Abstract

The dynamic model of manufacturing focuses on learning and competence building in the quest for perfection. The model has been suggested to be the essence of Japanese manufacturing success. In contrast, scholars argue that U.S.A. manufacturing bases strategic decisions on static short-term cost minimizing paradigms. This article provides an empirical test of these propositions by comparing attitudes toward top management involvement in manufacturing decisions and quality attitudes in the U.S.A. and Japan.
