Abstract: International audience; This essay addresses transdisciplinarity as a response to the challenges faced in an investigation on theteaching-learning process of Portuguese as a heritage language in France, mediated by the reading of comics(CALDEIRA, 2021). Namely, it conjugates Cognitive Linguistics theories such as Conceptual Integration(FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), categorization and recategorization in L2 (LITTLEMORE, 2015), and IdealizedCognitive Models (LAKOFF, 1987) with psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, and linguisticanthropology. Thanks to the transgression of disciplinarity borders, a methodology of data crystallization wasdeveloped, based on the one proposed by Richardson (2018), in which each element of the corpus acted asone of the facets present in the coconstruction of understandings relative to the research questions.; Este ensaio aborda a transdisciplinaridade propiciada pela Linguística Cognitiva, nomeadamente pelas teorias da Integração Conceptual (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002); categorização e recategorização em L2 (LITTLEMORE, 2015) e Modelos Cognitivos Idealizados (LAKOFF, 1987), como resposta aos desafios enfrentados em uma investigação sobre o processo de ensino-aprendizagem do português como língua de herança na França, mediado pela leitura de histórias em quadrinhos (CALDEIRA, 2021). Graças à conjugação de teorias que conversam com a LC, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia de cristalização de dados, com base no proposto por Richardson (2018), na qual cada elemento do corpus atuou como uma das facetas presentes na coconstrução dos entendimentos gerados na pesquisa.

Abstract: All data presented are available via the invacost R package. Related code and supplementary data available at github.com/cjabradshaw/InvaCostVersionTrends.; International audience; Biological invasions are a global challenge that has received insufficient attention. Recently available cost syntheses have provided policy and decision makers with reliable and up-to-date information on the economic impacts of invasive alien species, aiming to motivate effective management. The resultant InvaCost database is now publicly and freely accessible and enables rapid extraction of monetary cost information globally. This has facilitated knowledge sharing, developed a more integrated and multidisciplinary network of researchers, and forged multidisciplinary collaborations among diverse organisations and stakeholders. Over 50 scientific publications so far have used the database and provided detailed assessments of invasion costs across geographic, taxonomic, and spatio-temporal scales. These studies have been instrumental in guiding policy and legislative decisions, while attracting public and media attention. We provide an overview of the improved availability, reliability, and defragmentation of monetary costs, how this has enhanced invasion science as a discipline, and outline directions for future development

Abstract: Supplemental material for this article can be accessed here: https://doi.org/10.1080/14772000.2022.2130464; International audience; Determining the relative importance of dispersal and vicariance events across neotropical regions is a major goal in biogeography. These events are thought to be related to important landscape changes, notably the transition of Amazonia toward its modern hydrological configuration ca. 10 million years ago. We investigated the spatio-temporal context of the diversification of one of the major lineages of Pristimantis, a widespread and large genus of direct-developing Neotropical frogs. We gathered a spatially and taxonomically extensive sampling of mitochondrial DNA sequences from 754 Pristimantis gr. conspicillatus specimens, which led to delimiting 75 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs). Complete mitogenomes of 35 of these OTUs were assembled and collated with two nuDNA loci to reconstruct a time-calibrated phylogeny. We identified five major clades that diverged around the Oligocene-Miocene transition and that are largely restricted to distinct Neotropical regions i.e. Western Amazonia (P. conspicillatus clade), the Brazilian Shield (P. fenestratus clade), the Atlantic Forest (P. ramagii clade), the Guiana Shield (P. vilarsi clade) and the northern Andes (P. nicefori clade). The majority of the diversification events within these clades occurred in-situ from the early Miocene onward. Yet, a few ancient dispersal/vicariance events are inferred to have occurred among trans-Andean forests, the Atlantic Forest, the Brazilian and the Guiana Shields, but almost none in the last 10 Ma. The radical landscape transformations during the Miocene caused by the Andean orogeny and hydrological barriers such as the Pebas System and the subsequent transcontinental configuration of the Amazon drainage is a likely explanation for the isolation of the different clades within the P. gr. conspicillatus.

Abstract: International audience; Efficiently exploiting computational resources in heterogeneous platforms is a real challenge which has motivated the adoption of the task-based programming paradigm where resource usage is dynamic and adaptive. Unfortunately, classical performance visualization techniques used in routine performance analysis often fail to provide any insight in this new context, especially when the application structure is irregular. In this paper, we propose several performance visualization techniques and modeling strategies motivated by the analysis of task-based multifrontal sparse linear solvers whose structure is particularly complex. We show that by building on both a performance model of irregular tasks and on structure of the application (in particular the elimination tree), we can detect and highlight anomalies and understand resource utilization from the application point-of-view in a very insightful way. We validate these novel performance analysis techniques with the QR_mumps sparse parallel solver by describing a series of case studies where we identify and address non trivial performance issues thanks to our visualization methodology.

