échelles biologiques à l'aide de biomarqueurs généraux (télomère, lysozyme, peroxydase, antioxydants, dommages oxydatifs, microbiote intestinal, indices de Fulton et hépatosomatique). Nous avons démontré que ces vers intestinaux étaient capables d'accumuler des contaminants organiques, de détoxifier leurs hôtes et que leurs effets sur l’hôte basculaient de négatifs à positifs à mesure que l'exposition aux contaminants organiques augmentait.

Le programme de recherche « Rmines, impacts des espèces invasives sur les reptiles des massifs miniers, application à la conservation durable d’un patrimoine faunistique exceptionnel et menacé » a étudié comment les espèces invasives terrestres, dont les activités minières favorisent directement et indirectement la présence et la diffusion au sein des massifs exploités, impactent la faune reptilienne, un des éléments les plus patrimoniaux de la biodiversité terrestre néo-calédonienne. - Le programme scientifique a concerné les interactions entre les reptiles patrimoniaux des milieux ultramafiques et 3 groupes d’espèces invasives majeures : les chats harets (prédateurs supérieurs), les rongeurs du genre Rattus (prédateurs intermédiaires, voire compétiteurs alimentaires), et des espèces de fourmis invasives (compétiteurs alimentaires, voire prédateurs).- Les travaux ont permis la constitution d’une collection de référence et la publication d’une « Clé d’identification illustrée des écailles de scinques de Nouvelle-Calédonie ».

Provisioning services, such as the production of food, feed, and fiber, have always been the main focus of agriculture. Since the 1950s, intensive cropping systems based on the cultivation of a single crop or a single cultivar, in simplified rotations or monocultures, and relying on extensive use of agrochemical inputs have been preferred to more diverse, self-sustaining cropping systems, regardless of the environmental consequences. However, there is increasing evidence that such intensive agroecosystems have led to a decline in biodiversity as well as threatening the environment and have damaged a number of ecosystem services such as the biogeochemical nutrient cycles and the regulation of climate and water quality. Consequently, the current challenge facing agriculture is to ensure the future of food production while reducing the use of inputs and limiting environmental impacts and the loss of biodiversity. Here, we review examples of multiple cropping systems that aim to use biotic interactions to reduce chemical inputs and provide more ecosystem services than just provisioning. Our main findings are the identification of underlying ecological processes and management strategies related to the provision of pairs of ecosystem services namely food production and a regulation service. We also found gaps between ecological knowledge and the constraints of agricultural practices in taking account of the interactions and possible trade-offs between multiple ecosystem services as well as socioeconomic constraints. We present guidelines for the design of multiple cropping systems combining ecological, agricultural, and genetic concepts and approaches.

It is inspired by the discussions of the working group "Agroecology and soil" of the alliance between institutes on environmental research AllEnvi. Some major issues are exposed and the principles on how the use of biodiversity could improve agroecosystem management are presented.

