Much of our understanding of the drought response strategies of woody plants has been based on the study of either plant hydraulics or leaf water status dynamics or stomatal behavior, while the interaction of these components is less often studied.AimsTo examine the relatedness of leaf tissue osmotic and elastic properties to the isohydry–anisohydry syndrome in adult trees of five co-occurring broadleaf tree species (Acer pseudoplatanus L., Carpinus betulus L., Fagus sylvatica L., Fraxinus excelsior L., and Tilia cordata Mill.), which differ in the stringency of stomatal regulation.MethodsAdult trees of the five species were accessed with a mobile canopy lift and pressure–volume (p-v) curves of sun leaf tissue analyzed for species differences and seasonal change in p-v curve parameters. The extent of seasonal fluctuation in daily leaf water potential (Ψl) minima served to position the species along the isohydry-anisohydry continuum.ResultsThe five species differed greatly in the bulk modulus of elasticity (ε) (12 MPa to 33 MPa) and, to a lesser extent, in leaf water potential at turgor loss (πtlp) (− 2.3 MPa to − 2.9 MPa), exhibiting species-specific combinations of p-v parameters with the extent of Ψl fluctuation. However, πtlp and ε were only weakly, or not at all, related to the species’ position along the isohydry–anisohydry continuum. Anisohydric Fagus sylvatica with high ε and relatively low πtlp had a more drought-sensitive radial growth than the fairly isohydric Tilia cordata with low ε and relatively high πtlp.ConclusionThe five coexisting tree species exhibit largely different drought response strategies, which are partly determined by species differences in leaf tissue elasticity and the stringency of stomatal regulation.

Selection at generation turnover therefore supports the future recovery of ash forests.ContextThe introduced invasive pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (T. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz, and Hosoya cause extensive damage on European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.). Heritable variation in susceptibility to ash dieback has been observed among ash trees in natural and planted populations, but it is not clear how variation in susceptibility influences reproductive fitness.AimsWe hypothesize that healthier male and female trees contribute more gametes to the following generation compared to unhealthy ones.MethodsWe tested the hypothesis by studying gender, seed production, and paternal success in a clonal field trial with 39 replicated clones. In the trial, the susceptibility level of each clone has been recorded in terms of percent crown damage since 2007. We used a linear regression model to explore the relationship between susceptibility and reproductive success (female and male).ResultsThe clones revealed a clear gender dimorphism with an approximate 2:2:1 male/female/hermaphrodite ratio. Females with low levels of crown damage produced substantially more seeds compared to highly damaged females. The male clone with the lowest level of susceptibility was the most effective pollen donor, but highly susceptible males also sired some offspring.ConclusionThe results overall represent good news for the potential recovery of ash forests: selection against most susceptible genotypes at generation turnover is expected to facilitate building up disease resistance in ash populations.

International audience; In order to investigate their potential contribution to ruminant diets, the nutritive value of the leaves of five tree species was evaluated across the seasons. The sampling campaign was conducted on a French network of agroforestry paddocks implemented 25 years ago located in the north, the centre and the south of France. Tree leaves were collected on ash (Fraxinus excelsior), service tree (Sorbus domestica), sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus), walnut (Juglans × regia × nigra) and wild cherry (Prunus avium). The nutritive value of the collected leaves was evaluated in June, August and October 2016 by analysing their protein and fibre contents and in vitro digestibility. Tree leaves composition exhibited large variations between species and between seasons. From spring to autumn, average DM varied from 288 to 450 g kg -1 , fibre content from 383 to 338 g kg -1 m and crude protein content from 160 to 110 g kg -1 . On the contrary, in vitro digestibility remained quite constant across the seasons (from 67.7 to 66.9%). This result contrasts with what is observed on grasses and herbaceous legumes in which in vitro digestibility decreases in autumn.

International audience; In this paper, our objective was to study the consistency of the mineral composition of leaves from Fraxinus excelsior L. according to their provenance and management, i.e. pollarded vs. high stem trees. The leaves were collected in August 2016 on 7 sites spread out in 3 regions of France. The concentrations in Ca, Na, Fe, Mn and Cu of ash tree leaves, exhibited a high variability (coefficient of variation, C.V.>30%), while the concentrations in N, K, Mg, P, and Zn varied in a lesser extent (C.V.

International audience; Thermal modification processes have been developed to increase the biological durability and dimensional stability of wood. The aim of this paper was to study the influence of ThermoWood® treatment intensity on improvement of wood decay resistance against soil-inhabiting micro-organisms, brown/white rots and termite exposures. All of the tests were carried out in the laboratory with two different complementary research materials. The main research material consisted of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) wood thermally modified at temperatures of 170, 200, 215 and 228 °C. The reference materials were untreated ash and beech wood for decay resistance tests, untreated ash wood for soil bed tests and untreated ash, beech and pine wood for termite resistance tests. An agar block test was used to determine the resistance to two brown-rot and two white-rot fungi according to CEN/TS 15083-1 directives. Durability against soil-inhabiting micro-organisms was determined following the CEN/TS 15083-2 directives, by measuring the weight loss, modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) after incubation periods of 24, 32 and 90 weeks. Finally, Reticulitermes santonensis species was used for determining the termite attack resistance by non-choice screening tests, with a size sample adjustment according to EN 117 standard directives on control samples and on samples which have previously been exposed to soil bed test. Thermal modification increased the biological durability of all samples. However, high thermal modification temperature above 215 °C, represented by a wood mass loss (ML%) due to thermal degradation of 20%, was needed to reach resistance against decay comparable with the durability classes of ‘‘durable’’ or ‘‘very durable’’ in the soil bed test. The brown-rot and white-rot tests gave slightly better durability classes than the soil bed test. Whatever the heat treatment conditions are, thermally modified ash wood was not efficient against termite attack neither before nor after soft rot degradation.

