After the financial crisis of 2008 and with the emergence of blockchain technologies, several alternative currencies were experimented. Among them, the bitcoin is today the most famous and has the largest capitalization but it does not seem to be a relevant solution for a more desirable future. However, it is possible to use the technology behind the Bitcoin, the blockchain, to offer more virtuous monetary alternatives and some experimentations can be assimilated as commons in the way of Ostrom (1990) and work for the common good. Our latest research (Malafosse et al. 2022, forthcoming), which aimed to better understand the conditions under which blockchain technologies could support the commons, enabled us to study the cryptocurrency Ğ1 community. Based on the result of this case study, we wish to question the money creation as a commons, drawing on the literature on currencies. More specifically, we put forward in this essay a new denomination for this collaborative practice: common-based peer universal dividend production., Après la crise financière de 2008, plusieurs monnaies alternatives ont fait l’objet d’expérimentations.

International audience; Nowadays, some smart cities are criticised for their very techno-centric vision that favours digital giants over local citizens. In Barcelona, a completely different strategy has been deployed, turning the city into an experimental city model. Based on the theoretical foundation of the commons (Ostrom, 1990), the municipality has launched a digital strategy that involves citizens in addressing the challenges of digital sovereignty and asserting their digital rights. Thus, this article questions how decentralised digital tools, based on blockchain technology, can promote data sharing while respecting the privacy and rights of citizens. The theory of the commons is used to support the governance of the data commons at the city scale.; Certaines smart cities sont aujourd’hui critiquées pour leur vision très techno-centrée qui favorise les géants du numérique face aux citoyens locaux.

International audience; Forests are at the center of many of the issues involved in coping with global changes. On the one hand it seems necessary to exploit them more intensively to produce biomass to replace productswith a strong impact on the climate, on the other hand it seems necessary to preserve them much more in order to protect the large part of biodiversity they host as well as their role as carbon sinks. The tension between these two seemingly contradictory expectations is the subject of intense debates, which is particularly lively at present in France. Based on the same data, but with differenthypotheses, several scenarios have attempted to assess the consequences of the two orientations. Their results are not clearly enough contrasted to favour one scenario in particular. To overcome thisdifficulty, we believe that 3 new dimensions should be introduced into the analyses. 1) the territorial dimension to better consider local specificities (resources, demands and constraints); 2) the riskdimension to consider the impacts of global changes and the weight of risks in investment options, especially in the very long term; 3) the social dimension to promote better shared collective decisionmakingconducive to better environmental justice inclusive of a diversity of actors. The presentation defines these 3 dimensions and what they imply in prospective approaches.

International audience; The rise of the internet and peer-to-peer networks have fostered the formation of communities around new collective projects that bring Ostrom's (1990) work on the commons back to the forefront. In this perspective, a new field of specific research suggests that blockchain technology can support commons governance. Studies are still rare and remain very theoretical. The objective of this article is to study the actual use of this technology in the process of commoning. To do so, this paper relies on the case study of the Ğ1 French free currency. Our results detail the governance arrangements of a new type of commons developed by members of the French free currency Ğ1: the socio-technical system of money creation. In doing so, this case highlights the attributes of the Duniter blockchain specifically developed for the needs of the Ğ1 ecosystem. It also outlines the role of the blockchain in supporting the self-organization and the bundles of rights that members have put in place to allocate the universal dividend by commoning.; L’essor d’internet et des réseaux pair-à-pair ont favorisé la constitution de communautés autour de nouveaux projets collectifs qui remettent au premier plan les travaux sur les communs d’Ostrom (1990).

Intratumoral injection of biocompatible gels is increasingly used for the sustained delivery of drugs and vaccines to enhance the anti-cancer immune response. Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has become an attractive adjuvant thanks to its ability to boost the antitumor immune response by inducing proliferation, maturation and migration of the dendritic-cells (DCs) and the differentiation of lymphocytes. Killed Mycobacteria, such as Heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis (HKMT) have been used in several studies as TLR-2 agonist to increase maturation of DCs. In this study, we designed a mucoadhesive thermosensitive formulation for the local delivery of GM-CSF and HKMT in order to enhance DCs activation and improve the local antitumor immune response. This formulation was selected based on its elastic and mucoadhesive properties obtained thanks to rheological studies. More importantly, intratumoral residence time of the labelled gel and protein were evidenced by means of MRI and non invasive in vivo optical imaging. Then, the efficacy of the combination of immunomodulators loaded thermogel was demonstated in vitro and in vivo. The selected thermogel exhibits rheological properties which confer a good elasticity and increased residence time of the immunostimulatory agents in the tumor, thus increasing the recruitment of DCs and T cytotoxic CD8+ lymphocytes.