Abstract: International audience; Conducting polymers have been used as support for catalysts towards distinct electrocatalytic reactions. The overall activity of the modified interfaces critically depends on both the processes on the catalyst surface and of the charge compensation within the polymer matrix. Therefore, understand the coupling between surface and volumetric processes in such systems is of utmost importance. In this contribution we report on the experimental investigation of the interplay between surface and volumetric processes during the electrooxidation of formic acid (and also formaldehyde) on platinum modified polyaniline electrodes. The study was performed through in situ nanogravimetry, with the Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Nanobalance (EQCN). We have explored the dynamics of charge and mass changes along several experimental conditions, including the self-organized potential oscillations. The systematic study included the analysis of several configurations: gold electrodes covered with a PANI film and dispersed platinum (Au/PANI/Pt); platinum electrodes covered with PANI (Pt/PANI); and bare platinum electrodes. The methodology introduced includes the detailed analysis of the charge compensation process and of the time-derivative of the mass variations. Typical results for the electro-oxidation of formic acid on PANI supported platinum indicate that the electrocatalysis itself is reflected in the current profile, whereas the charge compensation rules the gravimetric response. This general observation also holds for the oscillatory electro-oxidation of formic acid. The physicochemical description of the support/catalyst systems described here opens interesting perspectives for the investigation of parent systems.

Abstract: The thesis presents how food has been studied in geography based on two authors who intensively dedicated themselves to this theme: Josué de Castro and Max Sorre. Josué de Castro is a Brazilian doctor and geographer who from the 1940s onwards has effectively studied hunger based on his research on food. Max Sorre is a classical geographer of French nationality and heir of the ideas of Paul Vidal de la Blache, who wrote “The Fundamentals of Human Geography” among other works. Sorre ended his geographical studies with “Man on Earth: treatise on human geography”, inserting food and food geography in several of his studies, as well as hunger in continuation of Josué de Castro. Based on documentary research, bibliographical reading and interviews, we show the importance of the theme of food, especially in a time that precedes the revolution of information and communication technologies, the Green Revolution and the post-Cold War era marked by a significant increase in food production and global paradigm shifts. We defend the need for proper interdisciplinarity, and the humanization of the human sciences defended by these two humanist geographers. Our main objective is to share the contributions of Josué de Castro and Max Sorre in order to better understand the issues they observed and analyzed as well as their influence after their death. We conclude that the theme of food and hunger remains prominent and requires efforts to eliminate the scourge already denounced by Castro in the first three quarters of the 20th century and that continues to devastate, in an absolute and hidden way, a large part of humanity.; La thèse présente comment l’alimentation a été étudiée en géographie, à partir de deux auteurs qui se sont intensément consacrés à ce thème : Josué de Castro et Max Sorre. Josué de Castro est un docteur et géographe brésilien qui, à partir des années 1940, a effectivement étudié la faim à la lumière de ses études sur l’alimentation. Le second est un géographe classique de nationalité française et héritier des idées de Paul Vidal de la Blache, auteur entre autres de « Les Fondamentaux de la géographie humaine ». Sorre a conclu ses études géographiques par « L’Homme sur la Terre : traité de géographie humaine », insérant la nourriture et la géographie de l’alimentation dans plusieurs de ses études, ainsi que la question de la faim introduite au monde scientifique par Josué de Castro. À partir de recherches documentaires, de lectures bibliographiques et d’entretiens, nous montrons l’importance du thème de l’alimentation, surtout à une époque qui précède la révolution des technologies de l’information et de la communication, la Révolution verte et la période d’après-guerre froide, marquée par une augmentation significative de la production alimentaire et par des changements de paradigmes globaux. Nous défendons la nécessité d’une véritable interdisciplinarité et d’une humanisation des sciences humaines, défendue également par ces deux géographes humanistes. Notre objectif principal est de partager les contributions de Josué de Castro et de Max Sorre afin de mieux comprendre les problèmes qu’ils ont observés et analysés ainsi que la continuation de leurs idées après leur mort. Nous concluons que le thème reste d’actualité et nécessite des efforts pour éliminer le fléau déjà dénoncé par Castro dans les trois premiers quarts du XXe siècle, et qui continue de dévaster, de manière absolue et cachée, une grande partie de l’humanité.; A tese apresenta como a alimentação foi estudada na geografia, a partir dos dois autores que se dedicaram intensivamente a esse tema: Josué de Castro e Max. Sorre. O primeiro é o brasileiro que, a partir da década de 1940, estuda efetivamente a fome, depois dos seus estudos sobre alimentação. O segundo é o geógrafo clássico, de nacionalidade francesa, e herdeiro das ideias de Paul Vidal de la Blache, que escreveu “Os Fundamentos da Geografia Humana”, entre outras obras, finalizando seus estudos geográficos com “O Homem na Terra: tratado da geografia humana”, inserindo a alimentação, a geografia da alimentação em diversos de seus estudos, e a fome apresentada ao mundo científico por Josué de Castro. A partir de pesquisa documental, de leitura bibliográfica e de entrevistas, mostramos a importância do tema da alimentação, sobretudo numa época que antecede a revolução das tecnologias de informação e comunicação, a Revolução Verde e o pós-Guerra Fria, marcada por aumento significativo da produção alimentícia e a mudança global, com rupturas de paradigmas. Defendemos a necessidade da verdadeira interdisciplinaridade e a humanização das ciências humanas, também defendidas pelos dois geógrafos, humanistas. Nosso objetivo principal é compartilhar as contribuições de Josué de Castro e Max. Sorre para entendermos melhor as problemáticas observadas e analisadas por Castro e o que aconteceu após sua morte. Concluímos que o tema permanece atual e requer empenho para eliminação do flagelo já denunciado por Castro nos três primeiros quartis do século XX, e que continuam a assolar de forma absoluta e oculta grande parte da humanidade.

