Abstract: International audience; BACKGROUND: Little is known about phototype and the response to systemic treatment in psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: To assess the characteristics of psoriasis, the therapeutic choice and its efficacy according to phototype. METHODS: We included patients from the PsoBioTeq cohort initiating a first biologic. Patients were classified according to their phototype. The evaluation included disease characteristics, choice of the initial biologic and therapeutic response at 12 months based on PASI 90 and DLQI 0/1. RESULTS: Of the 1400 patients included, 423 (30.2%), 904 (64.6%) and 73 (5.2%) were in the phototype I-II, III-IV and V-VI groups, respectively. The V-VI group had a higher initial DLQI, more frequently initiated ustekinumab. Patients in the phototype V-VI group maintained the first sequence of biologic as the other phototype groups, even though the proportion of patients reaching the PASI 90 and DLQI 0/1 at 12 months was lower in this group than other groups. CONCLUSION: Patient phototype seems associated with quality of life and choice of the initial biologic in psoriasis. Phototype V-VI group less frequently switched treatments than did the other groups when the response was not efficient.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common health issue. A clinical expression of VTE is a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that may lead to pulmonary embolism (PE), a critical illness. When DVT is suspected, an ultrasound exam is performed.However, the characteristics of the clot observed on ultrasound images cannot be linked with the presence of PE. Computed tomography angiography is the gold standard to diagnose PE. Nevertheless, the latter technique is expensive and requires the use of contrast agents.Purpose: In this article, we present an image processing method based on ultrasound images to determine whether PE is associated or not with lower limb DVT. In terms of medical equipment, this new approach (Doppler ultrasound image processing) is inexpensive and quite easy.Methods: With the aim to help medical doctors in detecting PE, we herein propose to process ultrasound images of patients with DVT. After a first step based on histogram equalization, the analysis procedure is based on the use of bi-dimensional entropy measures. Two different algorithms are tested: the bi-dimensional dispersion entropy (DispEn2D) mesure and the bi-dimensional fuzzy entropy (FuzEn2D) mesure. Thirty-two patients (12 women and 20 men, 67.63±16.19 years old), split into two groups (16 with and 16 without PE), compose our database of around 1490 ultrasound images (split into seven different sizes from 32x32 px to 128x128 px). p-values, computed with the Mann-Whitney test, are used to determine if entropy values of the two groups are statistically significantly different. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are plotted and analyzed for the most significant cases to define if entropy values are able to discriminate the two groups.Results: p-values show that there are statistical differences between FuzEn2D of patients with PE and patients without PE for 112x112 px and 128x128px images. Area under the ROC curve (AUC) is higher than 0.7 (threshold for a fair test) for 112x112 and 128x128 images. The best value of AUC (0.72) is obtained for 112x112 px images.

Abstract: Background Spermatozoa interact with oviduct secretions before fertilization in vivo but the molecular players of this dialog and underlying dynamics remain largely unknown. Our objectives were to identify an exhaustive list of sperm-interacting proteins (SIPs) in the bovine oviduct fluid and to evaluate the impact of the oviduct anatomical region (isthmus vs. ampulla) and time relative to ovulation (pre-ovulatory vs. post-ovulatory) on SIPs number and abundance. Methods Pools of oviduct fluid (OF) from the pre-ovulatory ampulla, pre-ovulatory isthmus, post-ovulatory ampulla, and post-ovulatory isthmus in the side of ovulation were collected from the slaughterhouse. Frozen-thawed bull sperm were incubated with OF or phosphate-buffered saline (control) for 60 min at 38.5 °C. After protein extraction and digestion, sperm and OF samples were analyzed by nanoLC-MS/MS and label-free protein quantification. Results A quantitative comparison between proteins identified in sperm and OF samples (2333 and 2471 proteins, respectively) allowed for the identification of 245 SIPs. The highest number (187) were found in the pre-ovulatory isthmus, i.e., time and place of the sperm reservoir. In total, 41 SIPs (17%) were differentially abundant between stages in a given region or between regions at a given stage and 76 SIPs (31%) were identified in only one region × stage condition. Functional analysis of SIPs predicted roles in cell response to stress, regulation of cell motility, fertilization, and early embryo development. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive list of SIPs in the bovine oviduct and evidences dynamic spatio-temporal changes in sperm-oviduct interactions around ovulation time. Moreover, these data provide protein candidates to improve sperm conservation and in vitro fertilization media.

Abstract: International audience; ObjectiveThis study assessed primary stent patency predictive factors in three groups of patients with history of lower limb (LL) vein thrombosis: non-thrombotic iliac vein lesion (NIVL), acute deep vein thrombosis (aDVT), and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS).MethodsConsecutive patients from January 2014 to December 2020 with history of LL vein stenting from seven hospitals were included. All patients received an iliac or common femoral venous stent and had at least a six month follow up available with stent imaging. Anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy strategies employed after venous stenting are reported and compared between groups.ResultsThis study included 377 patients: 134 NIVL, 55 aDVT, and 188 PTS. Primary patency was statistically significantly higher in the NIVL group (99.3%) compared with the PTS group (68.6%) (p < .001) and the aDVT group (83.6%) (p = .002). PTS patients received a statistically significantly greater number of stents (p < .001) and had more stents below the inguinal ligament (p < .001). Median follow up was 28.8 months (IQR 16, 47). Discontinuation of antiplatelet therapy at the last assessment was 83.6% for NIVL, 100% for aDVT, and 95.7% for the PTS group (p < .001). Discontinuation of anticoagulation therapy at the last assessment was 93.2% for NIVL, 25.0% for aDVT, and 70.3% for the PTS group (p < .001). The only predictor of worse primary patency in the aDVT group was long term anticoagulation before stenting.ConclusionPatients with NIVL have better primary patency after venous stenting than patients with venous thrombotic disorders. Long term anticoagulation before stenting was the only factor associated with poorer primary patency in patients with aDVT.

Abstract: International audience; OBJECTIVE: Ischemic stroke is a major health issue. Currently, the relationship between dietary patterns and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases including stroke is established, but the effect of systematic dietary intervention on dietary changes in ischemic stroke patients is unknown. Our objective was to compare changes in the dietary pattern of ischemic stroke patients who received a systematic diet intervention with changes in the dietary pattern of ischemic stroke patients who did not receive a systematic dietary intervention during their hospitalization. METHODS: In this before-and-after study, two groups of patients with ischemic stroke were compared: Group 1 included 34 patients admitted with an ischemic stroke without a systematic dietray intervention; Group 2 included 34 patients admitted with an ischemic stroke with a systematic dietary intervention. Dietary patterns were assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire of 19 questions (from a previously validated questionnaire of 14 questions), at the onset of stroke and at 6 months after stroke. This questionnaire allows the calculation of different scores as follows: global food score, saturated fatty acids score (SFA), unsaturated fatty acids score (UFA), fruit and vegetable score, and alcohol score. RESULTS: Score changes were more important in group 2 than in group 1 for the global food score (7.4 ± 7 vs. 1.9 ± 6.7, p = 0.0013), the fruit and vegetable score (2 ± 2.6 vs. 0.6 ± 2.2, p = 0.0047), and the UFA score (1.8 ± 2.7 vs. 0.1 ± 3.3, p = 0.0238), whereas no significant differences were observed for the SFA score (-3.9 ± 4.9 vs. -1.6 ± 6, p = 0.1779) and the alcohol score (-0.4 ± 1.5 vs. -0.3 ± 1.1, p = 0.6960). CONCLUSION: This study showed that systematic dietary intervention during hospitalization improves the dietary patterns of ischemic stroke patients. The impact on the recurrence of ischemic stroke or cardiovascular events after dietary pattern changes needs to be studied.

