This thesis focuses on the Lyon Chamber of Commerce (and Industry) between 1957 and 1992 from a perspective that questions its international opening. Since the 19th century, this business institution was characterized by its extraversion: dominated by the silk industry, it sought to ensure the free movement of raw materials and manufactured products. However, the economic and political transformations of the 20th century challenge this openness. Facing the liberalization of European and global trade from 1957 onwards, the members of the Chamber initially adopt a more protectionist attitude. One aim of the thesis is to show that, facing deindustrialization and the acceleration of globalization, they develop a global strategy aimed at making Lyon a metropolis with international influence, attractive to foreign companies and investments. During this period, the face of the Chamber changes. First, less and less notables compose it. Second, it sees its influence wane at the local and national levels. The complexity of the relationship between the Chamber and the State is highlighted, alternating between mutual dependence, cooperation and conflict. The Chamber of Commerce declines: the missions it used to fulfil in the 19th century are progressively taken over by other public and private actors. However, its intimate knowledge of the local economic fabric allows it to survive and to take on new missions.; La présente thèse étudie la chambre de commerce (et d’industrie) de Lyon entre 1957 et 1992 du point de vue de son ouverture internationale. Depuis le XIXe siècle, cette institution au service des entreprises se caractérisait par son extraversion : dominée par les soyeux, elle cherchait à assurer la libre circulation des matières premières et des marchandises exportées. Mais les mutations économiques et politiques du XXe siècle remettent en cause cette ouverture. Face à la libéralisation des échanges commerciaux en Europe et dans le monde à partir de 1957, les membres de la Chambre adoptent d’abord une attitude plus protectionniste. On montre que face à la désindustrialisation et à l’accélération de la mondialisation, ils développent une stratégie globale visant à faire de Lyon une métropole au rayonnement international, attractive pour les entreprises et investissements étrangers. Au cours de la période étudiée, le visage de la Chambre se transforme : de moins en moins composée de notables, elle voit son influence diminuer aux niveaux local et national. On met en évidence la complexité des relations entre la Chambre et l’État qui alternent entre dépendance réciproque, coopération et conflit. L’institution consulaire connaît un déclin : les missions qu’elle remplissait sont reprises par d’autres acteurs publics et privés. Sa connaissance intime du tissu économique local lui permet toutefois de subsister et de se charger de nouvelles missions.

Many informal firms in developing countries would not be viable if they were to comply with the minimum wage law. This means the authorities have an incentive to turn a blind eye to non-enforcement in a substantial share of firms. We also survey enforcement mechanisms for the minimum wage across developing countries and find that worker complaints are an important element in determining whether firms will be inspected for non-compliance or not. We develop a theoretical monopsony model which rationalises the stylised facts we observe. For a given minimum wage, the government can choose a level of enforcement and penalties for non-compliance such that employment will not fall for any optimising firm, irrespective of their productivity. Low productivity firm’s optimal choice of employment and wage will be unaffected by the introduction of the minimum wage. High productivity firms comply so that wage and employment effects are non-negative for these firms.

International audience; Managing innovation can be summed up by two famous phrases. The first is attributed to the scientist Archimedes: « Eureka, I have found it ». It applies to the individual, it is a cognitive and emotional phenomenon that leads him to feel a certain wonder and the pleasant sensation of having found a solution to the problem posed (Lubart et al., 2015). In management, this discovery or « revelation » focuses on a management situation (Amabile, 1988; Carrier and Gélinas, 2011) such as, with reference to Olso’s Manual, the design of a new product or service, a new organization or commercialization, a new business model, etc. (Lubart et al., 2015). Coming from the mind or brain of an individual, this creative idea arises a priori spontaneously from the reorganization of information, facts, knowledge, and experiences that he or she has accumulated during formal or informal research, alone or with other individuals in the organization or not, such as consumers. So this idea does not come alone. It is nurtured by an enabling context and interpersonal relationships that enable such discovery. But, this idea may prove to be a failure, hence the second phrase put forward by Winston Churchill: « Shoot for the moon, and if you miss you’ll land among the stars« . Even if the idea is original, new and promising, it is possible that it will never be applied in the organization, for economic, financial, technological or marketing reasons (St-Pierre et al., 2017). Furthermore, if it is implemented, studies indicate that the failure rate of innovations that are brought to market is around 85%. Indeed, innovation is only effective from the moment the novelty is introduced, as the etymology of the term indicates. No matter how enthusiastic he or she may be, the bearer of the idea will struggle to convince and interest enough people around him or her, hence the risk of a lack of ownership of the idea within the organization (Royer, 2002). Kotter (2016:12) explains, « The deeper you get into it, the more obvious it becomes that convincing others to ‘buy’ your ideas is both a human issue and a vital skill.« In fact, innovation implies an exploratory approach where the individual interacts both to enhance the value of his idea and to revise it according to the feedback from his interlocutors. Beyond technical knowledge or know-how, social skills, such as empathy, listening, persuasive communication and networking, are just as important. If we agree that innovation is experimenting and testing, we must admit that trial, error and failure will be part of the experiment as well. The Wright brothers spent three years trying different glider prototypes with multiple failures before they achieved their first successful motor-powered and controlled flight in an aircraft. The failures were a source of learning, allowing the two brothers to improve their idea into an innovation. In the corporate world, innovation also goes through many failures in the form of unfinished, unvalidated, or overly expensive ideas, etc. Even if it does not led to innovations, this knowledge is very useful and feeds the organization’s creative slack, i.e. a pool of ideas from which the organization can draw to innovate again (Cohendet and Simon, 2015; Gay and Szostak, 2019). This consolidates its capacity to innovate or propensity to realize innovations (Hadjimanolis, 2000; Wang and Ahmed, 2004; Kmieciak et al., 2012). It took Nestlé more than 15 years to find the right commercial and strategic formula to sell espresso to a mass market. Several times, the project was almost abandoned after several failures in the market. A brief discussion of these famous formulas applied to the world of organizations leads us to underline how difficult it is to manage innovation: it involves individuals, the organization, their capacities and resources; it requires a variably long time frame due, among other things, to potential failures; it meshes the internal space of the organization, but also the external space. However, innovation is essential to resist in a competitive market, to differentiate oneself from one’s competitors, or to create a new activity or even a new market in a disruptive manner (Porter, 1996; Kim and Mauborgne, 2005; Christensen et al., 2015). The question that many managers then ask themselves is: how to manage innovation? In other words, how do we find the ideas that give rise to innovations, select them and share them within the organization and then with other stakeholders? The purpose of this essay is to propose elements of response according to three complementary dimensions summarized in a symbolic way under the three notions: « space, time and matter ». The first is particularly concerned with space as seen from the perspective of organizational boundaries. The objective is to understand their roles in innovation, the actors involved, and the challenges posed for organizations in terms of innovation management. The second dimension focuses on presenting the emblematic processes of innovation, in particular the stage-gate from the idea to the implementation of the innovation. The third dimension refers to the material, sensitive version of innovation, i.e. the product, the service, a new organization, etc., and returns to its appropriation by individuals and the challenges faced by managers.

The commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War gave rise to numerous publications. The economy was not forgotten, but the perspective often remained very national. This book focuses on the economy of Germany as the allies’ main opponent and war loser., La commémoration du centenaire de la Grande Guerre a donné lieu à de nombreuses publications. L’économie n’a pas été oubliée. Mais la perspective est souvent restée très nationale. Cet ouvrage s’intéresse à l’économie du principal adversaire et perdant, l’Allemagne. Lui non plus n’était pas préparé à une guerre longue. Lui aussi s’est trouvé pris dans la contradiction entre mobiliser toutes ses forces sur le front et préserver la main-d’œuvre pour assurer l’approvisionnement par l’arrière. L’État, avec un poids plus fort du pouvoir militaire en Allemagne, s’en est également mêlé de plus en plus, sans aller jusqu’à remettre en cause complètement l’initiative privée. La défaite finale était largement inscrite dans la disproportion initiale des ressources, aggravée par l’entrée en guerre des États-Unis. Les contributions des meilleurs spécialistes allemands, du charbon à l’agriculture, en passant par l’aéronautique ou la chimie, sont discutées ici par leurs homologues français.

Building parable economies embedding econometricians, we view alternative estimators (Instrumental variables, fuzzy regression discontinuity, natural experiments, OLS, event studies) from the perspective of privately informed decision-makers, e.g., CFOs. Instrumental variable estimates can be misleading since randomization through observable instruments eliminates signal content arising from discretion. If the goal is informing discretionary decisions, rather than predicting outcomes after forced/mistaken actions, instrumentation is problematic, whereas OLS or event studies can be sufficient. The analysis shows that the utility of alternative estimators hinges upon often neglected assumptions about agent/econometrician information sets, as distinct from exclusion restrictions. We recommend parable economy estimation before real-world IV estimation.

In an economic and entrepreneurial environment that is increasingly competitive, but still characterised by a form of uncertainty and unpredictability, it is clear that african enterprises, like firms in developing countries,must demonstrate adaptability, precaution and even anticipation.The present doctoral work addresses several themes related to this observation, which are closely linked to the notion of the management of constraints by the firm in its development cycle. In otherwords, this thesis addresses the impact of environmental constraints on the development of firms in Sub-Saharan Africa. It thus aims to shed light on this debate in the African context by proposing three empirical essays.It is structured around four chapters, including an introductory chapter (chapter1) which motivates the thesis by describing the characteristics, the entrepreneurial landscape and some of the main bottlenecks affecting the development of African firms. The next three chapters bring toget her the contributions of this thesis to the literature. Thus, chapter 2 examines, from as ample of MSMEs, the determinants of the financials tructure of firms in Côte d’Ivoire. Chapter 3 empirically analyses the resilience and rebound capacity of Ivorian firms in the aftermath of the post-electoralcrisis of 2011, which left more than 3,000 people dead and 735,000refugees. Chapter 4 examines, from a larges ampl eof firms, the effects of the duality of the Senegalese tax system on the performance of firms and on Senegalese tax revenues.; Dans un environnement économique et entrepreneurial de plus en plus compétitif, mais caractérisé quand même par une forme d’incertitude et d’imprévisibilité, force est de constater que les entreprises africaines, à l’instar des firmes dans les pays en développement, doivent faire preuve d’adaptabilité, de précaution et même d’anticipation. Ce travail doctoral aborde plusieurs thématiques liées à ce constat, qui touchent de près la notion de gestion des contraintes par la firme dans son cycle de développement. En d’autres termes, cette thèse s’intéresse à l’impact des contraintes d’environnement sur le développement des entreprises en Afrique subsaharienne. Elle vise ainsi à éclairer ce débat dans le contexte africain en proposant trois essais empiriques. Elle est structurée autour de quatre chapitres dont un chapitre introductif (chapitre1) qui motive le propos de cette thèse en décrivant les caractéristiques, le paysage entrepreneurial et quelques principaux goulots d’étranglement qui affectent le développement des firmes africaines. Les trois chapitres suivants regroupent les contributions de cette thèse à la littérature. Ainsi, le chapitre 2 examine, à partir d’un échantillon de MPME, les déterminants de la structure financière des firmes en Côte d’Ivoire. Le chapitre 3 analyse empiriquement la capacité de résilience et de rebond des entreprises ivoiriennes à la suite de la crise post-électorale de 2011qui a fait plus de 3000morts et 735000 réfugiés. Le chapitre 4 étudie, à partir d’un large échantillon d’entreprises, les effets de la dualité du système fiscal sénégalais sur la performance des firmes et sur les recettes fiscales du Sénégal.

This thesis aims to empirically investigate the effects of foreign aid on different aspects of governance in recipient countries, namely elections, corruption, and democracy. The firstchapter focuses on electoral outcomes in Uganda, the second chapter focuses on World Bank aid and corruption in firms, and the last chapter focuses on aid and country-level democratic outcomes globally. The results shown that aid has different impacts on different aspects of goverance. I find evidence of aid used as a vote-buying mechanism to benefit the incumbent in Uganda, but multilateral aid seems to reduce corruption at the firm-level, and aid also seems to foster democracy albeit with a very small effect., Cette thèse propose une analyse empirique des effets de l'aide étrangère sur différents aspects de la gouvernance dans les pays bénéficiaires, à savoir les élections, la corruption et la démocratie. Le premier chapitre se concentre sur les résultats électoraux en Ouganda, le deuxième chapitre se concentre sur l'aide de la Banque mondiale et la corruption dans les firmes, et le dernier chapitre se concentre sur l'aide et la démocratie au niveau des pays dans le monde. Les résultats ont montré que l'aide a des impacts différents sur différents aspects de la gouvernance. Je trouve des évidences de l'utilisation de l'aide comme mécanisme d'achat de votes au profit du titulaire en Ouganda, mais l'aide multilatérale semble réduire la corruption au niveau de l'entreprise, et l'aide semble également favoriser la démocratie, bien qu'avec un très petit effet.

