Coastal wetlands play an important role in the global water and biogeochemical cycles. Climate change makes it more difficult for these ecosystems to adapt to the fluctuation in sea levels and other environmental changes. Given the importance of eco-geomorphological processes for coastal wetland resilience, many eco-geomorphology models differing in complexity and numerical schemes have been developed in recent decades. However, their divergent estimates of the response of coastal wetlands to climate change indicate that substantial structural uncertainties exist in these models. To investigate the structural uncertainty of coastal wetland eco-geomorphology models, we developed a multi-algorithm model framework of eco-geomorphological processes, such as mineral accretion and organic matter accretion, within a single hydrodynamics model. The framework is designed to explore possible ways to represent coastal wetland eco-geomorphology in Earth system models and reduce the related uncertainties in global applications. We tested this model framework at three representative coastal wetland sites: two saltmarsh wetlands (Venice Lagoon and Plum Island Estuary) and a mangrove wetland (Hunter Estuary). Through the model-data comparison, we showed the importance of using a multi-algorithm ensemble approach for more robust predictions of the evolution of coastal wetlands. We also found that more observations of mineral and organic matter accretion at different elevations of coastal wetlands and evaluation of the coastal wetland models at different sites in diverse environments can help reduce the model uncertainty. Background: To quantify the changes in dynamic visual acuity (DVA) and explain the hidden reasons after acute exposure to hypobaric hypoxia status. Methods: The study group comprised 18 healthy male and 15 healthy female participants aged 20-24 years old. DVA was measured with the self-developed software of Meidixin (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. Measurements were taken at eight altitudes. Data analysis was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, paired sample T-test, and two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measurements. Results: At constant altitude, DVA showed an overall decreasing trend with increasing angular velocity and a fluctuating decrease at the vast majority of altitudes. At constant angular velocities, DVA gradually increased with altitude, with the most pronounced increase in DVA at altitude 5, and thereafter a gradual decrease in DVA as altitude increased. Finally, as altitude decreased, DVA increased again and reached a higher level at the end of the experiment, which was superior to the DVA in the initial state. Conclusion: Under a hypobaric hypoxic environment at high altitude, DVA was affected by the angular velocity and the degree of hypoxia, manifesting as an increase or decrease in DVA, which affects the pilot's observation of the display and control interfaces during the driving process, acquisition of information, and decision-making ability, which in turn may potentially jeopardize the safety of the flight. The study aimed to explore the similarities and differences in gut microorganisms and their functions in regulating body mass in Eothenomys miletus across different altitudes in the Hengduan Mountains when exposed to a high-fat diet. Eothenomys miletus specimens were gathered from Dali (DL) and Xianggelila (XGLL) in Yunnan Province, China, and categorized into control, high-fat (1 week of high-fat diet), and re-feeding groups (1 week of high-fat diet followed by 2 weeks of standard food). The analysis utilized 16S rRNA sequencing to assess the diversity and structure of intestinal microbial communities in E. miletus. The investigation focused on the impact of high-fat diet consumption and different altitudes on gut microbial diversity, structure, and physiological markers. Results revealed that a high-fat diet influenced the beta diversity of gut microorganisms in E. miletus, leading to variations in microbial community structure between the two regions with different altitudes. High-fat food significantly affected body mass, white adipose tissue mass, triglycerides, and leptin levels, but not food intake. Specific intestinal microorganisms were observed in the high-fat groups, aiding in food digestion and being enriched in particular flora. In particular, microbial genera like Lactobacillus and Hylemonella were enriched in the highfat group of DL. The enriched microbiota in the control group was associated with plant polysaccharide and cellulose decomposition. Following a high-fat diet, gut microbiota adapted to support lipid metabolism and energy supply, while upon re-feeding, the focus shifted back to cellulose digestion. These findings suggested that alterations in gut microbial composition, alongside physiological markers, play a vital role in adaptation of E. miletus to the diverse habitats of the Hengduan Mountains at varying altitudes. A 78-year-oldman with dementia experienced waxing and waning of symptoms with changes in altitude as he traveled from his home in the Rocky Mountains to lower elevations and back. To replicate the improvement in his symptoms with travel to lower elevations (higher pressure), the patient was treated with a near-identical repressurization in a hyperbaric chamber using compressed air. With four 1-h treatments at 1.3 Atmospheres Absolute (ATA) and concurrent administration of low-dose oral glutathione amino acid precursors, he recovered speech and showed improvement in activities of daily living. Regional broadcast media had documented his novel recovery. Nosocomial COVID-19 and withdrawal of hyperbaric air therapy led to patient demise 7 months after initiation of treatment. Altitude and ultraviolet (UV) radiation may affect the community composition and distribution of microorganisms in soil ecosystems. In this study, 49 soil samples from 10 locations were collected from different elevations on the eastern Pamir Plateau and analyzed for soil microbial community structure and function using high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil samples from different elevations of the eastern Pamir Plateau contained 6834 OTUs in 26 phyla and 399 genera. The dominant phyla common to different elevations were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Gemmatimonadota. The dominant genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, and Solirubrobacter. Species richness increased slightly with elevation, and there were significant differences in community composition between the elevations. Elevation and UV exposure are important factors that drive changes in bacterial communities. The results of the KEGG pathway showed that drug resistance, antineoplastic, aging, replication, and repair were enhanced and then slightly decreased with increasing elevation. Bacterial communities at different elevations were rich in radiation-resistant microorganisms, and the main genera were Rubrobacter, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, Pontibacter, and Streptomyces. The findings have shown the composition and distribution of bacterial communities at different elevations on the Eastern Pamir Plateau. Potentially radiation tolerant microbial species were also examined. The results are of considerable importance for the succession of bacterial microorganisms in the plateau region, the study of radiation tolerant bacterial germplasm resources, and the application of biofunctionality. Droughts are one of the main challenges affecting humanity in a global change context. Due to its spatial configuration, Chile experiences droughts of different severities, from arid to humid climates, ranging from sea level to elevations above 6,000 m above sea level (a.s.l.), but it is still unknown how this phenomenon behaves in distribution, duration and intensity. The goal of this study is to identify how droughts have affected the different climate regions of the country between 1979 and 2019. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), calculated for March and September, at the end of the humid season in the north and center-south of the country, respectively, and calculated at 3-, 6-, 9-, 12- and 24-month, allowed to determine the trends of the drought severity in a 5 χ 5 km grid between 1979 and 2019. We found that negative and significant trends, indicating dry conditions, appear mainly in the Andes above 2,000 m a.s.l., where the main water reservoirs are located, affecting all climate types, except Mediterranean ones between 33°S and 38°S. The SPEI indicates general trends towards drier conditions across various elevations and climate types, with more pronounced negative trends in the north and central regions and some positive trends in the south. These trends suggest a significant impact on water availability, and highlight the need for focused policy initiatives to combat drought effects and manage water resources effectively. These findings are of main interest to Chile, one of the world's leading producers of lithium and copper, with both industries requiring substantial amounts of water for extraction and processing, demanding high water availability in a drier territory. Road surface detection plays a pivotal role in the realm of autonomous vehicle navigation. Contemporary methodologies primarily leverage LiDAR for acquiring three-dimensional data and utilize imagery for chromatic information. However, these approaches encounter significant integration challenges, particularly due to the inherently unstructured nature of 3D point clouds. Addressing this, our novel algorithm, specifically tailored for predicting drivable areas, synergistically combines LiDAR point clouds with bidimensional imagery. Initially, it constructs an altitude discrepancy map via LiDAR, capitalizing on the height uniformity characteristic of planar road surfaces. Subsequently, we introduce an innovative and more efficacious attention mechanism, streamlined for image feature extraction. This mechanism employs adaptive weighting coefficients for the amalgamation of the altitude disparity imagery and two-dimensional image features, thereby facilitating road area delineation within a semantic segmentation framework. Empirical evaluations conducted using the KITTI dataset underscore our methodology's superior road surface discernment and extraction precision, substantiating the efficacy of our proposed network architecture and data processing paradigms. Introduction: The ecological stoichiometric ratio of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus is an important index to understand the utilization and distribution of plant nutrients. Method: To explore how leaf carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents, along