Abstract: International audience; Understanding ecosystems is crucial, in particular to take conservation actions. One way to do so is formal modelling and analysis. In this paper, we present the eden (Ecological Discrete-Event Networks) framework that provides ecologists with discrete modelling languages and dedicated analysis tools. These tools are based on well-known techniques in computer science, like symbolic state-spaces or model-checking, but used in quite a different way. Indeed, most formal analysis techniques provide yes/no answers to well-defined questions, possibly with a witness execution, which is good to assess whether a system exhibits or not a given property. However, most questions in ecology are not stated as “Does the system have such behaviour?” but rather as “Why does the system sometimes has such behaviour and how can we prevent it from happening?” Moreover, these questions are often hard to express formally. With eden, we propose an exploratory way to build progressively a representation of this behaviour that is suitable to answer such questions. The question itself being formalised on the way, together with the model exploration. This approach is based on a hybrid representation of the state-space that can be incrementally split into a graph of components (symbolic sets of states) linked by transitions. The goal is thus to provide the users with a human-readable representation of the state-space that can be fine-tuned with respect to the questions of interest, resulting in an object that constitutes by itself the expected explanation. While eden is rather specific to ecology, we advocate that its analysis method and tools could be beneficial for other domains.

Abstract: International audience; We present a complete characterization of reflective electroabsorption modulators (EAMs) monolithically integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), components that are capable of operating beyond 50 Gb/s in the C-band. The devices are based on GaInAsP multiple quantum wells on InP substrate, leveraging semi-insulating buried heterostructure waveguide definition and butt-joint integration technologies. Different device configurations, based on 80-μm and 150-μm long EAMs, are fabricated and characterized in both static and dynamic modes. The frequency response of the 80-μm long EAM is still flat at 26.5 GHz (setup upper limit) whereas the 150-μm long EAM exhibits a 3-dB cutoff bandwidth of 23 GHz. A zero-chirp is achieved for EAM reverse bias voltages between −1.2 V and −1.5 V depending on the wavelength. Under large-signal modulation, the frequency chirp induced by the shorter EAM is almost half that of the longer EAM, with their respective peak values being +1.5/−2 GHz and +3.2/−3.7 GHz (rising/falling edges) at 1545 nm (−1.3 V bias, 2.6 V voltage swing). We obtained high dynamic extinction ratios of ~14.5 dB and ~8 dB from the longer and the shorter EAMs, respectively, when they are operated at 25 Gb/s using non-return-to-zero coding. Finally, we achieved 12 km and 16 km colorless transmissions in the C-band (between 1530 nm and 1545 nm) over a standard single-mode fiber without equalization using the 150-μm and the 80-μm EAMs, respectively, with 4.5 dB and 2.5 dB dispersion penalties at a bit error rate of 10E−3.

Abstract: International audience; For more than three years now, the first atmospheric satellite of the Copernicus EO programme, Sentinel-5p (S5P) TROPOMI, has acquired spectral measurements of the Earth radiance in the visible range, from which near-real-time (NRTI) and offline (OFFL) processors retrieve the total, tropospheric and stratospheric column abundance of NO2. The S5P Mission Performance Centre performs continuous QA/QC of these data products enabling users to verify the fitness-for- purpose of the S5P data. Quality Indicators are derived from comparisons to ground-based reference data, both station-by-station in the S5P Automated Validation Server (AVS), and globally in more in-depth analyses. Complementary quality information is obtained from product intercomparisons (NRTI vs. OFFL) and from satellite-to-satellite comparisons. After three years of successful operation we present here a consolidated overview of the quality of the S5P TROPOMI NO2 data products, with particular attention paid to the impact of the various processor improvements, especially in the latest version (v1.4), activated on 2 December 2020, which introduces an updated cloud retrieval resulting in higher NO2 columns in polluted regions. Also the upcoming v2, due in April 2021 but already used to produce a Diagnostic Data Set, is discussed.S5P NO2 data are compared to ground-based measurements collected through either the ESA Validation Data Centre (EVDC) or network data archives (NDACC, PGN). Measurements from the Pandonia Global Network (PGN) serve as a reference for total NO2 validation, Multi-Axis DOAS data for tropospheric NO2 validation, and NDACC zenith-scattered-light DOAS data for stratospheric NO2 validation. Comparison methods are optimized to limit spatial and temporal mismatch errors (co-location strategy, photochemical adjustment to account for local time difference). Comparison results are analyzed to derive Quality Indicators and to conclude on the compliance w.r.t. the Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)mission requirements. This include estimates of: (1) the bias, as proxy for systematic errors, (2) the dispersion of the differences, which combines random errors with seasonal and mismatch errors, and (3) the dependence of these on key influence quantities (surface albedo, cloud cover...)Overall, the MPC quality assessment of S5P NO2 data concludes to an excellent performance for the stratospheric data (bias

Abstract: Ozone depletion over Polar Regions is monitored each year by satellite and ground-based instruments. The first signs of healing of the ozone layer linked to the decrease of ozone destructive substances (ODSs) were observed in Antarctica using different metrics (ozone mean values, ozone mass deficit, area of the ozone hole) and simple or sophisticated models. Chemistry climate models predict that climate change will not affect expected ozone recovery over Antarctica but will accelerate recovery in the Arctic due to the possible enhancement of the Brewer Dobson circulation. However, ozone loss observations by SAOZ UV-Vis spectrometers do not show a clear sign of recovery in the latter region. In addition, a record of 38% ozone loss in 2010/2011 and 2019/2020 was estimated.In this study, the vortex-averaged ozone loss in the last three decades will be evaluated for both Polar Regions using the passive ozone tracer of two chemical transport models (REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTMs) and total ozone observations from SAOZ and satellite observations (IASI/METOP and Multi-Sensor Reanalysis (MSR-2)).The tracer method allows us to determine the evolution of the daily rate of ozone destruction, and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The cumulative ozone destruction in the Artic varies between 0-10% in relatively warm winters with short vortex duration to up to 25-38% in colder winters with longer vortex persistence, while in Antarctica it is mostly stable, around 50%.Interannual variability of 10-days average rate will be analyzed and compared between both hemispheres as well as the timing to reach different thresholds of absolute ozone loss values. Finally, linear trend of ozone loss and temperature since 2000 will be estimated in both Polar Regions in order to evaluate possible ozone recovery.