The ‘financialisation’ of the economy is considered a key phenomenon of our time, but we lack large-scale empirical evidence of it. Has financialisation in the non-financial corporate sector really taken off in recent decades? To answer this question, I marshal data on all available publicly traded corporations in the largest 37 countries from 1991 to 2017. While there has been a decline in ‘real’ capital accumulation, I do not find firms are substituting tangible for financial investment. Financial income and financial asset shares have declined over time. Only by one measure – shareholder payouts – is there significant growth. To the extent we do see financialisation behaviour, it is overwhelmingly accounted for by very large and internationalised firms. In light of these findings, I argue that non-financial sector financialisation is connected to changes in the global production process which allows a small number of powerful firms to recycle surplus profits into financial capital.

The French labor market is characterized by high unemployment, a very strong segmentation and a high degree of conflict. This thesis returns, in four articles, to the origins of this situation and the public policies that can remedy it.; Le marché du travail français se caractérise par un chômage élevé, une segmentation très forte et un degré de conflit important. International audience; This paper studies exporting firms’ reaction to weather shocks in destination countries, and the role played by trade diversion as a shock-coping strategy. Using detailed customs data from France, from 1995 to 2009, I show that the geography of exports across markets both at the firm and the aggregate levels are affected by temperature shocks. At the firm level, temperature shocks have a trade deterring effect, in particular for larger firms. I rationalize this result by trade diversion motives: large firms divert away from countries under heat and reduce their exports to these markets. At the aggregate level, temperature shocks in a destination market generate a change in the set of exporting firms that serve this market, in the favor of smaller firms, while larger firms divert their exports, thus generating an aggregate trade diversion away from destinations under heat.; Cet article étudie la réaction des entreprises exportatrices aux chocs climatiques dans les pays de destination, et le rôle joué par le détournement des échanges en tant que stratégie d’adaptation aux chocs. En utilisant des données douanières détaillées de la France, de 1995 à 2009, je montre que la géographie des exportations sur les marchés tant au niveau de l'entreprise qu'au niveau agrégé est affectée par les chocs de température. Au niveau de l'entreprise, les chocs de température ont un effet dissuasif sur les échanges, en particulier pour les grandes entreprises. Je rationalise ce résultat par des motifs de détournement des échanges: les grandes entreprises se détournent des pays où les températures augmentent et réduisent leurs exportations vers ces marchés. Au niveau agrégé, les chocs de température sur un marché de destination génèrent un changement dans l'ensemble des entreprises exportatrices qui desservent ce marché, en faveur des petites entreprises, tandis que les grandes entreprises détournent leurs exportations, générant ainsi un détournement global des échanges loin des destinations où la température augmente.

International audience; This study assesses the effect of an economy’s business environment on the ability of firms to be part of a global value chain (GVC). With the use of a comprehensive firm-level dataset from the World Bank Enterprise Survey—and with a special focus on the countries of the Middle East and North Africa and East Asia and Pacific regions—the contribution of the paper is threefold: First, it provides a range of measures of the characteristics of firms that would identify a firm as likely to be integrated into a GVC. Second, it examines the association between an array of business environment variables—infrastructure; access to finance; fiscal policy; enforcement of contracts; ease of obtaining permits; extent of the informal sector; trade procedures; and firm and investor security—and the likelihood of a firm’s being integrated into a GVC. Third, we examine these effects separately for small and large firms and for sectors with high and low tariffs. Our main findings show that, in general, the number of days that are required to pay taxes, the number of procedures that are necessary to register property, and the time to export and to import have a significantly negative association with the likelihood of a firm’s integration into a GVC. More heterogeneity is observed at the regional level, at the firm size level, and for sectors with high versus low tariffs.

We analyze the individual and macroeconomic impacts of heterogeneous expectations and action rules within an agent-based model populated by heterogeneous, interacting firms. Agents have to cope with a complex evolving economy characterized by deep uncertainty resulting from technical change, imperfect information and coordination hurdles. In these circumstances, we find that neither individual nor macroeconomic dynamics improve when agents replace myopic expectations with less naive learning rules. In fact, more sophisticated, e.g. recursive least squares (RLS) expectations produce less accurate individual forecasts and also considerably worsen the performance of the economy. Finally, we experiment with agents that adjust simply to technological shocks, and we show that individual and aggregate performances dramatically degrade. Our results suggest that fast and frugal robust heuristics are not a second-best option: rather they are “rational” in macroeconomic environments with heterogeneous, interacting agents and changing “fundamentals”.

The purpose of this paper is to study the persistence of firm growth in Africa using data of formal firms in Senegal from 2006 to 2015, dedicating special attention to high-growth firms. This interest in identifying high-growth firms belongs to the idea that these firms will continue to outperform in the future and create jobs. We document, however, that growth rates are negatively correlated across time, especially for high-growth firms. A top performer is more likely to become a bad performer in the next period than sustain its previous performance. Our analysis also reveals that other indicators of performance (as profitability and productivity in the first period) are unrelated to the persistence of growth. This finding challenges the possibility for policymakers and investors to select persistent high-growth firms by scrutinizing their previous performances.