with the stoichiometric ratio of different life forms of plants, respond to variations in altitude and soil physical and chemical properties, leaves and soil samples were collected from different life forms of plants at different altitudes (1,100~1,700 m) within the Guozigou region of the forest. Subsequently, the contents and ratios of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the leaves, as well as the physicochemical properties of the soil, were determined. Results: The results showed the following: (1) The three life forms of plants in the study area showed that the coefficient of variation of leaf carbon content was the smallest and the distribution was the most stable, while the coefficient of variation of carbon-nitrogen ratio was the largest. (2) Altitude had a significant effect on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of different life form of plants, among which the leaf nitrogen content of trees, shrubs, and herbs increased significantly with altitude (p < 0.01), the leaf phosphorus content of trees increased significantly with altitude (p < 0.01), and the leaf C:N of the three life form of plants decreased significantly with altitude (p < 0.01). The C:P of the arbor decreased significantly with altitude (p < 0.05), and the N:P of shrub and herb leaves increased significantly with altitude (p < 0.01). (3) Soil organic carbon and soil moisture content were the main environmental factors affecting the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in leaves of arbors, and nitrate nitrogen was the main environmental factor affecting the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in leaves of shrubs. Available phosphorus affected the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the leaves of herbaceous plants. Background: High-altitude populations exhibit distinct cellular, respiratory, and cardiovascular phenotypes, some of which provide adaptive advantages to hypoxic conditions compared to populations with sea-level ancestry. Studies performed in populations with a history of high-altitude residence, such as Tibetans, support the idea that many of these phenotypes may be shaped by genomic features that have been positively selected for throughout generations. We hypothesize that such traits observed in Tibetans at high altitude also occur in Tibetans living at intermediate altitude, even in the absence of severe sustained hypoxia. Methodology: We studied individuals of high-altitude ancestry (Tibetans, n = 17 females; n = 12 males) and sea-level ancestry (Han Chinese, n = 6 females; n = 10 males), both who had been living at ~1300m (~4327 ft) for at least 18 months. We measured hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]), hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR), and hypoxic heart rate response (HHRR) with end-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) held constant (isocapnia) or allowed to decrease with hypoxic hyperventilation (poikilocapnia). We also quantified the contribution of CO2 on ventilation and heart rate by calculating the differences of isocapnic versus poikilocapnic hypoxic conditions (Δ &lowbar;VI/ΔPETCO2 and ΔHR/ΔPETCO2, respectively). Results: Male Tibetans had lower [Hb] compared to Han Chinese males (p < 0.05), consistent with reports for individuals from these populations living at high altitude and sea level. Measurements of ventilation (resting ventilation, HVR, and PETCO2) were similar for both groups. Heart rate responses to hypoxia were similar in both groups during isocapnia; however, HHRR in poikilocapnia was reduced in the Tibetan group (p < 0.03), and the heart rate response to CO2 in hypoxia was lower in Tibetans relative to Han Chinese (p < 0.01). Conclusion: These results suggest that Tibetans living at intermediate altitude have blunted cardiac responses in the context of hypoxia. Hence, only some of the phenotypes observed in Tibetans living at high altitude are observed in Tibetans living at intermediate altitude. Whereas blunted cardiac responses to hypoxia is revealed at intermediate altitudes, manifestation of other physiological adaptations to high altitude may require exposure to more severe levels of hypoxia. Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and duration of physical exercise are strongly associated with physical health. Unfortunately, there are few studies focused on the association with psychological symptoms, let alone Tibetan university students at high altitudes in China. Methods: A stratified cluster sampling method was used to include 8,268 Tibetan university students aged 19-22 years in Qinghai and Tibet, both of which are high-altitude regions of China. Self-assessment questionnaires on SSBs, duration of physical exercise, and psychological symptoms were administered. The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the associations among them. Results: The detection rate of psychological symptoms among Tibetan university students in high-altitude areas of China was 16.7%, with in girls (18.2%) higher than that in boys (14.8%), and the difference was statistically significant (2 = 11.73, p < 0.01). The proportion of SSBs for university students =1 time/week, 2-5 times/week, and = 6 times/week were 54.2, 24.3, and 21.5%, respectively. The proportion of duration of physical exercise for >60 min/d was only 5.4%. Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with the SSBs =1 time/week group of university students, SSBs 2-5 times/week (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.24-1.70) and = 6 times/week (OR = 3.06, 95% CI: 2.62-3.57) had an increased risk of psychological symptoms (p < 0.001). In the reference group, the risk of psychological symptoms was also significantly increased in the group of university students with duration of physical exercise >60 min/d (OR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.48-2.93), and the risk of psychological symptoms was also significantly increased in the group with duration of physical exercise <30 min/d (OR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.48-2.93). The risk of psychological symptoms was also significantly increased in the university students with the duration of physical exercise <30 min/d (OR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.48 ~ 2.93) group. Conclusion: SSBs and exercise time may be important influences on the psychological symptoms of Tibetan university students at high altitudes in China. This study has important implications for mental health planning in universities in highland areas and may also provide guidance for mental health interventions for Tibetan university students. Introduction: Extreme environments such as prolonged high temperatures and droughts can cause vulnerability of vegetation ecosystems. The dry-hot valleys of Southwestern China, known for their extremely high annual temperature, lack of water, and unique non-zonal "hot island" habitat in the global temperate zone, provide exceptional sites for studying how plant adapts to the prolonged dry and hot environment. However, the specific local biotic-environment relationships in these regions remain incompletely elucidated. The study aims to evaluate how valley-type Savanna vegetation species and their communities adapt to longterm drought and high-temperature stress environments. Methods: The study investigated the changes in species diversity and communities' aboveground biomass of a valley-type Savanna vegetation along an elevation gradient of Yuanmou dry-hot valley in Jinsha River basin, southwest China. Subsequently, a general linear model was utilized to simulate the distribution pattern of species diversities and their constituent biomass along the elevation gradient. Finally, the RDA and VPH mothed were used to evaluate the impacts and contributions of environmental factors or variables on the patterns. Results and discussion: The field survey reveals an altitudinal gradient effect on the valley-type Savanna, with a dominant species of shrubs and herbs plants distribution below an elevation of 1700m, and a significant positive relationship between the SR, Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, and Pielou indices and altitudes. Relatively, the community aboveground biomass did not increase significantly with elevation, which was mainly due to a decreased biomass of herbaceous plants along the elevation. Different regulators of shrub-herbaceous plant species and their functional groups made different elevation patterns of species diversity and aboveground biomass in valley-type Savannas. Herbaceous plants are responsible formaintaining species diversity and ensuring stability in the aboveground biomass of the vegetation. However, the influence of shrubs on aboveground biomass became more pronounced as environmental conditions varied along the altitudinal gradient. Furthermore, species diversity was mainly influenced by soil and climatic environmental factors, whereas community biomass wasmainly regulated by plant species or functional groups. The study demonstrates that the spatial pattern of valley-type Savanna was formed as a result of different environmental responses and the productive capacity of retained plant species or functional groups to climate-soil factors, highlighting the value of the Yuanmou dry-hot Valley as a microcosm for exploring the intricate interactions between vegetation evolution and changes in environmental factors. Background: Research on the association between sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms has been highly emphasized. However, past studies have focused on college students in plains areas, while fewer research studies have been conducted on Tibetan college students at high altitudes. Whether this association changes due to ethnicity or altitude is unclear. The present study will contribute to the prevention and intervention of depressive symptoms among Tibetan college students at high altitude. Methods: A self-assessment questionnaire was administered to 3,026 university students (1,491 boys students, 49.27%) on SSBs consumption, sleep quality and anxiety symptoms status in the Tibetan Plateau, a high-altitude region of China. Logistic regression analysis and ordered logistic regression analysis in generalized linear model were used to analyze the association between SSBs consumption and sleep quality with anxiety symptoms. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms among Tibetan college students at high altitude was 26.9%. SSBs consumption of =1 times/week, 2-5 times/week, and = 6 times/week were 20.7, 28.1, and 45.7%, respectively, with statistically significant differences (2 value of 134.353, p < 0.001). Anxiety detection rates for Sleep quality of Good (PSQI =5), Moderate (PSQI 6-7), and Poor (PSQI >7) were 16.8, 19.8, and 32.0%, respectively, and the difference was also statistically significant (2 value was 73.761, p < 0.001). The ordered logistic regression analysis in the generalized linear model showed that, overall, the group of college students with SSBs =1 times/week and sleep quality of Good served as the reference group, and the group with SSBs =6 times/week and sleep quality of Poor (OR: 5.06, 95% CI: 3.75-6.83) had the highest risk of anxiety symptoms. Conclusion: SSBs consumption and sleep quality were associated with anxiety symptoms, and there was an interaction effect. Rubus ellipticus Smith is an evergreen shrub in the Rosaceae family, commonly known as yellow Himalayan raspberry. The objective of this study is to determine the morphological analysis, minerals, proximate, ascorbic acid, anthocyanins, and carotenoids content in R. ellipticus fruits. The fruit samples were collected from four different sites with different altitudes [500 m (District Bilaspur), 1,000 m (District Hamirpur), 1,500 m (District Solan) and 2,000 m (District Shimla)] of Himachal Pradesh for the two consecutive years (2018 and 2019). The fruit morphological investigation revealed that the maximum length (7.71 ± 0.08 mm), width (8.71 ± 0.03 mm), and weight (0.80 ± 0.01 g) of fruits is achieved at higher altitudes (2,000 m) in the year 2018 as compared to 2019. The mineral content (0.05–36.6 mg/g DW), ascorbic acid content (14.59–23.64 mg/g DW), proteins (95.20–131 mg/g DW), and crude fibers (5.6–11.5%) were also higher in fruits grown at 2,000 m altitude, whereas carbohydrates (210–398 mg/g DW), crude fat (2.4–4.1%), and anthocyanins (0.42–1.35 mg/100 g FW) contents were higher in fruits collected from 500 m altitude. According to the results, R. ellipticus fruits were rich in crude fiber, moisture, carbohydrates, protein, ash, and crude fat, as well as in micronutrients, and displayed significant variation with altitude in nutrient content. This could be due to the different environmental, geographical, and weather conditions. The high nutrient content of R. ellipticus suggests its future potential applications for the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Background: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) increases significantly at high altitudes, and is associated with the presence and severity of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Exposure to hypobaria, hypoxia, and coldness when hiking also impacts intraocular pressure (IOP). To date, little is known about ocular physiological responses in trekkers with myopia at high altitudes. This study aimed to determine changes in the ONSD and IOP between participants with and without high myopia (HM) during hiking and to test whether these changes could predict symptoms of AMS. Methods: Nine participants with HM and 18 without HM participated in a 3-day trek of Xue Mountain. The ONSD, IOP, and questionnaires were examined before and during the trek of Xue Mountain. Results: The ONSD values increased significantly in bothHM(p = 0.005) and non-HMtrekkers (p = 0.018) at an altitude of 1,700 m. In theHMgroup, IOP levels were greater than those in the non-HM group (p = 0.034) on the first day of trekking (altitude: 3,150 m). No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups for the values of ONSD. Fractional changes in ONSD at an altitude of 1,700m were related to the development of AMS (rpb = 0.448, p = 0.019) and the presence of headache symptoms (rpb = 0.542, p = 0.004). The area under the ROC curve for the diagnostic performance of ONSD fractional changes at an altitude of 1,700m was 0.859 for predicting the development of AMS and 0.803 for predicting the presence of headache symptoms. Conclusion: Analysis of changes in ONSD at moderate altitude could predict AMS symptoms before an ascent to high altitude. Myopia may impact physiological accommodation at high altitudes, and HM trekkers potentially demonstrate suboptimal regulation of aqueous humor in such environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are expectations that increasing temperatures will-lead to significant changes in structure and function of montane meadows, including greater water stress on vegetation and lowered vegetation production and productivity. We evaluated spatio-temporal dynamics in production and productivity in meadows within the Sierra Nevada mountain range of North America by: (1) compiling Landsat satellite data for the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) across a 37-year period (1985-2021) for 8,095 meadows >2,500m elevation; then, (2) used state-space models, changepoint analysis, geographically-weighted regression (GWR), and distance-decay analysis (DDA) to: (a) identify meadows with decreasing, increasing or no trends for NDVI; (b) detect meadows with abrupt changes (changepoints) in NDVI; and (c) evaluate variation along gradients of latitude, longitude, and elevation for eight indices of temporal dynamics in annual production (mean growing season NDVI; MGS) and productivity (rate of spring greenup; RSP). Meadows with no long-term change or evidence of increasing NDVI were 2.6x more frequent as those with decreasing NDVI (72% vs. 28%). Abrupt changes in NDVI were detected in 48% of the meadows; they occurred in every year of the study and with no indication that their frequency had changed over time. The intermixing of meadows with different temporal dynamics was a consistent pattern for monthly NDVI and, especially, the eight annual indices of MGS and RSP. The DDA showed temporal dynamics in pairs of meadow within a few 100m of each other were often as different as those hundreds of kilometers apart. Our findings point strongly toward a great diversity of temporal dynamics in meadow production and productivity in the SNV. The heterogeneity in spatial patterns indicated that production and productivity of meadow vegetation is being driven by interplay among climatic, physiographic and biotic factors at basin and meadow scales. Thus, when evaluating spatio-temporal dynamics in condition for many high elevation meadow systems, what might often be considered "noise" may provide greater insight than a "signal" embedded within a large amount of variability. This article presents a novel target tracking algorithm for hyperspectral low altitude UAV, combining deep learning with an improved Kernelized Correlation Filter (KCF). Initially, an image noise reduction method based on principal component analysis with Block-Matching 3D (BM3D), is employed to process redundant information. Subsequently, an image fusion method is utilized to merge the processed hyperspectral image and the high-resolution panchromatic band image to obtain a high spatial resolution image for target enhancement. Following this, YOLOv5 is used to detect the coordinate information of the UAV target in the current frame. Then, The KCF algorithm is used for target tracking in the current frame using kernel correlation filtering. Finally, the Discriminative Scale Spatial Tracker (DSST) is employed to determine the scale information to achieve a multi-scale tracking effect. The diversity of flower colours in nature provides quantifiable evidence for how visitations by colour sensing insect pollinators can drive the evolution of angiosperm visual signalling. Recent research shows that both biotic and abiotic factors may influence flower signalling, and that harsher climate conditions may also promote salient signalling to entice scarcer pollinators to visit. In parallel, a more sophisticated appreciation of the visual task foragers face reveals that bees have a complex visual system that uses achromatic vision when moving fast, whilst colour vision requires slower, more careful inspection of targets. Spectra of 714 native flowering species across Taiwan from sea level to mountainous regions 3,300 m above sea level (a.s.l.) were measured. We modelled how the visual system of key bee pollinators process signals, including flower size. By using phylogenetically informed analyses, we observed that at lower altitudes including foothills and submontane landscapes, there is a significant relationship between colour contrast and achromatic signals. Overall, the frequency of flowers with high colour contrast increases with altitude, whilst flower size decreases. The evidence that flower colour signaling becomes increasingly salient in higher altitude conditions supports that abiotic factors influence pollinator foraging in a way that directly influences how flowering plants need to advertise. Previous studies on the cardiac data of healthy permanent residents living in highaltitude regions such as Tibet and the Andes have yielded inconsistent findings and significant disparities. These discrepancies can be mainly attributed to the invasive methods conventionally used for parameter evaluation. However, with the introduction of cutting-edge ultrasound technology, there is now an innovative approach to addressing and reconciling these variations. In this pilot study, we employed an ultrasound-based cardiac output monitoring (USCOM) device to evaluate cardiac output and related hemodynamic variables in a group of 20 healthy high-altitude Andean residents (comprising 10 men and 10 women) aged between 26 and 35 years old. The monocentric study was carried out in La Paz, Bolivia, located between at an altitude of 3,600-4,000 m. A total of 60 hemodynamic measurements were evaluated, accounting for three technical replicates per subject. Our results showed strong intrasubject reproducibility and revealed important differences related to both sex and hemodynamic parameters in highlanders compared to individuals residing at sea level. We conclude that USCOM represents a highly reliable technology for performing hemodynamic measurements in high-altitude residents. Our preliminary findings underscore the need for larger studies, encompassing larger sample sizes, specifically tailored to gender considerations, and extendable to broader highland populations. These findings have special significant implications for the management of hemodynamics in intensive care and postoperative settings, warranting further comprehensive research efforts. Introduction: The diversity of freshwater fishes is threatened by multiple environmental stressors, including climate change, alterations in land use, and introduction of non-native species. However, the quantification of temporal biodiversity in freshwater communities is limited. Here, we asked: i) how has alpha (species richness), beta (changes in freshwater species composition), and gamma diversity (total species diversity in a landscape) changed over time for lakes over a 50 year period?; and ii) What are the climatic, land use, and lake morphological drivers associated with higher diversity? Methods: We assembled a database of fish species occurrence from 20 lakes across subalpine and alpine regions in Alberta from 1970-2019, in addition to lake morphological, climatic, and land use characteristics of the watersheds. Results: We observed an overall increase in alpha, beta, and gamma diversity from the 1970s to 2009s. However, all measures of diversity declined from 2010-2019. We found that more lakes and species assemblages were influenced by species gains, rather than species losses (with the exception of the last decade of sampling). Discussion: Generally, we found that coolwater species were expanding and coldwater fishes were being lost throughout our study lakes. Background: Hypoxia and old age impair postural control and may therefore enhance the risk of accidents. We investigated whether acetazolamide, the recommended drug for prevention of acute mountain sickness, may prevent altitude-induced deterioration of postural control in older persons. Methods: In this parallel-design trial, 95 healthy volunteers, 40 years of age or older, living <1,000 m, were randomized to preventive therapy with acetazolamide (375 mg/d) or placebo starting 24 h before and during a 2-day sojourn at 3,100 m. Instability of postural control was quantified by a balance platform with the center of pressure path length (COPL) as primary outcome while pulse oximetry (SpO2) was monitored. Effects of altitude and treatment on COPL were evaluated by ordered logistic regression. www.