Extractives are present in much larger amounts in knotwood than in heartwood in the 12 tested hardwood and softwood species. The chemical identity of the extractives varies largely among species, lignans being only present in softwood species. Extractives from knotwood may constitute an important source of new chemicals and remain still poorly known. The content of extractives (and particularly lignans) in knots was compared to that of heartwood in a number of different European softwood and hardwood species. Twelve species characteristic of European forests were sampled. Extractions were carried out with four solvents of increasing polarity (dichloromethane, acetone, toluene/ethanol and water). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the identification of the compounds present in acetone extracts which are expected to contain lignans. In all tested species, knotwood presented larger contents of extractives than heartwood. The main compounds were lignans, stilbenes and flavonoids, lignans being present only in softwood species. With the exception of oak, knotwood in softwood species contain larger amounts of extractives than that in hardwood species. The chemical nature of extractives present in knotwood varies with species. Their amount is generally much higher in softwood than heartwood species.

Ce rapport d’activité présente les actions entreprises en 2014 par Irstea, l'INRA, l'ONF et le CNPF dans le cadre de l'évaluation des variétés issues des vergers à graines de l'Etat. Elles concernent six espèces : Douglas, mélèzes, pin laricio, épicéa commun, merisier et frêne.

Le frêne est une espèce importante dans divers habitats comme la forêt, les ripisylves et les zones urbaines. L’introduction d’un agent pathogène d’origine asiatique est aujourd’hui responsable de forts taux de dépérissement et mortalité du frêne commun en Europe. La maladie nommé Chalarose est causée par le champignon invasif Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus. En France, détecté en 2008, le pathogène est présent dans tout le quart nord-est et progresse vers l’ouest. Il se disperse par l’air et le transport de plants infectés. Des suivis pluriannuels indiquent qu’un impact majeur de la maladie est à prévoir sur la frênaie et qu’une faible proportion d’arbres est tolérante. Mais la mise en évidence d’une variabilité génétique pour la résistance avec héritabilité élevée permet d’envisager la survie de l’espèce., Ash is a very common species in Europe in various sites as forests, riparian ecosystems, hedges, gardens and urban areas along roads and streets. Since the early 1990s, a new emerging lethal disease has reached epidemic levels on ash in Central Europe. This ash decline is induced by an introduced fungus Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus that is originated from Asia. There has been an invasive spread of the disease from east to west in Europe over the last decade. This quick spread is due to aerial dispersal of ascospores (short distance spread) and transport of latently infected plants (long distance spread).The disease could be caused significant economic and environmental damages. Nevertheless, the presence of additive genetic variation in susceptibility of natural F. excelsior populations provides prospects of future maintenance of the species.

La renaturation des cours d’eau passe par des programmes de production, de transport et de plantation d’écotypes de frêne, de saule et d’aulne. Ces activités nécessitent, à chaque étape, une grande vigilance pour éviter l’installation et le développement de problèmes phytosanitaires. Ce chapitre fait le point sur les principales maladies qui touchent ces trois essences, dresse un bilan des risques d’introduction d’agents pathogènes dus à l’action de l’homme en bordure de rivières et cite en exemple deux maladies létales émergentes en Europe sur le frêne commun et l’aulne glutineux. Enfin, les questions de fréquence et de niveau de résistance putative chez l’aulne envers l’agent pathogène Phytophthora alni dans les populations sauvages seront abordées. Estimer la part de résistance disponible chez l’aulne est un élément clé pour prédire l’avenir de l’espèce dans les ripisylves., Riverbank restoration involves several stages, including plant production in nurseries, transport and the plantation of woody ecotypes (alder, ash and willow). Great care is required in all these activities in order to prevent pathogen establishment and development. This chapter focuses on the major diseases affecting these tree species, assesses the risk of pathogen introduction as a result of human activity on riverbanks and reports on two lethal emerging diseases affecting common ash and black alder in Europe. It also discusses putative resistance to the pathogen Phytophthora alni in natural alder stands (resistance evaluation method, frequency and levels of resistance). Estimating available resistance in Alnus glutinosa is a key element in predicting the future of the species in riparian forests.

In France, research on ash dieback has begun in 2008 further to the first report of Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus in northeastern France. Then, the disease has quickly spread throughout the north of the country and has reached the north-west coast (Normandy) in 2012. The disease is now well established as severe dieback of Fraxinus excelsior and mortality has been observed in the north-east where the pathogen was firstly detected. We worked on the epidemiology of the disease, in particular on pathogenicity and genetic characterization in order to show that H. pseudoalbidus is an invasive pathogen. Our recent researches are focused on environmental factors affecting disease prevalence, impact of the pathogen on host population demography and dispersal ability using real-time PCR assays. From a breeding point of view, INRA aims at exploring the potential for resistance/tolerance in a network of 17 field trials that were installed between 1985 and 2009. These trials contain F. excelsior provenances from throughout Europe. Most of the material is organised as half-sib progenies thus allowing to access additive genetic variance estimates. A privately owned F. excelsior seed orchard located outside the chalara infested zone will also undergo laboratory assessment for resistance.

Ash decline induced by Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus is an emerging disease that severely affects Fraxinus excelsior stands in Europe. There has been an invasive spread of the disease from east to west in Europe over the last decade. Wood discoloration on infected trunks has been reported, but few data are available on the involvement of H. pseudoalbidus in such symptoms. Transport and trade of ash logs could introduce the pathogen into disease-free areas and therefore accelerate its dissemination. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and severity of H. pseudoalbidus in ash logs in infested areas located in the northeast of France and to clarify the role of secondary pathogens in ash decline. The results showed that prevalence of H. pseudoalbidus on collar lesions was high in the study area. The pathogen was able to produce conidia from infected wood. Thus, export of ash logs could represent a potential risk for spreading the disease. Involvement of Armillaria spp. in the decline process was confirmed, while no Phytophthora-induced collar lesions were found. Studying both disease prevalence and the age of callus tissues surrounding collar lesions in 60 ash stands enabled the origin of the disease in the study area to be determined.