Abstract: International audience; Monitoring the provision of multiple ecosystem services (ES) in social-ecological systems is a major challenge. Most tools usually tackle the problem by modelling individual ES, but do not perform a holistic analysis of a dynamic and integrated system. We developed a discrete-event model (DORIAN) and explored its potential for assessing biodiversity and multifunctionality of a mountain ski resort subjected to a changing climate. We represented this social-ecological system as a network comprising 16 binary components and 51 processes that define component interactions. We identified 22 economy- and ecology-related ES, depending on the presence/absence of components. We simulated six scenarios representing different economic, environmental and climatic situations and calculated a score (the sum of proxies for biodiversity or ES), corresponding to the level of biodiversity and multifunctionality. Results showed that climate change reduced the system’s multifunctionality and increased the number of degraded states, as well as the trajectories from healthy to degraded states. With increasing levels of biodiversity, only ecology-related ES were boosted at low biodiversity levels, while both high levels of ecology- and economy-related ES were maintained at high biodiversity levels. This result demonstrates the importance of conserving high biodiversity in a social ecological system, for an optimal “biodiversity – multifunctionality” win-win strategy.

Abstract: International audience; This paper reports on consolidated ground-based validation results of the atmospheric NO2 data produced operationally since April 2018 by the TROPOMI instrument on board of the ESA/EU Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5p) satellite. Tropospheric, stratospheric, and total NO2 column data from S5p are compared to correlative measurements collected from, respectively, 19 Multi-Axis DOAS (MAX-DOAS), 26 NDACC Zenith-Scattered-Light DOAS (ZSL-DOAS), and 25 PGN/Pandora instruments distributed globally. The validation methodology gives special care to minimizing mismatch errors due to imperfect spatio-temporal co-location of the satellite and correlative data, e.g., by using tailored observation operators to account for differences in smoothing and in sampling of atmospheric structures and variability, and photochemical modelling to reduce diurnal cycle effects. Compared to the ground-based measurements, S5p data show, on an average: (i) a negative bias for the tropospheric column data, of typically −23 to −37 % in clean to slightly polluted conditions, but reaching values as high as −51 % over highly polluted areas; (ii) a slight negative bias for the stratospheric column data, of about −0.2 Pmolec/cm2, i.e. approx. −2 % in summer to −15 % in winter; and (iii) a bias ranging from zero to −50 % for the total column data, found to depend on the amplitude of the total NO2 column, with small to slightly positive bias values for columns below 6 Pmolec/cm2 and negative values above. The dispersion between S5p and correlative measurements contains mostly random components, which remain within mission requirements for the stratospheric column data (0.5 Pmolec/cm2), but exceed those for the tropospheric column data (0.7 Pmolec/cm2). While a part of the biases and dispersion may be due to representativeness differences, it is known that errors in the S5p tropospheric columns exist due to shortcomings in the (horizontally coarse) a-priori profile representation in the TM5-MP chemistry transport model used in the S5p retrieval, and to a lesser extent, to the treatment of cloud effects. Although considerable differences (up to 2 Pmolec/cm2 and more) are observed at single ground-pixel level, the near-real-time (NRTI) and off-line (OFFL) versions of the S5p NO2 operational data processor provide similar NO2 column values and validation results when globally averaged, with the NRTI values being on average 0.79 % larger than the OFFL values.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 disease in the French national population of dialysis patients, their course of illness and to identify the risk factors associated with mortality. Our study included all patients on dialysis recorded in the French REIN Registry in April 2020. Clinical characteristics at last follow-up and the evolution of COVID-19 illness severity over time were recorded for diagnosed cases (either suspicious clinical symptoms, characteristic signs on the chest scan or a positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) for SARS-CoV-2. A total of 1,621 infected patients were reported on the REIN registry from March 16th, 2020 to May 4th, 2020. Of these, 344 died. The prevalence of COVID-19 patients varied from less than 1% to 10% between regions. The probability of being a case was higher in males, patients with diabetes, those in need of assistance for transfer or treated at a self-care unit. Dialysis at home was associated with a lower probability of being infected as was being a smoker, a former smoker, having an active malignancy, or peripheral vascular disease. Mortality in diagnosed cases (21%) was associated with the same causes as in the general population. Higher age, hypoalbuminemia and the presence of an ischemic heart disease were statistically independently associated with a higher risk of death. Being treated at a selfcare unit was associated with a lower risk. Abstract: The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1990 by comparison between total ozone measurements of SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer.When SAOZ measurements are missing for various reasons, lack of sunlight, station closed or instrument failure, they are replaced since 2017 by IASI/Metop overpasses above the station. These measurements in the thermal Infrared are available all year around, at all latitudes even in the polar night. IASI data have been compared to SAOZ and to 3-D CTM REPROBUS and the agreement is better than 3% at the latitude of the polar circle.The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years up to 25-39% in colder and longer ones.Since a strong and large vortex centred at the North Pole, PSCs and activated chlorine are still present at all levels in the lower stratosphere on January 9, 2020, there is a good probability that a significant O3 loss may happen in 2020. But since, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss depends on the vortex duration, strength and possible re-noxification, it is difficult to predict in advance the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter.Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic vortex during the winter 2019/20 compared to previous winters and REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations.

Abstract: Aims Despite similar efficacy and safety profile in pilot studies, bioresorbable polymer drug-eluting stents (BP-DES) could have potential benefit over latest generation durable polymer (DP)-DES by facilitating vessel healing, therefore reducing inflammation and neoatherosclerosis leading to enhanced clinical safety. Therefore, we sought to perform a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the safety and efficacy of everolimus-eluting BP-DES (BP-EES) to second-generation DP-DES. Methods and results We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the safety and efficacy of BP-EES in patients treated for coronary artery disease. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library through February 2018 for RCTs that included outcome data on BP-EES. We identified four eligible studies, which included a total of 4631 patients. Three studies reported a follow-up of one year and one study of five years. The BP-EES group, included 2315 patients and the DP-DES group included 2316 patients (1143 treated with DP-EES and 1173 treated with zotarolimus eluting DP-DES). Patient's characteristics were comparable between the two groups except for higher prevalence of prior MI in the DP-DES group (25.7 vs 22.5%, respectively, p = 0.001). Procedural characteristics were comparable among groups except for slightly longer lesions in the BP-EES group compared to the DP-DES group (mean 15.1 vs 14.9 mm, p = 0.04). No significant differences were observed for cardiac mortality (p = 0.72), occurrence of MI (p = 0.64), any TLR (p = 0.93), ST (p = 0.85) or major adverse cardiac events (p = 0.43). Conclusion Overall, based on the available data BP-EES had similar one-year outcomes to contemporary DP-DES. Whether these devices could enhance clinical safety remains to be evaluated at longer follow-up.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we consider discrete qualitative models of ecosystems viewed as collections of interacting living (animals, plants.. .) and nonliving entities (air, water, soil.. .), whose conditions of appearance/disappearance are controlled by a set of formal rules (i.e., processes). We present here a rule-based method allowing to compare ecosystems. The method relies on a measure of similarity and on an optimization algorithm. In addition, the proposed method allows to detect patterns (i.e., ecological processes or sets of processes) in ecosystems. We have validated the method by applying it against a set of models and patterns provided by ecologists.

