Abstract

With its capacity to observe $\sim 10^{5-6}$ faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) out to redshift $z\approx 6$, Roman is poised to reveal a population of $10^{4-6}\, {\rm M_\odot}$ black holes during an epoch of vigorous galaxy assembly. By measuring the light curves of a subset of these AGN and looking for periodicity, Roman can identify several hundred massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) with 5-12 day orbital periods, which emit copious gravitational radiation and will inevitably merge on timescales of $10^{3-5}$ years. During the last few months of their merger, such binaries are observable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a joint ESA/NASA gravitational wave mission set to launch in the mid-2030s. Abstract

We search for a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) generated by a network of cosmic strings using six millisecond pulsars from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA). We perform a Bayesian analysis considering two models for the network of cosmic string loops, and compare it to a simple power-law model which is expected from the population of supermassive black hole binaries. Our main strong assumption is that the previously reported common red noise process is a SGWB. We find that the one-parameter cosmic string model is slightly favored over a power-law model thanks to its simplicity. If we assume a two-component stochastic signal in the data (supermassive black hole binary population and the signal from cosmic strings), we get a $95\%$ upper limit on the string tension of $\log_{10}(Gμ) < -9.9$ ($-10.5$) for the two cosmic string models we consider. In extended two-parameter string models, we were unable to constrain the number of kinks. We test two approximate and fast Bayesian data analysis methods against the most rigorous analysis and find consistent results. These two fast and efficient methods are applicable to all SGWBs, independent of their source, and will be crucial for analysis of extended data sets., 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to general relativity at cosmic scales. We focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller nonlinear scales. We consider 3 specific models, namely Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD), the normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) gravity and $k$-mouflage (KM) gravity. We provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the extra parameters of the models, respectively, $\omega_{\rm BD}$, $\Omega_{\rm rc}$ and $\epsilon_{2,0}$, which quantify the deviations from general relativity. This analysis will improve our knowledge of the cosmology of these modified gravity models. The forecasts analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GC$_{ph}$); spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GC$_{sp}$) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GC$_{ph}$ and WL. For the Euclid survey specifications we define three scenarios, characterised by different cuts in $\ell$ and $k$, to assess the constraining power of nonlinear scales. For each model we consider two fiducial values for the corresponding model parameter. In an optimistic setting at 68.3\% confidence interval, with Euclid alone we find the following percentage relative errors: for $\log_{10}{\omega_{\rm BD}}$, with a fiducial value of $\omega_{\rm BD}=800$, 35% using GC$_{sp}$ alone, 3.6% using GC$_{ph}$+WL+XC and 3.3% using GC$_{ph}$+WL+XC+GC$_{sp}$; for $\log_{10}{\Omega_{\rm rc}}$, with a fiducial value of $\Omega_{\rm rc}=0.25$, we find respectively 90%, 20% and 17%; finally, for $\epsilon_{2,0}=-0.04$ respectively 5%, 0.15% and 0.14%. Abstract

$\textit{Euclid}$ will provide a powerful compilation of data including spectroscopic redshifts, the angular clustering of galaxies, weak lensing cosmic shear, and the cross-correlation of these last two photometric observables. In this study we extend recently presented $\textit{Euclid}$ forecasts into the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ cosmological model, a popular extension of the Hilbert-Einstein action that introduces an universal modified gravity force in a scale-dependent way. Our aim is to estimate how well future $\textit{Euclid}$ data will be able to constrain the extra parameter of the theory, $f_{R0}$, for the range in which this parameter is still allowed by current observations. For the spectroscopic probe, we use a phenomenological approach for the scale dependence of the growth of perturbations in the terms related to baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions. For the photometric observables, we use a fitting formula that captures the modifications in the non-linear matter power spectrum caused by the $f(R)$ model. We show that, in an optimistic setting, and for a fiducial value of $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$, $\textit{Euclid}$ alone will be able to constrain the additional parameter $\log f_{R0}$ at the $3\%$ level, using spectroscopic galaxy clustering alone; at the $1.4\%$ level, using the combination of photometric probes on their own; and at the $1\%$ level, using the combination of spectroscopic and photometric observations. This last constraint corresponds to an error of the order of $6 \times 10^{-7}$ at the $1\sigma$ level on the model parameter $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-6}$. We report also forecasted constraints for $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-5}$ and $f_{R0} = 5 \times 10^{-7}$ and show that in the optimistic scenario, $\textit{Euclid}$ will be able to distinguish these models from $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ at more than 3$\sigma$. Abstract

We investigate the imprints of accretion and dynamical friction on the gravitational-wave signals emitted by binary black holes embedded in a scalar dark matter cloud. As a key feature in this work, we focus on scalar fields with a repulsive self-interaction that balances against the self-gravity of the cloud. To a first approximation, the phase of the gravitational-wave signal receives extra correction terms at $-4$PN and $-5.5$PN orders, relative to the prediction of vacuum general relativity, due to accretion and dynamical friction, respectively. Future observations by LISA and B-DECIGO have the potential to detect these effects for a large range of scalar masses~$m_\mathrm{DM}$ and self-interaction couplings~$\lambda_4$; observations by ET and Advanced~LIGO could also detect these effects, albeit in a more limited region of parameter space. Crucially, we find that even if a dark matter cloud has a bulk density~$\rho_0$ that is too dilute to be detected via the effects of dynamical friction, the imprints of accretion could still be observable because it is controlled by the independent scale $\rho_a = 4 m_{\rm DM}^4 c^3/(3 \lambda_4 \hbar^3)$. Abstract