International audience; The deposition of atmospheric elements on and into the bark of 4-year-old Fraxinus excelsior L. was studied. The elemental composition of the suber tissue was established through ICP-MS analysis and the presence of solid mineral particles included in this suber was established and described through SEM-EDX. Fractionation of the suber elements mixture was obtained after ashing at 550 °C through successive water (C fraction) and HNO3 2 M (D fraction) extraction, leading to an insoluble residue mainly composed of the solid mineral particles (E fraction). The triplicated % weight of C, D and E were respectively 34.4 ± 2.7, 64.8 ± 2.7 and 0.8 ± 0.1% of the suber ashes weight. The main component of C was K, of D was Ca. Noticeable amounts of Mg were also observed in D. The E fraction, composed of insoluble particles, was mostly constituted of geogenic products, with elements such as Si, Al, K, Mg, representing primary minerals. E also contained Ca3(PO4)2 and concentrated the main part of Pb and Fe. Moreover, The SEM-EDX analysis evidenced that this fraction also concentrated several types of fly ashes of industrial origin. The study of the distribution between C, D and E was analysed through ICP-MS with respect to their origin. The origin of the elements found in such bark was either geogenic (clay, micas, quartz...), anthropogenic or biogenic (for instance large amounts of solid Ca organic salts having a storage role). As opposed to the E fraction, the C fraction, mainly composed of highly soluble K+ is characteristic of a biological pool of plant origin. In fraction D, the very high amount of Ca++ corresponds to two different origins: biological or acid soluble minerals such as calcite. Furthermore, the D fraction contains the most part of pollutants of anthropic origin such as Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd. As a whole, the fractionation procedure of the suber samples allows to separate elements as a function of their origin but also gives valuable information on distribution and speciation of trace elements.

Thermodesorption coupled to gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (TD-GC–MS) has been investigated to identify volatile degradation products generated during wood heat treatment by mild pyrolysis. For this purpose, wood samples of different softwood and hardwood species have been heat treated under nitrogen for different temperatures comprised between 180 and 230 °C during 15 min in the glass thermal desorption tube of the thermodesorber and the volatile wood degradation products trapped. The trapped products were then thermodesorbed and analysed by GC–MS. Chromatograms of the different samples indicated the formation of different products resulting from degradation of lignin and hemicelluloses. Hardwoods were shown to be more sensitive to thermodegradation than softwoods, for which degradation products appear at slightly higher temperature. The important formation of acetic acid is concomitant with the formation of most of degradation products and at the origin of the difference of reactivity observed between softwoods and hardwoods.

Le changement des pratiques agricoles et surtout pastorales dans les Pyrénées Centrales a entraîné une colonisation des terres par le frêne (Fraxinus excelsior L.) en constituant des peuplements denses et fréquents dans le paysage pyrénéen. Ce travail est centré sur l'étude de la répartition actuelle et future de ces peuplements qu'on appelle « des accrus » et sur leur potentialité de croissance en relation avec les facteurs qui peuvent être limitants dans la perspective d'une valorisation économique de ces accrus. L'étude de la croissance a été réalisée à trois niveaux : la croissance en hauteur en fonction de la fertilité, et la croissance en diamètre en fonction du climat et de la compétition. Pour ce dernier facteur, la croissance a été étudiée sur des peuplements en place (sans intervention) et suites à deux modalités d'éclaircie. La détection des accrus de frêne au stade perchis avec les outils de télédétection n'est pas réalisable et nécessiterait d'importants investissements et adaptations pour devenir utilisables. La présence des accrus de frêne est surtout modulée par la topographie et l'utilisation du sol. En ce qui concerne la croissance en diamètre de ces accrus, elle est modulée par la vigueur des arbres, la compétition et le climat. Ce sont surtout les températures maximales d'avril et les températures minimales de septembre ou d'août qui influencent la croissance en surface de cerne. Le frêne réagit dès la première année à l'éclaircie, d'autant plus fortement et durablement que le peuplement est plus jeune. L'effet de la nutrition minérale sur la classification des accrus étudiés, selon leur croissance en hauteur, n'est pas évident. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus dans ce travail constitue un outil pour aider à gérer les accrus de frêne dans la zone étudiée surtout dans un objectif économique.

International audience; Plant-plant and plant-soil interactions play a key role in determining plant community structure and ecosystem function. However, the effects of global change on the interplay between co-occurring plants and soil microbes in successional communities are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated competition for nitrogen (N) between soil microorganisms, grass plants and establishing tree seedlings under factorial carbon dioxide (CO2) and N treatments. Fruxinus excelsior seedlings were germinated in the presence or absence of grass competition (Dacrylis glomerata) at low (380 mu mol mol(-1)) or high (645 mu mol mol(-1)) CO2 and at two levels of N nutrition in a mesocosm experiment. Pulse N-15 labelling was used to examine N partitioning among plant and soil compartments. Dactylis exerted a strong negative effect on Fraxinus biomass, N capture and N-15 recovery irrespective of N and CO2 treatment. In contrast, the presence of Dactylis had a positive effect on the microbial N pool. Plant and soil responses to N treatment were of a greater magnitude compared with responses to elevated CO2, but the pattern of Fraxinus- and microbial-N pool response to N and CO2 varied depending on grass competition treatment. Within the Dactylis competition treatment, decreases in Fraxinus biomass in response to N were not mirrored by decreases in tree seedling N content, suggesting a shift from below- to above-ground competition. In the Dactylis-sown pots, N-15 recovery could be ranked Dactylis > microbial pool > Fraxinus in all N and CO2 treatment combinations. Inequalities between Fraxinus and soil microorganisms in terms of N-15 recovery were exacerbated by N addition. Contrary to expectations, elevated CO2 did not increase plant-microbe competition. Nevertheless, microbial N-15 recovery showed a small positive increase in the high CO2 treatment. Overall, elevated CO2 and N supply did not interact on plant/soil N partitioning. Our data suggest that the competitive balance between establishing tree seedlings and grass plants in an undisturbed sward is relatively insensitive to CO2 or N-induced modifications in N competition between plant and soil compartments.

