Aim: to analyze the practical knowledge of nurses on the clinical management of neonatal pain. Methods: a descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study held with 20 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses of two public maternity hospitals in the city of Niterói. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed by targeting the construction of thematic categories. Results: the categories found were associated with the perception of nurses regarding neonatal pain and their knowledge and actions regarding the clinical management of this neonatal symptom. It was found that nurses lack knowledge of the clinical management of pain, which is not a part of the daily neonatal care routine. They were also unaware of the application of rating scales for pain assessment. Conclusion: possessing scientific knowledge is crucial, as it provides required methods for neonatal care, focusing on the improvement of the quality of the health care provided and in the humanization of nursing care, considering pain as the fifth vital sign. Aim: to analyze the knowledge of nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on the entry, handling, maintenance and withdrawal of the peripherally inserted central catheter. Method: This is a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative study involving nine nurses from the Neonatal intensive care unit of the Antonio Pedro University Hospital, Fluminense Federal University, interviewed based on a semi-structured script. The data submitted to content analysis have originated thematic categories. Results: knowledge of nurses regarding the statement, insertion, maintenance and removal of the catheter, standards and protocols and professional training for the care process are decisive for the safety of care to the newborn. Conclusion: The use of the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is important in neonatology for its benefits to the infant. However, nurses need to deepen their knowledge so that the care process in the NICU is guided by ethics and based on nursing protocols aiming to base and legitimize such assistance. Aim: To analyze the axiological dimensions of nurses regarding breastfeeding and their reflections along with the nursing mothers, in the process of knowledge transmission. Method: A descriptive and qualitative study of 11 nurses from the Friendly Breastfeeding Primary Care Initiative of Rio de Janeiro. The data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews between January/March 2010, generating categories articulated with Max Scheler's Theory of Values. Result: The following categories emerged: the affective bond as a value for successful breastfeeding; and breastfeeding and nutritional value and protection for the child. Discussion: To analyze the evaluative link of the act of breastfeeding between mother and child and the link related to the value of food safety also means thinking about the love and affection that, in the conception of Scheler, are absolutely unique. Conclusion: the valuation of women as individuals is seen through a totally new perspective concerning breastfeeding, as recommended by public policies regarding women's care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The care of the health of women is a huge challenge for users, health professionals and the Health System (SUS, in Portuguese). The production of scientific knowledge in nursing, focusing on the area of women's health, contributes to the provision of care grounded in scientific evidence. In this way, clinical practice can place an emphasis on actions that guide the context of women's health services, in terms of the technical actions of health professionals in the field of good practice. However, an attentive and careful observation allows us to realize that this improved degree of care requires constant improvement in the technical and scientific capabilities of nursing staff in order to cope with new technologies. The correct use of such technologies will contribute to the quality of care to which women are entitled. It is therefore the duty of nursing professionals to attend to such needs by taking advantage of the knowledge acquired during their training, and also in their everyday professional lives. Aim: to identify the activities that promote mental health carried out by women deprived of their liberty, given the difficulties encountered during the period of imprisonment. Method: descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study with forty women deprived of liberty in a female prison in the state of Rio de Janeiro, who were interviewed based on a semi - structured script. The data obtained, subject to the analysis of content in the thematic modality, gave rise to the category Protection factors of the mental health of the incarcerated women. Results: women have pointed to factors that protect their mental health: studying, working, performing leisure activities (singing, talking, reading) and religious activities. Conclusion: health promotion activities with a focus on mental health should be rethought in order to ensure the mental health of women deprived of their liberty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
