The paper assesses the differences between optimistic and not optimistic subjects, at negative (Depression, Anxiety) and positive (Satisfaction with Life, Happiness and Self-Esteem) variables. The research was conducted in a group of 309 university students between 18 and 25 years. The ANOVA test (Scheffé test) showed significant differences for the negative variables. For the positive variables were found significant differences in life satisfaction and happiness. Optimism is highlighted in relation to the others variables. In contrast, the variable self-esteem does not appear as a relevant variable. It concludes with the importance of the use of optimism and other positive variables, studied in recent years, as a tool in psychotherapy and clinical interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Questionnaires were developed to investigate the effects that paranormal and paranormal/spiritual experiences have on peoples' lives. Data from a convenience sample of 67 people actively interested in parapsychology who reported having had at least one paranormal and/or transcendent experience showed that these experiences increased their interest and beliefs in spiritual matters and increased their sense of well-being. More specifically, the majority of respondents indicated that the experiences resulted in increased belief in life after death, belief that their lives are guided or watched over by a higher force or being, interest in spiritual or religious matters, sense of connection to others, happiness, well-being, confidence, optimism about the future, and meaning in life. They also indicated decreases in fear of death, depression or anxiety, isolation and loneliness, and worry and fears about the future. A large majority of respondents indicated that these effects resulted from a combination of more than one paranormal and/or transcendent experience. The magnitude of changes in well-being and spirituality were positively associated with the number of anomalous experiences. Measures of current well-being and current importance of spirituality were positively associated with reported changes in well-being and spirituality resulting from anomalous experiences. Although 45% of the respondents indicated that a paranormal experience had made them very afraid, this fear appeared to be temporary or mixed with positive feeling because only 9% indicated that their experiences have been scary with no positive value. Further research should investigate the extent to which the findings from this selected sample apply to other populations and the extent to which motivations relating to spirituality direct or underlie the occurrence of paranormal phenomena, including in experimental settings. Con el objetivo de evaluar si las intervenciones en gratitud y optimismo ayudan a mejorar las relaciones sociales en niños, se diseñó un estudio experimental con un total de 50 niños de 9 años en una escuela privada de la Capital Federal argentina. El grupo experimental fue expuesto a intervenciones basadas en gratitud y optimismo, mientras que el grupo control fue expuesto a una intervención neutra In order to evaluate if the interventions in gratitude and optimism help to improve social relationships in children, an experimental study was designed over a total of fifty 9 year-old children, in a private school of Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina. The experimental group was exposed to interventions based on gratitude and optimism, while the control group was exposed to a neutral intervention. Sociometric, measures were used to evaluate the whole experience. After the interventions were performed, negative social relationships within the experimental group significantly decreased (by 44.69%), while no changes were observed in the control group. This experience, study proves the positive impact of this type of interventions over the social relationships of children in a school environment Fil: Czar, Andrea. The studies that relate various tests that assess positive and negative variables are scarce. This study evaluates differences between optimistic and non optimistic persons, in the negative variables (Depression, Anxiety) and positive variables (Satisfaction with Life, Happiness and Self Esteem). It also relates the perception of having had positive and negative experiences with the test results. The research was conducted with Argentine university students. ANOVA and Scheffé showed significant differences for negative variables. For positive variables were significant differences for Satisfaction with Life, Happiness and Self esteem. It also found a significant relationship between the perception of having had negative and positive experiences with test scores. These results are compared with samples obtained in other Latin American countries. We conclude that it is necessary to explore the use of optimism and other positive variables, studied in recent years, as a tool in psychotherapy, clinical interventions and preventive health.