Using a large sample of multinational corporations (MNCs), we examine the location of earnings management within the firm. We posit and find that MNCs manage their consolidated earnings through an orchestrated reporting strategy across subsidiaries over which they exert significant influence. Specifically, we find that headquarters' influence on subsidiary earnings management increases with the degree of subsidiary integration and the extent of earnings management opportunities. Most importantly, we provide evidence that MNCs exploit regulatory arbitrage opportunities arising from cross-country differences in institutional quality. We document that, in response to exogenous improvements in the quality of their home-country institutions, MNCs rebalance their reporting strategies by clustering earnings management in subsidiaries from countries with more lenient regulations. Taken together, our findings yield important insights on the drivers of earnings management location within the firm and highlight the need for better cross-country coordination in regulatory design. The political economy is an important determinant of the successes and failures of public policies. This dissertation explores how the political economy has shaped socio-political outcomes. I use a comparative study, a study of a fiscal subsidies, and a case study of liberalization to elaborate this point. In the comparative study on Turkey and Tunisia, I observe that workforce skills have a measurable impact on productivity in Turkey, a country that abandoned import substitution industrialization at a relatively early stage. Whereas the post-colonial institutional setting of the economy and relatively later import substitution industrialization in Tunisia is not amenable to harnessing the skills of the workforce for productivity --- even if levels of education were historically higher than in Turkey. A case study on government intervention in the form of firm subsidies in Tunisia finds that governments can use firm subsidies to extend control over the private sector, while still reporting measurable and observable positive benefits to the economy. Lastly, a case study on liberalization demonstrated in Egypt that reforms to remove administrative and tariff barriers disproportionately helped firms in industries with no known government cronies and reduced tariff evasion. However, government cronies operating in the historically important natural resource sector still reaped benefits from liberalization reforms.; Les succès et les échecs des politiques publiques sont, en large partie, sont influencés par le contexte politique et institutionnel des économies. Cette thèse analyse la manière dont les résultats socio-économiques des pays de la région MENA sont déterminées par l'environnement institutionnel et politique des différents pays. Trois essais sont proposés. Le premier étudie l'impact des qualifications sur la productivité à l'aide d'une comparaison entre deux pays, la Turquie et la Tunisie. Le second analyse l'impact des subventions sur les performances des firmes. Le troisième étudie l'effet de l'ouverture commerciale sur les importations des biens manufacturés selon que les firmes font partie des secteurs connectés au pouvoir politique ou pas, dans le cas de l'Égypte.L'étude comparative Turquie-Tunisie, montre que les compétences des travailleurs ont bien un impact mesurable sur la productivité de la Turquie, mais pas en Tunisie. En Turquie, l'industrialisation par substitution aux importations a été démantelée relativement tôt, alors qu'en Tunisie la politique postcoloniale a abandonné sa politique d’industrialisation par substitution aux importations relativement tard. En conséquence, le haut niveau des compétences de la main-d’œuvre en Tunisie n'a pas pu contribué à la productivité à la différence de la Turquie. Ensuite, l'étude de l'intervention gouvernementale sous forme de subvention auprès des firmes en Tunisie, montre que, comme attendu, les subventions permettent aux gouvernements d'étendre leur contrôle sur les entreprises privées. Cette politique a produit des effets contrastés sur les entreprises tunisiennes. Elle a favorisé l'emploi dans les petites entreprises, tandis que dans les grands entreprises, c'est le capital qui en a bénéficié. Enfin, le dernier essai concernant l'économie égyptienne montre que la réduction des barrières commerciales a davantage bénéficié aux firmes présentes dans les secteurs dans lesquels on n'observe pas de lien de connexion entre l’État et les entreprises. La réduction de l'évasion fiscalo-douanière favorise les firmes plus compétitives.

This PhD thesis has as objective to examine the place and the importance of accessibility in location choice models of households and firms, two key construction elements of Land-Use Transport Interaction models. More specifically, the aim is to analyse the effect of various methodological choices from a theoretical and empirical point of view in order to give some answers to theoretical, methodological, empirical and policy issues. Having as a case study the urban area of Lyon and using discrete models to explain the location choices of households and firms, four research papers comprise the main work of this dissertation.In the first paper, the objective was to analyse the effect of the accessibility measure on the results of residential location choice model. While accessibility has always been important at theoretical level, at empirical level, some works questioned its importance, considering other location characteristics as more influential. This paper examines whether different accessibility measurement methods can lead to divergent results. The conclusion is that accessibility is an indispensable variable for residential location choice models and the conclusion remains the same whatever is the measure. Without accessibility, the model gives inconsistent results. Complex accessibility measures give better results, especially for predictions, but simple measures are also relevant for residential location choices modelling.In the second paper, the objective was to analyse the differences of accessibility preferences between new and relocating firms. Accessibility is one of the most important attributes of a location choice of an economic establishment. However, even if it seems intuitive, works analysing any differences between creations and relocations are scarce. Using data from eighteconomic sectors and comparing creations to relocations, the results demonstrate that the effect of accessibility differs between in the same economic sector.In the third paper, the objective was to evaluate the difference of the accessibility impact on the location choices of firms of the business services sector. Distinguishing between Front Office and Back Office business services in a location choice model, the results demonstrate that the effect of accessibility differs between economic subsectors.In the fourth paper, the objective was to analyse the temporal evolution of the preferences for accessibility for residential choices. More and more people choose to buy a residence at the suburbs taking advantage of the accessibility increase. At the same time, young households, the so called millennials, choose to rent in central areas. Distinguishing between renters andowners, the analysis of the elasticities for 1999, 2006 and 2013 confirm the initial intuition. Renters were always more sensitive to accessibility to employment. More importantly, renters show an increasing preference for accessibility during the analysis period, while the owners the opposite. We suggest that planners and model developers should integrate temporal dynamics into their models in order to anticipate better future tendencies.; La présente thèse de doctorat a pour objectif d'examiner la place et l'importance de l'accessibilité dans les modèles de choix de localisation des ménages et des entreprises. Ces modèles sont deux éléments clés de la conception et la construction des modèles d'interaction transport – usages du sol. Il s’agit, plus précisément, d’analyser l’effet de divers choix méthodologiques d’un point de vue théorique et empirique afin de donner des réponses à des interrogations tout aussi théoriques, méthodologiques, empiriques et politiques. Pour y répondre, quatre articles de recherche constituent le travail principal de la thèse. Les quatre travaux produits ont pour objet l’étude de l’aire urbaine lyonnaise et utilisant des modèles de choix discrets pour expliquer les choix de localisation.Dans le premier article, l’objectif est d’analyser l’effet de la mesure d’accessibilité sur les résultats du modèle de choix de localisation résidentielle. L'accessibilité est l'un des facteurs les plus importants du choix de localisation d’une entreprise. Cependant, même si cela semble intuitif, les travaux analysant les différences entre les créations et les relocalisations sont peu nombreux. En utilisant des données pour huit secteurs d’activités économiques et en confrontant les créations aux relocalisations, les résultats démontrent que l’effet de l’accessibilité diffère d’un secteur économique à l’autre. Cette différence dépend du type d’activité économique du secteur mais aussi du type d’accessibilité.Dans le troisième article, l’objectif est d’évaluer la différence d’impact de l’accessibilité sur les choix de localisation des entreprises du secteur des services aux entreprises. En distinguant les services entre Front Office et Back Office selon leur fonction dans un modèle de choix de localisation, les résultats démontrent que l'effet de l'accessibilité diffère d'un sous-secteur économique à l'autre. Dans le quatrième papier, l'objectif est d'analyser l'évolution temporelle des préférences en matièred'accessibilité des choix résidentiels. De plus en plus de ménages choisissent d’acheter une résidence en banlieue, profitant ainsi de l’augmentation de l’accessibilité. En opposition, les jeunes ménages, appelés aussi «millennials», choisissent de louer dans les zones centrales. Distinguant les locataires des propriétaires, l'analyse des élasticités de périodes 1999, 2006 et 2013 confirme l'intuition initiale qui est que les locataires sont plus sensibles à l'accessibilité à l'emploi. Plus important encore, lapréférence des locataires évolue et croit au cours de la période analysée, alors que celle des propriétaires évolue de façon inverse. Nous suggérons aux planificateurs et aux concepteurs de modèles d’intégrer la dynamique temporelle dans leurs modèles afin d'anticiper au mieux les tendances futures.