Abstract: International audience; Aspergillus fumigatus is a major opportunistic fungal pathogen of immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. To successfully establish an infection, A. fumigatus needs to use host carbon sources, such as acetate, present in the body fluids and peripheral tissues. However, utilization of acetate as a carbon source by fungi in the context of infection has not been investigated. This work shows that acetate is metabolized via different pathways in A. fumigatus and that acetate utilization is under the regulatory control of a transcription factor (TF), FacB. A. fumigatus acetate utilization is subject to carbon catabolite repression (CCR), although this is only partially dependent on the TF and main regulator of CCR CreA. The available extracellular carbon source, in this case glucose and acetate, significantly affected A. fumigatus virulence traits such as secondary metabolite secretion and cell wall composition, with the latter having consequences for resistance to oxidative stress, antifungal drugs, and human neutrophil-mediated killing. Furthermore, deletion of facB significantly impaired the in vivo virulence of A. fumigatus in both insect and mammalian models of invasive aspergillosis. This is the first report on acetate utilization in A. fumigatus, and this work further highlights the importance of available host-specific carbon sources in shaping fungal virulence traits and subsequent disease outcome, and a potential target for the development of antifungal strategies.IMPORTANCE Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic fungal pathogen in humans. During infection, A. fumigatus is predicted to use host carbon sources, such as acetate, present in body fluids and peripheral tissues, to sustain growth and promote colonization and invasion. This work shows that A. fumigatus metabolizes acetate via different pathways, a process that is dependent on the transcription factor FacB. Furthermore, the type and concentration of the extracellular available carbon source were determined to shape A. fumigatus virulence determinants such as secondary metabolite secretion and cell wall composition. Subsequently, interactions with immune cells are altered in a carbon source-specific manner. FacB is required for A. fumigatus in vivo virulence in both insect and mammalian models of invasive aspergillosis. This is the first report that characterizes acetate utilization in A. fumigatus and highlights the importance of available host-specific carbon sources in shaping virulence traits and potentially subsequent disease outcome.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-08-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Microstructural and magnetic characterizations of YBa2Cu3O7-δ nanowire fabric-like samples were performed. Fabric-like ceramic superconductors are nanoporous materials and can be applied, e.g., in magnetic shielding, since the porous morphology makes them extremely light-weight and effectively to be cooled. The samples were produced by the solution blow spinning (SBS) technique, starting from a sol-gel solution of the precursor materials in polyvinyl-alcohol. The morphology of the samples was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction with the aim to analyze the possible current paths. The magnetic hysteresis loops revealed typical polycrystalline behavior, and field-cooling in various small applied fields shows the presence of the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), but in a distinctly different way as compared to melt-texured Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ or Nb. Abstract: International audience; The duration of the life cycle in deep neural networks (DNN) depends on the data configuration decisions that lead to success in obtaining models. Analyzing hyperparameters along the evolution of the network's execution allows for adapting the data. Provenance data derivation traces help the parameter fine-tuning by providing a global data picture with clear dependencies. Provenance can also contribute to the interpretation of models resulting from the DNN life cycle. However, there are challenges in collecting hyperparameters and in modeling the relationships between the data involved in the DNN life cycle to build a provenance database. Current approaches adopt different notions of provenance in their representation and require the execution of the DNN under a specific software framework, which limits interoperability and flexibility when choosing the DNN execution environment. This work presents a provenance data-based approach to address these challenges, proposing a collection mechanism with flexibility in the choice and representation of data to be analyzed. Experiments of the approach, using a convolutional neural network focused on image recognition, provide evidence of the flexibility, the efficiency of data collection, the analysis and the validation of network data.