International audience; Chalara fraxinea is a fungus currently threatening ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) in several European countries. This emerging pathogen was assigned to the EPPO’s alert list and therefore accurate detection and identification tools are needed. Because of its slow growth rate on agar media and the frequent presence of fast-growing saprotrophic fungi within the host tissue, classical isolation techniques are timeconsuming and sometimes inefficient. In this study, we used species-specific polymorphisms observed within the internal transcribed spacer region to design a primer pair and a dual-labelled probe to be used in a real-time PCR assay for the detection of C. fraxinea. The test proved to be specific, based on in silico and in vitro assessments, and could detect as little as 20 fg of C. fraxinea DNA. A protocol was developed in order to detect the pathogen directly in plant tissue and proved to be more efficient and rapid than isolation on agar plates. This new tool should be useful both for monitoring and to conduct epidemiology research on this emerging pathogen.

International audience; The present study assesses light-induced variations in phenolic compounds in leaves of saplings of two co-occurring temperate species (Acer platanoides L., and Fraxinus excelsior L.) along a light gradient using a new non-invasive optical method (Dualex). The Dualex-derived UV absorbance of leaf epidermis (the sum of the adaxial and abaxial faces, AUV) increased significantly with increasing light in both species. AUV values were correlated with absorbance of the leaf extract at 305 nm and 375 nm (A305 and A375) in both species with similar slopes for both species. However, a large difference in intercept was observed between the two species when A305 was regressed against AUV. Similarly, AUV values were well correlated with the amount of phenolics in the leaf extracts assessed by the Folin–Ciocalteu method, but slopes were significantly different for the two species. Thus, the UV-A epidermal transmittance, despite being a reliable indicator of the UV-screening capacity of the leaf epidermis, cannot be used for any quantitative estimate of UV-B screening capacity or of energetic requirement for leaf construction without a species-specific calibration.

One of the components of shade tolerance resides in the ability of saplings to reduce carbon loss by minimising respiratory and by optimising light interception and photosynthesis. Thus it must exist a compromise between the reduction in respiratory losses, increase in photosynthetic activity and development of their assimilatory area. We were interested more particularly in modulation of the cost associated to leaf area renewal (leaves and various structures necessary to their deployment) and we therefore characterized biochemical (construction cost, biochemical composition) and morphological (specific leaf area, biomass allocation) features which explain the interspecific differences and the plasticity of this cost. The study was done in situ on saplings sampled in a large range of light environments making it possible to characterize the interspecific variability and the plasticity of the cost associated to the leaf area renewal. The species selected were contrasted from the point of view of their temperament, their architecture and their foliar morphology: nine species were selected in temperate forest (Moselle) and three in tropical forest (French Guyane). The light microclimate of each seedling was characterized by a numerical hemispherical photograph. The construction cost of each organ was calculated starting from its carbon content, and corroborated by its heat of combustion (microcalorimetry). We observed a large interspecific variability and a large plasticity of the cost associated to the leaf area renewal. These costs do not reflect the temperament of species but their plasticity shows that the most tolerant species are most plastic. This plasticity is more due to morphologicals changes of the specific leaf area than to biochemical changes., En sous-bois, la capacité des juvéniles installés à diminuer les pertes de carbone par respiration et à augmenter l’interception du rayonnement lumineux constitue une composante à part entière de leur aptitude à tolérer l’ombrage. Il doit donc exister un compromis entre la diminution des pertes respiratoires, l’augmentation de l’activité photosynthétique et le maintien de la surface assimilatrice. En s’intéressant plus particulièrement à la modulation du coût associé au déploiement des surfaces assimilatrices (feuilles et différentes structures nécessaires à leur déploiement) nous avons caractérisé les traits biochimiques (coût de construction, composition) et morphologiques (surface spécifique, allocation de biomasse) qui expliquent les différences interspécifiques et la plasticité de ce coût. Le microclimat lumineux de chaque plant a été caractérisé par une photographie hémisphérique numérique. Le coût de construction de chaque organe a été déterminé à partir de sa teneur en carbone, et corroboré par sa chaleur de combustion (microcalorimétrie). Nous observons une grande variabilité interspécifique et une forte plasticité du coût associé au déploiement de la surface assimilatrice. Ces coûts ne reflètent pas le tempérament des espèces, en revanche, leur plasticité montre que les espèces les plus tolérantes sont les plus plastiques. Cette plasticité est plus due à des modifications morphologiques de la surface spécifique des feuilles qu’à des modifications de leur contenu biochimiques.

