International audience; This paper presents a low-cost measurement method for MIMO antenna performance assessment based on the open-source OpenAirInterface initiative. MISO 8×1 measurements are presented to experimentally prove the reproductibility of the test method, using a prototype with 8 antennas at 2.6 GHz integrated into a 140×140×40mm femto cell. The results shows that measurements are repeatable with a good accuracy. Beamforming performance are presented to finalize the validation of the setup.

International audience; We study the transmit time reversal beamforming in a 8x1 MISO communication system at 2.68GHz. We consider the downlink time reversal transmission where a BS communicates with one user. A prototype composed by 8 antennas and designed by Orange labs acts as the BS while the user has a single antenna. The reciprocity property is destroyed by the non-symmetric characteristics of the RF electronic circuitry. We use relative calibration which is based exclusively on signal processing techniques to solve this issue. Utilizing a controlled test setup based on OpenAirInterface, the ExpressMIMO2 SDR boards, as well as a servo controlled rail, we show the feasibility of a relative calibration method through beamforming SNR measurements. We also evaluate the performance of an antenna selection scheme at the transmit side as a low-cost low-complexity alternative to capture many of the advantages of multi-antenna systems. The measurements show that the relative calibration method is performing almost optimal and that the complexity can be significantly reduced by using antenna selection.

The setup is validated through a beamforming gain measurement in a MISO 4x1 configuration in LTE TDD mode. We achieved the expected 6 dB beamforming gain between a SISO and 4×1 MISO configuration.

Ray tracing (RT) is an accurate propagation prediction tool that has been widely used to simulate channel characteristics in indoor environments. To date, the developed RT tool includes not only specular reflection, penetration through dielectric blocks and diffraction, but also diffuse scattering mechanisms. The accuracy, provided by a detailed modeling of the environment, comes at the cost of a high computational complexity, which directly scales with the number of propagation paths considered. We are interested in simulating the radio propagation conditions for a mobile terminal, communicating in a frame based communication system indoors with several fixed nodes. This communication shall be used to obtain the position of the mobile terminal in indoor scenario. Therefore, the correlated temporal and spatial evolution of the channel impulse response is of utmost concern. In this paper, we propose a method to significantly reduce the computational complexity of RT by using a projection of all propagation paths on a subspace spanned by two-dimensional discrete prolate spheroidal (DPS) sequences. With this method the computational complexity can be reduced by more than one order of magnitude for indoor scenarios. The accuracy of our low-complexity DPS subspace based RT algorithm is verified by numeric simulations.

The advent of new use cases and new applications such as augmented/virtual reality, industrial automation, autonomous vehicles, etc. in 5G has made the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specify Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) as one of the service categories. To support URLLC with the strict requirements of reliability and latency, 3GPP Release 15 and Release 16 have specified the URLLC features in licensed spectrum. The ongoing 3GPP Release 17 extends the URLLC features to unlicensed spectrum to target the new use cases in the industrial scenario. In the first part of the thesis from Chapter 2 to Chapter 4, we focus on the URLLC in licensed spectrum. The first study deals with the problem of ensuring the configured number of uplink (UL) configured-grant (CG) repetitions of a transport block. Secondly, we study the collisions of an eMBB UL transmission of a user equipment (UE) and an URLLC UL transmission of another UE on the CG resources. Thirdly, the focus of this study is the downlink (DL) transmission where the feedback of the DL semi-persistent scheduling transmission is dropped due to the conflict of the DL/UL symbols. In the second part from Chapter 5 to Chapter 8, we focus on URLLC operation in unlicensed spectrum. In unlicensed spectrum, a 5G device is required to access to a channel by using load based equipment (LBE) or frame based equipment (FBE). The uncertainty of obtaining channel access through LBE or FBE can impede the achievement of the URLLC latency requirements. Therefore, the study of impact of LBE and FBE on URLLC transmission and the enhancements of LBE and FBE are needed.; L'émergence de nouveaux cas et d’applications tels que la réalité virtuelle/augmentée, l'automatisation industrielle, les véhicules autonomes, etc. en 5G fait définir au Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) comme un des trois services. Pour soutenir URLLC avec des exigences strictes de la fiabilité et de la latence, 3GPP Release 15 et 16 ont standardisé des fonctionnalités d’URLLC dans le spectre sous licence. Release 17 en cours agrandit des fonctionnalités d’URLLC au spectre sans licence pour cibler des nouveaux cas dans des scénarios industriels. Dans la première partie de cette thèse du Chapitre 2 au Chapitre 4, nous nous concentrons sur URLLC dans le spectre sous licence. La première étude est confrontée au problème de garantir le nombre des répétitions dans des uplink configured-grant (CG) ressources. Ensuite, nous étudions la collision entre une eMBB UL transmission d'un UE et une URLLC UL transmission d'un autre UE sur des CG ressources. Enfin, nous recherchons la DL transmission où le feedback de la DL semi-persistent scheduling transmission est abandonné à cause du conflit entre des DL/UL symboles. Dans la deuxième partie du Chapitre 5 au Chapitre 8, nous nous focalisons sur URLLC dans le spectre sans licence. Dans le spectre sans licence, un appareil demande d'accéder au canal en utilisant load based equipment (LBE) ou frame based equipment (FBE). L’incertitude d’acquérir un canal par LBE ou FBE pourrait empêcher la URLLC transmission d’atteindre l’exigence de la latence. Par conséquent, l'étude de l'impact de LBE ou FBE sur la URLLC transmission et des améliorations de LBE et de FBE sont nécessaires.