International audience; This paper analyses arbitration as a surrogate for complete contracts. We embed this idea in a simple model of a long-term relationship between a firm and its workforce, in which they can make productive-enhancing, relationship-specific investments, and then negotiate over the division of the resultant surplus. It is shown that the mere presence of the arbitrator (in the background of negotiations) may enhance investment incentives ex ante by minimizing each party’s ability to engage in hold-up behaviours ex post. Furthermore, we highlight notably that the partners should optimally commit to call an arbitrator ensuring a compromise by awarding a reasonable share of the surplus to the worker. Indeed, this type of arbitrator would harmonize the parties’ bargaining powers and then weight their investment incentives optimally.

The political economy is an important determinant of the successes and failures of public policies. This dissertation explores how the political economy has shaped socio-political outcomes. I use a comparative study, a study of a fiscal subsidies, and a case study of liberalization to elaborate this point. In the comparative study on Turkey and Tunisia, I observe that workforce skills have a measurable impact on productivity in Turkey, a country that abandoned import substitution industrialization at a relatively early stage. Whereas the post-colonial institutional setting of the economy and relatively later import substitution industrialization in Tunisia is not amenable to harnessing the skills of the workforce for productivity --- even if levels of education were historically higher than in Turkey. A case study on government intervention in the form of firm subsidies in Tunisia finds that governments can use firm subsidies to extend control over the private sector, while still reporting measurable and observable positive benefits to the economy. Lastly, a case study on liberalization demonstrated in Egypt that reforms to remove administrative and tariff barriers disproportionately helped firms in industries with no known government cronies and reduced tariff evasion. However, government cronies operating in the historically important natural resource sector still reaped benefits from liberalization reforms., Les succès et les échecs des politiques publiques sont, en large partie, sont influencés par le contexte politique et institutionnel des économies. Cette thèse analyse la manière dont les résultats socio-économiques des pays de la région MENA sont déterminées par l'environnement institutionnel et politique des différents pays. Trois essais sont proposés. Le premier étudie l'impact des qualifications sur la productivité à l'aide d'une comparaison entre deux pays, la Turquie et la Tunisie. Le second analyse l'impact des subventions sur les performances des firmes. Le troisième étudie l'effet de l'ouverture commerciale sur les importations des biens manufacturés selon que les firmes font partie des secteurs connectés au pouvoir politique ou pas, dans le cas de l'Égypte.L'étude comparative Turquie-Tunisie, montre que les compétences des travailleurs ont bien un impact mesurable sur la productivité de la Turquie, mais pas en Tunisie. En Turquie, l'industrialisation par substitution aux importations a été démantelée relativement tôt, alors qu'en Tunisie la politique postcoloniale a abandonné sa politique d’industrialisation par substitution aux importations relativement tard. En conséquence, le haut niveau des compétences de la main-d’œuvre en Tunisie n'a pas pu contribué à la productivité à la différence de la Turquie. Ensuite, l'étude de l'intervention gouvernementale sous forme de subvention auprès des firmes en Tunisie, montre que, comme attendu, les subventions permettent aux gouvernements d'étendre leur contrôle sur les entreprises privées. Cette politique a produit des effets contrastés sur les entreprises tunisiennes. Elle a favorisé l'emploi dans les petites entreprises, tandis que dans les grands entreprises, c'est le capital qui en a bénéficié. Enfin, le dernier essai concernant l'économie égyptienne montre que la réduction des barrières commerciales a davantage bénéficié aux firmes présentes dans les secteurs dans lesquels on n'observe pas de lien de connexion entre l’État et les entreprises. La réduction de l'évasion fiscalo-douanière favorise les firmes plus compétitives.

International audience; We identify two counteracting effects of credit access on productivity growth: on the one hand, better access to credit makes it easier for entrepreneurs to innovate; on the other hand, better credit access allows less efficient incumbent firms to remain longer on the market, thereby discouraging entry of new and potentially more efficient innovators. We first develop a simple model of firm dynamics and innovation‐based growth with credit constraints, where the above two counteracting effects generate an inverted‐U relationship between credit access and productivity growth. Then we test our theory on a comprehensive French manufacturing firm‐level dataset. We first show evidence of an inverted‐U relationship between credit constraints and productivity growth when we aggregate our data at the sectoral level. We then move to firm‐level analysis, and show that incumbent firms with easier access to credit experience higher productivity growth, but that they also experience lower exit rates, particularly the least productive firms among them. To support these findings, we exploit the 2012 Eurosystem's Additional Credit Claims programme as a quasi‐experiment that generated an exogenous extra supply of credits for a subset of incumbent firms.

International audience; This article seeks to make a sociological contribution to the study of capitalism in France and Britain. In view of this, we analyze major defense industry company managers’ relationships to the State, and the internationalization and financialization of their careers (Safran, Thales, BAe Systems and Rolls-Royce). We go beyond the dispute between the convergence and divergence of national defense capitalisms, by unveiling a counter-intuitive and unexpected reality, namely their simultaneity. Specifically, on both sides of the English Channel, the practices of these large company directors have become more structured than hitherto by the internationalization of their training and their knowledge of finance, while at the same time, their relationship to the state has changed profoundly.; Cet article apporte une contribution sociologique à la comparaison des capitalismes en France et au Royaume-Uni. Pour ce faire, le rapport à l’État, l’internationalisation et la financiarisation des trajectoires professionnelles des dirigeants de grandes entreprises de l’industrie de la défense (Safran, Thales, BAe Systems et Rolls-Royce) sont interrogés. La controverse entre convergence et divergence des capitalismes nationaux de la défense est dépassée par le dévoilement d’une réalité contre-intuitive et inattendue, à savoir leur simultanéité. En même temps que les pratiques des dirigeants des grandes entreprises des deux côtés de la Manche sont plus structurées que jadis par l’internationalisation de leur formation et leur familiarité avec le monde financier, leur rapport à l’État demeure nettement différent.

International audience; The digital revolution imposes new modes of consumption and production. Internet, networks, big data, information flows, connected objects, applied services: the whole ecosystem is modified. Beyond the major socio-economic issues, there are upheavals in geopolitical equilibrium and the emergence of a new economic order, despite low levels of growth. Leading firms, such as GAFAM, are adopting monopolistics strategies that threaten the major market equilibria and force us to question the regulatory instruments.