Diplôme : other; Depuis plusieurs décennies, les changements dans les modes d’utilisation des terres sont à l’origine d’une évolution importante des paysages pastoraux des zones de montagne, entraînant parfois leur fermeture par le boisement spontané de terres en déprise agricole. Ainsi, le frêne (Fraxinus excelsior L.), espèce autrefois largement utilisée dans les systèmes agro-pastoraux traditionnels de montagne, est devenu une espèce colonisatrice des prairies permanentes dans la zone périphérique du Parc National des Pyrénées (PNP). L’objectif de ce travail est d’étudier l’importance des différents facteurs jouant sur les trois processus fondamentaux de la colonisation (arrivée, établissement et expansion) ; et d’en évaluer l’impact sur la biodiversité. Pour notre étude, nous nous sommes intéressés au territoire agricole d’une commune des Hautes Pyrénées faisant partie de la zone périphérique du PNP. Le rôle des pratiques agricoles dans la colonisation a été analysé à partir d’une étude comparative de la composition botanique d’un ensemble de parcelles différentes par leur utilisation actuelle et passée, ainsi que par leur degré de colonisation par le frêne. Le rôle du paysage dans le processus d’arrivée du frêne dans les prairies a été abordé à partir de différents scénarios de pluie de graines basés sur la cartographie des semenciers potentiels. L’établissement du frêne dans les prairies (germination et survie des plantules), a été abordé par une approche expérimentale in situ qui nous a permis de suivre l’évolution de graines de frêne semées dans trois états différents de végétation (sol nu, végétation rase, accumulation de biomasse). L’expansion spatio-temporelle du frêne, entre 1948 et 2001, sur la commune a été établie à l’aide de photographies aériennes. L’impact sur la biodiversité, a été évalué à partir des modifications survenues dans la composition taxonomique et fonctionnelle de la communauté de carabes (Carabidae, Coléoptères) le long d’un gradient de colonisation. La fauche ainsi qu’un pâturage intensif agissent directement sur les plantules de frêne en les détruisant chaque année (deux coupes sont nécessaires pour supprimer une plantule). L’abandon d’une prairie ou le passage de la pression de pâturage au dessous d’un seuil d’intensité, mis en évidence dans ce travail, facilite indirectement le processus d’établissement à travers la présence de zones d’accumulation d’herbe favorables à la germination et à la survie des plantules. Mais ces modifications des pratiques ne suffisent pas pour qu’il y ait établissement. Ce sont également l’omniprésence du frêne dans le paysage et la particularité de ses différents traits de vie (forte production de graines, dispersion à longue distance, développement d’une croissance compensatoire et d’une reproduction végétative) qui en font une espèce colonisatrice des prairies. Concernant l’impact sur la biodiversité, la composition de la communauté des carabes est profondément et rapidement modifiée le long du gradient de colonisation. Les prairies non colonisées sont très riches en espèces (29/45) alors que les plus vieux peuplements forestiers de frênes sont pauvres (9/45). Cependant, cette colonisation n’est pas totalement négative. Certes, elle est défavorable à la plupart des espèces prairiales mais les jeunes peuplements forestiers de frênes abritent un ensemble d’espèces forestières qui leur sont spécifiques.L’ensemble des résultats obtenus dans ce travail constitue une base de réflexion pour envisager différentes hypothèses de gestion future des boisements spontanés de frênes dans la commune étudiée et plus largement dans la zone périphérique du Parc National des Pyrénées.

Background The structure and evolution of hybrid zones depend mainly on the relative importance of dispersal and local adaptation, and on the strength of assortative mating. Here, we study the influence of dispersal, temporal isolation, variability in phenotypic traits and parasite attacks on the male mating success of two parental species and hybrids by real-time pollen flow analysis. We focus on a hybrid zone population between the two closely related ash species Fraxinus excelsior L. (common ash) and F. angustifolia Vahl (narrow-leaved ash), which is composed of individuals of the two species and several hybrid types. This population is structured by flowering time: the F. excelsior individuals flower later than the F. angustifolia individuals, and the hybrid types flower in-between. Hybrids are scattered throughout the population, suggesting favorable conditions for their local adaptation. We estimate jointly the best-fitting dispersal kernel, the differences in male fecundity due to variation in phenotypic traits and level of parasite attack, and the strength of assortative mating due to differences in flowering phenology. In addition, we assess the effect of accounting for genotyping error on these estimations. Results We detected a very high pollen immigration rate and a fat-tailed dispersal kernel, counter-balanced by slight phenological assortative mating and short-distance pollen dispersal. Early intermediate flowering hybrids, which had the highest male mating success, showed optimal sex allocation and increased selfing rates. We detected asymmetry of gene flow, with early flowering trees participating more as pollen donors than late flowering trees. Conclusion This study provides striking evidence that long-distance gene flow alone is not sufficient to counter-act the effects of assortative mating and selfing. Phenological assortative mating and short-distance dispersal can create temporal and spatial structuring that appears to maintain this hybrid population. The asymmetry of gene flow, with higher fertility and increased selfing, can potentially confer a selective advantage to early flowering hybrids in the zone. In the event of climate change, hybridization may provide a means for F. angustifolia to further extend its range at the expense of F. excelsior.

