ObjectiveAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to worsening overall health outcomes and psychological diagnoses. Routine screening, particularly in patients with postpartum depression (PPD), would identify patients who could benefit from interventions to prevent the perpetuation of ACEs and establish a system of preventative care to mitigate the risks of adverse health outcomes associated with high ACE scores. The purpose of this study is to explore the link between ACEs and PPD to advocate for the use of the ACE questionnaire as a routine screening tool in all pregnant patients diagnosed with PPD. We hypothesize that a cohort of patients with PPD will be more likely to have high-risk ACE scores than the general female population.Study DesignOur IRB approved, retrospective cohort study identified all patients diagnosed with PPD at an academic medical center between January 2015 and December 2019. The subjects were identified using retrospective chart review. Subjects were recruited via telephone and asked to complete an ACE questionnaire. Questionnaires were sent via RedCap. ACE scores were calculated, categorized as 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 or more ACEs, and compared to the prevalence in the original Kaiser-CDC ACE study female cohort using a chi-square goodness-of-fit test.ResultsThere were 132/251 surveys completed (53% response rate). In our PPD population, 19.3% had 0 ACEs, 17.0% had 1 ACE, 13.1% had 2 ACEs, 16.5% had 3 ACEs, and 34.1% had 4 or more ACEs. These percentages were significantly different from the Kaiser-CDC ACE Study percentages of 34.5, 24.5, 15.5, 10.3, and 15.2%, respectively (p < 0.001).ConclusionOur unique study showed that women with PPD are more likely to have high-risk ACE scores than the general female population. This finding has important implications in regards to counseling, intervening to prevent perpetual ACEs, and establishing important provider-patient relationships for life-long preventative care.Non-gendered language is used when possible throughout. Cutaneous microcirculatory perfusion is commonly measured using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) probes, which provide a continuous, non-invasive quantification of skin blood flow (SkBF). However, inhomogeneities in the skin’s microvasculature density contribute to a decrease in reproducibility whenever an LDF probe is removed and replaced, as is the case during pre- and post-intervention or between-day measurements. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether increasing the total number of individual LDF probes in a localized area improves the reproducibility of the measurement. Seven laser Doppler probes were secured in a custom-made acrylic holder designed to attach to the skin’s surface easily. SkBF, local skin temperature (Tsk), and blood pressure (BP) were assessed in 11 participants (6 M, 5 F, 42 ± 15 years). SkBF and Tsk were measured from the dorsal forearm (arm trial) for 5 min. Next, the multi-laser device was moved to the lateral side of the calf (leg trial), and measurements were obtained for 5 min. Each arm and leg trial was cyclically repeated three times, and all trials were separated by intermissions lasting 10–15 min. The average SkBF and the cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) from all possible LDF probe combinations were not statistically different across the three arm and leg trials. Two-way mixed-effects models with absolute agreement were used to compute the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for CVC, and the minimum ICC increased with the addition of LDF probes. The ICC of the average CVC from seven LDF probes was 0.96 between the arm trials and 0.91 between the leg trials, which suggests that there is excellent reliability and little difference between trials following the removal and replacement of the device. Moreover, all individual ICC values from ≥3 LDF probe combinations were greater than 0.70 (i.e., good reliability). These data suggest that SkBF measurements with multiple laser Doppler probes in a custom-made holder have excellent reproducibility after replacing the probes within the same participant. Therefore, this application could provide more reproducible assessments between repeated measurements (e.g., before and after exercise or clinical procedures) where the LDF probes must be removed and replaced within the same location.

In bacteria, transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA) and SmpB comprise the most common and effective system for rescuing stalled ribosomes. Ribosomes stall on mRNA transcripts lacking stop codons and are rescued as the defective mRNA is swapped for the tmRNA template in a process known as trans-translation. The tmRNA–SmpB complex is recruited to the ribosome independent of a codon–anticodon interaction. Given that the ribosome uses robust discriminatory mechanisms to select against non-cognate tRNAs during canonical decoding, it has been hard to explain how this can happen. Recent structural and biochemical studies show that SmpB licenses tmRNA entry through its interactions with the decoding center and mRNA channel. In particular, the C-terminal tail of SmpB promotes both EFTu activation and accommodation of tmRNA, the former through interactions with 16S rRNA nucleotide G530 and the latter through interactions with the mRNA channel downstream of the A site. Here we present a detailed model of the earliest steps in trans-translation, and in light of these mechanistic considerations, revisit the question of how tmRNA preferentially reacts with stalled, non-translating ribosomes.

We present a novel paradigm to identify shared and unique brain regions underlying non-semantic, non-phonological, abstract, audio-visual (AV) memory versus naming using a longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment. Participants were trained to associate novel AV stimulus pairs containing hidden linguistic content. Half of the stimulus pairs were distorted images of animals and sine-wave speech versions of the animal’s name. Images and sounds were distorted in such a way as to make their linguistic content easily recognizable only after being made aware of its existence. Memory for the pairings was tested by presenting an AV pair and asking participants to verify if the two stimuli formed a learned pairing. After memory testing, the hidden linguistic content was revealed and participants were tested again on their recollection of the pairings in this linguistically informed state. Once informed, the AV verification task could be performed by naming the picture. There was substantial overlap between the regions involved in recognition of nonlinguistic sensory memory and naming, suggesting a strong relation between them. Contrasts between sessions identified left angular gyrus and middle temporal gyrus as key additional players in the naming network. Left inferior frontal regions participated in both naming and nonlinguistic AV memory suggesting the region is responsible for AV memory independent of phonological content contrary to previous proposals. Functional connectivity between angular gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus and left middle temporal gyrus increased when performing the AV task as naming. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that, at the spatial resolution of fMRI, the regions that facilitate nonlinguistic AV associations are a subset of those that facilitate naming though reorganized into distinct networks.