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03536429. Results: In participants taking placebo, ascent from 760 m to 3,100 m increased median COPL from 25.8 cm to 27.6 cm (odds ratio 3.80, 95%CI 2.53-5.70) and decreased SpO2 from 96% to 91% (odds ratio 0.0003, 95%CI 0.0002-0.0007); in participants taking acetazolamide, altitude ascent increased COPL from 24.6 cm to 27.3 cm (odds ratio 2.22, 95%CI 1.57-3.13), while SpO2 decreased from 96% to 93% (odds ratio 0.007, 95%CI 0.004-0.012). Altitude-induced increases in COPL were smaller with acetazolamide vs. placebo (odds ratio 0.58, 95%CI 0.34-0.99) while drops in SpO2 were mitigated (odds ratio 19.2, 95%CI 9.9-37.6). Conclusion: In healthy individuals, 40 years of age or older, postural control was impaired after spending a night at 3,100 m. Accurate estimates of glacier surface elevation changes are paramount for various aspects of the study of the cryosphere, from glacier flow and thickness estimates to hydrological forecasts and projections of sea-level-rise. We present a novel probabilistic framework to filter outliers and estimate uncertainties in glacier surface elevation changes computed from the subtraction of digital elevation models (DEM). Our methodology frames outlier filtering as a Bayesian inference problem, thus characterizing the state of knowledge on glacier surface elevation changes through the posterior distribution as the combination of glacier volume variation observations and prior knowledge arising from previously collected data and/or modeled results. We validate this technique with experiments using Gaussian random fields to generate artificial noise in glacier surface elevation variation observations and show that the model satisfactorily culls the simulated outliers. Surface elevation change estimates are consistent with results computed from widely-used outlier filtering and uncertainty estimation techniques. The Bayesian framework allows unifying DEM error models with physical considerations on glacier surface elevation changes within a simple, statistically coherent model preventing temporal correlation and additional biases in other techniques. Introduction: High altitude exposure may lead to high altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). The pathophysiologic processes of both entities have been linked to decreased nitric oxide (NO) availability. Methods: We studied the effect of acute high altitude exposure on the plasma concentrations of asymmetric (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), L-arginine, L-ornithine, and L-citrulline in two independent studies. We further investigated whether these biomarkers involved inNOmetabolism were related to HAPH and HAPE, respectively. Fifty (study A) and thirteen (study B) nonacclimatized lowlanders were exposed to 4,559 m for 44 and 67 h, respectively. In contrast to study A, the participants in study B were characterized by a history of at least one episode of HAPE. Arterial blood gases and biomarker concentrations in venous plasma were assessed at low altitude (baseline) and repeatedly at high altitude. HAPE was diagnosed by chest radiography, and HAPH by measuring right ventricular to atrial pressure gradient (RVPG) with transthoracic echocardiography. AMS was evaluated with the Lake Louise Score (LLS) and the AMS-C score. Results: In both studies SDMA concentration significantly increased at high altitude. ADMA baseline concentrations were higher in individuals with HAPE susceptibility (study B) compared to those without (study A). However, upon high altitude exposure ADMA only increased in individuals without HAPE susceptibility, while there was no further increase in those with HAPE susceptibility. We observed an acute and transient decrease of L-ornithine and a more delayed but prolonged reduction of L-citrulline during high altitude exposure. In both studies SDMA positively correlated and L-ornithine negatively correlated with RVPG. ADMA was significantly associated with the occurrence of HAPE (study B). ADMA and SDMA were inversely correlated with alveolar PO2, while L-ornithine was inversely correlated with blood oxygenation and haemoglobin levels, respectively. Discussion: In non-acclimatized individuals ADMA and SDMA, two biomarkers decreasing endothelial NO production, increased after acute exposure to 4,559 m. Ephedra is an important plant in Chinese medicine; however, there are few reports on two species of Ephedra which are distributed at high altitudes from 3000 to 5200 meters. We collected a total of 84 individuals representing five Ephedra gerardiana and nine Ephedra saxatilis populations respectively located from 3158 to 5200 meters altitude, and determined the relative content of 213 metabolites using UHPLC-MS/MS (Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry). 37 Chemical compositions were annotated using the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes) database. From the top five significant enrichments in metabolic KEGG pathway analysis, we found a total of 166 compounds belonging to phenylpropanoids, 123 flavonoids, 67 metabolites carried by ABC transporters, and 61 in purine metabolism. We identified the top 8 altitude-related compounds in two species. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine were found to be associated with altitude in both E. saxatilis and E. gerardiana. To verify which environmental factors influenced the metabolic content, the soil moisture and temperature of each population site were collected, and quantitative analysis of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine was performed using UHPLC-MS (Ultra-High-Performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry). After detection, soil moisture ranged from 0.074 to 0.177 mm³/mm³, and temperature ranged from 9.7°C to 23.9°C. The content of ephedrine ranged from (0.84 ± 0.49)% to (2.01 ± 0.41)% in E. saxatilis, which was positively correlated with soil moisture; the content of pseudoephedrine ranged from (0.72 ± 0.45)% to (1.11 ± 0.57)% and was negatively correlated with soil moisture. In contrast to these results, in E. gerardiana, the content of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine was negatively correlated with soil moisture. Furthermore, the trends of alkaloid contents in two kinds of Ephedra were similar when the temperature was lower than 17°C even if the sum was various. With the increase in soil moisture and temperature, the total alkaloid content of E. saxatilis was higher than that of E. gerardiana. When the soil moisture was lower, the alkaloid content of the two Ephedra species was higher. These results provide useful data for the future separation of new compounds, and for seed homogeneous growth to determine artificial breeding of Ephedra located at high altitudes. Objective: To determine changes in protein expression related to brain aging and imaging features in mice after chronic hypoxia exposure at high altitude. Method: A total of 24 healthy 4-week-old mice were randomly divided into high altitude hypoxia (HH) and plain control (PC) groups (n = 8 per group). HH mice were transported from Xi’an (450 m above sea level) to Maduo (4,300 m above sea level) while PC mice were raised in Xi’an. After 6 months, 7.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. All mice completed T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI), arterial spin labeling (ASL), and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) examinations. Next, brain slices were prepared and Nissl staining was used to observe morphological changes in neurons. Ultrastructural changes in neurons were observed by transmission electron microscopy. Expression changes of Caspase-3, klotho, P16, P21, and P53 at the gene and protein levels were detected by real-time PCR (RT- PCR) and Western blot. Results: The number of neuronal Nissl bodies in the hippocampus and frontal cortex was significantly decreased in the HH group compared to the PC group. Some hippocampal and frontal cortical neurons were apoptotic, the nuclei were wrinkled, chromatin was aggregated, and most mitochondria were mildly swollen (crista lysis, fracture). Compared with the PC group, the HH group showed elevated expression of caspase-3 mRNA, P16 mRNA, P21 mRNA, and P53 mRNA in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. Expression of Klotho mRNA in the frontal cortex was also significantly decreased. Western blot results showed that caspase-3 protein expression in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of the HH group was increased compared with the PC group. Moreover, there was decreased Klotho protein expression and significantly increased P-P53 protein expression. Compared with the PC group, expression of P16 protein in the frontal cortex of the HH group was increased and the gray matter (GM) volume in the left visceral area, left caudate nucleus, and left piriform cortex was decreased. Furthermore, the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation was decreased in the left posterior nongranular insular lobe, right small cell reticular nucleus, left flocculus, left accessory flocculus, and left primary auditory area, but increased in the GM layer of the left superior colliculus. Regional homogeneity