International audience; Browsing by mammalian herbivores may help regulate the balance between woody and herbaceous vegetation where agricultural land has been abandoned. Until now, the potential of controlled grazing as a research tool has not yet been fully utilized. In this study, we used an enclosure-based experiment to assess the impact of browsing by red deer on the fate of seedlings on a woodland edge. Species, size, number of lateral shoots, and relative location of seedlings were recorded in 1 m2 plots (n = 57) distributed among four vegetation types. From autumn 2000 to winter 2002, after the stay of three tame hinds in the enclosure for 5-day periods in each season (a year-round deer density of 15 hinds/km2), we checked for loss or browsing damage of seedlings. From autumn 2000 to summer 2001, we additionally recorded the diurnal time spent feeding by the hinds during days 1, 3, and 5, and we simulated their food intake by hand during days 2 and 4. Mortality rates for willow Salix caprea and ash Fraxinus excelsior was higher than for silver fir Abies alba seedlings. Losses due to dehydration, which peaked under coniferous, were counterbalanced by growth of new seedlings. Loss due to browsing was uncommon. Deer impact on coniferous seedlings was insignificant all year long. More broad-leaved seedlings were browsed in spring and summer than in winter. Leader browsing increased with height, most of the taller seedlings occuring in herbaceous vegetation, especially wild cherry Prunus avium. Previously damaged seedlings suffered significantly higher leader browsing than previously undamaged ones. Behavioural observations showed that old pasture was selected by foraging deer all year-round. In autumn, spring and summer, due to quick depletion, the relative contribution of seedlings to the total food intake peaked during day 1, most (>75%) concerning wild cherry. Our results suggest that deer browsing on woody seedlings has more to do with species preference, height structure, growth, and seasonal phenology of seedlings than with induced mortality. Choice of previously damaged seedlings and non-random habitat use by deer can prove useful by minimizing natural regeneration of seedlings close to pastures. Further work is required on long term controlled browsing experiments to better understand natural regeneration of mixed woodland species.; L'abroutissement par les herbivores peut permettre le maintien de milieux ouverts après l'abandon de l'agriculture. Jusqu'à présent, cette possibilité d'utiliser un paturage contrôlé n'a pas été recherché complètement. Dans cette étude, nous avons réalisé une expérimentation dans un enclos pour mesurer l'impact de l'abroutissement du cerf sur une régénération forestière. La nature des essences, leur hauteur, le nombre de pousses et leur localisation ont été inventoriées sur des placettes d'1 m2 (n=57). Suite au passage de 4 biches imprégnées pendant 5 jours consécutifs à chaque saison (correspondant à une densité relative à l'année de 15 biches/km2)entre l'automne 2000 et l'hiver 2002, les inventaires ont permis de suivre la mortalité des semis et la pression d'abroutissement. Entre l'automne 2000 et l'été 2001, le temps passé à se nourrir dans la journée par les biches a été évalué (pour les jours 1,3 et 5) de même que la quantité ingérée a été estimée les jours 2 et 4. La mortalité des semis est plus importante pour le saule Salix caprea et le frêne Fraxinus excelsior que pour le sapin pectiné Abies alba. Les pertes dues à la sécheresse importante des semis sous les résineux étaient compensées par le développement de nouveaux semis. Les pertes dues à l'abroutissement sont négligeables. L'impact du cerf sur la régénération des résineux est négligeable tout au long de l'année. Les semis d'essences feuillues sont consommées essentiellement au printemps et en été. L'abroutissement de la pousse terminale des feuillus est corrélée à leur hauteur notamment pour les semis de merisier. les semis auparavant consommés sont plus sujets à être abroutis que ceux qui ne l'ont jamais été. Les observations directes ont montré que la partie de l'enclos correspondant à une ancienne pâture était plus utilisée par les biches tout au long de l'année. A l'automne, au printemps et en été la contribution relative des semis d'essences forestières à la quantité de nourriture ingérée passait par un pic (>75%)puis diminuait fortement après la première journée passée dans l'enclos en raison d'une forte diminution du stock disponible notamment de semis de merisiers. Nos résultats suggèrent que les effets de l'abroutissement du cerf sur l'acquisition de la régénération sont peu importants et que le problème principal est lié à la nature des essences et à leur relative attractivité, leur hauteur, la saison. Pour limiter l'impact du cerf en raison de l'utilisation de son habitat, il peut s'avérer utile de ne pas mettre en régénération des zones limitrophes de patures. Des travaux complémentaires au travers d'expérimentations de ce type sur le long terme pourront permettre de mieux comprendre les interactions entre le cerf et l'acquisition des régénérations forestières.

The contribution of both biochemical (tissue construction cost, CC) and morphological traits (biomass partitioning and leaf mass per unit area, LMA) to the cost associated with leaf area renewal (construction cost of the leafy shoot per unit leaf area, shoot CCA) was studied in saplings of Acer platanoides L. and Fraxinus excelsior L. growing in a natural light gradient below forest canopy. Decrease in LMA with shade and change in biomass partitioning from stems towards leaves and petioles accounted for the strong decrease in mass per unit area of the leafy shoot (SMA) with shade and for most of the plasticity of shoot CCA in both species. In addition, a decrease in leaf CC in A. platanoides also contributed to the overall decrease of shoot CCA with shade in this species. Leaf CC was positively correlated with LMA in F. excelsior, positively correlated with both LMA and epidermal absorbance of UV (AUV) in A. platanoides. Leaf CC was negatively correlated with ash content in both species. International audience; Le Hêtre est considéré comme une essence tolérante à l'ombrage, au moins dans son jeune âge. Il est néanmoins capable de tirer profit rapidement de trouées dans les couverts pour présenter une remarquable accélération de sa croissance. Dans cet article, nous comparons les traits fonctionnels liés à la photosynthèse et à l'interception de lumière, de semis de Hêtre cultivés sous différents niveaux de lumière à ceux d'essences accompagnatrices. Nous montrons qu'aucun de ces traits pris séparément ne suffit à caractériser le niveau de tolérance à l'ombrage de ces essences. Par contre, il semble que, pour permettre la survie des individus sous faible lumière, il soit indispensable que le bilan annuel de carbone à l'échelle de ces individus (en incluant les pertes par respiration de tous les organes) soit positif. Des traits composites comme le rapport entre la surface foliaire et la biomasse totale, ou mieux encore comme l'efficacité d'interception de la lumière par unité de biomasse peuvent, sous un éclairement donné, être des indicateurs de ce bilan et donc du degré de tolérance à l'ombre. Ces deux indicateurs diminuent cependant avec les dimensions des plants, et ce d'autant plus rapidement que la croissance est active. Dans ces conditions, une croissance lente est en soi une caractéristique de tolérance à l'ombrage. Dans cet article, nous développons cette idée et la confrontons à un ensemble de données issues de nos expériences.