The relationships between the anatomical representation of semantic knowledge in the human brain and the timing of neurophysiological mechanisms involved in manipulating such information remain unclear. This is the case for superordinate semantic categorization – the extraction of general features shared by broad classes of exemplars (e.g. living vs. non-living semantic categories). We proposed that, because of the abstract nature, of this information, input from diverse input modalities (visual or auditory, lexical or non-lexical) should converge and be processed in the same regions of the brain, at similar time scales during superordinate categorization - specifically in a network of heteromodal regions, and late in the course of the categorization process. In order to test this hypothesis, we utilized electroencephalography and event related potentials (EEG/ERP) with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to characterize subjects’ responses as they made superordinate categorical decisions (living vs. nonliving) about objects presented as visual pictures or auditory words. Our results reveal that, consistent with our hypothesis, during the course of superordinate categorization, information provided by these diverse inputs appears to converge in both time and space: fMRI showed that heteromodal areas of the parietal and temporal cortices are active during categorization of both classes of stimuli. The ERP results suggest that superordinate categorization is reflected as a late positive component (LPC) with a parietal distribution and long latencies for both stimulus types. Within the areas and times in which modality independent responses were identified, some differences between living and non-living categories were observed, with a more widespread spatial extent and longer latency responses for categorization of non-living items.

Successful comprehension of syntactically complex sentences depends on online language comprehension mechanisms as well as reanalysis in working memory. To differentiate the neural substrates of these processes, we recorded EEG and MEG during sentence picture matching in healthy subjects, assessing the effects of two difficulty factors: syntactic complexity (object-embedded vs. subject-embedded relative clauses) and semantic reversibility on neuronal oscillations during sentence presentation, and during a subsequent memory delay prior to picture onset. Synthetic Aperture Magnetometry analysis of MEG showed that semantic reversibility induced left lateralized perisylvian power decreases in a broad frequency range, approximately 8-30 Hz. This effect followed the relative clause presentation and persisted throughout the remainder of the sentence and the subsequent memory delay period, shifting to a more frontal distribution during the delay. In contrast, syntactic complexity induced enhanced power decreases only during the delay period, in bilateral frontal and anterior temporal regions. These results indicate that detailed syntactic parsing of auditory language input may be augmented in the absence of alternative cues for thematic role assignment, as reflected by selective perisylvian engagement for reversible sentences, compared with irreversible sentences in which world knowledge constrains possible thematic roles. Furthermore, comprehension of complex syntax appears to depend on posthoc reanalysis in working memory implemented by frontal regions in both hemispheres.

With the wealth of missions selected to visit the lunar surface in the decade ahead, preparatory investigations into surface conditions are underway to explore potential challenges and science returns during these missions. One such mission, Lunar Vertex, is slated to explore a much-anticipated region-the lunar swirl and magnetic anomaly known as Reiner Gamma. Lunar swirls are unique natural laboratories for exploring solar wind interactions with partially magnetized rocky bodies, and possess characteristics that have not yet been observed on any other body in the Solar System. This work aims to combine current magnetic mapping of Reiner Gamma with ultraviolet wavelength datasets, towards further understanding the sensitivities of ultraviolet measurements in regions that may be partially magnetically shielded from solar wind weathering and magnetospheric plasma populations. Observations and models herein are collected and derived from orbital sources and will be used for comparison to future orbital and surface observations of Reiner Gamma by Lunar Vertex. Cell migration refers to the ability of cells to translocate across a substrate or through a matrix. To achieve net movement requires spatiotemporal regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. Computational approaches are necessary to identify and quantify the regulatory mechanisms that generate directed cell movement. To address this need, we developed computational tools, based on stochastic modeling, to analyze time series data for the position of randomly migrating cells. Our approach allows parameters that characterize cell movement to be efficiently estimated from cell track data. We applied our methods to analyze the random migration of Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts (MEFS) and HeLa cells. Our analysis revealed that MEFs exist in two distinct states of migration characterized by differences in cell speed and persistence, whereas HeLa cells only exhibit a single state. Further analysis revealed that the Rho-family GTPase RhoG plays a role in determining the properties of the two migratory states of MEFs. An important feature of our computational approach is that it provides a method for predicting the current migration state of an individual cell from time series data. Finally, we applied our computational methods to HeLa cells expressing a Rac1 biosensor. The Rac1 biosensor is known to perturb movement when expressed at overly high concentrations; at these expression levels the HeLa cells showed two migratory states, which correlated with differences in the spatial distribution of active Rac1. Background: Arrhythmias are prevalent cardiac disorders with significant impacts on patient quality of life and mortality. Amiodarone, a class III antiarrhythmic agent, is widely used to manage both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias due to its efficacy in prolonging the cardiac action potential and its multiple antiarrhythmic properties. While clinical trials have highlighted the safety and efficacy of amiodarone, there is limited real-world data on adverse events (AEs) associated with different administration routes. This study aims to address this gap by utilizing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to investigate the spectrum and timing of AEs related to amiodarone administration through disproportionality analysis and stratification methods. Methods: Data from the FAERS database were analyzed using disproportionality analysis and reporting odds ratio (ROR) methods for comparative analysis, and the Weibull distribution for time-to-adverse-event analysis. The study examined data from 2004 through the first quarter of 2024 to analyze adverse event signals and the time of occurrence between intravenous and oral amiodarone administration. Results: A total of 16,749 records of adverse reactions associated with amiodarone were identified. Among these, 2,412 events were related to intravenous amiodarone, and 8,220 events were related to oral amiodarone. The analysis revealed that cardiac and hepatic AEs were more common with intravenous administration, while pulmonary and thyroid-related AEs were more frequent with oral administration. Furthermore, the onset of adverse reactions varied significantly between the routes. The Weibull distribution analysis showed a median onset time of 5 days for intravenous administration compared to 74 days for oral administration. Both routes exhibited early failure-type signals, indicating a decreasing risk of AEs over time. Conclusion: Amiodarone exhibits varying adverse drug reactions and onset times across different routes of administration. Student