In Minsky's Financial Instability Hypothesis (FIH), financial fragility of non-financial firms tends to increase endogenously over the cycle along with the macroeconomic leverage ratio. This analysis has been criticized for two main complementary reasons: firstly, it does not duly consider the aggregate pro-cyclicallity of profits; secondly, due to an overly aggregate analysis, some inferences about the relation between aggregate leverage and systemic fragility are potentially misleading. In this paper, we take these criticisms into account by building an agent-based stock-flow consistent model which integrates the real and financial sides of the economy in a fundamentally dynamic environment. We calibrate and simulate our model and show that the dynamics generated are in line with empirical evidence both at the micro and the macro levels. We create a financial fragility index and examine how systemic financial fragility relates to the aggregate leverage along the cycle. We show that our model yields both Min-skian regimes, in which the aggregate leverage increases along with investment, and Steindlian regimes, where investment brings leverage down. Our key findings are that the sensitivity of financial fragility to aggregate leverage is not as big as assumed in the literature; and that the distribution of profits amongst firms does matter for the stability of the system, both statically (immediately for financial fragility) and dynamically (because of the dynamics of leverage).

The whole ecosystem is modified by the development of Internet, networks, big data, information flows, connected objects and applied services. The firms are adopting monopolistic and oligopolistic strategies that converge towards a new model.

International audience; The aim of this paper is to provide an exhaustive survey of the academic research dedicated to the study of human capital‐intensive firms (HCIFs). We use a bibliometric analysis based on the three widely used databases (Econlit, Science Direct and Wiley) over the period 1992–2015. We are adapting a methodology developed in previous works to our specific object of study, and we generate a bottom‐up clustering on keywords, titles and abstracts. Our examination of the data sheds a light on five main clusters of works that respectively focus on (1) critical human resource management, (2) intellectual capital assessment, (3) funding risk and innovation (4) high‐skilled employees supporting economic development and (5) internal and external valuable social networks. In a critical appraisal of our results, we stress that the bibliometric analysis remains silent on how the different clusters are linked with each other. Based on our own appreciation of the HCIFs literature, we propose a further step in the identification of a central question linking up these clusters: a transversal review of the five clusters reveals that HCIFs appear as a network of specialized agents whose complementary human resources are decisive for the value‐creation process.

Can changing the rules of the game affect government performance? We study the impact of a simple procedural reform on efficiency and quality of adjudication in Senegal. The reform gave judges the duty and powers to conclude pre-trial proceedings within a four-month deadline. We combine a staggered rollout across the six civil and commercial chambers of the court of Dakar and three years of high-frequency caseload data to construct an event study. We find a reduction in procedural formalism, as the length of the pre-trial stage decreases by 42.9 days (0.29 SD) and the number of case-level pre-trial hearings is reduced, while judges are more likely to impose deadlines. The effect is similar for small and large cases, while fast and slow judges are equally likely to apply the reform. The evidence suggests that these efficiency gains have no adverse impact on quality, while we document positive firm-level effects.

International audience; Research Summary: To prevent loss of control post‐IPO, founder‐CEOs can implement control‐enhancing mechanisms disconnecting ownership from voting rights. However, this decision places them in a rich versus king dilemma. If they choose to implement such mechanisms and secure the king position, they risk losing money at IPO. If they choose not to implement control‐enhancing mechanisms and adopt the rich position they risk losing control over the firm. We investigate theoretically and empirically the outcomes of this dilemma in a multi‐period setting (at IPO and post‐IPO). We found that the majority of founder‐CEOs who choose the king option recover initial wealth loss, and hence, they can reconcile the rich and king paths in the long‐run post‐IPO.Managerial Summary: Founder‐CEOs often use control‐enhancing mechanisms (CEMs), such dual class shares, pyramid control structures, and pact agreements, to maintain control over their IPO firms. In this study, we investigate the effects of these CEMs on firm value at IPO and post‐IPO using a unique hand‐collected dataset comprising all founder‐CEO led firms that went public on French regulated markets between January 1992 and December 2010. We found that most founder‐CEOs who use multiple CEMs leave considerable amounts of money on the table at IPO date but they are able to recover their initial loss 5 years post‐IPO. This result suggests that an IPO may constitute a valuable financing alternative even for founder‐CEOs who value control.

International audience This paper proposes to broaden by more than 10%-compared with the current practice-the set of applications for priority patents, which is used to compute worldwide patent indicators. This extension is made possible thanks to the inclusion in the corpus of documents used for the calculation of indicators of the first filing patent applications that are designated as " artificial priority patents " in the PATSTAT database and currently discarded for the production of indicators. This research aims to show how adding these " artificial " patent applications can modify the value of the worldwide patent indicators. Artificial patent applications have never been used before because they contain very scarce information in their original state. We present a methodology we have developed to, first, replenish the artificial patents with information retrieved from close patents belonging to the same INPADOC family. Then, we study in details a range of indicators characterising the trends in the internationalisation of corporate R&D inventive activities. We provide evidence that the internationalisation pattern can be modified when including replenished artificial corporate patents in the indicator calculation. At the world level, incorporating artificial priority patents does not affect the trends over time, nor introduce any significant changes in the values of the indicators. However, analyses performed at a smaller scale, such as the firms' continent level or the firms' sector, show significant changes of the level of the intercontinental internationalisation in particular for the US firms.

This PhD analyses the forms of social protection regulation implemented by local actors in Grenoble (French Alps) in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. In the eyes of the elite, who participates more or less actively in their creation according to the socio-political circumstances, this regulation needs to assure the ‘social peace’. The population considered at risk is thus concerned in the first place: craftsmen during the 19th century, and the population of industry workers in the first half of the 20th century.The specificity of this research resides in its micro historical methodology. On the one hand, it investigates individual and collective actors conceiving and managing the regulatory organisms, as well as their life’s course, knowledge and know-how. On the other hand, it enquires the beneficiaries of those organisms, their life routes and the protection strategies they deployed.This work shows that collective protection regulation emancipates from its social environment at the end of the 19th century. This emancipation is both physical and social. At the turning point of the 19th and 20th centuries, the knowledge and know-how of the popular social class are disqualified, to the benefit of a form of objectification of social policies. This objectification, conducted by the new republican elites, is implemented apart from its social terrain and the strategies of social regulation. As of the dawn of the 20th century, the popular classes still participate only marginally in the management of social policies.; Cette thèse traite des formes de régulation sociale mises en œuvre par les acteurs grenoblois au XIXe siècle et au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Pour les élites, qui participent plus ou moins activement à leur élaboration en fonction du contexte sociopolitique, ces formes doivent assurer la « paix sociale ». Ces dernières s’adressent en priorité aux populations qu’ils jugent à risque : les gens de métiers au XIXe siècle, puis les populations ouvrières qualifiées de l’industrie au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. La spécificité de cette recherche réside dans sa démarche microhistorique. Elle s’attache, d’une part, à l’étude des individus et des acteurs collectifs qui conçoivent et administrent les organismes de régulation, à leurs parcours, savoirs et savoir-faire. Elle porte également son attention aux acteurs qui bénéficient de ces organismes, à leurs itinéraires et stratégies de protection. Ce travail montre que la régulation sociale se désencastre de ses milieux d’application à la fin du XIXe siècle. Ce désencastrement est physique et social. Au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, le savoir et le savoir-faire des catégories populaires sont disqualifiés au profit de l’objectivation du social, celle-ci étant jugée plus à même de régler la question sociale. Cette objectivation, conduite par les nouvelles élites républicaines, est réalisée en dehors des terrains d’application des politiques de régulation sociale. Dès le début du XXe siècle, les catégories populaires ne participent plus que marginalement à l’administration du social.