Although biotic interactions are known to be important determinants of species establishment, it is uncertain what factors determine the net balance between positive and negative interactions thus, under what conditions biotic interactions could enhance or impede species regeneration. Bien que les interactions biotiques soient connues pour être This thesis aims to study the role of biotic interactions of shrubs with oak seedlings for regeneration of three oak species on the Aquitaine coastal dune forests, by testing how the net effect of these interactions vary along aridity gradient, between two overstory canopies and in respect to the functional strategies of three oak species in the context of climate change. This was done by using two approaches, descriptive approach using spatial point pattern data and experimental approach by transplanting the target seedlings. The results show that the spatial variation in the nature of biotic interactions is strongly relate to environmental severity conditions, where the shrub-oak seedling interactions were very sensitive to increasing summer drought and canopy opening, the interactions strength was facilitative under gap plots in the dry northern dunes in Soulac and switch on competitive under forest plots in the wet southern dunes in Seignosse. The nature of the interactions was constant across the functional strategies of the targets species of oak. For the most part, results of this thesis show general support to the original formulation of SGH which predicts increasing facilitation with increasing severity and underscore the fact that atmospheric water stress reduction by shrubs is required for oak seedling regeneration. In this perspective, silviculturist should conserve understory shrubs, in particular in gaps, in order to allow a better regeneration niche of oak seedlings. This thesis highlights the importance of considering biotic interactions in oak regeneration under current harshness climatic conditions and with expectation to have an ambitious role in alleviation future climatic change consequence in this region., Bien que les interactions biotiques soient connues pour être déterminantes dans l’établissement des espèces, il est encore difficile de savoir quels facteurs sont impliqués dans l’équilibre entre interaction positive et interaction négative. Il est de fait difficile de savoir sous quelles conditions les interactions biotiques peuvent favoriser ou empêcher la régénération des espèces. Cette thèse vise à étudier le rôle des interactions biotiques d'arbustes avec des semis de chêne sur la régénération de trois espèces de chênes sur les forêts des dunes côtières d'Aquitaine en testant comment l’effet net de ces interactions varie le long d’un gradient d’aridité, sur deux étages de canopée et en fonction des stratégies fonctionnelles de trois espèces de Chêne dans un contexte de changement global. Ce travail a été effectué en utilisant deux approches, une approche descriptive en utilisant un patron de points répartis dans l’espace et une approche expérimentale en transplantant les semis cibles. Les résultats montrent que la variation spatiale, en terme d’interactions biotiques, est fortement corrélée avec la sévérité environnementale, avec des interactions entre jeunes pousses de chêne très sensibles aux sécheresses estivales et aux trouées dans les canopées. Les interactions testées étaient de nature facilitatrice dans les plots découverts dans les dunes sèches du nord de Soulac et tournaient à la compétition sous le couvert forestier dans les dunes plus humides du sud, à Seignosse. La nature des interactions était constant entre les stratégies fonctionnelles des espèces cibles de chêne. Les résultats de cette thèse montrent de manière générale une confirmation de la formulation originale du SGH qui prédit une augmentation de la facilitation en lien avec une augmentation de la sévérité environnementale et souligne le fait que la réduction du stress hydrique atmosphérique par des arbustes est nécessaire à la régénération des semis de chêne. Dans cette perspective, le sylviculteur doit conserver les arbustes du sous-étage, en particulier dans les trouées, afin de permettre une meilleure régénération des plants de chêne. Cette thèse met en évidence la nécessaire considération des interactions biotiques dans la régénération du chêne dans les actuelles sévères conditions climatiques et le rôle prépondérant de ces interactions dans la réponse aux changements climatiques futurs probables dans cette région Aquitaine.

International audience; Biotic interaction studies have revealed a large discrepancy among experiments in target responses to the effects of neighbours, which may in part be due to both high species-specificity of plant responses and low number of target species used in experiments. Our aim was to assess facilitative responses at the community level and the role of both functional groups and ecological attributes of target species. In a sub-alpine grassland on the eastern Tibet plateau, we assessed growth responses of all species in the community to removal of a dominant shrub. We also measured changes in the main environmental variables. Species responses were analysed by functional group and in relation to their mean regional altitudinal distribution. All significant interactions were positive and affected one-third of the total species richness of the community. All functional groups were facilitated but forbs were less strongly facilitated than in the two other groups. High-alpine species were less strongly facilitated than low-sub-alpine species, but the strength of this relationship was weaker than that reported in previous work. There was evidence of a decrease in extreme temperatures below the canopy of the shrub but no variations in soil moisture. We conclude that the highly stressful conditions induced by the dry continental climate of the eastern Tibet plateau are a main driver of the exclusive dominance of positive interactions. Assessing interactive responses at the community level is likely to provide a useful tool to better understand the role of biotic interactions in community responses to environmental changes.

