Riverine measurements of sediment and solute transport give empirical basin-scale estimates of bed-load, suspended-sediment, and silicate-solute fluxes for 100,000 km2 of northwestern California and western Oregon. This spatially explicit sediment budget shows the multifaceted control of geology and physiography on the rates and processes of fluvial denudation. Bed-load transport is greatest for steep basins, particularly in areas underlain by the accreted Klamath terrane. Bed-load flux commonly decreases downstream as clasts convert to suspended load by breakage and attrition, particularly for softer rock types. Suspended load correlates strongly with lithology, basin slope, precipitation, and wildfire disturbance. It is highest in steep regions of soft rocks, and our estimates suggest that much of the suspended load is derived from bed-load comminution. Dissolution, measured by basin-scale silicate-solute yield, constitutes a third of regional landscape denudation. Solute yield correlates with precipitation and is proportionally greatest in low-gradient and wet basins and for high parts of the Cascade Range, where undissected Quaternary volcanic rocks soak in 2-3 m of annual precipitation. Combined, these estimates provide basin-scale erosion rates ranging from ~50 t · km-2 · yr-1 (approximately equivalent to 0.02 mm · yr-1) for low-gradient basins such as the Willamette River to ~500 t · km-2 · yr-1 (~0.2 mm · yr-1) for steep coastal drainages. The denudation rates determined here from modern measurements are less than those estimated by longer-term geologic assessments, suggesting episodic disturbances such as fire, flood, seismic shaking, and climate change significantly add to long-term landscape denudation. Several decades of studies on shelf-margin evolution have led to recognition that both accommodation-dominated and supply-dominated sediment-delivery systems are capable of transporting sediments from the shelf down into deep-water basins. The former case relies on falling sea level and lowstands to move deltas to the shelf edge, whereas the latter depends on well-supplied deltas reaching the shelf edge regardless of sea-level rise. However, it remains unclear how to distinguish between the two sediment-dispersal alternatives, and which of these is more efficient in delivering sediments to deep water. We explore sediment-volume partitioning into deep-water areas by analyzing >1600 runs of a geometric delta model with varying eustatic, shelf-morphologic, and sediment-supply conditions. Previous studies suggest that greenhouse eustatic (low amplitude and frequency) conditions generate lower shelf accommodation, and permit the shoreline to arrive at the shelf edge quickly. Further investigation reveals that (1) this argument works only for the supply-dominated system, and (2) the proportion of total sediment that reaches deep water is not correlated to the frequency of sea-level change, but depends strongly on the shelf width and the amplitude of sea-level change. We suggest a ratio between (1) the product of shelf width and the amplitude of sea-level change and (2) total sediment supply to quantitatively characterize the sediment dispersal system. A ratio of 0.4 forms a good boundary between accommodation- and supply-dominated systems in the modeling results, and in three well-studied ancient systems (the Maastrichtian Washakie Basin, Wyoming, USA; the Pliocene paleo--Orinoco margin, Trinidad and Tobago; and the Miocene New Jersey margin, northeastern USA). The extent to which Aboriginal Australians used fire to modify their environment has been debated for decades and is generally based on charcoal and pollen records rather than landscape responses to land-use change. Here we investigate the sensitivity of in-situ-produced 10Be, an isotope commonly used in geomorphological contexts, to anthropogenic perturbations in the southeastern Australian Tablelands. Comparing 10Be-derived erosion rates from fluvial sediment (8.7 ± 0.9 mm k.y.-1; 1 standard error, SE; n = 11) and rock outcrops (5.3 ± 1.4 mm k.y.-1; 1 SE; n = 6) confirms that landscape lowering rates integrating over 104-105 yr are consistent with rates previously derived from studies integrating over 104 to >107 yr. We then model an expected 10Be inventory in fluvial sediment if background erosion rates were perturbed by a low-intensity, high-frequency Aboriginal burning regime. When we run the model using the average erosion rate derived from 10Be in fluvial sediment (8.7 mm k.y.-1), measured and modeled 10Be concentrations overlap between ca. 3 ka and 1 ka. Arroyos in the American Southwest proceed through cut-and-fill cycles that operate at centennial to millennial time scales. The geomorphic community has put much effort into understanding the causes of arroyo cutting in the late Quaternary and in the modern record (late 1800s), while little effort has gone into understanding how arroyos fill and the sources of this fill. Here, we successfully develop a geographic information system (GIS)-modeled sediment budget that is based on detailed field measurements of hillslope and channel erosion and deposition. Field measurements were made in two arroyo basins draining different lithologies and undergoing different land disturbance (Volcano Hill Wash, 9.30 km2; Arroyo Chavez, 2.11 km²) over a 3 yr period. Both basins have incised channels that formed in response to the late nineteenth-century incision of the Rio Puerco. Large volumes of sediment were generated during arroyo incision, equal to more than 100 yr of the current annual total sediment load (bed load + suspended load) in each basin. Downstream reaches in both arroyos are presently aggrading, and the main source of the sediment is from channel erosion in upstream reaches and first- and second-order tributaries. The sediment budget shows that channel erosion is the largest source of sediment in the current stage of the arroyo cycle: 98% and 80% of the sediment exported out of Volcano Hill Wash and Arroyo Chavez, respectively. The geomorphic surface most affected by arroyo incision and one of the most important sediment sources is the valley alluvium, where channel