Abstract

International audience; This work describes a silicon tracker system developed for experiments with proton-rich radioactive ion beams at the SAMURAI superconducting spectrometer of RIBF at RIKEN. The system is designed for accurate angular reconstruction and atomic number identification of relativistic heavy ions and protons which are simultaneously produced in reactions motivated by studies of proton capture reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The technical characteristics of the tracking array are described in detail as are its performance in two pilot experiments. The physics justification for such a system is also presented.

Abstract

Nuclear magic numbers, which emerge from the strong nuclear force based on quantum chromodynamics, correspond to fully occupied energy shells of protons, or neutrons inside atomic nuclei. Doubly magic nuclei, with magic numbers for both protons and neutrons, are spherical and extremely rare across the nuclear landscape. While the sequence of magic numbers is well established for stable nuclei, evidence reveals modifications for nuclei with a large proton-to-neutron asymmetry. Here, we provide the first spectroscopic study of the doubly magic nucleus $^{78}$Ni, fourteen neutrons beyond the last stable nickel isotope. We provide direct evidence for its doubly magic nature, which is also predicted by ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions and the quasi-particle random-phase approximation. However, our results also provide the first indication of the breakdown of the neutron magic number 50 and proton magic number 28 beyond this stronghold, caused by a competing deformed structure. State-of-the-art phenomenological shell-model calculations reproduce this shape coexistence, predicting further a rapid transition from spherical to deformed ground states with $^{78}$Ni as turning point.

Abstract

International audience; The 9C breakup was studied during the SAMURAI29R1 experiment through inclusive and exclusive measurements at energies around 160 AMeV for 9C, in order to evaluate the astrophysical S18 factor for the inverse process 8B(p,γ)9C at energies in the region of astrophysical interest. The radiative proton capture on 8B is important in the hot pp chains, in explosive Hydrogen burning (ppIV and rapI), at temperatures between 0.05 < T9 < 1 K, as possible alternative paths across the A = 8 mass gap. Another goal of this experiment was a detailed study of the breakup reaction mechanism. During the experiment the nuclear breakup process was studied using a natural C target with 425 µm thickness and the Coulomb dissociation by using a natural Pb target with 150 µm thickness. The reaction products were tracked simultaneously using a system of position sensitive Si detectors and in total 1024 output channels were read out by using new dual gain preamplifiers (DGP) specially designed for the experiments of the HI-p collaboration. The SAMURAI29R1 experiment was carried out during the SAMURAI 18Oxygen 2018 Spring campaign and it is part of the HI-p collaboration together with another three experiments. Performances of the setup used and first results of the analysis are presented.

Abstract

International audience; Proton inelastic scattering of Ni72,74 and Zn76,80 ions at energies around 235 MeV/nucleon was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and studied using γ-ray spectroscopy. Angular integrated cross sections for direct inelastic scattering to the 21+ and 41+ states were measured. The Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux folding model, extended beyond 200 MeV, was used together with neutron and proton densities stemming from quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) calculations to interpret the experimental cross sections and to infer neutron to proton matrix element ratios. In addition, coupled-channels calculations with a phenomenological potential were used to determine deformation lengths. For the Ni isotopes, correlations favor neutron excitations, thus conserving the Z=28 gap. A dominance of proton excitation, on the other hand, is observed in the Zn isotopes, pointing to the conservation of the N=50 gap approaching Ni78. These results are in agreement with QRPA and large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

International audience; The unbound nucleus 26O has been investigated using invariant-mass spectroscopy following one-proton removal reaction from a 27F beam at 201 MeV/nucleon. The decay products, 24O and two neutrons, were detected in coincidence using the newly commissioned SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 26O ground-state resonance was found to lie only 18±3(stat)±4(syst) keV above threshold. In addition, a higher lying level, which is most likely the first 2+ state, was observed for the first time at 1.28+0.11−0.08 MeV above threshold. Comparison with theoretical predictions suggests that three-nucleon forces, pf-shell intruder configurations, and the continuum are key elements to understanding the structure of the most neutron-rich oxygen isotopes beyond the drip line.

