Abstract: International audience; Lifetimes of excited states of the phosphorus isotopes 1533,34,35,36P have been measured by using the differential recoil-distance method. The isotopes of phosphorus were populated in binary grazing reactions initiated by a beam of S36 ions of energy 225 MeV incident on a thin Pb208 target mounted in the Cologne plunger apparatus. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and an early implementation of the AGATA γ-ray tracking array was used to detect γ rays in coincidence with projectile-like nuclear species. Lifetime measurements of populated states were made within the range from about 1 to 100 ps. The number of states for which lifetime measurements were possible was limited by statistics. For P33, lifetime limits were determined for the first 3/2+ and 5/2+ states at 1431 and 1848 keV, respectively; the results are compared with previous published lifetime values. The lifetime of the first 2+ state of P34 at 429 keV was determined and compared with earlier measurements. For P35, the states for which lifetimes, or lifetime limits, were determined were those at 2386, 3860, 4101, and 4493 keV, with Jπ values of 3/2+, 5/2+, 7/21−, and 7/22−, respectively. There have been no previous published lifetimes for states in this nucleus. A lifetime was measured for the stretched π(1f7/2)⊗ν(1f7/2)Jπ=(7+) state of P36 at 5212 keV and a lifetime limit was established for the stretched π(1d3/2)⊗ν(1f7/2)Jπ=(5−) state at 2030 keV. There are no previously published lifetimes for states of P36. Measured lifetime values were compared with the results of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations based on the PSDPF effective interaction. In addition, measured branching ratios, published mixing ratios, and electromagnetic transition rates, where available, have been compared with shell-model values. In general, there is good agreement between experiment and the shell model; however there is evidence that the shell-model values of the M1 transition rates for the 3/21+→1/2+ (ground state) and 5/21+→3/21+ transitions in P33 underestimate the experimental values by a factor between 5 and 10. In P35 there are some disagreements between experimental and shell-model values of branching ratios for the first and second excited 7/2− states. In particular, there is a serious disagreement for the decay characteristics of the second 7/2− state at 4493 keV, for which the shell-model counterpart lies at 4754 keV. In this case, the shell-model competing electromagnetic decay branches are dominated by E1 and M1 transitions.

Abstract: International audience; Level structure of the proton-unbound 30S states, just above the proton threshold 4394.9(7) keV, is important to understand the αp and rp processes, as it plays a crucial role in the calculation of the 26Si(α, p) and 29P(p, γ) reaction rates. The spin-parity assignments of 30S strongly determine the thermonuclear 29P(p, γ) 30S reaction rate at temperatures characteristic of explosive hydrogen burning in classical novae and type I X-ray bursts. Specifically, the rate had been previously predicted to be dominated by two low-lying, levels in the Ex = 4.7–4.8 MeV region, with spin and parity assignments of 3+ and 2+. Several experiments were performed to study the structure of 30S. The 30S Jπ values were inferred from also a comparison to the known decay schemes of the corresponding mirror states in 30Si. We present, in this paper, results for levels in 30S that are used for the 29P(p, γ) rp reaction rate calculation. The positive- and negative- parity states have been calculated using the (0+1)~ω PSDPF interaction, which is charge-independent Hamiltonian. The γ-decay lifetimes of 30S and reduced electromagnetic transition strengths were also calculated. Based on experimental information on the 30S energy spectrum as well as a comparison to the T = 1 isobaric analogue states in 30Si and 30P, the levels of excited states that are used to determine the 29P(p, γ) 30S reaction rate are proposed.

Abstract: International audience; Multinucleon transfer processes in the $^{197}$Au+$^{130}$Te at E$_{lab}$ =1.07 GeV system were studied with the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with an ancillary particle detector. For neutron transfer channels we extracted total cross sections and compared them with calculations performed with the GRAZING code. We associated to each light fragment identified in PRISMA the corresponding mass distribution of the heavy partner and, through the comparison with Monte Carlo simulations, we could infer about the role of neutron evaporation in multinucleon transfer for the population of neutron-rich heavy nuclei.