Questions: We addressed two poorly understood aspects of plant response to climate change: the impact of extreme climatic events and the mediating role of biotic interactions, through a study of heatwave effects on tree seedling survival rates and ability of the tree canopy to alter seedling responses. Location: Mountain belt of the northern French Alps (Maurienne Valley). Methods: The survival rates of two seedling cohorts from four tree species (Abies alba, Acer pseudoplatanus, Fraxinus excelsior and Picea abies) were measured during both the 2003 European heatwave and an average summer (2004) in deciduous broadleaf mountain forests. Seedlings were transplanted into two soil moisture conditions, and in experimental gaps or under the tree canopy. Results: The heatwave strongly decreased tree seedling survival rates, while there was an important species-specific mediating role of biotic interactions. In the wettest conditions, the tree canopy strongly increased survival of Abies, buffering the negative impact of the heatwave. In contrast, in the driest conditions, the tree canopy decreased survival of Picea and Acer, amplifying the negative impact of the heatwave. We found evidence of increasing soil water stress in the understorey of the driest community, but further studies including vapour pressure deficit measurements are needed to elucidate the driving mechanism of facilitation. Conclusions: The high species specificity of the mediating role of biotic interactions and its variation along stress gradients leads to questions on our ability to predict large-scale responses of species to climate changes.

The most common model for functional strategies and biotic interaction between trees found in the literature is one that presents shadow as being the major constraint and competition as being the prevalent relationship between species. In mixed temperate forests, at the end of the succession, softwoods are generally considered under this model to be better competitors than hardwoods. It is hence in conflict with the basic concepts of autogenic succession and contradicts the results of numerous recent experimental studies that demonstrate the existence of positive relationships between species, in particular in environments that are under physical constraints. In contrast, under the latter model, which is referred to as holistic, light is seen as a form of stress to which only some softwoods are tolerant – generally pine and juniper. The article briefly recalls the basic principles behind these two models and those proposed by the Flore forestière française (Rameau et al., 1993), and then goes on to present the results of two experimental studies conducted in the upland mixed forests of the French Alps with the aim of analyzing changes in softwood/hardwood interactions along environmental gradients. In the extremely favourable climate context of the Chartreuse forest area, the effects of shadow are negative and only competition is found in compliance with the first model. However, the angiosperms (beech and especially sycamore) are the most shade-tolerant in contrast with the softwoods (fir tree and especially spruce), which tend to suffer from very fierce competition for light. In the context of exposure to strong sunlight in the middle-range Maurienne mountains, the effects of shadow on the other hand are consistently positive and facilitation in accordance with the second model largely prevails. The softwood/hardwood opposition is no longer operative whereas tolerance to excess light and dry air becomes the relevant mechanism for biotic interactions, with a greater aptitude for facilitation in the case of shadetolerant oceanic species (beech and fir tree)., Dans la littérature, le modèle le plus courant sur les stratégies fonctionnelles et les interactions biotiques entre les arbres présente l’ombre comme une contrainte majeure et les relations entre les espèces comme dominées par la compétition. En fin de succession des forêts mixtes tempérées, les conifères sont souvent considérés dans ce modèle comme de meilleurs compétiteurs que les feuillus. Ce modèle est donc en opposition avec les concepts de base de la succession autogénique et avec les résultats des nombreuses récentes études expérimentales démontrant l’existence de relations positives entre les espèces, en particulier dans les environnements contraints physiquement. Dans ce deuxième modèle, dit holistique, la lumière est au contraire perçue comme un stress uniquement toléré par quelques conifères, généralement des pins et des genévriers. Après avoir rappelé les principes de base de ces deux modèles et ceux proposés dans la Flore forestière française (Rameau et al., 1993), nous présentons ici les résultats de deux études expérimentales réalisées dans les forêts mixtes montagnardes des Alpes françaises avec comme objectif d’analyser les changements d’interactions entre conifères et feuillus le long des gradients environnementaux. Dans le contexte climatique très favorable du massif de la Chartreuse, les effets de l’ombre sont négatifs et la compétition est seule présente conformément au premier modèle. Néanmoins ce sont les angiospermes (Hêtre et surtout Érable sycomore) qui sont les plus tolérants à l’ombre et non pas les conifères (Sapin et surtout Épicéa) qui souffrent d’une très forte compétition pour la lumière. Dans le contexte à fort rayonnement solaire de la moyenne Maurienne, les effets de l’ombre sont en revanche toujours positifs et la facilitation largement dominante conformément au second modèle. L’opposition conifères-feuillus n’est plus pertinente, la tolérance de l’excès de lumière et de la sécheresse de l’air devenant le mécanisme déterminant les interactions biotiques avec une plus forte aptitude à la facilitation pour les espèces sciaphiles océaniques (Hêtre et Sapin).