Abstract: International audience; To understand long-term ecosystem dynamics, several concepts have been recently proposed that consider ‘basins of attraction’ to express resilience and ‘tipping points’ that express sharp change in an ecosystem's behaviour. However, these temporal features remain difficult to identify and quantify because current models usually focus only on a part of the whole ecosystem behaviour, whereas a holistic approach should be preferred. We propose an original family of models based on discrete systems and designed to comprehensively characterize ecosystem dynamics holistically and over the long term. We developed a qualitative model based on Petri nets, made up of a relational graph (interaction network) that was then rigorously handled using transition rules. Unlike traditional modelling and graph theory approaches, transition rules can strongly modify the graph structure (i.e. a dynamic topology occurs). We examined the value of Petri nets when applied to the simple ecosystem of a termite colony. A termite colony comprises of abiotic and biotic components and processes that we explored along all of their possible trajectories. Several temporal features, such as basins of attraction (i.e. strongly connected states), tipping points (critical transitions along trajectories) and various kinds of collapses (functioning systems whose structures were nevertheless fixed), were easily detected and quantified. We propose that Petri nets developed for more complex ecosystems will provide original insights into their holistic behaviour.

Abstract: International audience; While developing automated planning algorithms helps in making robots more autonomous, the development of acting systems is also of major concerns. Acting systems aim at refining high-level actions into executable commands, while managing access to resources, possible failures, or any other kind of unpredictable situation from the planner point of view. Improving the trust on autonomous robots also requires to have a formal model of acting, and the capability to perform some analysis on this model. In this paper, we present ASPiC, an acting system based on the modeling of robot's skills using a specific control-flow Petri net model. The skills can then be combined using well-defined operators to build a complete plan that refines a high-level action. Some good properties are guaranteed by construction, while others can be verified on the resulting plan model. This paper also presents the application of ASPiC to an area protection mission by an autonomous surface vehicle.

Abstract: International audience; The first of the two missions foreseen in the ExoMars program was successfully launched on 14th March 2016. It included the Trace Gas Orbiter and the Schiaparelli Entry descent and landing Demonstrator Module. Schiaparelli hosted the DREAMS instrument suite that was the only scientific payload designed to operate after the touchdown. DREAMS is a meteorological station with the capability of measuring the electric properties of the Martian atmosphere. It was a completely autonomous instrument, relying on its internal battery for the power supply. Even with low resources (mass, energy), DREAMS would be able to perform novel measurements on Mars (atmospheric electric field) and further our understanding of the Martian environment, including the dust cycle. DREAMS sensors were designed to operate in a very dusty environment, because the experiment was designed to operate on Mars during the dust storm season (October 2016 in Meridiani Planum). Unfortunately, the Schiaparelli module failed part of the descent and the landing and crashed onto the surface of Mars. Nevertheless, several seconds before the crash, the module central computer switched the DREAMS instrument on, and sent back housekeeping data indicating that the DREAMS sensors were performing nominally. This article describes the instrument in terms of scientific goals, design, working principle and performances, as well as the results of calibration and field tests. The spare model is mature and available to fly in a future mission.

Abstract: International audience; The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer.The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones.However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only dependent on the extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its re-noxification by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside, as reported by the total NO2 columns measured by the SAOZ instruments.Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic during the winter 2017/18 compared to that of previous winters.Compared to observed SAOZ O3 loss, REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations are showing similar losses, however the agreement may vary from one year to the other, depending on the assumptions of vortex strength and isolation. The comparison between ozone loss amplitudes and ozone loss rates, seen each year since 1994 by SAOZ and the two CTM simulations will be followed by a discussion of possible causes in their variable amplitude.

Abstract: International audience; This paper assesses the quality of IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer)/Metop-A (IASI-A) and IASI/Metop-B (IASI-B) ozone (O3) products (total and partial O3 columns) retrieved with the Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI Ozone (FORLI-O3; v20151001) software for 9 years (2008–July 2017) through an extensive intercomparison and validation exercise using independent observations (satellite, ground-based and ozonesonde). Compared with the previous version of FORLI-O3 (v20140922), several improvements have been introduced in FORLI-O3 v20151001, including absorbance look-up tables recalculated to cover a larger spectral range, with additional numerical corrections. This leads to a change of ∼ 4% in the total ozone column (TOC) product, which is mainly associated with a decrease in the retrieved O3 concentration in the middle stratosphere (above 30hPa/25km). IASI-A and IASI-B TOCs are consistent, with a global mean difference of less than 0.3% for both daytime and nighttime measurements; IASI-A is slightly higher than IASI-B. A global difference of less than 2.4% is found for the tropospheric (TROPO) O3 column product (IASI-A is lower than IASI-B), which is partly due to a temporary issue related to the IASI-A viewing angle in 2015. Our validation shows that IASI-A and IASI-B TOCs are consistent with GOME-2 (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2), Dobson, Brewer, SAOZ (Système d'Analyse par Observation Zénithale) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) TOCs, with global mean differences in the range of 0.1%–2% depending on the instruments compared. The worst agreement with UV–vis retrieved TOC (satellite and ground) is found at the southern high latitudes. The IASI-A and ground-based TOC comparison for the period from 2008 to July 2017 shows the long-term stability of IASI-A, with insignificant or small negative drifts of 1%–3%decade−1. The comparison results of IASI-A and IASI-B against smoothed FTIR and ozonesonde partial O3 columns vary with altitude and latitude, with the maximum standard deviation being seen for the 300–150hPa column (20%–40%) due to strong ozone variability and large total retrievals errors. Compared with ozonesonde data, the IASI-A and IASI-B O3 TROPO column (defined as the column between the surface and 300hPa) is positively biased in the high latitudes (4%–5%) and negatively biased in the midlatitudes and tropics (11%–13% and 16%–19%, respectively). The IASI-A-to-ozonesonde TROPO comparison for the period from 2008 to 2016 shows a significant negative drift in the Northern Hemisphere of −8.6±3.4%decade−1, which is also found in the IASI-A-to-FTIR TROPO comparison. When considering the period from 2011 to 2016, the drift value for the TROPO column decreases and becomes statistically insignificant. The observed negative drifts of the IASI-A TROPO O3 product (8%–16%decade−1) over the 2008–2017 period might be taken into consideration when deriving trends from this product and this time period.