Abstract: We have performed the most comprehensive resonance-model fit of $\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ states using the results of our previously published partial-wave analysis (PWA) of a large data set of diffractive-dissociation events from the reaction $\pi^- + p \to \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ + p_\text{recoil}$ with a 190 GeV/$c$ pion beam. The PWA results, which were obtained in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3\pi} < 2.5$ GeV/$c^2$, and simultaneously in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t' < 1.0$ $($GeV$/c)^2$, are subjected to a resonance-model fit using Breit-Wigner amplitudes to simultaneously describe a subset of 14 selected waves using 11 isovector light-meson states with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $4^{++}$, and spin-exotic $1^{-+}$ quantum numbers. The model contains the well-known resonances $\pi(1800)$, $a_1(1260)$, $a_2(1320)$, $\pi_2(1670)$, $\pi_2(1880)$, and $a_4(2040)$. In addition, it includes the disputed $\pi_1(1600)$, the excited states $a_1(1640)$, $a_2(1700)$, and $\pi_2(2005)$, as well as the resonancelike $a_1(1420)$. We measure the resonance parameters mass and width of these objects by combining the information from the PWA results obtained in the 11 $t'$ bins. We extract the relative branching fractions of the $\rho(770) \pi$ and $f_2(1270) \pi$ decays of $a_2(1320)$ and $a_4(2040)$, where the former one is measured for the first time. In a novel approach, we extract the $t'$ dependence of the intensity of the resonances and of their phases. The $t'$ dependence of the intensities of most resonances differs distinctly from the $t'$ dependence of the nonresonant components. For the first time, we determine the $t'$ dependence of the phases of the production amplitudes and confirm that the production mechanism of the Pomeron exchange is common to all resonances., Comment: 224 pages, 172 figures

Abstract: International audience; We studied multinucleon transfer reactions in the Au197+Te130 system at Elab=1.07 GeV by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to a coincident detector. For each light fragment we constructed, in coincidence, the distribution in mass of the heavy partner of the reaction. With a Monte Carlo method, starting from the binary character of the reaction, we simulated the de-excitation process of the produced heavy fragments to be able to understand their final mass distribution. The total cross sections for pure neutron transfer channels have also been extracted and compared with calculations performed with the grazing code.

Abstract: International audience; The electric-octupole E3 transition strengths from the first 3− state to the ground-state transition in sd shell even-even nuclei with A=16 to 40 are investigated within the shell model framework using the effective (0+1)ℏω PSDPF interaction. For this type of transition, new effective charges for protons and neutrons have been determined. Their values 1.36 e for protons and 0.48 e for neutrons are close to those obtained previously for electric-quadrupole E2 transitions in sd shell nuclei. The calculated E3 transition strengths from the 31−→0gs+ transitions are compared to a compilation of experimental E3 data for even-even nuclei throughout the sd shell.