Bulk flow velocities are typically estimated in the idealised picture where observers are moving within a perfectly homogeneous and isotropic space-time. This picture is consistent within standard perturbation theory up to relativistic effects that lead to correction terms of order $v \times z$, where $z$ is the redshift of observation, and $v$ is the amplitude of the bulk flow. The dominant relativistic contributions at scales $z \lesssim 1$ are caused by gravitational redshift and time-evolution of the velocity field. We include these effects within a broadly applicable weak-field approximation, and provide a cosmographic formula for estimating bulk flows at a high precision. Based on this formula, we judge that recent bulk flow estimates are biased towards larger values by $\sim 10\%$. This theoretical bias surpasses the measurement biases of the same estimates, and it will become still more important to account for the relativistic effects as the scales at which bulk flows are estimated increase., Comment: 7 pages

Abstract

Gravitational lensing by massive objects along the line of sight to the source causes distortions of gravitational wave-signals; such distortions may reveal information about fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics. In this work, we have extended the search for lensing signatures to all binary black hole events from the third observing run of the LIGO--Virgo network. We search for repeated signals from strong lensing by 1) performing targeted searches for subthreshold signals, 2) calculating the degree of overlap amongst the intrinsic parameters and sky location of pairs of signals, 3) comparing the similarities of the spectrograms amongst pairs of signals, and 4) performing dual-signal Bayesian analysis that takes into account selection effects and astrophysical knowledge. We also search for distortions to the gravitational waveform caused by 1) frequency-independent phase shifts in strongly lensed images, and 2) frequency-dependent modulation of the amplitude and phase due to point masses. None of these searches yields significant evidence for lensing. Finally, we use the non-detection of gravitational-wave lensing to constrain the lensing rate based on the latest merger-rate estimates and the fraction of dark matter composed of compact objects., 28 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We use the latest constraints on the population of stellar origin binary black holes (SOBBH) from LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) observations, to estimate the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) they generate in the frequency band of LISA. We account for the faint and distant binaries, which contribute the most to the SGWB, by extending the merger rate at high redshift assuming it tracks the star formation rate. We adopt different methods to compute the SGWB signal: an analytical evaluation, Monte Carlo sums over SOBBH population realisations, and a method that accounts for the role of the detector by simulating LISA data and iteratively removing resolvable signals until only the confusion noise is left, allowing for the extraction of both the expected SGWB and the number of resolvable SOBBHs. Since the latter are few for SNR thresholds larger than five, we confirm that the spectral shape of the SGWB in the LISA band follows the analytical prediction of a power law. We infer the probability distribution of the SGWB amplitude from the LVK GWTC-3 posterior of the binary population model; its interquartile range of $h^2\Omega_\mathrm{GW}(f=3\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{Hz}) \in [5.65,\,11.5]\times10^{-13}$ is in agreement with most previous estimates. We perform a MC analysis to assess LISA's capability to detect and characterise this signal. Accounting for both the instrumental noise and the galactic binaries foreground, with four years of data, LISA will be able to detect the SOBBH SGWB with percent accuracy, narrowing down the uncertainty on the amplitude by one order of magnitude with respect to the range of possible amplitudes inferred from the population model. A measurement of this signal by LISA will help to break the degeneracy among some of the population parameters, and provide interesting constraints, in particular on the redshift evolution of the SOBBH merger rate., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures. Abstract

We consider axial (or odd-parity) perturbations of non-spinning hairy black holes (BH) in shift-symmetric DHOST (Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor) theories, including terms quartic and cubic in second derivatives of the scalar field. We give a new formulation of the effective metric in which axial perturbations propagate as in general relativity. We then introduce a generic parametrization of the effective metric in the vicinity of the background BH horizon. Writing the dynamics of the perturbations in terms of a Schr\"odinger-like operator, we discuss in which cases the operator is (essentially) self-adjoint, thus leading to an unambiguous time evolution, according to the choice of parameters characterizing the near-horizon effective metric. This is in particular useful to investigate the stability of the perturbations. We finally illustrate our general analysis with two examples of BH solutions., Comment: 24 pages, 3 appendices

Abstract

Curved-spacetime geometric-optics maps derived from a deep photometric survey should contain information about the three-dimensional matter distribution and thus about cosmic voids in the survey, despite projection effects. We explore to what degree sky-plane geometric-optics maps can reveal the presence of intrinsic three-dimensional voids. We carry out a cosmological $N$-body simulation and place it further than a gigaparsec from the observer, at redshift 0.5. We infer three-dimensional void structures using the watershed algorithm. Independently, we calculate a surface overdensity map and maps of weak gravitational lensing and geometric-optics scalars. We propose and implement a heuristic algorithm for detecting (projected) radial void profiles from these maps. We find in our simulation that given the sky-plane centres of the three-dimensional watershed-detected voids, there is significant evidence of correlated void centres in the surface overdensity $\Sigma$, the averaged weak-lensing tangential shear $\overline{\gamma_\perp}$, the Sachs expansion $\theta$, and the Sachs shear modulus $\lvert\sigma\rvert$. Recovering the centres of the three-dimensional voids from the sky-plane information alone is significant given the weak-lensing shear $\overline{\gamma_\perp}$, the Sachs expansion $\theta$, or the Sachs shear $\lvert\sigma\rvert$, but not significant for the surface overdensity $\Sigma$. Void radii are uncorrelated between three-dimensional and two-dimensional voids; our algorithm is not designed to distinguish voids that are nearly concentric in projection. This investigation shows preliminary evidence encouraging observational studies of gravitational lensing through individual voids, either blind or with spectroscopic/photometric redshifts. Abstract

International audience; Some binary black hole systems potentially observable in LISA could be in orbit around a supermassive black hole (SMBH). The imprint of relativistic three-body effects on the waveform of the binary can be used to estimate all the parameters of the triple system, in particular the mass of the SMBH. We determine the phase shift in the waveform due to the Doppler effect of the SMBH up to second order in velocity, which breaks a well-known exact degeneracy of the lowest-order Doppler effect between the mass of the SMBH and its inclination. We perform several parameter estimations for LISA signals including this additional dephasing in the wave, showing that one can determine accurately all parameters of the three-body system. Our results indicate that one can measure the mass of a $10^8\,$M$_{\odot}$ SMBH with an accuracy better than $\sim 30\%$ (resp. $\sim 15\%$) by monitoring the waveform of a binary system whose period around the SMBH is less 100 yr (resp. 20 yr).

