Incorporation of boron into foraminiferal shells is thought to be primarily governed by the carbonate chemistry of the ambient seawater, suggesting that it can be reconstructed from B/Ca ratios. To this end, B/Ca ratios of the benthic foraminifer Planulina wuellerstorfi from South Atlantic core top samples have been analyzed using laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) to provide additional information on intratest trace element heterogeneity. Results show that boron is heterogeneously distributed within and between shells, with content variations of approximately ±43% displayed within a single shell. B/Ca is higher in the youngest chambers, opposite to the observed between-chamber variability of Mg/Ca. This may be explained by ontogenetic changes of physiological processes that increase the pH of the calcifying fluid and thus the borate concentration while decreasing Mg/Ca to promote calcification. Despite this heterogeneity, mean B/Ca ratios are positively correlated with the deepwater calcite saturation state (Δ[CO32–]), in line with previous studies. We apply this empirical relationship to reconstruct Δ[CO32–] for the late Pleistocene to Holocene using samples from a depth transect in the equatorial Atlantic. Reconstructed Δ[CO32–] values confirm previous studies suggesting that CaCO3-oversaturated North Atlantic Deep Water was reduced during glacial periods, whereas CaCO3-undersaturated Antarctic Bottom Water expanded vertically and propagated northwards. In summary, our data demonstrate that bulk B/Ca in P. wuellerstorfi reliably reflects variations in Δ[CO32–], despite the strong physiological control of boron incorporation.

The resolution and fidelity of global chronostratigraphic correlation are direct functions of the time period under consideration. By virtue of deep-ocean cores and astrochronology, the Cenozoic and Mesozoic time scales carry error bars of a few thousand years (k.y.) to a few hundred k. y. In contrast, most of the Paleozoic time scale carries error bars of plus or minus a few million years (m. y.), and chronostratigraphic control better than +/- 1 m. y. is considered "high resolution." The general lack of Paleozoic abyssal sediments and paucity of orbitally tuned Paleozoic data series combined with the relative incompleteness of the Paleozoic stratigraphic record have proven historically to be such an obstacle to intercontinental chronostratigraphic correlation that resolving the Paleozoic time scale to the level achieved during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic was viewed as impractical, impossible, or both. Here, we utilize integrated graptolite, conodont, and carbonate carbon isotope (delta C-13 carb) data from three paleocontinents (Baltica, Avalonia, and Laurentia) to demonstrate chronostratigraphic control for upper Llandovery through middle Wenlock (TelychianSheinwoodian, similar to 436-426 Ma) strata with a resolution of a few hundred k.y. The interval surrounding the base of the Wenlock Series can now be correlated globally with precision approaching 100 k.y., but some intervals (e. g., uppermost Telychian and upper Shein-woodian) are either yet to be studied in sufficient detail or do not show sufficient biologic speciation and/or extinction or carbon isotopic features to delineate such small time slices. Although producing such resolution during the Paleozoic presents an array of challenges unique to the era, we have begun to demonstrate that erecting a Paleozoic time scale comparable to that of younger eras is achievable. A 2 m.y. oxygen isotope record of Globigerinoides sacculifer from the Ontong Java Plateau, based on cores from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 130, is dated by matching variations to an orbital template. The procedure allows us to present the most complete Quaternary record available for the western equatorial Pacific. The template-generating algorithm describes a balance between growth and melting of ice. Following basic Milankovitch theory, ice growth is taken as constant, while melting is taken to depend on summer insolation, current ice mass, and average past ice mass. Template settings must be changed once, between 1 and 1.2 Ma, to reflect a major shift in climate. Template fits are strikingly good over much of the record and can be used to detect and fill gaps from core breaks and other disturbances. One result of template dating is an exact age for the Brunhes-Matuyama magnetic reversal boundary, at 790 ±5 ka, as well as several other precise dates (900 ka for the middle Pleistocene climate shift; 1070, 1240, and 1450 ka for isotope stages 31, 37, and 47, respectively). Sedi- mentation rates fluctuate between 18 and 28 m/m.y., a ca. 400 ka cycle being the most prominent. Major anomalies arise within the transitional regime (1.2 to 1 Ma). The origin of the cycles is unknown; we propose productivity variations in the western equatorial Pacific.
