International audience; Context. Carbon is one of the most abundant components in the Universe. While silicates have been the main focus of solid phase studies in protoplanetary discs (PPDs), little is known about the solid carbon content especially in the planet-forming regions (~0.1–10 au). Fortunately, several refractory carbonaceous species present C-H bonds (such as hydrogenated nano-diamond and amorphous carbon as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which generate infrared (IR) features that can be used to trace the solid carbon reservoirs. The new mid-IR instrument MATISSE, installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), can spatially resolve the inner regions (~1–10 au) of PPDs and locate, down to the au-scale, the emission coming from carbon grains. Aims. Our aim is to provide a consistent view on the radial structure, down to the au-scale, as well as basic physical properties and the nature of the material responsible for the IR continuum emission in the inner disk region around HD 179218. Methods. We implemented a temperature-gradient model to interpret the disk IR continuum emission, based on a multiwavelength dataset comprising a broadband spectral energy distribution and VLTI H -, L -, and N -bands interferometric data obtained in low spectral resolution. Then, we added a ring-like component, representing the carbonaceous L -band features-emitting region, to assess its detectability in future higher spectral resolution observations employing mid-IR interferometry. Results. Our temperature-gradient model can consistently reproduce our dataset. We confirmed a spatially extended inner 10 au emission in H - and L -bands, with a homogeneously high temperature (~1700 K), which we associate with the presence of stochastically heated nano-grains. On the other hand, the N -band emitting region presents a ring-like geometry that starts at about 10 au with a temperature of 400 K. Moreover, the existing low resolution MATISSE data exclude the presence of aromatic carbon grains (i.e., producing the 3.3 μm feature) in close proximity tothe star (≲1 au). Future medium spectral resolution MATISSE data will confirm their presence at larger distances. Conclusions. Our best-fit model demonstrates the presence of two separated dust populations: nano-grains that dominate the near- to mid-IR emission in the inner 10 au region and larger grains that dominate the emission outward. The presence of such nano-grains in the highly irradiated inner 10 au region of HD 179218 requires a replenishment process. Considering the expected lifetime of carbon nano-grains from The Heterogeneous dust Evolution Model for Interstellar Solids (THEMIS model), the estimated disk accretion inflow of HD 179218 could significantly contribute to feed the inner 10 au region in nano-grains.Moreover, we also expect a local regeneration of those nano-grains by the photo-fragmentation of larger aggregates.

International audience; Context. Eta Carinae is a highly eccentric, massive binary system (semimajor axis ~15.5 au) with powerful stellar winds and a phase-dependent wind-wind collision (WWC) zone. The primary star, η Car A, is a luminous blue variable (LBV); the secondary, η Car B, is a Wolf-Rayet or O star with a faster but less dense wind. Aperture-synthesis imaging allows us to study the mass loss from the enigmatic LBV η Car. Understanding LBVs is a crucial step toward improving our knowledge about massive stars and their evolution. Aims. Our aim is to study the intensity distribution and kinematics of η Car’s WWC zone. Methods. Using the VLTI-MATISSE mid-infrared interferometry instrument, we perform Br α imaging of η Car’s distorted wind. Results. We present the first VLTI-MATISSE aperture-synthesis images of η Car A’s stellar windin several spectral channels distributed across the Br α 4.052 μm line (spectral resolving power R ~ 960). Our observations were performed close to periastron passage in February 2020 (orbital phase ~ 14.0022). The reconstructed iso-velocity images show the dependence of the primary stellar wind on wavelength or line-of-sight (LOS) velocity with a spatial resolution of 6 mas (~14 au). The radius of the faintest outer wind regions is ~26 mas (~60 au). At several negative LOS velocities, the primary stellar wind is less extended to the northwest than in other directions. This asymmetry is most likely caused by the WWC. Therefore, we see both the velocity field of the undisturbed primary wind and the WWC cavity. In continuum spectral channels, the primary star wind is more compact than in line channels. A fit of the observed continuum visibilities with the visibilities of a stellar wind CMFGEN model (CMFGEN is an atmosphere code developed to model the spectra of a variety of objects) provides a full width at half maximum fit diameter of the primary stellar wind of 2.84 ± 0.06 mas (6.54 ± 0.14 au). We comparethe derived intensity distributions with the CMFGEN stellar wind model and hydrodynamic WWC models.