was decreased in the left and right olfactory regions, but increased in the left bed nucleus. After exposure to high altitude, functional connectivity (FC) between the bilateral caudate nucleus and thalamus, corpus callosum, cingulate gyrus, anterior limbic cortex, globus pallidus, and hippocampus was weakened. FC between the right caudate nucleus and hypothalamus and entorhinal cortex was also weakened. The fractional anisotropy value of the left hippocampus was decreased in the HH group. Compared with the PC group, the HH group showed significantly increased inner diameters of the bilateral common carotid artery and left internal carotid artery. The cerebral blood flow values of the bilateral cortex and bilateral hippocampus in the HH group did not change significantly. Conclusion: Taken together, our findings show that chronic hypoxia exposure at high altitude may promote neuronal apoptosis and abnormal expression of related proteins, changing the structure and function of brain. Background: Ascending to high altitude can induce a range of physiological and molecular alterations, rendering a proportion of lowlanders unacclimatized. The prediction of acute mountain sickness (AMS) prior to ascent to high altitude remains elusive. Methods: A total of 40 participants were enrolled for our study in the discovery cohort, and plasma samples were collected from all individuals. The subjects were divided into severe AMS-susceptible (sAMS) group, moderate AMSsusceptible (mAMS) group and non-AMS group based on the Lake Louise Score (LLS) at both 5000m and 3700m. Proteomic analysis was conducted on a cohort of 40 individuals to elucidate differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and associated pathways between AMS-susceptible group and AMS-resistant group at low altitude (1400m) and middle high-altitude (3700m). Subsequently, a validation cohort consisting of 118 individuals was enrolled. The plasma concentration of selected DEPs were quantified using ELISA. Comparative analyses of DEPs among different groups in validation cohort were performed, followed by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis to evaluate the predictive efficiency of DEPs for the occurrence of AMS. Results: The occurrence of the AMS symptoms and LLS differed significantly among the three groups in the discovery cohort (p<0.05), as well as in the validation cohort. Comparison of plasma protein profiles using GO analysis revealed that DEPs were primarily enriched in granulocyte activation, neutrophil mediated immunity, and humoral immune response. The comparison of potential biomarkers between the sAMS group and non-AMS group at low altitude revealed statistically higher levels of AAT, SAP and LTF in sAMS group (p=0.01), with a combined area under the curve(AUC) of 0.965. Compared to the mAMS group at low altitude, both SAP and LTF were found to be significantly elevated in the sAMS group, with a combined AUC of 0.887. HSP90-a and SAP exhibited statistically higher levels in the mAMS group compared to the non-AMS group at low altitude, with a combined AUC of 0.874. Conclusion: Inflammatory and immune related biological processes were significantly different between AMS-susceptible and AMS-resistant groups at low altitude and middle high-altitude. Little is known about the acute and subacute cardiopulmonary acclimatization to high altitude in middle-aged asthmatics without other comorbidities. Methods: In this prospective study in lowlander subjects with mostly mild asthma who revealed an asthma control questionnaire score >0.75 and participated in a three-week rehabilitation program, we assessed systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP), cardiac function, and extravascular lung water (EVLW) at 760 m (baseline) by Doppler-echocardiography and on the second (acute) and last day (subacute) at a high altitude clinic in Kyrgyzstan (3100 m). Results: The study included 22 patients (eight male) with a mean age of 44.3 ± 12.4 years, body mass index of 25.8 ± 4.7 kg/m², a forced expiratory volume in 1 s of 92% ± 19% predicted (post-bronchodilator), and partially uncontrolled asthma. sPAP increased from 21.8 mmHg by mean difference by 7.5 [95% confidence interval 3.9 to 10.5] mmHg (p < 0.001) during acute exposure and by 4.8 [1.0 to 8.6] mmHg (p = 0.014) during subacute exposure. The right-ventricular-to-pulmonary-artery coupling expressed by TAPSE/sPAP decreased from 1.1 by -0.2 [-0.3 to -0.1] mm/mmHg (p < 0.001) during acute exposure and by -0.2 [-0.3 to -0.1] mm/mmHg (p = 0.002) during subacute exposure, accordingly. EVLW significantly increased from baseline (1.3 ± 1.8) to acute hypoxia (5.5 ± 3.5, p < 0.001) but showed no difference after 3 weeks (2.0 ± 1.8). Conclusion: In otherwise healthy asthmatics, acute exposure to hypoxia at high altitude increases pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and EVLW. Intestinal microorganisms assist the host in digesting complex and difficultly decomposed foods; expand the host’s dietary ecological niche. In order to investigate the effect of high-fiber food on intestinal microorganisms of Eothenomys miletus at different altitudes, exploring the regional differences of intestinal microorganisms and their roles in body mass regulation, we collected E. miletus from Dali (DL) and Xianggelila (XGLL), which were divided into control group, high-fiber group fed with high-fiber diet for 7 days, and refeeding group fed with standard diet for 14 days after high-fiber diet. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology combined with physiological methods, we analyzed the gut microbial diversity, abundance, community structure and related physiological indicators of each group, and explored the effects of high-fiber foods and regions on the diversity, structure of gut microorganisms and physiological indicators. The results showed that high-fiber food affected the food intake and metabolic rate of E. miletus, which also showed regional differences. The intestinal microorganisms of E. miletus obtained energy through the enrichment of fiber degrading bacteria under the condition of high-fiber food, while producing short-chain fatty acids, which participated in processes such as energy metabolism or immune regulation. Moreover, it also affected the colonization of intestinal microorganisms. High-fiber food promoted the enrichment of probiotics in the intestinal microbiota of E. miletus, but pathogenic bacteria also appeared. Therefore, the changes in the composition and diversity of gut microbiota in E. miletus provided important guarantees for their adaptation to high fiber food environments in winter. Psychosis is a psychopathological syndrome that can be triggered or caused by exposure to high altitude (HA). Psychosis can occur alone as isolated HA psychosis or can be associated with other mental and often also somatic symptoms as a feature of delirium. Psychosis can also occur as a symptom of high altitude cerebral edema (HACE), a life-threatening condition. It is unclear how psychotic symptoms at HA should be classified into existing diagnostic categories of the most widely used classification systems of mental disorders, including the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11). We provide a diagnostic framework for classifying symptoms using the existing diagnostic categories: psychotic condition due to a general medical condition, brief psychotic disorder, delirium, and HACE. We also discuss the potential classification of isolated HA psychosis into those categories. A valid and reproducible classification of symptoms is essential for communication among professionals, ensuring that patients receive optimal treatment, planning further trips to HA for individuals who have experienced psychosis at HA, and advancing research in the field. The primary objective of this investigation was to study the effect of altitude on fish swimming ability. Different species were tested to ensure that the differences observed are not associated with a single species. Fish critical swimming speed and burst speed were determined using stepped-velocity tests in a Brett-type swimming respirometer. Based on the effects of water temperature and dissolved oxygen, it is clear that the swimming ability of fish decreases as altitude increases. Further, because the effects of high altitude on fish physiology go beyond the effects of lower temperature and dissolved oxygen, we recommend that fish swimming ability be tested at an altitude similar to the target fishway site to ensure the validity of fish data used for fishway design. Foliage leaves are the primary photosynthetic organ of the majority of vascular plants, and their area vs. biomass scaling relationships provide valuable insights into the capacity and investment in light interception, which is critical to plant growth and performance. The "diminishing returns" hypothesis (DRH), which is based primarily on data from gymnosperms and angiosperms, posits that leaf (lamina) area scales with leaf dry mass. on average with a scaling exponent less than 1.0. However, it remains uncertain whether DRH applies to ferns or whether ecological factors affect the scaling exponents governing fern leaf morphometrics. To address this issue, 182 individuals of 28 subtropical ferns species were studied at low, medium, and high elevations (i.e., 600 m, 900 m, and 1200 m, respectively) in Mount Wuyi National Park, Jiangxi Province, China. The scaling relationships between leaf area and leaf biomass for individual and total leaf of ferns at different elevations were examined by using standardized major axis regression protocols. Analyses of the 28 fern species (using Blomberg K-value protocols) indicated no phylogenetic biases among the species compositions of the three different elevations. In addition, at the individual plant level, individual leaf area (ILA) did not differ significantly among the three different elevations (P > 0.05). However, individual leaf mass (ILM) was significantly higher at 900m than at 1200m (P < 0.05), resulting in a significantly higher leaf mass per area (LMA) at the 900m elevation than at the 600m and 1200m elevations (P < 0.05). The ILA and ILM at the 900m elevation were significantly higher than at the 600m elevation (P < 0.05). At the species level, ILA and ILM did not differ significantly among the three elevations (P > 0.05). The total leaf area per individual (TLA) did not differ significantly across the different elevations (P > 0.05). However, total leaf mass per individual (TLM) did differ significantly (P < 0.05). At the individual plant level, the scaling exponents for ILA vs. ILM and TLA vs. TLM at the three different elevations were all significantly less than 1.0 (P < 0.05), which was consistent with the DRH. At the