This thesis study the dualism existing on the French labor market. Especially, I study job and worker flows and the role played by temporary contracts in those flows. The employment protection legislation is stringent in France then firms are subject to important rules when they adjust their workforce. However, it seems that the employment legislation governing the use of temporary contracts is not so binding in practice since this type of contract is widely used and that their duration is more and more shorter. In order to have a better knowledge of the French labor market and of the dualism, this thesis is divided in three chapters. The first one quantifies job and worker flows over the 1998-2012 period and explores the possible impact of the 2008 crisis on those flows taking into account industry characteristics. In addition, I study the evolution of contracts' duration and I propose an econometric analysis that highlight the determinants of temporary hirings.The second chapter quantifies transitions existing on the French labor market and their impact on unemployment volatility. I use a three-state (employed, unemployed, inactive) and a four-state model (permanently employed, temporary employed, unemployed, inactive). This latest model has never been studied for the French case yet.Finally, the last chapter analyzes the consequences of the implementation of a tax on short-term contracts that is supposed to encorage firms to hire with permanent contracts and increase the duration of contracts. This kind of reform has been in several european countries. In France, this tax was implemented by the Interprofessional agreement in july 2013. A search and matching model is estimated on French data from UNEDIC using the model proposed by Caguc, Charlot and Malherbet (2016).; L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier le dualisme contractuel existant sur le marché du travail français.Je m'intéresse aux flux ayant lieu sur le marché du travail français en mettant en lumière l'importance des contrats à durée déterminée dans ces flux.La législation française sur la protection de l'emploi semble a priori claire et concise et les entreprises soumises à des règles strictes en ce qui concerne la gestion de leur main d’œuvre.Toutefois, il semblerait qu'en pratique, les contraintes pesant sur les firmes en terme d'utilisation de contrats temporaires ne soient pas si claires et que la vision du contrat à durée indéterminée comme forme ``normale" de relation de travail ne soit pas si évidente pour les firmes.En effet, l'on observe que leur utilisation est très fréquente et concerne des emplois dont la durée est de plus en plus courte. Ce travail de thèse a donc pour objectif de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement du marché du travail français et l'impact du dualisme contractuel. A cette fin, cette thèse est composée de trois chapitres. Le premier chapitreévalue l'ampleur des flux d'emplois et de travailleurs sur la période 1998-2012 en mettant en évidence l'impact de la crise de 2008 sur ces flux ainsi que le potentiel renforcement du dualisme contractuel après cette date.Je tiens compte des spécificités sectorielles en isolant les secteurs autorisés à utiliser les contrats dits d'usage afin d'étudier le comportement des firmes en terme d'embauche dans ces secteurs particuliers.Je détaille également l'évolution de ces flux d'emplois et de travailleurs en fonction de la taille des firmes. De plus, j'étudie l'évolution de la durée des contrats à durée déterminée sur cette même période. Enfin, je mets en œuvre un modèle économétrique visant à mettre en lumière les principaux déterminants de l'embauche en contrat à durée déterminée. Dans le second chapitre, je mesure les transitions d'état à état ayant lieu sur le marché du travail français ainsi que leur impact sur la volatilité du taux de chômage. A cette fin, j'utilise un modèle à trois états (en emploi, au chômage, inactif) ainsi qu'un modèle à quatre états (en contrat à durée indéterminée, en contrat à durée déterminée, au chômage, inactif) permettant de prendre en compte le dualisme contractuel caractérisant beaucoup de marchés du travail européens. Ce type de modèle à quatre états constitue une réelle nouveauté dans le sens où celui-ci n'a jamais été mis en œuvre pour la France. Enfin, le troisième article pour objectif d'analyser les conséquences de l'introduction d'une taxe sur les contrats à durée déterminée dans le but d'inciter les firmes à embaucher davantage en contrat à durée indéterminée et à augmenter la durée des contrats. Cette mesure a récemment été mise en place, sous diverses formes, dans plusieurs pays européens. En ce qui concerne la France, cette taxe a été instaurée par l'Accord National Interprofessionnel signé en 2013.Pour ce faire, un modèle d'appariement est estimé sur des données françaises provenant de l'UNEDIC s'appuyant sur le modèle proposé par Cahuc, Charlot et Malherbet (2016).

The Safran case shows how a new political order is built in a firm around organizational structures based on sociotechnical interdependences and engineers’ professional ideology. This “engineering capitalism” – a notion that explains and characterizes the specific mode of integration at Safran – is linked with the technocratic thought of the French engineering grands corps. It is made economically viable by the shape of the aeronautics market and the kind of competition that takes place within it. It is a means for the top management of the firm to collectively articulate a market strategy and shareholders’ enrollment – including the State as a shareholder – with the internal integration of the enterprise. International audience; This paper presents new facts on firms' internal organization and their export performance. I find an ordering of the distribution of organizations and, both across and within firms, firms' number of layers is positively correlated with their export performance.

International audience; This paper analyses the factors that influence the relative frequency of face-to-face meetings when companies cooperate with each other. Specifically, we explore the role of geographical distance between the partners and how it affects the influence of other factors, especially the nature of knowledge and the ability to use information technology. An econometric analysis based on a survey of 338 companies in the Brittany region (France) shows that the factors that influence the relative frequency of face-to-face encounters differ according to whether the partners are located within or outside a single region. In particular, the nature of knowledge plays a role only when the partners are remote.