Abstract: Resistive switching (RS) devices are promising forms of non-volatile memory. However, one of the biggest challenges for RS memory applications is the device-to-device (D2D) variability, which is related to the intrinsic stochastic formation and configuration of oxygen vacancy (VO) conductive filaments (CFs). In order to reduce the D2D variability, control over the formation and configuration of oxygen vacancies is paramount. In this study, we report on the Zr doping of TaO x -based RS devices prepared by pulsed-laser deposition as an efficient means of reducing the VO formation energy and increasing the confinement of CFs, thus reducing D2D variability. Our findings were supported by XPS, spectroscopic ellipsometry and electronic transport analysis. Zr-doped films showed increased VO concentration and more localized VOs, due to the interaction with Zr. DC and pulse mode electrical characterization showed that the D2D variability was decreased by a factor of seven, the resistance window was doubled, and a more gradual and monotonic long-term potentiation/depression in pulse switching was achieved in forming-free Zr:TaO x devices, thus displaying promising performance for artificial synapse applications.

Abstract: International audience; Place recognition is an essential task in many robotics applications. Recognizing if the robot is crossing an already visited place may be used to improve its localization and map estimation. A place recognition strategy must be as accurate as possible, despite the challenges related to environment dynamicity. It should avoid generating false positives since even a few erroneous matches may be enough to cause the degradation of the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) process. We propose a novel approach for place recognition inspired by interval analysis theory. Our approach models the known world as a set of intervals based on the robot’s observations. The search to determine whether the current robot location is new or known begins as the robot explores its surroundings. Our approach has three main steps. First, it selects a set of nearest neighbors based on the similarity between the current robot observation and the intervals composing the known world. In the second step, our approach uses temporal constraints to select one element of the set. And finally, the third step is to sweep the selected interval looking for the query best match. We evaluate our proposal by dealing with visual place recognition using only image information and demonstrate its effectiveness using some challenging public datasets.

Abstract: International audience; p-Cresyl sulfate (PCS), indoxyl sulfate (IS), and inorganic phosphate (Pi) are uremic toxins found in chronic kidney disease (CKD) that are closely related to endothelial extracellular vesicles (EVs) formation. The present study aimed to understand the role of EVs and their role in cell adhesion and migration, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Human endothelial cells were treated with PCS, IS, and Pi in pre-established uremic and kinetic recommendations. EVs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and NanoSight assays. The concentrations of EVs were established using Alamar Blue and MTT assays. Cell adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins was analyzed using an adhesion assay. Inflammation and oxidative stress were assessed by vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression/monocyte migration and reactive oxygen species production, respectively. The capacity of EVs to stimulate endothelial cell migration was evaluated using a wound-healing assay. Our data showed that endothelial cells stimulated with uremic toxins can induce the formation of EVs of different sizes, quantities, and concentrations, depending on the uremic toxin used. Cell adhesion was significantly (P < 0.01) stimulated in cells exposed to PCS-induced extracellular vesicles (PCSEVs) and inorganic phosphate-induced extracellular vesicles (PiEVs). Cell migration was significantly (P < 0.05) stimulated by PCSEVs. VCAM-1 expression was evident in cells treated with PCSEVs and IS-induced extracellular vesicles (ISEVs). EVs are not able to stimulate monocyte migration or oxidative stress. In conclusion, EVs may be a biomarker of endothelial injury and the inflammatory process, playing an important role in cell-to-cell communication and pathophysiological processes, although more studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms of EVs in uremia.

