Introduction: This cross-sectional study intends to analyze the physical growth of children thalassemia patients and evaluate the factors linked to their physical features. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study tracked 44 pediatric thalassemia patients at a Central Vietnam Tertiary Pediatric Center from February to December 2023. Results: The study participants had a mean age of 7.5 ± 4.3 years and an equal gender distribution. 64.5% of these individuals had thalassemia and required blood transfusions. 43.2% of subjects had serum ferritin levels above 1000 ng/ml, and the average hemoglobin content was 67.4 ± 16.1 g/L 31.8% of the children assessed had height-for-age measurements below -2 standard deviations, while 43.2% had weight-for-age measurements below -2 standard deviations. Significant correlations were found between height-for-age, weight-for-age, blood transfusion reliance, and serum ferritin levels (p < 0.05). No significant changes were seen between physical indices and disease type or hemoglobin concentration (p > 0.05). 31.8% of juvenile thalassemia patients were found to have stunting, whereas 43.2% exhibited wasting malnutrition in this study. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the physical growth features of preterms infants at early childhood and to evaluate the perinatal and postnatal risk factors that affect growth. Method: Somatic growth features including weight, height, and target height, of moderate-late and early preterm infants followed-up in our unit were evaluated at a mean age of 42 months. The effects of intrauterine growth characteristics (IUGC) on current growth as well as the effects of perinatal and early neonatal problems were investigated. Results: A total of 232 moderate-late preterm infants (Group I) (mean gestational age [GA]: 34.9±1.2 weeks) and 112 early preterms (Group II) (mean GA: 29.9±1.6 weeks) were evaluated. The ratio of retardation in height was 2.6 % and 6.3% in Group I and Group II, respectively. The rate of failure in achieving the target height was higher in Group II (3.9% vs 8%). Growth differences in terms of height and weight were not significantly different between the two groups (p>0.05). Severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), hydrocephalus and invasive mechanical ventilation requirements negatively affected the growth in height and reaching the target height (p<0.05). Conclusion: The moderate-late and early preterm infants had similar growth features in terms of weight, height, and target height when evaluated at 42 months of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of colectomy in children with ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods: The effects of colectomy on clinical and laboratory findings and the complications of the colectomy were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Colectomy was performed in 18 children; the mean age was 8,02±5,66 years old; 66,6% of the patients were the boys. In 16 children, the indication was a poor response to medical therapy; dysplasia in one patient and toxic megacolon and bleeding in another patient. Cyclosporine and/or infliximab were used in 13 patients as step-up or rescue therapies before colectomy. Ileoanal anastomosis was performed in 13 patients, ileal pouch and ileoanal anastomosis were performed in 2 patients, Hartmann pouch and subtotal colectomy with ileostomy were performed in 2 patients, and subtotal colectomy was performed in one patient. Although there was no statistical difference; Z-scores for the weight, the height, and the body mass index improved within one year, after colectomy. Hemoglobin level increased, and leukocytes, C-reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate serum levels decreased within one year, after colectomy. The immunosuppressive drugs were discontinued after the colectomy in all, except two patients. The most common complications were fecal incontinence and frequent defecation. Conclusion: The most common indication for colectomy was a poor response to medical therapy. Colectomy improved clinical and laboratory findings by alleviating inflammation and restored growth and development of the children. It has reduced the use of immunosuppressive drugs which have significant side effects. The complications that have seen after surgery were tolerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Breastfeeding ensures ideal physical, intellectual and behavioral development of infants, and also protects them against infections and chronic diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of feeding patterns on physical growth and mental development of infants in the first 6 months of life. Methods: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed medical files of infants aged between 0 and 6 months who were referred to a provincial family health center. According to their feeding patterns, they were divided into 3 groups as only breastfed group (group AS, n=63), only formula-fed group (group FM, n=30), and the group of infants fed with both breast milk, and baby formulas (group AF, n=63). Weight, height and head circumferences of the infants were measured at birth, and at postnatal months 1., 2., 3., 4., and 6. and were evaluated for each group. Results: Normal birth rate was higher in the breastfed group (41.3%) when compared with the formula-fed babies (31.6%). During 6 weeks of the follow-up period, statistically significant increases were detected in body weights of the infants fed only with breast milk at months 1., 2. and 3., in body heights at month 2, and in head circumferences at months 1., 2. and 3. (p<0.05). The increase in body height in the infants fed both with breast milk and baby formulas was higher at months 4, and 6 than those in the other groups. Conclusion: Breast-fed babies grow faster than formula-fed babies within the first months of life, but later on, their growth rates slow down. Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine of feeding problems and the effect of feeding problems on growth in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Materials and Methods: The study was included 278 children who have cerebral palsy. Socio-demographic data and clinical characteristics and feeding problems of the children were recorded. Gross motor function levels and anthropometric measurements (body weight, height, knee length, upper arm length, mid upper arm area, arm and thigh circumferences, arm and forearm length, tibia length, triceps and subscapular skin-fold thickness) were taken. Results: Average age of the children was 8.50±4.49 years. 130 (46.8%) of the children have had feeding problems and 148 (53.2%) have had no feeding problems. Feeding problems were more in children with moderate and severe disability then mild disability (p<0.05). Most common feeding problems were difficulty in swallowing, vomiting, aspiration, difficulty in chewing, slaver and difficulty in holding of food in mouth. There was a significant different between weight, height, body weight, height, knee length, upper arm length, mid upper arm area, arm and thigh circumferences, upper extremities length (arm and forearm length), tibia length, triceps and subscapular skin-fold thickness in children who have feeding problems and have not feeding problem (p<0.05). Conclusions: Periodic anthropometric measurements is most important factors in early determine of feeding problems and feeding deficiency in children with CP and should be considered in the process of rehabilitation. Objective: Circumcision is one of the most widely used surgical procedures worldwide. It has been suggested that circumcision reduces the frequency of urinary tract infection (UTI) 10-20 times. However no studies exist investigating the effect of circumcision on UTI frequency and growth in infants with antenatal hydronephrosis (AH). In this study therefore, we aimed to examine the effect of circumcision on postnatal UTI frequency and growth in infants without urological abnormality despite the diagnosis of antenatal hydronephrosis. Material and Methods: Data were evaluated retrospectively between 1998-2010. Infants with a fetal pelvis diameter of ≥5 mm identified with antenatal ultrasound (US) were followed-up. All patients were evaluated in terms of UTI frequency and body weights, and heights of the infants were collected. The chi-square and Student’s t tests were used for statistical analysis. P value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: In circumcised normal male infants pre-circumcision mean UTI frequency (2.27±1.75 per year) was found to be higher than the post-circumcision mean UTI frequency (0.12±0.22 per year) (p<0.05). Post-circumcision heights (mean height SDS=0.19±1.2) were significantly greater than pre-circumcision heights (mean height SDS=-0.03±0.55) in circumcised males (p=0.02). Pre- (0.23±1.2) and post-circumcision (0.43±0.85) mean (± SDS) body weight measurements were not statistically different (p>0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, in male infants without detected urological abnormalities antenatally diagnosed as AH, early circumcision decreases the frequency of UTI and provides a positive contribution to the growth.