Abstract

The redshift drift (also known as the Sandage Test) is a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, enabling us to watch the universe expand in real time, and thereby to confirm (or not) the recent acceleration of the universe without any model-dependent assumptions. On the other hand, by choosing a fiducial model one can also use it to constrain the model parameters, thereby providing a consistency test for results obtained with other probes. The drift can be measured by the Extremely Large Telescope and also by the full SKA. Recently two alternative measurement methods have been proposed: the cosmic accelerometer, and the differential redshift drift. Here we summarize a comparative analysis of the various methods and their possible outcomes, using both Fisher Matrix and MCMC techniques. We find that no single method is uniformly better than the others. Instead, their comparative performance depends both on experimental parameters (including the experiment time and redshift at which the measurement is made) and also on the scientific goal (e.g., detecting the drift signal with high statistical significance, constraining the matter density, or constraining the dark energy properties). Abstract

Nuclear star clusters, that fragment into metal-poor stars in situ at the centers of protogalaxies, provide ideal environments for the formation of intermediate-mass black holes with masses $10^3-10^6M_\odot$. We utilize the semi-analytic model implemented in Rapster, a public rapid cluster evolution code. We implement simple recipes for stellar collisions and gas accretion/expulsion into the code and identify the regimes where each channel contributes to the dynamical formation of intermediate-mass black holes via repeated mergers of stellar black-hole seeds. We find that intermediate-mass black hole formation is almost inevitable if the initial mean density of the nuclear cluster is $>10^8M_\odot{\rm pc}^{-3}$. Abstract

Upcoming surveys of cosmic structures will probe scales close to the cosmological horizon, which opens up new opportunities for testing the cosmological concordance model to high accuracy. In particular, constraints on the squeezed bispectrum could rule out the single-field hypothesis during inflation. However, the squeezed bispectrum is also sensitive to dynamical effects of general relativity as well as interactions of matter with residual radiation from the early Universe. In this paper, we present a relativistic simulation pipeline that includes these relativistic effects consistently. We produce light cones and calculate the observed number counts of cold dark matter for five redshift bins between $z=0.55$-$2.25$. We compare the relativistic results against reference Newtonian simulations by means of angular power- and bispectra. We find that the dynamical relativistic effects scale roughly inversely proportional to the multipole in the angular power spectrum, with a maximum amplitude of $10\%$ for $\ell \lesssim 5$. By using a smoothing method applied to the binned bispectrum we detect the Newtonian bispectrum with very high significance. The purely relativistic part of the matter bispectrum is detected with a significance of $\sim 3\,\sigma$, mostly limited by cosmic variance. We find that the pure dynamical relativistic effects accounts for up to $3\%$ and $10\%$ of the total amplitude, respectively in the squeezed and equilateral limits. Our relativistic pipeline for modelling ultra-large scales yields gauge-independent results as we compute observables consistently on the past light cone, while the Newtonian treatment employs approximations that leave some residual gauge dependence. Abstract

Based on a formalism introduced in our previous work, we reconstruct the phenomenological function $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ describing deviations from General Relativity (GR) in a model-independent manner. In this alternative approach, we model $\mu\equiv G_\mathrm{eff}/G$ as a Gaussian process and use forecasted growth-rate measurements from a stage-IV survey to reconstruct its shape for two different toy models. We follow a two-step procedure: (i) we first reconstruct the background expansion history from Supernovae (SNe) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements; (ii) we then use it to obtain the growth history $f\sigma_8$, that we fit to redshift-space distortions (RSD) measurements to reconstruct $G_\mathrm{eff}$. We find that upcoming surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) might be capable of detecting deviations from GR, provided the dark energy behavior is accurately determined. We might even be able to constrain the transition redshift from $G\to G_\mathrm{eff}$ for some particular models. We further assess the impact of massive neutrinos on the reconstructions of $G_\mathrm{eff}$ (or $\mu$) assuming the expansion history is given, and only the neutrino mass is free to vary. Given the tight constraints on the neutrino mass, and for the profiles we considered in this work, we recover numerically that the effect of such massive neutrinos does not alter our conclusions. Finally, we stress that incorrectly assuming a $\Lambda$CDM expansion history leads to a degraded reconstruction of $\mu$, and/or a non-negligible bias in the ($\Omega_\mathrm{m,0}$,$\sigma_{8,0}$)-plane., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We study the propagation of cosmological gravitational wave (GW) backgrounds from the early radiation era until the present day in modified theories of gravity. Comparing to general relativity (GR), we study the effects that modified gravity parameters, such as the GW friction $\alpha_{\rm M}$ and the tensor speed excess $\alpha_{\rm T}$, have on the present-day GW spectrum. We use both the WKB estimate, which provides an analytical description but fails at superhorizon scales, and numerical simulations that allow us to go beyond the WKB approximation. We show that a constant $\alpha_{\rm T}$ makes relatively insignificant changes to the GR solution, especially taking into account the constraints on its value from GW observations by the LIGO--Virgo collaboration, while $\alpha_{\rm M}$ can introduce modifications to the spectral slopes of the GW energy spectrum in the low-frequency regime depending on the considered time evolution of $\alpha_{\rm M}$. The latter effect is additional to the damping or growth occurring equally at all scales that can be predicted by the WKB approximation. In light of the recent observations by pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, and the potential observations by future detectors such as SKA, LISA, DECIGO, BBO, or ET, we show that, in most of the cases, constraints cannot be placed on the effects of $\alpha_{\rm M}$ and the initial GW energy density $\mathcal{E}_{\rm GW}^*$ separately, but only on the combined effects of the two, unless the signal is observed at different frequency ranges. The structure and evolution of Primordial Antimatter domains and Dark matter objects are analysed. Relativistic low-density antimatter domains are described. The Relativistic FRW perfect-fluid solution is found for the characterization of i) ultra-high density antimatter domains, ii) high-density antimatter domains, and iii) dense anti-matter domains. The possible sub-domains structures is analyzed. The structures evolved to the time of galaxy formation are outlined. Comparison is given with other primordial celestial objects. The features of antistars are outlined. In the case of WIMP dark matter clumps, the mechanisms of their survival to the present time are discussed. Abstract