Abstract: Leishmania infantum causes visceral leishmaniasis, a deadly vector-borne disease introduced to the Americas during the colonial era. This non-native trypanosomatid parasite has since established widespread transmission cycles using alternative vectors, and human infection has become a significant concern to public health, especially in Brazil. A multi-kilobase deletion was recently detected in Brazilian L. infantum genomes and is suggested to reduce susceptibility to the anti-leishmanial drug miltefosine. We show that deletion-carrying strains occur in at least 15 Brazilian states and describe diversity patterns suggesting that these derive from common ancestral mutants rather than from recurrent independent mutation events. We also show that the deleted locus and associated enzymatic activity is restored by hybridization with non-deletion type strains. Genetic exchange appears common in areas of secondary contact but also among closely related parasites. We examine demographic and ecological scenarios underlying this complex L. infantum population structure and discuss implications for disease control., Philipp Schwabl, Mariana Boité, and colleagues analyze 126 Leishmania infantum genomes to determine how demographic and selective consequences of the parasite’s invasive history have contributed to intricate population genetic heterogeneity across Brazil. Their data suggest a complex interplay of population expansion, secondary contact and genetic exchange events underlying diversity patterns at short and long-distance scales. These processes also appear pivotal to the proliferation of a drug resistance-associated multi-gene deletion on chromosome 31.

Abstract: International audience; Brazil is one of the largest consumers of pesticides in the world, and these chemicals present a high contamination risk for the country’s water bodies. The mechanisms of mobilization and transport of pesticides from cropland to river systems are controlled by runoff and erosion processes occurring at the catchment scale. In addition to the excessive use of pesticides, the transport processes of these substances are also accelerated by inadequate soil management and the absence of soil conservation measures at the catchment scale. The current research relied on hydrological monitoring to investigate the transport and persistence of pesticides in response to hydrological dynamics. The study was conducted in the Conceição River watershed where runoff and suspended sediment fluxes are continuously monitored at the outlet. This study area is representative of the grain production system in southern Brazil including the application of large amounts of pesticides combined with extensive runoff and erosion problems. Sample collection in the river for pesticide analysis included the analysis of both water and suspended sediment. The sediment deposit analysis was performed in a single location at 4 depths. Results demonstrate the occurrence of pesticides including simazine, 2,4-D, carbendazim, imidacloprid, tebuconazole, propiconazole, tetraconazole, and trifloxystrobin in water, while glyphosate and AMPA were detected in suspended sediments, and AMPA and carbendazim were found in sediment deposits. The study demonstrated the strong dependence of the mechanisms of pesticide mobilization and transport in the catchment with the intra- and interevent variability of hydro-sedimentary processes. Pesticide detections can be related to several factors, including the magnitude of the rainfall event, the period of pesticide application, or the transport of suspended sediment. All these factors are correlated, and the mechanisms of transportation play an important role in the connections between sink and sources. The results suggest that pesticide monitoring should take into account the runoff and erosion pathways in each particular catchment, and it should especially include the monitoring of major rainfall events for identifying and quantifying the occurrence of pesticides in the environment. The transport of pesticides indicates to be potentiated by intensive pesticide use, the magnitude of rainfall-runoff events, and the absence of runoff control measures (e.g., terracing). These results demonstrate that water and soil conservation techniques should be planned and coordinated at the watershed scale to reduce the connectivity of water and sediment flows from agricultural areas to river systems with the implementation of effective runoff control practices. This will control the mobilization agents (runoff), as well as limit the connection between the sources and the water bodies.

Abstract: International audience; Nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO) have gained broad attention due to their roles in several physiological and pathophysiological processes. Remarkably, these sibling species can exhibit opposing effects including the promotion of angiogenic activity by NO compared to HNO, which blocks neovascularization. While many NO donors have been developed over the years, interest in HNO has led to the recent emergence of new donors. However, in both cases there is an expressive lack of iron-based compounds. Herein, we explored the novel chemical reactivity and stability of the trans-[Fe(cyclam)(NO)Cl]Cl2 (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) complex. Interestingly, the half-life (t1/2) for NO release was 1.8 min upon light irradiation, vs 5.4 h upon thermal activation at 37 °C. Importantly, spectroscopic evidence supported the generation of HNO rather than NO induced by glutathione. Moreover, we observed significant inhibition of NO donor- or hypoxia-induced HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1α) accumulation in breast cancer cells, as well as reduced vascular tube formation by endothelial cells pretreated with the trans-[Fe(cyclam)(NO)Cl]Cl2 complex. Together, these studies provide the first example of an iron-nitrosyl complex with anti-angiogenic activity as well as the potential dual activity of this compound as a NO/HNO releasing agent, which warrants further pharmacological investigation.

