Aim: To understand the perceptions of users about the care provided to them and their newborns immediately after childbirth. Method: This is a descriptive study in which a qualitative approach was used, involving 20 postpartum women admitted to a secondary level Public Hospital of Fortaleza. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and were analyzed by means of Bardin’s content analysis technique. Results: Three categories were highlighted: Care provided to newborns; care (or lack of care) provided to postpartum women; and structural failures of the maternity hospital. Discussion: Postpartum care was primarily focused on guidance on breastfeeding, without considering other demands of women, such as: the need for greater attention by the health team; more humane behavior of some health professionals; and guidance on self-care. Conclusion: Postpartum care is still limited and it requires greater attention and commitment from health professionals, as well as adjustments in the structural and organizational conditions of the maternity hospital so that it may provide decent and humane care.

Descriptive study, qualitative, that aimed to capture the content of social representations of puerperal women on health education in pregnancy and postpartum in primary health care. Users were 31 Family Health Centers in Fortaleza, Ceará, over 18 years in the postpartum period, with at least six visits to prenatal and one postpartum consultation. It was held a lexical analysis of data from semi-structured interviews with the software ALCESTE. The representations of puerperal women on health education are linked to institutional educational practices, with emphasis on lectures, family and school education, and community education. It predominate the traditional pedagogy, with the transmission of information, punctual and widespread. It is necessary to change the pedagogical logic, expanding educational groups with knowledge sharing.

Objetivo: Compreender as representacoes sociais de puerperas sobre a educacao em saude no ciclo gravidico-puerperal. Metodo: Estudo descritivo norteado pela Teoria das Representacoes Sociais, desenvolvido em nove Centros de Saude da Familia de Fortaleza, Ceara. Os sujeitos da pesquisa foram usuarias cadastradas em um dos referidos centros, em periodo pos-parto, maiores de 18 anos, com no minimo seis consultas pre-natal e uma consulta puerperal. Utilizou-se o Teste de Associacao Livre de Palavras. Resultados: As primiparas associam acoes educativas com educacao familiar. Quanto as multiparas, tem em suas evocacoes representacoes das acoes de saude prestadas pelo medico, cursos e palestras. Discussao: As multiparas passam por um processo de ressignificacao da sua experiencia apos as consultas. Impoe-se o saber cientifico e desvaloriza-se o saber popular. Conclusao: E preciso ressignificar as acoes educativas para que sejam entendidas como veiculo de construcao de saberes, rompendo a tradicional concepcao de transmissao e reproducao.