species level, the scaling exponents for the ILA vs. ILM were significantly less than 1.0 at the middle and high elevations, but not at the low elevation. The scaling exponents of the TLA and TLM were numerically highest in the middle elevation, and all were less than 1.0 for the three elevations. These results indicate that the scaling relationships of leaf area versus mass of subtropical ferns at different elevations support the DRH hypothesis. Purpose: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies of brain MRI, this paper assesses the effects of long-term exposure to high-altitude on brain structures in healthy people. Methods: Observational studies related to high-altitude, brain and MRI were systematically searched based on data retrieved from PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library. The timescale for collecting literature was from the establishment of the databases to 2023. NoteExpress 3.2 was used to manage the literature. Two investigators performed literature screening and data extraction based on inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, and literature quality. The quality of the literature was assessed using the NOS Scale. Finally, meta-analysis of included studies was performed using Reviewer Manager 5.3. Results: Initially, 3,626 articles were retrieved. After screening, 16 articles (n = 756 participants) were included in the systematic review, and meta-analysis was performed on 6 articles (n = 350 participants). The overall quality of the included articles was at medium level, with a mean NOS score of 5.62. The results of meta- analysis showed that the differences between the HA group and LA group were not statistically significant, in total GM volume (MD: -0.60, 95% CI: -16.78 to 15.58, P = 0.94), WM volume (MD: 3.05, 95% CI: -15.72 to 21.81, P = 0.75) and CSF volume (MD: 5.00, 95% CI: -11.10 to 21.09, P = 0.54). The differences between HA and LA in FA values of frontotemporal lobes were not statistically significant: right frontal lobe (MD: -0.02, 95% CI: -0.07 to 0.03, P = 0.38), left frontal lobe (MD: 0.01, 95% CI: -0.02 to 0.04, P = 0.65), right temporal lobe (MD: -0.00, 95% CI: -0.03 to 0.02, P = 0.78) and left temporal lobe (MD: -0.01, 95% CI: -0.04 to 0.02, P = 0.62). However, there were significant differences in GM volume, GM density and FA values in local brain regions between HA group and LA group. Conclusion: Compared with LA area, there were no significant differences in total GM, WM and CSF volumes in healthy people living at high-altitude area for long-term, while there were significant differences in GM volume and FA values in local brain regions. Long-term exposure to high-altitude area caused the adaptive structural changes in local brain regions. Diversity patterns and community assembly of soil microorganisms are essential for understanding soil biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Investigating the impacts of environmental factors on microbial community assembly is crucial for comprehending the functions of microbial biodiversity and ecosystem processes. However, these issues remain insufficiently investigated in related studies despite their fundamental significance. The present study aimed to assess the diversity and assembly of soil bacterial and fungal communities to altitude and soil depth variations in mountain ecosystems by using 16S and ITS rRNA gene sequence analyses. In addition, the major roles of environmental factors in determining soil microbial communities and assembly processes were further investigated. The results showed a U-shaped pattern of the soil bacterial diversity at 0-10 cm soil depth along altitudes, reaching a minimum value at 1800 m, while the fungal diversity exhibited a monotonically decreasing trend with increasing altitude. At 10-20 cm soil depth, the soil bacterial diversity showed no apparent changes along altitudinal gradients, while the fungal Chao1 and phylogenetic diversity (PD) indices exhibited hump-shaped patterns with increasing altitude, reaching a maximum value at 1200 m. Soil bacterial and fungal communities were distinctively distributed with altitude at the same depth of soil, and the spatial turnover rates in fungi was greater than in bacteria. Mantel tests suggested soil physiochemical and climate variables significantly correlated with the β diversity of microbial community at two soil depths, suggesting both soil and climate heterogeneity contributed to the variation of bacterial and fungal community. Correspondingly, a novel phylogenetic null model analysis demonstrated that the community assembly of soil bacterial and fungal communities were dominated by deterministic and stochastic processes, respectively. The assembly processes of bacterial community were significantly related to the soil DOC and C:N ratio, while the fungal community assembly processes were significantly related to the soil C:N ratio. Introduction: Fine roots are the critical functional organs of plants to absorb water and nutrients from the soil environment, while the relation between fine root morphological characteristics and yield & quality has received less attention for medicinal plants. Methods: Therefore, we investigated the relationship between fine root morphological characteristics and biomass & gypenosides content. We explored the primary environmental drivers of fine root indicators for Gynostemma longipes from three provenances cultivated at two altitude habitats. Results: At the end of the growing season, compared with the low-altitude habitat, the underground biomass of G. longipes in the high-altitude habitat increased significantly by 200%~290% for all three provenances. The response of gypenosides content to different altitude habitats varied with provenance and plant organs. The biomass of G. longipes strongly depended on the fine root characteristic indicators (P < 0.001), fine root length density, and fine root surface area. Our results also showed that the harvest yield of G. longipes could be effectively increased by promoting the growth of fine roots per unit leaf weight (P < 0.001, R² = 0.63). Both fine root length density and fine root surface area had strong positive correlations with soil nutrient factors (R² > 0.55) and a strong negative correlation with soil pH (R² > 0.48). In a word, the growth of G. longipes is strongly controlled by the fine root morphological characteristics through the response of fine roots to soil nutrient factors and pH. Discussion: Our findings will help to deepen the understanding of the root ecophysiological basis driven by soil factors for the growth and secondary metabolites formation of G. longipes and other medicinal plants under changing habitat conditions. In future research, we should investigate how environmental factors drive plant morphological characteristics (e.g., fine roots) to affect the growth & quality of medicinal plants over a longer time scale. Although the mountains in South-West Asia are a global biodiversity hotspot, our understanding of their biodiversity, especially in the commonly remote alpine and subnival zones, is still limited. This is well exemplified here by Aethionema umbellatum (Brassicaceae), a species considered to have a wide yet disjoint distribution in the Zagros and Yazd-Kerman mountains of western and central Iran. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic data (based on plastid trnL-trnF and nuclear ITS sequences) show that A. umbellatum is restricted to a single mountain range in southwestern Iran (Dena Mts., southern Zagros), whereas populations from central Iran (Yazd-Kerman and central Zagros) and from western Iran (central Zagros) belong to species new to science, A. alpinum and A. zagricum, respectively. Both new species are phylogenetically and morphologically close to A. umbellatum, with which they share unilocular fruits and one-seeded locules. However, they are easily distinguishable by leaf shape, petal size, and fruit characters. This study confirms that the alpine flora of the Irano-Anatolian region is still poorly known. Soil fungi are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems and play a major role in soil biogeochemical cycling. Although the diversity and composition of fungal communities are regulated by many abiotic and biotic factors, the effect of elevation on soil fungal community diversity and composition remains largely unknown. In this study, the soil fungal composition and diversity in Deyeuxia angustifolia populations along an elevational gradient (1,690 m to 2020 m a.s.l.) were assessed, using Illumina MiSeq sequencing, on the north-facing slope of the Changbai Mountain, northeastern China. Our results showed that soil physicochemical parameters changed significantly along with the elevational gradients. The Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most dominant phyla along with the gradient. Alpha diversity of soil fungi decreased significantly with elevation. Soil nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N) was positively correlated with fungal richness and phylogenetic diversity (PD), indicating that soil nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N) is a key soil property determining fungal community diversity. In addition to soil nitrate content, soil pH and soil moisture were the most important environmental properties determining the soil fungal diversity. Our results suggest that the elevational changes in soil physicochemical properties play a key role in shaping the community composition and diversity of soil fungi. Because of its distinct geological history, frigid temperature, and rich biodiversity, the Tibetan Plateau gives an excellent opportunity to assess the effect of climate change on determining species richness. The distribution patterns of fern species richness and their underlying processes have long been a matter of debate in ecology research, with various hypotheses suggested over the years. Here, we explore richness patterns of fern species in Xizang on the southern and western Tibetan Plateau along an elevational gradient (100-5300 m a.s.l.) and evaluate climatic factors causing the spatial decrease and increase of fern species richness. We used regression and correlation analyses to relate the species richness with elevation and climatic variables. Throughout our research, we identified 441 fern species from 97 genera and 30 families. The Dryopteridaceae family (S = 97) has the highest number of species. All energy-temperature and moisture variables except drought index (DI) had a significant correlation with elevation. The altitude has a unimodal relationship with fern species, and the species richness is the largest at an altitude of 2500 m. The horizontal richness pattern of fern species on the Tibetan