Abstract

Virtual meeting; International audience; The dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere is controlled by the complex interplay of the planet's fast rotation, its solar-wind interaction and its main plasma source at the Io torus. At the ionospheric level, these MIT coupling processes can be characterized by a set of key parameters which include ionospheric conductances, currents and electric fields, exchanges of particles along field lines and auroral emissions. Knowledge of these key parameters in turn makes it possible to estimate the net deposition/extraction of momentum and energy into/out of the Jovian upper atmosphere. In this talk we will extend to the first thirty Juno science orbits the method described in Wang et al. (JGR 2021, under review) which combines Juno multi-instrument data (MAG, JADE, JEDI, UVS, JIRAM and WAVES), adequate modelling tools and data bases to retrieve these key parameters along the Juno magnetic footprint and across the north and south auroral ovals. We will present preliminary distributions of conductances, electric currents and electric fields obtained from these orbits and will compare them with model predictions.

International audience; SPICAM is entering his 8th Martian yeararound Mars and continues to collect measurementswith its infrared channel. This dataset is uniqueinsofar as it comes from the same calibratedinstrument, continuously over the course of 14 years.Hence, it allows to probe different physicalphenomena with multi-annual and seasonal timescale,as well as episodic events (e.g dust storms). SPICAMcontributed to the improvement of the understandingof Mars’s climate in several areas including loweratmosphere composition, chemical processes and thestructure of the atmosphere.

Abstract

International audience; We analyze the ultraviolet nightglow in the atmosphere of Mars through nitric oxide (NO) δ and γ band emissions as observed by the Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph (IUVS) instrument onboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft when it is at apoapse and periapse.In the dayside thermosphere of Mars, solar extreme-ultraviolet radiation dissociates CO2 and N2 molecules. O(3P) and N(4S) atoms are carried from the dayside to the nightside by the day-night hemispheric transport process, where they descend through the nightside mesosphere and can radiatively recombine to form NO(C2Π). The excited molecules rapidly relax by emitting photons in the UV δ and γ bands. These emissions are indicators of the N and O atom fluxes from the dayside to Mars’ nightside and the descending circulation pattern from the nightside thermosphere to the mesosphere (e.g. Bertaux et al., 2005 ; Bougher et al., 1990 ; Cox et al., 2008 ; Gagné et al., 2013 ; Gérard et al., 2008 ; Stiepen et al., 2015, 2017).Observations of these emissions are gathered from a large dataset spanning different seasonal conditions.We present discussion on the variability in the brightness and altitude of the emission with season, geographical position (longitude), and local time, along with possible interpretation by local and global changes in the mesosphere dynamics. We show the possible impact of atmospheric waves forcing longitudinal variability and data-to-model comparisons indicating a wave-3 structure in Mars’ nightside mesosphere. Quantitative comparison with calculations of the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique-Mars Global Climate Model (LMD-MGCM) suggests the model reproduces both the global trend of NO nightglow emission and its seasonal variation. However, it also indicates large discrepancies, with the emission up to a factor 50 times fainter in the model, suggesting that the predicted transport is too efficient toward the night winter pole in the thermosphere by ˜20° latitude to the north.These questions are now addressed through an extensive dataset of disk images, in complement to improved simulations of the LMD-MGCM and the Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (MGITM) models.

We show the possible impact of atmospheric waves structuring the emission longitudinally and indicating a wave-3 structure in Mars’ nightside mesosphere. Abstract

International audience; The SPICAM experiment onboard Mars Express has accumulated over the last decade a wealth of observations that has permitted a detailed characterization of the atmospheric composition and activity from the near-surface to above the exosphere. SPICAM is dual ultraviolet (110 to 320 nm)-infrared (1 to 1.7 µm) spectrometer specifically designed to retrieve the major and minor species abundances of the Martian atmosphere [1]. SPICAM has the distinct capability of observing with a variety of geometrical configurations; monitoring the column-integrated abundances of ozone, water vapor as well as aerosols in a nadir-looking mode, characterizing their vertical distribution in either stellar or solar occultation modes so as to constrain their presence above typically 10 km up to 140 km of altitude (for CO 2) [2,3,4]. In a dedicated limb staring mode, SPICAM can infer the density of hydrogen atoms from 200 up to 10 000 km of altitude while using the resonantly scattered solar photons at the Lyman-alpha emission line of Hydrogen [5,6].Since the beginning of its operations at Mars, SPICAM has performed several thousands of stellar and solar occultations and has provided a multi-annual tracking in nadir mode. Here, we present a synthesis of the observations collected to date in order to assemble a single, coherent picture of the Martian atmosphere specifically adressing the issue of water decomposition into its lighter component (hydrogen) that can escape to space. In doing so, we propose a different angle for the long-term evolution of water and hydrogen on Mars.