mental health is linked to improved learning, and there has been significant international investment in policies, practices, and programs focused on preventing and responding to mental health conditions amongst young people. Accordingly, the number of mental health and wellbeing interventions now being implemented in education settings continues to grow, despite a lack of research on teacher readiness to implement such interventions. Numerous studies have associated educator stress and burnout with increased workloads, yet the complexity of student needs, coupled with an ongoing lack of support, continue to result in high rates of educator attrition. This paper presents the findings of a recent mixed methods study of educators from schools and universities in Australia. The research approach included three key activities: (i) a systematic document review and synthesis of literature and policy documents, (ii) a validated "teacher worry" questionnaire that explores reasons for worry amongst educators, and (iii) qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including educational psychologists, teachers, and preservice education coordinators. Correlation analysis suggests a relationship between individual sources of worry and intention to leave the profession, while thematic analysis offers insights into the experiences of educators, and their need for better support. Overall, the findings suggest that although teachers are already heavily burdened by their workload, they are increasingly subject to elevated expectations of dealing with diverse students' needs and behaviors. Introduction: One of the central aims in ecology is elucidating the mechanisms that shape community diversity. While biodiversity patterns across geographical gradients are often attributed both to local assembly processes and regional species pools, the distinct roles of these factors in shaping soil aerobic methanotrophic diversity remain underexplored. Methods: Using amplicon sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, this study focuses on comparing the relative importance of species pool and community assembly processes in shaping soil methanotrophic communities across three distinct plateaus in China: the Loess Plateau, the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, and the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Each of these plateaus includes three distinct steppe habitats: desert, meadow, and typical steppe. Results: Our findings reveal that pmoA beta (β)-diversity followed a distance-decay pattern, which declined with geographical distance at different rates depending on the steppe type and area, potentially due to diverse mechanisms of community assembly. Moreover, a decoupling between β -diversity and gamma-diversity observed, suggesting that local community assembly mechanisms primarily account for variations in β -diversity patterns. Furthermore, the relative significance of these assembly processes (e.g., dispersal limitation, drift, environmental filtering, and biotic interactions) varies according to spatial scales and steppe types. Notably, the differential environmental conditions (such as soil pH, yearly average temperature, and precipitation) across scales and steppe habitats primarily modulate the intensity of these assembly processes, thereby influencing β -diversity. Conclusion: In summary, our study emphasizes the crucial role of local community assembly in changing soil methanotrophic β -diversity's geographical patterns, highlighting the significance of a nuanced understanding of these processes for effective conservation and management strategies. As a metabolic center, the liver prevents inappropriate immune responses to abundant dietary antigens within the liver that could result in liver injury. This self-preservation mechanism can however decrease the efficiency of immunosurveillance of malignant cells by CD8 T cells. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is initiated by chronic viral infections, chronic alcohol consumption, and/or a fatty diet that leads to liver injury, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. HCC patients have high levels of dysfunctional and exhausted T cells, however, it is unclear which stage of HCC development contributes to T cell dysfunction. Repair of liver injury is initiated by interactions between injured hepatocytes and liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC), however, chronic injury can lead to fibrosis. Here, using a diethylnitrosamine/carbon tetrachloride (DEN/CCl4) mouse model of early HCC development, we demonstrate that chronic liver injury and fibrosis are sufficient to induce a CD8 T cell exhaustion signature with a corresponding increase in expression of immunosuppressive molecules on LSEC. We show that LSEC alter T cell function at various stages of T cell differentiation/activation. LSEC compete with dendritic cells presenting the same antigen to naïve CD8 T cells resulting in a unique T cell phenotype. Furthermore, LSEC abrogate killing of target cells, in an antigen-dependent manner, by previously activated effector CD8 T cells, and LSEC change the effector cell cytokine profile. Moreover, LSEC induce functional T cell exhaustion under low dose chronic stimulation conditions. Thus, LSEC critically regulate the balance between preventing/limiting liver injury and permitting sufficient tumor immunosurveillance with normal hepatic functions likely contributing to HCC development under conditions of chronic liver insult. Cell therapy of skeletal muscles is a promising approach for the prevention of muscular diseases and age-related muscle atrophy. However, cell transplantation to treat muscle atrophy that does not involve disease, such as sarcopenia, is considered impossible because externally injected cells rarely engraft into non-injured muscle tissue. Additionally, skeletal muscle-specific somatic stem cells, called satellite cells, lose their ability to adhere to tissue after being cultured in vitro and transforming into myoblasts. To overcome these hurdles, we explored using extracellular matrix (ECM) components to create a niche environment conducive for myoblasts during transplantation. We demonstrated that myoblasts mixed with ECM components can be engrafted into intact skeletal muscle and significantly increase muscle mass in a mouse model. These findings implicate cell transplantation therapy as a viable option for the treatment of sarcopenia. The findings will inform advancements in regenerative medicine for skeletal muscles. Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder of the nervous system that is mainly characterized by nighttime leg discomfort and can be accompanied by significant anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. RLS seriously affects the quality of life. Clinical studies have confirmed that acupuncture can alleviate the clinical symptoms of RLS. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of RLS and further explore the central response mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of RLS. Methods and analysis: In this RCT, a total of 124 eligible patients in Shanghai will be randomly assigned to one of the following two groups: treatment group (acupuncture) and control group (sham acupuncture). Treatment will be given three times per week for 4 consecutive weeks. The primary outcome is the International Restless Legs severity rating scale (IRLSS). The secondary outcomes are the RLS-Quality of Life (RLSQoL), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA). The objective evaluation tools will be polysomnography, positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET-CT), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain. All adverse effects will be assessed by the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale. Outcomes will be evaluated at baseline (1 week before the first intervention), during the intervention (the second week of the intervention), after the intervention (at the end of the intervention), at 1-month follow-up, and at 3-month follow-up. Ethics and dissemination: The trial has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (no. 2022-061). Background: Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) infection can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, leading to gastroenteritis, fever and other diseases in humans and animals. More and more studies have emphasized the broad prospects of probiotics in improving inflammation and oxidative stress, but the ability and mechanism of Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) to alleviate the inflammatory/oxidative reaction caused by pathogens are still unclear. Methods and results: In this study, we treated the mice with LA for 14 days, infected them with S. Typhimurium for 24 h, and sacrificed the mice to collect samples. We found that the early intervention of LA alleviated the pathological injury and reversed the down-regulation of the duodenal and hepatic tight junction protein mRNA levels caused by S. Typhimurium infection. Compared with S. Typhimurium group, LA early intervention increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes, but decreased the levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-8 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Additionally, LA early intervention significantly increased Nrf2 mRNA expression in the liver and decreased Keap1 mRNA expression in the duodenum compared to the S. Typhimurium group. Furthermore, early LA treatment reduced the abundance of Bacteroides acidificiens , increased the abundance of Akkermansia , and alleviated the decrease in SCFAs levels in the cecum of S. Typhimurium-infected mice. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was a certain correlation between cecal flora and serum indicators and short chain fatty acids. Endophytes typically coexist with plants in symbiosis and transition into the saprobic system as plant tissues senesce, participating in the decomposition process of litter. However, the dynamic changes of endophytic communities during this process and their role in litter decomposition remain unclear. This study tracked the microbial composition across the transition from live leaves to litter in Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl (C. camphora) , evaluating the contribution of endophytes to litter decomposition by examining microbial diversity, community assembly, and co-occurrence networks along the endophyte-to-saprotroph spectrum. The results revealed increasing bacterial diversity but stable fungal diversity, and the diversity of endogenous microbes is mirrored this in the saprophytic phase. Bacterial community assembly was characterized by deterministic processes during the symbiotic phase, shifted to stochastic processes during the saprophytic phase. In contrast, fungal community assembly was predominantly driven by stochastic processes throughout the continuum. Out of the 49 keystone taxa identified, only Pseudorhodoplanes sinuspersici demonstrated a significant positive correlation with community assembly. All identified bacterial keystone taxa during the saprophytic phase originated from endophytic sources, and around 80% of the fungal keystone taxa in the initial stages of decomposition were similarly endophytic in origin. Additionally, 60% of the dominant bacterial taxa and 28% of the dominant fungal taxa at the commencement of decomposition were of endophytic descent. This suggests that endogenous microbes possess the potential to evolve into both keystone and dominant taxa during the saprophytic phase. Endogenous keystone and dominant microbes both exhibited significant correlations with microbial network, indicating their substantial ecological presence in microbial community. Both endogenous keystone and dominant taxa exerted significant potential influences on litter decomposition. Overall, during the saprophytic phase, endophytes are likely to influence the assemblage of microbial communities, the network structure, and decomposition-related functions. Bivalve mollusks are globally distributed in marine and freshwater habitats. While exhibiting a relatively uniform bodyplan that is characterized by their eponymous bivalved shell that houses the soft-bodied animal, many lineages have acquired unique morphological, physiological, and molecular innovations that account for their high adaptability to the various properties of aquatic environments such as salinity, flow conditions, or substrate composition. This renders them ideal candidates for studies into the evolutionary trajectories that have resulted in their diversity, but also makes them important players for research concerned with climate change-induced warming and acidification of aquatic habitats. Some species, such as the blue and Mediterranean as well as the zebra and quagga mussels, form biodegradable fibers, the byssus threads. These have significant potential for biomimetic approaches by aiding in developing sustainable textiles and other fiber-based fabrics. Despite this broad span of scientific relevance, bivalves remain dramatically understudied and key resources such as high-quality genomes and developmental transcriptomes in combination with established laboratory protocols to carry out state-of-the-art molecular and morphological studies are only available for less than a handful of species. Here, we report on one of the best-investigated bivalves in this respect, the quagga mussel, Dreissena rostriformis , an invasive freshwater species. We summarize the current state of knowledge and available resources that make the quagga mussel highly amenable for studying adaptive mechanisms for life in hypoosmotic environments, biomineralization, biomimetics, and evolutionary developmental biology. We argue that the unique combination of biological features and the broad relevance of the quagga mussel for the basic and the applied sciences as well as for biomonitoring and conservation biology measures call for intensified research efforts using Dreissena rostriformis as a model. Background: Many people with depression, for which self-blame plays a key role, are not amenable to current standard psychological treatments. This calls for novel self-guided interventions, which require less attention and motivation. The present study sought to establish proof-of-concept for a novel self-guided intervention in a non-clinical sample, which prompts people to transform self-blaming feelings into "longing," as a related unpleasant, but presumably more adaptive and approach-related emotion, which plays a key role in many musical and literary genres but has been largely overlooked in clinical research. Methods: Thirty nine participants with no previous self-reported history of mental disorders, but who experienced frequent feelings of self-blame were enrolled remotely (n = 3 lost to follow-up). Self-blaming thoughts, along with depressive symptoms and other outcomes, were assessed pre- and post-intervention to determine the potential of the intervention, which consisted of creating a 10-min video starting with self-blame evoking materials, transitioning to sadness and finally longing. Participants were then asked to watch their video daily for 7 days. Results: The number of participants lost to follow-up was low (n = 3) and engagement with the intervention was very high. As predicted, the intervention significantly reduced depressive symptoms on our primary outcome measure (Beck's Depression Inventory, BDI-II, Cohen's d = 0.40) after 1 week. This was further confirmed by a reduction on the Maudsley-modified Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Unexpectedly, no changes were observed on the non-clinical measures. Limitations: A randomized controlled trial design is needed to determine whether these symptom reductions were causally related to the intervention. Additionally, our findings may not generalize to men, due to our inability to recruit a sex-balanced sample. Conclusion: As predicted, participants benefited from being prompted to transform self-blaming feelings into those related to longing which shows the feasibility and potential to be further developed in people with clinical depression. Introduction: Empathy is a fundamental element of high-quality healthcare, though it has been shown to be in decline among medical students and residents. Appeals have therefore been made for the development of evidence-based empathy-enhancing experiential learning and training models. Bringing Art to Life (BATL) is a service-learning program designed within experiential learning pedagogy for psychology and pre-healthcare students. Intergenerational relationships are fostered with people with dementia through art therapy and life story/narrative at a community-based adult day services center. Methods: In this sequential mixed methods study, quantitative data were collected via electronic surveys of students in this course compared with students in didactic introductory psychology or psychology and aging courses. Survey measures included empathy, mindfulness, positive and negative affect, future time perspective, and attitudes toward older adults and working with people with dementia. Weekly BATL student journals submitted as part of their course requirements were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Within-subjects analyses of variance revealed increases in empathy and positive affect, broadened time perspective, and improved attitudes toward older adults and people with dementia among students in the BATL course compared with other undergraduate students. Analysis of BATL student journals supported and deepened understanding of these findings, with themes including attitude change, relationship building fostering existential awareness and self-development, art fostering social interactions, and perceived program effectiveness. Discussion: The findings suggest that BATL strongly supports increased empathetic attitudes and decreased stigma of aging in psychology and pre-healthcare students. Intergenerational expressive arts-based programs like BATL should be implemented in healthcare education to enhance empathy and improve attitudes toward aging and dementia care. Among forest trees, poplar trees (Populus L.) have attracted attention in global forestry as a promising material for improving the quality and quantity of urban landscapes. These plants provide wood, which can be utilized as raw resources for the paper industry and as a potential source of biofuel. However, several biotic stresses, such as attacks by pests and pathogens, severely affect poplar production and productivity. The improvement of Populus trees through conventional tree breeding methods is restricted due to their long-life cycles and the lack of suitable donors with resistance genes. Populus has been utilized as a model plant for studying gene functions due to its highly efficient genetic transformation capabilities. The present review will provide a comprehensive overview of pest and pathogen attacks on poplar, focusing on their infection mechanisms, transmission routes, and control strategies. Additionally, it will examine the most widely used genetic transformation methods (gene gun-mediated, Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated, protoplast transformation, micro-RNA mediated and micro-RNA clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated (CRISPR-Cas) systems methods and RNA interference) for improving tolerance in poplar trees against pest and pathogens attack. Furthermore, it will delve into prospects, challenges, and recent advances in molecular biology tools and their safe application for genetic transformation to improve insect and pest resistance in poplar trees. Ethiopia's vulnerability to climate change is exacerbated by high poverty rates, rapid population growth, increasing prevalence of vector-borne diseases, and heavy reliance on rain-fed agriculture. This narrative review aims to compile existing data on the impacts of climate extremes on the physical environment, public health, and livelihoods in Ethiopia, thereby highlighting the significance of this region for such a study. Data were sourced from peer-reviewed journal articles from databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as reports and other unpublished documents. Results show that Ethiopia is facing increasing frequency, severity, duration, and timing of climate-related extreme events. Key challenges include environmental degradation, reduced crop yields, recurring floods, droughts, famines, increased heat waves, and spread of infectious diseases. Average daily rainfall is projected to decrease from 2.04 mm (1961–1990) to 1.97 mm (2070–2099), indicating a worsening climate trend. Moreover, the average annual temperature has risen by 1.3°C since 1960, at a rate of 0.28°C per decade. Flood records indicate a sharp rise, with 274 flood incidents recorded in 2020, causing extensive damage, including an annual soil loss of 1 billion tons in the Ethiopian highlands, reducing land productivity by 2.2% annually. Droughts from 1964 to 2023 affected 96.5 million people, reduced GDP by 4%, decreased agricultural output by 12%, and increased inflation rates by 15%. The regions of Afar, Somali, Gambella, and Benshangul Gumuz exhibit extreme vulnerability to health impacts due to rising temperatures. A cornerstone of memory science is the finding that the medial temporal lobe plays a critical role in supporting episodic long-term memory. However, the role that this brain region plays in supporting other forms of memory such as working memory is controversial. In this selective review, we describe some of the key studies that have informed our current understanding of the role that the medial temporal lobe plays in working memory. We first describe the early studies that supported the idea that the medial temporal lobe is selectively important for long-term episodic memory function, then discuss the subsequent research that indicated that the hippocampus also plays a critical role in visual perception and visual working memory. We then review more recent work suggesting that the medial temporal lobe, and particularly the hippocampus, is critical in supporting a familiarity-based memory signal in working memory, and we propose that this function may not be limited to the visual domain, but rather may support familiarity for auditory working memory as well. Introduction: Encouraging proactive behavior among employees is a crucial pathway for companies to adapt swiftly and gain a competitive edge. In contrast to other forms of organizational citizenship behavior that tend to preserve existing work practices within the organization, Challenge-Oriented Organizational Citizenship Behavior (COCB) aims to improve upon these by offering constructive suggestions and altering employees' work methods, policies, and procedures for the benefit of the organization. However, not all employees are willing to engage in COCB, even when the organization actively encourages participation. Departing from traditional perspectives on workplace environments and leadership, we propose that psychological empowerment at the individual level may be a precursor to employees' engagement in COCB. Methods: Based on social exchange theory, this study examines how employees' psychological empowerment affects their challengeoriented organizational citizenship behavior (COCB), including the mediating roles of perceived insider status and affective commitment, as well as the moderating role of Chinese traditionality. Data was collected from 223 employees of manufacturing, IT, finance and service enterprises in Southern China using a multi-source and multi-wave survey. Results: Results of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) show that psychological empowerment can positively affect COCB. Both perceived insider status and affective commitment act as mediators in the relationship between psychological empowerment and COCB. Moreover, Chinese traditionality has a moderating effect on the relationship between psychological empowerment and these mediators, and also the indirect effect of psychological empowerment on COCB. Specifically, the indirect effect was stronger when employees with lower levels of Chinese traditionality. Discussion: This study provides