Abstract: Exclusive production of $\omega$ mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering $160~\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c}$ muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured in the range of photon virtuality $1~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < Q^2 < 10~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$, Bjorken scaling variable $0.003 < x_{\mathit{Bj}} < 0.3$ and transverse momentum squared of the $\omega$ meson $0.05~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < p_{T}^{2} < 0.5~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$. The measured asymmetries are sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip Generalised Parton Distributions (GPD) $E$ that are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks, the chiral-odd GPDs $H_{T}$ that are related to the transversity Parton Distribution Functions, and the sign of the $\pi\omega$ transition form factor. Abstract: International audience; The structure of the S33 nucleus was investigated in the Mg24(N14,αp) fusion-evaporation reaction using a 40-MeV N14 beam. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of 11.7 MeV and spin 19/2+. Lifetimes of the intermediate- and high-spin states have been investigated by the Doppler shift attenuation method. Data were compared with different shell-model calculations where effective interactions involving two main shells, the sd and the fp, are used.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Near- and sub-barrier fusion of various Ca + Zr isotopic combinations have been widely investigated. A recent analysis of Ca40+Zr96 data has highlighted the importance of couplings to multiphonon excitations and to both neutron and proton transfer channels. Analogous studies of Ca40+Zr90 tend to exclude any role of transfer couplings. However, the lowest measured cross section for this system is rather high (840μb). A rather complete data set is available for Ca40+Zr94, while no measurement of Ca40+Zr92 fusion has been performed in the past. Purpose: Our aim is to measure the full excitation function of Ca40+Zr92 near the barrier and to extend downward the existing data on Ca40+Zr90, in order to estimate the transfer couplings that should be used in coupled-channels calculations of the fusion of these two systems and of Ca40+Zr94. Methods: Ca40 beams from the XTU Tandem accelerator of INFN–Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro were used, bombarding thin metallic Zr90 (50μg/cm2) and ZrO922 targets (same thickness) enriched to 99.36% and 98.06% in masses 90 and 92, respectively. An electrostatic beam deflector allowed the detection of fusion evaporation residues (ER) at very forward angles, and angular distributions of ER were measured. Results: The excitation function of Ca40+Zr92 has been measured down to the level of ≃60μb. Coupled-channels (CC) calculations using a standard Woods-Saxon (WS) potential and following the line of a previous analysis of Ca40+Zr96 fusion data give a good account of the new data, as well as of the existing data for Ca40+Zr94. The previous excitation function of Ca40+Zr90 has been extended down to 40μb. Conclusions: Transfer couplings play an important role in explaining the fusion data for Ca40+Zr92 and Ca40+Zr94. The strength of the pair-transfer coupling is deduced by applying a simple recipe based on the value obtained for Ca40+Zr96. The logarithmic slopes and the S factors for fusion are reproduced fairly well for all three systems by the CC calculations, and there are no indications of a fusion hindrance at the lowest energies. In contrast, the new data for Ca40+Zr90 indicate the onset of a fusion hindrance at the lowest energies.

Abstract: International audience; The energy spectra and electromagnetic properties of Sulfur isotopes have been carried out using the PSDPF interaction. A detailed comparison, experiment versus theory, is presented for these isotopes with A = 32 (N = Z), 34 (N = Z + 2) and 36 (N = Z + 4) for normal 0 $ {\hbar {\omega }} $ (positive parity) and intruder 1 $ {\hbar {\omega }}$ (negative parity) states up to excitation energies of several MeV. Electric E2 and E3 transition strengths are also calculated and compared to available data.

Abstract: International audience; We performed a γ -particle coincidence experiment for the 60Ni+116Sn system to investigate whether thepopulation of the two-neutron pickup channel leading to 62Ni is mainly concentrated in the ground-state transition,as has been found in a previous work [D. Montanari et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 052501 (2014)]. The experimenthas been performed by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to theAdvanced Gamma TrackingArray (AGATA) demonstrator. The strength distribution of excited states corresponding to the inelastic, one- andtwo-neutron transfer channels has been extracted.We found that in the two-neutron transfer channel the strengthto excited states corresponds to a fraction (less than 24%) of the total, consistent with the previously obtainedresults that the 2n channel is dominated by the ground-state to ground-state transition.

Abstract: International audience; The neutron-rich S39 nucleus has been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of S36 ions with a thin Pb208 target. The magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the γ-ray array, CLARA, were used in the measurements. Gamma-ray transitions of the following energies were observed: 339, 398, 466, 705, 1517, 1656, and 1724 keV. Five of the observed transitions have been tentatively assigned to the decay of excited states with spins up to (11/2−). The results of a state-of-the-art shell-model calculation of the level scheme of S39 using the SDPF-U effective interaction are also presented. The systematic behavior of the excitation energy of the first 11/2− states in the odd-A isotopes of sulfur and argon is discussed in relation to the excitation energy of the first excited 2+ states of the adjacent even-A isotopes. The states of S39 that have the components in their wave functions corresponding to three neutrons in the 1f7/2 orbital outside the N=20 core have also been discussed within the context of the 0 ℏω shell-model calculations presented here.