Abstract

International audience; The nuclear structure of neutron rich Ne isotopes has been investigated at the recently commissioned Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) at the RIKEN Nishina Center by means of inelastic scattering and knockout reactions. A cocktail beam of unstable nuclei around 32Ne was provided by the BigRIPS fragment separator and incident on a natural carbon target at energies [approximate]220 A MeV. Reaction products were identified with the Zero Degree Spectrometer and de-excitation gamma-rays detected by the DALI2 array. The reported results demonstrate the potential for in-beam gamma-ray experiments at the RIBF.

Abstract

GANIL presently offers unique opportunities in nuclear physics and in many other fields that arise from not only the provision of low-energy stable beams, fragmentation beams and re-accelerated radioactive species, but also from the availability of a wide range of state-of-the-art spectrometers and instrumentation. A few examples of recent highlights are presented. With the construction of SPIRAL2 over the next few years, GANIL is in a good position to retain its world-leading capability. As selected by the ESFRI committee, the next generation of ISOL facility in Europe is represented by the SPIRAL2 project to be built at GANIL (Caen, France). SPIRAL 2 is based on a high power, CW, superconducting LINAC, delivering 5 mA of deuteron beams at 40MeV (200KW) directed on a C converter+ Uranium target and producing therefore more 1013 fissions/s. The expected radioactive beams intensities in the mass range from A=60 to A=140, will surpass by two order of magnitude any existing facilities in the world. These unstable atoms will be available at energies between few KeV/n to 15 MeV/n. The same driver will accelerate high intensity (10?A to 1 mA), heavier ions (Ar up to Xe) at maximum energy of 14 MeV/n. Under the 7FP program of European Union called *Preparatory phase*, the SPIRAL2 project has been granted a budget of about 4M to build up an international consortium around this new venture. The scientific pillars of the future facility, the status of the construction of SPIRAL2 accelerator and associated physics instruments in collaboration with EU and International partners will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; A new LINAG accelerator is developed for production of high intensity deuteron beam for the SPIRAL2 project. It will also deliver unprecedented high intensity stable beams that can be used for direct reactions on a target. The Super Separator Spectrometer (S3) is designed to open with these beams new horizons for the physics of rare nuclei and low production cross-section nuclei at the extreme limits of the nuclear chart. The S3 focal-plane detection is one of the major equipments in this framework. A research and development program has been launched in order to get the best setup according to the three main physics cases: Synthesis of new Super Heavy Elements, Spectroscopy of Very and Super Heavy Elements and Spectroscopy of neutron-deficient nuclei around 100Sn.

Abstract

International audience; Super-Heavy Elements (SHE) are synthesized by fusion reactions between heavy ions. Unfortunately, the fusion of very heavy systems is experimentally known to be strongly hindered, though the mechanism is not clearly understood yet. We have studied mainly the mechanism by numerical calculations, but recently have started the study with analytical method, which is supposed to clarify dynamical aspects of the physical mechanism. From where the hindrance comes, what the mechanism is, and to where the results are developed are briefly presented in the present talk.

International audience; The characteristics of the new N = 16 shell gap at the neutron drip-line can be deduced from the neutron excitations of 24O. An experiment was carried out to investigate the unbound excited states of 24O using the proton elastic and inelastic proton scattering. It was performed in the BigRIPS line and combines the unique intensities of the RIBF 24O beam with the state-of-the-art particle detector array MUST2. The method is explained.

International audience; The DESIR collaboration proposes the construction of a low-energy beam facility at GANIL-SPIRAL2 to study the properties of exotic nuclei in unexplored regions of the nuclide chart. Beam preparation devices including gas catchers, radiofrequency quadrupoles, high resolution separators and ion traps are under construction in order to provide high quality beams to the users. The DESIR Physics program addresses by means of complementary experimental techniques most of the current interrogations regarding the structure of exotic nuclei, the fundamental interactions driving their properties, as well as their formation in the universe.