Motivated by the capabilities of the SDR, we theorize in this work a simultaneous multi-standard radio definition receiver (SMS-SDR). An SMS-SDR receiver will be able to "simultaneously" decode the information of several heterogeneous wireless standards using the same RF front end. Our target networks are random access networks operating in unlicensed bands. These standards operate without centralized coordination and are subject to serious interference between channels of the same type of technology (CT-CCI) because their operating frequency bands overlap. We are developing several new baseband signal processing algorithms to eliminate ICC from single and multi-antenna receivers. We chose the case of the use of narrow-band and broadband signals, paying particular attention to OFDM-based systems, OFDM being an essential physical layer technique of modern wireless standards such as IEEE families 802.11 and 4G. During development, we focus on methods that can operate autonomously in the receiver, that is, without any cooperation from the transmitter or base station. In this way, they are appropriate random access networks operating in unlicensed bands. In addition, the algorithms can be integrated into the existing infrastructure without any significant effort. Finally, our interference mitigation methods are used to develop decision trees that recommend the sequence of steps to mitigate interference between two heterogeneous signals. Finally, we validated our algorithms by implementing them using SDR., Motivés par les capacités du SDR, nous théorisons dans ce travail un récepteur de définition radio multi-standard simultané (SMS-SDR). Un récepteur SMS-SDR sera capable de décoder "simultanément" les informations de plusieurs standards sans fil hétérogènes utilisant le même frontal RF. Nos réseaux cibles sont des réseaux à accès aléatoire fonctionnant dans des bandes sans licence. Ces normes fonctionnent sans coordination centralisée et sont soumises à de graves brouillage entre canaux du même type de technologie (CT-CCI) car leurs bandes de fréquences de fonctionnement se chevauchent. Nous développons plusieurs nouveaux algorithmes de traitement du signal en bande de base afin d'éliminer l'ICC des récepteurs à une et plusieurs antennes. Nous avons choisi le cas de l'utilisation de signaux à bande étroite et à large bande, en accordant une attention particulière aux systèmes basés sur OFDM, l'OFDM étant une technique de couche physique essentielle des normes sans fil modernes telles que les familles IEEE 802.11 et 4G. Au cours du développement, nous nous concentrons sur les méthodes pouvant fonctionner de manière autonome dans le récepteur, c'est-à-dire sans aucune coopération de la part de l'émetteur ou de la station de base. De cette manière, ce sont des réseaux à accès aléatoire appropriés fonctionnant dans des bandes sans licence. De plus, les algorithmes peuvent être intégrés à l'infrastructure existante sans aucun effort significatif. Enfin, nos méthodes d'atténuation des interférences sont utilisées pour développer des arbres de décision qui recommandent la séquence d'étapes permettant d'atténuer les interférences entre deux signaux hétérogènes. Enfin, nous avons validé nos algorithmes en les implémentant à l'aide de SDR.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered as one of the key technologies that will enable the next generation of wireless communications. In order to perform downlink (DL) beamforming algorithms with large antenna arrays, the biggest challenge is the acquisition of accurate channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). To take up this challenge, time division duplex (TDD) is favorable to massive MIMO systems thanks to its channel reciprocity in DL and uplink (UL). However, while the physical channel in the air is reciprocal, the radio-frequency (RF) front-ends in transceivers are not; therefore, calibration should be used in practical systems to compensate the RF hardware asymmetry. In this thesis, we focus on turning massive MIMO concept into reality based on TDD reciprocity calibration. The contributions can be summarized as follows. First, we propose a unified framework for reciprocity calibration, which generalizes various calibration methods existing in literature, providing a higher level view on the calibration problem as well as opening up possibilities of numerous innovations on calibration methods. Second, based on this general representation, we propose three new calibration schemes: a fast calibration method based on antenna grouping, a calibration scheme for hybrid beamforming architecture, as well as a calibration parameter tracking and system health monitoring mechanism which allows fast detection of parameter change. Third, we carried out measurements of calibration parameters on a real platform in order to reveal the hardware properties. Fourth, we study, from a system point of view, how accurately a TDD massive MIMO system should be calibrated. Last but not least, enabled by TDD reciprocity calibration, we build up an open source long term evolution (LTE) compatible massive MIMO testbed based on the OpenAirInterface platform, which can directly provide Internet service to a commercial device. The testbed demonstrates the feasibility of integrating massive MIMO into current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards and its usage in 5G can be a smooth evolution from current 4G systems., Entrées multiples, sorties multiples (MIMO) massif est considéré comme l'une des technologies clés de la prochaine génération de communications sans fil. Afin d'effectuer des algorithmes de formation de faisceau en liaison descendante (DL) avec un grand réseau d'antennes, le plus grand défi est l'acquisition d'informations précises d'état de canal à l'émetteur (CSIT). Pour relever ce défi, le duplex à division temporelle (TDD) est favorable aux systèmes MIMO massif grâce à sa réciprocité de canal de la DL et la liaison montante (UL). Cependant, alors que le canal physique dans l'air est réciproque, les front-ends de radiofréquence (RF) dans les émetteurs-récepteurs ne le sont pas ; par conséquent, la calibration devrait être utilisée dans des systèmes pratiques pour compenser l'asymétrie matérielle RF. Dans cette thèse, nous nous efforçons de transformer le concept MIMO massif en réalité en utilisant la calibration de la réciprocité TDD. Les contributions peuvent être résumées comme suit. Tout d'abord, nous proposons un cadre unifié pour la calibration de la réciprocité, qui généralise diverses méthodes de calibration existant dans la littérature, offrant une vue supérieure sur le problème de calibration ainsi que l'ouverture de nombreuses innovations sur les méthodes de calibration. Deuxièmement, sur la base de cette représentation générale, nous proposons trois nouveaux schémas de calibration : une méthode de calibration rapide basée sur le groupement d'antennes, un schéma de calibration pour l'architecture hybride de formation de faisceau, ainsi qu'un mécanisme de suivi des paramètres de calibration et de surveillance de la santé du système qui permet une détection rapide du changement de paramètre. Troisièmement, nous avons effectué des mesures des paramètres de calibration sur une plate-forme réelle afin de révéler les propriétés matérielles. Quatrièmement, nous étudions, du point de vue du système, avec quelle précision un système MIMO massif TDD devrait être calibré. Enfin, grâce à la calibration de réciprocité TDD, nous avons construit un banc d’essai pour MIMO massif, qui est compatible avec l'évolution à long terme (LTE) basé sur la plate-forme « open source » OpenAirInterface, et peut directement fournir un service Internet à un appareil commercial. Le banc d'essai démontre la faisabilité d'intégrer le MIMO massif dans les normes actuelles du projet de partenariat de troisième génération (3GPP) et son utilisation dans le 5G peut être une évolution à partir des systèmes 4G actuels.