Abstract: International audience; (1) Background: Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcpO(2)) is used to determine the severity of lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD). Many authors used a ratio of limb to chest TcpO(2), also called the regional perfusion index (RPI), which should be independent of variations in oxygen delivery and reflective of local limb oxygen supply. The relevance of a reference probe-positioned TcpO(2) electrode is debated. We aimed to review the relevance of the reference probe in previous studies using rest TcpO(2). (2) Methods: We searched Medline and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials on 22 September 2022 using keywords related to TcpO(2), reference probe and LEAD. (3) Results/Discussion: Fifteen studies were included in the review. Nine studies investigated LEAD severity (n = 9), amputation healing predication (n = 4), surgical outcome prediction (n = 2), therapeutic effect (n = 3) and difference according to diabetic status (n = 1). Four studies investigated more than 1 indication. Among 12 (16.7%) studies using RPI, only two authors found a benefit of using RPI instead of absolute TcpO(2). Using only univariate analysis, one author reported that RPI was significantly related to viability at 1 year, while distal TcpO(2) was not, on 13 limbs. The following year, the same author published a new study including 118 limbs that reported that RPI and absolute TcPO2 were both prognostic factors for limb viability at 1 year using a multivariate model. (4) Conclusions: Only one study firmly supporting the use of RPI, calculated using a reference probe on the arm, to predict BKA healing. Prospective studies are needed to validate this result; for other indications there is insufficient data supporting the use of a TcpO(2) reference probe at rest.

Abstract: International audience; Objectives: The clinical profile and outcomes of patients with Covid-19 who require veno-arterial or veno-venous-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO - VAV-ECMO) are poorly understood. We aimed to describe the characteristics and outcomes of these patients and to identify predictors of both favorable and unfavorable outcomes.Methods: ECMOSARS is a multicenter, prospective, nationwide French registry enrolling patients who require VV/VA-ECMO in the context of Covid-19 infection (652 patients at 41 centers). We focused on 47 patients supported with VA- or VAV-ECMO for refractory cardiogenic shock.Results: Median age was 49. 14% of patients had a prior diagnosis of heart failure. The most common etiologies of cardiogenic shock were acute pulmonary embolism (30%), myocarditis (28%), and acute coronary syndrome (4%). E-CPR (Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) occurred in 38%. In-hospital survival was 28% in the whole cohort, and 43% when E-CPR patients were excluded. ECMO cannulation was associated with significant improvements in pH and FiO2 on day one, but non-survivors showed significantly more severe acidosis and higher FiO2 than survivors at this point (p = 0.030 and p = 0.006). Other factors associated with death were greater age (p = 0.02), higher BMI (p = 0.03), E-CPR (p = 0.001), non-myocarditis etiology (p = 0.02), higher serum lactates (p = 0.004), epinephrine (but not noradrenaline) use before initiation of ECMO (p = 0.003), hemorrhagic complications (p = 0.001), greater transfusion requirements (p = 0.001), and more severe SAVE and SAFE scores (p = 0.01 and p = 0.03).Conclusions: We report the largest focused analysis of VA- and VAV-ECMO recipients in Covid-19. Although relatively rare, the need for temporary mechanical circulatory support in these patients is associated with poor prognosis. However, VA-ECMO remains a viable solution to rescue carefully selected patients. We identified factors associated with poor prognosis and suggest that E-CPR is not a reasonable indication for VA-ECMO in this population.

Abstract: International audience; Iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides are major phases that may control the cerium (Ce) behavior in the Earth's Critical Zone. However, understanding Ce behavior with Fe oxyhydroxides remains uncompleted. Especially, if thermodynamic calculations suggest that Fe(III) is not a sufficiently strong oxidant, several studies reported the presence of Ce(IV) onto Fe oxyhydroxides. In this study, multiple approaches, including modeling and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, deciphered the driving forces of Ce(III) oxidation to Ce(IV) onto goethite. Results showed that oxidized Ce occurred onto goethite with a Ce(III)/Ce(IV) ratio depending on the Ce concentration in the solution ([Ce]tot). The percentage of Ce(IV) onto goethite ranged from 20% to 50%, linearly increasing with [Ce]tot. Comparable observation with a redox-inert Al-hydroxide (gibbsite), allowed to rule out the importance of Fe(III) redox reactivity as the main driver of Ce(III) oxidation. Instead, thermodynamic calculations suggested that surface precipitation of Ce(IV)-hydroxides, whose formation is favored with increasing [Ce]tot, was an important driving force of the redox reaction. Because the goethite surface seemed to stabilize more strongly Ce(IV) than Ce(III) surface species than does gibbsite, differences in binding mechanisms of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) onto different mineral surfaces have been suggested to play a role on Ce redox speciation.

Pour se prémunir le plus possible deseffets de la compétition, la recherche bibliographiques’est focalisée sur des études étudiant les effets del’allélopathie et comparant différentes variétés d’unemême espèce cultivée, et une méthode d’analysea été développée pour discriminer les deux effets.¾RÉSULtAtS - Dans un grand nombre d’articlesscientifiques sur les effets de l’allélopathie au champ,le rôle de la compétition est ignoré ou insuffisammentcaractérisé par les auteurs. Ainsi, il n’est pas possiblede déterminer si, dans ces études, la régulation desadventices est vraiment due à l’allélopathie. In fine,seuls sept articles fournissent des éléments de preuvedes effets de l’allélopathie par les plantes cultivéesdans la régulation des adventices au champ.Mais, même dans ces articles, des effets de la compétition ne peuvent pas être totalement exclus. Cetravail pointe la nécessité d’être prudent lors de lalecture d’articles rapportant des effets de l’allélopathieau champ. De nouvelles expérimentations pourraientêtre menées en s’appuyant sur les recommandationsformulées à la suite de cette étude.

Abstract: Satellite remote sensing from space is a powerful way to monitor the global dynamics of marine plankton. Previous research has focused on developing models to predict the size or taxonomic groups of phytoplankton. Here we present an approach to identify representative communities from a global plankton network that included both zooplankton and phytoplankton and using global satellite observations to predict their biogeography. Six representative plankton communities were identified from a global co-occurrence network inferred using a novel rDNA 18S V4 planetary-scale eukaryotic metabarcoding dataset. Machine learning techniques were then applied to train a model that predicted these representative communities from satellite data. The model showed an overall 67% accuracy in the prediction of the representative communities. The prediction based on 17 satellite-derived parameters showed better performance than based only on temperature and/or the concentration of chlorophyll a. The trained model allowed to predict the global spatiotemporal distribution of communities over 19-years. Our model exhibited strong seasonal changes in the community compositions in the subarctic-subtropical boundary regions, which were consistent with previous field observations. This network-oriented approach can easily be extended to more comprehensive models including prokaryotes as well as viruses.