This simulation with a horizontal grid point resolution of 20kmx20km cannot resolve the stratospheric overshooting convection (SOC). Its ability to reproduce other key parameters playing a role in the stratospheric WV abundance is investigated using the balloon-borne TRO-Pico campaign measurements, the upper-air soundings over Brazil, and the satellite observations by Aura Microwave Limb Sounder, Microwave Humidity Sounder, and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 12. The BRAMS exhibits a good ability in simulating temperature, cold-point, WV variability around the tropopause. However, the simulation is typically observed to be warmer by approximate to 2.0 degrees C and wetter by approximate to 0.4 ppmv at the hygropause, which can be partly affiliated with the grid boundary nudging of the model by European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts operational analyses. The modeled cloud tops show a good correlation (maximum cross-correlation of approximate to 0.7) with Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 12. Furthermore, the overshooting cells detected by Microwave Humidity Sounder are observed at the locations, where 75% of the modeled cloud tops are higher than 11km. Finally, the modeled inertia-gravity wave periodicity and wavelength are comparable with those deduced from the radio sounding measurements during TRO-Pico campaign. The good behavior of BRAMS confirms the SOC contribution in the WV abundance, and variability is of lesser importance than the large-scale processes. This simulation can be used as a reference run for upscaling the impact of SOC at a continental scale for future studies. Abstract: International audience; After the well-reported record loss of Arctic stratospheric ozone of up to 38% in the winter 2010–2011, further large depletion of 27% occurred in the winter 2015–2016. Record low winter polar vortex temperatures, below the threshold for ice polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) formation, persisted for one month in January 2016. This is the first observation of such an event and resulted in unprecedented dehydration/denitrification of the polar vortex. Although chemistry–climate models (CCMs) generally predict further cooling of the lower stratosphere with the increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs), significant differences are found between model results indicating relatively large uncertainties in the predictions. The link between stratospheric temperature and ozone loss is well understood and the observed relationship is well captured by chemical transport models (CTMs). However, the strong dynamical variability in the Arctic means that large ozone depletion events like those of 2010–2011 and 2015–2016 may still occur until the concentrations of ozone-depleting substances return to their 1960 values. It is thus likely that the stratospheric ozone recovery, currently anticipated for the mid-2030s, might be significantly delayed. Most important in order to predict the future evolution of Arctic ozone and to reduce the uncertainty of the timing for its recovery is to ensure continuation of high-quality ground-based and satellite ozone observations with special focus on monitoring the annual ozone loss during the Arctic winter.

Abstract: International audience; On Mars, dust and clouds are primary elements for studying the interactions of solar radiation with the atmosphere and surface and their influence on the radiation balance. Depending on dust opacity and parameters such as size distribution, airborne dust can provide positive or negative radiative feedbacks into dynamical processes. This role played by dust in the circulation of the martian atmosphere points out the need of retrieving the concentration and physical properties of dust at different time periods and locations.In this work, we will discuss different retrieval procedures developed for ground-based sensors. We first perform several sensitivity tests of the sensors signals to parameters such as the dust opacity and size distribution to establish which dust parameters can be retrieved by the different sensors. Subsequently, in order to adopt for each sensor the retrieval procedures capable to obtain as much information as possible on the optical properties of martian aerosol, we will evaluate different configurations of the procedures as well. A similar study will be presented for the detection and characterization of martian clouds.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present a fine-grained multi-stage metric-based triangular remeshing algorithm on manycore and NUMA architectures. It is motivated by the dynamically evolving data dependencies and workload of such irregular algorithms, often resulting in poor performance and data locality at high number of cores. In this context, we devise a multi-stage algorithm in which a task graph is built for each kernel. Parallelism is then extracted through fine-grained independent set, maximal cardinality matching and graph coloring heuristics. In addition to index ranges precalculation, a dual-step atomic-based synchronization scheme is used for nodal data updates. Despite its intractable latency-boundness, a good overall scalability is achieved on a NUMA dual-socket Intel Haswell and a dual-memory Intel KNL computing nodes (64 cores). The relevance of our synchronization scheme is highlighted through a comparison with the state-of-the-art.

Abstract: International audience; Fast simulation, i.e., automatic computation of sequential runs, is widely used to analyse Petri nets. In particular, it enables for quantitative statistical analysis by observing large sets of runs. Moreover, fast simulation may be used to actually run a Petri net model as a (prototype) implementation of a system, in which case such a net would embed fragments of the code of the system. In both these contexts, being able to perform faster simulation is highly desirable. In this paper, we propose a way to accelerate fast simulation by exploiting parallel computing, targeting both the multi-core cpus available nowadays in every laptop or workstation, and larger parallel computers including those with distributed memory (clusters). We design an algorithm to do so and assess in particular its correctness and completeness through its formal modelling as a Petri net whose state space is analysed. We also present a benchmark of a prototype implementation that clearly shows how our algorithm effectively accelerates fast simulation, in particular in the case of large concurrent coloured Petri nets, which is precisely the kind of nets that are usually slow to simulate.

Abstract: International audience; The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer. The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones. However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only dependent on the extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its re-noxification by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside, as reported by the total NO2 columns measured by the SAOZ instruments. Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic during the winter 2016/17 compared to that of previous winters. Compared to observed SAOZ O3 loss, REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations are showing differences varying between 0% and 7% depending on the assumptions of vortex strength and isolation. The comparison between ozone loss amplitudes and ozone loss rates, seen each year since 1994 by SAOZ and the two CTM simulations will be followed by a discussion of possible causes in their variable amplitude.