a theoretical foundation for the individual-level antecedents of COCB, elucidating how the social exchange process between employees and the organization is transformed into COCB through psychological empowerment. The Russian dandelion (Taraxacum koksaghyz) is a promising source of natural rubber (NR). The synthesis of NR takes place on the surface of organelles known as rubber particles, which are found in latex – the cytoplasm of specialized cells known as laticifers. As well as the enzymes directly responsible for NR synthesis, the rubber particles also contain small rubber particle proteins (SRPPs), the most abundant of which are SRPP3, 4 and 5. These three proteins support NR synthesis by maintaining rubber particle stability. We used homology-based searches to identify the whole TkSRPP gene family and qPCR to create their spatial expression profiles. Affinity enrichment-mass spectrometry was applied to identify TkSRPP3/4/5 protein interaction partners in T. koksaghyz latex and selected interaction partners were analyzed using qPCR, confocal laser scanning microscopy and heterologous expression in yeast. We identified 17 SRPP-like sequences in the T. koksaghyz genome, including three apparent pseudogenes, 10 paralogs arranged as an inverted repeat in a cluster with TkSRPP3/4/5 , and one separate gene (TkSRPP6). Their sequence diversity and different expression profiles indicated distinct functions and the latex interactomes obtained for TkSRPP3/4/5 suggested that TkSRPP4 is a promiscuous hub protein that binds many partners from different compartments, whereas TkSRPP3 and 5 have more focused interactomes. Two interactors shared by TkSRPP3/4/5 (TkSRPP6 and TkUGT80B1) were chosen for independent validation and detailed characterization. TkUGT80B1 triterpenoid glycosylating activity provided first evidence for triterpenoid saponin synthesis in T. koksaghyz latex. Based on its identified interaction partners, TkSRPP4 appears to play a special role in the endoplasmic reticulum, interacting with lipidmodifying enzymes that may facilitate rubber particle formation. TkSRPP5 appears to be involved in GTPase-dependent signaling and TkSRPP3 may act as part of a kinase signaling cascade, with roles in stress tolerance. TkSRPP interaction with TkUGT80B1 draws a new connection between TkSRPPs and triterpenoid saponin synthesis in T. koksaghyz latex. Our data contribute to the functional differentiation between TkSRPP paralogs and demonstrate unexpected interactions that will help to further elucidate the network of proteins linking TkSRPPs, stress responses and NR biosynthesis within the cellular complexity of latex. A broad set of tools, frameworks, and guidance documents are available for water resources project planning, design, evaluation, and implementation in an ever-evolving world. The principles underlying most of these resources aim to advance the practice of water systems engineering under uncertainty, preserve and enhance project benefits, and achieve investment goals. Approaches to financial and economic evaluation under climate uncertainty in civil infrastructure investments, in particular, are currently being reviewed by academics and practitioners in the field to assess their ability to deliver resilience, sustainability, and equity. In climate-sensitive projects, adaptation measures that help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and preserve project benefits are required, and stakeholder willingness-to-pay (WTP) for these must be assessed. Typically, stakeholders and decision-makers utilize the outcomes of economic assessment methods such as cost–benefit analysis (CBA) to justify large capital investments. Synthesizing previous advancements in water resources planning and evaluation, this study illustrates how a CBA framework can be augmented by applying a Climate-informed Robustness Index (CRI). The analytics underpinning the CRI, as well as the summary metric itself, help characterize project climate vulnerability, while conducting CBA with and without potential adaptation measures can be used to estimate WTP of investors for adaptation to the identified climate vulnerabilities. The case study of a planned irrigated agriculture project in Lesotho highlights critical climate conditions for which adaptation measures such as integrated catchment management (ICM) plans can be introduced to safeguard project robustness. Background: Mental health among higher education students is a critical public health concern, with numerous studies documenting its impact on student well-being and academic performance. However, comprehensive research on the factors contributing to mental health deterioration, including barriers to seeking psychological help, remains insufficient. Gathering evidence on this topic is crucial to advancing policies, advocacy, and improving mental health services in higher education. Objective: This review explores the unique challenges faced by vulnerable student groups and highlights the factors influencing student well-being and academic engagement, including those exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The review also addresses barriers to accessing mental health services across various regions and provides evidence-informed recommendations for improving mental health policies and services in higher education, covering both well-researched and underexplored contexts. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes findings from over 50 studies on mental health in higher education. A targeted search was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus for studies published between 2013 and 2023. Data were analyzed through a deductive thematic content analysis approach, focusing on key predetermined themes related to student well-being, barriers to mental health services, and recommendations for policy improvements. Results: Several factors influence the mental health of higher education students, with vulnerable groups—including women, minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged, international, and first-year students—experiencing higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Factors that impact students' well-being and academic performance include academic pressure, financial stress, lack of social support, isolation, trauma, lack of inclusive practices, and pandemic-related stressors. Institutional barriers, inconsistent well-being measures, data-sharing issues, and regulatory limitations hinder students' access to mental health services, while stigma and lack of trust in mental health professionals impede care. Conclusion: Improving mental health strategies in higher education requires enhancing mental health services, addressing socioeconomic inequalities, improving digital literacy, standardizing services, involving youth in service design, and strengthening research and collaboration. Faced with the increasingly serious problem of water scarcity, developing precise irrigation strategies for crops in saline alkali land can effectively reduce the negative effects of low water resource utilization. Using a model to simulate the dynamic changes in soil water and salt environment in the root zone of fragrant pear trees in saline alkali land, and verifying them from a production practice perspective with comprehensive benefits as the goal, can optimize the irrigation amount and irrigation technology elements of saline alkali fruit trees, broaden the comprehensive evaluation perspective of decision-makers, and have important significance for improving the yield and production efficiency of forestry and fruit industry in arid and semi-arid areas worldwide. In this study, a two-year field experiment based on three irrigation levels (3000, 3750, and 4500 m3·ha−1) and four emitter discharge rates (1, 2, 3, and 4 L·h−1) was conducted in Xinjiang, China. The root zone soil water content (SWC) and soil salinity content (SSC) dynamics were simulated during the fertility period of fragrant pear using the numerical model HYDRUS-2D and field data. The results showed that the R2, root mean squared error (RMSE), and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) of the HYDRUS-2D simulated soil water content (SWC) (soil salinity content SSC) reached 0.89–0.97 (0.91–0.97), 0.02–0.16 cm3·cm-3 (0.22–1.54 g·kg−1), and 0.76–0.95 (0.68–0.96), respectively, indicating the strong performance of the model. A positive correlation was observed between the irrigation amount and soil infiltration depth. Moderately increasing irrigation amount could effectively leach soil salinity at a depth of 80–100 cm and maintain a water and salt environment in the main root zone of 0–80 cm, benefiting the growth and development of the main root system of fragrant pear, as well as the yield and quality of above-ground fruits. The irrigation amount and emitter discharge were optimized and quantified based on multi-objective optimization methods, normalization processing, and spatial analysis methods to maximize yield, fruit weight, soluble solids, and net profits. When the yield, fruit weight, soluble solids, and net profits simultaneously reached 90% of their maximum value, the irrigation amount and emitter discharge ranges were 4274–4297 m3·ha−1 and 3.79–3.88 L·h−1, respectively. Our study provides new insights into regulating soil water and salt environmental factors in the saline fragrant pear root zone and assessing the impact of soil water and salt management under precision irrigation strategies, and profoundly influences decision-making for irrigation of forest fruits in saline arid zones based on a production practice perspective. Introduction: Plant protection products (PPPs) such as pesticides and herbicides are experiencing increased use worldwide. In the context of PPP authorization and registration, water exposure assessments (drinking water and aquatic exposure) use numerical modeling to simulate relevant hydrological processes and exposure pathways. A common practice for estimating PPP leaching to groundwater, PPP loading onto surface water via tile drainage, or PPP transport via runoff utilizes multiple one-dimensional models, each representing a separate exposure pathway. Separate analysis of individual exposure pathways can result in disparate assumptions being made that represent relative worst-case scenarios for each pathway, rather than an integrated reasonable worst-case scenario for all pathways. Methods: The interplay between PPP degradation, leaching to groundwater, transport in tile drainage, and runoff is well-suited for simulation using an integrated surface–subsurface hydrologic and chemical fate and transport model. This study presents functionality added to HydroGeoSphere (HGS), a three-dimensional, fully integrated, surface–subsurface hydrologic model. HGS was verified against other recognized models: PRZM, HYDRUS, PEARL, PELMO, and MACRO. Added features include automatic irrigation, non-linear adsorption, temperature and soil water content-dependent degradation, and solute uptake by plant roots. Results and Discussion: HGS results for leaching of PPP mass to groundwater showed the highest correlation, lowest error, and lowest bias relative to PEARL model results. Simulation of macropore flow to tile drains in HGS produced an intermittent tile drain flow in summer that resulted in generally lower peak effluent concentrations compared to the MACRO model. Simulation of runoff in HGS produced a higher total runoff compared to the PRZM model, attributed to lower evapotranspiration in HGS. Drought assessment and management, intensified by global warming, present critical challenges in semi-arid Mediterranean regions, impacting environmental sustainability and economic stability. This study evaluates spatiotemporal drought risk in the Bouregreg watershed in northwest Morocco by integrating remote sensing data with various drought indices. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and the Standardized Temperature Index (STI) were utilized to assess meteorological drought over a 12-month period. The Temperature Conditions Index (TCI) was used to evaluate temperature-related conditions for agricultural drought, while the GRACE Drought Severity Index (GRACEDSI) assessed hydrological drought on a monthly scale. Additionally, trend analysis was performed using Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope methods, and Pearson correlations were conducted among the indices. The findings revealed an overall downward trend in drought indices, with evapotranspiration (SPEI) being the primary drought driver. Over the study period, there was a significant increase in total evaporation demand, largely attributed to rising temperatures (STI and TCI). Meanwhile, precipitation conditions (SPI) remained relatively stable, highlighting the impact of global warming on agricultural and hydrological drought severity patterns in recent years. The results further indicated that drought risk is more pronounced in the plateau and plain areas of the Bouregreg compared to the mountainous regions. In evaluating water reserves, total water storage (TWS) data obtained from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) was utilized. Comparisons were made between in situ groundwater level (GWL) data and those from GRACE TWS at a resolution of 0.25°. Our results reveal concordant trends between the two datasets, despite the differences in resolution. The TWS appears to be strongly correlated with GWL measurements and precipitation data with a lag of 1–4 months. The findings underscored a significant decline in water reserves and worsening drought conditions in recent years. Correlation analyses also revealed a moderate relationship between this decline and the systematic temperature rise, suggesting shared trends influenced by other anthropogenic factors not accounted for in the analysis. Plasma injections result from an imbalance in the centrifugal, total pressure gradient, and magnetic tension forces acting on plasma in the magnetosphere. Plasma originating from Enceladus tends to move outward due to centrifugal forces while reconnected flux tubes that are depleted of plasma collapse because of the magnetic tension leading to plasma injections. As the flux tube moves inward and contracts, the ambient density and pressure increase sufficiently to resist further collapse and the injected flux tube brakes. During this process the flux tube may also lose its integrity due to particle drifts, which allow exchange of plasma with adjacent flux tubes so as to bring the flux tube closer to equilibrium and stability so that it is indistinguishable from adjacent plasma. Stability parameters using this energy approach are defined and examined. The results show that the net forces push the plasma moves inward for L > 11 and outward for L < 8.5, while equilibrium is generally reached for 8.5 < L < 11, where L is the equatorial magnetic field crossing measured in Saturnian radii. Voluntary genetic testing (GT) leverages low-cost DNA sequencing and other testing methods to provide genetic risk screening for healthy individuals. Given the potential to prevent disease and promote health, some employers now offer GT as an employee benefit (workplace GT, or wGT), but participation remains low. To investigate facilitators and barriers to wGT participation, we conducted one of the first representative surveys of working U.S. adults on this topic (n = 958). We assessed factors that could influence participation, including: sponsoring entity (health provider or employer), program design, and individual demographics. Two-thirds (68%) of respondents indicated willingness to participate in some type of GT, but only half (49%) expressed willingness to participate through their employer. Women were 60% more willing to participate than men, and individuals with previous genetic testing experience were 143% more willing to participate than those without such experience. Across all demographic groups, certain GT program design features tended to increase or decrease willingness to participate. The ability to have one's data deleted from the GT database increased willingness most often (true for 67% of respondents), while selling data to pharmaceutical companies