Abstract: The melon belongs to the family of commercially important cucurbitaceous in the world. However, the production of this crop can be very problematic in some places due to management practices and the climatic instability. Amongst the different options available to overcome these obstacles, the use of biochar often promoted for providing multiple benefits to crops, could contribute in holding more water and nutrients in soil and therefore improve the plant growth. A second way to try to improve the plant development was to use Trichoderma (TRI) known as aiding in seed germination, and being an excellent biological control agent against plant pathogenic pests. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of the association of biochar and TRI on the initial growth of melon and the effects on the quality of a sandy Entisol. We quantified the effects of these associations through biometric growth in melon plants and chemical, microbial, and enzymatic activities of the biogeochemical cycles in the soil. An experiment in a completely of randomized design was performed in a factorial scheme (3 x 2 + 1) with three sources of biochar (bean husk (BH), coffee ground (CG), and coffee husk (CH)) inoculated with (T+) or without (T-) TRI and additional controls When the coffee grounds (CG) and bean husks (BH) biochar with T+ soil was inoculated, the fresh weight (number of leaves), dry weight, length (of roots and branch), soil acid and alkaline phosphatase, total organic carbon, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and pH were all increased. Moreover, T. aureoviride inoculated CG biochar compared to the control increased the shoot length and dry biomass of the melon plant in 30 and 22% between 22 and 30 %. The soil that received coffee husks (CH) biochar and T+ showed higher microbial biomass carbon. However, the melon plants responded more to the type of biochar than to the T. aureoviride inoculation, possibly due to the short growth time of melon. Results of BH biochar inoculated with T. aureviride in sandy soil showed improved efficiency on melon growth and increased soil quality.

Abstract: International audience; A bioadsorbent (CEDA) capable of adsorbing As(V) and Cu(II) simultaneously was prepared by tosylation of microcrystalline cellulose (MC) and nucleophilic substitution of the tosyl group by ethylenediamine. MC, tosyl cellulose, and CEDA were characterized by elemental C, H, N, and S analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The adsorption of As(V) and Cu(II) on CEDA was evaluated as a function of solution pH, contact time, and initial solute concentration. The maximum adsorption capacities of CEDA for As(V) and Cu(II) were 1.62 and 1.09 mmol g−1, respectively. The interactions of As(V) and Cu(II) with CEDA were elucidated using thermodynamic parameters, molecular quantum mechanics calculations, and experiments with ion exchange of Cd(II) by Cu(II), and As(V) by SO4 2−. Adsorption enthalpies were determined as a function of surface coverage of the CEDA, using isothermal titration calorimetry, with ΔadsH° values of −32.24 ± 0.07 and −93 ± 2 kJ mol−1 obtained for As(V) and Cu(II), respectively. The potential to reuse CEDA was evaluated and the interference of other ions in the adsorption of As(V) and Cu(II) was investigated. Multi-component experiments showed that Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) did not interfere in the adsorption of Cu(II), while SO4 2− inhibited As(V) adsorption.

Abstract: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare disease among children. Our goal was to identify prognostic biomarkers in 48 primary ACCs from children (2.83 &plusmn, 2.3 y, mean age &plusmn, SD) by evaluating the tumor stage and outcome for an age of diagnosis before or after 3 years, and association with ACC cluster of differentiation 8 positive (CD8+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8+-CTL) and Ki-67 immunohistochemical expression (IHC). Programmed death 1(PD-1)/Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemistry (IHC) in ACC was analyzed in a second, partially overlapping cohort (N = 19) with a similar mean age. All patients and control children were carriers of the germline TP53 R337H mutation. Survival without recurrence for less than 3 years and death unrelated to disease were excluded. Higher counts of CD8+-CTL were associated with patients diagnosed with ACC at a younger age and stage I, whereas a higher percentage of the Ki-67 labeling index (LI) and Weiss scores did not differentiate disease free survival (DFS) in children younger than 3 years old. No PD-1 staining was observed, whereas weakly PD-L1-positive immune cells were found in 4/19 (21%) of the ACC samples studied. A high CD8+-CTL count in ACC of surviving children is compelling evidence of an immune response against the disease. A better understanding of the options for enhancement of targets for CD8+ T cell recognition may provide insights for future pre-clinical studies.