Although most gravitational wave events are claimed to be mergers of unusually massive, $25-65M_\odot$, black holes, it is now clear that 20\% of all reported events comprise modest mass black holes, $5-15M_\odot$, like the stellar black holes in the Milky Way. We show that such stellar mass black hole binaries (BBH) if magnified by lensing galaxies can be detected at high redshift, 1$< $z$ 1$. Furthermore, nearly all BBH events are seen to share a component mass ratio of $m_1/m_2=1.45\pm0.03$, indicating a common stellar origin for BBH events across all chirp masses. This observed component mass uniformity implies most binary black holes seldom pair up by random capture, instead we may conclude that massive progenitor stars of BBH black holes typically formed in-situ, in a well defined way over the full span of cosmic time accessed through gravitational lensing., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The resulting pressure cannot be computed perturbatively for large coupling constant and/or large supercooling. We resum the real and virtual emissions at all leading-log orders, both analytically and numerically using a Monte-Carlo simulation. We find that radiated bosons are dominantly soft and that the resulting retarding pressure on relativistic bubble walls is linear both in the Lorentz boost and in the order parameter, up to a log. Abstract

Oscillations in the frequency profile of the stochastic gravitational wave background are a characteristic prediction of small-scale features during inflation. In this paper we present a first investigation of the detection prospects of such oscillations with the upcoming space-based gravitational wave observatory LISA. As a proof of principle, we show for a selection of feature signals that the oscillations can be reconstructed with LISA, employing a method based on principal component analysis. We then perform a Fisher forecast for the parameters describing the oscillatory signal. For a sharp feature we distinguish between the contributions to the stochastic gravitational wave background induced during inflation and in the post-inflationary period, which peak at different frequencies. We find that for the latter case the amplitude of the oscillation is expected to be measurable with $< 10\%$ accuracy if the corresponding peak satisfies $h^2 \Omega_\textrm{GW} \gtrsim 10^{-12}$-$10^{-11}$, while for inflationary-era gravitational waves a detection of the oscillations requires a higher peak amplitude of $h^2 \Omega_\textrm{GW}$, as the oscillations only appear on the UV tail of the spectrum. For a resonant feature the detection prospects with LISA are maximised if the frequency of the oscillation falls into the range $\omega_\textrm{log} = 4$ to $10$. Our results confirm that oscillations in the frequency profile of the stochastic gravitational wave background are a worthwhile target for future detection efforts and offer a key for experimentally testing inflation at small scales., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Bell-inequality violations reveal the presence of quantum correlations between two particles that have interacted and then separated. Their generalisation to quantum fields is necessary to study a number of field-theoretic setups, such as cosmological density fluctuations. In this work, we show how Bell operators can be constructed for quantum fields in real space, and for Gaussian states we compute their expectation value in terms of the field power spectra. We then apply our formalism to a scalar field in de-Sitter space-time. We find that, in spite of the tremendous production of entangled particles with opposite wave momenta on large scales, Bell inequalities are not violated in real space. The reason is that, when considering measurements of a field at two distinct locations in real space, one implicitly traces over the configuration of the field at every other location, leading to a mixed bipartite system. This "effective decoherence" effect is responsible for the erasure of quantum features, and casts some doubts on our ability to reveal the quantum origin of cosmological structures. Abstract

We derive a set of no-go theorems and yes-go examples for the parity-odd primordial trispectrum of curvature perturbations. We work at tree-level in the decoupling limit of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation and assume scale invariance and a Bunch-Davies vacuum. We show that the parity-odd scalar trispectrum vanishes in the presence of any number of scalar fields with arbitrary mass and any parity-odd scalar correlator vanishes in the presence of any number of spinning fields with massless de Sitter mode functions, in agreement with the findings of Liu, Tong, Wang and Xianyu [1]. The same is true for correlators with an odd number of conformally-coupled external fields. We derive these results using both the (boostless) cosmological bootstrap, in particular the Cosmological Optical Theorem, and explicit perturbative calculations. We then discuss a series of yes-go examples by relaxing the above assumptions one at the time. Abstract

We study linear perturbations about non rotating black hole solutions in scalar-tensor theories, more specifically Horndeski theories. We consider two particular theories that admit known hairy black hole solutions. The first one, Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory, contains a Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to a scalar field, and its black hole solution is given as a perturbative expansion in a small parameter that measures the deviation from general relativity. The second one, known as 4-dimensional-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, can be seen as a compactification of higher-dimensional Lovelock theories and admits an exact black hole solution. We study both axial and polar perturbations about these solutions and write their equations of motion as a first-order (radial) system of differential equations, which enables us to study the asymptotic behaviours of the perturbations at infinity and at the horizon following an algorithm we developed recently. For the axial perturbations, we also obtain effective Schr\"odinger-like equations with explicit expressions for the potentials and the propagation speeds. We see that while the Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet solution has well-behaved perturbations, the solution of the 4-dimensional-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory exhibits unusual asymptotic behaviour of its perturbations near its horizon and at infinity, which makes the definition of ingoing and outgoing modes impossible. We argue that the Big Bang can be understood as a type of mirror. We show how reflecting boundary conditions for spinors and higher spin fields are fixed by local Lorentz and gauge symmetry, and how a temporal mirror (like the Bang) differs from a spatial mirror (like the AdS boundary), providing a possible explanation for the observed pattern of left- and right-handed fermions. This is a solicited whitepaper for the Snowmass 2021 community planning exercise. The paper focuses on measurements and science with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The CMB is foundational to our understanding of modern physics and continues to be a powerful tool driving our understanding of cosmology and particle physics. In this paper, we outline the broad and unique impact of CMB science for the High Energy Cosmic Frontier in the upcoming decade. Abstract