erosion, gullying, soil piping, and grazing all occur. Erosion rates calculated for the entire Volcano Hill Wash (-0.26 mm/yr) and Arroyo Chavez (-0.53 mm/yr) basins are higher than the modeled upland erosion rates in each basin, reflecting the large contributions from channel erosion. Erosion rates in each basin are affected by a combination of land disturbance (grazing) and lithology-erodible sandstones and shales in Arroyo Chavez compared with basalt for Volcano Hill Wash. Despite these differences, hillslope sediment yields are similar to long-term denudation rates. Aeolian dune development is influenced by feedback between surface properties and sediment transport, yet little is known about the larger scale temporal and spatial natures of this relationship. Surface moisture is particularly influential, and is generally recognized in aeolian environments for its ability to increase the critical shear velocity required to entrain sediment in beach settings or, alternatively, to sustain vegetation and stabilize surfaces at a dune-field scale. However, conceptual models and field work have alluded to its importance in protodune initiation, while field observations infer that seasonal moisture input may contribute to residual dune ridge formation at the dune-field scale. This has the potential to reveal geomorphic adaptation to variations in climate, and identify a recognizable signature in the rock record. This article presents a simulation model that produces geomorphological features similar to field observations and is capable of examining the implications of surface and transport feedback at both scales. Results (1) reveal the control of surface moisture at different temporal scales, (2) display complexity in the development of multiple spatial scales within a cellular automaton framework, (3) highlight the importance of transient sand strips and sediment supply frequency in aeolian transport dynamics and protodune development, and (4) explore the relationship and significance of feedback duration, development time, and bedform spatial scale in the development of incipient dunes. The planform geometry of submarine channels commonly exhibits a spatio-temporal stability generally not observed in fluvial channels. As such, submarine channels tend to lack the meander loop cutoffs and frequent avulsion history typical of fluvial channels. Fluvial sinuosity develops through inner-bend deposition and outer-bend erosion. Inner-bend deposits have also been recognized in submarine channels, from subsurface and seafl oor images and from ancient channel outcrops, and have been demonstrated within physical models. However, outer-bend sediment accumulations are a feature thought to be unique to submarine channels. We report on physical experiments on channelized, subaqueous, particle-driven turbidity currents that demonstrate that channel-fill architecture relates directly to the degree of flow bypass, in turn largely determined by the degree of confinement. In general, weakly bypassing fl ows deposit at the outer bend, whereas strongly bypassing flows deposit at the inner bend. Therefore flows within aggradational channel systems whose axes are bypass dominated may preferentially deposit at the inner bend, ultimately having the effect of increasing channel sinuosity through time; this is an evolution pattern commonly observed in seismic images. Once developed, the apparent spatio-temporal longevity of sinuosity within many systems may be explained by the passage of turbidity currents of varying magnitude (and consequently bypass potential) depositing preferentially at either the inner or outer bank of the channel, maintaining a quasi-stable morphological equilibrium. Fluvial channels do not have the ability to reduce or maintain their sinuosity in this way, which plausibly explains why they tend to develop cutoffs at higher rates than subaqueous channels. Alluvial fan evolution and morphology are often considered to respond primarily to external forcing (e.g., tectonics, climate, and base-level change). Here we present a numerical model of alluvial fan evolution that shows that dramatic and persistent fan entrenchment may occur in the absence of such forcing. This process is driven by positive autogenic feed-backs between flow width, sediment transport, and rate of fan aggradation. Entrenchment is initiated where sediment accommodation space limits continued fan growth. Our results highlight a need to rethink both the representation of fluvial width adjustment in landscape evolution models and the established framework for the interpretation of fluvial landforms as archives of environmental change. The activity of fallout radionuclides (7Be, 137Cs, and 210Pb) was measured on upland and floodplain soils and on suspended sediments to quantify sources of fine sediment and to estimate sediment transport distances in stream channels in the Yellowstone River basin. Samples were collected seven times during snowmelt and runoff at nine locations from the headwaters of Soda Butte Creek to Billings, Montana, a 423-km-long reach of channel. The inventory of radionuclides in soil increases with precipitation and is highest in the headwaters. The activity of radionuclides in suspended sediment decreases downstream, and more activity is observed earlier than later in the flood hydrograph. The radionuclide activity of sediment derived from erosion of upland soils differs from that derived from bank erosion. Fine suspended sediment has an intermediate radionuclide signature that is quantified in terms of the relative contribution of these two sources of fine sediment. At sites high in the drainage, soils contribute 50% to the suspended load and this value decreases to 11%–26% downstream. Fine sediment transport distances were calculated from the exponential decrease in radionuclide concentration below a point source. Transport distances increase from a few kilometers in the headwaters to hundreds of kilometers downstream. These estimates are consistent with transport distances estimated from the settling velocity of the particles and from the distribution of mine tailings downstream from a dam failure.