Abstract

International audience; The NOMAD spectrometer suite on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter will map the composition and distribution of Mars' atmospheric trace species in unprecedented detail, fulfilling many of the scientific objectives of the joint ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter mission. The instrument is a combination of three channels, covering a spectral range from the UV to the IR, and can perform solar occultation, nadir and limb observations. In this paper, we present the science objectives of the instrument and how these objectives have influenced the design of the channels. We also discuss the expected performance of the instrument in terms of coverage and detection sensitivity.

Abstract

International audience; O(aDelta) and recently discovered OH Meinel nightglow emissions have been observed at the limb with the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-M) instrument on board the Venus Express satellite. Hydroxyl bands belonging to Deltav=1 sequence between 2.60and3.14mum and to Deltav=2 sequence at 1.40-1.46mum have been unambiguously identified. In this study, we analyze the statistical distribution of the Deltav=1 OH Meinel band sequence and the aDeltag-XSigma (0-0) band of the O Infrared Atmospheric bands at 1.27 mum. We also present an analysis of the correlation between the two emissions. From a statistical point of view, we find that the limb intensity of both emissions reach their maximum value near the antisolar point, while they are significantly dimmer in the vicinity of the terminator. The average altitude of the limb emissions peaks are 95.3 ± 3 km and 96 ± 2.7 km, respectively for the OH Deltav=1 sequence and O(aDelta) emissions. The average intensities are 0.41 ± 0.37 MR and 28 ± 22 MR, respectively, corresponding to a mean ratio of about 70. The altitude of the OH nightglow layer is closely related to that of the O(aDelta) emission and some level of co-variation of the maximum intensity along the line of sight is observed. It is suggested that the global subsolar to antisolar circulation plays a key in the control of both airglows by carrying oxygen atoms from the day to the night side of the planet. The O atoms recombine to produce O(aDelta) molecules and they also act as precursors of ozone whose reaction with H produces excited hydroxyl.

Abstract

International audience; The full set of VIRTIS-M limb observations of the OH Venus nightglow has been analyzed to determine its characteristics. Based on 3328 limb profiles, we find that the mean peak intensity along the line of sight of the OH(Deltav = 1 sequence) is 0.35-0.21+0.53 MR and is located at 96.4 ± 5 km. The emission is highly variable and no dependence of the airglow layer altitude versus the antisolar angle is observed. The peak brightness appears to decrease away from the antisolar point even if the variability at a given location is very strong. Some correlation between the intensity of the OH and the O2(a1Delta) emissions is also observed, presumably because atomic oxygen is a common precursor to the formation of O2(a1Delta) and O3, whose reaction with H produces excited OH. Comparing our results with predictions from a photochemical model, a constant H flux does not match the simultaneous OH and O2 airglow observations.

Abstract

International audience; While the terrestrial aurorae are known to be driven primarily by the interaction of the Earth's magnetosphere with the solar wind, there is considerable evidence that auroral emissions on Jupiter and Saturn are driven primarily by internal processes, with the main energy source being the planets' rapid rotation. Prior observations have suggested there might be some influence of the solar wind on Jupiter's aurorae and indicated that auroral storms on Saturn can occur at times of solar wind pressure increases. To investigate in detail the dependence of auroral processes on solar wind conditions, a large campaign of observations of these planets has been undertaken using the Hubble Space Telescope, in association with measurements from planetary spacecraft and solar wind conditions both propagated from 1 AU and measured near each planet. The data indicate a brightening of both the auroral emissions and Saturn kilometric radiation at Saturn close in time to the arrival of solar wind shocks and pressure increases, consistent with a direct physical relationship between Saturnian auroral processes and solar wind conditions. At Jupiter the correlation is less strong, with increases in total auroral power seen near the arrival of solar wind forward shocks but little increase observed near reverse shocks. In addition, auroral dawn storms have been observed when there was little change in solar wind conditions. The data are consistent with some solar wind influence on some Jovian auroral processes, while the auroral activity also varies independently of the solar wind. This extensive data set will serve to constrain theoretical models for the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn.

Abstract

International audience; Spatially resolved spectra of the NO δ and γ ultraviolet bands have been obtained from 80 to 130 km on the Venus night side with the SPICAV instrument on board Venus Express. This NO airglow emission results from radiative recombination of oxygen and nitrogen atoms created on the dayside and transported by the subsolar to antisolar global circulation. Spectral images of the O2 (1 ∆g ) at 1.27 µm have also been made with the VIRTIS-M instrument both at nadir and at the limb. The O2 (1 ∆g ) emission is produced by three-body recombination of O atoms giving rise to an airglow layer near 96 km. The brightness of both emissions changes by over an order of magnitude. They also show variations in the altitude of the peak emission, with larger variability of the NO airglow. The characteristics of both airglows and their implications on global circulation and vertical transport on the nightside will be discussed. Concurrent observations of both limb airglows will be described. It will be shown that limb observations of the vertical and latitudinal distribution of the 1.27 µm emission make it possible to remotely determine the density of atomic oxygen in the upper mesosphere and improve current atmospheric models. One-dimensional models of the O and N distributions will be presented and global properties of the 1-D parameterization of turbulent transport will be discussed.