Abstract: International audience; IntroductionLes traitements combinés sont l’association de médicaments utilisés principalement pour augmenter l’efficacité et réduire la toxicité de chaque médicament pris isolément. Dans le psoriasis sévère cutané ou articulaire chez l’adulte, la combinaison de traitements systémiques habituels avec des biothérapies est fréquente (12 % dans le registre PsoBioTeq), et chez l’enfant dans l’arthrite juvénile idiopathique et les maladies inflammatoires de l’intestin. De rares données (cas cliniques) sont disponibles chez l’enfant souffrant de psoriasis sévère.L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer en pratique quotidienne l’utilisation des combinaisons de traitements systémiques habituels et de biothérapies chez les enfants souffrant de psoriasis sévère : schémas d’utilisation, efficacité, sécurité.Matériel et méthodesÉtude en deux étapes : évaluation des thérapies combinées chez les 170 enfants inclus dans les cohortes franco-italiennes BiPe. Les enfants devaient avoir reçu pendant au moins 1 mois acitrétine, méthotrexate, ou cyclosporine avec une biothérapie ; et une enquête menée en avril 2022 auprès des dermatologues français et italiens (SFDP, GrPso, SIDerP) pour mieux comprendre les motivations à utiliser ou non ces combinaisons.RésultatsAu total, 33 enfants (19,4 %) inclus dans 13 centres ont cumulé 48 associations thérapeutiques (durée cumulée totale : 43,6 ans), dont trois cas de trithérapies (acitrétine-méthotrexate et inhibiteur du TNF-alpha). Les formes sévères de psoriasis étaient surreprésentées : psoriasis arthropathique (27,3 %), palmoplantaire (21,1 %), érythrodermique (6,1 %) ou pustuleux (6,1 %). Quatorze associations différentes ont été utilisées incluant les trois systémiques conventionnels et étanercept, adalimumab, infliximab, ustékinumab et sécukinumab. Les quatre associations les plus fréquentes étaient étanercept-acitrétine (n = 10), adalimumab-acitrétine (n = 7), adalimumab-méthotrexate (n = 5), et ustékinumab-méthotrexate (n = 5). Les combinaisons ont été utilisées à l’initiation du traitement biologique dans 41 cas (85,4 %), et les 7 autres cas après une période de monothérapie du biologique. Les scores PGA et PASI moyens entre le début du traitement et M3 ont diminué pour toutes les associations. Quatre événements indésirables graves ont été rapportés (3 infections et 1 urticaire) toujours avec une évolution favorable.Soixante et un dermatologues ont répondu à l’enquête, 39 (63,9 %) avaient déjà utilisé ou prévu d’utiliser des associations, principalement des inhibiteurs du TNF-alpha avec de l’acitrétine ou du méthotrexate. La principale motivation était d’optimiser le traitement biologique en cas d’efficacité partielle ou de perte d’efficacité.DiscussionLes combinaisons de traitements sont finalement fréquemment utilisées dans le psoriasis de l’enfant, avec une grande variabilité des situations cliniques et des associations, sans toxicité significative. Leur place éventuelle dans la prise en charge du psoriasis de l’enfant reste à préciser : switchs progressifs en initiation de traitement (éviter une poussée, ou optimisation du systémique), de psoriasis difficiles à traiter, les psoriasis cutanés avec rhumatisme psoriasique associé, optimisation d’une biothérapie…

Abstract: International audience; Abundance and growth of the European eel from six small northern French estuaries during their growth phase were examined to explore variations according to the local habitat characteristics. The length–weight relationships and growth models fitted to length-at-age back-calculated otolith growth increments were used to compare the growth. Higher abundances were observed in the smaller estuaries (2.4 to 10.5 ind. fyke nets 24 h−1). The eel length ranged from 215–924 mm with an age range of 4–21 years. There was no significant difference in fish eel lengths or age except in the Liane estuary where the individuals were larger. The length–weight relationships showed an isometric or positive allometric growth in most estuaries. The Gompertz growth models, which best fits the growth, showed no significant differences between estuaries except for female eels from the Liane and the Somme estuaries where the growth performance index was higher. The estimated annual growth rate varied from 2.7 to 115.0 mm·yr−1 for female and from 4.4 to 90.5 mm·yr−1 for male. The present study shows that eels in the six estuaries had CPUE and growth rates similar to those previously reported in larger habitats. These results reinforce the idea that small estuaries are important habitats that contribute significantly to the eel population and, therefore, play an essential role in conservation strategies for European eel.

Abstract: Understanding the composition of the oviduct fluid (OF) is crucial to better comprehend the microenvironment in which sperm capacitation, fertilization and early embryo development take place. Therefore, our aim was to determine the spatiotemporal changes in the OF proteome according to the anatomical region of the oviduct (ampulla vs. isthmus), the proximity of the ovulating ovary (ipsilateral vs. contralateral side) and the peri-ovulatory stage (pre-ovulatory or Pre-ov vs. post-ovulatory or Post-ov). Oviducts from adult cyclic cows were collected at a local slaughterhouse and pools of OF were analyzed by nanoLC-MS/MS and label-free protein quantification (n = 32 OF pools for all region × stage × side conditions). A total of 3760 proteins were identified in the OF, of which 65% were predicted to be potentially secreted. The oviduct region was the major source of variation in protein abundance, followed by the proximity of the ovulating ovary and finally the peri-ovulatory stage. Differentially abundant proteins between regions, stages and sides were involved in a broad variety of biological functions, including protein binding, response to stress, cell-to-cell adhesion, calcium homeostasis and the immune system. This work highlights the dynamic regulation of oviduct secretions and provides new protein candidates for interactions between the maternal environment, the gametes and the early embryo.