decreased willingness most often (true for 63% of respondents). All terrestrial plants possess a hydrophobic cuticle in the outermost layer of their aerial organs that is composed of cutin and wax. The cuticle serves as the first barrier between the plant and the surrounding environment and plays a key role in the resistance of plants to abiotic and biotic stressors. Additionally, they are closely associated with plant growth and development. Cuticular wax has attracted considerable attention as the main mediator of cuticular functions. In this review, we summarize the advances in the research investigating wheat cuticular wax, focusing on three aspects that include biosynthesis, genetics, and stress responses. Sleep disturbances are posited to play a key role in the development of poor mental and physical health outcomes related to early life adversity (ELA), in part through effects on brain development. Language development is critically important for health and developmental outcomes across the lifespan, including academic achievement and emotion regulation. Yet, very little research has focused on the dynamic contributions of ELA, sleep, and brain development on language outcomes. In this mini review, we summarize the current pediatric literature independently connecting ELA and sleep to language development, as well as the effects of ELA and sleep on language-relevant aspects of brain structure and function. We then propose a framework suggesting that sleep disturbances and subsequent effects on brain structure and function may act as key mechanisms linking ELA and language development. Future research investigating the associations among ELA, sleep, brain, and language development will refine our proposed framework and identify whether sleep should be included as an intervention target to mitigate the effects of early life adversity on language development. The failure to notice changes to objects is called change blindness, and it is often studied with the flicker task. Observers performing this task see two rapidly alternating but slightly different stimulus displays that are usually photos of real-world scenes. In order to detect the change, they must compare objects in the pre-change scene with objects at the same locations in the post-change scene to determine whether they are the same or different. It has been proposed that change blindness can occur when the memory representation of a pre-change object is incomplete and thereby impairs the same/different comparison with the post-change object at the same location. It has also been proposed that even with intact pre-change object memory representations, failure of same/different comparisons for other reasons can cause change blindness. The goal of the current study was to conduct flicker task experiments to examine both proposals. We conducted the current experiments with non-photographic stimuli, varied the degree of feature-based change of colored lines and found that the greater degree of change, the faster the same/different comparisons, and the faster that changes were detected. We also examined the representation integrity account of change blindness by comparing detection times of target objects that underwent a single feature change with those that underwent multiple sequential feature changes. The latter were detected faster, which suggests that multiple identities of these sequentially changing objects were stored in memory and facilitated change detection. In another experiment we found that objects that underwent multiple sequential feature changes were not detected as fast as those that underwent multiple simultaneous feature changes. This is consistent with the representation account of change blindness and suggests that memories of multiple sequentially changing object identities are transient and may become less complete over time. And more generally that multiple simultaneous and multiple sequential feature-based changes to these stimuli can show the extent to which memory is involved when searching for flicker task targets. Introduction: Semantic relations are crucial in various cognitive processes, highlighting the need to understand concept interactions and how such relations are represented in the brain. Psycholinguistics research requires computationally grounded datasets that include word similarity measures controlled for the variables that play a significant role in lexical processing. This work presents a dataset for noun pairs in Basque and European Spanish based on two well-known Natural Language Processing resources: text corpora and knowledge bases. Methods: The dataset creation consisted of three steps, (1) computing four key psycholinguistic features for each noun; concreteness, frequency, semantic, and phonological neighborhood density; (2) pairing nouns across these four variables; (3) for each noun pair, assigning three types of word similarity measurements, computed out of text, Wordnet and hybrid embeddings. Results: A dataset of noun pairs in Basque and Spanish involving three types of word similarity measurements, along with four lexical features for each of the nouns in the pair, namely, word frequency, concreteness, and semantic and phonological neighbors. The selection of the nouns for each pair was controlled by the mentioned variables, which play a significant role in lexical processing. The dataset includes three similarity measurements, based on their embedding computation: semantic relatedness from text-based embeddings, pure similarity from Wordnet-based embeddings and both categorical and associative relations from hybrid embeddings. Discussion: The present work covers an existent gap in Basque and Spanish in terms of the lack of datasets that include both word similarity and detailed lexical properties, which provides a more useful resource for psycholinguistics research in those languages. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are rimmed by discontinuous fringing reef that is in general wider on western margin vs the eastern margin. This study characterizes the facies updip from the modern fringing reefs to the present shoreline of south Andaman and Swaraj Dweep, and describes in detail the coral terraces/carpets within and above the inter-tidal zone representing the Holocene Fringing reef. Field studies, satellite, and drone datasets have been utilized to map different facies, that include: coralgal boundstone, biodetrital-grainstone, beachrock, and coralgal rudstone. Multiple exposed microatolls as well as coral terraces (coral carpets) of Acropora and Porites (dated 8.7-8.4 ka BP) have been identified within the intertidal zone (Radhanagar Beach, Swaraj Dweep) indicating that Holocene fringing reef have down-stepped offshore to the current location of modern fringing reefs owing to either tectonics or eustasy. The eustatic sea-level fluctuations are relatively well established for the Holocene and we compute the tectonic uplift rates utilizing the stream-power-incision and linear-inversion model. A tectonic uplift rate of ~ 0.05 mm/yr (for Swaraj Dweep) during the past 100 ka is estimated, while taking into account a wide range of erodibility indexes and response time intervals. It is identified that the computed uplift rate is an amalgamation of the coseismic deformation along with the interseismic and aseismic surface deformation. Thus, not all exposed coral terraces/microatolls are exposed due to coseismic deformation (for example uplift in parts of Andaman due to earthquake in 2004). The average long-term uplift rates are a magnitude lower than the eustatic sea-level fall rates during Holocene, thus, we suggest that most of the Holocene fringing reefs are exposed due to eustatic sea-level fall and down-stepped to the current location of the modern fringing reefs. This would entail that the eustatic sea-level change rates would play a significant role in determining future of the modern fringing reef (catch-up vs keep up vs give up), and the coastal morphology of south Andaman and Swaraj Dweep, with implications for coastal inundation and stability in the scenario of climate change.