Introduction : The pharmaceutical industry is omnipresent during the medical training program of doctors and it influences medical prescriptions. The objective of this work is to understand if general medical students feel free or influenced during their meetings with the pharmaceutical industry. Method : A qualitative study led with general medicine students located in the Indian Ocean, by means of semi-directed conversations and a group interview. Their analysis was made according to the grounded theory method of qualitative analysis using the SONAL software. Results : 13 medical students participated in the study. With regards to the main question posed in the study, the interns often felt that the meetings were pressured upon them, or by themselves. These encounters took place mainly at the hospital, during staffs meetings but also during outpatient training via medical visitors. They felt that their training in independence was insufficient to allow them to have more freedom. Discussion : Medical student do not always feel free to meet with the pharmaceutical industry, mainly due to hierarchical pressure and lack of training. To remedy this would require the elaboration of a charter on independence with regards to the pharmaceutical industry destined for the university master course of La Réunion/ Mayotte and a training of students according to the Pharfree curriculum model of AMSA with an evaluation of these measures on the feeling of the medical students and the economic medical consequences of their actions.; Introduction : L’industrie pharmaceutique est omniprésente dans le cursus de médecine.

Rewarded at Laval Virtual 2014, the AccesSim project aims to develop a wheelchair simulator based on Virtual Reality (VR) and a dynamic force‐feedback platform, which allows to experience and to evaluate the accessibility in complex urban or property environment. In order to address this issue, the dynamic force-feedback platform should provide haptic and vestibular feedback to various user profiles: from town‐planners to wheelchair users. The platform needs to be modular and adjustable to each of these profiles. This article focuses on the dynamic force‐feedback platform and specifically on the force‐feedback systems used. BackgroundExtremely high rates of suicide localized within subgroups of populations where suicide is rare have been reported. We investigated this intriguing observation in a population of South-East Asia, where local culture should theoretically be preventative of suicide.MethodA team including an anthropologist and a psychiatrist surveyed all cases of suicide that had occurred over 10 years in four isolated regions. A psychological autopsy was carried out comparing each suicide case with two matched control cases.ResultsIn a region of 1192 inhabitants, 16 suicides occurred, leading to an annual suicide rate of 134/1 000 00 which is 10 times the rate in the USA or Canada. By contrast, three ethnically similar distant communities showed low to null rates. The gender ratio was three males to one female and two-thirds of cases were aged below 35 years. Methods of suicide were poisoning and hanging and motives mainly included interpersonal discord. The pattern of developmental and clinical risk factors was somewhat different from Western countries, showing no childhood maltreatment, only one case of alcohol/substance abuse and impulsive–aggressive personality but elevated rates of social anxiety. Suicide cases had very high frequencies of second-degree biological relatives who committed suicide.ConclusionsOur study confirms a persistent phenomenon of high suicide rates restricted to a subgroup of a pre-industrialized population. We hypothesized this might be explained by isolation and endogamy, which may have promoted the selection/amplification of genetic vulnerability factors, or a contagion effect. These findings shed light on suicide from both a singular and a universal perspective, suggesting that particular local conditions may significantly modulate the rate of this complex behavior.

International audience; Implication of immune processes in bipolar disorder (BD) has recently gained increasing attention. Tolerogenic molecules, among which HLA-G plays a prominent role, mediate the modulation of such processes. The HLA-G locus is characterized by a high number of polymorphisms including a functionally relevant 14 base pair (bp) insertion/deletion (Ins/Del) allele affecting the HLA-G expression. Here, we analyzed the distribution of this polymorphism in 561 BD patients and 161 healthy and found that the HLA-G 14bp Ins/Ins genotype was significantly more prevalent in healthy controls than in patients (corrected p; pc=0.032) and that the prevalence of such protective genotype is lower among patients born during the winter season as compared to those born in other periods (pc=0.006). Possible mechanisms between low HLA G expression and resistance to infections as well as potential relationships between infections in early life and susceptibility to BD are discussed.