Abstract: International audience; New results for the double spin asymmetry A(1)(p) and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g(1)(p) are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g(1)(p)(x) by about a factor of two in the region x less than or similar to 0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g(1) world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, Delta Sigma, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g(1)(p). The uncertainty of Delta Sigma is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g(1)(NS) (x, Q(2)) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants vertical bar gA/gV vertical bar = 1.22 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

Abstract: International audience; Excited states with intermediate and high spins in P33 and S33 have been populated using the Mg26(C13,npα) and Mg26(C13,2nα) fusion-evaporation reactions. The level schemes of both nuclei have been considerably extended. Utilizing γγ angular correlations the spin-parity assignment of the new excited states in P33 has been investigated. The experimentally determined results from both nuclei were compared to 0ℏω and 1ℏω truncated p-sd-pf shell-model calculations utilizing the PSDPF interaction, showing a very good agreement between experiment and theory.

Abstract: International audience; Background: No data on the fusion excitation function of Ti-48 + Fe-58 in the energy region near the Coulomb barrier existed prior to the present work, while fusion of Ni-58 + Fe-54 was investigated in detail some years ago, down to very low energies, and clear evidence of fusion hindrance was noticed at relatively high cross sections. Ti-48 and Fe-58 are soft and have a low-lying quadrupole excitation lying at approximate to 800-900 keV only. Instead, Ni-58 and Fe-54 have a closed shell (protons and neutrons, respectively) and are rather rigid.Purpose: We aim to investigate (1) the possible influence of the different structures of the involved nuclei on the fusion excitation functions far below the barrier and, in particular, (2) whether hindrance is observed in Ti-48 + Fe-58, and to compare the results with current coupled-channels models.Methods: Ti-48 beams from the XTU Tandem accelerator of INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro were used. The experimental setup was based on an electrostatic beam separator, and fusion-evaporation residues (ERs) were detected at very forward angles. Angular distributions of ERs were measured.Results: Fusion cross sections of Ti-48 + Fe-58 have been obtained in a range of nearly six orders of magnitude around the Coulomb barrier, down to sigma similar or equal to 2 mu b. The sub-barrier cross sections of Ti-48 + Fe-58 are much larger than those of Ni-58 + Fe-54. Significant differences are also observed in the logarithmic derivatives and astrophysical S factors. No evidence of hindrance is observed, because coupled-channels calculations using a standard Woods-Saxon potential are able to reproduce the data in the whole measured energy range. Analogous calculations for Ni-58 + Fe-54 predict clearly too large cross sections at low energies. The two fusion barrier distributions are wide and display a complex structure that is only qualitatively fit by calculations.Conclusions: It is pointed out that all these different trends originate from the dissimilar low-energy nuclear structures of the involved nuclei. In particular, the strong quadrupole excitations in Ti-48 and Fe-58 produce the relative cross section enhancement and make the barrier distribution approximate to 2 MeV wider, thus probably pushing the threshold for hindrance below the measured limit.

Abstract: International audience; The neutron-rich nuclei P34,35,36,37,38 were populated in binary grazing reactions initiated by a beam of S36 ions at 215 MeV incident on a thin Pb208 target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA array of escape-suppressed Ge detectors was used to detect γ rays in coincidence with projectile-like nuclear species. Further evidence to support the observed γ decay of excited states of the populated phosphorus isotopes is provided by γ−γ coincidence measurements based on the results of an earlier thick-target deep-inelastic experiment. Level schemes for P34,35,36,37,38 are presented and discussed within the context of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. In particular, new spin and parity assignments are proposed for a number of excited states of P36. The evolution with neutron number of the energy difference of the low-lying Jπ=3/2+ and 1/2+ states in the odd-A isotopes of phosphorus, as well as the relationship to nuclear collectivity, is discussed. The evolution with neutron number of the shell-model wave functions of the first Jπ=1/2+, 3/2+, and 5/2+ states of the odd-A phosphorus isotopes and of the first Jπ=3−, 4−, and 5− states of the even-A isotopes is also explored.

Abstract: International audience; Measurements of fusion excitation functions of Ni-58 + Sn-124 and Ni-64 + Sn-124 are extended towards lower energy to cross sections of 1 mu b and are compared to detailed coupled-channels calculations. The calculations clearly show the importance of including transfer reactions in a coupled-channels treatment for such heavy systems. This result is different from the conclusion made in a previous article which claimed that the influence of transfer on fusion is not important for fusion reactions of Ni + Sn. In the energy region studied in this experiment no indication of fusion hindrance has been observed, which is consistent with a systematic study of this behavior.