General Relativistic effects on the clustering of matter in the universe provide a sensitive probe of cosmology and gravity theories that can be tested with the upcoming generation of galaxy surveys. Here, we present a suite of large volume high-resolution N-body simulations specifically designed to generate light-cone data for the study of relativistic effects on lensing-matter observables. RayGalGroupSims (or in short RayGal) consists of two N-body simulations of $(2625\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc})^3$ volume with $4096^3$ particles of a standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model and a non-standard $w$CDM phantom dark energy model. Light-cone data from the simulations have been generated using a parallel ray-tracing algorithm that has accurately solved billion geodesic equations. Catalogues and maps with relativistic weak-lensing which include post-Born effects, magnification bias (MB) and redshift space distortions (RSD) due to gravitational redshift, Doppler, transverse Doppler, Integrated Sachs-Wolfe/Rees-Sciama effects, are publicly released. Using this dataset, we are able to reproduce the linear and quasi-linear predictions from the Class relativistic code for the 10 (cross-)power spectra (3$\times$2 points) of the matter density fluctuation field and the gravitational convergence at $z=0.7$ and $z=1.8$. We find 1-30\% level contribution from both MB and RSD to the matter power spectrum, while the Fingers-of-God effect is visible at lower redshift in the non-linear regime. MB contributes at the $10-30\%$ level to the convergence power spectrum leading to a deviation between the shear power-spectrum and the convergence power-spectrum. Abstract

In this paper we consider the effects of adding curvature in extended cosmologies involving a free-to-vary neutrino sector and different parametrizations of Dark Energy (DE). We make use of the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization data, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Pantheon type Ia Supernovae data. Our main result is that a non-flat Universe cannot be discarded in light of the current astronomical data, because we find an indication for a closed Universe in most of the DE cosmologies explored in this work. Abstract

Microlensing of extragalactic sources, in particular the probability of significant amplifications, is a potentially powerful probe of the abundance of compact objects outside the halo of the Milky Way. Accurate experimental constraints require an equally accurate theoretical model for the amplification statistics produced by such a population. In this article, we argue that the simplest (strongest-lens) model does not meet this demanding requirement. We thus propose an elaborate practical modelling scheme for extragalactic microlensing. We derive from first principles an expression for the amplification probability that consistently allows for: (i) the coupling between microlenses; (ii) realistic perturbations from the cosmic large-scale structure; (iii) extended-source corrections. An important conclusion is that the external shear applied on the dominant microlens, both by the other lenses and by the large-scale structure, is practically negligible. Yet, the predictions of our approach can still differ by a factor of a few with respect to existing models of the literature. Abstract

We show that a scalar excited state with large occupation numbers during inflation leads to an enhancement of tensor modes and a characteristic pattern of order-one oscillations in the associated stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) sourced during inflation. An effective excited state, i.e. a departure from the Bunch-Davies vacuum, can emerge dynamically as the result of a transient non-adiabatic evolution, e.g. a sharp feature along the inflationary history. We provide an explicit example in a multifield context where the sharp feature triggering the excited state is identified with a strong turn in the inflationary trajectory. En passant, we derive a universal expression for the tensor power spectrum sourced at second order by an arbitrary number of scalar degrees of freedom during inflation, crucially taking into account the nontrivial structure of the Hilbert space in multifield setups. The SGWB sourced during inflation can overcome the standard scalar-induced SGWB sourced at horizon re-entry of the fluctuations after inflation, while being less constrained by perturbativity and backreaction bounds. Abstract

We explore the structure around shell-crossing time of cold dark matter protohaloes seeded by two or three crossed sine waves of various relative initial amplitudes, by comparing Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) up to 10th order to high-resolution cosmological simulations performed with the public Vlasov code ColDICE. Accurate analyses of the density, the velocity, and related quantities such as the vorticity are performed by exploiting the fact that ColDICE can follow locally the phase-space sheet at the quadratic level. To test LPT predictions beyond shell-crossing, we employ a ballistic approximation, which assumes that the velocity field is frozen just after shell-crossing. In the generic case, where the amplitudes of the sine waves are all different, high-order LPT predictions match very well the exact solution, even beyond collapse. As expected, convergence slows down when going from quasi-1D dynamics where one wave dominates over the two others, to the axial-symmetric configuration, where all the amplitudes of the waves are equal. It is also noticed that LPT convergence is slower when considering velocity related quantities. Additionally, the structure of the system at and beyond collapse given by LPT and the simulations agrees very well with singularity theory predictions, in particular with respect to the caustic and vorticity patterns that develop beyond collapse. Abstract

We introduce MAGRATHEA-PATHFINDER, a relativistic ray-tracing framework that can reconstruct the past light cone of observers in cosmological simulations. The code directly computes the 3D trajectory of light rays through the null geodesic equations, with the weak-field limit as its only approximation. This approach offers high levels of versatility while removing the need for many of the standard ray-tracing approximations such as plane-parallel, Born, or multiple-lens. Moreover, the use of adaptive integration steps and interpolation strategies based on adaptive-mesh refinement grids allows MAGRATHEA-PATHFINDER to accurately account for the nonlinear regime of structure formation and fully take advantage of the small-scale gravitational clustering. To handle very large N-body simulations, the framework has been designed as a high-performance computing post-processing tool relying on a hybrid paralleliza-tion that combines MPI tasks with C++11 std::threads. In this paper, we describe how realistic cosmological observables can be computed from numerical simulation using ray-tracing techniques. We discuss in particular the production of simulated catalogues and sky maps that account for all the observational effects considering first-order metric perturbations (such as peculiar velocities, gravitational potential, integrated Sachs-Wolfe, time-delay, and gravitational lensing). We perform convergence tests of our gravitational lensing algorithms and conduct performance benchmarks of the null geodesic integration procedures. MAGRATHEA-PATHFINDER introduces sophisticated ray-tracing tools to make the link between the space of N-body simulations and light-cone observables. Abstract