The main focus of this thesis is to highlight the importance of PHY abstraction for the system level evaluations in the framework of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. This thesis presents a pragmatic approach towards the use of PHY abstraction in LTE based system level simulators. PHY abstraction is an extremely valuable low complexity tool for efficient and realistic large scale system evaluations. This thesis shows that apart from the primary purpose of PHY abstraction of providing instantaneous link quality indicator for the purpose of system level evaluations, it can be further used for an improved channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback based on the different antenna configurations and for the performance prediction of LTE networks based on the real life channel measurements. This thesis is mainly divided into two parts; methodologies and applications. The first part presents the complete design and validation methodology of PHY abstraction schemes for various antennaconfigurations corresponding to different transmission modes in LTE. The validation is performed using link level simulators and it also highlights the calibration issues necessary for the PHY abstraction to be accurate in predicting the performance of capacity achieving turbo codes., L'objectif de cette thèse est de souligner l'importance de l'abstraction de la couche physique (PHY abstraction) dans l'évaluation des systèmes LTE (Long Term Evolution). Cette thèse propose une approche pragmatique pour l'utilisation de PHY abstraction dans les simulateurs des systèmes LTE. PHY abstraction est un outil très important pour l'évaluation des systèmes LTE à grande échelle car il est efficace, pratique et à complexité réduite . Dans cette thèse, nous prouvons que, à part son objectif principal et qui consiste à fournir un indicateur instantané de la qualité de liaison pour l'évaluation du système, le PHY abstraction peut aussi: améliorer le feedback de l'indicateur sur la qualité de canal (CQI) en se basant sur les différentes configurations d'antennes, et la prédiction de la performance des réseaux LTE en se basant sur des mesures de canal réelles. Cette thèse est principalement divisée en deux parties: méthodologies et applications. La première partie présente la conception complète et la méthodologie de validation des systèmes de captage PHY pour différentes configurations d'antennes correspondant à des différentes modes de transmissions en LTE. La validation est effectuée en utilisant des simulateurs de niveau de liaison. Nous soulignons aussi les astuces de calibrage nécessaires pour que la production PHY soit précise dans la prédiction de la performance de capacité réalisant turbo-codes.