We present here the preliminary results of this experiment, and a full comparison with the near-by system Ni-58 + Fe-54 where evidence of fusion hindrance shows up at relatively high cross sections. The sub-barrier cross sections of Ti-48 + Fe-58 are much larger than those of Ni-58 + Fe-54. Significant differences are also observed in the logarithmic derivatives, astrophysical S-factors and fusion barrier distributions. The influence of low-energy nuclear structure on all these trends is pointed out and commented. Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential are able to reproduce the experimental results for Ti-48 + Fe-58. The logarithmic derivative of the excitation function is very nicely fit, and no evidence of hindrance is observed down to around 1 mu b. The fusion barrier distribution is rather wide, flat and structureless. It is only in qualitative agreement with the calculated distribution.

Abstract: International audience; Background: The nuclear structure of colliding nuclei is known to influence the fusion process. Couplings of the relative motion to nuclear shape deformations and vibrations lead to an enhancement of the sub-barrier fusion cross section in comparison with the predictions of one-dimensional barrier penetration models. This enhancement is explained by coupled-channels calculations including these couplings. The sub-barrier fusion cross section is also affected by nucleon transfer channels between the colliding nuclei.Purpose: The aim of the present experiment is to investigate the influence of the projectile and target nuclear structures on the fusion cross sections in the Ca40+Ni58 and Ca40+Ni64 systems.Methods: The experimental and theoretical fusion excitation functions as well as the barrier distributions were compared for these two systems. Coupled-channels calculations were performed using the ccfull code.Results: Good agreement was found between the measured and calculated fusion cross sections for the Ca40+Ni58 system. The situation is different for the Ca40+Ni64 system where the coupled-channels calculations with no nucleon transfer clearly underestimate the fusion cross sections below the Coulomb barrier. The fusion excitation function was, however, well reproduced at low and high energies by including the coupling to the neutron pair-transfer channel in the calculations.Conclusions: The nuclear structure of the colliding nuclei influences the fusion cross sections below the Coulomb barrier for both Ca40+Ni58,64 systems. Moreover, we highlighted the effect of the neutron pair-transfer channel on the fusion cross sections in Ca40+Ni64.

Abstract: Measurements of the excitation function for the fusion of Mg-24 + Si-30 (Q = 17.89 MeV)have been extended toward lower energies with respect to previous experimental data. The S-factor maximum observed in this large, positive-Q-value system is the most pronounced among such systems studied thus far. The significance and the systematics of an S-factor maximum in systems with positive fusion Q values are discussed. This result would strongly impact the extrapolated cross sections and reaction rates in the carbon and oxygen burnings and, thus, the study of the history of stellar evolution.

Abstract: We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised ^6LiD target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x_g covering the range 0.04 < x_g < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x_g. Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at x_g=0.09 and a scale of mu^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2., 13 pages, 6 figures and 3 tables

Abstract: International audience; It has been shown that the neutron 2d5/2 orbital has to be included in shell-model calculations to explain the appearance of large quadrupole collectivity observed in the neutron rich Fe and Cr of the N ≈ 40 region. This work initiated by Caurier et al. has been recently revisited. Calculations in a large valence space involving the fp proton shell and the fpgd neutron shells including a strongly reduced 1g9/2 - 2d5/2 neutron gap down to ≈ 1.5 MeV affect the whole N = 40 region and point out a new island of inversion similar to those known for light nuclei around N = 8 and N = 20. A global mecanism could be deduced, in the frame of the shell-model approach, of the emergence of islands of inversion at Harmonic-Oscillator shell gaps driven by two particle-two hole neutron excitations into quadrupole-partner orbitals across these gaps. Since now, no 5/2+ state has been assigned in previous studies of 69Ni, an ideal laboratory to search for the neutron 2d5/2 orbital. A (d,p) reaction onto a 68Ni beam produced at GANIL has been used to probe the single-particle energy of the 2d5/2 neutron orbital in 69Ni. Two 5/2+ states with important spectroscopic Shell Model as a Unified View of Nuclear Structure / Livre des résumés 10 factors lying around 2.5 MeV excitation energy have been observed, for the first time, in 69Ni. The doublet is understood as the mixing of two main configurations of spherical nature. These results are in good agreement with large-scale shell-model calculations in which 2.5 MeV 1g9/2 - 2d5/2 gap for neutrons is included, and confirm experimentally Caurier's assumption of a reduced 1g9/2 - 2d5/2 neutron gap at N = 40.

