The article relates the author's perspectives about encouraging children to participate in competitive athletics. As a parent, the author believes that competitive sports help build self-esteem and make children successful in their adulthood. The author cites his personal experience being a competitive swimmer during his college years. He emphasizes that his collegiate training schedule prepared him to the rigors of medical school and residency. He concludes that given the proper structure, competitive sports can build character.