International audience; Decision-making impairment is found in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including suicidal behavior, and has been shown to be modulated by genes. On the other hand, early trauma have/has been associated with poor mental health outcome in adulthood, in interaction with genetic factors, possibly through sustained alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of childhood trauma and its interaction with HPA-axis related genes on decision-making abilities in adulthood among a sample of suicide attempters. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was used to assess decision-making in 218 patients with a history of suicide attempt. Participant fulfilled the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire to report traumatic childhood experiences. Patients were genotyped for single-nucleotide polymorphisms within CRHR1 and CRHR2 genes. Patients with a history of sexual abuse had significantly lower IGT scores than non-sexually abused individuals. Polymorphisms within CRHR1 and CRHR2 genes interacted with both childhood sexual abuse and emotional neglect to influence IGT performance. In conclusion, childhood sexual abuse and emotional neglect may have long-term effects on decision-making through an interaction with key HPA axis genes. Even if these results need to be replicated in other sample, impaired decision-making may thus be the dimension through which child maltreatment, in interaction with HPA axis related genes, may have a sustained negative impact on adult mental health.

International audience; Nestling sexing by biometric and molecular analysis in two diurnal raptors. The following data were collected during a long term study in France of the Common Buzzard Buteo buteo and the Short-toed Eagle Circaetus gallicus. Even though females of these two species are significantly larger than males, biometric parameters show substantial overlaps between sexes, so that in-hand sexing from morphometrics alone can be hazardous. Therefore, we have been looking for a reliable method of sexing nestlings, based on discriminant analysis of measurements, computed between groups of DNA determined males and females. In this paper, we give simple (linear) functions of a few parameters, allowing the prediction of the sex of a good proportion of the juveniles: Roughly 85% of Short-toed Eagle nestlings, older than 40 days (wing-length > 170mm), and 90% of Common Buzzard nestlings, from the age of 4 weeks (wing-length > 205mm), can be sexed correctly.

International audience; BACKGROUND: Corpus callosum (CC) size has been associated with cognitive and emotional deficits in a range of neuropsychiatric and mood disorders. As such deficits are also found in suicidal behavior, we investigated specifically the association between CC atrophy and suicidal behavior. METHODS: We studied 435 right-handed individuals without dementia from a cohort of community-dwelling persons aged 65 years and over (the ESPRIT study). They were divided in three groups: suicide attempters (n = 21), affective control subjects (AC) (n = 180) without history of suicide attempt but with a history of depression, and healthy control subjects (HC) (n = 234). T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were traced to measure the midsagittal areas of the anterior, mid, and posterior CC. Multivariate analysis of covariance was used to compare CC areas in the three groups. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses adjusted for age, gender, childhood trauma, head trauma, and total brain volume showed that the area of the posterior third of CC was significantly smaller in suicide attempters than in AC (p = .020) and HC (p = .010) individuals. No significant differences were found between AC and HC. No differences were found for the anterior and mid thirds of the CC. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings emphasize a reduced size of the posterior third of the CC in subjects with a history of suicide, suggesting a diminished interhemispheric connectivity and a possible role of CC in the pathophysiology of suicidal behavior. Further studies are needed to strengthen these results and clarify the underlying cellular changes leading to these morphometric differences.

BackgroundIn 1962 approximately 1.5 million French people living in Algeria were repatriated to France in very poor and often life-threatening conditions. These people constitute a cohort for the study of the long-term impact of gene–environment interaction on depression.AimsTo examine the interaction between a highly stressful life event and subsequent depression, and its modulation by a length polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene (5–HTTLPR).MethodA community sample of people aged 65 years and over residing in the Montpellier region of the south of France was randomly recruited from electoral rolls. Genotyping was performed on 248 repatriated persons and 632 controls. Current and lifetime major and minor depressive disorders were assessed according to DSM-IV criteria.ResultsA significant relationship was observed between exposure to repatriation and subsequent depression (PP = 0.62). After controlling for age, gender, education, disability, recent life events and cognitive function, the gene–environment interaction (repatriation×5-HTTLPR) was globally significant (PPPP = 0.067).ConclusionsThe association between depression and war repatriation was significantly modulated by 5-HTTLPR genotype but this appeared to occur only in people who were younger at the time of exposure.