Abstract: "The solar irradiance sensor (SIS) was included in the DREAMS package onboard the ExoMars 2016 Entry Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module, and has been selected in the METED meteorological station onboard the ExoMars 2020 Lander. This instrument is designed to measure at different time intervals the scattered flux or the sum of direct flux and scattered flux in UVA (315-400 nm) and NIR (700-1100 nm) bands. For SIS'16, these measurements are performed by a total of 3 sensors per band placed at the faces of a truncated tetrahedron with face inclination angles of 60. The principal goal of SIS'16 design is to perform measurements of the dust opacity in UVA and NIR wavelengths ranges, crucial parameters in the understanding of the Martian dust cycle. The retrieval procedure is based on the use of radiative transfer simulations to reproduce SIS observations acquired during daytime as a function of dust opacity. Based on different sensitivity analysis, the retrieval procedure also requires to include as free parameters (1) the, dust effective radius; (2) the dust effective variance; and (3) the imaginary part of the refractive index of dust particles in UVA band. We found that the imaginary part of the refractive index of dust particles does not have a big impact on NIR signal, and hence we can kept constant this parameter in the retrieval of dust opacity at this channel. In addition to dust opacity measurements, this instrument is also capable to detect and characterize clouds by looking at the time variation of the color index (CI), defined as the ratio between the observations in NIR and UVA channels, during daytime or twilight. By simulating CI signals with a radiative transfer model, the cloud opacity and cloud altitude (only during twilight) can be retrieved. Here the different retrieval procedures that are used to analyze SIS measurements, as well as the results obtained in different sensitivity analysis, are presented and discussed." Abstract: International audience; The future technology migration in access networks compels the development of key innovative transmitters operating at 10 Gb/s around 1550 nm and capable of transmitting data in extended reach passive optical networks (>60 km). A laser modulated directly appears to be a low cost and a simple solution to address these needs. However, the extinction ratio and the distance of transmission are limited by frequency chirping inherent to high bit rate modulation at 1550 nm. In this letter, we demonstrate the monolithic integration of a directly modulated lasers and a ring resonator (RR) and show the possibility to engineer the RR with specific frequency modulation efficiency. The ring is used as an optical eye reshaper, which enables the increase of the extinction ratio above 9 dB. Transmissions up to 65 km with 5.8 dBm of modulated optical power coupled into the fiber are demonstrated, proving the feasibility of our transmitter for the next generation passive optical network stage 2

Abstract: International audience; All satellites total ozone (TOC) measurements available from SBUV, OMI-T, OMI-D, OMI-CCI, GOME-CCI, GOME2-CCI, SCIAMACHY-CCI, NPP and IASI, since 2004 until 2015 are compared to those provided by the UV-Vis Ground-Based SAOZ/NDACC spectrometer at two tropical stations, Bauru in the continental South Eastern Brazil and Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. The comparison shows systematic differences between all satellites and SAOZ TOC of different amplitude between the stations although the instruments and the data processing are identical. Indeed, the SAOZ TOC is always larger in Bauru and the difference SAT-SAOZ displays a seasonal variation of larger amplitude there than in Reunion. But importantly also, a long-term SAOZ TOC increase by 2-3 % (6-9 DU) is observed between 2001 and 2015 in Bauru only and not in Reunion as well as in any of the other SAOZ stations.The Bauru larger TOC and the seasonal variations reported by SAOZ are consistent with the known larger tropospheric ozone there, due to both lightning NOx (LNOx) ozone production at 12-15 km altitude in Dec-Mar and ozone formation in the lower troposphere following biomass burning during the dry season in Aug-Oct. The 2-3% ozone increase since 2001 not seen by the satellites is consistent with the biomass burning increase in Brazil following the deforestation of the area for increasing agricultural production. The ozone increase in the low troposphere is confirmed by the MOZAIC/IAGOS in situ commercial aircraft measurements in the Sao Paolo area. Shown in the presentation will be the series of Satellites-SAOZ TOC in Bauru and Reunion, the differences between the two stations and a discussion of the possible origin of the difference between Satellites and SAOZ reporting.

Abstract: International audience; The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D Chemical Transport Model (CTM) simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer. The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate total ozone depletion and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter.The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% during a relatively warm and early winter warming, to 25-39% during colder and longer ones. However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss does not depend on the vortex spring duration, but also on its strength controlling its renoxi[U+FB01]cation and thus chlorine deactivation by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside as shown by the total NO2 columns also measured by SAOZ.Compared to observed total columns, REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations are showing highly variable agreement strongly depending on the assumptions of vortex strength and isolation.Displayed in the presentation will be the comparison between ozone loss amplitudes seen each year since 1994 and the two model CTM simulations, followed by a discussion of cause of possible changes in their amplitude.

Abstract: International audience; The latest assessment report on the state of the ozone layer (WMO 2014) confirmed the stabilization of the ozone loss in Antarctica since 2000. Several studies have been made in order to quantify the increase in total ozone column (TOC) in the Antarctic polar vortex in spring directly linked to the small decrease of ozone depleting substances levels in the polar stratosphere. These studies generally show a significant increase of TOC averaged inside the vortex since 2000 but they differ on the proxies used for the quantification of ozone interannual variability.In this study, the trend of TOC inside the vortex is analyzed over the 1980-2015 period using multilinear regression model based on various proxies (heat flux, QBO, solar flux, AAO and aerosols). The ozone trend is simulated by a piecewise linear trend (PWLT) before and after the break year in 2000, corresponding to the change of slope in ozone long-term evolution. The originality of this study is to take into account the baroclinicity of the vortex. For this, two different methods are used to classify TOC values inside the vortex as a function of Equivalent Latitude (EL). In the first standard one, the Nash criterion (Nash et al., 1996) is applied at a single isentropic level (475K or 550K). In the second one it is applied to a range of isentropic levels between 400K and 600K with a step of 25K.The study is focused on the period September 15 - October 15, the most representative of low ozone levels inside the vortex. The trend model is applied to SAOZ UV-Vis spectrometer data at Dumont d’Urville (66.7 ̊S, 140 ̊E) and also to TOMS/OMI above Antarctica and the trend results are presented for the different classification methods.

Abstract: International audience; The variability of stratospheric chemical composition occurs on a broad spectrum of timescales, ranging from day to decades. A large part of the variability appears to be driven by external forcings such as volcanic aerosols, solar activity, halogen loading, levels of greenhouse gases (GHG), and modes of climate variability (quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)). We estimate the contributions of different external forcings to the interannual variability of stratospheric chemical composition and evaluate how well 3-D chemistry-climate models (CCMs) can reproduce the observed response-forcing relationships. We carry out multivariate regression analyses on long time series of observed and simulated time series of several traces gases in order to estimate the contributions of individual forcings and unforced variability to their internannual variability. The observations are typically decadal time series of ground-based data from the international Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and the CCM simulations are taken from the CCMVal-2 REF-B1 simulations database. The chemical species considered are column O3, HCl, NO2, and N2O. We check the consistency between observations and model simulations in terms of the forced and internal components of the total interannual variability (externally forced variability and internal variability) and identify the driving factors in the interannual variations of stratospheric chemical composition over NDACC measurement sites. Overall, there is a reasonably good agreement between regression results from models and observations regarding the externally forced interannual variability. A much larger fraction of the observed and modelled interannual variability is explained by external forcings in the tropics than in the extratropics, notably in polar regions. CCMs are able to reproduce the amplitudes of responses in chemical composition to specific external forcings. However, CCMs tend to underestimate very substantially the internal variability and hence the total interannual variability for almost all species considered. This lack of internal variability in CCMs might partly originate from the surface forcing of these CCMs by analysed SSTs. The results illustrate the potential of NDACC ground-based observations for evaluating CCMs.