Abstract: The process of remembering is one of re-presentation. But for the survivor of a historical event of such extreme violence as the Holocaust, the time of her memory is not necessary that of history, nor that of her testimony for that matter. When she remembers, the witness follows her own internal time, avoiding elements of her experience or falling back repeatedly into them ; according to a trajectory determined by her own traumatic relationship to the event. Therefore, the linear progression implied by the production process and by the biographical format does not reflect the trajectory followed by the witness in the space of her own memory as she speaks/writes. The testimony thus follows a double temporality, one superficial and linguistic ; the other latent and mnemonic. Herein, we link them both by exploring mnemonic dynamics as thematic transitions : topics identify the time of History and experiential content, but the dynamics of transitions between these topics open a window onto the dynamics of memory. In this model, the testimony becomes a trajectory in an attractor space – topics - specific to the witness but also marked by trauma. The approach is illustrated on a corpus of 16 testimonies of surviving deportees, and results analyzed in terms of predictions about post-traumatic cognition and its linguistic correlates., La re-mémoration est un processus de re-présentation, mais pour le survivant d'un événement historique d'une violence aussi radicale que la Shoah, le temps de la mémoire n'est pas nécessairement celui de l'Histoire, ni même celui de son témoignage. Lorsqu'il se souvient, le témoin suit son temps propre, évitant certains éléments de son expérience ou y revenant systématiquement ; selon une trajectoire déterminée par son rapport traumatique à l’événement. Ainsi, la progression linéaire imposée par le processus de production et par le format biographique ne correspond pas nécessairement au trajet que fait le témoin dans l'espace de sa mémoire lorsqu'il parle/écrit. Le récit se construit alors selon une double temporalité, l'une superficielle et linguistique ; l'autre, latente et mnésique. Nous proposons ici de relier les deux niveaux et d'étudier les dynamiques mnésiques comme dynamiques des transitions thématiques : les thèmes identifient le temps de l'Histoire et la connotation expérientielle, mais ce sont les dynamiques de transitions entre ces thèmes qui identifient celui de la mémoire. Le récit est alors une trajectoire dans un espace d'attracteurs – les thèmes - spécifique au sujet, mais correspondant également à un mode de traitement cognitif du trauma. Abstract: International audience; Raw earth, a typical material of the rural architecture of the Rennes basin (16th-20th century) François PUSTOC'H (1), Simon PUAUD (1), Éric DARRIGRAND (2), Fabrice MAHÉ (2) ABSTRACT: The starting point of this study is based on an observation: the large number of vernacular raw earth constructions in the rural area of the Rennes region. The construction of these buildings was carried out according to two distinct techniques: the cob where the walls are built in successive lifts of solid earth without formwork; wattle daub, which consists of filling a lath with earth that occupies the spaces of a wooden supporting structure (half-timbering). A field survey, conducted by one of us (FP) between 2013 and 2019, on the territory of administrative Brittany, has allowed to circumscribe the area within which this material has been used. It covers almost all of Ille-et-Vilaine, a large eastern half of the Côtes-d'Armor and the extreme northeast of Morbihan. The technique of cob, unlike that of wattle daub, requires a large quantity of raw earth, the walls of buildings frequently exceed 50 cm in thickness. Its use reveals the abundance of this georesource in the environment. In rural areas, the soil is taken from the site, after the topsoil has been removed: either during the preliminary levelling of the construction site; or in pits, which would explain the abundance of ponds in our countryside. The presence of this type of construction is therefore directly linked to the nature of the geological substratum and the presence of superficial formations on the construction site. The field survey shows that it is in the west of the Rennes basin that these constructions are the most frequent. This distribution is linked to the presence of Brioverian soils, which are made up, in this area, of highly altered facies of soft shales and sandstones that do not yield good quality building stone. This area is also characterized by a remarkable cover of aeolian silts. The combination of these two factors would explain the density of the raw earth constructions. During the course of the survey, more than 800 samples were taken from the entire area where the raw earth architecture was identified. This sampling was carried out on the constructions and on the characteristic surface formations (residual weathering deposit, aeolian silts, alluvium) recognized then located on the geological maps at 1/50 000 of the BRGM. The grain-size analysis of the latter has made it possible to establish granulometric reference curves. The Rennes basin appeared ideal for this study because of its geological characteristics and the abundance of its raw earth constructions. A corpus of 240 samples taken from buildings was analyzed on the laser granulometer (CILAS 1180) of the LAGO platform of the CReAAH archeosciences laboratory at the University of Rennes 1. The resulting multi-modal curves are difficult to interpret. The search in characteristic components by minimization of deviation could be developed by two of us (DE and FM) and applied to our results. The decomposition into elementary curves specific to different families of particles seems to be a good approach. The reference curves of the different families were established from the analysis of the field samples. Two methods were implemented: considering granulometric classes (clays, fine silts, coarse silts, fine sands, coarse sands) and considering the different types of surface formations (residual weathering deposit, loess, sands). An algorithm was then developed to process all the data from the Rennes basin. It allowed the creation of two tables giving the proportions of each component (class, formations). The results of this study support the hypothesis of a relationship between the abundance of raw earth constructions and the geological nature of the substratum of the Rennes basin: Brioverian formations surmounted by an important alteration profile and a cover of aeolian silts. (1) UMR 6566 CReAAH; Le point de départ de cette étude repose sur un constat : le nombre important de constructions vernaculaires en terre crue sur le territoire rural de la région rennaise. L’édification de ces bâtiments a été réalisée selon deux techniques distinctes :-la bauge où les murs sont montés en couches successives de terre massive sans coffrage ;-le torchis qui consiste à remplir de terre un lattis occupant les espaces d’une structure porteuse en bois (colombage).Une enquête de terrain, menée par l’un de nous (FP) entre 2013 et 2019, sur le territoire de la Bretagne administrative, a permis de circonscrire la zone au sein de laquelle ce matériau a été utilisé. Elle recouvre presque toute l’Ille-et-Vilaine, une grande moitié est des Côtes-d’Armor et l’extrême nord-est du Morbihan.La technique de la bauge, contrairement à celle du torchis, nécessite une quantité importante de terre crue, les murs des édifices dépassent fréquemment 50 cm d’épaisseur. Son emploi révèle l’abondance dans l’environnement de cette géoressource.En milieu rural, la terre est prélevée sur place, après décaissement de la terre végétale : soit lors du nivellement préalable du site de construction ; soit dans des fosses, ce qui expliquerait l’abondance des marres dans nos campagnes. La présence de ce type de bâtiment est donc directement liée à la nature du substrat géologique et à la présence de formations superficielles sur le lieu de construction.L’enquête de terrain montre que c’est dans l’ouest du bassin rennais que ces édifices sont les plus fréquents. Cette distribution est liée à la présence de terrains briovériens qui sont constitués, dans cette zone, de faciès très altérés de schistes et de grès tendres qui ne donnent pas de pierre de construction de bonne qualité. Cette zone se caractérise également par un recouvrement remarquable de limons éoliens. L’association de ces deux facteurs expliquerait la densité des constructions en terre crue.Au cours de l’enquête, plus de 800 échantillons ont été prélevés sur toute la superficie de l’aire où l’architecture en terre crue a été identifiée. Cet échantillonnage a été effectué sur les constructions et sur les formations superficielles caractéristiques (altérites, limons éoliens, alluvions) reconnues puis repérées sur les cartes géologiques au 1/50 000 du BRGM. L’analyse granulométrique de ces dernières a permis d’établir des courbes granulométriques de référence.C’est par ses caractéristiques géologiques et l’abondance de ses constructions en terre crue que le bassin de Rennes est apparu idéal pour effectuer cette étude.Un corpus de 240 échantillons prélevés sur des constructions a été analysé sur le granulomètre laser (CILAS 1180) de la plateforme LAGO du laboratoire d’archéosciences du CReAAH à l’université de Rennes 1.Les courbes plurimodales obtenues sont délicates à interpréter. Il a permis la création de deux tableaux donnant les proportions de chacune des composantes (classe, formations).Les résultats de cette étude confortent l’hypothèse d’une relation entre l’abondance des constructions en terre crue et la nature géologique du substrat du bassin de Rennes : formations briovériennes surmontées d’un important profil d’altération et d’une couverture de limons éoliens.

Abstract: International audience; Paediatric psoriasis has been associated with school absenteeism, limitation of physical activities, psychiatric disorders and, in the longer term, with sexual dysfunction and addictions. This raises the hypothesis that childhood onset psoriasis may affect patients' educational development, and further social and professional outcomes. This study evaluated the relationship between childhood onset psoriasis and patients' educational and socioeconomic characteristics, and the development of addictions in adulthood. This cross-sectional ancillary study captured patients' characteristics at baseline in the French PSOBIOTEQ registry. Data in adulthood included: educational (baccalaureate) and socioeconomic (working activity) groups, smoking status (self-reporting of being a current smoker vs past smoker or non-smoker), alcohol consumption (defined as at least 1 glass of alcoholic beverage per day), and living conditions (alone/family/social institutions; child at home). A total of 1,960 patients were included, of whom 26.2% had childhood onset psoriasis. In multivariate analyses, childhood onset psoriasis was associated with smoker status (p = 0.02). No association was observed with educational level, working activity, living conditions, or alcohol consumption. This study provides reassuring data overall with regard to the impact of childhood onset psoriasis on major social outcomes. Evidence for some association with addictive behaviours paves the way for larger prospective studies assessing in depth the social and educational impact of this disease.

Abstract: Early embryo development is a dynamic process involving important molecular and structural changes leading to the embryonic genome activation (EGA) and early cell lineage differentiation. Our aim was to elucidate proteomic changes in bovine embryos developed in vivo. Eleven females were used as embryo donors and pools of embryos at the 4–6 cell, 8–12 cell, morula, compact morula and blastocyst stages were analyzed by nanoliquid chromatography coupled with label free quantitative mass spectrometry. A total of 2,757 proteins were identified, of which 1,950 were quantitatively analyzed. Principal component analysis of data showed a clear separation of embryo pools according to their developmental stage. The hierarchical clustering of differentially abundant proteins evidenced a first cluster of 626 proteins that increased in abundance during development and a second cluster of 400 proteins that decreased in abundance during development, with most significant changes at the time of EGA and blastocyst formation. The main pathways and processes overrepresented among upregulated proteins were RNA metabolism, protein translation and ribosome biogenesis, whereas Golgi vesicle transport and protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum were overrepresented among downregulated proteins. The pairwise comparison between stages allowed us to identify specific protein interaction networks and metabolic pathways at the time of EGA, morula compaction and blastocyst formation. This is the first comprehensive study of proteome dynamics in non-rodent mammalian embryos developed in vivo. These data provide a number of protein candidates that will be useful for further mechanistic and functional studies.