International audience; Objective: Clinical studies suggest that childhood maltreatment may cause nervous system changes and consequent cognitive disorder. The persistence of this association in late-life is examined. Methods: Cognitive functioning and childhood events were examined in 1282 persons over 65 years, taking into account proximal competing causes of poor cognitive performance. Results: 91 % of participants experienced at least one adverse childhood event, of these 14.7 % severe events. Sharing of parental problems and, for women, loss of a parent, were associated with poorer verbal retrieval whereas being sent to a foster home or mistreatment by schoolmates was associated with poorer visuospatial memory. Severe abuse was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment on some tests suggesting a resilience factor. Positive childhood environment was protective although only for non-carriers of the ApoE epsilon4 allele on the central executive task. Conclusions: Some adverse childhood events continue to have a negative effect on later-life cognitive performance, while some more severe acute events may have the opposite effect, underlying the necessity to consider events individually and not as global test scores.

International audience; BACKGROUND: In spite of the high prevalence of suicide behaviours and the magnitude of the resultant burden, little is known about why individuals reattempt. We aim to investigate the relationships between clinical risk factors and the repetition of suicidal attempts. METHODS: 1349 suicide attempters were consecutively recruited in the Emergency Room (ER) of two academic hospitals in France and Spain. Patients were extensively assessed and demographic and clinical data obtained. Data mining was used to determine the minimal number of variables that blinded the rest in relation to the number of suicide attempts. Using this set, a probabilistic graph ranking relationships with the target variable was constructed. RESULTS: The most common diagnoses among suicide attempters were affective disorders, followed by anxiety disorders. Risk of frequent suicide attempt was highest among middle-aged subjects, and diminished progressively with advancing age of onset at first attempt. Anxiety disorders significantly increased the risk of presenting frequent suicide attempts. Pathway analysis also indicated that frequent suicide attempts were linked to greater odds for alcohol and substance abuse disorders and more intensive treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Novel statistical methods found several clinical features that were associated with a history of frequent suicide attempts. The identified pathways may promote new hypothesis-driven studies of suicide attempts and preventive strategies.

In the first part of this paper, we give a survey on convergence rates analysis of quasi-Newton methods in infinite Hilbert spaces for nonlinear equations. Then, in the second part we apply quasi-Newton methods in their Hilbert formulation to solve matrix equations. So, we prove, under natural assumptions, that quasi-Newton methods converge locally and superlinearly; the global convergence is also studied. For numerical calculations, we propose new formulations of these methods based on the matrix representation of the dyadic operator and the vectorization of matrices. Finally, we apply our results to algebraic Riccati equations.

International audience; Bipolar disorder has a genetic component, but the mode of inheritance remains unclear. A previous genome scan conducted in 70 European families led to detect eight regions linked to bipolar disease. Here, we present an investigation of whether the phenotypic heterogeneity of the disorder corresponds to genetic heterogeneity in these regions using additional markers and an extended sample of families. The MLS statistic was used for linkage analyses. The predivided sample test and the maximum likelihood binomial methods were used to test genetic homogeneity between early-onset bipolar type I (cut-off of 22 years) and other types of the disorder (later onset of bipolar type I and early-onset bipolar type II), using a total of 138 independent bipolar-affected sib-pairs. Analysis of the extended sample of families supports linkage in four regions (2q14, 3p14, 16p23, and 20p12) of the eight regions of linkage suggested by our previous genome scan. Heterogeneity testing revealed genetic heterogeneity between early and late-onset bipolar type I in the 2q14 region (P = 0.0001). Only the early form of the bipolar disorder but not the late form appeared to be linked to this region. This region may therefore include a genetic factor either specifically involved in the early-onset bipolar type I or only influencing the age at onset (AAO). Our findings illustrate that stratification according to AAO may be valuable for the identification of genetic vulnerability polymorphisms. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

International audience; BACKGROUND: Lipids appear to mediate depressive vulnerability in the elderly; however, sex differences and genetic vulnerability have not been taken into account in previous prospective studies. METHODS: Depression was assessed in a population of 1040 women and 752 men aged 65 years and older at baseline and after 7-year follow-up. Clinical level of depression (DEP) was defined as having either a score of 16 or higher on the Centre for Epidemiology Studies Depression scale or a diagnosis of current major depression on the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Lipid levels, apolipoprotein E, and serotonin transporter linked promoter region (5-serotonin transporter gene linked promoter region) genotypes were evaluated at baseline. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses adjusted by sociodemographic and behavioral variables, measures of physical health including ischemic pathologies, and genetic vulnerability indicated gender-specific associations between dyslipidemia and DEP, independent of the use of lipid-lowering agents or apolipoprotein E status. Men with low low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels had twice the risk of prevalent and incident DEP, whereas in women low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were found to be significantly associated with increased prevalent DEP (odds ratio = 1.5) only. A significant interaction was observed between low low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and 5-serotonin transporter gene linked promoter region genotype, men with s/s or s/l genotype being at increased risk of DEP (odds ratio = 6.0 and 2.7, respectively). No significant gene-environment interaction was observed for women. CONCLUSIONS: DEP is associated with higher atherogenic risk in women (low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), whereas the reverse is observed in men (low low-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Late-life depression may have a complex gender-specific etiology involving genetic vulnerability in men.