Abstract: The heavy-ion radiative capture reaction 12C(16O,γ )28Si has been studied at three energies Ec.m. = 8.5, 8.8, and 9 MeV which are close to the Coulomb barrier. The weak radiative capture process has been identified by measuring the 28Si recoils in the highly selective 0◦ spectrometer DRAGON at TRIUMF (Vancouver). The coincident γ rays have been recorded in the associated BGO array. This has allowed a complete measurement of the γ spectrum and the relative strength of all decay pathways. An important part of the decay through quasibound states close to the particle threshold and the feeding of bound states with particular deformation have been identified for the first time. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulations allowed the extraction of the full experimental radiative capture cross section. Our results suggest an important contribution of spins J π = 5− and 6+ in the entrance channel. The surprisingly large cross sections from 12 μb at Ec.m. = 8.5 MeV to 25 μb at Ec.m. = 9.0 MeV for the heavy-ion radiative capture process are discussed in terms of the interplay between statistical and structural aspects of the process.

Abstract: International audience; CaF 2 crystals as representatives of the class of ionic nonamorphizable insulators were irradiated with many different swift heavy ions of energy above 0.5 MeV/u providing a broad range of electronic energy losses (S e). Beam-induced modifications were characterized by Channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (C-RBS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD), complemented by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results from C-RBS give evidence of significant damage appearing above a S e threshold of 5 ± 2 keV/nm. A second critical S e appears around 18 ± 3 keV/nm; below this value the damage as function of ion fluence saturates at 20%, while above this the damage saturation level increases with S e , reaching ∼60% for ions of S e = 30 keV/nm. XRD measurements also show effects indicating two threshold values. Above 5 keV/nm, the widths of the XRD reflection peaks increase due to the formation of nanograins, as seen by TEM, while a significant decrease of the peak areas only occurs above 18 keV/nm. The track radii deduced from C-RBS measurements are in agreement with those extracted from the fluence evolution of the widths of the XRD peaks. Moreover, track radii deduced from the peak area analysis are slightly smaller but in agreement with previous track observations by high resolution electron microscopy. Calculations based on the inelastic thermal spike model suggest that the lower threshold at 5 keV/nm is linked to the quenching of the molten phase, whereas the threshold at 18 keV/nm can be interpreted as quenching of the boiling phase. The results of CaF 2 are compared with other nonamorphizable materials such as LiF and UO 2 .

Abstract: The level structures of the N = 50, 83As, 82Ge, and 81Ga isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA–PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the γ -ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of 78Ni (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL; International audience; It has been shown that the neutron 2d5=2 orbital has to be included in shell-model calculations to explain the large quadrupole collectivity observed in the Fe and Cr of N = 40 region, probably a new island of inversion similar to the one known for light nuclei around N = 20. Indeed, in these calculations using a large valence neutron space, the position, i.e. the singleparticle energy, of the 2d5=2 orbital is a crucial ingredient. The experiment discussed in this paper aims to determine the $\nu$1g9=2–$\nu$2d5=2 gap using the neutron stripping reaction d(68Ni; p)68Ni which has been performed at GANIL in inverse kinematics. Preliminary results are presented.

Abstract: Yrast states in the neutron-rich 1433Si19 nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215-MeV beam of 36S ions with a thin 208Pb target. An experimental setup that combines the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA and the high-efficiency γ-ray detection array CLARA was used in the experiment. Four new γ-ray photopeaks at energies of 971, 1724, 1772, and 2655 keV were observed and assigned to the 33Si level scheme. The experimental level scheme is compared with the results of 1ℏω p-sd-pf large-scale shell-model calculations using the recently developed PSDPFB effective interaction; good agreement is obtained. The structure of the populated states of 33Si is discussed within the context of an odd neutron coupled to states of the 32Si core.