A compiler for ABCD is shipped with the toolkit SNAKES [16,18] and ABCD has been used for years, which is quickly surveyed. This paper is the first complete and formal presentation of the language and its semantics. It also presents uses cases of ABCD for the modelling and analysis of various systems.

Abstract: International audience; Atmospheric ozone is an Essential Climate Variable which impacts the radiation budget of the Earth, interacts with atmospheric dynamics and climate, and influences chemically other radiatively active species. As part of the Ozone Climate Change Initiative (Ozone_cci) project, a large number of ozone data sets have been generated from a full suite of atmospheric chemistry satellite missions. Following a first phase of 3 years during which new and improved algorithms and data products have been demonstrated and assessed against well-defined user requirements, the ongoing second phase of the Ozone_cci concentrates on extending and further improving these data sets with the ambition to realize the full potential of the existing archive of satellite ozone sensors. We present an overview of the main realizations of the project. This covers long-series of consistent ozone columns and profiles derived from nadir UV sensors and the thermal infrared IASI instrument. Also addressed is the generation of a large scale coherent data base of vertically resolved ozone measurements derived from a full suite of limb and occultation sensors, optimised for accuracy in a broad range of altitudes extending from the UT/LS to the mesosphere.

Abstract: International audience; Since more than fifteen years, total and tropospheric NO2 columns have been retrieved from nadir space-borne sensors such as SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT, OMI on AURA and GOME-2 on MetOp platforms. The NO2 data products are generally retrieved in three main steps: (1) a DOAS spectral analysis yielding the total column amount of NO2 along the slant optical path, (2) an estimation of the stratospheric NO2 column, to be subtracted from the total column to derive the tropospheric contribution, and (3) a conversion of the total and tropospheric slant columns into vertical columns based on airmass factor calculations which require a-priori knowledge of the NO2 vertical distribution and surface albedo, as well as information on cloud cover and height.In this study we combine correlative measurements available from several ground-based remote sensing networks to address the validation of (1) the GOME-2 GDP 4.8 NO2 products generated within the EUMETSAT O3M-SAF project, and (2) the SCIAMACHY, OMI and GOME-2 TEMIS product. Zenith-sky DOAS/SAOZ measurements from the NDACC network are used to assess the stratospheric NO2 columns retrieved from the satellite, while the consistency of the total and tropospheric NO2 columns in urban, sub-urban and back-ground conditions is investigated using direct-sun Pandora and multi-axis MAXDOAS data sets from about 40 stations. Where available, vertical profile information from MAXDOAS measurements is used to assess the reliability of the different satellite a-priori profile shapes.Results are discussed in terms of observed biases between satellite and ground-based data sets, their dependence on location, season and cloud conditions. For stratospheric columns, the uncertainty related to the correction applied for ensuring the photochemical matching between satellite and ground-based observations is also evaluated. The satellite pixels resolution effect is statistically explored in relation to the typical extent of the emission sources at urban site locations, using data from SCIAMACHY 60x30 km², GOME-2 40x80 km² and OMI 13x24 km².

Abstract: International audience; The amplitude of column ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer.The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones.However, as shown by the unprecedented column depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only depen- dent on the extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its re-noxification by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside, as reported by the total NO2 columns measured by the SAOZ instruments.Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic during the winter 2015/16 compared to that of previous winters. The ability of REPROBUS and SLIMCAT 3D CTMs to reproduce adequately the observed loss each winter will be further discussed.

Abstract: International audience; All satellites total ozone measurements available from SBUV, OMI-T, OMI-D, OMI-CCI, GOME-CCI, GOME2- CCI, SCIAMACHY-CCI, NPP and IASI, since 2004 until 2015 now are compared to those provided by the UV-Vis SAOZ/NDACC spectrometer at two tropical stations of Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean and Bauru in Southern Brazil. The differences between satellites and SAOZ show systematic seasonal variations of 2-3% (6-9 DU) amplitude and sharp negative peaks in Jan-Mar in the austral summer. The largest low peaks seen on IASI, OMI-T, NPP and OMI-CCI at Reunion are shown to be due to hurricanes. In turn, those seen in Brazil correlate with high altitude overshooting convective clouds. The origin of the seasonality of the Sat-SAOZ difference is still unknown. Surprisingly and though there has been no change in either SAOZ instruments or data analysis processes, the amplitude of the seasonal cycle of the Sat-SAOZ difference reduces in 2012 and drops to less than ± 0.5% (1.5 DU) after 2013 in Reunion Island and less than ±1% in Bauru, reduction for which there is no clear explanation.Shown in the presentation will be the demonstration of the impact of hurricanes and high altitude clouds on satellites ozone retrievals, followed by a discussion of possible causes of seasonality of Sat-SAOZ difference and the its amplitude drop after 2012.