Abstract: Outbreaks of the corallivorous starfish Acanthaster cf. solaris (COTS) are not fully understood, especially in the shallowest areas behind the reef crests where limited COTS impacts are often reported. Here, we investigated the outbreak occurrence and compared post-outbreak habitat impacts in reef flats vs. upper fore reefs at 13 sites in New Caledonia. In this Pacific territory so far considered marginally affected by COTS, we documented wide occurrences of aggregations, combining massive population increases (maximum 605 COTS per swim, abundances >100 COTS recorded in 46% of the sites) with limited spatiotemporal boundaries. Abundance levels met the highest values in the literature, but were restricted to relatively small, isolated mid-shelf reefs. Typical residence time was short (< two years), with at least one site where COTS seemingly disappeared within seven months. The spread of COTS population and subsequent impacts appeared self-contained, and never affected the reef flats (0.5–1.5 m). The transition to severely affected fore reefs was abrupt, with live coral cover divided by nine and morphological diversity halved within a very few meters (3–5 m). We suggest that these differential impacts likely result from harsh environmental conditions making shallow, coral-rich areas less suitable for COTS, thereby pushing predation pressure further downwards.

Abstract: International audience; Drug survival reflects treatment effectiveness and safety in real life. There is limited data on the variation of drug survival with the availability of systemic treatments with additional biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) or synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (sDMARDs). The aim of this study was to determine whether the increasing number of available systemic treatments for psoriasis affects drug survival over time. Patients were selected from the PsoBioTeq cohort, a French prospective observational cohort enrolling patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. All patients initiating a first bDMARD or sDMARD were included. The primary outcome was comparison of drug survival over time. A multivariate Cox proportional hazard ratio model was computed. A total of 1,866 patients were included; 739 females (39%), median age 47 years. In the multivariate Cox model, no association was found between the calendar year of initiation and drug survival (hazard ratio) over-lapping from 0.80 (0.42–1.52) to 1.17 (0.64–2.17), p = 0.633). In conclusion, drug survival in psoriasis is not affected by the year of initiation.

Abstract: ObjectivesThis study aimed to estimate the prevalence of psychoactive substance (PAS) use in night-shift healthcare workers (NSHW) during France’s first COVID-19 wave (March–May 2020).DesignObservational cross-sectional online survey.Setting39 public hospitals in the Assitance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) network in the Parisian area.ParticipantsA total of 1238 nurses, assistant nurses, X-ray technicians, managers, lab technicians, midwives and childcare assistants working at night or alternating between days and nights answered the questionnaire.InterventionOnline survey.Outcome measuresPAS use prevalence after weighting data for sex, age and profession using calibration on margins, in order to be representative of all AP-HP NSHW. We used the Fagerström scale and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Concise to assess PAS use.ResultsThe weighted estimated prevalences of daily smoking, alcohol drinking and tranquilliser use in participating NSHW were 21.4, 1.3 and 2.4%, respectively. Twelve per cent (11.7%) of our study sample used opioids. During the first COVID-19 wave, PAS use remained stable except for tobacco use, with 8.6% of participants reporting an increase. Previous 3-month prevalences of tranquilliser and opioid use were significantly higher than in the general population.ConclusionDaily smoking (especially in younger men) and tranquilliser and opioid use were highly prevalent in NSHW in the AP-HP network during France’s first COVID-19 wave. Specific interventions for quitting smoking and addressing determinants of tranquilliser and opioid use in NSHW need to be developed and evaluated to improve quality of life in these essential, underdiagnosed and undertreated health personnel.

Abstract: The objective of this thesis is the sustainable management of a fishery resource, with the example of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams and Reeve, 1850) in the Berre lagoon (France). To adapt a fishery management model, it is necessary to improve the knowledge on this species in the Berre Pond based on in situ experiments. The 〖SL〗_50 is 20 - 23 mm. Clams spawn between March and October when water temperatures are above 11°C. VBGF parameters are L∞=35,70 mm and K=〖3,90.10〗^(-3) 〖days〗^(-1). Natural mortality ranged from 0.64 and 2.85 〖days〗^(-1) depending on the size of the individuals, predation and disease were negligible. In 2019, abundance was 552.07 million individuals for a biomass of 2,903.62 tons (between 0 and 5 m); with a strong disparity in distribution: two areas accounted for 69% of total abundance and 80% of total biomass. These areas, monitored regularly, show a decrease in abundance of 10%, probably due to poaching. Foot fishing was addressed through counts. All of these in situ data are integrated into a management model that includes an individual DEB model feeding a population model in three size categories (juvenile, adult between 20 and 30 mm and adult with mesh size). The model allows for the comparison of professional fishing scenarios and assists in decision making. The methodology developed in this thesis can be transposed to other species and environment pairs. The originality of this thesis is to have carried out all these works in parallel. Each study was fed by the others and vice versa.; La gestion durable des espèces halieutiques des zones côtières est mondialementreconnue comme étant une question primordiale (Pastres et al., 2001). Les mesures degestions permettent de répondre à trois objectifs principaux : la gestion du stock, la luttecontre le déclin du volume de pêche et l’utilisation efficace des zones de pêches (Uchida &Wilen, 2004). Ces mesures de gestion peuvent être de plusieurs types et être décidées àdifférents niveaux (européen, national, régional ou encore local).L’Union Européenne a pris la décision qu’au plus tard en 2020, « les stocks devraient êtreexploités à un niveau qui leur permette de produire le rendement maximal durable pour lelong terme », c’est-à-dire que le stock est exploité au maximum sans affecter lerenouvellement du futur stock (Anonyme, 2016). Cependant, à l’échelle mondiale, lespêcheries sont en déclin en raison de la surexploitation des stocks, mais également d’unmanque de connaissances scientifiques et des méthodes d’évaluations et de gestionsincertaines (Bald et al., 2009).Pourtant, la réglementation de la pêche permet de maximiser le rendement à long terme(Andersen, 1982 in Nielsen & Vedsmand, 1999). Pour être efficaces, les mesures de gestiondoivent être prises dans un principe de cogestion avec l’ensemble des acteurs impliqués(Nielsen & Vedsmand, 1999 ; Uchida & Wilen, 2004) et également s’appuyer sur desconnaissances scientifiques du milieu et de l’espèce ou des espèces concernées (Caill-Milly,2012). La gestion du stock peut être améliorée avec l’utilisation d’un modèle, intégrant lesdonnées sur la dynamique de population de l’espèce et son environnement (Dang, 2009).