About 5% of forest area of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) is covered by mixed ash stands. In most cases, these are secondary forest established on former pastures and grasslands in the last fifty years and they constitute an important resource from an economic point of view. This paper presents allometric equations describing tree size-shape relationships for ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and wych elm (Ulmus glabra Hudson). Diameter at breast height explained most of the variability of the dependent variables (total stem volume, total aboveground, stem, branches and leaves biomass). Wood density variations with stem height and leaf area index (LAI) were also investigated., Biomasse aérienne chez des peuplements mélangés de frêne (Fraxinus excelsior L. et Ulmus glabra Hudson) dans les Préalpes de Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italie). Environ 5 % de la surface forestière de Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italie) est constituée de peuplements de frêne en mélange avec d'autres essences. Dans la plupart des cas, ce sont des forêts secondaires installées sur des pâturages et des prairies au cours des cinquante dernières années. Elles constituent une importante ressource économique. Cet article présente les équations allométriques pour l'estimation de la biomasse aérienne pour le frêne (Fraxinus excelsior L.) et pour l'orme de montagne (Ulmus glabra Hudson). Le diamètre à hauteur de poitrine explique la majeure partie de la variabilité des variables suivantes: volume total de la tige, biomasse aérienne totale, biomasse de la tige, biomasse des branches et des feuilles. La variation de la densité de la tige avec la hauteur et l'indice foliaire (LAI) ont aussi été considérés.

International audience; Dendroecological studies began 20 years ago at the Phytoecological Laboratory of the Na- tional Agronomic Research Institute in France (INRA). Large surveys have been carried out in several geographical regions and forests allowing the study of radial growth of individual trees during the past 150 years. This contribution focuses on the analysis of pointer years and summarizes the results ob- tained for 8 species (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Abies alba, Pinus uncinata, Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies) and 12 regions (with an average of 500 analysed trees for each study). This first dataset is supplemented by the data collected on 40 sites and 5 species of the French Permanent Network for the Monitoring of Forest Ecosystems (RENECOFOR – European Network – Level II plots). The frequency and amplitude of pointer years are discussed according to the species and the sampling areas. A multivariate analysis of the sites x pointer years table allows an ordi- nation of species according to their sensitivity to climatic factors. Fagus sylvatica seems to be the most “sensitive” species to inter-annual climatic variations whatever its location and, for the whole sample, regional and species effects are pointed out. The number of pointer years observed in a given stand is strongly correlated with the average site dryness, clearly showing that spatial variations of drought control tree radial growth. We finally analyse the interannual correlation between water stress variations and pointer years

International audience; In this study, we compared the annual biomass increment of ash trees to their annual carbon balance calculated from the end of the growing season in 1994 to the end of the next one in 1995. In 1995, three trees of variable competitive status and aged 25 were studied. Stem, branch and root biomass increments were derived from detailed measurements. Tree crowns were divided vertically into three layers. In each crown layer, the foliage biomass and area were determined, net CO2 assimilation (An) and global radiation (Rg) were measured regularly throughout the growing season. Outside this period, Rg was estimated from global radiation measured above the canopy and from estimations of light transmittance. Net assimilation of trees (AN) was obtained by scaling leaf An to the tree level, using relations established between An and Rg for each crown layer, the distribution of foliage area, and measured climatic data. Above- and below-ground tree respirations, not measured, were estimated. An was correlated to Rg and potential evapotranspiration. It decreased from the upper to the lower crown layers, but was independent of tree competitive status. Total estimated respiration of trees accounted for about 37% of gross assimilation. The proportion of carbon allocated to the stem was more than 45%. Net productivity of trees obtained from simulated annual carbon fluxes compared reasonably well with the biomass increment of trees.; Accroissement en biomasse et bilan de carbone du frêne dans un peuplement expérimental du nord-est de la France. Cette étude avait pour but de comparer l'accroissement annuel en biomasse de frênes à leur bilan de carbone établi par estimation de la photosynthèse et de la respiration sur une année complète (depuis la fin de la saison de végétation 1994 à la fin de celle de 1995). En 1995, trois frênes de différents statuts concurrentiels âgés de 25 ans ont été étudiés. Les accroissements en biomasse de la tige, des branches et des racines ont été obtenus à partir de mesures détaillées. Les houppiers des arbres ont été divisés verticalement en trois strates. Pour chaque strate, les variables suivantes ont été mesurées: la biomasse et la surface foliaires, la photosynthèse et le rayonnement global (Rg) pendant la période de croissance. En dehors de cette période, le rayonnement global a été estimé à partir du rayonnement global hors couvert et de valeurs estimées de la transmittance pour chaque strate. L'assimilation nette des arbres (AN) a été obtenue en extrapolant l'assimilation nette foliaire (An) à partir des relations établies entre An et Rg pour chaque strate du houppier, de la distribution du feuillage par strate et des données climatiques mesurées. La respiration des arbres, non mesurée, a été estimée. L'assimilation nette An est liée à Rg et à l'évapotranspiration potentielle et décroît du haut vers le bas du houppier ; elle est indépendante du statut concurrentiel des arbres. La respiration totale des arbres représente environ 37 % de leur assimilation brute annuelle. La proportion de carbone allouée à la tige représente en 1995 plus de 45 % du carbone total stocké par les arbres. Le bilan de carbone des arbres obtenu par estimation des flux de carbone est en assez bon accord avec leur accroissement en biomasse.