Plateau also showed that areas of extremely high species richness are mainly distributed in Zayü and Medog County, with an average elevation of 2800 m and 2500 m, respectively. The richness of fern species has a log-linear relationship with moisture-related factors such as moisture index (MI), mean annual precipitation (MAP), and drought index (DI). Because the peak corresponds spatially with the MI index, the unimodal patterns confirm the significance of moisture on fern distributions. Our results showed that mid-altitudes have the highest species richness (high MI), but high elevations have lower richness due to high solar radiation, and low elevations have lower richness due to high temperatures and low precipitation. Twenty-two of the total species are classified as nearly threatened, vulnerable or critically endangered, and varied in elevation from 800 m to 4200 m. Such relationships between the distribution and richness of fern species and climates on the Tibetan Plateau can provide data support for future predictions of the impacts of climate change scenarios on fern species, the ecological protection of representative fern species, and references for the planning and construction of nature reserves in the future. Organic matter (OM) decomposition has been shown to vary across ecosystems, suggesting that variation in local ecological conditions influences this process. A better understanding of the ecological factors driving OM decomposition rates will allow to better predict the effect of ecosystem changes on the carbon cycle. While temperature and humidity have been put forward as the main drivers of OM decomposition, the concomitant role of other ecosystem properties, such as soil physicochemical properties, and local microbial communities, remains to be investigated within large-scale ecological gradients. To address this gap, we measured the decomposition of a standardized OM source -- green tea and rooibos tea -- across 24 sites spread within a full factorial design including elevation and exposition, and across two distinct bioclimatic regions in the Swiss Alps. By analyzing OM decomposition via 19 climatic, edaphic or soil microbial activityrelated variables, which strongly varied across sites, we identified solar radiation as the primary source of variation of both green and rooibos teabags decomposition rate. This study thus highlights that while most variables, such as temperature or humidity, as well as soil microbial activity, do impact decomposition process, in combination with the measured pedo-climatic niche, solar radiation, very likely by means of indirect effects, best captures variation in OM degradation. For instance, high solar radiation might favor photodegradation, in turn speeding up the decomposition activity of the local microbial communities. Introduction: Altitude, as a comprehensive ecological factor, regulates the growth and development of plants and microbial distribution. Dendrobium nobile (D. nobile) planted in habitats at different elevations in Chishui city, also shows metabolic differences and endophytes diversity. What is the triangular relationship between altitude, endophytes, and metabolites? Methods: In this study, the diversity and species of endophytic fungi were tested by ITS sequencing and metabolic differences in plants were tested by UPLC--ESI-- MS/MS. Elevation regulated the colonization of plant endophytic fungal species and fatty acid metabolites in D. nobile. Results: The results indicate that and high altitude was better for the accumulation of fatty acid metabolites. Therefore, the high-altitude characteristic endophytic floras were screened, and the correlation with fatty acid metabolites of plants was built. The colonization of T. rubrigenum, P. Incertae sedis unclassified, Phoma. cf. nebulosa JZG 2008 and Basidiomycota unclassified showed a significantly positive correlation with fatty acid metabolites, especially 18-carbon-chain fatty acids, such as (6Z,9Z,12Z)-octadeca-6,9,12-trienoic acid, 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl- 12-oxohexadeca-2,4-dienoic acid and Octadec-9-en-12-ynoic acid. What is more fascinating is these fatty acids are the essential substrates of plant hormones. Discussion: Consequently, it was speculated that the D. nobile- colonizing endophytic fungi stimulated or upregulated the synthesis of fatty acid metabolites and even some plant hormones, thus affecting the metabolism and development of D. nobile. Introduction: Microbial mats are complex communities of benthic microorganisms that occur at the soil-water interphase in lakes' shores, streams, and ponds. In the cold, mountainous desert of Eastern Pamir (Tajikistan), where scarce water bodies are influenced by extreme environmental conditions, photosynthetic cyanobacteria form diverse mats. The mats are characterized by different morphology and thickness. Their habitats exhibit a wide range of conditions; from oligosaline to hypersaline, oligotrophic to hypertrophic, and from cold ponds to hot springs. The aim of the present study was to reveal the taxonomic composition and structure of these mats and to examine which environmental factors influence them. Methods: Fifty-one mats were collected from small water bodies around Bulunkul, Karakul, and Rangkul Lakes in 2015 and 2017. The physical and chemical properties of the water were measured in situ, while the concentration of nutrients was analyzed ex-situ. To reveal the taxonomic composition of the mats, the hypervariable V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was examined using NGS technology. Results: The results of bioinformatic analyses were compared with microscopic observations. They showed that Cyanobacteria was the dominant phylum, constituting on average 35% of bacterial ASVs, followed by Proteobacteria (28%), Bacteroidota (11%), and Firmicutes (9%). Synechococcales, Oscillatoriales, and Nostocales orders prevailed in Oxyphotobacteria, with a low contribution of Chroococcales, Gloeobacterales, and Chroococcidiopsidales. Occasionally the non-photosynthetic Vampirivibrionia (Melainabacteria) and Sericytochromatia from sister clades to Oxyphotobacteria were noted in the samples. Moreover, there was a high percentage of unidentified cyanobacterial sequences, as well as the recently described Hillbrichtia pamiria gen. et sp. nov., present in one of the samples. Salinity, followed by Na and K concentrations, correlated positively with the composition and structure of Oxyphotobacteria on different taxonomic levels and the abundance of all bacterial ASVs. Discussion: The study suggests that the investigated communities possibly host more novel and endemic species. Among the environmental factors, salinity influenced the Oxyphotobacteria communities the most. Overall, the microenvironmental factors, i.e. the conditions in each of the reservoirs seemed to have a larger impact on the diversity of microbial mats in Pamir than the "subregional" factors, related to altitude, mean annual air temperature and distance between these subregions. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the main causes of disability and death, especially in plateau areas, where the degree of injury is often more serious than in plain areas. It is likely that high altitude (HA) aggravates neuroinflammation; however, prior studies are limited. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of HA on the degree of TBI and the neuroprotective effects and underlying mechanisms of L-serine against TBI at HA (HA-TBI). In in vivo experiments, wildtype mice and mice with Nfat1 (Nfat1-/-) deficiency in the C57BL/6 background were kept in a hypobaric chamber for 3 days under simulated conditions of 4,000 m, 6,000 m and 8,000 m above sea level. After leaving the chamber, the standardized TBI model was established immediately. Mice were then intraperitoneally injected with L-serine (342 mg.kg-1) 2 h after TBI and then daily for 5 days. Behavioral tests and histological analysis were assessed at different time points post TBI induction. In vitro, we applied primary cultured microglia for hypoxia treatment (1% O2 for 24 h). The major findings include the following: (1) with increasing altitude, the neurological function of TBI mice decreased, and the damage to cerebral gray matter and white matter became more significant, (2) L-serine significantly improved the sensorimotor function of mice, reversed the increase in brain lesion volume, and promoted the renovation of brain tissue after HA-TBI, (3) L-serine significantly decreased the activation of microglia and promoted microglia polarization toward the protective M2 phenotype both in vivo and in vitro, (4) L-serine significantly suppressed the expression of NFAT1 in mice after HA-TBI and inhibited NFAT1 expression in primary microglia after hypoxia, and (5) knockout of Nfat1 inhibited the inflammatory reaction caused by excessive activation of microglia, and L-serine lost its neuroprotective effect in Nfat1 knockout mice. The present study suggests that HA aggravates brain damage after TBI and that the damage also increases with increasing altitude. As an endogenous amino acid, L-serine may be a neuroprotective agent against HA-TBI, and suppression of NFAT1 in microglia is a potential therapy for neuroinflammation in the future. The main element influencing the quality of potato starch is the environment. To investigate the effects of different altitude cultivation locations on the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of starch, two potato varieties, Jiusen No.1 B1 and Qingshu No.9 B2, were planted in three different altitude zones: A1 at low altitude (Chongzhou 450m), A2 at middle altitude (Xichang 2800 m), and A3 at high altitude (Litang 3650 m). The results showed that the average volume, number, surface area diameter, average branched polymerization degree, crystallinity, and gelatinization temperature of two potato granules in high altitude areas were significantly lower than those in middle and low altitude areas were, and the gelatinization performance of potato starch was affected according to the correlation of starch structure characteristics. Potato starch with more shortbranched chains and less long branched chains resulted in a lower gelatinization temperature in high altitude areas. The results showed that Jiusen No. 1 and Qingshu No. 9 were mainly affected by accumulated radiation and accumulated rainfall in Litang, a high altitude area, and by effective accumulated temperature in Xichang, a middle altitude area. This study quantified the influence of meteorological factors on themain starch quality of potato tubers. Introduction: Intraspecific genomic variability affects a species' adaptive potential toward climatic conditions. Variation in gene content across