Abstract: International audience; High accuracy global total ozone measurements from space are key data for evaluating theamplitude of ozone depletion, understanding its contribution and consequences on climate changeand predicting the future evolution of both ozone and climate. Long series of total ozone data areavailable, but showing still systematic significant differences between them. Here most recent dataavailable from IASI A and B are compared to SAOZ NDACC UV-Vis ground-based measurementsat several stations in the tropics and mid-latitudes, as well as all other satellites data available sincethe beginning of IASI operations in 2007. The list of satellites includes GOME, SCIAMACHY,GOME2 and OMI reprocessed with the GODFIT V3 (GOME-Type Direct FITing) algorithmdeveloped in the frame of the ESA Ozone Climate Initiative (Lerot et al., 2014), the NASA SBUVv8.6 (McPeters et al., 2013), the NASA-AURA-OMIT and OMID (Levelt et al, 2007).According to these comparisons, the IASI A-B ozone columns are systematically overestimated by2 - 6%, depending on the station and the satellite, and the difference between all of them is showingmore or less seasonality of amplitude depending also on the satellite and the station.Mean biases are attributed to smaller ozone absorption cross-sections in the IR compared to the UVand visible and also to longitudinal ozone profiles variations ignored in most satellite retrievals.When corrected for mean biases, the seasonality of the differences between IASI, SAOZ and mostothers is generally smaller than ± 1% that is of the order of magnitude of the dispersion and thusrandom uncertainty of the measurements, except in a few specific cases:a) the presence of a larger 2-3% peak IASI-Sat difference in the monthly mean in May at OHP onboth IASI A and B suggesting a retrieval error on all IASI data on that month but of totallyunknown origin;b) a larger seasonality of the 4 CCI GOFDIT processed satellites compared to IASI and otherssuggesting a slight systematic error related to the use of zonal mean O3 profiles climatologiesignoring longitudinal variations;c) larger dispersion, seasonality and moreover opposite seasonality phase of NPP at southern midlatitudesindicative of an error in those data files in the southern hemisphere;d) and, finally, an overestimation of IASI ozone in Reunion Island in coincidence with hurricanes,suggesting that high altitude clouds are not properly removed in the IASI data sets.Shown in the presentation will be the illustration of the IASI- SAOZ- Sat differences at all SAOZstations and possible explanations when significant differences are observed.

Abstract: International audience; Including children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in mainstream environments creates a need for new interventions whose efficacy must be assessed in situ. This article presents a tablet-based application for activity schedules that has been designed following a participatory design approach involving mainstream teachers, special education teachers, and school aides. This application addresses two domains of activities: classroom routines and verbal communications. We assessed the efficiency of our application with two overlapping user studies in mainstream inclusion, sharing a group of children with ASD. The first experiment involved 10 children with ASD, where five children were equipped with our tabled-based application and five were not equipped. We show that (1) the use of the application is rapidly self-initiated (after 2 months for almost all the participants) and (2) the tablet-supported routines are better performed after 3 months of intervention. The second experiment involved 10 children equipped with our application; it shared the data collected for the five children with ASD and compared them with data collected for five children with intellectual disability (ID). We show that (1) children with ID are not autonomous in the use of the application at the end of the intervention, (2) both groups exhibited the same benefits on classroom routines, and (3) children with ID improve significantly less their performance on verbal communication routines. These results are discussed in relation with our design principles. Importantly, the inclusion of a group with another neurodevelopmental condition provided insights about the applicability of these principles beyond the target population of children with ASD. Abstract: A small and sophisticated optical depth sensor (ODS) has been designed to work in the atmosphere of Mars. The instrument measures alternatively the diffuse radiation from the sky and the attenuated direct radiation from the Sun on the surface. The principal goals of ODS are to retrieve the daily mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) and to detect very high and optically thin clouds, crucial parameters in understanding the Martian meteorology and climatology. The detection of clouds is undertaken at twilight, allowing the detection and characterization of clouds with opacities below 0.03 (sub-visual clouds). In addition, ODS is capable to retrieve the aerosol optical depth during nighttime from moonlight measurements. Recently, ODS has been selected at the METEO meteorological station on board the ExoMars 2018 Lander. In order to study the performance of ODS under Mars-like conditions as well as to evaluate the retrieval algorithms for terrestrial measurements, ODS was deployed in Ouagadougou (Africa) between November 2004 and October 2005, a Sahelian region characterized by its high dust aerosol load and the frequent occurrence of Saharan dust storms. The daily average AOD values retrieved by ODS were compared with those provided by a CIMEL sunphotometer of the AERONET (Aerosol Robotic NETwork) network localized at the same location. Results represent a good agreement between both ground-based instruments, with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 for the whole data set and 0.94 considering only the cloud-free days. From the whole data set, a total of 71 sub-visual cirrus (SVC) were detected at twilight with opacities as thin as 1.10−3 and with a maximum of occurrence at altitudes between 14 and 20 km. Although further optimizations and comparisons of ODS terrestrial measurements are required, results indicate the potential of these measurements to retrieve the AOD and detect sub-visual clouds.

Abstract: International audience; Several initiatives are ongoing to improve the traceability of atmospheric composition measurements to agreed standards, to quantify and reduce the measurement uncertainties, and to quantify and improve the mutual consistency of atmospheric data across ground-based networks and between satellite missions (e.g., WMO O3S-DQA, SI2N, ESA CCI and FRM projects, EU FP7 QA4ECV and EU H2020 GAIA-CLIM). With increasing data accuracy, natural variability has become a non-negligible source of error for single measurements, for their comparison, for their merging and for their assimilation in chemistry-transport models. Therefore a corresponding effort has been undertaken to quantify the specific uncertainties resulting from spatial inhomogeneities and temporal variability in the atmospheric field. Quantifying such uncertainties is for instance a key objective of the current EU H2020 project GAIA-CLIM.In this contribution, we present a detailed quantification of the impact of natural inhomogeneities and vari- ability on several corner-stone ozone observing systems and on the intercomparison of their data (both for validation and for merging purposes). This study is based on OSSEs (Observing System Simulation Experiments) of existing ozone observing systems carried out with the OSSSMOSE simulator, which includes explicit descrip- tion of multi-dimensional effects impacting the remote sensing of atmospheric ozone (Verhoelst et al., AMT, 2015). Simulations are presented for total ozone column and ozone profile measurements acquired by GAW- contributing reference networks (Brewer, Dobson, NDACC DOAS, GAW/NDACC/SHADOZ ozonesondes) and by nadir-viewing UV-visible satellites (GOME, SCIAMACHY, GOME-2, Sentinel-5p TROPOMI). Illustrations show how natural inhomogeneities and variability introduces additional uncertainties: on the representativeness of single measurements, on comparisons between different (imperfectly) co-located measurements, and on higher-level products based on an averaging of unevenly distributed data.As a generalization of these case-by-case results, we describe on the global scale how those additional un- certainties depend on measurement type, latitude, season, atmospheric phenomena etc., as this determines the fitness-for-purpose of the current ozone observing systems and provides valuable feedback for the de- sign/optimization of ground networks and satellite missions.

Abstract: International audience; SNAKES (SNAKES is the Net Algebra Kit for Editors and Simulators) is a general purpose Petri nets library, primarily for the Python programming language but portable to other ones. It defines a very general variant of Python-coloured Petri nets that can be created and manipulated through the library, as well as executed to explore state spaces. Thanks to a variety of plugins, SNAKES can handle extensions of Petri nets, in particular algebras of Petri nets [4,26]. SNAKES ships with a compiler for the ABCD language that is precisely such an algebra. Finally, one can use the companion tool Neco [14] that compiles a Petri net into an optimised library allowing to compute efficiently its state space or perform LTL model-checking thanks to library SPOT [8,13]. This paper describes SNAKES’ structure and features.