ln 2000 and 2001, we mapped the woody population of the Tillaie biological reserve in the Fontainebleau forest ta follow up the initial map that was established in the summer of 1968 and produce information on population dynamics. International audience; Plant water relationships and hydraulic characteristics were measured for two species of the genus Acer that co-occur with Fraxinus excelsior, but differ in their habitat preference with respect to soil moisture: Acer pseudoplatanus is restricted to wet habitats, whereas Acer opalus occurs on drier sites. The data obtained showed significantly lower hydraulic conductance and lower vulnerability to embolism in the drought-tolerant species, Acer opalus, than in the water prefering species Acer pseudoplatanus. Similar differences in hydraulic conductance and xylem vulnerability to embolism were also found under dry acclimated conditions for Fraxinus excelsior trees, indicating that the hydraulic differences observed might be attributable to the contrasting soil water conditions of the sites. Les résultats obtenus montrent, chez Acer opalus, l'espèce tolérante à la sécheresse, que la conductance hydraulique et la vulnérabilité à la cavitation sont moins fortes que chez Acer pseudoplatanus, l'espèce des zones humides. Des modifications identiques de la conductance hydraulique et de la vulnérabilité à la cavitation s'observent également chez Fraxinus excelsior pour l'espèce acclimatée aux milieux secs, ce qui semble indiquer que ces changements des caractéristiques hydrauliques pourraient être associés aux conditions hydriques des milieux. Cervid populations are rapidly increasing in many part of Western Europe, where they cause damage to forest production. This necessitates a better understanding of what determines their dietary choices. In this experiment, we investigated the relationship between the relative availability of two tree species and diet selection of red deer Cervus elaphus. Three hypotheses were tested: (i) preference for rarity, frequently asserted by foresters, (ii) preference for the more abundant profitable species, as predicted by optimal foraging models, and (iii) frequency-independent selectivity, as already observed in moose and roe deer. Six red deer hinds were therefore observed in short-duration tests when offered two plant species, willow Salix caprea and ash Fraxinus excelsior, in varying proportions. The relation between the relative consumption and availability of the two plant species revealed that red deer prefer ash to willow, and that their short-term selectivity is not a frequency-dependent process. Individual animals differed in the intensity of their preference, but all reacted similarly to variations in the relative availability of the two plant species. Our results advance our understanding of the choices of red deer at the feeding site scale, but further research is needed to propose management practices, which would take advantage of their frequency-independent selectivity., Les populations de Cervidés sont en rapide augmentation en Europe de l'ouest, où elles causent des dégâts à la forêt. Nous avons étudié comment la disponibilité relative de deux espèces d'arbres influence les choix alimentaires du cerf Cervus elaphus en testant trois hypothèses : (i) une sélectivité accrue pour les espèces rares souvent évoquée par les forestiers, (ii) une sélectivité accrue pour l'espèce préférée lorsque son abondance augmente, prédite par les modèles d'optimisation, et (iii) une sélectivité indépendante de la disponibilité relative des espèces végétales comme cela a déjà été montré chez l'élan et le chevreuil. Nous avons pour cela observé les choix alimentaires de six biches dans des tests de courte durée, lorsqu'on faisait varier l'abondance relative du saule Salix caprea par rapport au frêne Fraxinus excelsior. La relation entre la consommation des deux espèces et leur disponibilité relative indique une préférence du cerf pour le frêne par rapport au saule, et à court terme, une sélectivité indépendante de la disponibilité relative des deux espèces. L'intensité de la préférence pour le frêne variait selon les animaux, mais ceux-ci ont réagi de manière identique aux variations d'abondance des deux espèces. Nos résultats éclairent les choix alimentaires du cerf à l'échelle du site alimentaire, mais d'autres travaux seront nécessaires pour appliquer ces résultats de manière à limiter les dégâts forestiers.

International audience; Une illustration de l'intérêt du modèle architectural est proposée par l'analyse d'un profil architectural, effectué dans la réserve rhénane à bois durs de Rhinau (Alsace). Ce profil, choisi pour sa richesse en espèces ligneuses (14) et son architecture spontanée, montre le côtoiement de nombreuses éco-unités de petites dimensions, à différentes phases de développement. Les espèces les plus fréquentes sont le Frêne, qui se trouve surtout dans les éco-unités en phase de croissance. Les éco-unités matures sont dominées par de grands chênes en début de sénescence. Les densités élevées des petits arbres et des buissons, et la canopée ouverte expliquent l'architecture très étagée du profil (3 niveaux de stratification sont reconnus), la grande variabilité des indices foliaires (de 2,1 à 5,3) et du bilan radiatif (de 0,44 à 10,2 moles par mètre carré et par jour). Cette architecture étagée montre une certaine stabilité vis-à-vis des perturbations (inondations, vents). La stabilité de la forêt se manifeste également par la résistance à l'invasion par les plantes exotiques. L'absence du Chêne dans les éco-unités jeunes, notée également par d'autres approches méthodologiques, signe une évolution sylvigénétique vers la frênaie.

National audience; L’évolution de la couleur du bois de chêne sessile (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) due à la photodégradation a été observée au cours d’un cycle de vieillissement de 500 heures à l’aide d’un spectrocolorimètre. Deux phénomènes ont été mis en évidence : dans un premier temps un assombrissement accompagné par un jaunissement intervient, ainsi qu’une augmentation de la saturation de la couleur ; ensuite, commence une seconde phase, caractérisée par une baisse de la saturation, un rougissement et un éclaircissement des bois. Deux produits de stabilisation de l’aspect de surface ont été testés sur le bois de chêne et sur différentes essences de bois clairs (frêne, érable, sapin, charme). Ces produits ne se sont pas montré efficaces pour la stabilisation de la couleur après 500 heures de vieillissement artificiel.

Predicting timber volume can be important for decision-making. Conventional forest growth models are generally based on mensuration data acquired in fully stocked homogeneous tree stands, and do not consider the wide spacings often adopted in European agroforestry. In order to test the possibility of adapting conventional forestry growth models, diameter and height growth were measured on widely spaced trees. Parameters of a Gompertz double exponential function were adjusted for several tree species planted at wide spacings. Spacing, vegetation control, and individual tree shelters affected the parameters. At wide spacings, the asymptote for diameter growth was larger, and the asymptote for height growth smaller, compared to conventional forestry.

Ce dernier a été estimé à partir de la surface de projection au sol du houppier et de l'élongation annuelle courante de la tige. Une relation a été mise en évidence entre le volume foliaire ainsi estimé et l'accroissement de la tige.