Abstract: The authors investigated the agreement between StepWatch3™ (SW3) and ActiGraph™ wGT3X+ monitors for measuring step-based metrics in patients with peripheral artery disease and older adults. In 23 patients with peripheral artery disease and 38 older participants, the authors compared the metrics obtained during an outdoor (400-m track) walking session (step count) and a 7-day free-living period (step count and 60/30/5/1-min maximal or peak step accumulation) using the SW3 (ankle) and the wGT3X+ (hip) with the low-frequency extension filter enabled (wGT3X+/LFE) or not (wGT3X+/N). Abstract: In every liter of seawater there are between 10 and 100 billion life forms, mostly invisible, called marine plankton or marine microbiome, which form the largest and most dynamic ecosystem on our planet, at the heart of global ecological and economic processes. While physical and chemical parameters of planktonic ecosystems are fairly well measured and modeled at the planetary scale, biological data are still scarce due to the extreme cost and relative inflexibility of the classical vessels and instruments used to explore marine biodiversity. Here we introduce ‘Plankton Planet’, an initiative whose goal is to engage the curiosity and creativity of researchers, makers, and mariners to (i) co-develop a new generation of cost-effective (frugal) universal scientific instrumentation to measure the genetic and morphological diversity of marine microbiomes in context, (ii) organize their systematic deployment through coastal or open ocean communities of sea-users/farers, to generate uniform plankton data across global and long-term spatio-temporal scales, and (iii) setup tools to flow the data without embargo into public and explorable databases. As proof-of-concept, we show how 20 crews of sailors were able to sample plankton biomass from the world surface ocean in a single year, generating the first seatizen-based, planetary dataset of marine plankton biodiversity based on DNA barcodes. The quality of this dataset is comparable to that generated by Tara Oceans and is not biased by the multiplication of samplers. The data unveil significant genetic novelty and can be used to explore the taxonomic and ecological diversity of plankton at both regional and global scales. This pilot project paves the way for construction of a miniaturized, modular, evolvable, affordable and open-source citizen field-platform that will allow systematic assessment of the eco/morpho/genetic variation of aquatic ecosystems and microbiomes across the dimensions of the Earth system.

Un total de 1091 individus, appartenant à 9 espèces de poissons osseux bentho-pélagiques de différents compartiments d’habitats coralliens et profonds (Aphareus rutilans, Cephalopholis aurantia, Epinephelus fasciatus, Etelis carbunculus, Lutjanus kasmira, Lutjanus notatus, Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus, Pristipomoides filamentosus, Variola albimarginata) a été analysé et comparé entre 10 zones réparties autour de la Réunion. Pour décrire la forme externe de l’otolithe, les descripteurs elliptiques de Fourier normalisés ont été extraits. Pour chaque espèce, l’analyse des données de forme a été réalisée en 2 étapes en regardant premièrement les effets potentiels de facteurs confondants que sont la taille du poisson, la symétrie des otolithes droit et gauche, le dimorphisme sexuel et la répartition spatiale. Lorsque ce dernier était significatif sur la forme de l’otolithe, une deuxième étape couplant deux analyses complémentaires a été effectuée avec le regroupement hiérarchique (apprentissage automatique non supervisé) et l'analyse discriminante linéaire (LDA) avec prédiction jacknifed (apprentissage automatique supervisé) permettant de caractériser les limites des potentiels stocks pour chacune des espèces traitées. Les résultats montrent que pour les 9 espèces traitées, seules 2 espèces profondes (Etelis carbunculus et Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus) montrent une structuration spatiale autour de l’île de la Réunion avec pour chacune d’elles, 2 stocks potentiellement séparés par un axe Nord-Ouest/Sud-Est. Ces résultats montrent que pour certaines espèces, l’île de La Réunion peut présenter des sous-populations locales.

Abstract: Fisheries management is generally based on age structure models. This fish ageing data for these models is collected by experts who analyze and interpret the surface of calcifiedstructures (scales, vertebrae, fin rays, otoliths, etc.). The otolith, in the inner ear of the fish, is the main calcified structure used because it is metabolically inert and contains information throughout the whole life of the fish. Each year, nearly one million otoliths are collected worldwide, including 35 000 in France, to provide age data for all commercial species. This traditional method to determine age is therefore very time consuming. Image analysis can be a low-cost alternative method; however, the first step is the transformation of routinely taken otolith images into standardized images within a database to apply machine learning on the ageing data. Otolith shape, resulting from the synthesis of genetic heritage and environmental effects, is a useful tool to identify populations, therefore a database of standardized images could be used for this goal. From the routinely measured otolith data of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) in the eastern English Channel collected from 2010 to 2019, all methodological steps were developed under R environment. A greyscale images matrix was generated from the raw images in different formats. Contour detection was applied to identify broken otoliths, the orientation of each otolith, and the number of otoliths per image. To finalize this standardization process, all images were resized and binarized. Several mathematical morphology tools were developed from these new images to align and to orient the images, placing the otoliths in the same layout for each image. For this study, 8 683 standardized right whole otoliths were extracted from 11 274 routine images. This method could be used on multiple species for age determination and stock identification.

Abstract: ContextAnkle-brachial index (ABI) and toe-brachial index (TBI) are the recommended tests for the diagnosis of lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) and the assessment of its severity, whereas Doppler ultrasound (DUS) is usually used to localize vascular lesions. However, the performance of DUS as an alternative to TBI and ABI measurement is unknown.ObjectiveThe goals were (i) to evaluate the correlation between DUS parameters of distal arteries of the lower extremities with TBI in patients with PAD; (ii) to evaluate the correlation between DUS parameters of distal arteries with ABI; and (iii) to assess the diagnostic accuracy of maximal acceleration time of pedal arteries to detect toe pressure ≤30 mmHg.MethodsAn observational retrospective study was conducted for 1 year on patients with the diagnosis of PAD on DUS. Demographic data, ABI, TBI, and DUS parameters of the dorsal pedis and lateral plantar arteries (DPA and LPA) were recorded.ResultsSeventy-seven patients with 88 limbs were included, aged 69 [interquartile range: 11 years] with 28.6% of diabetic patients. The highest acceleration time of either DPA or LPA (ATmax) was the most correlated to TBI on both univariate (r = −0.78, p < 0.0001) and multivariate analysis (p < 0.0001). DUS parameters had a weaker correlation with ABI. ATmax > 215 ms showed high diagnosis accuracy to a toe pressure of 30 mmHg or less [sensitivity of 86% [0.57–0.98] and negative predictive value of 97% [0.89–1.00]].ConclusionATmax demonstrates a high correlation with TBI in patients with PAD, and high diagnostic accuracy for detection of critical limb ischemia. Based on these results, ATmax can represent the next step in evaluating PAD severity with DUS, in patients with advanced lower extremity PAD.

Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging teratogenic arbovirus that persists in semen and is sexually transmitted. We previously demonstrated that ZIKV infects the human testis and persists in testicular germ cells (TGCs) for several months after patients’ recovery. To decipher the mechanisms underlying prolonged ZIKV replication in TGCs, we compared the innate immune response of human testis explants and isolated TGCs to ZIKV and to Poly(I:C), a viral RNA analog. Our results demonstrate the weak innate responses of human testis to both ZIKV and Poly(I:C) as compared with other tissues or species. TGCs failed to up-regulate antiviral effectors and type I IFN upon ZIKV or Poly(I:C) stimulation, which might be due to a tight control of PRR signaling, as evidenced by the absence of activation of the downstream effector IRF3 and elevated expression of repressors. Importantly, exogenous IFNβ boosted the innate immunity of TGCs and inhibited ZIKV replication in the testis ex vivo, raising hopes for the prevention of ZIKV infection and persistence in this organ.

