The studied rock collapse structure is located on the Liburnian coast (Rijeka Bay, channel zone of the NE Adriatic). The relief of the southern part of this coast, with a length of 6.5 km, is a large escarpment with very steep to vertical slopes reaching heights of 100 m above sea level, as a result of tectonic movements along the Kvarner fault zone. These events probably led to a sudden relaxation of the highly fractured rock mass. The progressive expansion occurred at locations where previously favourably oriented faults and fissures had formed a polygonal rock collapse resembling a rock-slide which is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to reconstruct and explain the complex morphological evolution of the studied landslide, from the pre-failure deformations, through the failure itself, to post-failure displacements, as well as possible future instabilities. Recent techniques to survey the instability, location and to analyse the evolution of the rupture surface and its dimensions were combined (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Side Scan Sonar and Remotely Operated Vehicles). The estimated total volume of displaced rock mass is 950,000 mi The lower part of the instability phenomenon was submerged during the Holocene sea level rise. Since then, a large part of the displaced rock mass has been in a stable position, with sporadic rock falls. However, given unfavourable orientation and discontinuity characteristics, as well as unfavourable environmental influences, possible instabilities might also be expected in the future. Krk Island located in the Dinaric karst is characterized by somewhat contradictory, yet undefined depressions of linear geometry. A comprehensive spatial analysis considering over 900 linear features served as a testing ground for revealing the specific circumstances required for the occurrence of the linear morphology on the surface of rather pure karst typically characterized by dolines. Morphological characteristics, spatial distribution and field evidence imply that linear features of different appearance are the outcome of several different mechanisms including speleogenesis and denudation, slope processes and erosion by the torrential surface runoff. Surface runoff occurred due to specific regional geological, morphological and climate conditions in the area. Recently, such linear features exhibit a dry valley- or dry gorge-like appearance. This example from the Dinarides provides insight into the possible circumstances that may cause a temporal surface runoff even in rather pure karst conditions. This knowledge is valuable for understanding other karst areas expressing temporal surface runoff or imprints of its past occurrences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the origins of two tombolos (one recent and another fossil/submerged) on the southwestern coast of Prvić Island, which is located in the Kvarner area in the northeastern part of the Adriatic Sea. A recent tombolo on Cape Pipa was formed by the erosion of Quaternary deposits and Palaeogene siliciclastic rocks. The submerged tombolo is much bigger, clearly visible on the sea bed toward the southwest. The conditions for forming a submerged and recent tombolo have occurred during a slow rise and then stagnation of sea level of the Adriatic Sea in the Holocene. The sea flooded the fossil tombolo probably in the final part of a period of rapid sea-level rise at the beginning of the Holocene when a large proportion of the Quaternary sediments were eroded. Waves from the northwest (tramuntana) and southeast (jugo) refract and diffract around the tombolo. The nourishment of the beach body happens permanently on both sides of the cape. Accumulated sediments are protected by resistant rocky blocks of breccia on the peak of Cape Pipa, acting as a natural tombolo. Due to the fact that wave directions are perpendicular to the beach coastline, they do not generate longshore currents that would erode sediment in beach bodies around Cape Pipa. The Grohovo landslide is the largest active slope movement along the Croatian coast, situated on the north-eastern slope in the central part of the Rječina River Valley (north-eastern coastal part of Adriatic Sea, Croatia). Slopes in this valley are formed of siliciclastic rocks (i.e., flysch), while the limestone rock mass is visible on the cliffs around the top of the river valley. The slopes are at the limit of a stable equilibrium state, and slope movement phenomena have been recorded since the 19th century. Samples for laboratory testing were taken from the flysch bedrock, weathered zone and slope deposits to provide specimens for determination of their mineralogical, physical and geotechnical properties. Correlation between mine- ralogical and geotechnical properties and their influence on sliding processes are presented here. The clay fraction in samples ranges from 17 % to 38 %. Clay activity of the tested samples is from 0.45 to 0.89, and the residual friction angle varies from 13.0° to 17.7°. These results correspond to the presence of kaolinite and illite groups of clay mineral. Both the mineral composition and decrease in strength of fine-grained soil materials, due to the increase of pore water pressures, contributes to slope movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results of landslide monitoring undertaken between 1998-2010 on the north-eastern slope of the central part of Rječina Valley in front of Grohovo village (north-eastern coastal part of Adriatic Sea, Croatia) are presented. This is the largest regional active landslide. The slopes around the Rječ*ina riverbed are formed in siliciclastic sedimentary rocks with flysch characteristics. The bedrock is mostly covered with unstable slope formations. A limestone rock mass is visible on the cliffs around the top of the river valley. The landslide is complex and retrogressive, with 13 sliding bodies. It occurred in December 1996 by displacement of an initial landslide body where movement had been registered in the 19th century. The limestone mega-blocks and separated rocky towers on the top of the slope have also moved, which is an atypical phenomenon of the flysch slopes in the area of Rijeka. After initial sliding ceased, and major movements subsided, monitoring of benchmark movements from 1998 until 2010 determined further maximum displacements on the upper part of the slope, and minimum movement in the lower part. The area of the Rječina Valley from the Valići Dam to the Pašac Bridge was selected as a pilot area in the framework of the Croatian-Japanese bilateral joint research project. Monitoring results provided the basis of establishing an early warning system for possible landslide occurrence and estimating the degree of landslide risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