This PhD analyses the forms of social protection regulation implemented by local actors in Grenoble (French Alps) in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. In the eyes of the elite, who participates more or less actively in their creation according to the socio-political circumstances, this regulation needs to assure the ‘social peace’. The population considered at risk is thus concerned in the first place: craftsmen during the 19th century, and the population of industry workers in the first half of the 20th century.The specificity of this research resides in its micro historical methodology. On the one hand, it investigates individual and collective actors conceiving and managing the regulatory organisms, as well as their life’s course, knowledge and know-how. On the other hand, it enquires the beneficiaries of those organisms, their life routes and the protection strategies they deployed.This work shows that collective protection regulation emancipates from its social environment at the end of the 19th century. This emancipation is both physical and social. At the turning point of the 19th and 20th centuries, the knowledge and know-how of the popular social class are disqualified, to the benefit of a form of objectification of social policies. This objectification, conducted by the new republican elites, is implemented apart from its social terrain and the strategies of social regulation. As of the dawn of the 20th century, the popular classes still participate only marginally in the management of social policies., Cette thèse traite des formes de régulation sociale mises en œuvre par les acteurs grenoblois au XIXe siècle et au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Pour les élites, qui participent plus ou moins activement à leur élaboration en fonction du contexte sociopolitique, ces formes doivent assurer la « paix sociale ». Ces dernières s’adressent en priorité aux populations qu’ils jugent à risque : les gens de métiers au XIXe siècle, puis les populations ouvrières qualifiées de l’industrie au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. La spécificité de cette recherche réside dans sa démarche microhistorique. Elle s’attache, d’une part, à l’étude des individus et des acteurs collectifs qui conçoivent et administrent les organismes de régulation, à leurs parcours, savoirs et savoir-faire. Elle porte également son attention aux acteurs qui bénéficient de ces organismes, à leurs itinéraires et stratégies de protection. Ce travail montre que la régulation sociale se désencastre de ses milieux d’application à la fin du XIXe siècle. Ce désencastrement est physique et social. This paper studies how exporting firms optimize their inventory management in order to adapt to the uncertainty stemming from demand volatility. We motivate our analysis with a stochastic inventory management framework. We use monthly micro data on French exporters and find that greater uncertainty is associated with lower sales volume. We decompose this effect to its two margins, the number of shipments and average shipment size to find that the number of shipments decreases more quickly as uncertainty increases which is in line with firms adjusting their inventory policy as well as their exported volume as a result of increased uncertainty. Also, uncertainty was found to matter more at distant markets where the uncertainty between firm actions and the arrival of the products is the largest.

International audience; Despite the growing role of Brazil in international trade, exports still face challenges.Following the theoretical framework of Manova (2013), this paper provides firm-level evidence that financial constraints hamper the export performances. Using customs datafrom Brazil, I show through a probability model, that Large firms exhibit more probability to have export performances when compared with Small and Medium-sized firms, and that this advantage tends to decrease in industries with high external funding needs.The sectors financial vulnerability is proxied with two measures borrowed from Rajan and Zingales (1998) and computed for Brazilian industries over the recent period of the 2000s. The results are globally robust to the modification of the proxies of sectoral external finance dependence, used in the literature. Other tests demonstrate that Braziliansubsidiaries have greater chances to be export performant, and that there is a "regional effect" that makes some Brazilian regions export more than others. This paper also provides an insight of the effects of the global crisis of 2008 on the export patterns.

This study analyzes the effect of public R&D subsidies on private R&D expenditure in a sample of French firms during the period 1993-2009. We evaluate whether there is any input additionality of public R&D subsidies by distinguishing between R&D tax credit recipient and non-recipient firms. In addition, combining difference-in-differences with propensity score and exact (both simple and categorical) matching methods, we assess the effect of R&D subsidies between treated (subsidy recipients) and controls (subsidy non-recipients) as well as between differently treated (small, medium and large subsidy recipient) firms. Furthermore, we implement a dose-response matching approach to determine the optimality of public R&D subsidy provisions. We find evidence of either no additionality or substitution effects between public and private R&D expenditure. Crowding-out effects appear to be more pronounced for medium-high levels of public subsidies, and generally under the R&D tax credit regime. This thesis contributes to both theoretical and empirical aspects of the literature on firm heterogeneity in international trade. On the theoretical side, I provide insights of the consequences of trade liberalisation when firms are heterogeneous and countries are asymmetric. On the empirical side, I discuss the causality of the relationship between performances and trading status of firms. Do more productive firms self-select into international markets? Do firms become more productive because they enter international markets? These hypotheses are not mutually exclusive and my work provides support for both of them., Cette thèse contribue à la littérature théorique et empirique concernant l’hétérogénéité des entreprises et le commerce international. La partie théorique analyse les conséquences de la libéralisation du commerce lorsque les entreprises sont hétérogènes et les pays asymétriques. La partie empirique discute le sens de causalité de la relation entre la performance des entreprises et leur statut international. Les entreprises sont-elles plus performantes parce qu’elles exportent et/ou importent ? Ou sont-ce les entreprises les plus performantes qui s’auto-sélectionnent sur le marché international ? Les deux hypothèses ne s’excluent pas mutuellement et ce travail les accrédite toutes deux.

This paper analyzes how firms adjust to differences in market size and demand uncertainty by changing the frequency and size of their export shipments. In our inventory model, transportation costs and optimal shipment frequency are determined on the basis of demand as well as inventory and per shipments costs. Using a cross section of detailed monthly firm-product-destination level French export data we show that, in line with the predictions of the model, firms adjust on both margins for market size. In a stochastic setting, increased demand uncertainty is associated with larger logistics costs as well as a more convex marginal cost function. Firms adjust to increased uncertainty by reducing their sales and, for a given export volume, by reducing their number of shipments and increasing their shipment size. We show that these predictions of the model are in line with patterns in the data.

Schumpeter inaugure en effet une approche de l’innovation en tant que phénomène de nature économique qu’il articule explicitement à une théorie de l’entrepreneur et de l’activité entrepreneuriale. La perspective théorique qu’il développe constitue un héritage dont se réclame un nombre important de travaux consacrés à l’analyse des processus d’innovation et des phénomènes entrepreneuriaux. On commencera donc par rappeler les grandes lignes de l’analyse schumpétérienne de l’entrepreneur innovateur, pour montrer qu’elle oscille entre une conception personnifiée et une conception distribuée de l’innovation. La plupart des tentatives de résolution de cette tension finissent par réduire l’innovation soit à l’essence même d’une écologie des entreprises, soit à une politique publique de la créativité. L’enjeu d’une sociologie des activités entrepreneuriales consiste alors à proposer une conception étendue de l’innovation comme phénomène distribué entre une multitude d’acteurs hétérogènes, afin de comprendre comment émergent dans des configurations spécifiques une variété de figures entrepreneuriales, qu’elles soient individuelles ou collectives.