35. Deciphering field-based evidences for crop allelopathy in weed regulation

Abstract: It is now essential to reduce the negative impacts of weed management and especiallyherbicide use. Weed-suppressive crop species/varieties hold promise for integrated andsustainable weed regulation. Competition for resources and allelopathy are the two mainunderlying mechanisms. Unlike competition, which is well studied and established, allelopathyby living crops remains a contentious mechanism. Although it is recognized that plants emit alarge number of substances, the effective role of these molecules is very challenging todemonstrate in the field. A major difficulty to dissociate the effects of allelopathy from thoseof competition for resources.Here we systematically and quantitatively review the literature, searching for field-basedevidence of the role of allelopathy (by root exudation of living crops) in weed regulation,independently of competition. A focus is made on studies comparing different varieties of agiven species, in order to help disentangling the effects of allelopathy from those ofcompetition. Our critical literature analysis also aims to identify weaknesses and strengths inmethodology, providing insights on optimal experimental designs and avenues for futureresearch.Our analysis shows that, in most articles, the role of crop competition is disregarded or notexhaustively studied. Consequently, contrary to authors’ conclusions, it cannot be determinedwhether weed regulation is due to allelopathy and/or competition. Overall, only 25 articlesstudied the differential effects of crop varieties on weed pressure in the field, explicitlyconsidering allelopathy and competition. Among them, 13 articles considered that bothallelopathy and competition explained varietal differences in weed regulation in the field, andfive articles identified allelopathy as the only explicative mechanism.In order to assess an effective role of allelopathy, we conducted a detailed analysis of these18 articles reporting an effect of allelopathy (alone or combined with competition). Wecombined a qualitative (relevance of experimental designs and protocols) and quantitativeapproach (range of variation of the measured variables, correlation analysis). Among thesearticles, only seven could provide convincing field-based evidence of allelopathy. The mostconvincing evidence was provided when combining several methods (field measurements onweeds and crop varieties and assessment of allelopathic potential in field or laboratory, linkedby a multiple regression), when results are consistent. However, although these seven articleswere convincing, we discussed some methodological weaknesses.129To further investigate allelopathy in the field we recommend to (i) finely characterize cropcompetition by measuring traits in the field, (ii) assess crop allelopathic potential withComplementary experiments in controlled conditions or by quantifying allelochemicals in thefield, and (iii) quantify the contribution of each studied trait/mechanism in explaining weedregulation in the field with multiple regression models. Abstract: Heterotrophic protists (unicellular eukaryotes) form a major link from bacteria and algae to higher trophic levels in the sunlit ocean. Their role on the deep seafloor, however, is only fragmentarily understood, despite their potential key function for global carbon cycling. Using the approach of combined DNA metabarcoding and cultivation-based surveys of 11 deep-sea regions, we show that protist communities, mostly overlooked in current deep-sea foodweb models, are highly specific, locally diverse and have little overlap to pelagic communities. Besides traditionally considered foraminiferans, tiny protists including diplonemids, kinetoplastids and ciliates were genetically highly diverse considerably exceeding the diversity of metazoans. Deep-sea protists, including many parasitic species, represent thus one of the most diverse biodiversity compartments of the Earth system, forming an essential link to metazoans., Alexandra Schoenle et al. use DNA metabarcoding and cultivation-based surveys of 11 regions in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans encompassing the bathyal, abyssal, and hadal zones to identify the role of deep-sea heterotrophic protists relative to other trophic levels. Their results demonstrate that protistan species richness was locally specific and greater than that of metazoans and that measured in pelagic samples, and that deep-sea protist communities are relatively distinct from their pelagic counterparts.

Abstract: Major seasonal community reorganizations and associated biomass variations are landmarks of plankton ecology. However, the processes determining marine species and community turnover rates have not been fully elucidated so far. Here, we analyse patterns of planktonic protist community succession in temperate latitudes, based on quantitative taxonomic data from both microscopy counts and ribosomal DNA metabarcoding from plankton samples collected biweekly over 8 years (2009-2016) at the SOMLIT-Astan station (Roscoff, Western English Channel). Considering the temporal structure of community dynamics (creating temporal correlation), we elucidated the recurrent seasonal pattern of the dominant species and OTUs (rDNA-derived taxa) that drive annual plankton successions. The use of morphological and molecular analyses in combination allowed us to assess absolute species abundance while improving taxonomic resolution, and revealed a greater diversity. Overall, our results underpinned a protist community characterised by a seasonal structure, which is supported by the dominant OTUs. We detected that some were partly benthic as a result of the intense tidal mixing typical of the French coasts in the English Channel. While the occurrence of these microorganisms is driven by the physical and biogeochemical conditions of the environment, internal community processes, such as the complex network of biotic interactions, also play a key role in shaping protist communities.

A new shaped Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is proposed to suppress such waves in between elements. A low dimensional μ shaped DGS is carved out in between two E-plane patch antennas to reduce considerably the amount of coupled power and effectively improve return loss and impedance bandwidth of antenna elements. Abstract: International audience; L’évolution de la céramique en Petite Seine a fait l’objet d’une analyse sur la longue durée, de la fin de l’époque gauloise au début du Moyen Âge, au traversdes questions de la production et donc des ateliers, et de la distribution des produits régionaux et céramiques exogènes. Elle a permis de mettre en valeur des réseaux à plusieurs échelles et des pôles d’attraction différenciés. Le couloir de la Seine apparaît comme structurant à l’échelle régionale, de la civitas gauloise sénonaise au comté de Troyes avec toujours, la persistance de deux pôles assez prononcés, à l’est autour de la zone de confluence Seine-Yonne, et à l’ouest dans la plaine de Troyes. L’intégration au grand commerce centré sur la Méditerranée est précoce, notamment dans la zone de confluence. Les échanges avec les régions septentrionales de la Gaule, le territoire belge des Rèmes en particulier, sont réguliers et denses mais, à tous les niveaux, un phénomène de « frontière » se marque particulièrement vers le nord et l’est de la vallée de la Seine. Abstract: International audience; Seven new archeointensity data are obtained through the analysis of groups of pottery and kiln fragments from ceramic workshops unearthed in France, precisely dated from the High Middle Ages. The measurements are carried out using the Triaxe magnetometer, following a dedicated experimental protocol that takes into account the effects of anisotropy and cooling rate (CR) on thermoremanent magnetization acquisition. The new data are consistent with the evolution of intensity variations described by our previous data obtained in France and Northern Italy, which display between the 5th and 10th c. a pronounced camel-back shape. In particular, they provide supporting evidence of an intensity minimum that occurred around the transition between the 7th and 8th century. These data, combined with a selection of previously published results within a 700 km radius of Beaune and re-examined based on CR correction, formed the basis of new regional mean intensity variation curves based on two independent modeling approaches. The first algorithm developed by Thébault and Gallet (2010) based on bootstrapping and now irregularly spaced knots according to the data distribution gives rather smooth intensity variations, while the second approach proposed by Livermore et al (2018) based on a transdimensional Bayesian technique shows more abrupt variations with sometimes stronger amplitudes. We explore the dating potential of these two variations curves, which have an unprecedented resolution, by studying two medieval pottery workshops. Six fragment groups (three per workshop) are analyzed using the Triaxe protocol, providing mean archeointensity values for each of the two sites. Two different procedures are used for their dating, either by comparing the intensity value to be dated with the reference intensity variation curves obtained from the two modeling techniques or by analyzing the marginal posterior probability distribution of the age values derived from the method of Livermore et al (2018). For France, the two techniques yield very similar results. The archeointensity dating results combined with archeological arguments and radiocarbon data, make it possible to better constrain the age of the end of activity of the two workshops. Archeointensity investigation of displaced materials thus appears as an effective means to obtain original chronological constraints on the age of their production, paving the way for a wide range of complementary research on Medieval pottery.