Abstract: Yrast states up to (6+) in the neutron-rich 40S nucleus have been studied using binary grazing reactions produced by the interaction of a 215 MeV beam of 36S ions with a thin 208Pb target. The novel experimental setup that combines the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer, PRISMA, and the high-efficiency γ-ray detection array, CLARA, was used. A new γ-ray transition at an energy of 1572 keV was observed and tentatively assigned to the (6+)→(4+) transition. A comparison of experimental observations and the results of large-scale 0ℏω sd-pf shell-model calculations indicates that one- and two-proton excitations from the 2s1/2 to the 1d3/2 orbitals play an important role in reproducing the 40S yrast level structure and the published B(E2;0g.s.+→21+) value. The structure of the yrast states of the even-A isotopes of sulfur is interpreted in terms of the configurations of valence protons and neutrons within the context of large-scale 0ℏω sd-pf shell-model calculations.

Abstract: International audience; Hadrontherapy treatments require a very high precision on the dose deposition ( 2.5% and 1-2mm) in order to keep the benefits of the precise ions' ballistic. The largest uncertainty on the physical dose deposition is due to ion fragmentation. Up to now, the simulation codes are not able to reproduce the fragmentation process with the required precision. To constraint the nuclear models and complete fragmentation cross sections databases; our collaboration has performed an experiment on May 2008 at GANIL with a 95 MeV/u 12C beam. We have measured the fluence, energy and angular distributions of charged fragments and neutrons coming from nuclear reactions of incident 12C on thick water-like PMMA targets. Preliminary comparisons between GEANT4 (G4BinaryLightIonReaction) simulations and experimental data show huge discrepancies.

Abstract: The $^{24]$Mg + $^{24}$Mg reaction has been studied at the Legnaro Tandem at a CM bombarding energy of 45.7 MeV where a narrow and high spin resonance has been reported previously. The decay of the resonance into the inelastic and fusion-evaporation channels has been investigated. The ON and OFF resonance decay yields have been measured using, for the inelastic channels, the fragment spectrometer PRISMA and the $\gamma$ array CLARA, and, for the fusion-evaporation channels, the Si array EUCLIDES and the $\gamma$ array GASP. The resonant effects observed in both experiments are discussed and it is suggested that the resonance populates a deformed $^{48}$Cr after a Jacobi shape transition.

Abstract: The excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus $_{15}^{37}P_{22}$ have been populated in grazing reactions, using a beam of $^{36}$S ions (at 215 MeV) delivered onto a thin $^{208}$Pb target. Emitted $\gamma$ rays from excited projectile-like nuclei were detected using the CLARA array of 25 escape-suppressed Ge clover detectors in coincidence with reaction products detected and identified with the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. A level scheme is presented for $^{37}$P together with proposed spin assignments. The level structure of $^{37}$P is discussed within the context of shell-model calculations by using an improved sdpf effective interaction.

Abstract: Mass-energy and angular distributions of fission fragments for the $^{48}$Ca+$^{144,154}$Sm \to $^{192,202}$Pb, $^{40}$Ca+$^{154}$Sm \to $^{194}$Pb reactions have been measured. Fusion suppression and the presence of quasifission at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier have been observed for the reactions with the deformed target $^{154}$Sm. In the case of the spherical $^{144}$Sm target no evidence of quasifission has been found. Quasifission cross sections have been extracted from total fission-like events by analysis of their mass and angular distributions.

Abstract: The heavy-ion radiative capture reaction, 12C(12C,$\gamma$), has been investigated at energies both on- and off-resonance, with a particular focus on known resonances at Ec.m.=6.0, 6.8, 7.5, and 8.0 MeV. Gamma rays detected in a BGO scintillator array were recorded in coincidence with 24Mg residues at the focal plane of the DRAGON recoil separator at TRIUMF. In this manner, the relative strength of all decay pathways through excited states up to the particle threshold could be examined for the first time. Isovector M1 transitions are found to be a important component of the radiative capture from the Ec.m.=6.0 and 6.8 MeV resonances. Comparison with Monte Carlo simulations suggests that these resonances may have either J=0 or 2, with a preference for J=2. The higher energy resonances at Ec.m.=7.5 and 8.0 MeV have a rather different decay pattern. The former is a clear candidate for a J=4 resonance, whereas the latter has a dominant J=4 character superposed on a J=2 resonant component underneath. The relationship between these resonances and the well-known quasimolecular resonances as well as resonances in breakup and electrofission of 24Mg into two 12C nuclei are discussed.

