Both mechanical and psychological overload are inherent to the work of nurses and paramedics, resulting spondylogenic pain.Aim of the studyTo identify potential risk factors influencing the prevalence of non-specific cervical spine pain in professionally active nurses and paramedics.Material and methods324 nurses (53.2% of the total) and 285 paramedics (46.8%) were included in the study−609 people in total. The study was carried out using an auditorium survey technique supervised by the researchers. The methods used were: Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, a spinal pain questionnaire validated according to IEA guidelines, a short version of the IPAQ and the author's survey questionnaire, concerning sociodemographic data, chronic diseases including metabolic syndrome (MetS). A univariate logistic regression model was used in the statistical analysis. The level of statistical significance was taken as p < 0.05.ResultsRecurrent NP was significantly more common in paramedics compared to nurses (29.5 % vs. 9.3 %; p < 0.0001). In a univariate logistic regression model, the risk of NP was significantly increased by: length of service > 15 years (p < 0.024), presence of: low back pain (p < 0.0001), type 2 diabetes (p = 0.013), hypertension (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.01). Of the modifiable factors, the risk of NP was significantly increased by high physical activity and short sleep

ObjectiveTo ensure the best possible care, the perspective of PHC nurse work experience during the COVID-19 pandemic should be considered when developing nursing care protocols for older patients who receive PHC services.MethodThis exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 18 nurses working continuously in PHC between the first and fifth waves of the pandemic. Semi-structured thematic interviews were undertaken. Qualitative thematic content analysis was conducted to identify and group the themes that emerged from the discourse. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsThe first topic describes the nurses’ experiences of physical and mental suffering in caring for older patients in response to the pandemic. The second topic covers the experience of reorganizing PHC work. The third topic focuses on the difficulties of caring for older patients. The final topic includes issues of support needs for nurses in PHC work.ConclusionThe experience and understanding of PHC nurses in caring for older people during the COVID pandemic should lead to significant changes in the system of nursing care for geriatric patients and in the cooperative role within geriatric care specialist teams. Drawing on the experience of COVID-19, it is necessary to work on the weak points of PHC exposed by the pandemic in order to improve the quality of care and life for geriatric patients.

Background: Minimising primary care professionals' (PCPs) risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection is crucial to ensure their safety as well as functioning health care system. PCPs' perspectives on the support they needed in the early stages of a public health crisis can inform future preparedness.Aim: To understand PCPs' experiences of providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic, with focus on personal risk from COVID-19 and testing.Design and Setting: Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with PCPs in England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Greece and Sweden, between April and July 2020.Method: Interviews were analysed using a combination of inductive and deductive thematic analysis techniques.Results: Eighty interviews were conducted, showing that PCPs tried to make sense of their risk of both contracting and severity of COVID-19 by assessing individual risk factors and perceived effectiveness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). They had limited access to PPE yet continued providing care as their “duty.” Some PCPs felt that they were put in high-risk situations when patients or colleagues were not flagging symptoms of COVID-19. Not having access to testing in the initial stages of the pandemic was somewhat accepted but when available, was valued.Conclusion: Access to adequate PPE and testing, as well as training for staff and education for patients about the importance of ensuring staff safety is crucial. Given PCPs' varied response in how they appraised personal risk and their tolerance for working, PCPs may benefit from the autonomy in deciding how they want to work during health emergencies.
