The use of nanocarriers in medicine, so-called nanomedicine, is one of the most innovative strategies for targeting drugs at the action site and increasing their activity index and effectiveness. Phytomedicine is the oldest traditional method used to treat human diseases and solve health problems. The recent literature on the treatment of malaria infections using nanodelivery systems and phytodrugs or supplements has been analyzed. For the first time, in the present review, a careful look at the considerable potential of nanomedicine in promoting phytotherapeutic efficacy was done, and its key role in addressing a translation through a significant reduction of the current burden of malaria in many parts of the world has been underlined.

Aim: Collagen-enriched transfersomes, glycerosomes and glytransfersomes were specifically tailored for skin delivery of oleuropein. Methods: Vesicles were prepared by direct sonication and their main physicochemical and technological properties were measured. Biocompatibility, protective effect and promotion of the healing of a wounded cell monolayer were tested in vitro using fibroblasts. Results: Vesicles were mainly multicompartment, small (∼108 nm), slightly polydispersed (approximately 0.27) and negatively charged (~-49 mV). Oleuropein was incorporated in high amounts (approximately 87%) and vesicles were stable during four months of storage. In vitro studies confirmed the low toxicity of formulations (viability ≥95%), their effectiveness in counteracting nitric oxide generation and damages caused by free oxygen radicals, especially when collagen glytransfersomes were used (viability ~100%). These vesicles also promoted the regeneration of a wounded area by promoting the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts. Conclusion: Collagen-enriched vesicles are promising formulations capable of speeding up the healing of the wounded skin.

The purpose of this report is to summarize and critically analyze emerging trends in phospholipid vesicles for the oral delivery of natural compounds. Liposomes have long been used as delivery systems, thanks to their ability to incorporate diverse bioactives, their biocompatibility and safety. However, the efficacy of oral liposomes is hampered by their low stability under the harsh conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Different approaches have been utilized with the aim of improving the stability of liposomes and the payload after oral administration. This report provides an overview on the phospholipid vesicles used for oral delivery of natural compounds, exploring the current strategies to improve their performance by modifying the lipid bilayer composition and assembly or the physical state.

Aim: The moisturizing properties of glycerol, the penetration enhancing capability of propylene glycol and the bioadhesive properties of mucin were combined to improve the carrier capabilities of transfersomes and the efficacy of mangiferin in the treatment of skin lesions. Materials & methods: Mangiferin was incorporated in transfersomes and glycoltransfersomes, which were also modified with mucin. The physico-chemical features were assessed, along with the efficacy against oxidative stress and skin wounds in vitro and in vivo . Results: Glycoltransfersomes promoted the deposition of mangiferin in epidermis and dermis, protected fibroblasts from oxidative stress and stimulated their proliferation. The wound healing and anti-inflammatory efficacy of glycoltransfersomes were confirmed in vivo . Conclusion: Results confirmed the potential of glycoltransfersomes in preventing/treating of skin lesions.

Aim: Therapeutic efficacy of pulmonary diseases is often limited and drug delivery systems offer new solutions to clinical problems. Solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) are suggested as systems for the delivery of therapeutics to the lung as, because of their size, they are able to deposit into secondary bronchi., Materials & Methods: Here, we describe two novel different SLMs using chitosan and alginate such as mucoadhesive polymers and we also studied their biocompatibility and their effectiveness compared with the free drug in controlling senescence and inflammatory processes in cigarette smoke extracts., Results: Data reported show that fluticasone propionate (FP)-loaded SLMs are more effective than FP alone in controlling oxidative stress., Conclusion: The therapeutic approach using FP-loaded microparticles could be a promising strategy for the treatment of the chronic inflammatory pulmonary diseases.