International audience; Anger-related traits are regulated by genes as well as early environmental factors. Both childhood maltreatment and genes underlie vulnerability to suicidal behaviors, possibly by affecting the constitution of intermediate phenotypes such as anger traits. The aim of this study was to test the interaction between nine candidate genes and childhood maltreatment in modulating anger-related traits in 875 adult suicide attempters. The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire were used to examine anger traits and traumatic childhood experiences, respectively. The functional polymorphism of the catecholamine-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) gene Val158Met significantly modulated the association between sexual abuse and anger-trait level (P = 0.001). In the presence of sexual abuse, individuals carrying the Val high-activity allele displayed greater disposition toward anger than individuals homozygous for the Met allele (P = 0.0003). Notably, none of the serotonin-related genes influenced the effect of childhood abuse on anger traits. The results of the present study suggest that anger-trait level is influenced by the interaction between childhood abuse and functional polymorphism in the COMT gene. This study was carried out in a population with a high frequency of childhood abuse and a high disposition toward anger, and replication in healthy subjects is needed.

In this paper we first recall some properties of triangle Toeplitz matrices of the Banach algebra Sr associated with power series. Then for boolean Toeplitz matrices M we explicitly calculate the product MN that gives the number of ways with N arcs associated with M. We compute the matrix BN (i, j), where B (i, j) is an infinite matrix whose the nonzero entries are on the diagonals m − n = i or m − n = j. Next among other things we consider the infinite boolean matrix B+∞ that have infinitely many diagonals with nonzero entries and we explicitly calculate (B+∞)N. Finally we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an infinite matrix M to map c (BN (i, 0)) to c.

RACE PRIM'HOLSTEIN ,FERTIL+/+ ,[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio] ,[SDV.SA.SPA]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences/Animal production studies ,FERTIL - Abstract

International audience; In 1994, it was proposed that decision-making requires emotion-related signals, known as somatic markers. In contrast, some authors argued that conscious knowledge of contingencies is sufficient for advantageous decision-making. We aimed to investigate the respective roles of somatic markers and explicit knowledge in decision-making. Thirty healthy volunteers performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Conscious knowledge was assessed using a sensitive questionnaire and skin conductance responses (SCRs) were recorded. Most participants acquired a preference for advantageous choices during the task and generated larger anticipatory SCRs before disadvantageous relative to advantageous choices. Performance on the IGT and the autonomic response were positively correlated (r=0.38, p=0.045). Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference in performance according to conscious awareness (p=0.009). There was no significant association between level of explicit knowledge and SCR (p=0.1). Finally, we did not find any interaction between explicit knowledge and performance although a lack of statistical power is not to be excluded. Advantageous decision-making therefore seems to be associated with two distinct, namely implicit and explicit, systems.

Genomics has brought with it a true biological revolution and has a great number of potential applications in all areas of life sciences. In animal sciences, it will become possible to improve the production of milk or meat according to consumer demands. Concerning food safety, molecular tools have already been commercialized for the detection of contaminants in meat. Genetic markers i.e. DNA markers, have also been marketed to detect the origins of individual bovine animals and their breed. For the genetic selection of cattle, DNA markers likely to be employed for the selection of tenderness or marbling traits of beef have been patented by Australian scientists. Several ongoing projects in France, Europe and the USA aim at studying the relevance of these markers and finding new ones. In muscle biology, tracking gene expression with DNA chips or by physically separating the expressed proteins has led to the identification of genes that play an important role in muscle development. These genes could in turn serve as new biological markers for tenderness, marbling or rearing practices. Large-scale projects both publicly and privately funded, in Europe, the South Sea Islands, and especially in North America aim at exploiting to a maximum new advances in genomics in favour of beef production.