We review studies on the singularity structure and asymptotic analysis of a 3-brane (flat or curved) embedded in a five-dimensional bulk filled with a `perfect fluid' with an equation of state with the `pressure' and the `density' of the fluid depending on the fifth space coordinate. Regular solutions satisfying positive energy conditions in the bulk exist only in the cases of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1, or of AdS branes for EoS parameter values in suitable intervals. More cases can be found by gluing two regular branches of solutions at the position of the brane. However, only the case of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1 leads to finite Planck mass on the brane and thus localises gravity. In a more recent work, we showed that a way to rectify the previous findings and obtain a solution for a flat brane in a finite range of the EoS parameter, which is both free from finite-distance singularities and compatible with the physical conditions of energy and finiteness of four-dimensional Planck mass, is by introducing a bulk fluid component that satisfies a nonlinear equation of state., 37 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The interpretation of cosmological observations relies on a notion of an average Universe, which is usually considered as the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model. However, inhomogeneities may statistically bias the observational averages with respect to FLRW, notably for distance measurements, due to a number of effects such as gravitational lensing and redshift perturbations. In this article, we review the main known theoretical results on average distance measures in cosmology, based on second-order perturbation theory, and we fill in some of their gaps. We then comprehensively test these theoretical predictions against ray tracing in a high-resolution dark-matter $N$-body simulation. This method allows us to describe the effect of small-scale inhomogeneities deep into the non-linear regime of structure formation on light propagation up to $z=10$. We find that numerical results are in remarkably good agreement with theoretical predictions in the limit of super-sample variance. No unexpectedly large bias originates from very small scales, whose effect is fully encoded in the non-linear power spectrum. Specifically, the directional average of the inverse amplification and the source-averaged amplification are compatible with unity; the change in area of surfaces of constant cosmic time is compatible with zero; the biases on other distance measures, which can reach slightly less than $1\%$ at high redshift, are well understood. Abstract

We present GLADE+, an extended version of the GLADE galaxy catalogue introduced in our previous paper for multimessenger searches with advanced gravitational-wave detectors. GLADE+ combines data from six separate but not independent astronomical catalogues: the GWGC, 2MPZ, 2MASS XSC, HyperLEDA, and WISExSCOSPZ galaxy catalogues, and the SDSS-DR16Q quasar catalogue. To allow corrections of CMB-frame redshifts for peculiar motions, we calculated peculiar velocities along with their standard deviations of all galaxies having $B$-band magnitude data within redshift $z=0.05$ using the "Bayesian Origin Reconstruction from Galaxies" formalism. GLADE+ is complete up to luminosity distance $d_L=47^{+4}_{-2}$ Mpc in terms of the total expected $B$-band luminosity of galaxies, and contains all of the brightest galaxies giving 90\% of the total $B$-band and $K$-band luminosity up to $d_L\simeq 130$ Mpc. We include estimations of stellar masses and individual binary neutron star merger rates for galaxies with $W1$ magnitudes. These parameters can help in ranking galaxies in a given gravitational wave localization volume in terms of their likelihood of being hosts, thereby possibly reducing the number of pointings and total integration time needed to find the electromagnetic counterpart., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

It has been recently recognized that the observational relativistic effects, mainly arising from the light propagation in an inhomogeneous universe, induce the dipole asymmetry in the cross-correlation function of galaxies. In particular, the dipole asymmetry at small scales is shown to be dominated by the gravitational redshift effects. In this paper, we exploit a simple analytical description for the dipole asymmetry in the cross-correlation function valid at quasi-linear regime. In contrast to the previous model, a new prescription involves only one dimensional integrals, providing a faster way to reproduce the results obtained by Saga et al. (2020). Using the analytical model, we discuss the detectability of the dipole signal induced by the gravitational redshift effect from upcoming galaxy surveys. The gravitational redshift effect at small scales enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the dipole, and in most of the cases considered, the S/N is found to reach a maximum at $z\approx0.5$. We show that current and future surveys such as DESI and SKA provide an idealistic data set, giving a large S/N of $10\sim 20$. Two potential systematics arising from off-centered galaxies are also discussed (transverse Doppler effect and diminution of the gravitational redshift effect), and their impacts are found to be mitigated by a partial cancellation between two competitive effects. Thus, the detection of the dipole signal at small scales is directly linked to the gravitational redshift effect, and should provide an alternative route to test gravity., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

The ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation represents a class of single-field models with sharp deceleration of the rolling dynamics on small scales, leading to a significantly enhanced power spectrum of the curvature perturbations and primordial black hole (PBH) formation. Such a sharp transition of the inflationary background can trigger the coherent motion of scalar condensates with effective potentials governed by the rolling rate of the inflaton field. We show that a scalar condensate carrying (a combination of) baryon or lepton number can achieve successful baryogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism from unconventional initial conditions excited by the USR transition. Abstract

Quantum gravitational effects can become important at low energy if the wavefunction of the metric field fails to be peaked around a classical configuration. We try to understand such deviations from classicality within canonical quantum gravity by introducing a "fluid of observers" in the low energy theory and defining a distance operator "at equal time" among them. We find that, even in the presence of relevant fluctuations in the metric field, a locally flat limit is recovered in the neighbourhood of each observer. Deviations from classicality have no particular consequence, locally. However, at larger separations the expectation value of the distance operator behaves differently than a standard Riemannian distance. In particular, it is non-additive and thus cannot be obtained by the integral of a differential line element. This emerging "beyond Riemannian" geometry is a metric space similar to embedded Riemannian manifolds equipped with chord distances that cut through the ambient space. We study deviations from flat space by looking at triangles in the limit where their sizes go to zero. Beyond-Riemannian deviations with respect to flat space are of the same order as standard Riemannian ones, but qualitatively different. We present a simple class of mechanical models where a canonical degree of freedom interacts with another one with a negative kinetic term, i.e. with a ghost. We prove analytically that the classical motion of the system is completely stable for all initial conditions, notwithstanding that the conserved Hamiltonian is unbounded from below and above. This is fully supported by numerical computations. Systems with negative kinetic terms often appear in modern cosmology, quantum gravity and high energy physics and are usually deemed as unstable. Abstract