International audience; Aims. We aim to investigate the infrared excess of 45 Milky Way (MW) Cepheids combining different observables in order to constrain the presence of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs). Methods. We used the SpectroPhoto-Interferometry of Pulsating Stars (SPIPS) algorithm, a robust implementation of the parallaxof-pulsation method that combines photometry, angular diameter, stellar effective temperature, and radial velocity measurements in a global modelling of the pulsation of the Cepheid. We obtained new photometric measurements at mid-infrared (mid-IR) with the VISIR instrument at the Very Large Telescope complemented with data gathered from the literature. We then compared the mean magnitude of the Cepheids from 0.5 µm to 70 µm with stellar atmosphere models to infer the IR excess, which we attribute to the presence of a circumstellar envelope. Results. We report that at least 29% of the Cepheids of our sample have a detected IR excess (>3σ). We estimated a mean excess of 0.08 ± 0.04 mag at 2.2 µm and 0.13 ± 0.06 mag at 10 µm. Other Cepheids possibly also have IR excess, but they were rejected due to their low detection level compared to a single-star model. We do not see any correlation between the IR excess and the pulsation period as previously suspected for MW Cepheids, but a rather constant trend at a given wavelength. We also do not find any correlation between the CO absorption and the presence of a CSE, but rather with the stellar effective temperature, which confirms that the CO features previously reported are mostly photospheric. No bias caused by the presence of the circumstellar material is detected on the average distance estimates from a SPIPS analysis with a fitted colour excess. We also do not find correlation between the presence of IR excess and the evolution stage of the Cepheids. Conclusions. We report a fraction of 29% of Cepheids with an IR excess likely produced by the circumstellar envelope surrounding the stars. Longer period Cepheids do not exhibit greater excess than short periods as previously suspected from observations and theoretical dusty-wind models. Other mechanisms such as free-free emission, among others, may be at the origin of the formation of the CSEs. We also show that not fitting the colour excess leads to a bias on the distance estimates in our Galaxy.

It has recently been shown that the infrared (IR) emission of Cepheids, constant over the pulsation cycle, might be due to a pulsating shell of ionized gas with a radius of about 15% of that of the star radius, which could be attributed to the chromospheric activity of Cepheids. Aims. The aim of this paper is to investigate the dynamical structure of the chromosphere of Cepheids along the pulsation cycle and to quantify its size. Methods. We present Hα and calcium near-infrared triplet (Ca IR) profile variations using high-resolution spectroscopy with the UVES spectrograph of a sample of 24 Cepheids with a good period coverage from ≈3 to 60 days. After a qualitative analysis of the spectral line profiles, we quantified the Van Hoof effect (velocity gradient between the Hα and Ca IR) as a function of the period of the Cepheids. We then used the Schwarzschild mechanism (a line doubling due to a shock wave) to quantify the size of the chromosphere. Results. We find a significant Van Hoof effect for Cepheids with a period larger than P = 10 days. In particular, Hα lines are delayed with a velocity gradient up to ∆v ≈ 30 km s −1 compared to Ca IR. By studying the shocks, we find that the size of the chromosphere of long-period Cepheids is of at least ≈50% of the stellar radius, which is consistent at first order with the size of the shell made of ionized gas previously found from the analysis of IR excess. Last, for most of the long-period Cepheids in the sample, we report a motionless absorption feature in the Hα line that we attribute to a circumstellar envelope that surrounds the chromosphere. Conclusions. Analyzing the Ca IR lines of Cepheids is of importance to potentially unbias the period-luminosity relation from their IR excess, particularly in the context of forthcoming observations of radial velocity measurements from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer on board Gaia, which could be sensitive to their chromosphere.

International audience; Cepheids are the keystone of the extragalactic distance ladder since their pulsation periods correlate directly with their luminosity, through the Period-Luminosity (PL) relation (Leavitt & Pickering 1912). The discovery of the accelerated expansion of the Universe (Riess et al. 1998; 2011 Nobel prize) is largely based on the Cepheid distance ladder. However, the calibration of the PL relation is still suffering from systematics errors of at least 2% and it is the largest contributor on the Hubble constant H0 (Riess et al. 2016). These systematics could be partly due to the CircumStellar Envelopes (CSEs) of Cepheids discovered in the last decade by interferometry. Using Spitzer Space Telescope observations, we reconstruct the spectral energy distribution of 5 Cepheids and we report the observation of an infrared (IR) excess continuum. We show for the first time that the IR excess can be modeled by a free-free emission due to a thin circumstellar shell of ionized gas in the chromospheric region.