populations and environments may point at genomic adaptations to specific environments. The lichen symbiosis, a stable association of fungal and photobiont partners, offers an excellent system to study environmentally driven gene content variation. Many of these species have remarkable environmental tolerances, and often form populations across different climate zones. Here, we combine comparative and population genomics to assess the presence and absence of genes in high and low elevation genomes of two lichenized fungi of the genus Umbilicaria. Methods: The two species have non-overlapping ranges, but occupy similar climatic niches in North America (U. phaea) and Europe (U. pustulata): high elevation populations are located in the cold temperate zone and low elevation populations in the Mediterranean zone. We assessed gene content variation along replicated elevation gradients in each of the two species, based on a total of 2050 individuals across 26 populations. Specifically, we assessed shared orthologs across species within the same climate zone, and tracked, which genes increase or decrease in abundance within populations along elevation. Results: In total, we found 16 orthogroups with shared orthologous genes in genomes at low elevation and 13 at high elevation. Coverage analysis revealed one ortholog that is exclusive to genomes at low elevation. Conserved domain search revealed domains common to the protein kinase superfamily. We traced the discovered ortholog in populations along five replicated elevation gradients on both continents and found that the number of this protein kinase gene linearly declined in abundance with increasing elevation, and was absent in the highest populations. Discussion: We consider the parallel loss of an ortholog in two species and in two geographic settings a rare find, and a step forward in understanding the genomic underpinnings of climatic tolerances in lichenized fungi. In addition, the tracking of gene content variation provides a widely applicable framework for retrieving biogeographical determinants of gene presence/absence patterns. Our work provides insights into gene content variation of lichenized fungi in relation to climatic gradients, suggesting a new research direction with implications for understanding evolutionary trajectories of complex symbioses in relation to climatic change. Introduction: Extreme environments at high altitudes pose a significant physiological challenge to animals. We evaluated the gut microbiome and fecal metabolism in Sanhe heifers from different altitudes. Methods: Twenty Sanhe heifers (body weight: 334.82 ± 13.22 kg, 15-month-old) selected from two regions of China: the Xiertala Cattle Breeding Farm in Hulunbeier, Inner Mongolia [119°57′ E, 47°17′ N; approximately 700 m altitude, low altitude (LA)] and Zhizhao Dairy Cow Farm in Lhasa, Tibet [91°06′ E, 29°36′ N; approximately 3,650 m altitude, high altitude (HA)], were used in this study. Fecal samples were collected and differences in the gut microbiota and metabolomics of Sanhe heifers were determined using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolome analysis. Results and discussion: The results showed that altitude did not significantly affect the concentrations of fecal volatile fatty acids, including acetate, propionate, butyrate, and total volatile fatty acids (p > 0.05). However, 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that altitude significantly affected gut microbial composition. Principal coordinate analysis based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarity analysis revealed a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.001). At the family level, the relative abundances of Peptostreptococcaceae, Christensenellaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Family_XIII were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in LA heifers than in HA heifers. In addition, the relative abundances of Lachnospiraceae, Domibacillus, Bacteroidales_S24-7_group, Bacteroidales_RF16_group, Porphyromonadaceae, and Spirochaetaceae were significantly higher in HA heifers than in LA heifers (p < 0.05). Metabolomic analysis revealed the enrichment of 10 metabolic pathways, including organismal systems, metabolism, environmental information processing, genetic information processing, and disease induction. The genera Romboutsia, Paeniclostridium, and g_unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae were strongly associated with the 28 differential metabolites. This study is the first to analyze the differences in the gut microbiome and metabolome of Sanhe heifers reared at different altitudes and provides insights into the adaptation mechanism of Sanhe heifers to high-altitude areas. Background and purpose: Cerebral small-vessel disease (CSVD) is prevalent worldwide and one of the major causes of stroke and dementia. For patients with CSVD at high altitude, a special environmental status, limited information is known about their clinical phenotype and specific neuroimaging change. We investigated the clinical and neuroimaging features of patients residing at high altitude by comparing with those in the plain, trying to explore the impact of high altitude environment on CSVD. Methods: Two cohorts of CSVD patients from the Tibet Autonomous Region and Beijing were recruited retrospectively. In addition to the collection of clinical diagnoses, demographic information and traditional vascular risk factors, the presence, location, and severity of lacunes and white matter hyperintensities were assessed by manual counting and using age-related white matter changes (ARWMC) rating scale. Differences between the two groups and influence of long-term residing in the plateau were analyzed. Results: A total of 169 patients in Tibet (high altitude) and 310 patients in Beijing (low altitude) were enrolled. Fewer patients in high altitude group were found with acute cerebrovascular events and concomitant traditional vascular risk factors. The median (quartiles) ARWMC score was 10 (4, 15) in high altitude group and 6 (3, 12) in low altitude group. Less lacunes were detected in high altitude group [0 (0, 4)] than in low altitude group [2 (0, 5)]. In both groups, most lesions located in the subcortical (especially frontal) and basal ganglia regions. Logistic regressions showed that age, hypertension, family history of stroke, and plateau resident were independently associated with severe white matter hyperintensities, while plateau resident was negatively correlated with lacunes. Conclusion: Patients of CSVD residing at high altitude showedmore severeWMH but less acute cerebrovascular events and lacunes in neuroimaging, comparing to patients residing at low altitude. Methods: To investigate the diversity of AMF communities on the western slope of Helan Mountain at different altitudes and their influence factors, highthroughput sequencing was used to study the structure and diversity of soil AMF communities under different environments and their interrelationships between AMF and environmental factors. Results: The results revealed that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the physical and chemical properties of the soil along the different altitudes. A total of 1,145 OTUs were obtained by high-throughput sequencing, belonging to 1 phylum, 4 class, 6 orders, 13 families, 18 genera and 135 species, with the dominant genus being Glomus, which accounted for 75.27% of the relative abundance of the community. Soil AMF community structure was shown to be variable at the generic level according to NMDS analysis. Correlation analysis showed that soil pH, water content (WC), organic matter (OM), available K, available P and N were significantly correlated with AMF community diversity and species abundance (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). Based on redundancy analysis (RDA) and Monte Carlo test results, soil pH, WC and OM had highly significant effects (p < 0.01) on AMF community diversity and species abundance. Discussion: This study investigates the relationship between AMF community structure and diversity and soil physicochemical properties at different elevations on the western slope of Helan Mountain, which is of great significance to the study of the Helan Mountain ecosystem. Introduction: Technological advances have made high-altitude ski slopes easily accessible to skiers of all ages. However, research on the effects of hypoxia experienced during excursions to such altitudes on physiological systems, including the ocular system, in children is scarce. Retinal vessels are embryologically of the same origin as vessels in the brain, and have similar anatomical and physiological characteristics. Thus, any hypoxia-related changes in the morphology of the former may reflect the status of the latter. Objective: To compare the effect of one-day hypoxic exposure, equivalent to the elevation of high-altitude ski resorts in North America and Europe (~3,000 m), on retinal vessel diameter between adults and children. Methods: 11 adults (age: 40.1 ± 4.1 years) and 8 children (age: 9.3 ± 1.3 years) took part in the study. They spent 3 days at the Olympic Sports Centre Planica (Slovenia; altitude: 940 m). During days 1 and 2 they were exposed to normoxia (Fi O2 = 0.209), and day 3 to normobaric hypoxia (Fi O2 = 0.162 ± 0.03). Digital highresolution retinal fundus photographs were obtained in normoxia (Day 2) and hypoxia (Day 3). Central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE) and venular equivalents (CRVE) were determined using an Automated Retinal Image Analyser. Results: Central retinal arteriolar and venular equivalents increased with hypoxia in children (central retinal arteriolar equivalent: 105.32 ± 7.72 µm, hypoxia: 110.13 ± 7.16 µm, central retinal venular equivalent: normoxia: 123.39 ± 8.34 µm, hypoxia: 130.11 ± 8.54 µm) and adults (central retinal arteriolar equivalent: normoxia: 105.35 ± 10.67 µm, hypoxia: 110.77 ± 8.36 µm; central retinal venular equivalent: normoxia: 126.89 ± 7.24 µm, hypoxia: 132.03 ± 9.72 µm), with no main effect of group or group*condition interaction. A main effect of condition on central retinal arteriolar and venular equivalents was observed (central retinal arteriolar equivalent: normoxia: 105.34 ± 9.30 µm, hypoxia: 110.50 ± 7.67 µm, p < 0.001; central retinal venular equivalent: normoxia: 125.41 ± 7.70 µm, hypoxia: 131.22 ± 9.05 µm, p < 0.001). Conclusion: A 20-hour hypoxic exposure significantly increased central retinal arteriolar and venular equivalents in adults and children. These hypoxia-induced increases were not significantly different between the age groups, confirming that vasomotor sensitivity of the retinal vessels to acute hypoxia is comparable between adults and prepubertal children.