Abstract: postscript file : 43 pages to appear in PRC : 19 pages in PRC - 1st preprint CSNSM 2004-02; 2nd preprint IPHC 06-001; A new experiment to determine the thermonuclear cross section of the 12C(alpha,gamma_0)16O reaction has been performed in regular kinematics using an intense alpha-particle beam of up to 340 muA from the Stuttgart DYNAMITRON. For the first time a 4pi-Germanium-detector setup has been used to measure the angular distribution of the gamma rays at all angles simultaneously. It consisted of an array of 9 EUROGAM HPGe detectors in close geometry, actively shielded individually with BGO crystals. The 12C targets were isotopically enriched by magnetic separation during implantation. The depth profiles of the implanted carbon in the 12C targets have been determined by Rutherford backscattering for purposes of cross section normalization and absolute determination of the E1 and E2 S factors. Angular distributions of the gamma decay to the 16O ground state have been measured in the energy range E_c.m.= 1.30-2.78 MeV and in the angular range (lab.) 30-130 degre. From these distributions, astrophysical E1 and E2 S-factor functions vs. energy have been calculated, both of which are indispensable for the modeling of this reaction and the extrapolation towards lower energies. The separation of the E1 and E2 capture channels has been done both by taking the phase value phi_12 as a free parameter and by fixing it using the results of elastic alpha-particle scattering on 12C in the same energy range.

Various theoretical predictions exist for the occurence of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands which can partially be identified with known resonance structures correlated in several reaction channels, and for which low spin members are predicted within the measured $^{24}$Mg$^{*}$ excitation energy region. The inverse kinematics reaction $^{24}$Mg$+^{12}$C has been investigated at E$_{lab}$($^{24}$Mg) = 130 MeV, an energy which enable the population of $^{24}$Mg states decaying into $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C resonant breakup states. Exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spetrometer (BRS) in coincidence with EUROBALL installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility of the IReS at Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively populated in binary reactions and their $\gamma$-decays determined by using the BRS as a master trigger. Coincident events with inelastic as well as with binary $\alpha$-transfer channels have been selected by choosing the excitation energy or the entry point via the two-body Q-values. The analysis of the binary and quasi-binary reaction channels is presented with a particular emphasis on the $^{24}$Mg-$\gamma$ and $^{20}$Ne-$\gamma$ coincidences as well as the $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C coincidences.

Abstract: The heavy-ion radiative capture reaction, $^{12}C(^{12}C,\gamma), has been investigated at beam energies around 16 MeV. Two different experiments were performed. Capture cross sections were obtained by measuring fused $^{24}$Mg residues and were found to significantly exceed values reported earlier. Subsequently, the decay pathways associated with radiative capture were delineated using the Gammasphere array. A substantial fraction of the decay was found to proceed through a few high-lying doorway states near 10 MeV in excitation.

Abstract: Extensions to the yrast and near-yrast decay sequences of the neutron-rich nucleus 1534P19 have been established through an analysis of the gamma deexcitation of fragments produced in deep-inelastic processes which occur when 230-MeV 36S ions interact with a thick target of 176Yb. The highly sensitive GASP array of escape-suppressed Ge detectors was used to measure the resulting gamma-ray deexcitations of both projectilelike and targetlike fragments. Previously unobserved excited states in 34P were observed at 3351, 6236, 2320, and (4723) keV. Several states above an excitation energy of 2.3 MeV involve intruder configurations from the f7/2 shell. The investigation of negative parity intruder states on the periphery of the "island of inversion" has an important role to play in our understanding of the evolution of nuclear structure as the island of inversion is approached.