Abstract: International audience; One of the great achievements of the first phase of the ESA Ozone Climate Change Initiative has been the release of new level-2 total ozone data sets from GOME, SCIAMACHY and GOME-2/Metop-A reprocessed with the latest GODFIT-3 algorithm. These data sets are characterized by unprecedented standards of consistency, stability and accuracy.Recently, new algorithmic developments have been implemented within GODFIT in order to ingest and analyse backscattered light spectra measured by OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument), the hyperspectral imager launched as part of the AURA platform payload in 2004. In particular, a new look-up table version of GODFIT has been developed to process the massive OMI level-1 data set in a timely and fast manner. We show that this approach maintains a level of accuracy similar to that of the on-line GODFIT version, in addition to providing accelerated performance by a factor of 10. This fast algorithm has been recently used to reprocess the entire OMI time series, thus extending the ESA CCI Climate data record for total ozoneIn this work, the OMI GODFIT-3 total ozone product is compared to the two operational products OMI-TOMS and OMI-DOAS, and also to the historical multi-sensor CCI data set. These comparisons clearly indicate that the new product is highly consistent with other data sets and is of very high quality, even in extreme geophysical conditions (ozone hole, Polar Regions, …). We show that an optimization of the pre-flight instrumental slit functions has been necessary in the ozone fitting window (325-335 nm) in order to completely eliminate any row dependence in the product. With its remarkable long-term stability, OMI has the potential to be used in combination with GOME as a long-term reference for producing multi-sensor climate total ozone data record.

Abstract: International audience; High accuracy global total ozone measurements from space are key data for evaluating the amplitude of ozone depletion, understanding its contribution and consequences on climate change and predicting the future evolution of both ozone and climate. Long series of total ozone data are available, but showing still systematic significant differences between them. Here most recent data available from GOME-ERS2, SCIAMACHY-Envisat, GOME2-Metop reprocessed with the GODFIT V3 (GOME-Type Direct FITing) algorithm developed in the frame of the ESA Ozone Climate Initiative (Lerot et al., 2014), from NASA SBUV v8.6 (McPeters et al., 2013), NASA-AURA-OMI (Levelt et al, 2007) and IASI Metop A and B (Clerbaux et al., 2009), are compared with SAOZ total ozone ground-based NDACC measurements available at several stations distributed in latitude in the world since the early 90’s (Pommereau and Goutail, 1988).The comparison does show some small mean biases between satellites and SAOZ, as well as between satellites, depending on the satellites observing periods. But most significant is the amplitude of the seasonal variations of the satellite-SAOZ difference varying with the satellite data used varying for example at northern mid-latitude from 2% amplitude with the GODFIT GOME, SCIA and GOME2 data, 3% with SBUV and 4% with IASI. Although the seasonal cycle of stratospheric temperature contributes partly in the case of SBUV measurements in the UV, the largest identified cause of seasonal variation of the satellite-SAOZ difference appears related to a Sun Zenith Angle dependence affecting possibly both satellites and/or ground-based measurements. The origin of this SZA dependence is further explored by looking at the satellite-SAOZ differences at various NDACC stations distributed in latitude.

Abstract: International audience; Zenith-sky UV-visible instruments have been used to monitor stratospheric NO2 columns from pole to pole for more than 2 decades, as part of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC). Long-term monitoring and fit-for-purpose data quality are essential commitments of the network. Recently, recommendations were made for a better harmonization of the retrieval of NO2 stratospheric vertical columns (Van Roozendael and Hendrick 2012, http://ndacc-uvvis-wg.aeronomie.be/tools/NDACC_UVVIS-WG_NO2 settings_v4.pdf). Those include, in addition to the use of harmonized SCD settings, a common approach to the air-mass factor (AMF) calculation, based on pre-calculated look-up tables of climatological AMFs resolved in latitude, time, wavelength, surface albedo, solar zenith angle and station altitude.

Abstract: International audience; Better understanding of atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions and in particular of the role of aerosols and clouds in this Earth system is of prime importance in the Arctic. In the frame of the French IAOOS Equipex project, a new observational network is planned to be developed for ocean-ice-atmosphere climate survey over the Arctic, starting in 2015, to complement satellite observations. Eye-safe lidar measurements will allow us to profile aerosols and clouds for the atmospheric part, with the objective to perform regular measurements and characterize the vertical structure and optical properties. Radiation and meteorological parameters will be measured at the surface. A first buoy has been prototyped and deployed in April 2014 at the Barneo site set by the Russian teams at the North Pole. Measurements with the first autonomous backscatter lidar ever deployed in the arctic have been taken from April to end of November 2014 before the buoy was lost. Four profiles a day have been performed allowing a good sampling of cloud variability. Observations have shown that the occurrence of low level clouds was higher than 90% during summer. The project is presented, instrument performance is described and first results are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; The goal of this study is to comprehensively document an anomalous dehydration of the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL) related to a major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in January 2013. The analysis involves the data of balloon soundings of water vapour at various tropical locations using FLASH-B, Pico-SDLA and CFH hygrometers as well as NOAA Water instrument flown onboard high-altitude Global Hawk aircraft. Simultaneous water vapour and backscatter measurements by FLASH-B and COBALD sondes provide information on tropopause clouds formation process. Satellite observations of water vapour by Aura MLS are used to derive the deviation from climatological values. Trajectory modeling is applied for locating the dehydration source spots. Spatiotemporal evolution of dehydration at different scales is characterized after combining the consistent in situ and satellite water vapour observations. All data sets provide evidence of rapid and severe dehydration of the TTL throughout the tropical belt shortly after the onset of SSW. In situ measurements around the Cold Point Tropopause (CPT) show up to 2 ppmv of negative deviation from MLS 10-year climatology with extreme water mixing ratios below 1 ppmv in the Western Pacific region. The TTL dehydration case of 2013 is compared with previous similar occurrences and the role of extra-tropical dynamics in setting the global stratospheric water budget through thermal response in the TTL is pointed out

IAOOS (Ice Atmosphere Ocean Observing System, http://www.iaoos-equipex.upmc.fr, http://iaoos.ipev.fr/) is a nine-year France-fundedproject (2011-2019), developed by LOCEAN and LATMOS, which objective is to provide and maintain an integrated observing system over the ArcticOcean that collects synoptic and near real time information related to the state of the atmosphere, the snow, the sea-ice and the ocean.