Abstract: AIMS: The aim of this study is to compare the Hestia rule vs. the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) for triaging patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) for home treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Normotensive patients with PE of 26 hospitals from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland were randomized to either triaging with Hestia or sPESI. They were designated for home treatment if the triaging tool was negative and if the physician-in-charge, taking into account the patient's opinion, did not consider that hospitalization was required. The main outcomes were the 30-day composite of recurrent venous thrombo-embolism, major bleeding or all-cause death (non-inferiority analysis with 2.5% absolute risk difference as margin), and the rate of patients discharged home within 24 h after randomization (NCT02811237). From January 2017 through July 2019, 1975 patients were included. In the per-protocol population, the primary outcome occurred in 3.82% (34/891) in the Hestia arm and 3.57% (32/896) in the sPESI arm (P = 0.004 for non-inferiority). In the intention-to-treat population, 38.4% of the Hestia patients (378/984) were treated at home vs. 36.6% (361/986) of the sPESI patients (P = 0.41 for superiority), with a 30-day composite outcome rate of 1.33% (5/375) and 1.11% (4/359), respectively. No recurrent or fatal PE occurred in either home treatment arm. CONCLUSIONS: For triaging PE patients, the strategy based on the Hestia rule and the strategy based on sPESI had similar safety and effectiveness. Abstract: International audience; Economic and environmental sustainability is a major concern for pig production systems (PPS). Previous studies showed that formulating low-impact diets using a carbon tax could decrease the climate change (CC) impact of pigfattening units. However, they did not consider the effect of interactions between feed formulas, feeding and shipping strategies (FFSS) on the environmental impacts of pig production. Consequently, the objective of this study was to investigate effects of a carbon tax on economically optimized FFSS and the resulting economic and environmental performances. We used a bi-level optimization model in which the upper level represents a bioeconomic model that simulates the growth of a batch of pigs and optimizes both the amino acid contents in growing and finishing feeds, the level of feed supply, and the shipping strategy. The lower level represents a linear least-cost feed formulation. The model’s behaviour was investigated in four contexts of recent feed and pork prices (low price: L and high price: H; feed: F and pork: P) at different carbon tax level. Optimized FFSS were highly sensitive to both the economic context and the carbon tax level. Without carbon tax, CC impact was lower in LF-LP than in the other economic contexts. With HF, the optimal amino acid contents and feed supply decreased as tax level increased. With LF, the optimal amino acid contents in the finishing diet increased as tax level increased, to improve feed conversion ratio. With increasing tax level, peas and cereal by-products were replaced with cereals and oil meals in pig diets. The highest potential of CC mitigation was obtained with HF-LP context, whereas LF-LP context had the lowest potential of CC mitigation because it resulted in low CC impact, even without application of a carbon tax. Optimizing both levels (FFSS) while applying a carbon tax decreased CC by up to 43% and saved up to 26% of income compared to FFSS optimized without carbon tax. This model provides a valuable tool to investigate the adaptation potential of PPS to the application of a carbon tax.

Abstract: Research in second language (L2) learning often considers one modality only during task completion. It is unclear if L2 performance is as accurate whatever the modality. L2 learning at school is characterized by a predominance of written materials. One might expect written L2 word recognition to be more accurate than spoken one. This modality effect could also depend on L2 proficiency and the presence of cognate items, closer orthographically than phonologically for most language pairs. Two experiments were conducted with 50 intermediate proficiency French–English bilinguals. Experiment 1 highlighted this modality effect on accuracy and a session effect reflecting a benefit from oral to written modality on latency. In Experiment 2, which included both cognate and non-cognate words, modality effect was even stronger for cognate words and cognate effect depended on modality. In both experiments, these effects depend on L2 proficiency. These findings are discussed according to bilingual word recognition models.

Abstract: In vitro fertilization (IVF) gives rise to embryos in a number of mammalian species and is currently widely used for assisted reproduction in humans and for genetic purposes in cattle. However, the rate of polyspermy is generally higher in vitro than in vivo and IVF remains ineffective in some domestic species like pigs and horses, highlighting the importance of the female reproductive tract for gamete quality and fertilization. In this review, the way the female environment modulates sperm selective migration, survival, and acquisition of fertilizing ability in the oviduct is being considered under six aspects: (1) the utero-tubal junction that selects a sperm sub-population entering the oviduct; (2) the presence of sperm binding sites on luminal epithelial cells in the oviduct, which prolong sperm viability and plays a role in limiting polyspermic fertilization; (3) the contractions of the oviduct, which promote sperm migration toward the site of fertilization in the ampulla; (4) the regions of the oviduct, which play different roles in regulating sperm physiology and interactions with oviduct epithelial cells; (5) the time of ovulation, and (6) the steroid hormonal environment which regulates sperm release from the luminal epithelial cells and facilitates capacitation in a finely orchestrated manner., After mating or insemination, the region-specific and hormonally regulated morphology and secretions of the utero-tubal junction and oviduct lead to the selection of a limited sub-population of top quality spermatozoa at the site of fertilization.

Abstract: Background One year after the declaration of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and despite the implementation of mandatory physical barriers and social distancing, humanity remains challenged by a long-lasting and devastating public health crisis. Management Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) are efficient mitigation strategies. The success of these NPIs is dependent on the approval and commitment of the population. The launch of a mass vaccination program in many countries in late December 2020 with mRNA vaccines, adenovirus-based vaccines, and inactivated virus vaccines has generated hope for the end of the pandemic. Current Issues The continuous appearance of new pathogenic viral strains and the ability of vaccines to prevent infection and transmission raise important concerns as we try to achieve community immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants. The need of a second and even third generation of vaccines has already been acknowledged by the WHO and governments. Perspectives There is a critical and urgent need for a balanced and integrated strategy for the management of the COVID-19 outbreaks organized on three axes: (1) Prevention of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, (2) Detection and early diagnosis of patients at risk of disease worsening, and (3) Anticipation of medical care (PDA). Conclusion The “PDA strategy” integrated into state policy for the support and expansion of health systems and introduction of digital organizations (i.e., telemedicine, e-Health, artificial intelligence, and machine-learning technology) is of major importance for the preservation of citizens' health and life world-wide.

Abstract: Metabarcoding of microbial eukaryotes (collectively known as protists) has developed tremendously in the last decade, almost uniquely relying on the 18S rRNA gene. As microbial eukaryotes are extremely diverse, many primers and primer pairs have been developed. To cover a relevant and representative fraction of the protist community in a given study system, a wise primer choice is needed as no primer pair can target all protists equally well. As such, a smart primer choice is very difficult even for experts and there are very few on-line resources available to list existing primers. We built a database listing 179 primers and 76 primer pairs that have been used for eukaryotic 18S rRNA metabarcoding. In silico performance of primer pairs was tested against two sequence databases: PR2 for eukaryotes and a subset of Silva for prokaryotes. This allowed to determine the taxonomic specificity of primer pairs, the location of mismatches as well as amplicon size. We developed a R-based web application that allows to browse the database, visualize the taxonomic distribution of the amplified sequences with the number of mismatches, and to test any user-defined primer set (https://app.pr2-primers.org). This tool will provide the basis for guided primer choices that will help a wide range of ecologists to implement protists as part of their investigations.

Abstract: National audience; Nous montrerons que l’utilisation de technologies connues et propres à la photonique intégrée résonante a permis d’apporter des solutions innovantes aux mesures des processus dynamiques de la matière molle et d’apporter de nouvelles réponses aux industriels de la cosmétique, de l’agroalimentaire et de la pharmacologie galénique. Nous présenterons quelques voies de recherche et développement en circuits photoniques résonants de surface mis en forme sur matériaux organiques sub-longueur d’onde. Nous développerons plus précisément deux applications respectivement en biologie puis cosmétique et agroalimentaire concernant les mesures de transitions de phases en physique de la matière molle. La première transition de la sphingomyéline (lipide) est du 1er ordre (gelfluide) présentant ainsi une variation d’enthalpie, la 2d une transition de phase d’acides gras est quant à elle morphologique et structurelle (tubulairesmicelles). L’ensemble des mesures photoniques et interprétations seront corroborées avec les mesures parallèles effectuées en rhéologie (viscosité), en calorimétrie différentielle (changement d’état et mesure d’enthalpie), puis en analyses Raman et microscopie AFM propres aux physico-chimistes et industriels.