Binary neutron star mergers offer a new and independent means of measuring the Hubble constant H0 by combining the gravitational-wave inferred source luminosity distance with its redshift obtained from electromagnetic follow-up. This method is limited by the intrinsic degeneracy between the system distance and orbital inclination in the gravitational-wave signal. Observing the afterglow counterpart to a merger can further constrain the inclination angle, allowing this degeneracy to be partially lifted and improving the measurement of H0. In the case of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, afterglow light-curve and imaging modeling thus allowed the H0 measurement to be improved by a factor of three. However, systematic access to afterglow data is far from guaranteed. In fact, though each one allows a leap in H0 precision, these afterglow counterparts should prove rare in forthcoming multimessenger campaigns. We combine models for emission and detection of gravitational-wave and electromagnetic radiation from binary neutron star mergers with realistic population models and estimates for afterglow inclination angle constraints. Using these models, we quantify how fast H0 will be narrowed down by successive multimessenger events with and without the afterglow. We find that because of its rareness and though it greatly refines angle estimates, the afterglow counterpart should not significantly contribute to the measurement of H0 in the long run.

Abstract

A 10\% difference in the scale for the Hubble parameter constitutes a clear problem for cosmology. Here, considering angular distribution of Type Ia supernovae (SN) within the Pantheon compilation and working within flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, we observe a correlation between higher $H_0$ and the CMB dipole direction, confirming our previous results for strongly-lensed quasars \cite{Krishnan:2021dyb}. Concretely, we record a $\sim 1$ km/s/Mpc variation in $H_0$ at antipodal points on the sky within the Pantheon sample, which is evident in the Low $z$ subsample ($z \lesssim 0.075$) and gets enhanced by higher redshift SN. Abstract

We propose a novel scenario of Dark Matter production naturally connected with generation of gravitational waves. Dark Matter is modelled as a real scalar, which interacts with the hot primordial plasma through a portal coupling to another scalar field. For a particular sign of the coupling, this system exhibits an inverse second order phase transition. The latter leads to an abundant Dark Matter production, even if the portal interaction is so weak that the freeze-in mechanism is inefficient. The model predicts domain wall formation in the Universe, long time before the inverse phase transition. These domain walls have a tension decreasing with time, and completely disappear at the inverse phase transition, so that the problem of overclosing the Universe is avoided. The domain wall network emits gravitational waves with characteristics defined by those of Dark Matter. In particular, the peak frequency of gravitational waves is determined by the portal coupling constant, and falls in the observable range for currently planned gravitational wave detectors., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; matches journal version

Abstract

International audience; The Gross–Pitaevskii–Poisson equations that govern the evolution of self-gravitating Bose–Einstein condensates, possibly representing dark matter halos, experience a process of gravitational cooling and violent relaxation. We propose a heuristic parametrization of this complicated process in the spirit of Lynden-Bell’s theory of violent relaxation for collisionless stellar systems. We derive a generalized wave equation that was introduced phenomenologically in Chavanis (Eur Phys J Plus 132:248, 2017) involving a logarithmic nonlinearity associated with an effective temperature $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and a damping term associated with a friction $\xi $. These terms can be obtained from a maximum entropy production principle and are linked by a form of Einstein relation expressing the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The wave equation satisfies an H-theorem for the Lynden-Bell entropy and relaxes towards a stable equilibrium state which is a maximum of entropy at fixed mass and energy. This equilibrium state represents the most probable state of a Bose–Einstein condensate dark matter halo. It generically has a core-halo structure. The quantum core prevents gravitational collapse and may solve the core-cusp problem. The isothermal halo leads to flat rotation curves in agreement with the observations. These results are consistent with the phenomenology of dark matter halos. Furthermore, as shown in a previous paper (Chavanis in Phys Rev D 100:123506, 2019), the maximization of entropy with respect to the core mass at fixed total mass and total energy determines a core mass–halo mass relation which agrees with the relation obtained in direct numerical simulations. We stress the importance of using a microcanonical description instead of a canonical one. Abstract

We present validation tests of emulator-based halo model method for cosmological parameter inference, assuming hypothetical measurements of the projected correlation function of galaxies, $w_{\rm p}(R)$, and the galaxy-galaxy weak lensing, $\Delta\!\Sigma(R)$, from the spectroscopic SDSS galaxies and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Year1 (HSC-Y1) galaxies. To do this, we use \textsc{Dark Emulator} developed in Nishimichi et al. based on an ensemble of $N$-body simulations, which is an emulation package enabling a fast, accurate computation of halo clustering quantities for flat-geometry $w$CDM cosmologies. Adopting the halo occupation distribution, the emulator allows us to obtain model predictions of $\Delta\!\Sigma$ and $w_{\rm p}$ for the SDSS-like galaxies at a few CPU seconds for an input set of parameters. We present performance and validation of the method by carrying out Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses of the mock signals measured from a variety of mock catalogs that mimic the SDSS and HSC-Y1 galaxies. We show that the halo model method can recover the underlying true cosmological parameters to within the 68\% credible interval, except for the mocks including the assembly bias effect (although we consider the unrealistically-large amplitude of assembly bias effect). Even for the assembly bias mock, we demonstrate that the cosmological parameters can be recovered {\it if} the analysis is restricted to scales $R\gtrsim 10~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. We also show that, by using a single population of source galaxies to infer the relative strengths of $\Delta\!\Sigma$ for multiple lens samples at different redshifts, the joint probes method allows for self-calibration of photometric redshift errors and multiplicative shear bias. Thus we conclude that the emulator-based halo model method can be safely applied to the HSC-Y1 dataset, achieving a precision of $\sigma(S_8)\simeq 0.04$., Comment: 39 pages, 22 figures and 5 tables

Abstract

We consider the possibility that the dark sector of our Universe contains a negative cosmological constant dubbed $\lambda$. For such models to be viable, the dark sector should contain an additional component responsible for the late-time accelerated expansion rate ($X$). We explore the departure of the expansion history of these models from the concordance $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter model. For a large class of our models the accelerated expansion is transient with a nontrivial dependence on the model parameters. All models with $w_X>-1$ will eventually contract and we derive an analytical expression for the scale factor $a(t)$ in the neighborhood of its maximal value. We find also the scale factor for models ending in a Big Rip in the regime where dustlike matter density is negligible compared to $\lambda$. We address further the viability of such models, in particular when a high $H_0$ is taken into account. While we find no decisive evidence for a nonzero $\lambda$, the best models are obtained with a phantom behavior on redshifts $z\gtrsim 1$ with a higher evidence for nonzero $\lambda$. Abstract

Primordial black hole production in the mass range $10-10^4 \,{\rm M_\odot}$ is motivated respectively by interpretations of the LIGO/Virgo observations of binary black hole mergers and by their ability to seed intermediate black holes which would account for the presence of supermassive black holes at very high redshift. Their existence would imply a boost in the primordial power spectrum if they were produced by overdensities reentering the horizon and collapsing after single-field inflation. This, together with their associated Poisson fluctuations would cause a boost in the matter power spectrum on small scales. In fact, any evidence of extra power above that of an almost scale-invariant primordial power spectrum on small scales would suggest a non-single-field slow-roll model of inflation, whether or not primordial black holes were produced. The extra power could become potentially observable in the 21cm power spectrum on scales around $k\sim0.1 - 50\,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$ either with the new generation of filled low frequency interferometers. We explicitly include the contribution from primordial fluctuations in our prediction of the 21cm signal which has been previously neglected, by constructing primordial power spectra motivated by single-field models of inflation that would produce extra power on small scales. We find that depending on the mass and abundance of primordial black holes, it is important to include this contribution from the primordial fluctuations, so as not to underestimate the 21cm signal. Evidently our predictions of detectability, which lack any modelling of foregrounds, are unrealistic, but we hope that they will motivate improved cleaning algorithms that can enable us to access this intriguing corner of PBH-motivated parameter space., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

In this article, we study in detail the linear dynamics and cubic interactions for any number $N_\mathrm{field}$ of scalar fields during inflation, directly in terms of the observable curvature perturbation $\zeta$ and $N_\mathrm{field}-1$ entropic fluctuations, a choice that is more suitable for analytical works. In the linear equations of motion for the perturbations, we uncover rich geometrical effects beyond terms involving just the scalar curvature of the field space, and that come from the non-canonical kinetic structure of the scalar fields when the dimension of the field space is larger than two. Moreover, we show that a fast rotation of the local entropic basis can result in negative eigenvalues for the entropic mass matrix, potentially destabilising the background dynamics when $N_\mathrm{field} \geqslant 3$. We also explain how to render manifest the sizes of cubic interactions between the adiabatic and the entropic fluctuations, extending a previous work of ours to any number of interacting fields. As a first analytical application of our generic formalism, we derive the effective single-field theory for perturbations up to cubic order when all entropic fluctuations are heavy enough to be integrated out. In a slow-varying limit, we recover the cubic action expected from the effective field theory of inflation, but with a prediction for the usual Wilson coefficients in terms of the multifield parameters, thus proposing a new interpretation of the bispectrum in this generic $N_\mathrm{field}$ context., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

We launch a first investigation into how a light scalar field coupled both conformally and disformally to matter influences the evolution of spinning point-like bodies. Working directly at the level of the equations of motion, we derive novel spin-orbit and spin-spin effects accurate to leading order in a nonrelativistic and weak-field expansion. Crucially, unlike the spin-independent effects induced by the disformal coupling, which have been shown to vanish in circular binaries due to rotational symmetry, the spin-dependent effects we study here persist even in the limit of zero eccentricity, and so provide a new and qualitatively distinct way of probing these kinds of interactions. To illustrate their potential, we confront our predictions with spin-precession measurements from the Gravity Probe B experiment and find that the resulting constraint improves upon existing bounds from perihelion precession by over 5 orders of magnitude. Abstract

We study the leading-order nonlinear gravitational waves (GWs) produced by an electromagnetic (EM) stress in reheating magnetogenesis scenarios. Both nonhelical and helical magnetic fields are considered. By numerically solving the linear and leading-order nonlinear GW equations, we find that the GW energy from the latter is usually larger. We compare their differences in terms of the GW spectrum and parameterize the GW energy difference due to the nonlinear term, $\Delta\mathcal{E}_{\rm GW}$, in terms of EM energy $\mathcal{E}_{\rm EM}$ as $\Delta\mathcal{E}_{\rm GW}=(\tilde p\mathcal{E}_{\rm EM}/k_*)^3$, where $k_*$ is the characteristic wave number, $\tilde p=0.84$ and $0.88$ are found in the nonhelical and helical cases, respectively, with reheating around the QCD energy scale, while $\tilde p=0.45$ is found at the electroweak energy scale. We also compare the polarization spectrum of the linear and nonlinear cases and find that adding the nonlinear term usually yields a decrease in the polarization that is proportional to the EM energy density. We parameterize the fractional polarization suppression as $|\Delta \mathcal{P}_{\rm GW}/\mathcal{P}_{\rm GW}|=\tilde r \mathcal{E}_{\rm EM}/k_*$ and find $\tilde r = 1.2 \times 10^{-1}$, $7.2 \times 10^{-4}$, and $3.2 \times 10^{-2}$ for the helical cases with reheating temperatures $T_{\rm r} = 300 {\rm TeV}$, $8 {\rm GeV}$, and $120 {\rm MeV}$, respectively.
